At the end of the month, the hosts and Amp will choose three featured Atlanta artists from The Come Up shows. The chosen artists will then receive promotional support across Amazon Music and Amp. That support will include being featured in a docuseries developed and directed by Cam Kirk; interview opportunities on popular Amp shows The Daily Cannon with Nick Cannon and Rotation Radio with Gabe P and Nyla Symone; and inclusion on Amazon Music’s “The Come Up” playlist.

Halsey Signs With Columbia Records

Halsey has signed a new recording deal with Columbia Records, the label announced today (June 14). The news comes two months after the singer’s managers announced they had parted ways with Capitol Records after eight years, a decision managers Jason Aron and Anthony Li of Anti-Pop called “bittersweet” at the time.

Halsey released four albums with Capitol dating back to 2015’s Badlands on its Astralwerks imprint, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200; their next album, 2017’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, was their first to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Both 2020’s Manic and 2021’s If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the chart. Halsey also landed two No. 1s on the Hot 100 in their career: “Without Me,” in 2018, and as a guest artist on The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” in 2016, which was released by Columbia.

In May 2022, Halsey seemed to publicly call out Capitol for not releasing the single “So Good” until “they can fake a viral moment on TikTok,” a claim they made on TikTok. Halsey’s TikTok — in which the singer said “everything is marketing” — then went viral, seemingly proving that, indeed, everything is marketing.

In April, Aron and Li’s statement about Halsey’s departure from Capitol continued that “we are excited about exploring a new partnership and sharing new music with fans.” At the time, a Capitol spokesperson said, “Everyone at Capitol poured their hearts and souls into helping Halsey achieve their dreams and present their music to the world. We are incredibly proud of all we accomplished together, and wish Halsey the very best in all their future endeavors.”

Halsey has also signed a few deals in other areas of their business: in November, they signed a publishing agreement with BMG, while in September their cosmetics brand partnered with Live Nation. In May, they penned a Tumblr post saying they are “hard at work” on new music.

Comic Book Legend John Romita Jr. Passes Away At 93

Today (June 14) the comic book world mourns as one of its most revered comic book artists/creators/legends has passed away.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, OG Marvel comic book artist and creator, John Romita Sr. has died at the age of 93. With a “heavy heart,” his son, John Romita Jr. took to Twitter to announce the sad news this past Tuesday night (June 13) while giving his father his flowers writing, “He is a legend in the art world and it would be my honor to follow in his footsteps.”

For those who aren’t familiar with John Romita Sr.’s career, the man wasn’t just a talented comic book artist, but also co-created some of your favorite iconic superheroes such as Wolverine, The Punisher, Luke Cage and Spidey’s wifey, Mary Jane Watson.

The Hollywood Reporter reports:

One of five kids, Romita Sr. was born in Brooklyn, the son of a baker. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Industrial Art in 1947, served in the U.S. Army and was working in comics by age 19, getting published in Eastern Color’s Famous Funnies.

For a decade and a half, he split time between the companies that eventually would become Marvel and DC — Timely Comics and National Comics, respectively — working on a number of titles and gaining a reputation for his romance comics.

In 1966, Romita began a five-year run working Marvel editor-in-chief Stan Lee on The Amazing Spider-Man. He took over for artist Steve Ditko, who had created the famed webslinger with Lee in 1961 before leaving in a spat with the comic book legend.

Luckily for the comic book universe, his son, John Romita Jr. has already been carving out his own niche in the comic book world for a while now and seems to be properly carrying the Romita legacy into the next generation and beyond. His father must be proud.

After news of his passing hit social media, many of his peers and others who’ve worked in the comic book industry took to their pages to pay homage to the comic book legend with kind words and appreciation for his work. Check out some of the tributes below and let us know your feelings in the comments section below.

Wu-Tang Clan Headlines HOT 97’s Hip-Hop Forever Concert

HOT 97 has announced a new star-studded concert in honor of Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary, which will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

On Monday (June 12), the iconic radio network announced the Hip-Hop Forever concert to celebrate the anniversary of the culture. The show is organized in partnership with WBLS. The one-day event will be curated by veteran DJ Funk Flex with the Wu-Tang Clan as the headliners. Other artists set to perform are Mary J. Blige, EPMD, Tyrese and Sean Paul. Mariah Carey and Maxwell are also on the bill as special guests, but there is no word yet on if they’ll be performing as well. The Wu-Tang Clan will begin the North American leg of their N.Y. State of Mind Tour with Nas and De La Soul the next evening.

