A$AP Rocky Recreates Viral Mosh Pit Meme, Nods to ‘Weekend At Bernie’s‘ in ’S—tin‘ Me’ Music Video: Watch

It’s a weekend at A$AP’s. On Monday (Dec. 5), A$AP Rocky dropped an eclectic music video for his new song “Shittin’ Me,” and it features references to everything from his viral Rolling Loud mosh pit meme to the 1989 dark comedy Weekend at Bernie’s.

The Grin Machine-directed video begins with the 34-year-old rapper feeling on top of the world, wearing a flashy suit as he gives orders to an office of employees, leafing through stacks of dollar bills and dodging paparazzi camera flashes. Things take a turn for the worse, though, when he dives into a mosh pit and gets buried in a sea of fans — just like that viral, meme-generating moment from his Rolling Loud set earlier this year.

Rocky then collapses and dies in an empty room, but that doesn’t stop his “friends” in the video from puppeteering his dead body around town à la Weekend at Bernie’s. They continue benefitting off his fame and fortune, and film a video with him rigged to marionette strings.

Both the Krash-produced song — which dropped Friday (Dec. 2) — and the video were released in collaboration between Rocky’s creative agency AWGE and EA’s new video game Need for Speed Unbound. “Shittin’ Me” is featured in the game, as is the “F–kin Problems” rapper himself; he appears in-game as the leader of a new precision-driving mode called Takeover Events, where players can beat Rocky to win his custom-designed Mercedes 190 E.

“It has been a pleasure getting to be a creative collaborator with EA on the new Need for Speed game,” Rocky said in a statement. “’Shittin’ Me’ serves as the lead track from the game soundtrack and with so much excitement around it, it was only natural to also do a music video. Grin Machine did a great job paying homage to the game collaboration with AWGE with the fun wacky aesthetics, and shout out to krash and hec for the music as always.”

A Timeline of Britney Spears and Jamie Lynn Spears’ Public Relationship

Siblings fight, make up and then fight again — that’s true of any family. Yet one subplot of Britney Spears’ legal battle to end her 13-year conservatorship has been the seeming dissolution of her relationship with younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears, who was still in the single digits when a teenage Britney broke through to pop superstardom in the Y2K era.

The tension hasn’t always been there: Britney helped Jamie Lynn land her first acting gig, penned the theme song to her sister’s Zoey 101 sitcom, and was singing alongside her on her 2013 album, Britney Jean. In the wake of a series of explosive court hearings, however, there have been emotional videos, accusatory captions and even dueling emojis suggesting a fracture in their relationship. As Britney continues to call out her family and the part certain members played in her conservatorship, the publication of Jamie Lynn’s autobiography, Things I Should Have Said, added fuel to the fire in early 2022.

But by late 2022, it seemed that things may once again have changed in the siblings’ volatile relationship. An Instagram post on Britney’s 41st birthday read, “It’s my b-day but you’re my heart so I’m thinking about you. Congratulations on being so brave, inspiring, and showing guts and glory in your show !!! You ain’t alone … if anybody knows what that feels like … I get it. My baby sister !!! I love you !!!”

What happened to Britney and Jamie Lynn’s close bond — and when did it start to break? We chart the ups and downs of their public relationship below.

SoundCloud, Third & Hayden Team Up for Joint Venture

SoundCloud has linked up with Third & Hayden, the Atlanta management and services company founded by music exec Kei Henderson, for a joint venture, the companies announced today (Dec. 5). The new venture will see Third & Hayden signing new acts to its label and developing them with the help of SoundCloud’s services division, which will provide marketing, A&R, distribution and promotion support, as well as financial backing.

The first two acts to sign to the new venture are Los Angeles singer/songwriter Jordan Hawkins and Atlanta-based rapper Key!.

The deal is the latest for SoundCloud’s new roster initiative, which has previously inked a joint venture with Quality Control’s Solid Foundation Management to work on new acts and signed distribution deals with Lil Pump, Tekno and Aly & AJ to release forthcoming projects. Henderson, meanwhile, has an extensive background as a manager over the past decade, beginning with Key! 10 years ago, who then introduced her to 21 Savage in the mid-2010s; Henderson would go on to co-manage Savage for several years as he rose from the mixtape circuit into one of the most influential rappers of the past half-decade. Henderson then co-founded SinceThe80s, a joint venture with Motown/Capitol Music Group, where she first worked with Hawkins, and founded Third & Hayden, which also manages artists like Asiahn, Ben Reilly and Kenneth Whalun, among others.

