Julian Lennon Unveils ‘Lucky Ones’ Music Video Following Advertising Week Premiere

Last Wednesday (Oct. 19), Billboard sat down with singer, songwriter and humanitarian Julian Lennon to discuss his new music video for the song “Lucky Ones,” The White Feather Foundation, and more. The video, which premiered wide on Monday (Oct. 24), lives at the intersection of art, technology and beauty, depicting a love for music that brings humans from different cultures together as they take steps to nurse our environment back to health.

“Lucky Ones” was directed by David Dutton and created using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Disco Diffusion and Stable Diffusion. The team started by using Google Notebook Colab to write AI code to the footage they shot and animated on a green screen.

When asked how he decided to use Artificial Intelligence, Dutton told Billboard, “The choice to use AI wasn’t just an experiment to make something viscerally stunning (though we think it is!), but a tool to afford our grand vision we had for this music video. It’s amazing how we were able to enhance the visual narrative with descriptive words. The technology is ground breaking and changing every week. It’s exciting to see what creatives will do next.”

In 2007, Lennon founded The White Feather Foundation to address environmental and humanitarian issues. It was created with the intent to work with partners worldwide to raise funds for the betterment of all life and to honor those who have made a difference. Over the years, he has dedicated his time to working on creative projects across mediums such as music, photography, documentaries, children’s books and more, while donating the majority of his profits to the foundation.

“Lucky Ones” is the single currently at radio on Julian Lennon’s most recent full-length, Jude. The album was released after the artist’s 11-year hiatus from releasing new music.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the transition of our beloved son, brother and friend, Zuri Craig. We thank you in advance for your prayers. Please honor our privacy at this unimaginable time of mourning,” they wrote in a tribute; the family said more information on Craig’s funeral is forthcoming.

Craig appeared on AGT during season 10, performing with Jeffrey Lewis as part of the Craig Lewis Band, which made it to the finals in 2015 thanks to killer covers of James Brown (“This is a Man’s World”) and Mary J. Blige (“I’m Goin’ Down”); the group finished fifth that year. The singer was also a regular in films from Tyler Perry, appearing in Medea’s Big Happy Family and A Medea Christmas in 2011 and singing in 2013’s Medea Gets a Job.

According to The Wrap, Craig was discovered after he posted a cover of The Brady Bunch theme song on YouTube in 2008, catching the ear of Perry, who then invited Craig and Lewis to appear in his stage show, Medea’s Big Happy Family. They then took the stage at AGT — earning a Golden Buzzer from guest panelist Michael Bublé — and released their 12-track full-length Must Be Love album in 2016.

Craig continued to appear on stage after his AGT run, including in The Perfect Pastor, The Truth About Black Men and The House That Misery Built. His production company, ZoReMi Entertainment, recently announced an upcoming live stage production of the beloved 1997 romantic drama Soul Food. At press time AGT had not reacted to Craig’s death.

WMG Chooses Ahmed Nureni to Lead Warner Music Middle East

Warner Music Middle East has a new general manager, with Ahmed Nureni chosen to replace a departing Moe Hamzeh. Nuhreni arrives from music distribution company Qanawat Music, which WMG acquired earlier this year, and will continue to be based in Dubai — though WMME’s headquarters and staff will remain in Beirut.

Nuhreni, who’ll report to Alfonso Perez-Soto, president of emerging markets at Warner Recorded Music, will continue to run Qanawat in tandem with his duties at Warner. In a statement, he said his “dual role will allow me to harness synergies from both businesses and be thoughtful and strategic in the way we grow Warner Music Middle East’s artist roster,” adding, “There’s so much creative potential in our region and we’re only just beginning to tap into it.”

WMME’s mandate is sprawling, covering a total of 17 markets: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

Hamzeh helped launch Warner Music Middle East in 2018; the company now says he is moving on to pursue other projects in music. He had previously been head of content at digital streaming platform m.media and, earlier in his career, worked at Temple Entertainment and Virgin Megastores.

Perez-Soto called Nureni a “brilliant exec who combines an amazing ear for music with a brilliant strategic mind,” adding, “With the support of our amazing team in Beirut, he’ll champion artists from the region and help them connect with a global audience. I’d also like to thank Moe Hamzeh for all his amazing support over the last five years and wish him good luck in his next adventures.”

