The duo performed Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 classic “Iris,” trading lyrics as they sang the beloved track. Lovato shared the band’s Instagram post thanking them for the performance to their Story, writing, “This was a dream come true!!!’

Earlier this month, the “29” singer shared that they needed to reschedule their Rosemont, Ill., tour date on Oct. 5 after losing their voice. “Rosemont, today I woke up and had absolutely no voice. I’m so so sorry but it breaks my heart to tell you I have to reschedule the show,” Lovato wrote from the Holy Fvck tour’s official Instagram account.

In general, the Holy Fvck tour has been rough on Lovato. In September, they fell ill and told fans that their current tour will likely be their last. “I’m so f—ing sick I can’t get out of bed,” Lovato wrote on a series of photos of a window. “I can’t do this anymore. This next tour will be my last. I love and thank you guys.”

Holy Fvck, Lovato’s eighth studio album, features collaborations with Royal & the Serpent, YUNGBLUD and Dead Sara, as well as writing and production credits from Warren “Oak” Felder, Michael Pollack and Lovato. Like the album’s singles, Holy Fvck is a departure from the pop gloss of her Tell Me You Love Me days.

The Contenders: Will Lil Baby, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Backstreet Boys Top the Billboard 200 Albums Chart? 

Welcome to The Contenders, a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week: Lil Baby aims for his second straight No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, while Red Hot Chili Peppers try to go two for two in 2022, and Backstreet Boys try to get ahead of the game with their first-ever Christmas set.  

Lil Baby, It’s Only Me (Quality Control/Motown) 

When his sophomore set My Turn debuted at No. 1 in March 2020 and reigned for five nonconsecutive weeks, it cemented Lil Baby as one of the pre-eminent rappers of the young decade. The ATL star hopes to continue rising with It’s Only Me, which has been preceded by a steady stream of singles — most don’t appear on the set, but the biggest one does: Billboard Hot 100 No. 14 hit “In a Minute.”  

As with My Turn, which debuted with 261.6 million on-demand streams for its collected songs — at the time of its release, the highest total for any album that year — It’s Only Me is expected to dominate streaming services. The set includes a whopping 23 tracks, and high-profile guest appearances from Future, Young Thug, Pooh Shiesty and more. (Even without a new album last year, Lil Baby still finished at No. 8 on Billboard’s Year-End Streaming Songs Artists chart.)  

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Return of the Dream Canteen (Warner) 

The recent reunion of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers with longtime guitarist John Frusciante led to a productivity overflow, in the form of two new albums. The first, April’s Unlimited Love, debuted atop the Billboard 200 with 97,500 equivalent album units, and spawned the year’s longest-running No. 1 on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with “Black Summer.”  

Last Friday, RHCP returned with their second new album of 2022, Return of the Dream Canteen, another 75 minutes of melodic punk-funk. As with Unlimited Love, which sold a then-2022-high 38,500 copies on vinyl, Dream Canteen should see robust sales numbers powered by a dozen different-colored LP options, as well as four CDs (and a box set that includes a shirt). The set also boasts a Rock & Alternative Airplay No. 1 of its own in “Tippa My Tongue,” which has crowned the chart for three weeks and counting.  

The 1975, Being Funny in a Foreign Language (Dirty Hit)  

The Manchester alt-pop quartet has been one of the most consistently successful U.K. bands of the past decade on both sides of the pond. The group has topped the Official Charts in their home country with each of their first four albums, and made the Billboard 200’s top five with each of their last three – including the 2016 No. 1 I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful, Yet So Unaware of It. This month, they look to continue both streaks with the release of fifth studio set Being Funny in a Foreign Language, featuring co-production by pop-rock whisperer Jack Antonoff.  

The group is off to a good start in the U.K., and three songs released in advance from the set have already reached the top 30 of Billboard’s Rock Songs chart in “Happiness,” “I’m in Love With You” and “All I Need to Hear.” Two advantages the band had with their past set won’t help them this time, though: 2020’s No. 4-peaking Notes on a Conditional Form came with a ticket bundle, which are no longer counted towards Billboard 200 consumption, and it also goosed its streaming totals with a 22-song track list, twice as many as the 11 featured on Being Funny.   

