Tory Lanez Sentenced to 10 Years In Prison for Megan Thee Stallion Shooting

Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday (Aug. 8) for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot, capping off three years of legal drama over the violent 2020 incident.

The long sentence for Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) comes after he was convicted in December on three felony counts over the incident, in which he shot at the feet of Megan (real name Megan Pete) during an argument after a pool party in the Hollywood Hills.

Handed down by Judge David Herriford, the sentence was much harsher than the probation sought by Lanez’s lawyers but less than the 13 years that prosecutors had requested. Neither Tory’s lawyers nor the DA’s office immediately returned a request for comment.

According to The Associated Press, Lanez pleaded for mercy ahead of the sentencing, asking Judge Herriford for probation or a minimal prison sentence: “If I could turn back the series of events that night and change them, I would,” he reportedly said. “The victim was my friend. The victim is someone I still care for to this day.”

“Everything I did wrong that night, I take full responsibility for,” he added.

For his part, Judge Herriford reportedly said it was “difficult to reconcile” the caring person described by Lanez’s supporters in statements delivered in court on Monday (Aug. 7) with the man who shot Megan: “Sometimes good people do bad things. Actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case.”

Tuesday’s hearing occurred nearly three years after the July 12, 2020, shooting, which happened as a driver was shuttling Lanez, Megan and her assistant and friend Kelsey Harris from a party at Kylie Jenner’s house. According to prosecutors, Megan got out of the vehicle during an argument and began walking away when Lanez shouted, “Dance, bitch!”, and proceeded to shoot at her feet.

Following the incident, Megan initially told police officers that she had cut her foot stepping on broken glass, but days later alleged that she had been shot. Lanez was eventually charged with the shooting in October 2022.

During the trial, Lanez’s lawyers made their best effort to sow doubt over who had pulled the trigger, painting a scenario in which Harris could have been the shooter. But a key defense witness offered confusing eyewitness testimony, and prosecutors pointed to an earlier interview in which Harris pinned the blame squarely on Lanez. Megan herself offered powerful testimony that Lanez had been the one to shoot her; neither Lanez nor the driver took the witness stand.

Ahead of sentencing, prosecutors had sought a 13-year sentence for Lanez, telling the judge Lanez had “waged a campaign to humiliate and re-traumatize the victim.” They said the rapper “not only lacks remorse” but also is “clearly incapable of accepting any responsibility for his own actions.”

In their own filing last week, Lanez’s lawyers asked the judge to sentence him to only probation. They maintained that he was innocent, but said that even if he had committed the crimes, that his punishment should be lessened in light of “childhood trauma” and “alcohol-use disorder.”

Following sentencing, Lanez can still appeal his conviction at a state appellate court. But such a challenge will face an uphill climb: In 2022, California appeals courts overturned a defendant’s guilty verdict in just 19% of cases.

The cannabis industry is undergoing a remarkable transformation, driven by the vision and creativity of innovative designers and creatives, leaders from across the industry who are revolutionizing cannabis consumption” she explained. “We are so excited to craft a space that harmonizes aesthetics, functionality, and sensory engagement, ultimately enhancing the journey of both seasoned cannabis enthusiasts and the cannabis-curious alike.”

The final step in the process for Raekwon and company is getting approval from the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission. According to their website the agency seeks to “establish and grow a responsible, regulated medicinal and recreational cannabis industry.”

The origins of National CBD Day start CBD company cbdMD according to National Day Calendar. The company declared August 8 as the day and it has been in existence since 2018. Megan Thee Stallion Details “Suffering” During Tory Lanez Hearing

Megan Thee Stallion related how much suffering she’s endured daily after being shot by Tory Lanez in a written statement read during his sentencing hearing.

On Monday (August 7th), Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta read a statement from the “Cognac Queen” rapper during the sentencing of Lanez in the courtroom. “Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,” the statement began. “Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.”

She asked that her absence from the courtroom not be perceived as a sign of indifference, writing that she struggled with trying to be present for the sentencing but decided that she “simply could not bring myself to be in a room with Tory again.” Megan Thee Stallion did ask Judge David Hereford to deliver a stiff sentence. She also pointed out that Lanez “has blamed the system, blamed the press, and as of late has tried to take advantage of his childhood trauma.”

Lanez, also known as Daystar Peterson, was convicted last year of three felonies – assault with a semiautomatic weapon, discharging a firearm with gross negligence, and having a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle. All charges stem from the 2020 incident where he shot Megan in her feet after the pair and a friend left a party at Kylie Jenner’s home in Hollywood Hills. Lanez faces up to 13 years in prison based on those charges.

