This year’s inductees in the contemporary songwriters category are Al Anderson and Liz Rose, while Dan Penn and Victoria Shaw are feted in the veteran songwriters category, and Bellamy is honored in the veteran songwriter-artist category.
During a press conference held the Columbia A Studio in Nashville, Nashville Songwriters Board of Directors chair Rich Hallworth opened the announcement event, while Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame executive director Mark Ford announced this year’s inductees. Ford also revealed that singer-songwriter Brad Paisley is the winner of this year’s contemporary artist/songwriter category, but will be inducted as part of next year’s class, due to a scheduling conflict.

“This is surreal, absolutely surreal,” Shaw said in reaction to the news. “I love this business. I love the art of songwriting. I’m still stunned and deeply grateful.”
Penn took the stage and said, “It’s a privilege to be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame alongside so many of my friends.” He added, “I’ve had the blessing of writing with so many talented people here over the years…I’m grateful to be here and proud to be included in such fine company.”
Anderson could not be there in person, but accepted via video. “To be accepted into this group is such a privilege,” Anderson said.
Rose was not in attendance, but said via video, “Wow, I’m really blown away. Thank you so much to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. This is really sinking in right now and I’m so sad that I’m not there. I’m out of town writing songs. I’m really excited to be in this amazing group of the best songwriters in the world.”
Bellamy, known for his songwriting craft and for his work with his brother Howard as part of The Bellamy Brothers, took the stage, saying, “I’m still in shock. Thank you so much. I have to thank Howard because he was probably the best sounding board for a songwriter. He’ll tell you if he doesn’t like something. He’s always been critical of my work and it’s made it better.” Bellamy wrote many of the songs he recorded with his brother, including their signature 1979 track “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me).”
Among Anderson’s writer credits are Tim McGraw’s “The Cowboy in Me,” Carlene Carter’s “Every Little Thing,” Trisha Yearwood’s “Powerful Thing” and “Trip Around the Sun,” recorded by Jimmy Buffett & Martina McBride. Shaw’s credits include “The River,” recorded by Garth Brooks, the Ricky Martin/Christina Aguilera collab “Nobody Wants to Be Lonely,” and John Michael Montgomery’s “I Love The Way You Love Me.” Rose earned her first hit in 2004 with Gary Allan’s “Songs About Rain” and then worked with then-newcomer Taylor Swift to craft songs including “Tim McGraw,” “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “White Horse,” with Rose’s credits also including Carrie Underwood’s “Cry Pretty” and Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush.” Penn’s credits include “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” and “The Dark End of the Street,” among others.
Since its founding in 1970, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame has honored many of Music City’s top-shelf songcrafters, including Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Loretta Lynn, Don and Phil Everly and plenty more.
The new group of inductees will be honored during the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala, slated for Nov. 6 at Nashville’s Music City Center, with additional honorees to be announced.
Katy Perry will receive MTV’s Video Vanguard Award and perform a career-spanning medley live at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8 p.m. ET/PT from New York’s UBS Arena.
Perry received the VMA’s other top honor, video of the year, in 2011 for “Firework.” She will be the 10th artist to receive both video of the year and the Vanguard award, following Madonna, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M., Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Rihanna, P!nk and Missy Elliott.
Perry, who hosted the VMAs in 2017, will be the first person to, over the course of a career, host and receive both of the show’s marquee awards — making her a VMAs MVP.
Trending on Billboard
Perry and the VMAs are almost exactly the same age: Perry was born six weeks after the inaugural VMAs, co-hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd, aired on Sept. 14, 1984.
Perry is the seventh consecutive recipient of the Vanguard Award who is a woman, following Rihanna (2016), P!nk (2017), Jennifer Lopez (2018), Elliott (2019), Nicki Minaj (2022) and Shakira (2023). (There was no recipient in 2020 and 2021, the years most impacted by the pandemic.)
Perry made her VMAs performance debut in 2009 with a rendition of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” on which she was joined by Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. She closed out the 2013 VMAs with a performance of her Billboard Hot 100-topping smash “Roar” surrounded by fans near the Brooklyn Bridge. In 2017, she pulled double-duty as both host and performer, delivering a grand-finale performance of “Swish Swish” with Minaj that included larger-than-life props and Perry flying over the crowd to land atop a giant basketball hoop.
This is Perry’s sixth VMA Moonperson award. She won three trophies in 2011: video of the year for “Firework” and best collaboration and best special effects, both for “E.T.” (featuring Ye, then known as Kanye West). (The VMAs give artists credit for technical awards their videos win even if they weren’t personally credited in those capacities.) She won another VMA in 2012, best art direction for “Wide Awake,” and another in 2014, best female video for “Dark Horse” (featuring Juicy J).
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming & events, Paramount and chief content officer, music, Paramount+, said in a statement. “With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages. Katy’s prowess will be on full display live on the VMAs with a can’t-miss, career-encompassing performance celebrating her biggest moments and chart-topping hits.”
MTV’s press release announcing Perry as the recipient referred to the award as the Video Vanguard Award twice (including once in the headline) and as the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award once. The award was named in Jackson’s honor in 1991, but the network has seemed to downplay the association somewhat since the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland raised disturbing allegations about the star’s behavior.
Perry has amassed nine No. 1 hits on the Hot 100 and three No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200. Perry unveiled her new single, “Lifetimes,” on Aug. 8. The song is from her sixth major-label studio album, 143, which will be released on Sept. 20 via Capitol Records.
MTV made its announcement on Thursday (Aug. 14), two days after Billboard posted this piece in which we surveyed the field of likely Video Vanguard candidates. We pegged Perry as the likeliest recipient, followed (in descending order of likelihood) by Eminem, Usher, Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Post Malone and Drake.
Here’s what we said about Perry, again before we knew who the choice would be. “It almost makes too much sense: Katy Perry will be releasing a new album in September that appears geared up to be a return to the mega-pop that she ruled with at the turn of the 2010s — when she was one of the most unavoidable artists in the MTV galaxy, with four or five eye-popping music videos per album (including one, Teenage Dream‘s ‘Firework,’ that took home video of the year in 2011). There could be no better stage for her to remind pop fans why they’re still rooting for her comeback than the VMAs, with a performance spanning from breakthrough hit ‘I Kissed a Girl’ to this year’s ‘Woman’s World’ return.”