IN THE MIX 

Bailey Zimmerman, Leave the Light On (Warner Music Nashville): Few country breakout stories this year have excited as much as Bailey Zimmerman, who largely bypassed the Nashville machine to score three Hot 100 top 40 hits (“Fall in Love,” “Rock and a Hard Place” and “Where It Ends”) before he ever had a top 10 Country Airplay hit. All three of those TikTok-boosted streaming smashes are featured on Leave the Light On, Zimmerman’s nine-track debut EP.  

Noah Kahan, Stick Season (Mercury/Republic): The indie-pop singer-songwriter has steadily built a cult fandom since signing to Republic a half-decade ago, which should culminate in his first Billboard 200-charting effort with this month’s folkier and more personal Stick Season. Credit the set’s title track, a breakout success on streaming and radio, and a career-best No. 11 hit for Kahan on the Rock Songs chart this August.  

Backstreet Boys, A Very Backstreet Christmas (K-BAHN): The Boys-turned-men enter the seasonal music game this month with A Very Backstreet Christmas, featuring BSB covers of 10 holiday standards and a trio of group originals. Holiday music is often a reliable seller for catalog pop favorites like Backstreet, and the quintet has a streak to protect here: Each of their 10 Billboard 200-charting albums to date has made the top 10.

Makin’ Tracks: ‘Whiskey’ Fuels Justin Moore’s New Duet With Priscilla Block 

Privacy may be one of the most valuable commodities of life in 2022. 

With internet tracking, the proliferation of public cameras and the frequent ping of text-message spam, keeping personal space personal is much more difficult than it was when the biggest issue was a neighborhood snoop.

Finding time alone — specifically adult time alone — is at the heart of “You, Me, and Whiskey,” a new Justin Moore duet with Priscilla Block. It’s also a real-world issue for Moore, who shares a house in Arkansas with his wife of 15 years and their four kids.

“One night, [it’s] softball practice for one of them, the other night is basketball lessons for this one and the next night is church,” he says. “It’s difficult to make time for Kate and I — for just us — so you have to make a concerted effort to do that. So I really related to the song.”

Landing a cut with Moore was the goal when Brock Berryhill (“Homesick,” “What Happens in a Small Town”) hosted a 9 a.m. writing session with Cole Taylor (“Home Alone Tonight,” “Nothing To Do Town”) and Jessi Alexander (“Never Say Never,” “I Drive Your Truck”) on Music Row on Jan. 10. Specifically, they intended to write a potential duet for Moore and an unidentified female.

“I love writing duets and almost can’t get tired of them,” enthuses Alexander. “In a duet, you kind of get more dimension. And I love layering. You can alternate melodies and shift around and [have the singers] accompany each other.”

Taylor brought the title “You, Me, and Whiskey” into the room, and all three thought it lent itself to a song about a casual hookup. But they wanted an angle that was authentic to Moore’s home life and focused on a long-term couple.

“He’s happily married,” Taylor says. “When you’re writing with certain artists in mind, you have to keep their story in your head.”

They wrote the anthemic chorus first, beginning the stanza with the hook and filling the next six lines with rising passion and alcohol, the “black-label buzz” aiding the couple’s private pursuit of “things that stay in the dark.” That led to the setup line, celebrating the romance as both sweet and strong, before they repeated the hook once more.

That setup line “was the hardest one for us to find,” recalls Taylor. “We knew we had something special with the melody and the title and the duet part. And the most important part of the song is how you set up the hook. None of it matters if you don’t have a good hook. We searched and searched and searched for that, and then I want to say Jessi maybe said, ‘Nothin’ as sweet, nothin’ as strong.’ We’re all, ‘Yeah, that’s it.’”

They made the chorus ultra-flexible. If Moore — or some other artist — wanted to cut it solo, they wouldn’t have to change a single word. But it was also perfect for two singers to trade lines or sing the entire chorus in harmony.

“I’m a big harmony guy, so I love everything harmonized,” Berryhill says. “I’d harmonize drums.”

