Jimmy Buffett’s Daughter Delaney Pens Touching Tribute to Late Singer: ‘I Will Love You Forever’

As the music industry continues to mourn Jimmy Buffett — who died at 76 on Sept. 1 — his daughter Sarah “Delaney” Buffett shared some thoughts about her late father, how he handle the cancer he ultimately succumbed to and the legacy he left behind.

“I knew my dad my whole life but in his final days, I saw who he was: a man whose spirit could not be broken,” her message, posted Wednesday (Sept. 6), began. “Despite the pain, he smiled everyday. He was kind when he had every excuse not to be. He told us not to be sad or scared, but to keep the party going. And as much as I’d like to use that as an excuse to drink myself into oblivion worthy of his literary heroes, I know it’s not what he meant. Yes, he loved his weed and his wine, but the truth is, most of the time, he was just high on life, and that is what he wanted for everyone: to enjoy the fantastic trip that life can be.”

The 31-year-old then shed light on Buffett’s relationships with his medical team. “My dad repeatedly told us how much he appreciated the doctors, nurses, and every person who was there for him during his battle with cancer,” she continued. So to those who took care of my dad at home and in the hospital, I want to thank you for giving us more time together. I am eternally grateful.”

After thanking friends, fans and family for their well wished amid her father’s death, Delaney extended a final thank you to her father for giving her a life that wouldn’t have been possible without his career to support them. “Finally, to my dad, thank you. You turned nothing into something and gave me everything. I will never be able to repay you or my mom for my beautiful life. I will love you forever, and I will always keep the party going (responsibly, of course).”

The “Margaritaville” singer’s death was revealed via his official website and social media accounts. “Jimmy passed away on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” read the statement. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

Buffet’s cause of death was revealed to be skin cancer.

Nintendo Switch 2 Reportedly Shown To Developers At Gamescom

Source: BEHROUZ MEHRI / Getty / Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 is currently the white whale of the gaming industry, and reportedly, a bunch of Captain Ahabs (devs) got to see it at Gamescom.

The evidence is mounting that Nintendo showed off the highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom, and they also got to see it in action. Spotted on The Verge, via Eurogamer, and Windows Central, “trusted devs” saw a tech demo of how some games run on the Switch 2.

Per The Verge:

There was reportedly a demo of an improved version of Zelda: Breath of the Wild designed to run on the more advanced hardware inside the Nintendo Switch 2. Eurogamer’s report follows rumors from Windows Central’s Jez Corden that Nintendo had discussed a next-generation Switch with select developers at Gamescom.

Reports also claim that devs saw Epic Games Unreal Engine 5 tech demo of The Matrix Awakens running on hardware Nintendo hopes to get into the Nintendo Switch 2.

According to The Verge’s reporting, the game utilized “Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology with ray tracing enabled,” signaling that Nintendo and Nvidia are possibly working on a more powerful chip for the Switch 2.

Other Nintendo Switch 2 Rumors

VGC also reports that Nintendo is gunning for a 2024 release for the Nintendo Switch 2. It will not use an OLED screen, which is an unusual decision, and will still have support for physical cartridges.

“Certain developers” also have developer kits and console development is “progressing well,” Nikkei Asia reports.

These latest reports follow the multiple rumors of Nintendo dropping a “Nintendo Switch Pro” that was allegedly supposed to allow 4K gaming, and 11 developers did get their hands on 4K Nintendo Switch development kits.

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo had to change plans due to the global chip shortage. Nintendo, who is notoriously tight-lipped about their projects, denied it was working on a 4K Nintendo Switch.

As expected, the video game streets are talking. You can see the reactions to the recent developments in the gallery below.

Here’s Why Fans Think Olivia Rodrigo Is Releasing 4 Bonus Songs on a ‘Guts’ Deluxe: See the Titles

Olivia Rodrigo might just have four extra songs in store following the release of her sophomore album Guts — which, at the time of publication, is less than 24 hours away.

Out Friday (Sept. 8) at midnight, Guts already has a confirmed 12 songs on its standard track list, which includes the previously released singles “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?” But fans think they may have spotted four additional song titles hidden in a faux infomercial filmed by Rodrigo promoting her fast-approaching LP, posted on her official YouTube channel Wednesday (Sept. 6).

