Best of IFA 2023: Billboard’s Picks for Top Consumer Electronics

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

BEST RETRO SPEAKER

JBL Authentics 500

This portable speaker looks old-school, but both it and its little brothers, the “200” and “300,” are all-new inside, with audio technology like Dolby Atmos. This is the big boy, with three one-inch tweeters, two 2.75-inch mid-range woofers and a 6.5-inch down-firing subwoofer that deliver 270 watts of 3.1 channel sound – in immersive Dolby Atmos if the music warrants it. Like the 300, the 500 has nearly eight hours of battery life and can move from room to room on a single source of sound.

BEST SPEAKER THAT RUNS ON SUN

Urbanista Malibu

The aptly named Urbanista Malibu runs on sun — literally. After introducing over- and in-ear headphones, the company is now launching a Bluetooth speaker that can play until the sun goes down and well after. Its battery can store enough power to work for 30 hours. When the weather turns, it can charge with a USB-C cable — better performance than most similar products — and an IP67 water-resistance rating means it works in the rain.

BEST HOMETOWN HERO

Teufel Ultima 25 Aktiv

IFA has grown so big that some companies now organize their own events, including the Berlin audio company Teufel (which translates to “devil” in German), which shows new products in its headquarters in the center of what was formerly West Berlin. Among this year’s highlights were the Teufel Ultima 25 Aktiv speakers, which will sell for about $500, the powered counterpart to the popular Teufel Ultima 20 bookshelf speaker (a “passive speaker” that gets electricity, along with signal, from a speaker cable). The speakers even have HDMI output and input so video can play on a screen, but audio can “pass through” the TV and go to the speakers.

BEST SMALL SOUNDBAR

Sennheiser Ambeo Mini

Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Mini

Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Mini

After some tough years during the pandemic, the German audio company Sennheiser is coming back with an exciting addition to its soundbar portfolio, the AMBEO Soundbar Mini, which is designed for smaller rooms. Thanks to “7.1.4 virtualization technology,” the device creates a stunning 3D sound in virtually any room,” according to a statement by Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Product Manager Maximilian Voigt, “all from a single box.” It supports Dolby Atmos and can be paired with serious subwoofers if you’re ready to rumble. At about $800, it’s not the least expensive soundbar out there — but it could be the best for smaller spaces.

BEST MUSIC MOVEMENT

Sonos Move 2

Sonos Move 2

Sonos Move 2

Courtesy of SONOS

Sonos’ Move speakers were the first that could work with the brand’s systems over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and often topped lists of smaller speakers with serious sound. Now Sonos is making the Move 2 available with new colors, more battery life, and stereo functionality. Like Sonos’ Era speakers, they have a USB-C ports that, with the right adapter, can play music from a turntable or CD player — or play music from a phone while recharging it. But the biggest changes are in battery life, which now lasts up to 24 hours instead of 11, and the stereo functionality that comes from packing in two tweeters in each box.

Actress Megan Fox is bringing her talents to the world of video games and is the latest big name to join in on the fun that is Mortal Kombat 1.

Fresh off the release of the “It’s Your Blood Trailer” starring Dave Bautista, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games announced Megan Fox will be the voice and face of Nitara, the vampire heroine and latest main roster fighter coming to the fighting game.

In a statement about being a part of Mortal Kombat 1, Fox said, “I grew up playing Mortal Kombat, and I can’t believe that I’m voicing a character in the new game.” “It’s an honor to be a part of one of the greatest video game legacies of all time.”

As for Nitara, she first burst on the scene in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance; in those games, she is described as “self-serving” rather than an outright villain and fights to separate her realm from Outworld.

Per Warner Bros. Games, she “hails from the dark and desolate realm of Vaeternus, and fights to protect her race of vampires and utilizes her ferocious claws, razor-sharp fangs, and aerial abilities to take on any opponent in her path.”

What also remains the same is that Nitara still requires blood to live, and she is still a deadly foe.

The Fighters So Far In Mortal Kombat 1

Nitara joins Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, Kenshi, Smoke, Rain, Li Mei, Tanya, Baraka, Geras, Reptile, Ashrah, Havik, General Shao, Sindel, Nitara, and more who all have new backstories thanks to Fire God Lui Kang rebooting the timeline.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on Xbox Series S | X, PS5, and Nintendo Switch on September 19.

Tetris Kelly
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner call it quits. Drake shows off his bra collection and teases his new album. We look back at The Weeknd’s mini chart achievements. Jung Kook is set to perform in New York City while Anitta will join TXT. And we learned five things about (G)I-DLE. Welcome back to another episode of Billboard News, I’m Tetris Kelly, and it’s Wednesday September 6, we got a lot of fun stuff to get to but unfortunately, we have to start the show off on a sad note. After four years of marriage, Joe Jonas has filed for divorce from Sophie Turner.