They used the same four-chord progression for the verses as the chorus, applying a different melodic approach to provide variance. The progression is dark and mostly unresolved, creating a near-constant tension. The chorus’ big, bright melody hides it a bit, though the verses, using a lower melody and more cautious phrasing, make that subliminal need for resolution clearer. That’s quite appropriate for a song about interpersonal tension and release.

In the second verse, they addressed the release a little more with a cheeky line about “talkin’ dirty” at 10:30,” knowing that it might cause an issue for some programmers. “Obviously, it’s really risky,” allows Taylor. “If it needs changing, we can change it. If not, we just got ‘talkin’ dirty’ on country radio.”

Alexander believes allowing the characters to behave in a public song the way they would in private makes it more likely to connect. “There’s going to be people in the carpool lane, people that are also married, that hopefully will go, ‘I remember those kids,’ ” she says. “That’s exciting because I don’t know that they’re spoken to a lot.”

“You, Me, and Whiskey” didn’t get completed during that Monday’s two-hour appointment, but they reassembled on Friday to finish it. Taylor and Alexander laid down the vocal parts for the demo that day, and Berryhill produced it with scratchy programmed drums and acoustic guitar, offset by a shimmering banjo.

“Being a rock dude, I normally take things to 10,” says Berryhill. “But this one, we kind of kept it like 60%, 70%. The demo doesn’t have all the big drums.”

An hour after Taylor turned it in to his publisher at Creative Nation, owner/producer Jeremy Stover (Travis Denning, Jack Ingram) forwarded “Whiskey” to Moore, who identified Block as his first choice for a duet partner. They both appeared at a WUSY Chattanooga, Tenn., guitar pull on March 29, and Moore was impressed by her voice and her poise while performing alongside artists who were all more established.

“I thought Priscilla stole the show that night with her interaction with the crowd,” he says. “She sang her tail off. The songs were really, really good. I was just highly impressed.”

He told her that night he would be happy to help her any way he could. Getting her to sing on “Whiskey” would fulfill that offer. She was interested, but of course wanted to hear it before she agreed. It was an easy “yes.”

“It feels like me,” says Block. “I tend to drink quite a bit of whiskey, so that one was like, ‘All right, we’re on brand here.’ ”

Stover and his co-producer, Big Machine Label Group president/CEO Scott Borchetta, kept some of Berryhill’s drum programming from the demo but otherwise rerecorded “Whiskey” with a full band, providing a tougher sound while cutting six tracks at The Castle in Franklin, Tenn.

“It’s out in the country, and there’s not a lot of distractions, so everybody’s hyper-focused just on the music,” Stover says. “They’re not running somewhere to make a bank deposit or run an errand. Everybody’s just there for the day.”

Stover visited Arkansas to capture Moore’s lead vocal at his home, and he worked with Block at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios to get her part, intentionally highlighting her unique tone and enunciations, even when the two singers are locked in harmony. “Sometimes you can line up the vocal so tight that it just sounds like a background singer,” says Stover. “We left those vocals where you really hear two distinctive voices, but at the same time, you don’t lose the melody.”

He encouraged Block to adjust the part to accentuate her persona, and she found that “Whiskey” went down rather easily. “Thank you, Jesus, they weren’t sending me any Christina Aguilera/Carrie Underwood [song],” Block deadpans. “There’s just no way that my voice would be able to do amazing things like that.”

Valory released “You, Me, and Whiskey” to country radio via PlayMPE on Oct. 10 with an official add date of Oct. 24. Their two voices fit together publicly the way the song’s characters mesh in private. In the process, the singers meet in the middle, using a production that walks the line between Moore’s usual classic country instrumentation and Block’s more progressive sound.

“It reminds me a little bit of ‘Somebody Else Will,’ ” he says. “So we’re being pushed a little bit out of my comfort zone. But sometimes that’s good. We didn’t get outside of the box, but we got a little closer to the edge of it.”

Megan Thee Stallion & Pardison Fontaine Celebrate Two-Year Anniversary: ‘I Love Lovin You’

Megan Thee Stallion and Pardison Fontaine have celebrated their two-year anniversary, and the pair commemorated the moment with some heartfelt posts on Instagram.