The show is notable as the Wu-Tang Clan and HOT 97 have repaired a once highly-publicized rift that began in 1997 over the group being asked to headline Summer Jam for free. As detailed in the 2019 documentary series Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mice and Men, they were also asked to come to the event without the network paying for it. Ghostface Killah took the stage at that Summer Jam concert, shouting “F**k 97!!” and prompting fans to repeat the message, which resulted in the station banning their music being played for a number of years. Funk Flex also personally apologized to the group, posting a message on his Instagram account earlier this year.

HOT 97’s show marks yet another activation in honor of the birthday of Hip-Hop culture, Aug. 11, 1973. The events include the Hip-Hop 50 Live concert by MassAppeal, which will take place on the actual date at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The concert will feature Run DMC in their final concert appearance ever, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, T.I., Lupe Fiasco and others. The concert will be held at Madison Square Garden on Friday, Sept. 15th Pre-sale tickets are through Ticketmaster at this link on Thursday (June 15). The general public will be able to obtain tickets on Friday (June 16).

Niche-Focused Funds Are the Next ‘Natural Step’ in Music Investment

Would you rather own the rights to Bruce Springsteen’s song catalog or the musical scores to hit Nickelodeon TV shows such as iCarly, Victorious and Henry Danger?

While those tween comedies may not be household names, fans stream them worldwide, and unlike Springsteen’s masters and publishing rights — which Sony bought for $500 million in 2021 — the rights to their scores sold for tens of millions, presenting, for some, an appealing and approachable investment.
The Nickelodeon shows’ music is an example of the kinds of deals being done by a new crop of music investment funds that are focused on acquiring the one type of music they know best, often for a much lower price than the deals making headlines.

Funds like Armada Music’s BEAT (focused on dance), Jamar Chess’ Wahoo Music Fund One (Latin), Singapore’s blackx (the Asian music market) and Multimedia Music (film and TV music) have all launched in roughly the last 18 months with similar aims: to exploit their specialized genre knowledge and industry connections to buy rights to songs in one category and earn a return.

The principals of these funds, which have raised between $100 million (BEAT, blackx) and $200 million (Multimedia) from banks and investment firms, say the primary difference between them and funds like Primary Wave and Hipgnosis, which have institutional and private equity backing, is that their success hinges on a lower cost of entry and therefore present less risk.

“It’s a niche within a niche,” says Phil Hope, founder/CEO of Multimedia Music, which recently bought the music income and copyrights to scores from the Nickelodeon shows. “People see that there’s a well-priced opportunity in what we’re doing. Is it as obvious or as sexy as buying a big artist’s catalog? It needs a bit of explaining.”

Each fund faces its own challenges, but in an investment class, where the slowing of streaming growth and high interest rates are prompting greater investor scrutiny, these funds present the next natural step, says Bob Valentine, president of Concord. “We are now at the evolution stage of the investment thesis,” says Valentine, who will become Concord’s CEO in July. “There is still supersize growth in some of these genres — like Latin, dance, EDM. Investment managers are thinking, ‘The cost of capital is going up. Let’s find the genres that are going to outpace that index trend. Then, if the cost of capital goes up, we still outpace it.’ ”

Founded in late 2021 by Hope and James Gibb, Multimedia Music has acquired the rights to dozens of film and TV scores, including James Newton Howard’s catalog (Pretty Woman, Fantastic Beasts and the Hunger Games films), the STX music library catalog (Bad Moms, The Foreigner) and in-demand composers like Tyler Bates (the Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick franchises, Deadpool 2).
Multimedia has raised $200 million in debt and investment from Metropolitan Partners, Pinnacle Financial Partners and others to buy the rights to film and TV music that is reliably played — whether streamed, broadcast or licensed by filmmakers.

“Initially, investors were excited but didn’t understand it. They kept saying, ‘I don’t know who’s going to be streaming film and TV music on Spotify,’ ” Gibb says. “What we’re looking at are the TV shows and films that have longevity so that every time they get played anywhere in the world, we get streaming royalties paid back to us.”

Chess, whose Latin music-focused Wahoo Music Fund One launched in 2022, says he also spends time educating prospective investors. “You’re buying into cultural artifacts and less into a net publisher’s share of now. That’s why it’s a good deal,” says Chess, whose grandfather, Leonard Chess, co-founded Chicago’s legendary Chess Records.

Last year, Wahoo acquired a 50% stake in the publishing and recording catalog of Oro Solido, a classic merengue group, for an undisclosed amount. Chess says he is in talks to acquire two more catalogs that are also considered classics in the Latin genre — a status that makes them marketable for new recordings and sampling by current Latin artists.

