You Care: Marcus Jordan Says He Is Not Engaged To Larsa Pippen, Reveals He Gave Her A Promise Ring

Wedding bells are not Marcus Jordan and Larsa Pippen’s future… yet.

Last week, the couple had social media buzzing after TMZ Sports caught them coming out of a restaurant. Jordan told the paparazzi they were “looking for a location” and had started the wedding process.

Now, it looks like that was nothing but the ultimate pump fake, with the couple throwing cold water on speculation they were close to tying the knot.

On a recent episode of their podcast, Separation Anxiety, Pippen said the ring she is sporting is a “promise ring” and not an engagement ring. Jordan added he was responding to the paparazzi in a “cheeky way.”

Per Page Six:

“We’re not engaged,” Pippen, 49, said. “But you did give me a promise ring.”

“I definitely gave you a promise ring,” Jordan, 32, replied, adding that marriage has been a topic of discussion for the couple but not a “priority.”

“The only thing we’ve come up with is that we want a destination wedding,” the reality TV star added.

The explanation comes after Pippen was first spotted with a diamond band on her left ring finger while leaving a West Hollywood restaurant with her beau last week.

Addressing the recent headlines, Jordan said, “Paparazzi got us leaving the restaurant and asked us if there were wedding plans in the works, and so, I think I responded in a cheeky way.”

Marcus Jordan’s Parents & Larsa Pippen’s Reacted To The Engagement Rumors

Despite the couple denying the wedding rumors, their families and friends both reacted to the news. “I had a hundred calls and text messages of people congratulating us,” Pippen said.

Jordan revealed he got multiple messages from his father, Michael Jordan, and his mother, Juanita Vanoy, who sent him “a bunch of eye emojis.”

What we would give to know exactly what Michael Jordan said to his son.

When asked if he approves of the couple, he flat out told reporters, “No!” he did not approve of the Trophy Room owner dating his former teammate, now enemy, Scottie Pippen’s ex-wife.

Speaking on the Basketball Hall of Famer’s comments, Larsa Pippen said “she was embarrassed,” noting his comments could result from his fractured friendship with his former teammate.

“I feel like for them, it probably is weird, Pippen began. “It probably is weird for your dad. I can’t be mad. I understand,” she added during a July episode of the couple’s podcast. “[But] oh my God, I was traumatized. I was like, ‘What are we going to do?”

What a messy situation this is.

John Legend & Chrissy Teigen Have a Date Night at Drake’s LA Concert: ‘Young Love!!’

Drake‘s concerts have hosted several celebrities so far, and John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are the latest A-listers to attend. On Monday night, the “All of Me” singer and his Cravings founder wife had a special date night at Drizzy’s Los Angeles show at Crypto.com Arena.

Teigen took to Instagram to share photos from their special night out, in which she posed alongside her EGOT-winning husband in a black leather column gown with a sheer, lace bust. Legend kept his look more casual, wearing a white T-shirt and ripped blue jeans, white sneakers and a decorated varsity jacket. “Young love !!” she captioned the post, which also featured a video from the show and her posing backstage with a flying prop.

She followed up the post with a video of her posing for solo pictures, and wrote, “Drake! I met the flying spermatozoa backstage! much smaller than I imagined but still very impactful.”

Teigen and Legend are far from the first celebrity guests who have attended the It’s All a Blur Tour. Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner had a date night of their own and packed on the PDA during the Aug. 13 concert of the tour, which caused them to make the rounds on social media. And Drake used Bunny’s attendance to make an announcement.

“I wanna tell y’all something, because y’all are L.A. and we love you,” Drake told the crowd during a brief break between songs. “It’s been like six years since me and Benito did a song, so we got a song coming for y’all on my album and it’s real.”

Oliver Anthony Music’s Rapid Rise, Drake’s Son Adonis Draws New Album Cover & More | Billboard News

Oliver Anthony Music topped the Hot 100 this week and we’re taking a look at his rapid rise and his controversial start. Drake’s son Adonis created the cover art for his new album ‘For All The Dogs.’ Flo Rida held a little fan while performing his hit song ‘Low.’ Echosmith siblings Sydney and Noah Sierota play Never Have I Ever. And more!

Tetris Kelly:
Oliver Anthony Music has listeners divided. Drake gets some help from his son on his new album. A baby at a Flo Rida concert is the talk of the internet. We learned five things about Erika Jayne and play Never Have I Ever with Echosmith.

Hey y’all, I’m Tetris Kelly for Billboard News. It’s Wednesday, August 23rd. And let’s talk about our current leader on the Hot 100.

Oliver Anthony seemingly came out of nowhere to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, but is he already becoming the rich man he sings about? And did he lose support from his right-wing fans already? We have his new music and everything that’s been going on with the soulful singer.

As “Rich Men North of Richmond” had its historic ride to the top of our charts, a lot of conversation happened online questioning if the song has a divisive meaning or is it just an anthem for the right. Well, Oliver has spoken on the topic.

Oliver Anthony Music:
“I mean, we are the melting pot of the world. And that’s what makes us strong, it’s our diversity and we need to learn to harness that and appreciate it and not use it as a political tool.”

Tetris Kelly:
Some conservatives have already turned on him, calling him a “scam” and accusing him of faking his accent. While others pointed out he never said he was conservative. I’m just confused about what’s even controversial about diversity.