On Tuesday (October 18), Pardi posted a carousel of candid photos with him and the Houston Hottie, writing in the caption: “TWO YEARS AROUND THE SUN .. SEEM LIKE WE BEEN ON OUR OWN PLANET.. I love lovin you ..GOT 4 EVER 2 GO.”

Meg posted her own cute collection of photos, merely echoing Pardi’s sentiments.

“Yr 2 with U,” she wrote.

Pardi and Meg started dating in late 2020, and while their time together has been fairly easygoing, breakup rumors began to circulate in January when the “WAP” rapper removed photos of her and Pardi from her Instagram page.

The rumor mill had already started to turn in December when Megan didn’t wish Pardi a happy birthday online. Various outlets also claimed Megan was allegedly a “mean drunk” and put hands on Pardi, but the latter quelled these rumors in a frustrated Instagram Story.

“Stop this cap nobody puttin hands on nobody …(At least not in that way ),” he wrote. “Been seein the break up rumors and was lettin y’all imaginations run ..but y’all gettin too crazy ….ain’t give n-ggas a story so they made one … we really been on it double time.”

Prior to that, fans had previously shown concern when a viral clip showed Pardi allegedly banging on Megan’s bathroom door and demanding her to come out. Megan hopped on IG Live following the incident to defend her partner.

“People don’t know what the hell they talking about,” she said. “I didn’t like what they was trying to say about Pardi, ’cause he is so calm and so sweet … That’s my boo … He is so perfect and he would never do anything to hurt me.”

In other Meg news, the Houston rapper served as both the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live last weekend and gave an emotional performance of “Anxiety,” which is off her latest Traumazine project. The album bowed at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 66,000 total album-equivalent units sold in its first week, marking her fifth consecutive Top 10 placement on the albums chart.

Last month, Megan Thee Stallion also made her twerking MCU debut in the third episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and rumors began to spread earlier in October that Meg may have secured a spot in Stranger Things’ fifth and final season.

Talib Kweli Calls Out Kanye West For Taking ‘Advantage’ Of N.O.R.E.

Talib Kweli has called out Kanye West for his recent Drink Champs interview and claimed he took advantage of N.O.R.E. for his own “political gain.”

The Brooklyn native posted a clip of a recent interview Ye did with the Daily Mail, where he addressed the backlash N.O.R.E. has faced for how he moderated the controversial episode.

Kanye called for people to back off the Drink Champs co-host and praised him for giving him a platform to speak freely, which he said “no one does.”

However, Kweli wasn’t buying Ye’s explanation and let it be known on Instagram. According to the Black Star MC, Drink Champs isn’t a political platform and Ye knew that, even though he still chose to spew his offensive rhetoric on the podcast.

“@kanyewest bro you not a good friend to @therealnoreaga stop the [cap],” Kweli wrote in his caption. “You called NORE because he the only one who would let you come on after The Shop shelved you because you was screaming White Lives Matter (a nazi phrase) at everyone during that taping.

“You know for a fact @drinkchamps is not a political show but you went their to regurgitate lies about Black people from @realcandaceowens who is a political talking head. You literally wore a 2024 hat, essentially announcing your political aspirations.”

Kweli continued: “You took advantage of NORE, someone who was giving you the benefit of the doubt, for your own political gain. And now you have jeopardized his show and made the families of the victims of racist police brutality want to sue you.”

Talib Kweli continued to drag Kanye, claiming everything he was doing had nothing to do with using free speech to help the Black community. Kweli believes Ye is promoting an “anti-Black” agenda and cited his recent purchase of the conservative social media platform Parler.

“And I don’t wanna hear shit about free speech since you bought Parler,” Kweli added. “Freedom of speech ain’t freedom from consequences. You use your free speech to support anti Black rhetoric and people. I use mine to call that out. NORE was right to apologize. Because that’s what decent people do when they fuck up. Be decent Ye.”