“We want artists to find success as independents to set the foundation for long-term careers and move through their careers with leverage, and creative control. What we were able to build with 21 Savage early and again with SinceThe80s is the blueprint for the way we’re working with our artists and I’m so thankful to have been a part of both of these brands from the start,” Henderson said in a statement announcing the deal. “SoundCloud is typically one of the first touch points for indie artists and I feel a great part of my career has been brand building with artists from day zero — for this reason they’re the best partner for what we’re building. We’re being intentional on ground up development.”

In an interview with Billboard, Henderson further broke down the reasoning for going with SoundCloud, after previously working through Distrokid and then Epic Records for 21 Savage and with Motown/Capitol with SinceThe80s.

“I think it was the understanding that building isn’t an overnight thing,” she said. “It will allow me to fund their careers from a startup level in a way that includes advances, recording budgets and marketing budgets. We’re always gonna be scrappy and resourceful, but it’s always nice to have a little bit of money to be able to do certain things with. So we’ll be able to activate digitally a little more than we would be able to as a completely unfunded independent, and I like that, and it also allows me to have access to a full team. Because the team they’re hiring at SoundCloud looks like a label, but not everybody is from a label background, so the thinking is a little bit different and the approach to how we market an artist is a little bit different.”

In the past few years, SoundCloud has pivoted its business model away from being solely a streaming platform and more towards becoming first a distributor, then towards full-service artist and label support, a shift that is concurrent with similar moves across the industry. The company has also introduced user-centric royalties, what it calls Fan-Powered Royalties, that pay artists based on the number of streams that they accrue rather than through market share of total streams; in July, SoundCloud struck a deal with the Warner Music Group to allow the major’s artists to get paid in that way on its platform, in addition to indie artists.

“Kei has a proven track record of finding and fostering the next generation of talent, so partnering with Third & Hayden was simply the right fit,” SoundCloud’s global senior vp/general manager Jessica Rivera said in a statement. “We’re excited about developing this joint venture with such a respected industry leader and creative who shares SoundCloud’s dedication to providing solutions and empowering artists as they take their careers to the next level on their own terms.”

In addition to the joint venture, Henderson recently opened console by 2NDBDRM in Atlanta, a record shop, listening room and retail space in the city’s Ponce City Market for artists and music fans in the city to have a community space to come together, which will feature some small-scale performances and in-store appearances, consistentl with her idea of wanting to grow artists’ careers not just digitally, but through live events and in-person experiences.

“I don’t think what works for one artist works for every single artist, so we do take into consideration how the artist wants to build their career over a long period of time,” Henderson says about the approach the label will take. “Some artists may feel like, after three projects, I want to go to a major, and that’s perfectly fine. So I want to leave it open-ended: whatever you want to do, let’s put a team around the artist that gets us to that long-term goal.”

Overall, Henderson says, the goal is to build an actual audience for artists, a prospect increasingly difficult in a TikTok world where virality can mean a record deal, but not necessarily a dedicated fan base. “I think what we’re missing in the industry as a whole is, everyone’s in such a hurry to get their money back, and I get that from a business perspective,” she says. “But from a manager perspective, it’s like, some of you want to get your money back but you’re not actually building a fan base or building a connection between the fan and the artist. And sometimes that takes a little bit longer to get it done properly.”

Chart Rewind: In 1987, Belinda Carlisle’s ‘Heaven Is a Place on Earth’ Ascended to No. 1

By 1987, Belinda Carlisle had become a chart mainstay. Five years earlier, she and her Los Angeles pop-punk band The Go-Go’s became the first all-female group to top the Billboard 200 when their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, spent six weeks at No. 1 in 1982. The same year, the quintet followed with the top 10 LP Vacation and, in 1984, the top 20 Talk Show. They also scored five top 40 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat.”

The Go-Go’s went on hiatus after Talk Show, but Carlisle didn’t slow down. Her 1986 debut solo LP, Belinda, reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and spawned a No. 3 Hot 100 hit, “Mad About You.”

It wasn’t until the end of the following year that Carlisle, then 29, made her first solo trip to the top of the Hot 100 with “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” which crowned the Dec. 5, 1987, chart. The song’s popularity was helped by an artsy music video directed by actress Diane Keaton featuring women in bandit masks holding illuminated globes.

In 2013, Rick Nowels recalled the process of co-writing “Heaven”: “[Co-writer] Ellen [Shipley] had the title ‘Heaven on Earth.’ I was playing around with a Prince-type rhythm and sang ‘Heaven Is a Place on Earth.’ We both decided it was more original.

“The first draft of the song had a different minor-key verse along with the minor-key chorus,” Nowels recalled. “We actually recorded it with Belinda and I began to feel that the chorus was a hit, but the verse was not great. So, Ellen and I got together and quietly rewrote the verse. I knew I wanted to modulate into the chorus, which is why the pre-chorus goes to a different key and then back to the original key for the chorus. I had to tell Belinda that we rewrote the song … and had to rerecord it. As soon as we played it for her, she agreed.”

