Madonna Celebrates Her Upcoming Tour With FKA Twigs, Kim Petras, Paris Hilton & More: See the Clip

Madonna‘s upcoming world tour is already poised to be quite the celebration. Now, all she needs are some people to celebrate with.

In a new video posted on her Twitter Sunday (Jan. 29), Madonna gets some help commemorating her career-spanning Celebration Tour from a host of special guests. Asking at the video’s start “I really want to know if you guys are excited that I’m going on tour,” the singer cedes the screen to a series of artists — including FKA Twigs, Kim Petras, Paris Hilton, Honey Dijon, Quavo, Ab-Soul, Bob the Drag Queen, Arca, Tokischa, Jozzy, Teezo Touchdown, Evan Mock and Jozzy — all offering emphatic yeses.

For at least one of those stars, the excitement is about more than just the prospect of seeing a new Madonna show. Bob the Drag Queen, the winner of season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is set to appear as a special guest on the circuit. Celebrating the announcement two weeks back, the drag star tweeted a photo of herself dressed in a Madonna-inspired outfit on Drag Race next to a photo of the pair hanging out. “We’ve come a long way,” the queen wrote.

The tour has already sold out in multiple major cities, leading to Madonna adding 13 new dates to accommodate the demand from fans. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the icon took a moment to relish her recent achievements. “I’m about to create another show, and I’ve been working for several years on the screenplay about my life,” she said. “This is a good time for me — I’m gathering ideas, getting inspired, hanging out with creative people, watching films, seeing art, listening to music.”

While that screenplay was in the process of being transformed into a biopic of the singer’s life, Madonna’s representatives recently revealed that the production was officially being put on hold so that the singer could focus on her world tour.

NLE Choppa Leads Peaceful Protest in Memphis Honoring Tyre Nichols

Memphis continues to mourn the death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, who was brutally attacked and killed by five Black police officers after a Jan. 7 traffic stop. On Saturday (Jan. 28), rapper NLE Choppa took matters into his own hands when he led a peaceful protest to honor Nichols.

“Today, I felt it on my heart to turn a negative situation to a positive. I actually went to sleep dwelling on how I could wake up today and do that,” he said in a video posted to social media “I just want to skate for Tyre in respect to him and know that’s how he would have wanted everybody to act.”

The Memphis rapper began the protest at 4687 Cottonwood Road alongside adults and children with his skateboard. “No justice, no peace, we gon’ skate for Tyre,” he chanted. He later thanked his supporters for joining the protest and expressed gratitude for everyone’s involvement. “I know it’s hard for us to all come together, and it’s kinda sad it takes something tragic for us to do this,” he told the group. “But I’m grateful for it for everybody to be together, so I just want to thank y’all for being a part of this.”

Bodycam and surveillance footage of Nichols’ altercation with police was released on Jan. 27, and prompted responses from many celebrities. “My heart is crushed. I couldn’t watch the full video because it hurt so much to see something like that. I pray for those with hate in their hearts. I pray for the lost souls of people. There is no need to take anyone’s life. Rest In Peace Tyre. #JusticeForTyre,” said Ciara.

Former President Barack Obama shared similar sentiments on Instagram. “The vicious, unjustified beating of Tyre Nichols and his ultimate death at the hands of five Memphis police officers is just the latest, painful reminder of how far America still has to go in fixing how we police our streets,” he wrote. “Along with mourning Tyre and supporting his family, it’s up to all of us to mobilize for lasting change.”

Nichols’ injuries led to his hospitalization and death. Footage of the incident also showed him screaming out for his mother, crying, “I’m just trying to get home.” The five police officers have since been fired and charged with murder.

Warner Music Group Partners With Roblox on Rhythm City

Warner Music Group will launch Rhythm City — a “music-themed social roleplay experience” — on the gaming platform Roblox on February 4th.

Not only will Rhythm City host events and shows from Warner’s artists, it will allow users to take on roles like DJ, producer, or dancer as they explore the virtual world and purchase digital items only available on Roblox. Rhythm City was developed in partnership with Gamefam, a metaverse-focused gaming and content company.

Warner is the latest music company to partner with Roblox, which has been around for more than 15 years but exploded in popularity with young users during the pandemic. Sony Music and BMG announced partnerships with Roblox in 2021. Spotify became “the first music-streaming brand to have a presence on Roblox” last year.