The parody infomercial recommends Guts to people who “regularly suffer from the agony” of spilling their guts to strangers or who struggle with trusting their guts. Around the 23-second mark, the album’s tracklist appears onscreen and scrolls from top to bottom.

At first glance, it looks just like the same tracklist confirmed by Rodrigo earlier this summer. But then, at the 26-second mark, the screen glitches for just a split second, quickly revealing what look to be the titles of four new tracks before they disappear: “Obsessed,” “Scared of My Guitar,” “Stranger” and “Girl I’ve Always Been.”

Some of these new titles perfectly match the clues Rodrigo hid in a cryptic tracklist teaser posted in July, particularly “Obsessed” and “Stranger.”

“GUTS DELUXE IS COMING,” tweeted one fan, reposting the infomercial on Twitter.

“GUTS DELUXE IS ABOUT TO CHANGE MY LIFE,” wrote another.

Guts will mark Rodrigo’s first LP since Sour, her 2021 debut that catapulted her to superstardom with No. 1 hits “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.” She’s already scored another No. 1 with Guts, thanks to its smash lead single “Vampire,” released in June.

In a recent conversation with Phoebe Bridgers for Interview magazine, the 20-year-old star opened up about what she’s doing differently this time around. Alluding to her desire to avoid a repeat of the Joshua Bassett/Sabrina Carpenter drama sparked by the success of “Drivers License,” she told Bridgers that she now feels a responsibility to send her songs to their subjects before releasing them.

“I feel like last time, there was so much weird media s–t and I had no idea how to deal with any of it,” she reflected. “Literally, it was the first song out of the gate and all of that s–t happened. I felt so ill-equipped … That was an overwhelming experience, but now I definitely feel a responsibility [to give a heads up].”

See if you can spot the four rumored deluxe tracks in Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts infomercial above.

Kanye West AKA Ye Launches Legal Offensive Against Instagram Music Leaker

HipHopWired Featured Video

Celebrity Sightings In Los Angeles - May 13, 2023

Kanye West is launching a legal offensive against an Instagram page for leaking a number of unreleased songs to the public. According to the report, Ye believes the person was once part of his musical inner circle and is violating a confidentiality agreement.

TMZ reports that Kanye West, 46, filed a suit against the Instagram account @DaUnreleasedGod for releasing reportedly 21 songs since March of this year on the social media network. The same social media handle operates a page on X, formerly known as Twitter, and an additional 11 songs were leaked to the service.

More from TMZ:

The complaint specifies Ye has no clue who’s behind the IG page but believes whoever is behind the account worked with him in the past and signed a confidentiality agreement before being given access to the tracks … and he believes the leaks violated those agreements.

He plans to amend the filing with the names of the people behind the account once he learns their identity.

The outlet adds that West is rumored to be working on new tunes en route to a musical comeback.

In other Kanye West news, Yeezy and his wife, Bianca Censori, are banned from using a water taxi service in Italy after performing what appeared to be a lewd act in front of several onlookers.

We’ll keep an eye on the lawsuit story as it develops.

Olivia Rodrigo to Perform at 2023 Video Music Awards

Olivia Rodrigo is set to perform at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, live from Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Rodrigo had a memorable night at the VMAs two years ago. She performed “Good 4 U” and won three awards, which enabled her to tie BTS and Lil Nas X for the most awards of the night. She won best new artist as well as two awards for “Drivers License” – song of the year and PUSH performance of the year.

Rodrigo has six VMA nominations this year – all for “Vampire,” which in July became her third single (following “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U”) to enter the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1. “Vampire” is up for video of the year, song of the year, best pop, song of summer, best cinematography and best editing.

Rodrigo was precisely the kind of mainstream pop superstar booking this year’s VMAs needed. She and Doja Cat may be the Sept. 12 show’s best “gets” to date, in terms of serving the show’s target audience. The performer lineup also includes Anitta, Demi Lovato, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Lil Wayne, Måneskin, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Shakira, Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER. Though the show is almost upon us, MTV says additional performers are still to be announced.