Judge Herriford allowed the legal teams for the prosecution and the defense to argue every factor leading to the potential sentence. In doing so, the proceedings would go on for hours, with Lanez’s lawyers also providing statements and 76 letters including one from his six-year-old son defending the rapper and asking for leniency in light of his charitable work. The delay means that the sentencing hearing will resume on Tuesday (August 8th).

One of those letters was composed by Iggy Azalea, which garnered some controversy leading her to state that the letter was “for the judge only”. She also issued a lengthy post of clarification via Twitter. “I am not in support of throwing away ANYone’s life if we can give reasonable punishments that are rehabilitative instead. I support prison reform. Period,” she wrote.

Eminem Calls Out Donald Trump Brainwashing, MAGA Stans Triggered

Eminem has called out the hypocrisy and tone-deafness of Donald Trump’s core base of supporters. The all-time great rapper is calling out the irony of “middle-class” white people supporting an alleged billionaire who has never struggled a day in his life.

The man born Marshall Mathers started trending after a clip originally shared on the @Rising_path TikTok page on Monday, (August 7)  of him talking about Trump went viral. At the start of the video, the “Stan” rapper admits that talking Trump can get him “flustered” because he has so much to say about the guy—spoiler, none of it is good. Nevertheless, Em got to the point of why most people look at his most stringent supporters like they’re cult members rather eloquently.

“I just get flustered and frustrating watching him play to his base that thinks that he cares about them and it’s actually the people that he cares about the f*cking least,” said Em. “If you’re talking about his core being, ya know, a majority white middle class, what I don’t understand is how in the f*ck do you feel like you relate to a billionaire who has never known struggle his entire f*cking life?”

The question is rhetorical considering Em is spot on in noting the game Trump has been playing. He continued, “I will say this, he talks a good one. And if you’re in his base, let’s say you’re going to the rallies or whatever, you watch him on TV, you hear him talking this sh*t, there’s part of me that understands, like, Alright, he’s somehow still got them because he’s brainwashing them into thinking something great is going to happen. Nothing’s happening.”

Where is the lie?

Of course, the GOP and MAGA Stans who watched the video (we hope it’s not AI) are flustered themselves since, ya know, hit dogs will holla. See reactions to Em’s truth-telling in the comments.

Utopia blasted in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Aug. 12), marking the third-biggest week of 2023 for any album and the largest for any R&B/hip-hop or rap release. The project bows with 496,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 3, according to Luminate.

Additionally, all 19 songs from the set rank on the Hot 100, giving Scott a 111 total charted songs in his career. The rapper becomes just the 15th artist in the chart’s 65-year history to log 100-plus career entries on the survey.

How Dan + Shay Took an Emotional Barroom Journey With ‘Save Me The Trouble’

At the end of the first verse of the new Dan + Shay single, Shay Mooney’s voice cracks as he addresses a stunning woman in a bar, “I’m beggin’ you please.”

Mooney is a singer with enormous control, and his request isn’t for her to accompany him home; overpowered by the expectation that she’ll break his heart, the protagonist instead asks her to leave him alone. Mooney’s small vocal imperfection speaks loudly in the context of a blistering performance.

“I thought that line was really important to set up that chorus,” says the group’s Dan Smyers, who co-produced “Save Me the Trouble” with Scott Hendricks (Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn). “‘I’m begging you, please’ — that’s kind of you putting your fist on the table and saying, ‘I’m vulnerable. I’m defenseless.’

“Shay is the greatest singer to ever do it, you know. He’s my favorite singer I’ve ever heard. I’ve never heard him hit a sour note, and I’ve recorded a lot of his notes. But man, that line is great.”

“Save Me the Trouble,” which Warner Music Nashville released to country radio via PlayMPE on July 13, is an important single for the duo, the first since it experienced some inner turmoil, debated the future of the act, then refocused its energy on moving forward. It was so important that the pair set aside an entire day at Nashville’s Ocean Way to record the one song, which begins as a spare country track, reestablishes the duo’s powerful harmonies, then transforms into a pop symphony with a momentary touch of prog-rock drama before a stark, a cappella close.

“It just felt very adult. It felt very professional, but at the same time, very grassroots and very natural and genuine,” Mooney says of that session. “After the first time through, I was like, ‘Oh, my God. Damn. This is another level.’”

