Labrinth Drops Trailer for ‘Euphoria’ Track ‘Never Felt So Alone’ … But Wait, Is That Billie Eilish?

Billie, or no Billie? That is the question. Fans have been convinced for days that Labrinth‘s highly anticipated track “Never Felt So Alone” will feature a guest spot from Billie Eilish, but there’s still no official confirmation in sight.

There is, however, a brand new trailer for the song featuring someone who definitely looks a lot like the “Bad Guy” singer — even though you can’t actually see her face. Her likeness is crawling on the floor with wet hair covering her eyes and cheeks at the 15-second mark in the video teaser shared Tuesday (April 4) on Labrinth’s YouTube channel.

Clearer shots of Lab himself are also featured throughout the trailer, but a warped camera lens makes it difficult to tell what’s happening in the video. At one point, he seems to be rolled into a mysterious room on a stretcher; in another scene, he and a group of men are chained to a weird metal structure.

“Never Felt So Alone” was featured in Euphoria‘s second season, but has remained unreleased since the show’s latest installment dropped on HBO Max last year, unlike the lion’s share of Labrinth’s original songs and collaborations with leading lady Zendaya and a handful of guest artists for the official soundtrack. That all changes on Friday (April 7), when the ethereal electro-pop mix finally arrives on streaming services.

Fans have suspected that Eilish would be jumping on the track for its official release since Lab first announced on Instagram last week that he’d be dropping the song. All it took to send fans spiraling was the “Happier Than Ever” singer’s comment on his post: a simple winky face — ;).

It’s also worth noting that Labrinth was one of Eilish’s special guests during one of her hometown shows at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles in December. The two teamed up that night for a live performance of, you guessed it — “Never Felt So Alone.”

Every Music Lawyer You Need To Know – Plus The Rolling Stones, Tory Lanez & More

This is The Legal Beat, a weekly newsletter about music law from Billboard Pro, offering you a one-stop cheat sheet of big new cases, important rulings and all the fun stuff in between.

This week: Billboard reveals its yearly list of the top lawyers in the music industry; experts weigh in on the recent copyright infringement lawsuit against the Rolling Stones; Tory Lanez asks for a new trial following his conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion; and much more.

THE BIG STORY: The Lawyers Behind The Music Biz

Billboard revealed its yearly list of top attorneys in the music industry this week, breaking down not only the best dealmakers and litigators at the country’s elite law firms, but also the key players from in-house legal departments at record labels, streamers, concert promoters and more.

Among other things, we asked this year’s honorees to name the pressing concern facing the music business in 2023. One of the most common responses from the folks who get paid to worry about future legal problems? The rise of so-called generative artificial intelligence tools like the popular ChatGPT.

“Those of us representing human artists and songwriters will have to stay ahead of the curve to ensure our clients have the opportunity to evolve in tandem with technology,” said Farrah A. Usmani, an attorney at the firm Nixon Peabody.

To read this year’s full list of Top Music Lawyers – featuring dozens of names with short blurbs on why they matter in 2023’s music industry – go read the entire thing here.

Other top stories…

NO SATISFACTION LIKELY FOR STONES ACCUSER – I took a deep dive last week into the recent copyright lawsuit claiming that the Rolling Stones copied their 2020 song “Living In A Ghost Town” from two little-known tracks, chatting with musicologists and litigators to understand the allegations and whether they’re likely to succeed. Go read what they said here.

MORE ROLLING STONES LITIGATION – In unrelated news, a new trademark lawsuit was filed that centers on the famed “tongue and lips” logo used by the Stones since 1971. The case was filed by a clothing chain that says it was threatened by a UMG-owned merch company with “unfounded” infringement litigation after it featured a similar design on t-shirts. (The band itself is not involved in the litigation and is not accused of any wrongdoing.)

TORY LANEZ DEMANDS NEW TRIAL – Attorneys for the rapper asked a Los Angeles judge for a new trial after he was convicted in December in the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, calling the guilty verdict a “miscarriage of justice.” Such requests are standard procedure for someone who has lost at trial, but they are very rarely granted.

