Label SM Entertainment Reports Strong Growth Amid HYBE Controversy

SM Entertainment’s revenue in 2022 grew 18.7% to 848.3 billion won ($657 million at the average 2022 exchange rate) in 2022, the Korean music company announced Monday. Gross profits rose 15.4% to 297.5 billion won ($230 million), operating profit fell 3.7% to 93.9 billion won ($73 million) and operating margin dropped from 13.6% to 11.1%.

The K-pop company’s roster includes NCT Dream, NCT 127, Aespa and Red Velvet. NCT Dream had the fourth most album sales of any artist in Korea in 2022 with 4.1 million units. Red Velvet was the No. 9 artist with 2.4 million units, NCT 127 was No. 11 with 2.2 million units and Aespa was No. 13 with 1.8 million units.

In the U.S., NCT Dream reached No. 39 on Billboard’s Artist 100 chart in April 2022, while the group’s album Glitch Mode peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard 200 album chart. NCT 127’s latest album, 2 Baddies, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in October.

Although SM Entertainment’s largest source of revenue, recorded music, declined 3.7% in 2022, gains in other parts of the business made up for the loss: Concerts jumped tenfold from a pandemic-led slowdown, licensing climbed 62.2% and appearances jumped 48.1%.

In the fourth quarter, SM Entertainment’s revenue rose 7.7% to 256.4 billion won ($188.6 million at the quarter’s average exchange rate). Operating profit rose 70.3% to 25.2 billion won ($18.5 million) and operating margin improved 9.8% from 6.8% in the prior-year period. Net profit fell 72.7% due in part to the sale of real estate in the fourth quarter of 2021 for 19.7 billion won ($14.5 million). The company also experience 7.5 billion won ($5.5 million) of foreign-currency-related loss in the quarter.

SM Entertainment’s earnings release arrived amidst a brewing controversy over an investment in the company by its largest competitor, HYBE. In a deal finalized on Feb. 22, SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo Man sold a majority of his shares to HYBE in what SM Entertainment CFO Jang Cheol-hkuk called a “hostile takeover” that will “undermin[e] the diversity of the K-pop market.”

SM Entertainment’s vision for the company includes Korean entertainment and tech company Kakao, which announced on Feb. 9 it would acquire a 9.1% stake in SM Entertainment. As SM Entertainment laid out in a presentation released Feb. 22, Kakao’s technological capabilities could help SM Entertainment build a stronger line-up and upgrade online fan platforms. Kakao owns the music streaming service Melon.

In an open letter posted on social media on Tuesday, HYBE CEO Park Jiwon argued that together the companies have an opportunity to reach more fans and “stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s major record labels.” HYBE believes it can help SM Entertainment artists in North America and prizes SM Entertainment’s infrastructure in China and Southeast Asia, regions where HYBE currently does little business.

‘White Lotus’ Star Haley Lu Richardson Reveals What the Cast Sings During Karaoke Nights

The characters of HBO’s The White Lotus might be a bit unhinged on the show, but off set, the stars behind them are down to have fun and partake in now-infamous karaoke sessions with each other. According to Haley Lu Richardson, who plays Portia in the anthology series’ second season, classic tracks from movie musical Grease and the Spice Girls are favorites, she revealed in a Tuesday (Feb. 21) interview with InStyle.

When asked about the cast’s karaoke hangout sessions, Richardson stated that she often stepped up to the mic for the sing-alongs. “I did a lot of Spice Girls. I did duet songs from Grease with Adam [DiMarco], like ‘Summer Lovin’ [Nights],’” the 27-year-old shared.

Richardson and DiMarco’s rendition of the Grease track was apparently so good, it ended up being a favorite of fellow cast member Meghann Fahy, who plays Daphne. “My favorite song was not a song that I did, but it was “Summer Lovin’ [Nights],” the actress said in an October interview with Vulture. “Hayley and Adam did it together, and that really brought the house down. Total banger.”

While Richardson did not identify which Spice Girls tracks she liked to sing to, the girl group’s signature hit “Wannabe” could be among the mix. After all, the song spent four weeks at No. 1 and a total of 23 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart following its release in 1996. The song also ranked at No. 43 on Billboard‘s 100 Greatest Karaoke Songs of All Time list. And while Grease‘s “Summer Nights” did not make the tally, the movie’s upbeat John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John duet “You’re the One That I Want” landed at No. 45 on the chart.

