Earlier this week, it was announced Miami Marlins’ electric All-Star Jazz Chisholm is the new cover athlete for the 2023 edition of The Show. New York Yankees fans rejoice. Derek Jeter is gracing the cover of the MLB The Show 23: The Captain Edition.

The announcement of the Captain Edition of MLB The Show 23 came last night during the World Series-winning/ Hall-of-Fame shortstop’s visit to The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon Show.

The 14x All-Star, 5x World Series Champion, 5x Silver Slugger, 2000 World Series MVP, and former CEO of the Miami Marlins is the latest MLB pro to grab a collector’s edition cover of the game, and honestly is a fantastic choice.

It has to be epic when putting someone of Derek Jeter’s stature on the cover of a game. PlayStation Studios contracted visual artist Sanford Greene to envision the larger-than-life athlete on the cover to make that happen.

On the cover, Jeter is drawn jumping out of Yankee Stadium, aka The House That Jeter built, flanked by tons of easter eggs for New York Yankees and MLB fans to spot.

Along with The Captain’s Edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition was also announced. Anyone who purchases the Collector’s Editions, The Digital Deluxe Edition, or The Captain Edition of MLB The Show 23 will get early access to the game.

BET has announced that it will be airing a four-part docuseries to highlight the legacies and accomplishments of Black creatives across several mediums including dance, fashion, music and film. And who better to host the first episode of the series than actor, writer, director, singer and frequent red carpet slayer Billy Porter?

According to Variety, Porter will kick off the new series, titled Black + Iconic, by narrating, hosting and executive producing the first part, Black + Iconic: Style Gods, which will be directed by producer, director and CEO of Black Robin Media, Lynne Robinson. The series was developed by showrunners Connie Orlando and Jason Samuels and supervising producer Steven Ramey.

“We’re thrilled to be working with BET again after the success of our first project together, ‘Through the Fire: The Legacy of Barack Obama,’” said Stanley Nelson, a Firelight Films co-founder who will produce the series. “I couldn’t think of a better home for this series celebrating Black icons via the numerous mediums through which Black creatives have made an indelible mark on the culture.”

The first episode of the series, which has a two-hour run time, will premiere Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. on BET+, BET, BET Her and VH1.

We’re here for any programming that celebrates the Black excellence of Black creatives, and Billy Porter deserves all the shine he can get. So, this is definitely a good look from BET. One can only wonder what other Black icons will be featured in the series.

Dame Dash Says Jay-Z Only Offered Him $1.5M For His Stake Of Roc-A-Fella

It seems Dame Dash and Jay-Z are still not on good terms; even professionally. He says Hov only offered him 1.5 million for his stake of Roc-A-Fella Records.

As spotted Complex the outspoken mogul continues to be vocal as ever regarding all the ups and downs of bossing up. Recently the Harlem, New York native was as a guest on VEUIT TV. While he and the host discussed a variety of topics Dame’s reveal regarding his piece of the iconic record label quickly went viral. “When I was offered a certain amount of money for my interest in Roc-A-Fella Inc., which owns Reasonable Doubt, they offered me, like, a million and a half dollars—Jay-Z. And I was like, ‘That’s some disrespectful sh*t. So, I guess I have to sell it someplace else.’”

In 2022 Dash decided to take his percentage of the brand and sell it as a NFT as per his cousin and legal eagle Ronald Sweeney. The sale was quickly halted as Roc-A-Fella claimed Dame could not legally move forward with the sale. “The bottom line is simple: Dash can’t sell what he doesn’t own,” the company responded, as per by Rolling Stone. “By attempting such a sale, Dash has converted a corporate asset and has breached his fiduciary duties. His planned auction of Reasonable Doubt would result in irreparable harm. The Court should stop Dash from attempting to sell the copyright to Reasonable Doubt, require Dash to return the NFT of Reasonable Doubt to RAF, Inc., and hold him accountable for this brazen theft of RAF, Inc.’s most prized asset.”

Dash claims the lawsuit was based on inaccurate information saying “I got the lawsuit, ’cause again, I got accused of doing something I didn’t, to stop me from doing it, and then everybody just went missing,” he explained. “So I had to deal with the lawsuit on my own.” Luckily, the parties came to the agreement  where he could sell his portion of Roc-A-Fella Records but “dispose of any property interest in Reasonable Doubt.”

Taylor Swift Drops ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ Vinyl in the Perfect Color Ahead of 2023 Grammys

Taylor Swift surprised Swifties on Thursday (Feb. 2) with a new version of Red (Taylor’s Version) on vinyl, and it’s finally available in, you guessed it, burning red.

“How are we celebrating All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (The Short Film)’s #GRAMMYs nominations? Dancing ‘round the kitchen in the refrigerator light…and heading to store.taylorswift.com to get #RedTaylorsVersionVinyl in burning red, while supplies last,” Taylor Nation shared on its social media accounts to spread the news.