And is he becoming a rich man? In his Hot 100-topping week, Billboard estimates he earned over $350,000 in royalties. On the heels of his history-making No. 1 viral hit, Oliver has dropped a video for his new single “I Want to Go Home.”

Selena Gomez, Drake & More Musicians Who Have Spoken Out About AI

Here are all the music stars who have spoken out about the growing technology.

Artificial intelligence has become a growing conversation among people in entertainment and beyond, as it becomes increasingly prominent in mainstream media, music and everyday life.

In music, AI has been taking over social media with soundalike tracks like “Fake Drake,” and companies are actively trying to figure out how to best protect their artists, copyrights and revenue streams as artificial intelligence in the entertainment sphere continues to grow.

However, there has also been a growing fear around artificial intelligence, and how it will impact safety and job security, as there is potential for AI-generated voice soundalikes to be used for sinister reasons or the efficiency of AI to take over jobs held by human beings.

Read Billboard‘s breakdown of how AI is affecting the music business here, and see our list of all the music stars who have spoken out about the technology below.

BMI Selling to Private Equity Firm for $1.7B

BMI has accepted an offer to sell to New Mountain Capital, a private equity firm that has been quietly looking at music assets over the last few years, according to sources. It’s unclear if the deal has been signed yet.

Sources suggest that New Mountain Capital will pay about $1.7 billion for BMI which claims $145 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in its first year acting as a for-profit entity, which was announced last October. That suggests that BMI — aka Broadcast Music Inc. — is trading on a nearly 12 times EBITDA multiple. Since BMI has no debt, it’s likely that New Mountain Capital will use a healthy level of debt to finance the deal.

According to New Mountain Capital’s website, the firm has $40 billion in assets under management and chases a “growth-oriented, value-add investment approach, rather than reliance on excessive risk, as the best path to high and consistent long-term returns.” The firm has made investments in such industries as software, business services, information and data, logistics and financial services among a few other sectors.

Besides New Mountain, sources say, bidders included Apollo Global Management, Brookfield Asset Management and its music investment Primary Wave, and RedBird Capital Partners. New Mountain and Brookfield/Primary Wave became the finalist, until BMI accepted New Mountain’s offer. Moreover, sources add that Moelis & Co. has been acting as an advisor to New Mountain while BMI has acknowledged that it hired Goldman Sachs to explore a strategic partnership.

BMI first put itself up for sale last year and at the time said it was switching from a not-for-profit operation to a for-profit company. In its fiscal 2022, before it switched to a for-profit entity, BMI reported that it collected $1.573 billion, while distributions totaled $1.471 billion. While the company has stated that the move is being made to benefit its affiliates and will allow the company to spend more money on developing technology and infrastructure so it can better services and songwriters, the strategy shift has caused consternation among songwriters and publishers.

Last week, a group of songwriters and creative advocates wrote a letter to BMI asking how such a move would benefit songwriters and questioning whether the profit would come at the expense of songwriter payments. The groups that signed the letter were Black Music Artists Coalition; Music Artists Coalition; Songwriters of North America; SAG-Aftra and Artists Rights Alliance.

Since its formation in 1940, BMI has been operating as a not-for-profit organization, paying out all of the money it collects to songwriters and publishers, even though it was a private company. In response to the songwriter and creator organization letter, BMI president Mike O’Neill said that because of its first year acting as a for-profit entity, it has allowed the company to upgrade its services portal, including new dashboards, among several other initiatives. He also said in pursuing a BMI sale, the company “would ensure that any partner embraces our mission of prioritizing the interests of songwriters, including their financial success.

BMI declined to comment for this story, and other firms mentioned didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment or couldn’t be reached.

Anghami Gets $5M Investment From Saudi Media Company SRMG

Abu Dhabi-based streaming company Anghami received a $5 million investment from the venture capital arm of the Saudi Arabia media company SRMG, the companies announced in a joint statement Monday (Aug. 21).

The largest publicly traded media company in the Middle East and North Africa region, SRMG is the publisher of Arabic and English-language international and business newspapers like Asharq Al-Awsat, Arab News and Aleqtisadiah. In June, SRMG partnered with Billboard to launch Billboard Arabia.

As the region’s most popular music streamer, Anghami has reported rapid growth since going public on the Nasdaq in early 2022 and said it expects to become profitable this year. With SRMG’s investment and appetite to be a destination for artists, the deal will “bolster Anghami’s growth trajectory through its extensive media reach, content library, and portfolio of leading assets in audio/podcasts,” according to the statement.

In March, Anghami said its revenue grew by more than 35% to $48 million in 2022, driven by a 21% year-over-year uptick in paid subscribers to 1.52 million, according to preliminary unaudited results. Anghami claims 120 million registered users overall.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remains one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors for music, with revenue from recorded music climbing by nearly 24% in 2022, according to the IFPI.

Founded in 2012, Anghami has expanded its business beyond streaming to include in-house productions, branded music and video content, concerts, podcasts and a record label for Arab artists.

Anghami CEO/co-founder Eddy Maroun called the investment a milestone for his company that will allow it to “unlock further opportunities to champion the music ecosystem.”

“We have continually evolved to meet our audience’s changing demands and support the region’s rising entertainment and music industry,” Maroun said in the statement. “This partnership will propel regional artists to greater heights, expand their global reach, and create new touchpoints for our users and artists alike.”
