Trippie Redd Announces New Album ‘A Love Letter to You 5’

Trippie Redd fans just keep on eating. The Billboard 200-topping rapper is set to release A Love Letter To You 5, his new studio album, on August 4. The new release marks the fifth entry in the rapper’s Love Letter series, and the first since 2019’s A Love Letter To You 4. Details regarding the new album are scarce, but Trippie shared the record’s official artwork on his Instagram and Twitter pages.

A Love Letter To You 5 is the second full-length release of the year for Trippie Redd. The Sky Morales-featuring “Took My Breath Away,” which Trippie released last month (June 16), is set to appear on the tracklist for the new record. In January, the rapper surprised fans with Mansion Musik, a sprawling 27-track mixtape. The project debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, his seventh consecutive top five debut, and featured collaborations with Travis Scott, Rylo Rodriguez, Future, Lil Baby, Ski Mask the Slump God, and more. Trippie later revealed that he was forced the rush-release the project because all of the tracks were being “held for ransom” by unidentified hackers.

Trippie Redd has landed nine titles on the Billboard 200, seven of which reached the top five dating back to 2018’s Life’s A Trip. He has also sent four projects to No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. On the Billboard Hot 100, the rapper has earned 35 entries, reaching as high as No. 11 with 2021’s “Miss the Rage” (with Playboi Carti). Recently, Spotify named Trippie Redd as one of the 50 most-streamed rappers in the platform’s history.

Faster Than a Speeding Shopper! More Powerful Than Casual Streamers! Superfans!

In January, three months before Reservoir Media put rap group De La Soul’s first six albums on streaming services for the first time, the company began taking pre-orders for reissues of classic albums like 3 Feet High and Rising and De La Soul is Dead, as well as De La Soul merchandise. The rap legends’ recordings came to Reservoir Media through its 2021 acquisition of Tommy Boy Music. Negotiations with Tommy Boy owner Tom Silverman over taking the albums to streaming services had stalled in 2019 over a royalty dispute — but not only did Reservoir quickly hash out a deal with De La Soul to reintroduce the world to its Tommy Boy catalog, it also planned a marketing campaign with the group to create exclusive merchandise and launch a slate of LPs, CDs and cassettes.

Selling directly to De La Soul’s biggest fans has meant 30% of its physical product sold worldwide has gone through the group’s website, wearedelasoul.com, says Rell Lafargue, Reservoir Media COO/president. In the process, Reservoir was able to tap into a consumer group of rising importance in today’s music business: superfans. “Twenty percent of wearedelasoul.com customers are repeat customers in just the first six months of the store opening,” says Lafargue, “and we see superfans fill their carts with multiple copies and color variants of vinyl, shirts, hoodies and more at check out.”

De La Soul fans are part of a trend shaping the U.S. music business in 2023: Superfans’ purchases of CDs, LPs and cassettes to help support their favorite artists helped drive increases in all physical formats in the first six months of the year, according to Luminate’s 2023 midyear report released Wednesday (July 12).

Luminate says 15% of the general population is made up of superfans — a group of passionate music consumers with a propensity for discovering new music, connecting with artists on a personal level and being part of a community, or “fandom,” that artists provide. They’re valuable, too: Superfans spend 80% more money on music each month than the average U.S. music listener.

While the average consumer may subscribe to a streaming service, stream for free or listen to the radio, superfans purchase physical formats like it’s 1999. Buyers of CDs, vinyl LPs and cassettes are 128% more likely to be super fans, according to Luminate. They also skew young. U.S. millennials and Gen Z music listeners spend 22% and 13% more on music than the average music listener.

The power of superfans helps explain why U.S. physical album sales improved drastically in the first half of the year. Vinyl LP sales were up 21.7% through June 30 — well above the 1% gain in the prior-year period — and CD album sales grew 3.8%, a huge improvement from the 10.7% decline a year earlier.

Direct-to-consumer sales increased 20% to 4.4 million units, with vinyl sales specifically improving 25% to 3.6 million units and CD sales growing 15% to 1.7 million. Over 60% of direct-to-consumer sales are current releases — defined as titles 18 months or younger. That number rises to 75% for direct-to-consumer sales for both CDs and cassettes.

Golda Bitterli, vp of sales at Revelator, maker of a technology platform for labels and distributors, attributes the trend to the fans’ access to artists online, particularly on social media. “Fans are becoming more active participants in the artist’s career, including involvement in the creative process like we see on TikTok, as well as direct access to artists through platforms like Telegram,” she says. “This gives the fan a greater sense of connection and stock in the artist’s career and leads to more consumption through streaming, downloads, ticket sales and more.”

K-pop superfans are in an entirely different category. According to Luminate, K-pop fans spend 75% more on music than the average U.S. music listener, with much of that spending going to physical products. K-pop fans are 46% more likely to have purchased a CD in the last 12 months, while almost a quarter have purchased a cassette in the past 12 months.

