It’s the Summer of Sexyy Red on Streaming

Welcome to Billboard Pro’s Trending Up column, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry’s attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip. 
 
This week: Sexyy Red follows her breakout hit with two more viral singles, Taylor Swift’s new-old smash sends listeners to an even older warm-weather perennial and Myke Towers launches a mid-summer bid for global ubiquity.

Summer 2023 Is Sexyy Red Season 

Sexyy Red is officially one of the biggest breakout artists of summer 2023. The St. Louis rapper has been a social media fixture for years thanks to her vulgar raps and round-the-way personality, but she has now reached a new level of mainstream prominence and commercial success thanks to the virality of several tracks from her latest mixtape, Hood Hottest Princess. 

Back in January, Sexyy Red released “Pound Town,” a delightfully ratchet ode to the crudest edges of the sexual experience, which eventually received an equally ratchet remix from rap icon Nicki Minaj, titled “Pound Town 2” in May – helping the song debut at No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100. Minaj’s remix also kickstarted a new phase of the song’s multi-platform appeal: According to Luminate, “Pound Town” collected 5.4 million official on-demand U.S. streams in the week ending July 6 – up 4% from the previous week – while on radio, “Pound Town” currently ranks at No. 14 on Rap Airplay and No. 21 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay for the charts dated July 15. After driving the culture for so many months — the love for her breakout song is so strong that Sexyy Red gave an impromptu performance of the track from her seat in the audience at the 2023 BET Awards — “Pound Town” now has legitimate commercial success to add to its accolades. 

“Pound Town” functioned as the de facto lead single for Hood Hottest Princess. Released on June 9, the mixtape did not debut on the Billboard 200 until this week’s chart (dated July 15), entering at No. 193 — a testament to the consistent growth of the tape’s streams. Two songs from the 11-track tape have emerged as the follow-ups to “Pound Town:” “Skee Yee,” a burgeoning summer anthem that garnered love on TikTok pre-release, collected 2.5 million official on-demand U.S. streams in the week ending July 6, a 22% increase from the week prior. Aided by a trend in which users aggressively whip their hair as Sexyy Red yells out her “skee yee” ad-lib, the most popular “Skee Yee” sound has over 237,000 clips on TikTok. Recently, Grammy-nominated rap star Travis Scott invited Sexyy Red to perform the song (along with “Pound Town”) during his headlining set at Wireless Festival in London — further proof that the rapper’s TikTok virality is translating into streams and support.  

Another song from her mixtape, “Looking for the H–s (Ain’t My Fault),” is currently going viral on TikTok. Users put their own voice over Sexyy Red’s as she raps, “You like my voice? It turn you on? / This ain’t nothin’, wait ’til you see it in a thong.” “H–s” earned 1.6 million official on-demand U.S. streams in the week ending July 6, a whopping 292% increase from the period prior. The official TikTok sound for the song soundtracks over 305,000 clips on the app. 

All in all, from the period of June 30-July 6, Sexyy Red’s catalog has received 11.1 million official on-demand U.S. streams, a 24.5% increase from the week prior. Between her audacious one-liners and knack for natural hooks, Sexyy Red has become one of the defining artists of the summer, one outrageously obscene song at a time. – KYLE DENIS

A Summer Twice as Cruel: Taylor Swift’s Smash Boosts Bananarama Streams  

On this week’s Hot 100 chart, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” completes its long-overdue climb into the top 10, as the former deep cut from her 2019 album Lover jumps from No. 13 to No. 7 after recently becoming promoted as an official single. “Summer” has benefited from prime placement in Swift’s Eras tour set list, renewed fan support on TikTok and social media as the summer heats up, and prime placement on playlists like Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits and top 40 radio blocks (it’s up to No. 20 on this week’s Radio Songs chart).  

Benefiting, in turn, from Swift’s “Cruel Summer”: Bananarama’s classic hit of the same name. The British trio’s “Cruel Summer” became a new wave crossover hit upon its 1983 release, climbing as high as No. 9 on the U.S. Hot 100. And while Swift’s song becomes the highest-peaking “Cruel Summer” in Hot 100 history this week, Bananarama’s track is riding the “Summer” wave to increased plays, four decades after its release. 