Simon Robson, president of International at Warner Recorded Music, called the Middle East and North Africa a “priority market for us” as “highlighted by our accelerated activity in MENA in the last 18 months” — in early 2021 WMG invested in the region’s largest indie label, Rotana Music — “but we have further ambitious growth plans, which Ahmed will help us deliver.”

Here Are All the MusiCares Person of the Year Honorees

Motown legends Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson are poised to make history as the 2023 MusiCares person of the year recipients. As we reported when the news was announced on Thursday Oct. 20, it’s the first time that two individuals have been co-honorees at the annual fund-raising gala.

But that’s not the only way in which Gordy and Robinson will be making history. The two music greats will be the oldest person of the year honorees to date. Gordy turns 93 on Nov. 28. Robinson is 82. The oldest honoree until now was Joni Mitchell, who was 78 when she was honored earlier this year.

And Motown founder Gordy will be the first non-artist to receive the honor, as well as the first honoree who has not won a Grammy in competition. Gordy has received just one nomination – as a co-writer of the Jackson 5 smash “I’ll Be There,” a 1993 nominee for best R&B song. That requires explanation: The song wasn’t nominated when the J5 record was a hit, but it was nominated 22 years later when Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz covered it. (Gordy probably wasn’t too disappointed when it lost to a then-current Motown smash – Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.”)

Gordy and Robinson are the third and fourth person of the year honorees who are Motown royalty. Stevie Wonder received the honor in 1999. Lionel Richie received it in 2016.

According to MusiCares, the person of the year award “celebrates our honoree’s creative accomplishments and philanthropic work. This star-studded dinner and concert experience raises funds for MusiCares’ vital programs and relief efforts.”

That blurb hints at what MusiCares is looking for in an honoree. They certainly want to recognize an accomplished artist who seems worthy of the honor, but just as important, they want to sell tables and individual tickets, ads in the program book and auction offerings. So, they’re looking for someone who has the connections and history in the music industry to fill the room. That’s why most of the honorees are well along in their careers by the time they are selected.

The next person of the year event will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 at Los Angeles Convention Center – two days before the 65th annual Grammy Awards are presented at the adjoining Crypto.com Arena.

Here are all of the person of the year honorees to date, shown in reverse chronological order. All years refer to the year the person of the year event was held and the year of the corresponding Grammy telecast (or year of award presentations for the years before the launch of the live telecast in 1971.)

Spotify Launches ‘Your Wrapped Soundcheck’ For Artists to Connect With Top Fans

This year, Spotify is making the streamer’s annual year-end Wrapped campaign more artist-friendly.

Called Your Wrapped Soundcheck, the new feature, available via Spotify for Artists, will allow artists to upload videos thanking their biggest fans for a great year on Spotify, list their latest merch and ensure tickets for their upcoming shows are available on the platform. These videos and offers will then be promoted to top fans as a part of their Wrapped experience.

By uploading short, video messages of 30 seconds or less to their Spotify for Artists profiles, artists can let fans know what their support meant to them over the past year, tease what they’re working on next and/or tell a story that defined their year. Artists are encouraged to list merch on Shopify (the e-commerce giant that partnered with Spotify last October), and provide information regarding their upcoming concert dates on one of Spotify’s partner sites, plus set up a Fan Support account to collect end-of-year tips or drive donations to a charitable cause.

Artists are encouraged to prepare their profiles ahead of this year’s Wrapped season. Your Wrapped Soundcheck’s website provides step-by-step instructions to help artists get ready for the big day.

UTA Chief Urges Staff to ‘Please Support the Boycott of Kanye West’

Three of Hollywood’s top agency chiefs are now calling on the entertainment industry to cut ties with Kanye West given the rapper and fashion mogul’s antisemitic rhetoric on multiple platforms and interviews.

On Sunday evening, UTA chief Jeremy Zimmer sent a companywide memo to staff titled “Rise of Anti Semitism and Hate,” writing that West’s comments’ “embolden others to amplify their vile beliefs.”

Zimmer made reference to a widely circulated Oct. 23 photo of a group of seven people who stood on a 405 freeway overpass in Los Angeles with signs that included “Kanye is right about the Jews,” as well as The Mapping Project, an anonymous effort that purported to show links between Jewish businesses in Massachusetts and “support for the colonization of Palestine.”

“Whether it’s signs on the 405 in Los Angeles, flyers on doorsteps, mapping Jewish businesses in Boston, or marching with hoods and crosses, all of these behaviors ignite the embers of bigotry, and they must not be tolerated,” Zimmer wrote.