K-pop superfans are on a different level of fandom than the typical fan, organizing and supporting their favorite artists at levels rarely seen elsewhere in music. They buy multiple copies of albums, snap up merchandise and purchase the clothing artists are seen wearing on social media, says Kristine Kim, GM of Korea for business-to-business platform Surf Music. In Korea, fans will even rent out cafes to gather with other fans and purchase billboards to wish their favorite artists a happy birthday. “The investment, the time investment, the energy that they put in — emotionally, physically — and the money that they put in, it’s pretty incredible,” says Kim.

In the United States, superfans’ influence can be seen in the uptick in album sales in the first half of the year. K-pop albums, usually made available in multiple versions and formats so superfans can buy more than one copy, accounted for six of the top 10 physical albums and 16 of the top 50 physical albums, according to Luminate. The only artist to outsell K-pop artists Tomorrow X Together, Stray Kids, TWICE and Seventeen was Taylor Swift, who replicated the K-pop approach by offering over 20 different versions of her album Midnights.

For the upper strata of superfans, buying albums goes beyond merely collecting items or listening to music. “What drives these fandoms and CD sales is they just want to support the artists,” says Kim.

A new surprise exhibit dedicated to highlighting the impact of Jay-Z has debuted at the Brooklyn Public Library, complete with his lyrics adorning the building.

The new exhibit, titled The Book of HOV, made its debut to the public officially on Friday (July 14). “He navigated the gritty streets of Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects to the halls of Roc Nation, and now he shines as one of the brightest stars in our constellation. With his rhymes sharper than a knife and beats hotter than a summer in the city, JAY-Z is a beacon of hope for those who dare to dream beyond the confines of their circumstances,” said a statement from the exhibit’s website.

The exhibit is styled like chapters in a book and spans the entirety of the main branch of the library, with lyrics from “Justify My Thug” and “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” decorating the curved facade of the building’s main entrance to greet visitors. Inside, there are various installations showing off memorabilia from the rap icon’s career including a down-to-the-detail full-scale recreation of the place where Jay-Z recorded many of the hits he’s known for, Baseline Recording Studios. Other parts of the exhibit feature turntables that play vinyl records containing his hits and the samples that helped to create them and one area that encourages young visitors to craft paper planes in homage to one of his companies.

Chief executive of the Brooklyn Public Library, Linda E. Johnson, worked closely with Sandra Perez, the president of Roc Nation to make the exhibit come alive. That includes Roc Nation footing the entirety of the bill for it, including a donation to a gala in October at the library where Jay-Z and his mother, Gloria Carter, will be honored. “People thought I was a little out of my mind,” Johnson said when interviewed. “I don’t think I’d be going out on a limb to say that this is the biggest exhibition we’ve ever done.” There will also be 13 limited edition library card variations based on each of Jay-Z’s albums available for those who sign up.

“The Book of HOV” will be on display throughout the rest of the summer. More information can be found on its website.

Hollywood Shutdown: Actors Join Writers On Picket Lines After SAG-AFTRA Declares Double Strike

SAG-AFTRA Votes To Strike & Join The WGA On Picket Lines

Hollywood is officially shut down after actors joined the writers on the picket line following SAG-AFTRA unanimously voting to strike against TV and film companies for only the second time in Hollywood history.

Spotted on Variety, actors will officially join the picket line at midnight Friday, meaning they cannot attend any premieres, participate in junkets for completed projects, attend award shows, or even tweet about their films, per guidelines.

“Union members should withhold their labor until a fair contract can be achieved,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator of SAG-AFTRA, told the room of SAG actors and journalists. “They have left us with no alternative.”

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said during a Thursday press conference “We are being victimized by a very greedy enterprise. At some point you have to say ‘No, we’re not going to take this anymore. You people are crazy. What are you doing? Why are you doing this?’”

Streaming Networks & Artificial Intelligence Are At The Root of The Issue

In her plea, the Nanny actress focused on streaming networks and the rise of artificial intelligence as the blame for the fall of the current business model.

“If we don’t stand tall right now, we are all going to be in jeopardy. You cannot change the business model as much as it has been changed and not expect the contract to change too,” she said. “I cannot believe … how [the studios] plead poverty, that they are losing money left and right when they give hundreds of millions to their CEOs. It is disgusting. Shame on them.”

Following recent comments from Disney CEO Bob Iger, where he accused the actors and writers of being “unrealistic” due to their demands, Drescher let the chopper spray, saying, “If I were that company, I would lock him behind doors & never let him talk to anybody about this.”

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios, clapped back, saying it offered a proposal that offered “historic pay and residual increases, substantially higher caps on pension and health contributions, audition protections, shortened series option periods, and a groundbreaking AI proposal that protects actors’ digital likenesses for SAG-AFTRA members.”