The foundation for that level was established Jan. 12 during a songwriting session at the East Nashville home studio of Jordan Reynolds (“Speechless,” “Tequila”), where they were joined by Ashley Gorley (“Last Night,” “Girl in Mine”) and Jordan Minton (“Best Thing Since Backroads,” “Good Time”). They set out to develop something that would provide a big concert moment, or a head-turning performance for an awards show.

“We definitely spent a lot of time that day figuring out what that kind of sonically would be for them,” says Minton. “Something that’s kind of big, anthemic, still feels like them — [with] fresh radio melodies that are really wide and big for Shay to sing.”

Smyers provided a title, “Save Me the Trouble,” that he had heard in a conversation, and they developed it as a barroom snapshot of a guy who recognizes the woman tempting him would only break his heart. They wrote the chorus first, in 6/8 time, using the title in the stanza’s opening line with drawn-out notes that allowed the duo to highlight its exacting harmonies. Halfway through the section, they changed pace with a rhythmic bounce, then reaffirmed the title twice more.

Mooney took the lead on the verse melody, pitching it in the bottom part of his range as they focused on the opening lines.“In that lower register, it gives you somewhere to go,” he says.

Gorley established key parts of the chord structure on piano and mapped out a general plot overview.
“He’s just so smart at knowing what a song needs and going, ‘All right, so we’ve got this in the chorus and the first verse; this is what the second verse should be about,’” says Reynolds about the veteran songwriter. “Everybody’s like, ‘Yeah, that is exactly what it needs.’ He introduces a great vibe and a knowledge and wisdom of songs, whether he is contributing a lot or a little.”

In verse two, they revisited the bouncy rhythmic idea, with Mooney changing the melody from the first verse in a way that temporarily reflected a cheery “just a little kiss” fantasy, before the protagonist remembers that this woman is a heartbreaker. “We always love doing that in the second verse: changing it a little bit just to give it somewhere to go,” Mooney says. “It’s not anything insane. It gives it enough [difference] that it’s something intriguing that you’re listening for the second time around.”

The song remains open-ended — it’s not clear whether the character takes the woman at the bar home — though the writers have an idea about it. “I think he does not,” says Minton. “I think the whole night is kind of in his head.”

Reynolds and Smyers worked on a demo when the song was finished, with Reynolds building out the instrumentals in the studio and Smyers editing vocals in a bedroom closet. “It’s a leftover closet for guitar cases and awards that I don’t know what to do with,” Reynolds says. “There’s stuff everywhere, and it’s not big, maybe four by five [feet]. It’s got shelves, so he just sets his laptop on a shelf, stands there and works, closes the door. I think it’s the most dead room in the house, but he’s never recording anything, so it doesn’t matter.”

Smyers felt enormous pressure when they brought it to the recording studio because “Save Me the Trouble” had so much potential. “I knew what it needed to sound like,” he remembers. “I could almost see the ProTools session laid out. I could see the knobs and levers in the mix, and I was like, ‘We just can’t screw it up.’”

The crew developed a gradually building production: “Every line, there’s one more thing kind of going on than the previous line,” says Smyers. Steel guitarist Russ Pahl overdubbed a winding, neo-synth sound underneath the prechorus in the first verse, and Smyers thickened the vocals by adding one harmony voice at a time. The bridge featured a pair of dramatic stops with a single cymbal clang by drummer Nir Z, plus thick harmonies, enhanced by some reverb effects that hint at the sound of a Black gospel choir.

“When you listen to the track as a whole, it feels a bit dangerous,” Smyers says. “I thought that was an important sonic pivot for us after coming off a couple of super-positive, major-sounding love songs in a row as singles. I felt like a little bit of danger, a little bit of angst, was the right pivot.”

“Save Me the Trouble” debuted at No. 21 on the Country Airplay chart dated July 29. It checks in at No. 27 in its third week.

“I love where it landed,” Smyers says. “It feels dramatic, and it feels intense. It’s gotten stuck in my head since the day we finished it.”

Russell Brand Says Marriage to ‘Amazing’ Katy Perry Felt ‘A Little Bit Chaotic’

It’s been more than 10 years since the world watched Katy Perry perform mere minutes after learning about the breakdown of her marriage to Russell Brand in her 2012 Part of Me documentary. Now, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star is reflecting on their marriage in a new episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge.

“Aside from my sort of feelings of affection for Katy, it’s a time that I remember as being a little bit chaotic and a bit for me, speaking for myself, a little disconnected,” Brand said. “That was when I was sort of most in the public eye and working in America… some aspects of [that time] were amazing.”