Elsewhere in his Daily Mail interview, Kanye West slammed the media for supposedly disrespecting him by referring to him as a simply “rapper,” since he claims he’s worth “$11 billion” and is “richest Black man of all time.”

Kanye has come under heavy fire in recent weeks for various controversial antics, such as wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt and making anti-Semitic comments.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I can sit there and say, ‘That’s only Kanye West, it’s only what he said.’ But I have a responsibility when I have an audience … When I watched myself, I was embarrassed. I was like, ‘Wait a minute? You just let him say that?!’ I’m irresponsible for letting it go.”

Britney Spears Gets Lance Bass‘ Stamp of Approval on ’Hold Me Closer’

Britney Spears‘ recent collaboration with Elton John is getting love from a fellow pop star. On Tuesday (Oct. 18), Spears posted a fun video of Lance Bass dancing along to her latest hit ,”Hold Me Closer.”

In the clip, the former *NSYNC member grooves along to the duet, flitting along the edge of his hot tub over the caption, “POV: You’re gay and Britney just released a bop with Elton John.” For her part, Spears certainly appreciated the shout-out, tweeting, “Omg Lance !!!” along with a trio of rainbow emojis.

Upon its release at the end of August, “Hold Me Closer” debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, earning the pop icon her highest entry on the chart since 2012’s “Scream and Shout” with Will.i.am. In the past, Bass has consistently spoken out in support of his old pal, even predicting she’ll eventually return to the stage even as she’s insisted repeatedly on social media that she won’t be performing any time soon.

Minutes after posting Bass’ video, the “…Baby One More Time” singer followed it up with a NSFW snap of her own. “I have a premiere for a movie this week ‘THE LEGISLATIVE ACT OF MY P—Y’ !!!!” she captioned a photo of herself lying naked across what appears to be a hotel room bed with a hand covering her bare breast.

While Spears didn’t offer any additional context for what prompted the nude photo or its bold caption, she did reveal during the hearings to end the 13 year conservatorship that controlled her life, she did not have the legal freedom to remove her IUD or try to have kids with now-husband Sam Asghari.

Michael Knox Promoted to President at Peermusic Nashville

Michael Knox has been promoted to president of peermusic Nashville. Knox, who joined the company in 2010, previously served as senior vp of peermusic Nashville.

Under Knox’s guidance, peermusic Nashville published the 2016 SESAC country song of the year, Dierks Bentley‘s “Somewhere on a Beach,” co-written by Michael Tyler and Jaron Boyer, as well as the 2013 ASCAP country music song of the year, Randy Houser‘s “How Country Feels” (co-written by Neil Thrasher and Vicky McGehee). Cyrus shared several selfies with his girlfriend, Australian singer Firerose, outdoors in a fall setting. In the images, the pair are embracing and smiling for the camera, with Firerose’s left hand pressed against Cyrus’ chest and showing off a ring on that finger. “Happy Autumn,” he captioned the carousel with an orange heart emoji.

Shortly after the post went up, fans of the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer flocked to the comments section to extend their well wishes and congratulations to the couple. “Happy Autumn to you & FIREROSE Billy Ray! I love the picture! You & FIREROSE look so amazing together! Love you both,” one fan wrote, while another commented, “Nice engagement ring congrats.”

Neither Cyrus nor Firerose have publicly commented on the engagement rumors. A rep for the country singer has not yet responded to Billboard‘s request for comment.

Fans began speculating about a romance between the country singer and Firerose in August, when she posted a picture of herself with Cyrus to wish him a happy birthday. “The world is a better place with you in it. Happy Birthday Billy,” she captioned the image with a red heart emoji.

Young Thug Sends James Harden Championship Message As NBA Seasons Tips Off

Young Thug might currently be incarcerated but he’s still managed to show some love to James Harden via social media as the new NBA season has tipped off.

On Tuesday night (October 18), the Philadelphia 76ers took on the Boston Celtics, and before the game the YSL head honcho took to Twitter to offer the star guard some words of encouragement.

“@JHarden13 get the ring this year,” he told the Philadelphia 76ers superstar guard who is still searching for his first NBA title. Harden replied to Young Thug: “I gotchu twin.”