In a statement following the approval of the motion to strike, the AMTP said, “A strike is certainly not the outcome we hoped for as studios cannot operate without the performers that bring our TV shows and films to life,” adding, “The Union has regrettably chosen a path that will lead to financial hardship for countless thousands of people who depend on the industry.”

The WGA & SAG-AFTRA Are Standing In Solidarity In Hopes For Drastic Changes

In a statement from the already striking WGA negotiating committee says it stands “solidly behind our union siblings in SAG-AFTRA as they begin their work stoppage.”

Adding, “The last time both of our unions struck at the same time, actors and writers won landmark provisions that we all continue to benefit from today – residuals and pension and health funds.”

The last time there was a “double strike” with actors and writers was in 1960. At the time, Ronald Reagan led the Screen Actors Guild as actors and writers argued for better compensation during the dawn of television.

Now it’s the rise of streaming television which both unions argue made it difficult for middle-class to earn livable wages, and the rise of artificial intelligence threatening to take away work from both writers and actors.

Hollywood Quickly Responds

The effects of SAG-AFTRA agreeing to strike were felt instantly. The cast of Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, Oppenheimer, left the UK premiere to join the picket line.

Xolo Maridueña, the star of James Gunn’s upcoming  DCU superhero film Blue Beetle announced via Twitter he would not be promoting the movie due to the strike.

Also, after seeing plenty of new set photos from Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Deadpool 3, production has stopped because of the strike.

This news is sad, but we are all about the actors and writers getting compensated fairly for their work.

As Threads Continues To Eat Twitter’s Food, Elon Musk’s App Is Now Paying Some Content Creators

HipHopWired Featured Video

Elon Musk and Twitter are starting to look a little desperate as Threads continues to gain in popularity. Twitter is now dishing out payments to some content creators still on the platform.

Spotted on Engadget, Twitter’s “ad-revenue sharing program for creators” is a go, with some eligible Twitter Blue subscribers allegedly already getting a piece of that ad-revenue sharing pie in the form of payments.

The timing of the program’s rollout is quite convenient, but Phony Stark, aka Elon Musk, did tease the idea of the program in February while sharing as few details about how it will work. Some users have been sharing notifications from the platform informing them that payments are on the way.

One user shared that he received a $24,000 deposit based on the ads in the user’s replies.

Basically, the initiative is a way to keep popular content on Twitter and, at the same time, get more users to sign-up for the still very unpopular Twitter Blue subscription service.

But unfortunately, the program is only for Twitter users with at least five million post impressions in the past three months, and they must also be approved by a human moderator while adhering to Twitter’s Creator Subscriptions policies. Twitter will administer the payments through a Stripe account.

Twitter says it will soon drop an application process found under the Monetization hub in the account settings.

Twitter’s “Ad-Revenue Sharing Program Is Already Looking Suspicious

It hasn’t been three days, and Elon Musk’s “ad-revenue sharing program for creators” is already looking really shaky. The Washington Post reports that far-right influencers on the platform, including Andrew Tate, were first on the list to receive payments.

Per The Washington Post:

The first beneficiaries appear to be high-profile far-right influencers who tweeted before the announcement how much they’ve earned as part of the program. Ian Miles Cheong, Benny Johnson, and Ashley St. Claire all touted their earnings.

“Wow. Elon Musk wasn’t kidding. Content monetization is real,” tweeted an anonymous account called End Wokeness, with 1.4 million followers, accompanied by a screenshot showing earnings of over $10,400.

So far, many of the influencers who have publicly revealed that they’re part of the program are prominent figures on the right. Andrew Tate, for example, who was recently released from jail on rape and human trafficking charges, posted that he’d been paid over $20,000 by Twitter.

Again, this sounds like a desperate ploy to keep folks tweeting. We shall see how this works out for Musk and his platform.

Paramount+’s New Doc ‘Mixtape: The Movie’ Features Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, Fabolous & More

Before the Internet took over the music game and streaming platforms became king, the street mixtape reigned supreme and all of your favorite rappers knew that was the best way to get their name out there and keep the block (and their careers) hot.

Now, Paramount+ is ready to debut a new film which centers around the mixtape game and the impact it had on the Hip-Hop culture. On Aug. 1, Paramount+ will give us OG Hip-Hoppers something to appreciate when they debut the Omar Acosta directed documentary, Mixtape: The Movie, which delves into the origins of the beloved Hip-Hop mixtape and the careers it made along with the fallout it produced thanks to money hungry music executives.

Featuring interviews from some of Hip-Hop’s biggest names such as Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, DJ Drama and KRS-One among many others, the documentary highlights just how impactful mixtapes were to the careers of up-and-coming rap stars along with rap superstars who used the mixtape scene to break new records that radio stations wouldn’t spin.