Shakira will receive MTV’s Video Vanguard Award and perform live on the show for the first time since 2006. Diddy will accept the Global Icon Award and perform live on the show for the first time since 2005.

Rodrigo’s sophomore album, Guts, is set for release on Friday (Sept. 8), just four days before the VMAs. Her debut album, Sour, logged five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2021.

Rodrigo, just 20, is the youngest artist in Hot 100 history to have three singles enter the chart at No. 1. She is also the first artist ever to debut atop the Hot 100 with the lead singles from two career-opening albums.

With the addition of social categories, Taylor Swift leads all nominees for the 2023 VMAs with 11 nods, followed by SZA (eight); BLACKPINK, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj and Rodrigo (six each); Kim Petras and Sam Smith (five each); and Beyoncé, Diddy, Drake, Ice Spice, Karol G, Metro Boomin, Shakira and TOMORROW X TOGETHER (four each).

General fan voting is now closed; voting remains open for social categories and best new artist.

Bruce Gillmer and Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic are executive producers of the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. Barb Bialkowski is co-executive producer. Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba serve as executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is music talent executive.

The Zach Bryan Bump: The War and Treaty, Kacey Musgraves & More Up in Streams Following Features on New Album

Welcome to Billboard Pro’s Trending Up column, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry’s attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip.

This week: Guests on Zach Bryan’s latest blockbuster LP see gains in their own streams, while a dance challenge resurrects one of the few “minor” Rihanna hits and a rising South African artist enjoys a breakout moment.

The War and Treaty See Biggest Gains From Zach Bryan Bump

As you may have heard, Zach Bryan rules the Billboard charts this week (dated Sept. 9), with his self-titled album besting the Billboard 200 while the set’s lead single, “I Remember Everything,” debuts atop the Billboard Hot 100 — his first No. 1 on both charts. That song features Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, one of four guest artists on the set, all of whom are up in official on-demand U.S. streams the week following the album’s well-received release.

Musgraves and fellow star guest the Lumineers both see modest streaming gains for their catalogues — respectively up 8% to 6.2 million and 5% to 18.4 million, according to Luminate — while Sierra Ferrell’s work is up just 2%. But the biggest beneficiary from Zach Bryan is easily Americana duo The War and Treaty, whose streaming numbers more than double from 138,000 to 278,000 following their appearance on the set’s “Hey Driver” (which is also the album’s second-highest debut on the Hot 100 this week, bowing at No. 14).

Combined with the good news they got this morning about The War and Treaty receiving its first nomination at the CMA awards (for vocal duo of the year), it’s been a very good week for the married couple Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

If It’s Streaming That You Want: Dance Trend Revives 18-Year-Old Rihanna Single

As fans continue to wait for Rihanna’s full-length follow-up to 2016’s Billboard 200-topping Anti, they’re turning to the very beginning of her discography to quench their thirst. Thanks to a viral TikTok dance trend created by professional dancer Brett Sewell, “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want” — the second and final single from Rihanna’s 2005 debut album — has posted sizable streaming gains.

According to Luminate, “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want,” which peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100, has earned over 251,000 official on-demand U.S. streams between September 1-5, a whopping 172% increase from just over 92,000 streams between August 25-29. Filled to the brim with hip rolls galore, Sewell’s choreography has quickly dominated TikTok. His original video has garnered over 8.2 million views and 1.1 million likes since it was first uploaded on Aug. 25. The accompanying TikTok sound currently boasts over 141,900 posts.

After 18 years, “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want” seems to finally be getting its proper due after spending nearly two decades in the shadow of “Pon De Replay.” – KYLE DENIS

TikTok Spurs Tsunami of Streaming Gains for Tyla’s “Water”

2023 has seen its fair share of breakout artists across genres, and with the latest eye-popping streaming gains for “Water,” South African singer and dancer Tyla is looking to add her name to that list.

According to Luminate, “Water,” the follow-up to her Ayra Starr-assisted amapiano summer hit “Girl Next Door,” has earned over 932,000 official on-demand U.S. streams between September 1-5, a staggering 198% increase from just over 312,000 streams between August 25-29. The boost is even more impressive considering “Water” posted 121,000 streams for the whole tracking week of Aug. 11-17.

