Foo Fighters & Alanis Morissette Pay Tribute to Sinead O’Connor With ‘Mandinka’ Cover

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl welcomed Alanis Morissette to the band’s stage this weekend at the 2023 Fuji Rock Festival at Japan’s Naeba Ski Resort. Together, they honored the late Sinead O’Connor with a live cover of “Mandinka,” which was an early single of O’Connor’s from her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra.

“Tonight we’re gonna do something that we’ve never done before with someone that we love very much,” Grohl told the crowd. “We want an old friend to come up and sing with us tonight for a very special reason.”

He introduced Morissette — who was also on the July 28-30 fest’s lineup — and gave her a hug when she joined the band on stage.

Morissette then dedicated their version of “Mandinka” to “a beautiful woman with high intelligence and deep empathy, way ahead of her time, who is no longer with us. This is for her.”

O’Connor died at age 56. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” her family said in a statement to the BBC on July 26.

Morissette was one of countless music artists to post condolences and share memories of the singer upon hearing the news of her death.

“Sinead was a profound inspiration to many,” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “And to me. Her passion, poetry, and unapologetic expression raised the bar on artistry and female empowerment. Her questioning of societal norms deeply influenced culture’s appreciation of female complexity. Her ability to vulnerably dwell on the small part of the bell-shaped curve was thought provoking, stirring and inspiring. I’m feeling empathy for Ireland, for the world, and for all of us who are saddened by this news.”

Madonna Thanks Her Kids & Friends for Their Support One Month After Hospitalization: ‘How Lucky I Am to Be Alive’

Madonna was thankful for the kindness of her loved ones when she was hospitalized and recovering from a bacterial infection last month.

The 64-year-old pop icon’s infection was “serious,” according to manager Guy Oseary, and landed her in the ICU for a few days.

“Love from family and friends is the best Medicine. One month out of the hospital and I can reflect,” Madonna wrote to fans on Sunday (July 30). She posted the update on her official social media accounts.

“As a Mother you can really get caught up In the needs Of your children and the seemingly endless giving,” said Madonna. “But when the chips were down my children really showed up for me. I saw a side to them I had never seen before. It made all the difference.”

She added, “So did the love and support from my friends.”

In her letter, Madonna described an incredible gift she received from manager Oseary while she was recuperating: “A Polaroid taken by Andy Warhol of Keith Haring wearing a jacket with Michael Jackson’s face painted on it. A perfect triangle of Brilliance.”

“I sobbed when I opened this gift because I realized how lucky I am to be alive. And how fortunate I am to have known these people and so many others who are also gone. Thank you @guyoseary for this gift! And Thank you to all my angels who protected me and let me Stay to finish doing my work!” she wrote.

In a video posted earlier in the week, the singer promoted the 40th anniversary celebration of her 1983 debut album and the song that helped boost her to global stardom, “Lucky Star.”

On the Thursday post she noted, “To be able to move my body and dance just a little bit makes me feel like the Luckiest Star in the world!”

Cardi B Throws Mic at Concertgoer Who Splashed Drink at Her Onstage

Cardi B got even with a concertgoer who tossed a drink at her during the rapper’s performance in Las Vegas on Saturday (July 29).

In a video circulating on social media, the 30-year-old hip-hop star is seen hurling a microphone at an unruly audience member after they splashed their beverage on her during a performance at Drai’s Beachclub.

Cardi was in the middle of delivering her hit song “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” — which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2017 — when the incident occurred. Afterwards, she retweeted a video of what went down. In the clip, the rapper seems surprised after being splashed by the liquid from the cup, but then turns angry and throws the mic at them while appearing to yell.

Cardi teamed up with her husband Offset on his new song “Jealousy,” which dropped Friday (July 28). The Migos rapper’s latest track sees him alongside Cardi dodging haters in a major kiss-off. “You offended when I be on defense/ They’re too worried ’bout me and my n—a/ You should worry ’bout the n—a yours sleep with, hmm,” she raps.

Cardi is the latest victim of a dangerous trend in which artists are being struck by objects while performing at concerts. In recent weeks, Drake called out a fan for throwing a vape on stage; Bebe Rexha was injured when a cell phone was hurled at her face; a fan tossed her dead mother’s ashes up onto P!nk’s stage; Kelsea Ballerini was struck by an object mid-song; someone sent a sex toy flying at Lil Nas X; and a mysterious object pelted Harry Styles near the eye and left him wincing in pain.