Missy Higgins will be elevated into the ARIA Hall Of Fame later this year, one of the greatest honors in the Australian record industry.
The singer and songwriter will be inducted during the 2024 ARIA Awards, set to be presented Nov. 20 at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.
Higgins is no stranger to ARIAs glory. Since releasing her debut 2004 LP The Sound of White, which spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA Chart and is now 12-times platinum certified, the Aussie artist has collected nine ARIA Awards.
“Missy has gone on to become one of the highest selling singer-songwriters of our era, creating some of Australia’s most loved and recognized songs,” reads a statement Thursday, Aug. 15, announcing her induction.

Her 2007 followup, On A Clear Night, also peaked at No. 1, as did 2012’s The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle. Oz (from 2014) and Solastalgia (2018) both cracked the top three of the national albums tally.
“I feel very honored and grateful,” she comments in a statement. “So many artists I love and admire are in the ARIA Hall Of Fame so it feels a bit surreal to be joining them. This year has already been really special, now this is going to make it even more memorable.”

To celebrate her salute, Higgins will release her first full length release in six years, The Second Act (via EMI Australia) on Sept. 6, following her biggest Australian tour in nearly 20 years. Higgins has previewed new songs from it on her The Second Act Tour, which has criss-crossed the country for five months, playing 40 sold-out shows. Most of those 80,000 tickets were “snapped up within minutes,” according to Frontier Touring. Missy adds a final Victorian encore show, presented by ALWAYS LIVE and Frontier Touring, at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne on Dec. 6.
“Australia has seen Missy Higgins’ music career go from strength to strength, including nine ARIA Awards, several No. 1 albums, and multiple sell-out national tours,” comments ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd.
The ARIA Hall of Fame “is all about celebrating legendary music talent who leave a unique mark, inspiring not only the industry but Australia and the world. Missy is the absolute epitome of this. We couldn’t be happier to be welcoming one of Australia’s most loved and admired artists, Missy Higgins, into the ARIA Hall of Fame.”
With her induction, Higgins joins a who’s who of great Australian acts, including AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Nick Cave, Kylie Minogue, Archie Roach, Dame Joan Sutherland, Johnny O’Keefe, Slim Dusty, Men at Work, Midnight Oil and others.
More announcements for the 2024 ARIA Awards in partnership with YouTube are “coming very soon,” reps say.
Zach Bryan and Beyoncé are the leading nominees for the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, with 19 and 17 nods, respectively. They are followed in the nominations tally by Kacey Musgraves (15), Shaboozey (12), Kane Brown and Morgan Wallen (11 each) and then Luke Combs (10).
Thus, three of the top six nominees are Black, something that would have seemed unlikely at a country music awards show not too many years ago.
Trending on Billboard
Wallen was the leading nominee for last year’s inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, with 11 nods, though he received just three awards. Jelly Roll was last year’s top winner, with four awards.
The show has added six new categories this year, all of them song categories: female song, male song, group/duo song, cover song, new artist song and storyteller song.
Nine of this year’s 18 categories are devoted to songs. Six are artist awards and one each are for albums, music videos and concert tours.
Hosted by Shania Twain, the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards will air live Thursday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT across NBC and Peacock from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Twain is the only woman in the running for The Concert Tour of 2024. She is nominated for Shania Twain: Come on Over – The Las Vegas Residency – All the Hits!
Three of the eight artists nominated for the top award, The People’s Artist of 2024, are women: Beyoncé, Musgraves and Lainey Wilson. This is up from two women in the finals in this category last year. The five men nominated in the category this year are Brown, Combs, Wallen and Bryan (who were also nominated in this category last year) plus Jelly Roll (who is nominated in this category for the first time).
Bryan has two of the eight nominees for The Song of 2024: “I Remember Everything” (feat. Musgraves) and “Pink Skies.” He also has two of the eight nominees for The Collaboration Song of 2024: “I Remember Everything” (feat. Musgraves) and “Hey Driver” (feat. The War and Treaty).
Beyoncé has two of the eight nominees for The Female Song of 2024: “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ’Em.” She also has two of the eight nominees for The Cover Song of 2024: her updates of The Beatles’ “Blackbiird” and Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