Earlier this month, Roblox announced that it had more than 61 million daily active users in December who spent close to 5 billion hours on the platform. It’s no surprise, then, that record companies are eager to find new ways to seed their music to Roblox users.

“Immersive online environments represent a meaningful opportunity for reaching a growing number of fans who want to use virtual communities to enjoy shared music experiences,” Dennis Kooker, Sony Music’s president of global digital business and U.S. sales, said in 2021. When BMG announced its Roblox partnership, Christopher Ludwig, BMG’s vp of global digital partnerships and strategy, noted that the platform “has transformed the gaming experience for millions and is proving a powerful way to introduce new generations to music they love.”

In a statement announcing Rhythm City, Oana Ruxandra, chief digital officer and evp, business development at Warner Music Group, struck a similar tone. “As our lives become increasingly digital, exciting opportunities are opening up for artists and fans to engage and interact,” she said. “WMG is focused on facilitating the foundations of these new experiences by building and experimenting across evolving ecosystems. This partnership with Gamefam sees WMG creating a place for artists and audiences to come together to define and contextualize their communities within living spaces.”

Joe Ferencz, founder and CEO at Gamefam, added that “we are thrilled to have a chance to combine our passion for developing authentic, highly-engaging metaverse content with our love of music.” “WMG has been a brilliant partner in pushing innovative strategies, and together with our expertise, we’ve channeled that into production excellence creating a new community for music lovers in the metaverse,” he continued.

Warner acts, including Twenty One Pilots and David Guetta, have previously hosted virtual concerts on Roblox.

Damar Hamlin Releases Video Thanking Bills, Fans For Support

HipHopWired Featured Video

Buffalo Bills v Miami Dolphins

Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills who suffered a medical issue during a Monday Night Football contest, made his first public statements since the harrowing incident. In the video, Hamlin thanked the Bills, the fans, and the NFL for supporting him during his recovery.

Damar Hamlin, 24, posted the video to his Instagram account titled “From The Heart,” and he opened up the clip by stating that he is still processing the gravity of the moment on all levels. Hamlin collapsed on the field on Jan. 2 as the Bills were battling it out with the Cincinnati Bengals. As the disturbing image went wide, former players such as Shannon Sharpe and others stood in solidarity with Hamlin and applauded the Bills and Bengals for stopping the game.

Hamlin made his first public appearance a week ago ahead of releasing this current video during Buffalo’s playoff loss against the Bengals. Hamlin’s time at the stadium sparked a flurry of silly controversy with people alleging the team was using a body double.

“I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of all the love, all the support and everything that’s just been coming in my way,” Hamlin said. “What happened to me on ‘Monday Night Football’ I feel is a direct example of God using me as a vessel to share my passion and my love directly from my heart with the entire world and I’m able to give it back to kids and communities all across the world who need it the most, and that’s always been my dream.”

Salute to Damar Hamlin.

Just three months after dropping her fifth studio album, Takin’ It Back, Trainor stopped by the TODAY show Monday (Jan. 30) morning to share her exceptionally well-timed joint announcements. First, Dear Future Mamas‘ due date is April 25 this year, and second, her baby on the way is expected to arrive this summer.

“What a blessing,” the “Made You Look” singer also told People of her pregnancy news. “I’m just so grateful I can get pregnant. And I’m like, ‘I’m crushing it. This is amazing. This is my dreams.’ I’m halfway there — I want four kids!”

She also shared the baby announcement on Instagram with a photo of her sonogram. “BABY #2 COMING THIS SUMMER,” the singer captioned a snap of herself holding up the series of images.

Trainor, who’s four months pregnant, and Sabara first became parents in February 2021, when they welcomed their son, Riley. The “All About That Bass” musician’s experiences being pregnant with and giving birth to Riley will serve as the focus of Dear Future Mamas, which will also include “TMI real talk” about body image, the newborn days and insights from the artist’s own personal trainer, registered dietitian, husband and ob-gyn, according to a release.

“After feeling so overwhelmed and alone in my first pregnancy, I was inspired to write this book to make sure no other future mama ever felt like that,” Trainor said in a statement. “I want to give future mamas permission to find the right path for them — without the judgment of others. I want this book to feel like a hug from a bestie.”

Adriana Restrepo Named Regional Director for IFPI Latin America and Caribbean

Colombian record executive Adriana Restrepo has been appointed IFPI’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean. Restrepo will now head the global record music organization’s regional operations in Latin American and the Caribbean, based out of the organization’s offices in Miami and reporting directly to IFPI chief executive Frances Moore.