Spence Jr v Crawford

Terence Crawford demonstrated Saturday night (July 29) why he has garnered heavy respect in the welterweight division after defeating Errol Spence Jr. in a unification bout. In the win, Terence Crawford became the first undisputed welterweight champion of the world since 1986.

In front of a sold-out crowd at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., Terence Crawford and Errol Spence finally got their moment after negotiations stalled late last year for a unification match. The long-awaited match didn’t have the explosive back-and-forth fight fans expected but highlighted why Crawford is considered the best pound-for-pound boxer in the sport today.

Spence opened the fight in his usual fashion but from there, Crawford delivered crushing blows, flooring Spence in Round 2 and again in Round 7. Spence was never able to mount an offensive and each time he tried, Crawford was there to stop him.

In Round 9, Spence, already looking worse for wear, stopped throwing punches and Crawford unloaded big shots but the referee saw enough and stopped the match.

“Like I said before, I only dreamed of being a world champion,” said Crawford after the match as reported by ESPN. “I’m an overachiever. Nobody believed in me when I was coming up, but I made everybody a believer.”

Crawford walked to the ring with Eminem, who performed his massive hit “Lose Yourself” for the crowd. The tone was set early as the champion was beyond focused on his goal.

After the match, Spence congratulated his opponent and hoped they could run it back again. The pair also showed massive respect for one another in a moment of class from both fighters.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), fight fans reacted to Terence Crawford stopping Errol Spence Jr. in Las Vegas. Check out those reactions below.

“hi from the step sisters!” the real-life sisters wrote Saturday (July 29) on Instagram. They shared a series of photos and a backstage video from the night before at Levi’s Stadium that featured a look at their “Bejeweled”-inspired dresses. The trio guest-starred in Swift’s self-directed music video that was released in October.

“we literally filmed this on our way to stage,” Haim added in a caption on TikTok about Friday night’s hijinks.

“No Body, No Crime” has been a new Evermore-era song on the setlist since Haim joined the tour as an opening act. Swift and Haim debuted it live together on July 22 in Seattle. Their collab replaced “‘Tis the Damn Season” on the setlist.

Swift will play Levi’s Stadium again Saturday night before heading to Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium to wrap the North American leg of her tour with six concerts. Haim is among the opening acts for the remaining dates.

Hayley Williams Shares Health Update Following Paramore Concert Postponements: ‘A Week of Misery’

Hayley Williams is sharing an update on her health after rescheduling a handful of Paramore concerts due to an illness.

The 34-year-old singer-songwriter took to her Instagram Story on Friday (July 28) to pen an emotional letter to fans explaining why her band was recently forced to postpone four live dates in the United States.

“As you know, we postponed a handful of dates due to illness. We kick back up Saturday in Tulsa (!!!) after a week of misery, sadness, and bellyfuls of antibiotics and steroids,” Williams wrote, referring to the group’s July 29 concert at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. “For the record, we did not have food poisoning or a band-wide s— fest.”

Last Saturday (July 22), Paramore postponed their concert at San Francisco’s Chase Center just hours before it was slated to take place. The group later postponed additional dates in Seattle, Portland and Salt Late City due to an “illness within the touring party.” All of the concerts have been rescheduled for August.

“In all seriousness, this past week has been really tough,” the “Ain’t It Fun” singer continued in her post. “Nobody would know this but I started getting sick in Houston (non contagious) and muscled my way all the way through LA. Adrenaline is a wonder! But by the time the excitement and the nerves from all the LA shenanigans wore off, my body just gave out.”

Williams noted that touring has grown increasingly difficult with age.

“Touring is different at 34 than it was at 16, when leaving home felt like the greatest escape,” she wrote. “At this age, I have my own home life, a community, a dog, my sisters and the rest of my family who are getting older… Alf and I go on neighborhood walks with my elderly neighbor and her dog. It’s quite a lot to leave behind.”

The singer-songwriter continued, “But then, we get on stage for 2 hours and I see the world through this joyous, hopeful and wide-open lens. It’s a view I simply cannot get from home. And it’s very healing — especially as obsessed and addicted to the daily doom-scroll of local, national, and global news as I am.”

Williams concluded her post on an upbeat note, writing, “This tour has done my heart a lot of good. I couldn’t be more grateful for the faces I see the first few seconds after we walk onstage during the intro. Those people revive me, nightly.”

Paramore is touring in support of their sixth album, This Is Why, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in February. After their North American tour wraps on Aug. 13 in Salt Lake, the group will team up with Taylor Swift again for the European leg of her Eras Tour, which launches on May 9, 2024.