Post Malone has two of the eight nominees for The Music Video of 2024: “I Had Some Help” (feat. Wallen) and “Pour Me a Drink” (feat. Blake Shelton). Musgraves has two of the eight nominees for The Storyteller Song of 2024: “Deeper Well” and “Too Good to Be True.”
With 12 nominations, Shaboozey is the likely front-runner to win The New Artist of 2024 (which Jelly Roll won last year). He faces Chase Matthew, Chayce Beckham, Dasha, Koe Wetzel, Nate Smith, Tucker Wetmore and Warren Zeiders.
The show bills itself as “an award show for the people and by the people.” Winners are chosen entirely by the fans. Voting begins now and runs through Friday, Aug. 23, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Fans can vote online at VotePCCA.com. Votes cast on Turbo Tuesday, Aug. 20, from midnight to 11:59 p.m. ET, will count twice, equaling a maximum of two votes per day, per category. (Complete rules can be found here.)
A limited number of show tickets and VIP packages are available now at Opry.com.
The People’s Choice Country Awards are produced by Den of Thieves. Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski will executive produce, along with RAC Clark as executive producer and showrunner.
A red carpet pre-show, Live From E!: People’s Choice Country Awards, will kick off the night at 6 p.m. ET/PT on E! The pre-show is produced by Den of Thieves with executive producers Ignjatovic, Prager and Bialkowski.

LONDON — Jorja Smith, CASISDEAD and Barry Can’t Swim are among the leading nominees for the 2024 Association of Independent Music (AIM) Awards, which recognize the achievements of the artists, labels, entrepreneurs and companies that make up the U.K.’s indie sector.
The 14th edition of the annual awards show is set for Oct. 17 at London’s Roundhouse venue. Nominees also include D-Block Europe, Kim Gordon, Actress, rapper Skrapz, Mount Kimbie, Anohni and the Johnsons and jazz nine-piece Nubiyan Twist, who are all in the running for the best independent album prize alongside Smith and electronic music producer Barry Can’t Swim, real name Joshua Mainnie.
Trending on Billboard
R&B singer Jorja Smith, a 2019 Grammy nominee for best new artist, is also listed in the best independent track category for her hit “Little Things,” which spent 22 weeks on the Official U.K. Singles chart, peaking at No. 11.
2023 Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective are on the best track shortlist, along with Fontaines D.C., KNEECAP, Hudson Mohawke and Nikki Nair, Sampha, NikNak, Matthew Halsall, Amy Gadiaga and CASISDEAD — who was crowned best hip-hop/grime/rap act at the BRIT Awards on March 2.
Other categories announced by AIM, which represents more than 1,000 U.K. independent labels, artists and music companies, include best EP/mixtape, best remix and best video.
The five contenders for the independent breakthrough award number London rapper CASISDEAD, Barry Can’t Swim, Bar Italia, Saint Harison and Wunderhorse, who all receive free access to studio time at London’s Metropolis Studios as part of their nomination.
AIM’s One to Watch category, which has previously been collected by Nia Archives and Arlo Parks, shines a light on spoken word artist Antony Szmierek, drum and bass MC OneDa, DJ Kitty Amor and artist/producers Lynks and Miso Extra.
Nominees and winners are picked by the AIM board and a panel of expert judges with the exception of the best live performer award, which is decided by a public vote.
In terms of most nominated indie labels, London-based Ninja Tune leads the pack with its artists receiving four nods across the categories announced so far (Actress, Barry Can’t Swim, Nabihah Iqbal and George Riley). XL Recordings, Heavenly Recordings and artist services company EGA Distro each have three acts up for prizes.
Nominations for the remaining award categories, including best boutique label and independent champion, as well as live performers at this year’s ceremony will be announced in the coming months, said AIM. Sponsors and media partners for October’s awards include Spotify, Vevo, Meta, Notion, Amazon Music and the BBC.
Gee Davy, interim AIM CEO, said that this year’s nominees “spans the regions and nations, genres and communities of the U.K.’s independent music scene, recognizing success, talent and artistry.”
Ruth Barlow, the not-for-profit organization’s chair, said in a statement that the 2024 awards shortlist provides “a great glimpse into the length and breadth of the U.K.’s independent sector and highlight a handful of the innovators, culture makers and commercial successes AIM’s outstanding community has to offer.”
According to figures released earlier this year from U.K. labels trade body BPI, independently released songs and albums accounted for almost one-third of all music consumption in the U.K. in 2023 with the equivalent of more than 53 million independently released albums streamed or purchased across digital and physical formats. The U.K. is the world’s third-biggest recorded music market in IFPI’s annual rankings behind the U.S. and Japan.

