Hot 100 First-Timers: Junior H & Oscar Maydon Debut With ‘Fin de Semana’

Junior H and Oscar Maydon each score their first career entry on the Billboard Hot 100, as their team-up “Fin de Semana” opens at No. 86 on the chart dated Feb. 11.

The song, released via Rancho Humilde, debuts almost entirely on the strength of its streaming sum: 5.6 million U.S. streams (up 11%) in the Jan. 27-Feb. 2-dated tracking week, according to Luminate.

The song concurrently climbs 12-10 on Hot Latin Songs, becoming the first top 10 hit for each artist.

TikTok has been a significant factor in the song’s growing profile, as a portion of the track’s audio has been used in nearly 100,000 clips on the platform. (TikTok does not presently contribute directly to Billboard’s charts.)

Junior H (born Antonio Herrera Perez), is relatively new to Billboard’s charts. The singer-songwriter, from Guanajuato, Mexico, first landed on a Billboard survey in November 2019, thanks to his featured credit on Natanael Cano’s “Ella.” The single reached No. 29 on Hot Latin Songs in February 2020.

Since then, Junior H, 23, has charted 10 additional Hot Latin Songs hits, including eight collaborations, with acts including Eslabon Armado, Luis R Conriquez and Marca Registrada.

Junior H has also sent two albums onto the all-genre Billboard 200 chart: $ad Boyz 4 Life (No. 192 peak in 2021) and Mi Vida En Un Cigarro 2 (No. 138, 2022). Both sets also hit No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Albums chart, as did his 2020 collection Cruisin’ With Junior H. He also reached the chart’s top five with Atrapado En Un Sueno (No. 2) and Musica <3>(No. 3), both in 2020.

As for Maydon, “Fin de Semana” became the Mexican singer’s first Billboard chart entry upon its debut in January. He’s since charted one additional song: “Los Collarees,” with El Padrinito Toys, debuted at No. 49 on Hot Latin Songs (Feb. 11) and rises to No. 44 on the latest ranking.

Maydon also enters at No. 44 on the latest Emerging Artists chart.

Bonnie Raitt’s ‘Just Like That’ Up 6,700% in Streams After Song of the Year Grammy Win

Few Grammy watchers expected Bonnie Raitt to take home song of the year at Sunday’s (Feb. 5) awards — perhaps least of all Raitt herself, as judged by her heavily memed surprised reaction to the announcement — for the devastating, self-penned title track to her 2022 album Just Like That. The song was easily the least commercially visible of the 10 tracks nominated, the other nine of which were all top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. (Raitt has not reached the Hot 100 since 1995.)

That lack of commercial profile for “Just Like That” to that point, however, has just meant that there’s plenty of curious listeners now intrigued enough by the song’s big Grammy win to check it out for the first time. The song absolutely blasted off on streaming services following its song of the year victory, spiking from just over 10,000 daily official on-demand U.S. streams two days before the Grammys (Feb. 3) to a whopping 697,000 the Monday after (Feb. 6) — a gain of around 6,700%, according to Luminate.

And the growth in the song’s sales is even more explosive. After selling a negligible daily number in the days leading up to the Grammys, the song moved 4,550 copies on Feb. 6, a gain of over 10,000%. (The song has spent most of the week at No. 2 on the iTunes real-time sales charts, behind only Miley Cyrus’ Hot 100-topping “Flowers.”) Raitt’s non-“Just” catalog also saw big streaming increases, with the rest of her discography up from 333,000 official on-demand U.S. streams on Feb. 3 to 869,000 on Feb. 6, a gain of 161%.

It’s not the first time a big Grammy moment has given Raitt a major sales boost. After her mid-career breakthrough set Nick of Time took home album of the year at the 1990 awards, it took off on the Billboard 200 — eventually topping the chart for three weeks that April, and starting a commercial renaissance for the veteran blues-rocker that lasted through the first half of the ’90s. Just Like That still has a long way to go before marking that kind of chart comeback for Raitt, but it may be on track to crack the Billboard 200 again next week (dated Feb. 18) — which would be the LP’s first appearance on the chart since it debuted at No. 44 there last May, falling off the week after.

On Instagram, Bey posted a carousel of photos in a royal purple, three-piece set consisting of a bra top, wide-leg cargo pants and a floor grazing, semi-sheer jacket to match. To tie into the Park Trail theme, the bra and cargo pants are accented with orange straps and waist ties that resemble hiking chords.