Tetris Kelly
Joe filed a petition for dissolution of marriage from Sophie Turner on Tuesday in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It stated the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken after rumors circulated over the weekend. Joe tried to dispel them on Monday, posting to IG a photo that not so subtly flaunted his wedding ring. On Wednesday morning, the couple released a joint statement saying in part, “there are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly, this is a united decision. And we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.” Joe and Sophie were legally married in May of 2019 in Las Vegas, following that year’s Billboard Music Awards. A month later, they had a full ceremony in France with family and friends.

Neck Brace, But Make It Fashion: Doja Cat Shares New Pics of Apparent Injury

Forget how her “Demons” look, what about that neck brace?! On Wednesday (Sept. 6), Doja Cat shared a pair of pics to Instagram showing off a gnarly tri-color neck brace.

“I’m fine, my neck is fine,” she captioned the first post, choosing to relegate the second picture to the end of a separate photo set captioned “before the test he confessed.” Currently, details are scarce regarding why exactly the “Attention” rapper is sporting a neck brace. Doja Cat’s reps did not immediately respond to Billboard’s request for comment.

The revelation of Doja’s apparent injury comes less than a week before she is slated to take the stage at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper boasts six nominations at this year’s ceremony, including artist of the year, video of the year (“Attention”) and song of the summer (“Paint the Town Red”). In 2021, she served as the show’s host and won two Moonpeople.

Not only is Doja set for a major performance in a few days, she is also gearing up to release her fourth studio album. Scarlet, the follow-up to 2021’s Grammy-winning Planet Her, is set to arrive on Sept. 22. In addition to “Attention,” which peaked at No. 31 on the Hot 100, Doja Cat released two other songs to drum up anticipation for the record. “Paint the Town Red,” the album’s current radio single, is already a shining success, reaching a new peak of No. 3 on the Hot 100 this week (chart dated Sep. 9, 2023). A promotional single titled “Demons,” which features a music video starring Emmy-nominated Yellowjackets actress Christina Ricci, arrived last week (Sep. 1).

An injury wouldn’t be the first obstacle the Scarlet album campaign has had to overcome. On Aug. 31, Doja revealed an updated album cover for Scarlet. She was forced to change the original artwork — which featured a fittingly scarlet-colored spider — after fans noticed that German hardcore band Chaver also used the same spider on the artwork for their upcoming album cover.

Hopefully, everything is alright with Doja and she can get back to painting the town red.

The video kicks off with Glo in the car with Aleza, Gloss Up, Slimeroni and K Carbon, when from the passenger’s seat of the car she sees her boyfriend heading into a house with a different girl. The visual then fast-forwards to the five girls sitting on top of a roof with GloRilla sullenly drinking liquor from a bottle, when the girls suggests she teaches her man a lesson. “I got to get my get back, right?” Glo asks before striking gold. “I have an idea.”

The group of friends roll up to where GloRilla’s man lives after he goes on a date with the new girl, and one by one each girl takes turns destroying the property by breaking mirrors, spray-painting valuables, and spraying condiments all over the dining room table.

“He had the right game, but he just picked the wrong one/ (F— wrong with this dumb-a– n—a?)/ Ayy, I had to show him I’m that b—h, but I’m my daddy son/ Mmm, I’m the one (Mmm)/ Slime, h-/ When it come to doggin’ n—-s, I do that for fun (Yeah)/ I do that for fun (Yeah), I do that for fun (I’m a dog)/ Steady s—–n’ up on these b—–s like I got the runs/ Like I got the runs,” Glorilla, Aleza, Gloss Up, Slimeroni and K Carbon all take turns rapping on the chorus of the Tay Keith-produced track.

“Wrong One” marks the lastest team-up with GloRilla and her friends — she released a track alongside Gloss Up, Slimeroni, K.Carbon and Aleza with 2021’s “Set the Tone.”

How Jimmy Buffett Negotiated One of the Best Deals in Touring

Of all Jimmy Buffett‘s accomplishments, from classic hits such as “Margaritaville” and “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes” to building a billion-dollar travel-and-lifestyle empire, one of the biggest was an unprecedented, decades-long amphitheater deal in which he received a whopping 105% of the gross ticket receipts. This anti-mathematical trick stunned the concert business.

“Early in our careers, we would all whisper about Buffett’s rumored deal. Could he possibly be getting not just the lion’s share of the show profits, but all of the box-office gross? Or in some cases more than the box-office gross? What?” asks Fielding Logan, a Q Prime manager who represents country star Eric Church. “Like a mythical white whale, we’ve been chasing that deal ever since.”

How did Buffett, who died Friday at 76, pull off this legendary deal, which several concert-industry sources confirm was in place through his very last amphitheater tours?

In the late 1990s, when SFX Entertainment bought out promoters around the country, the new concert-business giant offered touring stars huge payments to anchor its summer-amphitheater lineup — and avoid losing them to rival companies. Back then, artists were asking — and receiving — 90% of the net ticket sales after expenses, leaving 10% to the promoter.

Buffett took this trend to a new level on his annual summer runs, which drew more than 3.9 million fans and grossed $215.4 million over 196 shows in the 2000s, according to Billboard Boxscore. “Here’s the thing about Jimmy: 90-10 wasn’t good enough for him. He started demanding 105%! All of the gate plus 5% of the gross,” Barry Fey, the late Denver promoter who competed with SFX at the end of his career, wrote in his 2011 book Backstage Past.

