LeBron James Now NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer, Surpasses Kareem Abdul-Jabbar #ScoringKing

LeBron James #6 of the Los Angeles Lakers sets the All time scoring record.

LeBron James and his still-ongoing career are the stuff of legend despite the heavy criticism he continues to endure from pundits and couch potatoes alike. The Ohio native and future Hall of Famer became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer Tuesday night (Feb. 7), surpassing the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

LeBron James, 38, broke the all-time scoring record during a contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder lead by the explosive young core of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, and Jalen Williams. The Lakers hosted the Thunder and the game was largely competitive throughout with James leading all scorers with 38 points.

The moment occurred in the third quarter and while it wasn’t some fancy shot from the corner or a thunderous dunk, it was a sweet 14-foot fadeaway jumper that sealed the moment for King James.  In a classy move, Abdul-Jabbar, one of the most beloved Lakers players of all time, congratulated James mid-court with NBA commissioner Adam Silver flanking him.

James allowed himself to crack emotionally if just for a moment, breaking a record that many thought would never get eclipsed, and has existed for four decades, almost as old as James is. The chants of MVP from the crowd were justified as well, as James continues to play at a very high level at an age when most players are already long retired or on the way out of the league.

The Western Conference is highly competitive this season and while the Lakers are in 13th place, they’re just two games from contending for the play-in game and a late-season run could be possible. That said, there are a lot of games left in the 2022-23 season so it’s anyone’s ballgame.

For now, let’s congratulate the Scoring King, LeBron James, on this historic moment. Keep scrolling to see reactions from some of James’ peers and others on social media.

Zach Bryan Signs Publishing Deal With Warner Chappell Music

Zach Bryan, whose “Something In The Orange” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts, has signed a worldwide publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. Warner Chappell declined to disclose terms of the deal.

Bryan, who is signed to Warner Records, has broken through as one of the brightest new artists of the past few years, including being named Billboard’s Top New Country Artist of 2022.

Los Angeles-based David Goldsen, WCM head of A&R, Australia and vp of creative, signed Bryan. “Zach is a truly generational songwriter and that was obvious from the first time I heard his music. Those songs then, along with countless more since, resonate with everyone who hears them. He’s a natural storyteller with an innate ability to write songs that are unapologetically raw and vulnerable. In a short amount of time, he’s captivated fans of all music, and we’re beyond lucky and thrilled to work with him.”

Goldsen began courting Bryan some time ago. “I’d like to personally thank David and the team over at Warner Chappell. I was just a confused kid in the Navy four years ago and they were the first people I talked to in the industry, literally,” Bryan said in a statement. “They never pushed a four-man writing team on me, they never asked me to do anything I didn’t want to do, they just believed in me. I owe them more than just support, I owe them back the faith they had in me as a barely 23-year-old Oklahoma kid walking around New York like a sore thumb.”

Bryan’s major-label debut, American Heartbreak, came out in May with Bryan penning all 34 songs by himself. It debuted atop Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and hit No. 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. According to Warner Chappell, he has surpassed one billion global streams.

“Zach has already had a record-breaking start to his career and there’s so much more to come,” said Warner Chappell Music president of North America Ryan Press. “He isn’t afraid to do things differently, and it’s been incredible to see him become such a positive force in the industry and reshape how singer/songwriters release music. This is a huge moment, and we’re very proud to be on this journey together as he continues to carve out his own path.”

Bryan’s Burn Burn Burn North American Tour kicks off May 10 at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.

Rihanna, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Snoop and Lil Wayne Congratulate LeBron James on NBA Scoring Record

A king deserves a royal court. Which is why on Tuesday night (Feb. 7), a galaxy of stars congratulated basketball legend LeBron James for becoming NBA’s all-time scoring leader when he broke Kareem-Abdul Jabbar’s three decade-long record. During a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Los Angeles Lakers’ home Crypto.com Arena, James passed Jabbar’s career total of 38,387 points after weeks of breathless anticipation of his crowning achievement and everyone from Rihanna to Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars gave him his props.

As soon as the dust settled — and Jabbar ceremonially handed over a basketball to the new scoring champ in a touching mid-court ceremony after LeBron scored his 36th point of the night on a step-back jumper — some of James’ biggest admirers took to social media to congratulate him on his epic feat.

In a compilation video from the NBA, Kendrick gave the new scoring sire high praise, saying, “From the time you went to the league when you had the doubters and the naysayers and people that think you wouldn’t take it this far you proved ’em wrong, dawg.” Upcoming Super Bowl LVII halftime performer Rihanna added, “I am so grateful to witness this moment in history… my favorite thing about being a LeBron James fan is just watching you prove yourself over and over again against all odds and all doubt. Thank you for repping for all of us. Keep striving for greatness always, and congratulations King James.”