MTV has bumped the date of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards from Tuesday Sept. 10 to Wednesday Sept. 11 to avoid conflicting with the planned U.S. Presidential debate between vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump.

The conflict with the debate would have posed an image problem for MTV, which has made boosting voter turnout and civic engagement a part of its brand since the 1992 election, in which Bill Clinton unseated George H.W. Bush. Also, the intense interest in the first (and conceivably only) Trump/Harris debate threatened to completely overwhelm the VMAs.

In a press release announcing the change, MTV said “Our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night.”
Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro are the first artists slated to perform at the awards. This will be Cabello’s third main-stage performance on the VMAs, but the first for these other artists. Carpenter performed a mash-up of “Feather” and “Nonsense” on last year’s pre-show. (The fact that Carpenter was booked on the pre-show, rather than the main show, just one year ago is a dramatic sign of how fast her rise has been this year.)
All five of the scheduled performers are 2024 VMA nominees. Carpenter is up for six awards, GloRilla for three, Roan and Alejandro for two and Cabello for one.
The show will air live from UBS Arena in New York on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This will mark the first time the show has been held on 9/11 since the terrorist attack in 2001 made that date infamous. In observance of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, MTV will again support the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and Tuesday’s Children, which serves the families of 9/11.
The 2024 show will be held just three days shy of the 40th anniversary of the inaugural VMAs at Radio City Music Hall, where Madonna stole the show.
Cabello is set to perform a song from her fourth studio album, C,XOXO, which has so far reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200. Cabello’s previous main-stage performances were in 2019, alongside then-beau Shawn Mendes on “Señorita” and in 2021 on “Don’t Go Yet.” (As part of Fifth Harmony, she performed “Boss” on the VMAs pre-show in 2014.) Alejandro will perform a song from his forthcoming fifth studio album.
Latin and Latin pop crossover music has been an important part of the performance mix on VMA broadcasts since 2018. Last year, four Latin artists performed on the show – Shakira (as part of her Video Vanguard award presentation), Karol G, Peso Pluma and Anitta (the latter both solo and in tandem with K-pop stars TOMORROW X TOGETHER).
Prior to that, in 2022, J Balvin (with Ryan Castro), Anitta and Bad Bunny performed. In 2021, Ozuna, Cabello and Tainy (in tandem with Mendes) represented Latin music. In 2020, Maluma, CNCO and Nicky Jam (in tandem with Black Eyed Peas and Tyga) did the honors. In 2019, CNCO (in the pre-show), Cabello (with Mendes), Rosalía and Ozuna (in a joint performance) and J Balvin and Bad Bunny (also in a joint performance) all performed. In 2018, Jennifer Lopez (receiving a Video Vanguard award) and Maluma performed.
Taylor Swift leads the nominations for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, with 10 nods. Her “Fortnight” collaborator Post Malone is second, with nine nods – eight in tandem with Swift plus one for his hit “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen. They are followed by Ariana Grande, Eminem and Carpenter (six nods each); Megan Thee Stallion and SZA (five each), and LISA, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims (four each).
Other artists with multiple nominations are Anitta, Benson Boone, Bleachers, GloRilla, Dua Lipa and Tyla, with three each; and Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Roan, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Drake, Jelly Roll, Jessie Murph, Jung Kook, Latto, Alejandro, Sexyy Red, Tate McRae, Usher and Victoria Monét, with two each.
Fans can vote for their favorites across 15 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, Aug. 30. Voting for best new artist will remain active into the show on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Nominations in social categories will be announced at a later date.

As Disney fans flocked to the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on Sunday evening (Aug. 11) for the Disney Legends Ceremony, one thing was clear: this was not the average award show. (Perhaps the biggest spoiler was the abundance of Mickey Mouse ears.) The star-studded evening served as the finale to D23, a three-day event […]