Weekly streams for Bananarama’s hit have increased for seven straight weeks: after earning 519,000 U.S. on-demand streams during the week ending May 25, according to Luminate, the original “Cruel Summer” is up to nearly 724,000 streams for the most recent tracking week (ending July 6), making for a 39% cumulative spike in weekly listens. Of course, streams for Swift’s “Cruel Summer” dwarf those numbers – the song enters the Streaming Songs top 10 with 14.4 million weekly streams for this week. But who knows? Maybe if there’s another hit “Cruel Summer” in the year 2063, Swift’s version will see an uptick then, too. – JASON LIPSHUTZ 

Myke Towers Turns TikTok Into ‘Lala’ Land

Puerto Rican rapper-singer Myke Towers has been a fixture on Billboard’s Latin charts for most of the past half-decade, but he’s yet to score a major crossover onto the Billboard Hot 100. That may be coming soon with the sweet reggaetón jam “Lala,” which is the penultimate cut on his 23-track March album La Vida Es Una. The song has taken over TikTok in the past month with its addictive title hook, a super-sticky backing vocal that plays throughout most of the song. 

The song has come to soundtrack both a dance challenge and a series of CapCut videos, with over 1.4 million videos being made to the official sound. Consequently, the song has absolutely exploded on streaming, jumping from 206,000 U.S. official on-demand audio streams for the chart week ending June 22 to over 2.6 million for the week ending July 6 – a gain of 1,172% over the two-week span, according to Luminate.

With the song’s upward trajectory continuing this week – debuting at No. 26 on this week’s Billboard Global 200, and even rising to No. 1 on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global chart – “Lala” may be on pace to announce itself as a very late song of the summer contender. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

Read Ahead: A Release Calendar of Music Books & Biographies Being Published in 2023

In the upcoming chapters of 2023, quite a few promising page-turners are expected to hit the “Music” shelf in a bookstore near you.

Spanning all genres and time periods, the second half of this year holds dozens of commentaries, historical deep dives, juicy biographies and more music-related volumes in store. So whether you’re in need of a rainy day read, beach suntanning entertainment or a before-bed future bestseller, Billboard has rounded up a list of upcoming books fit for even the most casual of music fans to pour over in the coming months – and it’s bound to have something you’ll love.

Take Britney Spears‘ memoir The Woman In Me, for example. One of the most anticipated memoirs of all time (with a price tag of $15 million), Spears announced that the autobiographical project would finally arrive in October just three months ahead of time. And speaking of highly anticipated memoirs, Barbra Streisand‘s My Name Is Barbra finally has a November release date, after years of delay. The book, which will detail the Broadway icon’s astronomical career, has been in the making since 2015.

Plus, look out for books by or featuring words from such other legends as Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Reba McEntire, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Jeff Tweedy on the list below. Kaytranada Talks Early Inspirations, Collaborative Project With Aminé & More | On the Record

In the first installment of Billboard’s new series On the Record, Kaytranada reflects on the origins of his sound, sharing the rich history of acts that his family introduced to him. Elsewhere in the discussion, the Haitian-Canadian hitmaker speaks about leaning into “the idea of different” when it comes to creating music and his collaborative project with Aminé.

Kaytranada:
I think memories and a song can go hand in hand. I feel like I’m doing the same to a lot of my fans, trying to create memories with my music.

My music really evolved, it doesn’t really sound like what people call “the Kaytranada sound.” It’s very hip-hop, but it’s still electronic house and R&B, it’s like, all those genres. And I just added swing, you know, like, keep the funk alive.

Growing up, my dad used to play a lot of, like, Haitian music, Compas music, where there’s, like, the old ones, or the recent ones, he was, like, playing a lot. We had a big sound system in our house, so music was always something important, you know. Then, it came to my sisters and they were playing, you know, a lot of like hip-hop, like, Jill Scott, Jay Z.

Rock music was something that was very, there like Linkin Park.

When it comes to me, it’s definitely like a combination of, like, you know, what I grew up listening to outside of Haitian music. But then when I got a little bit older, I just incorporate that more. And it felt like I took it for granted because I was not loving it because, you know, my parents were like, “Why don’t you listen to that? Why don’t you listen to that?” And I’m like, “Man, get out!” You know, but then, like, you hear something like “4EVA,” which is heavily Compas influence.

Playboi Carti Plots Global Antagonist Tour: See the Dates

Playboi Carti announced his upcoming fall and winter Antagonist Tour on Wednesday (July 12), which his Opium label signees Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely and Homixide Gang will be joining. The tour marks their first time hitting the road as an Opium collective.

The Antagonist Tour also marks Carti’s first headlining tour since 2021’s Narcissist Tour, when he played in support of his Billboard 200-topping album Whole Lotta Red, which was released on Christmas Day 2020 via Interscope Records and A$AP Mob‘s label AWGE. The 38-date trek — which includes dates in the U.S. and Europe — follows Carti’s multiple festival headlining performances at Rolling Loud California in March, Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash in June and Wireless Festival just last week.