Snoop Dogg modeled his Lakers jersey and said, “it’s always fun watching a Laker get it done.”

Drake called it a “legendary night in NBA history” in a video in which he appeared to be standing on a ball court in James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio. “To honor that I had to come back to the place that it all started… Every journey has its beginning,” Drizzy said as a green screen collapsed behind him, revealing that he was actually in a nightclub in Miami.

John Legend tweeted, “Congratulations @KingJames!!!! This man has been in the spotlight and burdened with the highest expectations since he was a teenager. And he’s done nothing but exceed those expectations and build a historic legacy. What an incredible accomplishment!,” while Bruno Mars offered up a champagne bottle emoji.

Timberlake tossed a GOAT emoji into a tweet in which he marveled, “on a step back too!,” while Wayne wrote, “Kongrats King!! Glad to say I’ve shaken your hand brudda. God bless you and the fam and the homies.”

XXXTentacion Family Friend Breaks Down on First Day of Murder Trial Describing Deadly Ambush By Masked Men

A family friend of the rapper XXXTentacion broke down Tuesday (Feb. 7) as he told jurors how he and the rapper were ambushed by armed robbers as they drove away from a motorcycle shop, how he fled in fear and then heard the gunshots that killed the rising star.

Leonard Kerr’s testimony highlighted the opening day in the trial of three men accused of fatally shooting XXXTentacion on June 18, 2018, inside his BMW sports car, which had been blocked by an SUV as Kerr and the rapper pulled out of the Riva Motorsports’ parking lot near Fort Lauderdale.

Two men jumped out with guns, Kerr said. He said the taller man pointed his weapon at him and told him not to get out of the car, punctuating his command with a curse word. The other man was trying to pull the rapper’s gold chain from his neck. Kerr said he could hear XXXTentacion asking, “What’s this for?” At that point, Kerr said, he decided to escape, pushing the button that opened the passenger door.

“If I run, I can get shot, but I can live. If I sit….” Kerr said, his voicing trailing off until he stopped to regain his composure.

Kerr said when he looked back, the taller man was pointing his gun at XXXTentacion, and he said he heard at least two loud bangs. The men then got back into the SUV and sped off, taking with them the $50,000 the rapper had in his designer bag.

Michael Boatwright, 28, is accused of being the shooter, while his friend, Trayon Newsome, 24, is accused of being the other gunman. Dedrick Williams, 26, is accused of being the driver. They could all receive life sentences if convicted of first-degree murder. A fourth man who prosecutors say was in the SUV, 26-year-old Robert Allen, pleaded guilty last year to second-degree murder and is set to testify against his former friends.

During opening statements earlier Tuesday, the jurors heard divergent theories about the shooting. A robbery gone awry, according to prosecutors. According to the defense, it could have been a feud between XXXTentacion and the megastar Drake, but they say detectives refused to investigate that possibility.

Prosecutor Pascale Achille told jurors that Boatwright, Newsome, Williams and Allen, set out that day to commit armed robberies. Allen and Williams went inside the motorcycle shop to buy masks, she said.

There, they happened upon XXXTentacion, who, according to Kerr, had the $50,000 he had just gotten from the bank hanging out of his bag. The pair recognized him, and the group seized upon the opportunity, deciding to rob him as he left, Achille said. Boatwright shot him several times “without any provocation,” she said.

To varying degrees, the defendants are linked to the shooting by surveillance video and cellphone locations, and all are implicated through Allen’s expected testimony, Achille said. Then there are the social media photos of some of the men flashing the money posted that night, she said.

“They go on social media and start bragging that they have this influx of cash,” Achille said. “They flash it like it’s Christmas Day.”

To the men’s attorneys, the defendants are victims of Robert Allen’s lies and the failure of detectives to investigate XXXTentacion’s feud with Drake — XXXTentacion once said on social media that if he ever wound up dead, the Canadian rapper would be the cause. He later retracted that. Another rapper had also made threats against XXXTentacion.

They said that with the rapper’s slaying coming just four months after the slaying of 17 people at nearby Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, the Broward Sheriff’s Office was under extreme political pressure to solve the case quickly.

“For Broward County, for everyone involved, this was a nightmare,” said Mauricio Padilla, Williams’ attorney.

That’s why they wanted no part with investigating a celebrity, he said.

Prosecutors say there is no evidence linking Drake to the shooting, and Williams is clearly seen in the store’s surveillance video, recognizable through his distinctive facial tattoos. He was also identified by one of the clerks. Padilla conceded Williams was present in the store but didn’t say how he would explain that.