The 76ers, unfortunately, opened their season with a loss to the defending Eastern Conference champions by a score of 126 to 117. Harden held his own in a strong debut with 35 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Harden and Young Thug have forged a friendship over the years. Thugger famously defended Harden after he was seen rocking a Blue Lives Matter mask during the summer of 2020.

“Just so u know James harden is my brada… btw he don’t have internet so he obviously don’t know what’s right or wrong if he posted something that’s against US,” Thug wrote. “But I hate when rappers get in n-ggas biz like it’s can’t happen to em buster let n-ggas clear they shit up activist.”

Gunna has filed a fourth motion to secure bond after being denied in his first three attempts. Gunna’s attorney, Steve Sadow, said the state has “failed to show adequate proof” that his client would be prone to “intimidating witnesses” if released.

“The defense produced real evidence that Kitchens is a good candidate for pretrial bond and has offered an abundance of conditions that will reasonably assure the Court that Kitchens poses no significant risk or threat to any person,” the filing reportedly reads. “Yet, for some unknown reason, the Court has repeatedly ignored this evidence and the proposed conditions.”

Rapper Slatt Zy Wanted By Police For Allegedly Kidnapping & Robbing Blogger At Gunpoint

Chattanooga, TN – Slatt Zy, a rapper from Chattanooga, Tennessee, is reportedly wanted by police for kidnapping and robbing a blogger at gunpoint — a crime he later bragged about on social media.

Slatt (real name Taizion Vinson) was allegedly involved in robbing Miko Worldwide — a YouTuber best known for his “hood vlog” series RAW Streets — of his chain, gun and money earlier this year.

Miko (born Michael Nichols) filmed a RAW Streets episode in Chattanooga in June. He returned to the city in late August, where he claims Slatt Zy and a group of others kidnapped and robbed him.

According to The Chattanoogan, Nichols told police he and two other videographers had met with a man near the Avondale Recreation Center in Chattanooga, but were ambushed by six to seven males — aged between 18 and 24 — who were carrying handguns.

The group led them to a house where Nichols claims he was hit in the face by a metal pan and another object, sustaining injuries on his cheek and forehead. The three victims then had their phones and wallets taken, with the assailants gaining access to Nichols’ finances.

After unsuccessfully attempting to siphon $10,000 and $15,000 from his bank account, the robbers withdrew two $500 transactions at an ATM and transferred $4,926 to a person named Shannon V via Cash App. An additional $700 was also drained from Nichols’ account.

The group later stole the keys to all the videographers’ vehicles and discovered a gun inside one. According to police, Nichols initially didn’t plan on pressing charges, until he saw a video of Slatt Zy and others bragging about the robbery on social media.

The video, uploaded in early September, shows the 20-year-old rapper holding up a gold chain and pendant allegedly belonging to Miko Worldwide. Slatt explained in the clip they targeted Miko because he “fucked a little boy.”

In 2020, the vlogger was arrested in Colombia and extradited to the U.S. after being convicted of offering drugs to a 10-year-old boy, sexually abusing him and tying him up and putting him in the trunk of a car in Georgia two years earlier.

“So y’all remember the Miko Worldwide n-gga who did that documentary, that vlog? That vid half an M right now on YouTube. And that lil’ shit came out about bruh fucking on that little boy?” Slatt said. “So basically what we did, we had bruh down here yesterday, we took his chain, took his blick, took his YouTube plaque.”

He added: “It ain’t even about him being gay, we ain’t got shit against gay muthafuckas. It’s just like bruh touching on kids and shit. He fucked a little boy.”

At the end of the video, Slatt and his accomplice offered to share footage of the robbery with Akademiks, No Jumper and other Hip Hop platforms in return for a “bag.”

Police were able to identify three of the assailants from the video, including Shannon Vinson, who has been arrested for aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

Two of the culprits were out on bond for weapon and drug offenses at the time, according to police. Nichols has identified a further two people who allegedly took part in the kidnapping and robbery.

It’s unclear what charges Slatt Zy is facing, but he’s reportedly looking at up to 75 years in prison for his role in the crime.