Restrepo takes over the post vacated by Javier Asensio, who served as regional director of the IFPI since 2011. Asensio, who’s been on Billboard’s Latin Power Player list on multiple occasions, stepped down from his role at the end of 2022 to return to his native Spain.

“Having worked directly with Adriana for a number of years as she served on our boards, I know first-hand the level of passion, commitment and knowledge of the Latin American music sector that she brings to the role,” said Moore in a statement. “I would also like to thank Javier who has been outstanding in overseeing our work in the region for over a decade and achieved so much during a period of rapid change and evolution in the market.”

Restrepo comes from a business and recording industry background and is one of the very few women who have headed record labels, including multinationals, in Latin America. She was most recently president of Sony Music Andes, based in Bogotá, Colombia, and overseeing Sony’s operation in the Andean region, which includes Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Prior to that, Restrepo was president of powerful Colombian indie Codiscos, one of the region’s oldest and most respected labels and publishers, with a vast catalogue of tropical and popular music.

Restrepo comes to the post at a time when the Latin American music industry is on a path of massive growth. Recorded music revenues in Latin America grew 31% in 2021, exceeding $1 billion in revenues for the first time, and making it the 12th year of consecutive growth for the region.

Restrepo, who served on the IFPI’s main board between 2018 and 2020 is familiar with the organization.

“The region is experiencing a stellar moment due to the massive production of new talent for the entire world,” she said in a statement. “I will continue the good work developed by Javier with the National Groups and the collective management organisations seeking to reach new goals for the benefit of IFPI members.”

At Sony Andes, Maria Mercedes “Mechas” Montejo has been appointed to lead the company.

“We will miss Adriana here at Sony Music Latin Iberia, but we are thrilled to know that her professionalism and experience will be of service to the entire Latin music industry in her new role.  We wish her all the best,” said Afo Verde, chairman & CEO Latin America, Spain and Portugal for Sony Music Entertainment.

Verde, and the other regional label heads will be working closely with Restrepo, as they do traditionally with IFPI leadership, and support for Restrepo has been unanimous.

“Adriana brings experience, knowledge and a great capacity for work, at a time when the challenges we face in Latin America continue to be enormous.  There is nobody better than her to continue the great job done by Javier Asensio during the last decade,” said Jesús López, chairman & CEO, Universal Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula, Universal Music Group.

Added Alejandro Duque, president, Warner Music Latin America: “I’ve known Adriana for many years and believe she has the right qualities and commitment to lead and execute our industry’s agenda in the region for years to come.”

Shania Twain Was So Sick With COVID-Induced Pneumonia She Was Airlifted to a Swiss Hospital

Shania Twain has overcome a number of serious health issues during her career, battles with Lyme disease and dysphonia that robbed the singer of her signature powerhouse country pop voice and led to an extended break in the early and mid 2000s, as well as throat surgery in 2018 to shore up her weakened nerves.

But in a new interview with England’s The Mirror, the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” star said she was so sick during the pandemic that she had to be airlifted to a Swiss hospital. “It was progressively getting worse. My vital signs were getting worse… and in the end I had to be air evacuated,” Twain told the paper about the time she got COVID pneumonia in the midst of the global pandemic while in Lake Geneva, Switzerland and got so sick she could hardly breathe.

“It was like science fiction, I felt like I was going to another planet or something,” she said of the surreal helicopter ride to a local health clinic. “It all kind of happened in slow motion.” Luckily, Twain added, husband Frédéric Thiébaud — a Swiss exec for Nestlé — was there with her through the health ordeal, scrambling to find a scarce bed for his sick wife.

“My husband was freaking out, to be honest. He was really panicking because he was the one having to pull it all together,” she said of his rush to get her help. “He spent hours and hours every day on the phone, trying to get an air evacuation coordinated, trying to get a bed lined up, as there were none, checking my vital signs. It was just a real nightmare for him.”

Once they found a bed, Twain, 57, said she was placed in isolation and given plasma therapy drugs during a frightening episode. “It took several days to start building up any antibodies at all, so it was a very dangerous time and very scary,” she said. “I made it through and I’m just so grateful.”

Soon enough, Twain began to recover and begin working on her upcoming sixth studio album, Queen of Me, which is due out on Friday (Feb. 3).