Carti was recently featured on “Popular” with The Weeknd and Madonna, which was released in support of The Weeknd’s HBO series The Idol. “Popular” peaked at No. 14 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, Carson’s most recent album, X, earned the rapper his first entry on the Billboard 200 when the project reached No. 115. Destroy Lonely released his critically acclaimed debut album If Looks Could Kill in May; it reached No. 4 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 18 on the Billboard 200. Atlanta rap duo Homixide Gang released mixtapes Homixide Lifestyle in 2022 and Snot or Not in 2023. 

The pre-sale begins today at noon local time (U.S.) and 5 p.m. (E.U.) on Carti’s website, while general onsale begins Friday, July 14, at noon local time (U.S.) and 5 p.m. (E.U.).

Carly Rae Jepsen Reveals ‘The Loveliest Time’ Album Release Date

A year after unveiling her 2022 album, The Loneliest Time, Carly Rae Jepsen isn’t stopping just yet.

The pop superstar revealed on Wednesday (July 12) that her new album, The Loveliest Time, will be arriving on July 28 via 604/Schoolboy/Interscope Records. Jepsen revealed the cover art on Instagram while announcing the news, in which the 37-year-old singer is seen dressed in a gold two-piece set, as she leans against a dark ledge.

The 12-track album will feature the recently released, James Ford-produced single “Shy Boy,” as well as a collection of songs that were born in isolation. For the project, Jepsen enlisted a team of her trusted musical collaborators including John Hill, Patrik Berger, Rostam Batmanglij, Kyle Shearer and more.

“I got to know loneliness and discover the beauty in it,” Jepsen captioned an Instagram photo previously announcing the album title. “The loneliest time taught me that growth comes from being planted in darkness. But now the world has opened itself back up again and in turn so have we. It’s time for celebration and for all the lessons we have learned to burst into joyful action.

Her previous release, The Loneliest Time, was released on Oct. 5. The set peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard 200 and became her fourth top 40 album on the chart.

YOASOBI’s “Idol” adds another week to its record stay atop the Billboard Japan Hot 100, dated July 12, dominating the chart for its 13th consecutive week.

While overall points for the Oshi no Ko opener is on the wane, it continues to rule streaming, video views and karaoke for the seventh straight week and still boasts nearly double the points of the track at No. 2, “Candy Kiss” by Travis Japan.

YOASOBI Shares New English Version of Hit Single ‘Idol’: Watch the Video



“Idol” is now tied with “Subtitle” by Official HIGE DANdism for most weeks at No. 1 on the Japan Hot 100, and could be on its way to breaking the all-time record next week.

Travis Japan’s 3rd digital single “Candy Kiss” debuts at No. 2 on the Japan Hot 100. The single went on sale July 3 and launched at No. 1 for downloads with 46,077 units thanks to download campaigns on various platforms, and also racked up 3,985,321 streams (No. 18). The track also comes in at No. 19 for radio airplay and No. 55 for video.

SKE48’s “Suki ni nacchatta” bows at No. 3 with a difference of only 52 points between “Candy Kiss.” The track rules sales with 436,514 copies sold and also hits No. 3 for radio.

Another debut on the Japan Hot 100 top 10 this week is “Ao no Sumika” by Tatsuya Kitani, the opener of the TV anime Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 that began airing July 6. The track debuts at No. 8, coming in at No. 2 for downloads with 23,205 units and No. 23 for streaming with 3,789,286 streams, off to a good start before its physical release on July 19.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, audio streams, radio airplay, video views and karaoke data.

Zayn Malik Addresses Fight With Gigi & Yolanda Hadid for the First Time Since 2021

For the first time since it happened, Zayn Malik has spoken about his explosive falling out with Gigi and Yolanda Hadid.

For the most part, the former One Direction star has remained tight-lipped about the fall 2021 altercation with the 59-year-old Hadid matriarch, which ended with Malik pleading “no contest” to four counts of harassment. Other than posting a blanket statement on social media about the incident days after it became public, he hasn’t said a word — until now.

In a candid interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Malik reflected on the dispute and opened up about why he chose at the time to plead “no contest,” which is the equivalent of a guilty plea that does not actually admit guilt. “I knew what the situation was, I knew what happened and the people involved knew what happened too,” the “Pillowtalk” singer said on the Wednesday (July 12) episode.

“And that’s all I really cared about,” he continued. “If anybody of the same mind would look at the situation, I believe that you could respect that I just didn’t want to bring attention to anything. I just wasn’t trying to get into a negative back and forth with her — any sort of narrative online where my daughter was going to look back and be able to read into it and it would just be something, there was no point.”

Before the fight, which went down at the family’s Pennsylvania home, Malik and the Victoria’s Secret model had dated on and off for six years. In 2020, the ex-couple welcomed their now 2-year-old daughter Khai, and Malik noted on Call Her Daddy that he and Gigi now have a “really good relationship” as co-parents.