Previously, the red edition of the re-recording had only been available as a Target exclusive, while the vinyl sold from Swift’s official webstore was just basic black when the album was released in Nov. 2021. At the time, the fan favorite record moved 605,000 album equivalent units to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Of that number, 114,000 were vinyl sales, and Red (Taylor’s Version) ultimately ended the year as the third top-selling vinyl of 2021 after just seven weeks of sales.

While some fans clamored in the comments for info on the next re-recording their queen might have up her sleeve — ahem, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), anyone? — others were happy to revel in the refrigerator light of their favorite autumn album. “I remember this era all too well,” one fan commented. Others added sentiments like, “it’s always time for the red era,” “More like all too unwell now,” and “red (taylor’s version) as a red vinyl??? absolute PERFECTION!!!” (There was also a particularly hilarious joker, who couldn’t help deadpanning, “We were all wrong Red (Taylor’s Version) was actually next.”)

At this weekend’s Grammy Awards, Swift’s ten-minute version of “All Too Well” is up for both song of the year and best music video. Meanwhile, vault track “I Bet You Think About Me” earned a nomination for best country song and “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing got a nod for best song written for visual media.

The six-member girl group’s first single in Japan ruled physical sales with 321,717 copies sold in its first week. In other metrics of the chart’s measurement, the single came in at No. 7 for video views, No. 14 for radio airplay, No. 41 in downloads, and No. 55 in streaming, leading this week’s song chart with 9,376 points overall.

After scoring its 12th week at No. 1 on the Japan Hot 100 last week, Official HIGE DANdism’s “Subtitle” slows down in all metrics besides radio and slips to No. 2 for the first time in nine weeks with 8,687 overall points, down by about 8 percent from the previous week.

This week saw the breakthrough of girl groups on the Japan Hot 100. TWICE’s “Moonlight Sunrise” jumps 20-5, fueled by streaming (No. 5, up 127 percent from last week) and video (No. 2, up 12 percent). Rising five-member K-pop group NewJeans’s “Ditto” also breaks into the top 10 after crawling up the list these past several weeks (12→18→13→12→11→10). The track was powered by streaming, coming in at No. 4 for the metric.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, audio streams, radio airplay, YouTube and GYAO! video views and karaoke data.

He originally scheduled two back-to-back dates at the Inglewood venue for his After Hours Til Dawn Tour in September, but The Weeknd canceled his second show in the beginning of his set after he lost his voice. Greta Thunberg’s Punching Bag Andrew Tate Denied Bail By Romanian Appeals Court

A Romanian appeals court has hit alt-right clown Andrew Tate with some bad news.

Call it a bad case of karma, but immediately after he tried to come for Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter, he not only got dunked on by the teen, he was arrested in Romania on December 29.

A Romanian appeals court will not allow him to be released on bail, so he will continue sitting in a jail cell.

Per Raw Story:

A Romanian appeals court rejected Wednesday a new bail request by Andrew Tate, the controversial influencer being investigated along with his brother for alleged human trafficking and rape.

A Bucharest court on January 21 had extended the two men’s detention for 30 days as the inquiry proceeds into alleged coercement of women into prostitution as part of an organized criminal gang.

Tate, 36, and his brother Tristan, 34, have denied the charges since their arrest in late December.

“Ask them for evidence and they will give you none. Because it doesn’t exist. You’ll find out the truth of this case soon,” Andrew Tate told journalists as he was escorted from the appeals court.

Tina Glandian, Tates’ American attorney, claims it’s a direct violation of the two men’s rights to be held in jail without any charges being filed.

Tate and his brother, Tristan, moved to Romania several years ago, and Tristan just had a baby. She also told the press at a news conference that she doesn’t “believe they are a flight risk.”

“They’ve known since April that there’s an investigation, and if they intended to flee… they could have left Romania. They have not, they have ties here to the country,” she continued.

Life Came At Andrew Tate Very Fast

Tate, his brother, and two other Romanian men were thrown in jail for alleged trafficking, recruiting, and exploiting women and forcing them to do”pornographic acts with a view to producing and disseminating such material.”

Properties connected to Tate and his brother were the subject of raids by Romanian police with many of his assets, including his collection of 15 luxury vehicles he bragged about, 14 watches, and different “sums of money” in other currencies seized by authorities.

When you Google the term “life comes at you fast,” a picture of Andrew Tate and his brother should be under it.

Second shows have been added in Toronto on July 9, Chicago on July 23, East Rutherford on July 30, Washington, DC on August 6, Atlanta on August 12, Los Angeles on September 3 and Houston on September 24.

According to a press release from Live Nation, fan demand has already exceeded the number of available tickets by more than 800% based on current registration numbers. However, even with these added dates, “it is still expected that the majority of interested fans will not be able to get tickets because demand drastically exceeds supply.”

The 48-show global trek will launch in Stockholm on May 10 and feature a mix of stadium and arena shows across Europe through June 27 before picking up in North America at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on July 8; that leg is currently slated to run through a Sept. 27 gig at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Ticket sales for the Live Nation-promoted tour — produced by Parkwood Entertainment — will kick off with a TM Verified Fan Registration for the North American dates, which is open now and closes at different times based on the city (click here for details on Verified fan and on-sale dates for European shows.) There will also be a Citi presale using Verified Fan as well as a Verizon Up presale.