Perry and Brand married in 2010 and divorced 14 months later. The two seismic life events came in the midst of the most commercially dominant phase of Perry’s career. In 2010, she released Teenage Dream, her Grammy-nominated sophomore studio album, which spawned five Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles: “Firework,” “California Gurls” (with Snoop Dogg), “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “E.T.” (with Kanye West) and the title track. In 2012, the same year their divorce was finalized, Perry re-released the album as Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, earning an additional Hot 100 chart-topper with “Part of Me.”

“She’s an amazing person,” Brand told Grylls of the pop star. “It was kind of incredible to live for a moment in that eye-of-the-cyclone type aspect of fame.”

Last year, Brand starred in a trio of films, including Death on the Nile, Catherine Called Birdy and Minions: The Rise of Gru, which was the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2022. Perry recently announced the end of her Play Las Vegas residency, as well as plans for new music after taking some time to raise her 3-year-old daughter Daisy Dove Bloom.

Attendees of This Transylvania Dance Festival Have Donated Thousands of Gallons Of Blood in Exchange for Tickets

In Bram Stoker’s 1897 classic novel Dracula, the titular count consumes the blood of those who cross his path, using the substance to gain terrible strength and power.

Untold Festival, a dance music festival that’s happened in Romania’s Transylvania region annually since 2015, has used this regional vampire folklore to also gain power and give strength, but in this case for a very good cause.

With its Blood Network program, Untold has collected thousands of gallons of blood over the last eight years, with donations going to medical centers throughout Romania. In exchange for their blood, donors receive a complimentary day pass for the festival, the eighth iteration of which took place this past weekend (August 3-6), hosting roughly 420,000 attendees. The lineup featured more than 200 genre-spanning dance artists including Eric Prydz, David Guetta, Bebe Rexha, Amelie Lens and Tale Of Us, along with headliners including Armin van Buuren and Imagine Dragons.

“We thought, ‘What if we make a campaign based on the idea that vampires from Transylvania usually suck blood — but in this case they don’t suck blood, but [rather] donate it?’” Untold co-founder Edy Chereji tells Billboard.

From this simple, sanguine premise, Untold Festival launched their blood drive campaign in tandem with 2015’s debut festival. Initially called Pay with Blood, this Year One campaign got 1,500 Romanians to donate blood at transfusion centers around the eastern European country, which borders Hungary, Serbia and Ukraine. The mountainous, forested Transylvania region is in the heart of Romania, with Untold taking place at the Cluj Arena in the region’s metropolis city of Cluj-Napoca.

Beyond helping people, the campaign helped get the word out about the event, which upon its launch became Romania’s largest electronic music festival. It remains one of the only dance music festivals in the greater region, drawing fans from throughout Romania, along with Bulgaria, Moldavia, Ukraine, Albania and Greece. In 2016, Untold’s parent company, Untold Universe, launched a second event, Neversea, which takes place in the Romanian beach town of Constanța. A winter event, Massif, takes place in the ski town of Poiana Brasov, and Untold will launch another dance festival in Dubai next February.

But despite these national and international moves, Blood Network remains quite local. In its second year, Blood Network donors were able to give blood at both transfusion centers and via a mobile donation center that traveled around the country and which has since become a standard facet of the campaign. Donors can show up to this donation center on wheels, give their blood and immediately receive a free day pass for the fest.

Ahead of this year’s Untold, the caravan touched down in 12 Romanian cities between May and June. During this period, more than 5,000 donors gave more than 2,200 liters (roughly 580 gallons) of blood, with thousands of gallons also collected over previous years. Blood Network partners with doctors from Regina Maria Private Healthcare to coordinate these blood drives, with Regina Maria also receiving the collected blood.

While many dance events have charitable components, arguably few have the immediate effects of Blood Network, which isn’t just a festival marketing tool but a provider of life-saving blood in a country where it’s acutely needed. “Unfortunately, the donation in Romania is low, around 2% of Romanians donate blood,” says Ania Vladescu, Strategic Partnerships Manager at Romania’s Regina Maria Private Healthcare. “The Blood Network campaign created by Untold is very good, necessary and welcomed — it helps a lot.”

Vladescu estimates that over the last eight years, the campaign has gathered more than 37,000 donors, whose blood has helped and saved the lives of more than 100,000 people. She adds that blood donated by one person can save three lives.

“Anyone else who would have done such a campaign, anywhere in the world, would not have had the same trigger of authenticity as Untold, being a festival in the heart of Transylvania, the so-called land of Dracula,” Vladescu adds. “The vampire who normally sucks blood, this time invites you to donate blood to help people who suffer and save their lives.”