But despite the surging popularity of Latin American music — recorded-music revenue grew by nearly 26% in Latin America last year, according to IFPI — Chess says investor interest is still lagging.
“We are not competing against a Sony buying [Bad Bunny’s label] Rimas,” says Chess, who is also president of Spirit Music Latino. “There is a wealth of opportunity across the [Latin American] territories, and sometimes lining up investors can be a challenge.”

BEAT Music Fund was launched in April by independent dance music label Armada Music. Its first acquisitions were rights belonging to artists it has ties to, like Detroit techno forefather Kevin Saunderson’s KMS Records and Russian DJ ARTY. BEAT enters the investment space at a time when the global dance music industry grew by 34% to $11.3 billion in revenue in 2022. Its fan base is also growing 10 times faster than hip-hop on TikTok, according to a new report from MIDiA Research.

“Our plan is to invest $100 million in its first two years and increase the investment to at least $500 million in coming years,” says Nadine van Bodegraven, COO for the fund. “Our goal is to announce at least one new deal every month this year.”

EMPIRE Names Alexandra Moore as Chief Business Officer

Bay Area-based record label, distributor and publisher EMPIRE has named Alexandra Moore its new chief business officer, the company announced today (June 14). In her new role, Moore will be leading business and revenue-driving initiatives, overseeing content distribution, e-commerce, business development, mergers and acquisitions and the company’s international expansion, which has recently extended to Japan, South Africa and Latin America.

Moore was an executive at Amazon for many years, first as part of the company’s central corporate development team leading investments and acquisitions in digital media and consumer products, then at Amazon Music, where she led the global strategic initiatives and strategy department. As part of that, she oversaw Amazon Music’s concert live streams and digital radio products, as well as merch and international initiatives.

“Alex is a proven leader with strong business and operational acumen ” EMPIRE founder/CEO Ghazi said in a statement. “She has a wealth of relationships in the music, talent and consumer internet industries and beyond and I am confident she will be a key player to amplify our global presence.”

Prior to Amazon, Moore worked at Electronic Arts, Marsh & McLennan and as an investment banker at Citigroup.

“As a Bay Area Native, it’s always been an aspiration to work for a local powerhouse,” Moore said in a statement. “EMPIRE has been innovative for the last 15 years in its approach to both working with artists and building music businesses, and I couldn’t be more excited to join the team to lead the company’s continued business growth and expansion globally.”

Luke Bryan Defends Katy Perry After Season 21 ‘American Idol’ Backlash: ‘Katy Gets Picked on For… Trying to Have Fun Making a TV Show’

Luke Bryan wishes people would give Katy Perry a break. In a Fox News interview, the country star weighed in on some of the criticism his fellow judge got this season on American Idol and why he doesn’t think it’s fair.

“Katy gets picked on for going out and trying to have fun making a TV show,” he said. “You can’t be so safe in the moment that you’re so homogenized, you can’t ever go for a joke. Or go for a fun moment. Sometimes you just gotta say stuff. It may be my year next year.” Perry, Bryan and Lionel Richie have anchored the judge’s desk since Idol jumped from Fox to ABC in 2018 and this year the “Roar” singer came in for some criticism for her comments about several contestants, some of which resulted in her gettin booed by the studio audience.

“Katy Perry’s been dealing with stuff like that her whole career,” Bryan added. “We all get it.… I mean we’re judging kids that people at home fall in love with.… We’re not gonna bat 1,000 as judges.” In fact, Bryan said he thinks the judges get “set up” and sometimes they have to “fall on the sword” to keep the train rolling amid a torrent of commentary on socials.

“My thing is, I think when me and Lionel and Katy sit down at the desk, in our hearts, we’re doing the best we can,” he said. Perry was criticized this season when she joked that singer and mother of three Sara Beth Liebe had been “laying on the table too much.” Liebe accused Perry of “mom-shaming” her and later dropped out of the show even after Katy tried to convince her to stay. Perry also took heat — and got booed — during another episode when she told contestant Nutsa Buzaladze to tone down the glitter on stage.

“You can’t be so safe in the moment that you’re so homogenized, you can’t ever go for a joke. Or go for a fun moment,” Bryan continued, saying that entertainers get conditions and “calloused” to the backlash they often face. “It makes me appreciate her even more, just how big of a scale she’s had to deal with that her whole career.”

Season 21 recently wrapped with the crowning of Hawaiian singer Iam Tongi.