The Beverly Hills-based agency CEO’s missive follows a similarly themed Oct. 19 column in the Financial Times by Ari Emanuel, who runs the entertainment and sports company Endeavor, which owns talent agency WME. “Those who continue to do business with West are giving his misguided hate an audience,” Emanuel wrote. “There should be no tolerance anywhere for West’s anti-Semitism.”

Emanuel added: “West is not just any person — he is a pop culture icon with millions of fans around the world. And among them are young people whose views are still being formed.”

Meanwhile, Gersh agency president Bob Gersh weighed in on Sunday, telling Variety, “People really need to hammer these companies in business with him to impress upon them how wrong it is to support somebody like this.”

Following an appearance at Paris Fashion Week in which West donned a “White Lives Matter” shirt on Oct. 3, he went to post a since-removed Oct. 8 tweet that called for “death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE,” wrote posts on Instagram that were removed for violating content restrictions, made a stop on Fox News that included a controversial interview with Tucker Carlson (that later included unaired portions leaked to Vice News), taped an interview with the podcast Drink Champs (that was later removed from YouTube) and stopped for an interview on NewsNation with Chris Cuomo in which West said “I don’t believe in that term,” in reference to antisemitism.

Companies and partners that have business with West, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes to be at $2 billion, are under increasing pressure to cut ties with the rapper. Adidas, which has a distribution deal for West’s Yeezy shoe and fashion brand, stated earlier this month that it had placed its partnership “under review,” while French label Balenciaga cut ties on Oct. 21 and said it “no longer any relationship” with West.

In seeming response to having his tweets and Instagram posts restricted, West made a deal with the backers of a small social media platform called Parler. On Oct. 17, the company — which calls itself the “premier free speech social media app” — sent out a press release stating that it had agreed to sell itself to the artist. Parler’s CEO is George Farmer, the husband of conservative activist Candace Owens, who also donned the “White Lives Matter” shirt at Paris Fashion Week.

“With a whole lot of faith, trust and pixie dust she has arrived safely,” Perri, 36, wrote. Please welcome our magical double rainbow baby girl.” The joyous message was accompanied by a black and white image of Perri breastfeeding her daughter. The couple already share 4-year-old daughter Carmella Stanley and their newborn’s middle name is a tribute to their daughter Rosie, who was “born silent” in 2020.

The baby was reportedly experiencing intestinal complications and Perri revealed that the infant would have required surgery after birth. In January 2020, Perri suffered a miscarriage at 11 weeks. “We are shocked and completely heartbroken,” she wrote on social media. “We were only 1 week away from sharing the news so i feel like its also important to share this news too.”

Perri used the devastating loss to “help change the story & stigma around miscarriage, secrecy and shame,” she wrote. “i am so sad but not ashamed. i am ever reminded how amazing and powerful women are at making life and at healing. to all the mothers who have been here and who will be here, i see you and i love you.”

After the loss of Rosie, Perri released a lullabies album called Songs for Rosie. Then, in May of this year, the couple revealed that they were expecting with a message delivered by older sister Carmella, who opened a box with a pink balloon attached to it revealing sonogram pictures inside.

Mariah Carey Announces Pair of ‘Merry Christmas to All’ Concerts

Mariah Carey has some big plans for the holiday season. The reigning queen of all things red and green announced a pair of Christmas shows on Monday morning (Oct. 24) at which she will deck the halls with all her jingle bell best. “It’s almost time NEW YORK + Toronto!!!” she wrote. “Come celebrate Christmas with me this December! lil’ excited lil’ excited to be back on stage and get festive with everybody!!”

Tickets for the shows — Dec. 11 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Dec, 13 at Madison Square Garden in New York — will go on sale on Friday (Oct. 28) at 10 a.m. ET on Ticketmaster. Carey, as always, will be a major presence leading up to the holiday, via her illustrated holiday fairytale book, The Christmas Princess, due out on Nov. 1, as well as the annual chart watch to see if her perennial Christmas classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” will hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a fourth year in a row.

Last week, the Christmas Queen got fans excited to get in the spirit by teasing the kick-off to “All I Want” season by tweeting, “It’s almost time…,” in which she showed off her festive red robe draped on the steps leading to her luxurious jacuzzi-style bathtub. The scene was filled out with a giant display of red and white roses spelling out her initials.

But, before you get too revved up, as the first, twinkly notes of “All I Want” bubbled up, Mariah tapped the brakes and in a follow-up tweet cautioned, “Not yet.”

Check out the announcement below.