“My favorite drop to date,” the “Break My Soul” singer captioned the photos. “Check out the full PARK TRAIL collection, available 2/9/23.”

Ivy Park first unveiled plans for Park Trail on Jan. 20 through a trailer that featured models in pieces from the collection. The items included camouflage motifs, puffer jackets, a fashionable take on hiking shoes and more. Devon Aoki, Ice Spice, Offset and his son Kody Cephus were among the drop’s models.

Though fans are loving the idea of the Park Trail collection, several Instagram users commented on Bey’s post that they are also trying to use their money to score tickets to her highly anticipated Renaissance World Tour. “Beyoncé we are on Ticketmaster fighting for our lives!!!!” one user wrote, while another joked, “Right after announcing the tour? In this economy??? JAIL. HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!”

Jelly Roll Breaks Record for Most Weeks Spent at No. 1 on Emerging Artists Chart

Jelly Roll makes history on Billboard’s latest Emerging Artists chart (dated Feb. 11) as he scores a record-breaking 25th week at No. 1.

He surpasses the 24-week reign of NLE Choppa in 2019-20 to set a new mark for the most time spent at No. 1 in the chart’s seven-year history.

Jelly Roll (aka Jason DeFord) continues his command as his latest chart hit, “Need a Favor,” ranks at No. 33 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (after reaching No. 25) and No. 42 on Hot Country Songs (its peak). It also rises 46-43 on Country Airplay.

Jelly Roll’s No. 1 run has also been powered by his songs “Son of a Sinner,” “Dead Man Walking,” “She” and “Son of the Dirty South.” The first two are from his LP Ballads of the Broken, which in September became his third entry on the Billboard 200.

“Son of a Sinner” topped the Country Airplay chart dated Jan. 14. “There is no greater reward for a singer and songwriter in Nashville, Tenn., than to have the No. 1 song on country radio,” Jelly Roll, 38, said of the coronation of the song, which he co-penned. “Now imagine that happening to a guy that grew up in this town … a guy that at every turn for the first 25 years of his life made the wrong decision. Imagine everyone telling that guy he had no chance at country radio. If you can imagine that, then you can understand why I’m so filled with gratitude. Thank you to … every single person that helped make this dream come true.”

“Son of a Sinner” reached No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October. It became his first entry on the chart. (Artists “graduate” from Emerging Artists after reaching the top 25 of either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, among other qualifiers; see below.)

Rounding out the top five of the Emerging Artists chart, Coi Leray climbs 5-2, NewJeans hold at No. 3, Nate Smith keeps at No. 4 and d4vd rises 6-5.

The Backseat Lovers re-enter Emerging Artists at No. 8, a new high, as the group’s reissued 2019 LP When We Were Friends arrives at No. 23 on Alternative Albums, and No. 199 on the Billboard 200, with 7,000 equivalent album units earned, according to Luminate. It also opens at No. 5 on Vinyl Albums and No. 17 on Top Album Sales.

Plus, The Arcs, which include The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, debut at No. 9 on Emerging Artists, thanks to sophomore project Electrophonic Chronic. The set opens at No. 8 on Vinyl Albums and No. 12 on Top Album Sales, while its single “Eyez” rises 26-22 on Adult Alternative Airplay.

The Emerging Artists chart ranks the most popular developing artists of the week, using the same formula as the all-encompassing Billboard Artist 100, which measures artist activity across multiple Billboard charts, including the Hot 100, Billboard 200 and the Social 50. (The Artist 100 lists the most popular acts, overall, each week.) However, the Emerging Artists chart excludes acts that have notched a top 25 entry on either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, as well as artists that have achieved two or more top 10s on Billboard’s “Hot” song genre charts and/or consumption-based “Top” album genre rankings.

Cardi B Overheard Scolding Offset & Quavo At Grammys

The backstage dispute between Quavo and Offset at the Grammy Awards was halted apparently due to Cardi B stepping in, reportedly.

The “WAP” rapper had just gone backstage after presenting the award for Best Rap Album to Kendrick Lamar at the ceremony on Sunday night (Feb. 5th), when video cameras from Entertainment Tonight caught her scolding both members of the Migos group, Quavo, and Offset. “Both of y’all wrong. Both of y’all! This is not right,” she yelled before continuing: “No, b—-es, shut the f–k up. ’Cause you shouldn’t have been talking.” Cardi B is married to Offset, and the two share two children – their daughter Kulture and their son, Wave.