Luck Ra & Ke Personajes Earn First No. 1 on Billboard Argentina Hot 100 With ‘Ya No Vuelvas’

Argentinians Luck Ra and Ke Personajes score their first leader on the Billboard Argentina Hot 100 chart, as “Ya No Vuelvas,” with La K’Onga, ascends 2-1 on the Feb. 18-dated ranking.

While Luck Ra bests his previous peak of No. 11 with “Te Mentiría,” with Rusherking (May 2022), Ke Personajes also add new career achievements as two of their total six entries reach new highs: as mentioned, “Ya No Vuelvas” leads the chart, while “Si No Te Tengo/ Angel/ Aquello Que Pasó” peaks at No. 33. The group also scores two new debuts on the current chart: “Otro Día Más,” featuring La Contra, at No. 93 and “Adiós Amor, Oye Mujer” at No. 99. Meanwhile, the song is the second leader for Argentinian trio La K’onga after “Universo Paralelo,” featuring Nahuel Pensi, ruled for one week in March 2022.

Back in the top 10, as “Ya No Vuelvas” takes the lead, it sends Bizarrap and Shakira’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53″ to the runner-up slot after four consecutive weeks in charge.

Big One and Callejero Fino claim their highest ranking as “En La Intimidad,” with Emilia, rallies 9-2 in its third week. Plus, TINI, La Joaqui and Steve Aoki’s “Muñecas” dips 3-4, and BM’s “M.A (Mejores Amigos)” jumps 6-5. Further, Lil Cake and Migrantes’ “Mercho” featuring Nico Vadi, climbs 10-6, while Yandel notches his first top 10 as “Yandel 150,” with Feid, climbs 13-10.

The Greatest Gainer honors of the week goes to Luck Ra, La T Y La M and Rusherking’s “Quiero Creer” with a 38-13 surge.

TINI’s “Cupido” takes the week’s Hot Shot Debut at No. 52. She adds a 28th career entry, the third-most for a female act behind Maria Becerra’s 38 total entries and and Karol G’s 29. Among all acts, Bad Bunny continues in the lead with 55 entries on his account.

Finally, three other songs debut this week, starting with Karol G and Romeo Santos’ “X Si Volvemos” at No. 65, Alan Gomez, Callejero Fino, Javiielo, and Julianno Sosa’s “Mío No Tuyo” at No. 88, and Quevedo’s “Wanda” at No. 90.

Nipsey Hussle’s Killer Gets 60 Years to Life in Prison

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles judge on Wednesday (Feb. 22) sentenced the man convicted of gunning down rapper Nipsey Hussle to 60 years to life in prison.

Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke II handed down the of-delayed sentence to Eric R. Holder Jr., 33, who was found guilty of the 2019 first-degree murder of the 33-year-old Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist outside the clothing store Hussle founded, the Marathon, in the South Los Angeles neighborhood where both men grew up in very similar circumstances.

After the monthlong trial, jurors in July also convicted Holder of two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a firearm for gunfire that hit two other men at the scene who survived.

Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke handed down the sentence Wednesday after hearing from one of Hussle’s friends and listening to a letter from Holder’s father that was read in court. Holder, dressed in orange jail attire, stared straight ahead throughout the proceedings and did not react when the sentence was read.

Holder was not eligible for the death penalty. He was nearly certain to get a sentence that would guarantee he would spend the rest of his life in prison, with only the details of his term in question.

The sentencing has been delayed in part so defense attorney Aaron Jansen could argue to reduce Holder’s conviction to manslaughter or second-degree murder, which Jacke rejected in December.

Hussle, whose legal name is Ermias Asghedom, and Holder had known each other for years growing up as members of the Rollin’ 60s in South LA. Both were aspiring rappers. But Holder never found the same success as Hussle, who would become a local hero and a national celebrity.

Actor Lauren London, who was Hussle’s partner and the mother of his two young children, did not attend any part of the trial, nor did any of his relatives, and none are expected to give victim impact statements, as often happens at such hearings.

Herman “Cowboy” Douglas, a close friend of Hussle who was standing with him when he was killed and testified during the trial, told the court that the killing was a tremendous loss both for him personally and for the South Los Angeles community where Hussle was a business leader and an inspiration.

“Nipsey was my friend, he was like a son, he was like a dad,” Douglas said. “Our community right now, we lost everything, everything we worked for. One man’s mistake, one man’s action, messed up a whole community.”