Vinyl Growth Slows — But Is That Bad?

In 2020, after years of steady growth, the vinyl market exploded. Sales climbed over 46% in the United States, according to Luminate. Then, remarkably, they jumped another 51% in 2021.

But in 2022, that growth plummeted to a rate that was far more pedestrian: Luminate reported that sales were up a little more than 4%. (Pull two juggernauts — Taylor Swift‘s Midnights and Harry StylesHarry’s House — out of that number, and growth was less than 1%.) Year-over-year growth also fell in the United Kingdom from 23.2% to 2.9%, according to the British Phonographic Industry.

“Some labels report sales are down,” says Nick Gordon, chief partnership officer at Symphonic Distribution. And big retailers like Walmart offered some titles at a heavily discounted price around the holiday season, stoking fears among the smaller players that those stores had overbought — maybe an indication of slackening demand.

Despite these figures, Gordon believes the vinyl market remains “healthy.” And several of his peers — from distributors to indie-label heads, chain stores to independent retailers — also seem unruffled by the slower growth. “It corrected the market,” says Todd Oenbrink, sales director for All Media Supply, a Florida-based indie wholesaler.

“It feels like a welcomed return to normalcy,” agrees Terry Cole, founder and owner of Loveland, Ohio-based store Plaid Room Records and the label Colemine Records. “It feels way healthier. This industry is not set up for rapid growth.”

And according to Russ Krupnick, managing partner of the market research company MusicWatch, “core metrics” in the vinyl market are still “showing strength.” “Our initial look at the data from 2022 is indicating that the number of vinyl buyers is still holding up,” he continues. “And in early projections, it looks like the used vinyl market is going to be up by double digits.”

During the first two years of the pandemic, demand for vinyl grew like crazy, outpacing production capacity. But retailers, distributors and manufacturers consider those two years an aberration — from 2015 to 2019, year-over-year growth ranged from around 9% to 17%.

When few music fans were going to shows due to COVID-19, “vinyl took a far greater share of music fan spending than it would otherwise take,” says Stephen Godfroy, director and co-owner of Rough Trade, which saw 30% growth in vinyl sales in 2022. “We saw exuberance for all sorts of things during the peak COVID era — vinyl, Netflix, cooking lessons, home improvement,” Krupnick notes.

Now listeners “are spending money on other things — going out drinking, going out eating, going to gigs — whereas they couldn’t do that much in lockdown,” says Peter Quicke, chair of independent label Ninja Tune. (Vinyl sales for Ninja Tune rose over 25% in 2022.) Even so, vinyl sales still grew.

With higher prices for raw materials and labor, the cost of records has also increased, another potential growth dampener. Several independent store owners expect major-label prices to increase again in 2023. “We keep hearing there are more [price hikes] to come,” says John Kunz, owner of Waterloo Records in Austin. “I wonder how that 10- or 20-something shopper is going to be able to afford that.”

Price sensitivity, especially in an uncertain macroeconomic climate, is a chief worry in the independent record store owner and label community. Already “we see customers backing away from the high prices for new releases,” says Michael Kurtz, co-founder of Record Store Day.

But at the same time, the vinyl industry’s production capacity is expected to rise in 2023. Slower growth last year “was less about people suddenly not wanting to buy as many records and more about the amount of records available to purchase,” says Cameron Schaefer, CEO of Vinyl Me, Please. (VMP sales were up 15% in 2022.) “The biggest limiter on growth is just pressing.” “We could have sold much more vinyl in 2022 if only we could have gotten hold of more supply of the right product,” Godfroy agrees.

Independent labels are still struggling with long turnaround times, executives say, which leads to missed sales for their artists — especially when an album doesn’t hit stores and streaming services at the same time. But more plants are coming online — Vinyl Me, Please expects to have its own new plant operational this year, for example — and existing facilities are adding capacity.

There are other potentially positive signs. Krupnick published a study on “the vinyl revolution” in 2022 which found that the most common barrier to buying records was “I don’t have or want to buy a turntable;” similarly, Luminate’s year-end report noted that only 50% of vinyl buyers have a record player. But “when Harry Styles came out last year, we saw a spike in turntable sales,” says Crissi Bariatti, music buyer at Barnes & Noble. “We are converting a lot of new vinyl fans” who might purchase LPs for years to come. (The chain had an “amazing December” for vinyl sales, and “January numbers are great” as well.)

Fluctuation in growth isn’t uncommon, of course. “Ebb and flow in vinyl sales over short periods” is natural, according to Scott Hagen, CEO of Victrola, a product of “what the new releases are, what the availability is in that moment in time, and what the general traffic in retail is.” (That was down in the fourth quarter of 2022.) Schaefer from Vinyl Me, Please predicts that “the next two years will give a much better preview of what to expect from the vinyl industry in the long term.”

“People got excited by high numbers in the years prior,” he continues. “If we can get to 10% a year, stay there and do that well? That’s healthy.”