NICK CARTER COUNTERSUIT MOVES AHEAD – A Las Vegas judge refused to dismiss a countersuit filed by Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter against Shannon “Shay” Ruth, a woman who has accused him of rape. Ruth claimed that Carter’s defamation case was a so-called SLAPP suit that aimed only to “harass and intimidate” her, but Judge Nancy Alff was not convinced.

COACHELLA SETTLES ‘COACHILLIN’ LAWSUIT – The organizers of the annual festival agreed to drop a trademark lawsuit against Coachillin Business Park, a development site located just a few miles to the north of the grounds. Under the terms of the settlement, Coachillin said it would “cease any and all use” of the name going forward.

Foo Fighters to Play Opening Show at 9:30 Club Replica The Atlantis in Washington, D.C.

The magic number is 44 for I.M.P. productions today as it prepares for the 44th anniversary of the opening of the original 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., with the May 30 launch of Atlantis, a 450-capacity venue with 44 underplay shows booked through late September — including an opening show from the Foo Fighters — all priced at $44.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl let the news slip that I.M.P. would open a new, smaller venue fashioned as a near-replica of the original 9:30 Club — where he got his start — when he reopened the venue in 2021 following the COVID-19 shutdown.

“We’ll probably be the band that opens that place, too, right?” he told the confused audience at the time. Notably, the original 9:30 Club — located at 930 F Street, NW in D.C. — was previously home to another club called Atlantis prior to I.M.P.’s takeover of the venue in 1980.

The new Atlantis, which cost $10 million, will be located next to the newer, 1,200-capacity 9:30 Club, located at 815 V St NW. It will serve as a replica of the original 9:30 Club, “sans the gargantuan rats and notorious stench, but with a nod to the infamous pole,” a press release reads.

“We’ve been doing our smallest shows in other peoples’ venues for too many years now,” said Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P. “We needed a place that’s ours. This can be the most exciting step in an artist’s career. This will be where we help introduce new artists to the world, and their story needs to be told right. Our smallest venue will be treated as important, if not more, than our bigger venues. If the stories are told right, both the artists and the fans begin their hopefully long-term relationship, and we as promoters do better too.”

When Foo Fighters kick off this new era of The Atlantis, Dave Grohl won’t just be christening the room – he’ll be honoring the legacy of a space that he attended as a kid and later took the stage of with bands like Scream and Nirvana.

Tickets for the inaugural run of shows at The Atlantis will be $44 each and non-transferable. They will be sold via a lottery-style process, with protections to ensure that real fans attend the shows. To thwart scalping, The Atlantis is utilizing Ticketmaster Request for the inaugural run of shows, which is open now at TheAtlantis.com and will run through Friday (April 7) at 11:59 p.m.. ET. Fans will learn next week if their ticket requests have been fulfilled. If a ticketholder is unable to make the show, a fan-to-fan face-value ticket exchange option will be available.

The Atlantis will be booked by Zhubin Aghamolla, who also books The Anthem and Merriweather Post Pavilion, while Sam Hurwitz has been named general manager. Hurwitz has served as front-of-house manager for D.C. club The Anthem since 2018.

Watch ‘Barbie’ Have ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ in New Movie Trailer

Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film Barbie offered a look at Barbie Land in its second teaser trailer — released on Tuesday (April 4) — which features an abundance of technicolor sets, a star-studded cast and a 1964 hit by The Beach Boys.

Starring as the main Barbie in the film, Margot Robbie kicks off the trailer by saying hello to her fellow Barbie counterparts (Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp and Ana Cruz Kayne) as they lounge on a bright beach. The Kens — Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu — also say hello to Barbie in a not-so-subtle competition for her attention. (Dua Lipa also stars in the movie as a Barbie mermaid, though she did not make an appearance in the trailer.)

As Barbie drives through the picture-perfect Barbie Land in her pink convertible, The Beach Boys’ hit “Fun, Fun, Fun” fitting blasts through the trailer. “And with the radio blasting/ Goes cruising just as fast as she can now/ And she’ll have fun fun fun,” lead singer Brian Wilson sings.