The doc will also get into how authorities got involved in the downfall of the mixtape game and ultimately screwed up a once thriving portion of the Hip-Hop game. DJ Drama recalled, “I’m being arrested for bootlegging and racketeering… It definitely made me more famous than I ever was.” Well, at least it helped his popularity, but authorities did seize all of his mixtape CD’s with no intentions of giving them back.

For those who don’t know, mixtape DJ’s used to make bank back in the day depending on what records they were able to break and who would break it first. Heck, mixtape popularity is what got 50 Cent back in the limelight and led to his million dollar deal with Shady Records in 2003. It really was an amazing time to be alive in the Hip-Hop culture.

Check out the trailer for Mixtape: The Movie below, and let us know if you’ll be checking it out when it hits Paramount+ Aug. 1.

KRS-One & Senator Charles Schumer Honor 1520 Sedgwick In The Bronx

It's Time For Hip Hop In NYC: The Bronx

As Hip-Hop celebrates its 50th anniversary, KRS-One and Senator Charles Schumer reflect on their efforts to preserve its birthplace in the Bronx.

The apartment building where DJ Kool Herc threw the first party that gave birth to the culture of Hip-Hop in 1973 has seen that culture go global and change numerous lives. But the status of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue was itself in limbo until the efforts of Senator Charles Schumer and Representative Jamaal Bowman, aided by KRS-One and others, led to a Congressional resolution declaring the building as the birthplace of Hip-Hop in 2021.

“Hip-hop culture has transcended language, race, and age in addition to geographic and socioeconomic barriers,” the Senate majority leader and Brooklyn native said in a statement. “It is a uniquely American art form that has become a global cultural movement. As a proud New Yorker, I was honored to be able to work with hip-hop giants and advocates like KRS-One and DJ Kool Herc, to ensure the birthplace, 1520 Sedgwick Ave, was preserved and celebrated.”

For KRS-One, he felt that Sen. Schumer and Rep. Bowman “understood the importance of hip-hop and its rightful place in our national culture when he extended max effort to make sure this building wasn’t lost.” The legendary artist is bolstering the legacy of 1520 Sedgwick through an initiative launched this summer that will feature classes on the culture in addition to other community events and live performances held at the building. “Internationally, cultural phenoms birthplaces are regularly preserved and celebrated,” the “My Philosophy” rapper said in a statement before acknowledging that sites of Black culture in the U.S. haven’t had that consistent attention.

“The Community Room is now protected for future generations to appreciate. Many think of the room as a ‘sacred space,’” he continued. “Just the act of preserving the room serves as a reminder to all that they also have the ability to achieve their full potential.” KRS-One will be one of many artists celebrating Hip-Hop at 1520 Sedgwick on August 11th with a live concert. “It’s the birthday hip-hop deserves. Its spirit is larger and stronger now than ever before,” he stated.

Secret Service Says It’s Unable To Find Out Who Left A Bag Of Blow At The White House

HipHopWired Featured Video

For weeks, social media has been abuzz with conspiracy theories and rumors about who the culprit was that left a bag of cocaine in the White House (naturally Republicans pointed to President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden), and the Secret Service has finally let everyone know that it basically could’ve been anybody.

According to Deadline, the Secret Service has officially closed the case without any clear answers on who was responsible for leaving the nose candy behind for anyone to find. They’ve also stated that they couldn’t figure out who did it. Though far-right wing Republicans and MAGAts were quick to point to Hunter Biden as he’s had a history of drug abuse, the Secret Service said they couldn’t lift any prints or DNA off of the bag of blow.

Deadline reports:

The Secret Service said that the FBI’s laboratory results “did not develop latent fingerprints” and that “insufficient DNA” was found for investigative comparisons. “Therefore, the Secret Service is not able to compare evidence against the known pool of individuals” who may have accessed the area. Video surveillance footage also did not produce any leads.

“Without physical evidence, the investigation will not be able to single out a person of interest from the hundreds of individuals who passed through the vestibule where the cocaine was discovered,” the Secret Service said. “At this time, the Secret Service’s investigation is closed due to lack of physical evidence.”

We’re not gonna lie, it does seem suspect that neither the Secret Service nor the FBI were able to track down who left behind the bag of coke. We don’t know much, but we’d figure that someone who does cocaine isn’t slick enough to leave behind a bag with absolutely no fingerprints or DNA. They’re always touching their noses for Christ’s Sake! Now, if that is indeed the case, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was some MAGA Trumpian who planted the bag only to turn the spotlight on Joe Biden’s addiction-battling son for political purposes. It’s a dirty game out here, b.

What do y’all think about the situation? Is the Secret Service covering up for someone? Was the bag planted? Are you surprised that anyone in the White House does cocaine? We lowkey feel like more than half the people that work there be hitting the slopes. Remember when that piece of white rock shot out of Donald Trump’s nose while he was giving a press conference? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