For all involved, including engineer/mixer Shelly Yakus, the rewards were clearly worth the efforts. “I put a lot of time into the arrangement of the song,” said Nowels, who has also penned hits for Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Santana, John Legend and Lana Del Rey, among others.

This June, Nowels was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Heaven on Earth generated two more Hot 100 top 10s, the Diane Warren-penned “I Get Weak” (No. 2 peak) and fellow Nowels-Shipley composition “Circle in the Sand” (No. 7). 1989 follow-up Runaway Horses added the top 40 hits “Leave a Light On” and “Summer Rain” to her catalog.

Having overcome drug addiction, which she chronicled in her 2011 biography Lips Unsealed, “It’s surreal for a Valley Girl to go from working as a secretary to hitting the top of the charts,” Carlisle told Billboard in 2013. “It still makes me smile to think about it now.”

In October 2017, Carlisle’s latest album, Wilder Shores, a collection of Buddhist chants and mantras (inspired by her longtime passion for Kundalini yoga), hit No. 4 on both the New Age Albums and World Albums charts.

In 2021, The Go-Go’s were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “What a great way to cement the legacy,” Carlisle told Billboard.

On Dec. 15, Carlisle is set to celebrate the season with a holiday show at The Abbey in West Hollywood, Calif., with special guests including Lisa Loeb, Margaret Cho and Wilson Phillips’ Carnie and Wendy Wilson. (Carnie Wilson and Wilson Phillips’ Chynna Phillips provided backup vocals on Heaven on Earth.) The charity fundraiser will benefit Animal People Alliance.

Universal Music to Expand ‘Bonus Tracks’ Early Career Development Program to Atlanta, Detroit

Universal Music Group (UMG) will expand its early career development program, Bonus Tracks, to Atlanta’s Frederick Douglass High School and through Motown Museum’s Hitsville NEXT in Detroit in the coming spring semester, the company tells Billboard. Last spring, UMG completed its first year in New York at Brooklyn’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH).

Bonus Tracks is dedicated to discovering and developing a diverse set of future executive talent by giving students in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to learn about the music industry through immersive programming while being provided with transferrable skills. During the multi-week program, participants attend weekly meetings at a UMG label with executives from all areas of the company, including creative, marketing, commercial partnerships and promotion.

UMG has also created the Bonus Tracks Scholarship Award, a college scholarship that will be given to one Bonus Tracks student in each city who are recognized for their community leadership, commitment to academic excellence and completion of the program, including the presentation of their capstone project.

The Bonus Tracks program was launched in 2019 in partnership with Capitol Music Group (CMG) and the Compton Unified School District at Dominguez High School in Los Angeles. It later expanded to Nashville through Capitol Christian Music Group and Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School. It was founded by Brian Nolan, executive vp and executive vp of marketing at Motown; Patrick Stephens, manager of brand partnerships at CMG; and Micah Ali, president emeritus of the Compton School District.

“We’re excited to see Bonus Tracks continue to expand and look forward to bringing the program to students in Detroit and Atlanta,” said Nolan. “We knew Bonus Tracks could thrive and scale in the most meaningful ways in order to reach the next generation of music industry leaders. I am grateful to Micah Ali for his partnership in this incredible journey and to UMG for fully embracing and supporting the vision of the program: inspiration, education, and pathway.”

“Bonus Tracks has always been about giving students the opportunity to learn about career pathways in a way that meets their passion for music and curiosity about the industry,” added Ali. “As this program moves into its fifth year, I’m incredibly honored to continue to expand this program to reach students across the country.”

“Motown Museum’s Hitsville NEXT is devoted to supporting creativity in today’s young artists, entrepreneurs and changemakers,” said Robin Terry, chairwoman and CEO of the Motown Museum. “Partnering with Bonus Tracks is a perfect reflection of our mission. We can’t wait to work with the entire Detroit Public School system and grow this great program in our community.”

“With Atlanta being the music capital of the south, Frederick Douglass High School has produced some of the most famous music industry icons such as T.I., Lil Jon, and Killer Mike, to name a few, said Erika Y. Mitchell, a school board member of Atlanta Public Schools. “Bonus Tracks will create pathways for our students to learn about the music industry’s business, provide mentorships with music executives, and allow our students post-graduation to have access to internships at Universal Music Group or receive a scholarship toward college.”

Mitchell added that she’s “looking forward to expanding” the Bonus Tracks program to Atlanta’s Benjamin E. Mays High School “in the near future.”