“Fun, Fun, Fun” was released as a single from the group’s 1964 album Shut Down Volume 2. The track, written by Wilson and his fellow group member Mike Love, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent a total of 11 weeks on the chart in 1964.

Barbie — which, per the film’s official synopsis, follows the tale of the titular doll on a quest to find happiness “after being expelled from Barbie Land for being a less than perfect-looking” — arrives in theaters on July 21.

Kid Rock (Literally) Takes Shots at Bud Light After Brand Teams With Trans Activist

Kid Rock is taking out his frustration on a few dozen cans of Bud Light.

Late Monday night (April 3), the “Bad Reputation” singer posted a video of himself across his social media accounts, speaking directly to the camera. Wearing a white MAGA hat, the rock-rapper said that “Grandpa’s feeling a bit frisky today,” and promised to be as “clear and concise as possible” with his statement.

The “Devil Without a Cause” singer then lifted up a semi-automatic rifle and opened fire on three cases of Bud Light propped up on a wooden table. Ceasing his fire on the beer cans, Rock looked back into the camera to make his point clear: “F–k Bud Light, and f–k Anheuser-Busch.”

The video came shortly after trans activist Dylan Mulvaney teamed up with Anheuser-Busch to promote the brand’s Easy Carry Contest, posting a video of herself talking about the campaign and even receiving “possibly the best gift ever” — a commemorative can of Bud Light with her face on it.

Mulvaney’s video immediately sparked outrage from right-wing commentators, who lambasted the brand for working with a transgender influencer. Anheuser-Busch responded to the backlash in a statement to Fox News, saying the company works with “hundreds of influencers across our brands as one of many ways to authentically connect with audiences across various demographics and passion points,” and adding that Mulvaney’s commemorative can “was a gift to celebrate a personal milestone and is not for sale to the general public.”

The ongoing backlash comes at a time when transgender people are being targeted at a steady cadence by state legislatures around the U.S. Kentucky became the latest state to pass anti-trans legislation into law last week when lawmakers overrode Gov. Andy Beshear‘s veto of a bill banning gender-affirming care for anyone under the age of 18, while also compelling physicians to cease any ongoing gender-transition care for minors.

Billboard has reached out to Kid Rock, Dylan Mulvaney and Anheuser-Busch for comment.

Poppy Returns to Sumerian Records, Drops New Single ‘Church Outfit’

American singer/songwriter and Youtuber Poppy has returned to Sumerian Records and released the new single and music video “Church Outfit.”

Sumerian Records founder Ash Avildsen says he was thrilled to bring Poppy — known for representing “a future where high art and high fashion equal subversion of the highest order,” according to her bio — back to Sumerian after a brief stint at Lava Records, which released her EP Stagger last year.

“The only thing more exciting than signing an iconic artist for the first time is signing them again when they choose to return home,” Avildsen says. “Poppy is a pioneer and lover of music, film, pro-wrestling, the unorthodox and the avant-garde. That is why I believe Sumerian is still the best label in the world for her. We are thrilled to have her back.”

During her initial time as a Sumerian Records artist, Poppy released two albums — 2020’s I Disagree and 2021’s Flux — and the 2021 EP Eat (NXT Soundtrack). During that period, she also became the first-ever solo female artist to be nominated for best metal performance at the Grammys for her 2019 single “Bloodmoney.”

Beyond tallying 100 million-plus streams, according to a press release, Poppy has been featured on the covers of NME, Revolver, Upset, Kerrang! and Tush and performed at the 2021 Grammy Awards and the 2022 Glastonbury festival. She’s toured with The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction.

“It’s an artist’s responsibility to always change,” Poppy explained in a press release announcing her return to Sumerian. “I don’t think I’d want to be in my body if I was repeating the same thing over and over again. I’m only competing with myself. I will continue to write the story until I get tired of the book. Then, I’ll write another one.”