Joseph Kimok, Boatwright’s attorney, also pointed the finger at a third man as the possible shooter — a friend Williams was seen talking to inside the motorcycle store just before the shooting who has the same build as his client. He alluded that the friend could have gotten into the SUV Williams was driving outside the view of surveillance cameras. He said the evidence will show that Boatwright was asleep at the home he shared with his grandmother at the time of the shooting.

“At no point (in the surveillance videos) will you see Mr. Boatwright, because he wasn’t there,” Kimok said.

Yes, a cellphone linked to him was near the store — but that was a community phone used by several men, he said. And yes, he “very stupidly posed” with money that night — but that money was Allen’s, not Boatwright’s, Kimok said.

Newsome’s attorney also denied that his client was present.

The victim (born Jahseh Onfroy) was a platinum-selling rising star who tackled issues including prejudice and depression in his songs. He also drew criticism over bad behavior and multiple arrests, including charges that he severely beat and abused his girlfriend.

TikTok’s SoundOn Launches In Australia

BRISBANE, Australia — TikTok launches SoundOn in Australia, a tool that allows creators to upload their music directly, and get paid.

The new platform helps independent emerging artists navigate its service, upload music and get paid for its use, market and promote themselves on TikTok and distribute their music to outside DSPs.

SoundOn initially went live in Brazil and Indonesia in early 2022, then went out in the U.S. and U.K., also last year, before arriving this week for Australian users.

With SoundOn, TikTok becomes a music distributor, with a service that allows its users to upload their music to the likes of Spotify or Apple Music, in partnership with a third-party distributor.

Free to join in Australia, SoundOn promises to pay 100% of royalties to music creators in the first year, and offers help and advice from a dedicated, locally-based made up of a roster of homegrown music industry veterans, in addition to “TikTok music experts.”

SoundOn “can also distribute to other music platforms,” reads a statement, without identifying which streaming services or DSPs are currently on board.

The new offering at us.soundon.global or soundon.global opens for business in Australia with signings including Ashwarya, Aleksiah, The Drax Project, Roy Bing, Suzi Sings, Xanu, Kate Gill, Mikalya Pasterfield and CXLOE.

TikTok is a real hit with Gen Z in Australia, and is already a more popular social platform than Twitter among all internet users in these parts, according to data published in the Digital 2022 Australia report.

In separate news, TikTok confirms it is “running a test” in Australia over the coming weeks to analyze “how music is accessed and used on the platform.”

The results of those tests, observers say, could empower TikTok when the time comes to negotiate with its major label content partners on new terms.

“Not all music is included in this test and we do not expect it to impact everyone on TikTok,” reads a statement from the ByteDance-owned business. “While the test is underway, we expect that some of our users will not be able to access our full music and sounds library. For more than half of our community there will be no change to their experience and the test will not impact them.”

Ed Sheeran Played an Impromptu Gig at Hobbiton In New Zealand

With his stout heart and love of an ale or two, Ed Sheeran fit right in when he played an impromptu gig at Hobbiton.

The English singer and songwriter made a detour from his current tour of New Zealand for a visit to Hobbiton, the outdoor movie set that appears in Peter Jackson’s legendary Lord of the Rings films and its Hobbit prequels.

In a clip doing the rounds of TikTok, Sheeran swung a guitar at the final stop of the LOTR tour, the Green Dragon Inn, for a performance of his 2013 single “I See Fire,” the soundtrack to Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

“We had an unexpected guest at The Green Dragon Inn tonight,” notes the tour guides, which host thousands of guests each year at the set in Waikato on New Zealand’s north Island, a spot known to millions as the home village of Frodo, Samwise and scores of nuggety halflings.

The surprises didn’t stop there. Sheeran stopped by Kōwhai Intermediate and Manurewa Intermediate schools in Auckland for surprise performances, footage of which can be seen here.

Sheeran completes the New Zealand leg of + – = ÷ x Tour (pronounced “The Mathematics Tour”) on Saturday (Feb. 11) at Eden Park, Auckland. He then heads west for his Australian stadium tour, also produced by Frontier Touring and kicking off next Friday, Feb. 17 at Suncorp Stadium.

The Brit is a touring juggernaut in these parts. With his 2017 Divide tour of Australia, Sheeran sold upwards of 1 million tickets, breaking the all-time record for a single tour set by Dire Straits in the 1980s. His latest tour of these parts is slated to wrap March 12 at Optus Stadium, Perth.

Ice-T Finds Humor In Grammy Award Attendee Drooling At Coco

Ice-T and his voluptuously wife attended the recent Grammy Awards but it seemed that an onlooker was the one who was in love with the Coco.

As per Page Six the Rap legend was in the house for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. While the celebrity couple seemed to thoroughly enjoy all the festivities it was an off camera moment that truly tickled Ice Oscillator. While watching one of the performances the wife and husband looked on and so did another attendee. An unidentified gentleman sitting to the left of them was clearly stunned by Coco’s unique physique. So much so he did a double take when he really got a good glance at her.