“It is critically important for UMG to provide early career opportunities as an investment in the future of this industry, both from a business and fan perspective,” said Natoya Brown, senior vp of people inclusion and culture at UMG. “Bonus Tracks is a way to begin discovering and cultivating the next generation of music industry leaders.”

The 1975’s Matty Healy Jams Out With Dashboard Confessional at Audacy Beach Festival

The 1975‘s Matty Healy was back in his safe space on Sunday (Dec. 4) at the Audacy Beach Festival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida over the weekend when he jumped on stage to join Dashboard Confessional for the final song of the emo band’s set. Healy strapped on an electric guitar and strummed for his life as DC ran through the raucous “Hands Down” from the band’s beloved 2003 album A Mark, A Mission, a Brand, a Scar.

“Emo multiverse is glitching @dashboardconfessional,” Healy wrote on Instagram along with a clip of the surprise moment.

For longtime fans, however, it wasn’t that much of a stretch for the two men to hit the stage together. Healy has long expressed his love for the Chris Carrabba-fronted band. In 2019, Healy hopped up on stage with DC at St. Pancras Old Church in London where they collaborated on a performance of the 1975’s “Sex,” with DC covered in 2017 on their Covered and Taped covers EP.

It was the latest stage surprise on the 1975’s current North American At Their Very Best tour, during which Healy has rolled out a series of seemingly unscripted moments, including the frontman sneaking a brief, passionate smooch with bassist Ross MacDonald during a show in San Francisco on Nov. 29, laying a kiss on a fan onstage and eating raw meat during a gig.

The 1975 are nearing the end of the tour, which is slated to hit Denver’s Mission Ballroom on Tuesday night (Dec. 6) and wrap up at the Robert Morris University UPMC Events Center in Pittsburgh on Dec. 17.

Aerosmith Cancel Second Las Vegas Residency Gig Due to Steven Tyler’s Illness

Aerosmith informed fans on Sunday night (Dec. 4) that the band’s scheduled Deuces Are Wild Las Vegas residency show scheduled for Monday night (Dec. 5) has been cancelled due to singer Steven Tyler‘s ongoing illness.

“Unfortunately tomorrow’s show, Monday December 5th, in Las Vegas has to be cancelled,” read a Twitter statement from the band. “Steven Tyler said, ‘On the advice of my doctor, I’m taking more time to rest… There is nowhere we’d rather be than on stage surrounded by the greatest fans in the world. We sincerely apologize.”

At press time, the band had not shared any additional information on what is ailing the 74-year-old singer. This is the second show Aerosmith has cancelled this week due to Tyler’s sickness. On Friday they wrote, “it is with great disappointment that we are forced to cancel tonight’s show in Las Vegas due to Steven feeling unwell and unable to perform.”

At the time, they anticipated being back on stage tonight. The band said that tickets purchased through Ticketmaster for the show will be automatically refunded; all other refunds will be available at point of purchase. The band’s current Deuces run is slated to wind up later this week with shows on Thursday (Dec. 8) and Sunday (Dec. 11) and at press time those shows at Dolby Live at Park MGM were still on their schedule.

Earlier this summer, Aerosmith cancelled some shows to allow Tyler to voluntarily enter a treatment program after the singer who has struggled with addiction issues in the past said he relapsed after using pain meds following foot surgery.

Elton John will complete his final lap of the U.K. with a performance on one of the biggest stages of them all — Glastonbury Festival.

The Rocket Man will lift off at the Pyramid Stage on Sunday, June 25, the final night of Glastonbury 2023, for what promises to be a set littered with classics.

“It gives me enormous pleasure to let you know that the one and only Elton John will be making his first ever Glastonbury appearance, headlining the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday night next year,” writes Glastonbury’s co-organizer Emily Eavis, daughter of founder Michael Eavis. “This will be the final U.K. show of Elton’s last ever tour, so we will be closing the Festival and marking this huge moment in both of our histories with the mother of all send offs. Elton is calling time on his extraordinary touring career with a fittingly epic trek, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.

Dates began in 2018 and, when it wraps next July at Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, it’s expected to set the bar as the highest grossing tour of all time. It’s just the third tour in history to pass the $600 million threshold, following U2’s 360 Tour ($736.4 million), and Ed Sheeran’s The Divide Tour ($776.4 million).

The British pop legend completed his final run of North America last month with a string of dates at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, the final of which was captured for the special, Elton John Live From Dodger Stadium, which streams exclusively on Disney+.

Established in 1970, Glastonbury is the grandaddy of U.K. festivals. And with its enviable reputation as a rite of passage and the place where all the giants of contemporary music get to work, Glastonbury has already sold out its 2023 edition long before the final bill is announced.

Next year’s event, held once again at the Eavis’ Worthy Farm, in south west England, is expected to host about 200,000 people.