“Dogtooth” premiered March 27 alongside the announcement of an expanded edition of Call Me If You Get Lost, dubbed Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale, which adds eight songs to the rapper’s 2021 Billboard 200 No. 1 album. The expanded edition was released March 31.

Despite just four days of sales, streams and airplay toward the April 8 Billboard Hot 100, “Dogtooth” concurrently debuts at No. 81 with 7.3 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate, with a higher rank possible upon the song’s first full seven days (April 15).

“Dogtooth” leads three different Tyler, the Creator songs on the latest Hot Trending Songs list. “She,” from 2011’s Goblin, lands at No. 2, while new cut “Sorry Not Sorry” starts at No. 9.

Why ‘TQG’ Producer Ovy on the Drums Got a Tattoo to Commemorate the Song’s Success

In February, Karol G and Shakira unleashed their first collaborative effort called “TQG” (short for “Te Quedó Grande,” which loosely translates to “I’m Too Good For You”) part of Karol’s fourth studio album Mañana Será Bonito.

The star-studded team-up is powered by a somber, hard-hitting reggaetón beat helmed by artist-producer Ovy on the Drums and packed with fierce and unapologetic lyrics about successfully moving on from an ex. “It hurt me to see you with the new one, but I’m already doing my own thing,” chants Shakira. The long-awaited collaboration finds the two Colombianas in a sultry music video, confirming once more that there’s no messing with them (and their hearts).

“We always have a good time creating music,” Ovy (born Daniel Echavarria Oviedo) tells Billboard of the song’s creative process, which was partly done virtually. “Karol spoke highly of Shakira and told me she was incredible. And this is the result of two of the biggest artists in Colombia. It’s awesome being part of this process and this hit because it’s a collaboration for the books.”

In March, “TQG” became both Karol G and Shakira’s first No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. It also reached the top slot on Hot Latin Songs, where it has since spent five weeks leading the chart.

Below, Ovy explains how the foundation for the international hit, reacts to the song’s success and more.

A collaboration between Karol G and Shakira had long been anticipated by fans. How did those conversations begin, and what was your initial reaction once it was confirmed?

Sometime in January 2022, we were working on “MAMIII” — [Karol G’s] collaboration with Becky G — and after we finished, Karol and I stayed in the studio. That’s when the first version of “TQG” was born.  Honestly, when we had the first version, I never imagined Shakira on the track. Karol was the one who, out of nowhere said, “Ovy, Shakira on ‘TQG’ will be a hit!” She was the one who envisioned it and I got really excited. At the same time, rumors of a collaboration began making the rounds. I already knew that Karol was going to reach out to [Shakira’s] team but when different media [outlets] interviewed me, I would say that I didn’t know anything.

Karol sent it to Shakira, and she added her verse. It was a beautiful team and a song that surprised me. I even got a tattoo of “TQG” because it’s my first No. 1 hit [on the Spotify Global Top 50, as well as the Billboard Global 200] as a producer.

So you never actually met Shakira in person?

I didn’t have the opportunity to meet her, but I would be in touch with her thanks to the voice notes she sent me through her manager. Nowadays, there’s no need to get together in person, though I think it’s best to all be in the studio together. Sometimes, because of distance and time, it’s not possible — and thanks to technology, we can create things virtually. Shakira and Karol didn’t meet in person until the filming of the music video, but Karol did record with me and Shakira recorded with her team.

From the first day in the studio to the day of release, how quickly did you finish the song?

The first version was ready for almost a year, but when Shakira stepped in, we changed it around. She brought her ideas, and we joined them with Karol’s ideas and began reworking the song as a team. Shakira entered the collab around December 2022, and in January, the song was mastered and ready to go because we had to submit Karol’s album, [Mañana Será Bonito].

Did this song ever have another title in mind or was it always going to be called “TQG”?

I wanted it to be called “La Nueva” (“The New One”) but Karol thought of “TQG.” Like “Tusa” and other titles, she’s really good at thinking of song names. She’s a genius, and the title is perfect.

Are there any interesting anecdotes you can share about the process of “TQG”?

