Viewers will get a glimpse at her life before breaking into the industry, traveling back to Oakland, Calif., where the Woman to Woman artist honed her craft. Her journey wasn’t without obstacles though. We’ll also watch the difficulties she faced including a complicated relationship with her mother and childhood trauma. This all leads to her eventual success and rise to a multi-platinum-selling recording artist and television personality.

Cole even dedicates the film to her mother, noting their good-natured relationship despite a rocky past.

“This is a story of a daughter’s love for her mother and although my heart remains broken from her untimely passing I am honored to be sharing it with the world,” said Cole in a previous news statement. “Playing the role of myself was a unique opportunity to re-live special moments in my life that also gave me the chance to process her loss in ways I did not expect. I miss her every day and even though she is not here, her presence was felt throughout this film. Mom, I love you.”

Other actors starring alongside the singer include Debbi Morgan as Frankie Lons, Joseph C. Phillips and Tonia Jackson as her foster parents Leon and Yvonne Coles, and Cindi Davis and Brittney Level as her sisters Neffe and Elite.

AFROPUNK announced their lineup for their annual festival held in Brooklyn, with Jazmine Sullivan and Flying Lotus as headline performers.

On Thursday (June 22), the annual festival celebrating Black culture in an unapologetic form, announced its full lineup for the weekend in addition to a new location. “AFROPUNK isn’t just about the music, it’s a community of people who reject societal norms and embrace their true selves, no matter what anyone else thinks,” their announcement reads. Grammy Award-winning R&B songstress Jazmine Sullivan and producer/rapper Flying Lotus will be the main headliners for the event. Other artists on the bill will include Joey Bada$$, Vince Staples, Baby Tate, Sudan Archives, Madison McFerrin and Durand Benarr, and more.

The festival will also have a new location. Normally held for years at Commodore Barry Park in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, this year it will take place at the Skyline Drive-In, located on the waterfront in the Greenpoint neighborhood a few miles away. Organizers say that the theme for this year is “Circus of Soul,” where the space will be turned “into a carnivalesque exhibition that spotlights all aspects of Black creativity.” The festival will take place on August 26 and August 27.

AFROPUNK Brooklyn will also feature the Spinthrift Market, which will showcase local Black vendors and their wares in addition to the Bites and Beats concession area. The event honoring Black women for their contributions featured India.Arie, UMI and Danielle Ponder among the performers taking part. Tasha K is still on Cardi B’s smoke list. Bardi made sure to check the blogger after mentioning Takeoff on social media.

As spotted on HipHopDX, the Bronx bombshell had time on Wednesday (June 21.) For some reason, the YouTube personality felt compelled to comment on Takeoff and lowkey tried to hint that the “Up” rapper was a bit too merry after his tragic passing. “Wasn’t she posting guns right after Takeoff died?? And on the internet, cutting up not long after his sudden takeoff? I’m just asking…Everyone grieve diff…” she wrote.

Naturally, the tweet landed on Cardi B’s radar and she quickly responded. “And Tasha K with your despicable a**.. to bring up Takeoff to prove a fake a** point is disgusting,” she began. “I lost weight, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, me and my man STILL dealing wit that to to this day. I’m a rapper, we targeted all the time so of course I have guns for protection.”

She went on to also reminded Tasha that she needs to pay up. “But since you wanna be funny for comments, ima make sure your kid don’t go to college. You think my lawyers don’t know you hiding money in Africa? Ima make sure I get every red cent of my 4 mill. DONT EVER PUT TAKEOFF NAME IN YA MOUTH.”

Cardi B had even more time and took her talents to the Twitter Spaces platform talking very spicy. “[The Judge] said if you hide any money you’re gonna get in trouble by the court,” Bardi said. “B*tch you’re going to jail. You’re going to jail. You’re going to jail…And then motherf***ers wanna talk about that I was talking about her kids, no b*tch! I wasn’t talking about no motherf***ing kids. Y’all love to twist a b*tch f***ing words. Y’all do that for your own convenience…You ain’t even gonna be able to put your kids through college…f***ing around. Look at the sh*t you have caused yourself with your motherf*cking mouth.”

Nicki Minaj Accused Of Stealing ‘Barbie World’ Song & Replacing Saweetie With Ice Spice

We’re only weeks away from the world premiere of the pending box office bomb, Barbie, and while anticipation for the film is basically nil, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have lent their talents to the soundtrack because that Hollywood bag is something else.

Linking up to give a new spin to the classic Aqua hit, “Barbie World,” Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice give the 1997 chart topper some new life as they give it that glamour Queens to boujee Bronx flavor that no one saw coming, nor asked for in 2023 (no shots).

Naturally, their day-ones support the collaboration, but it doesn’t come without a little controversy as Jason Martin aka Problem is alleging that Nicki stole the idea from him as he was planning on doing something similar with Saweetie. Taking to social media, Martin explained that he and Saweetie “crafted” the record and sent it to Nicki in hopes of getting that collaboration popping for the Barbie soundtrack.

Instead, what they got in return was Nicki replacing Saweetie with arguably the hottest female rapper in the game today, Ice Spice, and what could possibly be the best part of the Barbie movie, “Barbie World” (the flick looks amazingly struggle).