It was unclear whom the latter comments were directed towards, but it was later revealed that the two were having a heated argument ahead of the “In Memoriam” tribute segment of the show where their late colleague Takeoff would be honored. According to TMZ, both Offset and Quavo were asked to take part but Quavo refused to let Offset join him onstage. The two allegedly got into a scuffle and had to be separated.

Quavo would appear onstage shortly after to perform “Without You”, a song he wrote specifically for Takeoff, who was also his nephew. Offset is also related to the two, as a cousin. The absence of Offset led many watching to be a bit disappointed at the bad blood that still exists between the remaining Migos members. Offset would later deny that there was any altercation,

posting to Twitter: “What tf look like fighting my brother yal n—-s is crazy.”

The murder of Takeoff outside of a bowling alley in downtown Houston, Texas last November has been extremely hard on both Quavo and Offset. Offset has been vocal about his grief, saying that he’s been in a “dark place” since the tragic incident. Quavo, who was present at the time of the shooting, has also been publicly and privately mourning the loss. The alleged shooter, Patrick Xavier Clark, is set to stand trial for the incident on March 9th.

YNW Melly Takes Death Penalty Question to Florida Supreme Court

Lawyers for YNW Melly have launched an appeal to the Florida Supreme Court, asking the court to overturn a ruling last year that said the rapper could face the death penalty if convicted in his upcoming murder trial.

In an opening brief filed last month, Melly’s lawyers urged Florida’s top court to rule that prosecutors had forfeited the right to seek capital punishment. They say the government failed to give Melly and his attorneys proper notice that they planned to do so, violating strict procedural rules.

In making their argument to the state high court, the rapper’s lawyers said the justices should take the case because it raises issues of “great public importance” beyond Melly’s individual charges.

“Death penalty law is an area where it is in the clear interest of everyone — defendants, victims, lawyers, judges, etc. — to have precisely defined and easily understood rules,” Melly’s attorneys, Daniel Tibbitt and Philip R. Horowitz, wrote in the Jan. 27 brief.

Melly (real name Jamell Demons) has spent years awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges over  accusations that he and another YNW rapper shot and killed Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. in 2018.

A first-degree murder defendant in Florida would typically face the possibility of execution if convicted, but Melly’s attorneys argued in April that the state had failed to comply with strict laws on how they must warn defendants that they’ll seek the death penalty.

Florida requires prosecutors to give notice 45 days after arraignment if they plan to seek capital punishment. In Melly’s case, the state attorney filed such a notice when they originally indicted the rapper in 2019, but failed to do so when a so-called superseding indictment was handed down earlier this year.

In July, a trial judge sided with Melly’s attorneys and said prosecutors had forfeited the chance to seek death. But in November, an appeals court ruled the judge’s decision was incorrect. The court wrote that since prosecutors gave notice that they might seek death when they first charged Melly in 2019, they had complied with state rules: “Notice is notice.”

In taking the case to the Florida Supreme Court last month, Melly’s lawyers argued  the state rules “plainly require” new notice be filed when a new indictment is handed down.

“The Petitioner was arraigned on a new indictment, and the State did not file the requisite notice within 45 days of that arraignment (or ever),” the rapper’s lawyers wrote. “The State relies on a notice that was filed as to an original indictment that is, and has been since the filing of the new indictment, a legal nullity.”

An attorney for the state of Florida did not immediately return a request for comment. The state can file a response to the brief in the months ahead.

Snoop Dogg Reminds Everyone That He’s Never Won A Grammy

Over the decades he’s spent in the rap game, Snoop Dogg has earned himself all kinds of accolades and awards, but the Doggfather has a bone to pick with the Recording Academy as he’s never been the recipient of the highly-coveted Grammy Award.

A day after Beyoncé made history by taking home a record 29th Grammy Award, Snoop Dogg took to his Instagram account to point out the fact that though he’s dropped multiple classic songs and albums and has earned himself 20 Grammy Award nominations, he’s never taken a single golden trophy home. Posting the names of a few rap artists who’ve won multiple Grammy’s, Snoop wrote in the caption “Snoop dogg. 20 nominations. 0 wins. ?????.”

It is lowkey bewildering that Snoop’s never taken home a single Grammy given his prolific run in which he’s dropped bangers such as “What’s My Name,” “Beautiful,” “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” and “Sexual Eruption.”