Spanish Star Alejandro Sanz Signs With Sony Music: Exclusive

Spanish star Alejandro Sanz, widely recognized as one of the leading singer/songwriters in Spanish language music, has signed a recording deal with Sony Music, Billboard has exclusively learned.

Sanz inked his new contract June 13 in Madrid, with Afo Verde, chairman/CEO of Sony Music Latin-Iberia, and José María Barbat, president of Sony Music Iberia.

“Happy to join the Sony Music family, a company where I have many friends which whom I share LOVE for MUSIC [sic]. I’m sure together we will have fun doing what we love most,” said Sanz, who holds the record for having the best-selling and second best-selling albums in Spain’s history: 1997’s Más and 2000’s El Alma Al Aire, respectively.

“We’re very honored and excited to welcome Alejandro to Sony Music and deeply hope this will be a very happy stage in his life,” said Verde. “It will no doubt be a thrill for us to work together with this marvelous artist, not only because of his professional excellence but also his human qualities.”

Sanz has won four Grammy awards and 25 Latin Grammys — the most for a Spanish artist — in his storied career, which includes 18 albums that have sold over 25 million copies, according to his label. He has also collaborated with a long string of artists, from Shakira to Alicia Keys, and was one of Rosalía’s early supporters, and is also known for his social activism and his work with organizations like Save The Children and Doctors Without Borders.

“Beyond his uncommon talent, Alejandro is an amazing person,” added Barbat, citing Sanz’s multiple collaborations, and the fact that he was one of Rosalía’s early advocates.

Originally signed to Warner Music, where he remained for over a decade, Sanz became an international star with 1997’s Más, which boasted global hit “Corazón Partío,” a track that managed to blend his Spanish pop with tinges of flamenco and exceptional lyrics. Sanz quickly became a model to follow in terms of musicality and commercial appeal, and developed close friendships with artists like Shakira and Carlos Vives. He also became a top touring act; his current Sanz en Vivo tour includes over 60 dates that already saw him play throughout Latin America, followed by Spain in June, July and August and the U.S. and Mexico in the Fall.

In 2011, left Warner for Universal Music, where he remained up until now.

Then, last year, Sanz signed an unorthodox management agreement with two separate executives, each of them focused on a different area of his career. Alex Mizrahi, who heads management and promotion company OCESA-Seitrack, now oversees Sanz’s international management and business; and Iñigo Zabala, the former president of Warner Music Iberia and Latin America, and the person who originally signed Sanz to Warner years ago, oversees his recording career and creative output.

Those changes have now led to Sony Music.

“Dear Alex, thanks for your trust,” Verde said to Sanz. “Thanks to you and your beautiful team: Iñigo Zabala, Alex Mizrahi and Octavio Padilla. Welcome home. From the bottom of my heart. This is just beginning.”

Eminem’s Daughter, Alaina Marie Scott, Posts Pics From Wedding With Sister Hailie Jade

Eminem‘s daughter, Alaina Marie Scott, celebrated her wedding to Matt Moeller on Tuesday (June 13) with a series of pictures from the couple’s Detroit nuptials. “June 9, 2023 simply one of the best days of my life? in this lifetime and in the next, my soul will always find yours,” the bride wrote in an Instagram post that featured glamour shots of the happy couple.

The roll opens with an epic snap of the pair on a rooftop, with Scott’s billowing veil blowing in the wind behind her as they kiss, followed by a more intimate shot of them smooching in an elevator and then again outside their vintage limo. In other pictures, the pair show off their wedding rings by flipping a finger to the camera, share a slow dance during the reception and pose with their wedding party, including Alaina’s sister, Hailie Jade, who served as the maid of honor.

Famous dad Marshall Mathers — who adopted niece Alaina, 30, more than 20 years ago when her biological mom, Em’s ex Kim Mathers’ sister, Dawn Scott, died of a suspected drug overdose — did not appear to make a cameo in the pictures. She has, however, been memorialized in his lyrics over the years, including in 2004’s “Mockingbird,” where he raps, “Lainey, uncle’s crazy ain’t he?/ Yeah, but he loves you girl and you better know it/ We’re all we got in this world/ When it spins, when it swirls/ When it whirls, when it twirls, two little beautiful girls.”

In a 2004 interview with Rolling Stone Eminem talked about their relationship, saying, “I have full custody of my niece… my niece has been a part of my life ever since she was born. Me and Kim pretty much had her, she’d live with us wherever we was at.”

Alaina also posted a brief video in which she wears a feather-decked white silk robe while flashing her engagement ring — before the scene switches to the wedding day — with the caption, “Love, Mr & Mrs Moeller.”

See the wedding pics below.