The moment was caught on camera and eventually landed on the “Power” rapper’s radar. He reposted the clip to his social media channels. “Lol… I love how the white dude looked at me then took time to check Coco out,” the Law & Order: SVU star wrote. “I TOTALLY understand” he added. The post was pure comedy and several of his Rap peers, including Busta rhymes, left laughing emojis in the comments section. Some of his other followers claimed they weren’t surprised either and compliment on how stunning she looked.

Ice-T not only attended but he also participated in the historic tribute to Hip-Hop. Initially he declined the offer from Q-Questlove but ultimately was convinced when The Roots member told him “[He said], ‘You don’t want to be sitting at home watching this show, saying you should’ve been there,’”. You can watch the performance below.

#BRUHNews: Russian Man Mauled To Death By Camel He Punched

HipHopWired Featured Video

Maybe it’s time human beings learn to treat animals well—especially when they’re bigger and stronger, and are more than capable of killing us.

Unfortunately, a man in Russia has recently learned this lesson the hard and fatal way. Even more unfortunate is the fact that the animal he appeared to abuse suffered an equal fate—albeit one that was likely far less painful.

A disturbing video is currently circling the interwebs that shows a camel trampling a man to death at a children’s camp in Russia after the man had punched it.

From the New York Post:

“The animal did not appreciate such treatment,” local media reported regarding the deadly incident, which occurred last month at the Beryozka recreation centre in Omsk, Siberia, per East2West news.

The fiasco occurred after a watchman named Yury, 51, struck the dromedary while attempting to move it, causing it to become enraged and attack him, local media reported.

In the disturbing footage, the guard can be seen walking up to the double-humped Bactrian camel — which can weigh over 1,100 pounds — and yanking on its reins. However, the animal, named Vasya, refuses to budge, after which Yuri punches him in the face. He then tries to get the camel to move a second time, whereupon Vasya wheels around and grabs his assailant with his teeth, then flings him around like a ragdoll.

After getting mauled and trampled for a protracted period, the guard can be seen lying motionless in the now-blood-stained snow while the camel continues to prod at him.

The man sustained severe injuries to his head and body and he died after being rushed to a hospital. The Post noted that “prior to the attack, the animal had reportedly been described as peaceful and was often around children sans incident,” which indicates that, like many animals, he wouldn’t attack anyone who didn’t attack him first. (If “don’t start nothin’, won’t be nothin’” was an animal, basically.) But, sadly, that didn’t change the decision to put the camel down rather than risk another human being killed, which is often the case when people put themselves in a position of danger with an animal that was minding its own business.

Meanwhile, the Post reported that law enforcement is currently investigating the camp to determine if the camel was being held legally and properly.

So, yeah—maybe just leave these animals alone.

No Surprises Here: 150 NYC Cops Involved In Misconduct Responding To George Floyd’s Death

Daily Life In New York City Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

It seems Mayor Eric Adams has some more work to do. It has been reported over 150 New York City police offers have been involved in misconduct responding to George Floyd’s passing.

As spotted on The Grio the New York Police Department could have responded better to the tragic killing of that turned the world upside down. According to the Civilian Complaint Review Board, or “CCRB”, over 600 complaints were received when the Big Apple collectively protested police brutality. On Monday, February 6 the organization released their findings via The 2020 Protest Report. Their investigation found that 150 badges were guilty of misconduct during the uproar including excessive force.

On May 30, 2020 multiple protestors were knocked over by a police vehicle. Another lawman reportedly pulled another protestor’s COVID-19 mask down and pepper sprayed them in the face. That same day a different set of offices tackled protestors and hit them over the head with batons. It was also confirmed others used physical force, such as pushes and shoves, against civilians in violation of NYPD Guidelines, abused their authority against members of the press and civilians who were not involved in protests and failed to provide medical attention to injured civilians.

The CCRB also faced multiple hurdles when investigating these complaints, many of which led to complaints being closed as “Officer Unidentified” because the CCRB could not determine which officers were involved in the alleged misconduct. Chief among these challenges were:

  • (1) the actions NYPD members took to conceal their identities, which prevented them from being identified by complainants, victims, and witnesses.
  • (2) the NYPD’s failure to track and document where officers, vehicles, and equipment were deployed.
  • (3) the NYPD’s failure to provide dispositive responses to requests for footage from BWCs and other NYPD-controlled cameras that resulted in delayed responses, false positives, false negatives, and inconsistent responses.
  • (4) investigative delays resulting from officers refusing to be interviewed remotely.
The Civilian Complaint Review Board is an independent oversight agency that investigates, mediates and prosecutes complaints of NYPD misconduct. You can read The 2020 Protest Report here