We always have a good time creating music, but I know they both connected and had a good [working] relationship. Karol spoke highly of Shakira and told me she was incredible. This is the result of two of the biggest artists in Colombia. It’s awesome being part of this process and this hit because it’s a collaboration for the books.

What is your favorite line or verse from the song?

The part that says: “Es como tapar una herida con maquillaje/No se ve, pero se siente” (“It’s like covering a wound with makeup/It is not seen, but it is felt”) — I love that part!

The song has been extremely successful on the Billboard charts, including a fifth week at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs on charts dated April 8. What’s your reaction to such accolades?

The day I’m not surprised of having another hit, I’ll quit and focus on something else. I do music with so much passion and so much dedication to see these types of results. I want people to enjoy it and for the song to become a hit — I want it to reach places I’ve never imagined. The day Karol made history as the first woman to have a No. 1 with an all-Spanish-language album [on the Billboard 200], that day I cried. Every song has a different story, a different meaning and is born in a different way. They’re all my babies and I like seeing each of them succeed. I’m very happy with everything’s that happening. I’m going to continue creating music and work hard for everything that’s coming.

A version of this story originally appeared in the April 1, 2023, issue of Billboard.

Watch Travis Barker & Kourtney Kardashian Marry 3 Times in ‘Til Death Do Us Part’ Trailer

Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian had not one, not two, but three wedding ceremonies. And in their new Hulu special, ‘Til Death Do Us Part — which now has a release date and trailer — the couple will share behind-the-scenes footage from each one.

As announced Tuesday (April 4), the reality show will premiere Thursday, April 13, on the streaming service. In addition to the Blink-182 drummer and Kardashian’s weddings in Las Vegas and Santa Barbara, ‘Til Death Do Us Part will chronicle the pair’s big-budget, ultra glamorous tying of the knot in Portofino, Italy.

“This is our personal archive footage that we are sharing with the world,” the Poosh founder says in a short trailer for the show, before turning to ask Barker, “Can you believe we got married three times?”

“It’s like choosing a child,” the musician responds. “I can’t pick the best one.”

The trailer also features closeup shots of Kardashian’s romantic wedding gown along with clips of her famous sisters — Kim, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie — enjoying different moments from the couple’s big day. Barker’s daughter Alabama also makes an appearance in the trailer, as does his longtime collaborator and friend Machine Gun Kelly.

The final wedding took place in May 2022 at the seaside estate of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana (yes, that Dolce and Gabbana) in Portofino, with the pair surrounded by friends and family. It came a few months after Kardashian and Barker got engaged in October of 2021, previously going public with their relationship on Valentine’s Day that year.

Jonas Brothers Will Take Over Yankee Stadium for One Night Only Concert

The Jonas Brothers announced on Tuesday (April 4) that they’re headed to Yankee Stadium this summer for a special, one-night-only show.

“NEW YORK! We’ve been dreaming about this one our whole lives. Five albums. One Epic Night. Saturday, August 12 at Yankee Stadium,” the pop stars wrote on social to break the news. They also told fans who’d registered for their recent five-night residency on Broadway to check their emails for information about how to get first access to tickets via a special Verified Fan presale. Tickets will go on sale April 14 via Ticketmaster.

Joe Jonas teased the surprise in the closing moments of their final Broadway show back in mid-March, telling the audience, “Until next time or should I say, until this summer, we’ll see you!” after previewing eight songs of the JoBros’ forthcoming studio set The Album.

The Album is set to be released May 12 via Republic Records and has been preceded by the ’70s-inflected lead single “Wings.” Meanwhile, the next single, “Waffle House,” will arrive this Friday (April 7). “‘Waffle House’ was born from a simple but powerful idea: When you sit down with the people that matter most, anything is possible. This song isn’t about a restaurant, it’s about coming together with the people you love and making your dreams come true,” the siblings previewed last week about the upcoming track.

To celebrate The Album‘s release, the trio are also slated to perform as the musical guests on Saturday Night Live for the April 8 episode hosted by former cast member Molly Shannon.