A booty-centric dance trend spawned from the song’s official live performance choreography has quickly taken over TikTok, resulting in such explosive growth for the track. Tyla herself has actively encouraged and participated in the trend, reposting fans giving their best attempt at her hypnotic choreography — water bottle and all. The official TikTok sound for “Water” currently boasts over 49,300 posts. Tyla’s most viral video featuring the song and its choreography has earned 2 million likes and over 17.4 million views on the platform.

With an official music video still on the horizon, “Water” is perfectly positioned to continue growing into what could become Tyla’s biggest worldwide hit yet. – KD

10 First-Timers on Billboard’s Charts This Week: Buck Meek, Juju

Billboard has more than 200 different weekly charts in its menu, encompassing numerous genres and formats.

Here’s a look at 10 artists who appear on surveys for the first time on the Sept. 9-dated charts.

Gazarek has charted five solo albums on Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart, including the top 10s Dream In The Blue (No. 10 peak in 2016) and Thirsty Ghost (No. 3; 2019). The group is currently touring in support of its debut album, with dates slated through November.

The French rapper (real name William Mundala) earns his first-ever Billboard chart appearance thanks to his collaboration with Dave on “Meridian.” The song, released Aug. 25 on Neighbourhood Recordings, debuts at No. 164 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart with 9.4 million streams outside the U.S. The song has already become a hit in other countries, as it debuts at No. 2 on Billboard’s France Songs chart, No. 4 on Luxembourg Songs, No. 7 on Switzerland Songs, and No. 8 on Belgium Songs.

Tiakola is also a member of the hip-hop group 4Keus. He released his debut solo studio album Mélo in May 2022.

SOG

The Colombian producer (whose name is an acronym for his full name, Santiago Orrego Gallego) reaches Billboard’s charts for the first time under an artist billing thanks to his new collaboration with Blessd and Peso Pluma, “Ojos Azules.” The song, released Aug. 24 on JM World/Cigol/Warner Latina, debuts at No. 46 on the Hot Latin Songs chart, fueled in large part by 2.1 million U.S. streams earned in its first full week of tracking. SOG has previously charted two songs on Hot Latin Songs as a producer: Ryan Castro’s “Mujeriego” (No. 33 peak in 2022) and Castro and Peso Pluma’s “Quema” (No. 21 peak in July). He also produced Blessd’s “Instagram,” which reached No. 18 on Latin Rhythm Airplay and No. 47 on Latin Airplay.

Akiaura, LONOWN & STM

All three artists arrive on Billboard’s charts with their collaboration “Sleepwalker.” The song, released June 30 via virtual memory404, debuts at No. 42 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, powered by 790,000 official U.S. streams earned in the latest tracking week. The song appears on Akiaura and LONOWN’s latest EP, Ketamine Girl. TikTok has been a contributing factor to the song’s growing profile, as a portion of the audio has been used in over 10,000 clips on the platform. Akiaura is an experimental electronic artist whose music is inspired by darkwave/underground basement sounds. LONOWN, who records phonk, ambient and trap music, has released one additional EP: Heaven Subculture in 2019. STM, who provides the vocals on “Sleepwalker,” has released several other solo EPs, including ELECTRONICA (2019), CHROMA (2022), and SPLIT (2022).

DABOYWAY

The American-born Thai rapper (real name Prinya Intachai) lands on Billboard’s charts with his new track “POGO” featuring Mark B. The song, which he self-released Aug. 25, debuts at No. 8 on Latin Rhythm Digital Song Sales and No. 16 on Latin Digital Song Sales. DABOYWAY released his debut self-titled solo LP in 2020 on Def Jam Recordings Thailand. Outside of his solo work, he was a member of the Bangkok-based rap group Thaitanium.

Sydtherockerkid

Sydtherockerkid (real name Sydney Schmier) has only released one solo song on streaming services so far: “Bad Girl,” in May. She’s also one-half of the pop duo Stereo Jane with her sister, Mia. The pair released their debut five-track EP Are We There Yet? last year. As for HARBER, the EDM artist had landed one song on Billboard’s charts before this week: “More Than,” with Lexy Panterra, reached No. 21 on the Dance Club Songs chart in 2019.