“She said she was gonna do it. Then all of a sudden, a new version was created. Yes, it’s a sample, you can do what you want, but n*gga, you can’t hear one thing, say you’re gonna do this, then go do your version. It ain’t happening like that. Anybody that’s in this business knows that that’s not how this works.”

Martin then posted another video, which he says proves his allegations that Nicki stole the song. Though he’s not picking any sides in this, he promises he “will be compensated.”

Is the man planning a lawsuit, or will he negotiate in private to get his coin? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Check out the video below and let us know if you think Nicki Minaj did him and Saweetie dirty, or if that’s just the game these days.

Young Thug Drops New BUSINESS IS BUSINESS LP, Twitter Approves

HipHopWired Featured Video

CLOSE

BET Experience concert, Los Angeles, USA - 24 Jun 2017

Young Thug is currently fighting for his freedom as the YSL RICO court case is still pending, but that hasn’t stopped him from flooding streets with new music. A new album from the Atlanta star dropped on Friday (June 23) titled BUSINESS IS BUSINESS, and Twitter largely says Young Thug hasn’t lost a step.

Young Thug, real name Jeffrey Williams, released his last full-length Punk back in 2021 to critical acclaim and BUSINESS IS BUSINESS looks to continue that good favor. The album is a star-studded affair with two Drake features, two Travis Scott features, and pair of features from 21 Savage, along with an appearance from Future and others.

The release of the album was unexpected as Thugger has been behind bars since May of 2022. Thug’s work ethic is the stuff of legend so many of these songs were probably vaulted for some time yet still retain the current sound.

Metro Boomin produced the bulk of the album with Wheezy, Aviator Keyz, Dr. Luke, and other notables lending the production touch. We’ve only gone through an initial first listen of the album so we weren’t able to determine if any lyrics were aimed at Young Thug’s former ally, Gunna, but he does address his current legal predicament in passing. Largely, it’s just Young Thug showing off the many styles he can employ from rapping, singing, and his knack for melody.

On Twitter, the reactions are still bubbling up for BUSINESS IS BUSINESS, and we’ve got them listed below.

Luke Combs Claims Two Spots in Country Airplay Chart Top 10

Luke Combs sends his 18th consecutive career-opening single to the top 10 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “Love You Anyway” rises from No. 11 to No. 10 on the list dated July 1.

In the tracking week ending June 22, the song — which Combs co-authored with Ray Fulcher and Dan Isbell — increased by 12% to 17.4 million impressions, according to Luminate.

Plus, Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 classic “Fast Car” (which she penned solo) motors 5-2 (31.1 million, up 18%). The remake has also crossed over, as it places at Nos. 11, 12 and 22 on the Adult Contemporary, Adult Pop Airplay and Pop Airplay charts, respectively.

Combs doubles up in the Country Airplay top 10 for the first time since Oct. 30, 2021, when his “Cold as You” ranked at No. 5 while he was featured on Jameson Rodgers’ “Cold Beer Calling My Name” at No. 7.

‘Last Night’ Still Leads

Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” dominates Country Airplay for an eighth week (32.9 million, down less than 1%). He now boasts the longest-leading hit in the chart’s 33-year history – “You Proof” (10 weeks, 2022) – and, with “Last Night,” ties for the second-longest command. Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” started its eight-week domination in August 2003, after Lonestar’s “Amazed” led for eight frames beginning in August 1999.

Also being supported by pop and adult radio, “Last Night” ranks at No. 8 on Adult Pop Airplay and Pop Airplay and No. 17 on Adult Contemporary.

David Kushner Signs With WME, Announces U.S. Tour

Musician David Kushner has signed with WME in all areas. The Chicago-born Kushner continues to be managed by Brent Shows of ALTAR MGMT. In April, Kushner broke onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his single “Daylight” and plans to take his talent on the road this fall.

After releasing his debut EP Footprint I Found in September, featuring singles “Miserable Man” and “Mr. Forgettable,” Kushner drew attention for his latest single “Daylight.” In addition to reaching the Hot 100, “Daylight” also cracked the top 10 of the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. Chart.

TikTok has been a huge factor in Kushner’s popularity as fans liken his deep vocals to Bon Iver, Hozier and The Lumineers. When he released a snippet of the song in January on the platform, it went viral and racked up more than 230,000 clips on TikTok before its official release on DSPs.

The 23-year-old now boasts over 26 million monthly listeners on Spotify and over 3.9 million followers on TikTok with over 100 million likes on the platform.

Earlier this month, Kushner told Billboard that even though he grew up in a musical family, he struggled to find his voice until a vocal coach encouraged him to experiment with a lower range and he found his artistic footing. “I entered a new creative dimension in a way,” says Kushner, who has since removed those earlier songs from streaming services. “It felt like I stepped from one world into another.”

Starting in September, Kushner will hit North American Leg for his The Daylight Tour 2.0. He is currently scheduled to play 20 sold-out gigs across the U.S. including New York’s Webster Hall, The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles and close out on Oct. 1 at the Showbox in Seattle. Tickets went on sale Friday (June 23) and sold out within hours. A full list of dates can be found below.