Still, the Recording Academy never blessed him with a single win. Even being besties with Martha Stewart didn’t seem to sway them in his direction. Still, regardless of how he feels about constantly being snubbed by the Academy, Snoop Dogg did partake in the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective event in honor of Dr. Dre. and others and performed at the pre-Grammy ceremony. So he can’t be that mad at them.

Doja Cat is an artist who marches to the beat of her own drum and that often invites unwelcomed comments on her appearance, music, and social media personality. Instead of pushing back on a silly rumor that she’s a member of the so-called Illuminati, the talented artist is leaning into it.

Doja Cat is routinely the topic of conversation on social media given the fact she’s very active on her pages and engages with fans, which often ends up getting weird because many people lack all manner of decorum and couth online these days. Like many a famous star before her, Doja was bestowed with the assumption of being part of some secret powerful organization that is apparently controlling the minds of the masses, or whatever YouTube Unversity likes to drone on about.

“This illuminati sh*t is so funny to me I’m gonna keep doing deliberate weird ass sh*t just to make those people uncomfortable. I’ve fr found a new outlet of joy,” Doja tweeted on Monday (Feb. 6). She added, “playing with people’s ignorance and stupidity for my own happiness and personal gain >.”

When a fan says she should tattoo the Illuminati symbol on herself, Doja seemed to honor the idea.

21 Savage, Janelle Monae, Kane Brown & More to Play in the 2023 Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

The 2023 NBA season is approaching its halfway mark, which means All-Star festivities are right around the corner. Billboard can exclusively report today (Feb. 8) that 21 Savage, Janelle Monae, Cordae, Ozuna, Nicky Jam, Kane Brown and more will participate in the 2023 Ruffles NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.

Set to take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Feb. 17, two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brothers Thanasis and Alex Antetokounmpo and Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn will serve as coaches and go against Houston Astros star Alex Bregman at this year’s event. Team captains will include Utah Jazz Governor Ryan Smith and Three-Time NBA Champion Dwyane Wade. 

In previous years, the NBA has reeled in a bevy of musical talents to play at its celebrity game, including J. Cole, Jack Harlow, Common and Quavo. The Migos frontman dazzled in both of his appearances. In 2018, he scored 19 points and won the MVP award. The following year, he had a game-high of 27 points. Last year, the NBA recruited DJ Khaled to perform at the halftime show, and he brought out Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Migos, Lil Baby and Gunna. The NBA hasn’t yet announced its performers for this year’s game. 

For fans interested in watching the Celebrity Game, it begins at 7 p.m. ET, and will air exclusively on ESPN. It will also be available to stream on the ESPN App.

Jonas Brothers Reflect on Their 2013 Split: ‘We All Really Needed That Time’

The Jonas Brothers look back on their 2013 breakup in a new interview with IMPACT x Nightline, and Billboard has an exclusive first look at the sit-down.

Admitting that the rift between himself and his brothers reached a point where they were communicating solely through their father, Joe Jonas now sees that their time apart was necessary in the long run. “We needed it creatively,” he told ABC News and Nightline‘s Juju Chang as Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas nodded along on either side of him. “We needed it emotionally … probably therapy.”

“We didn’t want the band to end when it did,” added Kevin, “but we all really needed that time. The Band-Aid had needed to be ripped off.”

However, Joe also pointed out that, at the end of the day, the primary concern of Paul Jonas Sr. was never the band or his sons’ status as hit-making superstars. “Just like any parent would want, you want your kids to just get along,” he said.

It’s a sentiment each member of the JoBros most likely understands now that they’ve all become fathers in recent years. While Kevin’s girls — Valentina and Alena — with wife Danielle Jonas are now 9 and 6, respectively, Nick’s daughter with wife Priyanka Chopra, baby Malti, just rang in her first birthday. Meanwhile, Joe has two girls of his own with wife Sophie Turner. Older daughter Willa was born in July 2020, but the couple has yet to publicly reveal their younger daughter’s name or face.

Since the band got back together in 2019, they’ve landed their first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Sucker,” and just received their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During the Jan. 30 ceremony, the brothers announced their upcoming sixth studio set, The Album, which will be released May 5 via Republic Records. The Jonas Brothers’ interview with IMPACT x Nightline will also include scenes from the recording studio where they worked on The Album, discussion of their evolution from pop stars to family men, and more.