At the time, however, things were not so rosy between the two. In a police report, Malik was accused of hurling insults at Gigi — telling her to “strap on some f—ing balls and defend your partner against your f—ing mother in my house” — and grabbing Yolanda and shoving her into a dresser. He was also alleged to have called Yolanda a “f—ing Dutch slut” and demanded that she “stay away from [my] f—ing daughter.”

Jamie Foxx and Colin Firth to Produce First-Ever Documentary on Luther Vandross

Jamie Foxx and Colin Firth are teaming up to celebrate one of the greatest voices in R&B history. Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division announced on Tuesday (July 11) that Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions and Firth’s Raindog Films are teaming up for the first-ever full-length authorized documentary on late singer Luther Vandross.

Production has already begun on the film, with award-winning director Dawn Porter (The Ladybird Diaries) helming the doc that will follow the “A House Is Not a Home” singer “as he charted his own course becoming one of the most decorated and influential pop artists of all time.”

According to a statement, the film, which is being produced in partnership with Trilogy Films and the Vandross estate — and estate partner Primary Wave — has the full support and participation of the late singer’s closes friends and family, with access to his never-before-seen personal archive. “The film will capture the intensely private Grammy-winning artists’ passion for music, global rise and personal struggles,” the release promised.

Eight-time Grammy winner Vandross died in July 2005 at age 54 from complications of a stroke he suffered in 2003. “Luther is one of our GOAT’s” said Foxx in a statement about the singer who was nominated for 33 Grammys over the course of his career. “He’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. It is truly an honor to be a part of the team to help bring this incredible story to the masses.”  

After singing back-up vocals for Bette Midler, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, David Bowie and Diana Ross in the 1970s, Vandross launched his celebrated solo career in 1981 with the album Never Too Much, whose title track became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard R&B chart. While continuing to write and produce hits for artists including Dionne Warwick and Ross, Vandross broke through from the R&B charts to the pop charts in the late 1980s and 1990s thanks to hits including the Grammy-nominated “Power of Love,” the Janet Jackson duet “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” the Mariah Carey collab on a cover of “Endless Love,” as well as his 2003 song of the year Grammy-winning ballad “Dance With My Father.”

“Like so many, I have always loved Luther’s music, but I had no idea of the breadth and scope of his artistry,” said director Porter, whose other films include the 2002 doc about late U.S. congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis (John Lewis: Good Trouble). “I think people will be surprised at how much he accomplished in his tragically short life. It is a joy to be able to share his true story.”  A release date for the film had not been announced at press time.

2023 Primetime Emmy Nominees in the 7 Music Categories: Complete List

Adam Blackstone, who won his first Primetime Emmy last year for outstanding music direction for his work on the Super Bowl Halftime Show, has double nominations in that category this year. He is nominated as music director of the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall Fame Induction Ceremony and as one of two music directors on The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna (his co-nominee is Omar Edwards).

Two other past winners in that same category, Greg Phillinganes and Rickey Minor, are also nominated again. Phillinganes, who won in 2015 for Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life – An All-Star Grammy Salute, is nominated for his work on another salute to a music legend – Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song: Joni Mitchell. Minor, who has won twice in the category, for Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America and the Kennedy Center Honors, is nominated for The Oscars.

The nominations were announced on Wednesday (July 12). The awards will be presented on Monday Sept. 18.

Pop music titans Ed Sheeran and Max Martin were nominated, along with Foy Vance, for outstanding original music and lyrics for “A Beautiful Game,” which they wrote for an episode of Ted Lasso. A second song from that series, “Fought & Lost,” was nominated in that same category. It was co-written by Tom Howe, Jamie Hartman and Sam Ryder.

Nicholas Britell has two of the five nominees for outstanding music composition for a series (original dramatic score). He is up for his work on Andor and Succession. Britell is also nominated for outstanding original main title theme music for Andor.

Nora Felder, last year’s winner for outstanding music supervision for Stranger Things, is nominated again in that category for her work on that buzzy series.

Danny Elfman has two nominations for his work on Wednesday. He is nominated for outstanding music composition for a series (original dramatic score) in tandem with co-nominee Chris Bacon and for outstanding original main title theme music.

Laura Karpman has two nods for her work on Ms. Marvel. She is nominated for outstanding music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special (original dramatic score) and outstanding original main title theme music.

The 75th Emmy Awards will telecast live coast-to-coast from Los Angeles on Monday, Sept. 18, (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/5:00-8:00 p.m. PT) on FOX. Emmy winners Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon and Emmy nominee Jeannae Rouzan-Clay of Jesse Collins Entertainment will executive produce the show.