Promoters agreed, knowing they could take a cut of ancillary revenues, like parking, food and ticket service charges and — especially with Buffett’s hard-partying Parrotheads — alcohol. “It worked out for me and the other promoters because of beer sales,” Fey wrote.

In 2000, Clear Channel Communications bought SFX, then spun off the concert-promotion business into a new company known as Live Nation — which maintained his deal, sources say. So, for example, in 2005, when Buffett’s show at Arrowhead Pond (now the Honda Center) in Anaheim, Calif., made $1.13 million at the box office, according to Billboard Boxscore, Buffett would have taken home roughly $1.136 million.

Buffett, who toured through spring 2023, set a financial precedent that younger stars, such as country singer Kenny Chesney, were able to replicate, according to sources. “Jimmy was a key artist in establishing and solidifying the amphitheater model,” says Brock Holt, a longtime Nashville promoter who is now a touring consultant, “and opened the doors for a higher financial return for artists.”

“He was the only one who had the leverage to do it. He toured perennially and did the same amount of business each time. The Parrotheads came out. It was a yearly ritual,” says Randy Phillips, former CEO of promoter AEG Live, and now a consultant for Silver Lake, an investment group whose portfolio includes Madison Square Garden Sports and Endeavor. “He was the anchor to Live Nation’s schedule so it was really critical. He used that to negotiate.”

Buffett’s longtime touring reps, including Live Nation, attorney Joel Katz and agent Howard Rose, did not respond to requests for comment.

Social Media Platforms Agree To Take Down ‘Subway Surfing’ Vids Showing Teens Riding Atop Trains

HipHopWired Featured Video

Reports Of People Riding Outside New York's Subway Cars Quadruples In One Year

Source: David Dee Delgado / Getty

So, we all know internet challenges can be fun. Some of them are relatively harmless, such as the ice bucket challenge, which, by the way, raised millions for The ALS Association as the challenge was meant to raise awareness and support for the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. But then there are internet challenges trending on social media that are dangerous as hell and even outright deadly.

This brings us to the “subway surfing” challenge.

Now, it shouldn’t have to be explained to anyone that riding on top of or outside a subway train can get you killed, but, apparently, that doesn’t need to be explained—to a lot of people. In fact, subway surfing became such a huge problem in New York City that Mayor Eric Adams and MTA officials said Tuesday that social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok have agreed to automatically remove any online videos that show people (mostly teenagers) engaging in the life-risking daredevil activity.

From the Gothamist:

MTA officials said 2,600 videos and photos of subway surfing have been stripped from the social media platforms in recent months.

“Young people are being subjected to massive doses of video and material that was glorifying this,” MTA Chair Janno Lieber said during a news conference. “They (tech companies) developed algorithms to weed it out and they’re working with us to take it down.”

The MTA is also launching an awareness campaign on the dangers of subway surfing, which includes public service announcements created by city school students as well as special MetroCards and posters with the slogan “Ride Inside, Stay Alive, Subway Surfing Kills.”

“It is about peer-to-peer communication, interaction to stop this horrific action that is taking lives and injuring individuals and that impact cascades out into their peer group,” Adams said during a news conference announcing the campaign.

NYPD data shows police have made 88 arrests related to subway surfing so far this year, up from 30 during the same period of 2022.

Last year, 17-year-old Kosse Laureano died while riding on top of a train. The video footage the teen collected of him performing the deadly stunt was used earlier this year in an exhibition displayed at the Oculus Transit Center to highlight the dangers of subway surfing.

Be safe out there, folks. All internet attention isn’t good internet attention, and none of it is worth your life.

Cam’ron and MA$E Interview O.J. Simpson On ‘It Is What It Is’

Cam’ron and MA$E are proving yet again there are levels to their hit show. O.J. Simpson is the latest guest on It Is What It Is

As spotted on HipHopDX the popular sports series has extended an invite to the former football great. Joining virtually The Juice spoke to the the two rappers for almost 20 minutes about a variety of topics relating to the NFL. As expected he showed immediate support towards the running backs and made it clear the players in that position should be afforded different consideration given their impact and contribution.

“Eliminate the franchise tag for the running backs,” he said. “You can’t make them subject to the franchise tag. We have the Constitution, the greatest piece of legislation ever written, but we have amendments” he added. “They [the NFL] got to do something to rectify this inequity.” When asked about some of his favorite running backs playing currently he mentioned a select few including Saquon Barkley, Nick Chubb, Derrick Henry, Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey.

He went on to put added respect on Saquon’s name saying “I often tell people… you put us in the same situation, the only guys I’d be competing with are Barry Sanders, Gale Sayers and maybe Eric Dickerson,” O.J. Simpson said. “I would certainly throw Barkley into that argument.”

You can watch Cam’ron, MA$E and O.J. Simpson chop it up; no pun intended below.