Douglas told the judge, “I don’t care what you give this guy. It ain’t about the time. I just want to know why. The world wants to know why. Why someone would do that?”

The evidence against Holder was so overwhelming — from eyewitnesses to surveillance cameras from local businesses that captured his arrival, the shooting and his departure — that his attorney conceded during trial that he had shot Hussle.

But Jansen argued to jurors that the heated circumstances of the shooting meant a lesser verdict of voluntary manslaughter was merited.

The jury returned with the first-degree murder verdict after about six hours of deliberations.

Jansen said afterward that he was “deeply disappointed” in the verdict, which they planned to appeal.

He did manage a minor victory for Holder by securing the attempted voluntary manslaughter convictions where prosecutors had sought attempted murder verdicts.

A year after his death, Hussle was mourned at a memorial at the arena then known as Staples Center, and celebrated in a performance at the Grammy Awards that included DJ Khaled and John Legend.

Horror video games are all the rage again, and Blumhouse Productions, one of the biggest studios that push out horror films at a ridiculous clip, is getting in on the action.

The studio behind M3GAN, Insidious, The Black Phone, and GET OUT is looking to make the next big horror game with the announcement of Blumhouse Gaming.

According to Deadline, Jason Blum’s production company, Blumhouse Productions, will enter the gaming space as Blumhouse Gaming, Zach Wood as President, and Don Sechler as CFO.

While the goal is to produce and publish games, Blumhouse Games aims to help independent game developers create “original, horror-themed games for console, PC, and mobile audiences.”

Indie Developers Blumhouse Games Is Looking To Work With You

Per Deadline, Blumhouse Games solely “will target indie-budget games (below $10M) in pushing creative boundaries.”

“For some time, we have been looking to build out a team to start accessing the growth opportunity in interactive media. When we sat with Zach and Don, they articulated an approach that resonated with Blumhouse’s model, and we knew it was a perfect place for us to start our push into the interactive space,” Abhijay Prakash, Blumhouse President, said in a statement.

“With their experience, sensibility, and knowledge of the gaming marketplace, Zach and Don are the ideal leaders to leverage Blumhouse’s unique genre strengths into gaming,” he continued.

Wood adds, “Through my time in the industry, I’ve had the good fortune of working closely with developers to bring their ideas to life. There’s a unique opportunity for horror and genre in the indie game space, and I’m thrilled about teaming up with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company’s brand, reputation, and creative talent.”

Does this mean we might get a video game based on M3GAN or GET OUT? We sure hope so.

‘The Voice’ Announces Season 23 Mega Mentor and Changes to Competition

The Voice announced that country icon Reba McEntire will serve as the Mega Mentor for the upcoming 23rd season of the show when it returns on NBC on March 6. McEntire will be on hand to join new coaches Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan as well as returning chair turners Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton, who is making his final spin on the series as the only original cast member after a 12-year run.

McEntire and the coaches will mentor the acts who make it through the Battle Rounds as the teams prepare for the Knockouts that begin on April 17. McEntire was a Battle Advisor to Shelton’s team during season one, which makes her return for Blake’s final curtain even more poignant.

A release announcing McEntire’s return also noted that the show will add some important changes to the format that will make the competition even more fierce this time around. Starting on March 27, the new “Playoff Pass” will let both artists in a battle advance, with one “Pass” winner snagging a big advantage when they skip the Knockout Rounds and automatically advance to the Playoffs.

Each coach will have one Playoff Pass and one steal during this round, with seven artists from each team advancing — six to compete in the Knockout rounds and one Pass artist. During the Knockouts, artists will be paired against each other and pick their own songs to perform individually while their competitors wait and watch from the sidelines. The coaches will then choose the winner, with the artist not selected available to return via a steal; each coach has only one steal during this round as five artists per team advance.

Finally, during the return of the playoff rounds beginning on May 1, the 20 remaining acts will face off as each coach has to pick two to advance to the live semifinals. This season’s live shows will kick off on May 15. The season 23 premiere of The Voice airs on NBC on March 6 at 8 p.m. ET.

Superstar Pride (real name: Cadarrius Pride) is brand new to Billboard’s charts, and to the music world at large, having never appeared on a ranking before this week. He has released seven additional songs on Spotify, including his EP 5LBS OF PRESSURE (which includes “Painting Pictures”).

He concurrently debuts at No. 23 on the Emerging Artists chart.
