2024 Golden Globes’ Ratings Climb 50% From 2023

Hollywood loves a good comeback story, and the Golden Globes have just made one.

The 2024 Golden Globe Awards, which aired live on CBS on Sunday (Jan. 7), averaged 9.4 million viewers, up 50% from last year. The show achieved its largest audience since 2020, according to Nielsen time zone-adjusted fast national, including out-of-home, ratings for Sunday.

Hollywood’s Party of the Year – the phrase has been trademarked – was Sunday’s most-watched entertainment program.

Hosted by comedian Jo Koy, the Globes reached the largest livestreaming audience for an awards show across Paramount+ and other CBS platforms since the 65th annual Grammy Awards in February 2023.

It was the second largest livestreamed CBS special event on Paramount+ ever in terms of AMA (average minute audience) and reach.

On social media, the Golden Globes dominated Sunday night with nearly 30 billion potential impressions, ranking as the No. 1 program of the night based on total interactions.

Three years ago, the Globes were rocked by scandal about a lack of diversity in the organization and ethical lapses. It was so bad that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who hosted that year for the fourth time, openly criticized the show while hosting the show. Fey said, “We all know awards shows are stupid. The point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important and there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. … You have to change that.”

The 2021 show’s ratings plummeted, from 18.32 million viewers in 2020 to just 6.91 million viewers. That marked the first time the show’s viewership had dropped below 14 million viewers since it moved from TBS to NBC in 1996. Whether it was the controversy or the disruptive effect of the pandemic isn’t clear, but the ratings tanked, even in the hands of top-tier hosts like Fey and Poehler.

Two years ago, the Golden Globes were held as a private dinner, with no television or streaming component. It seemed like the show, which originated in 1944, might be too damaged to ever recover. But the idea of the show – a fun, loose event where seemingly every big star in film and TV (and sometimes music too) are jam-packed into one ballroom – was simply too good for Hollywood to let it go.

The show was back on NBC last year, but reached just 6.3 million viewers. This year it moved over to CBS for a show that lived up to its old reputation as Hollywood’s free-wheeling party of the year, with such A-listers as Meryl, Oprah, Taylor and Bruce in attendance.

The champagne that flowed so freely last night in the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., is flowing again in offices at the Golden Globes and CBS. The show appears to have survived its brush with death.

What is considered the best dry shampoo? You don’t want to grab the first can you see, as some formulas can leave a powdery residue or weigh your strands down, resulting in a look that will have you feeling the opposite of a good hair day.

Before you reach for just any dry shampoo, Billboard Shopping spoke with celebrity hairstylist and star of Paramount+ reality show Blowing LA‘s Ted Gibson to get his expert insight on the best formulas to use, no matter what your budget and hair texture are. With clientele including Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Rachel Brosnahan, Lupita Nyong’o, Gabrielle Union and more, it’s no secret the hairstylist knows his way around hair products.

Keep reading to see Gibson’s picks, as well as how to use dry shampoo and ingredients to look out for.

How to Use Dry Shampoo

At first sight, it may look easy to use dry shampoo, whether you’re looking to maintain a blowout using your go-to blowdryer or hiding the fact you’re going on day three of unwashed hair. If you spray too close, you may get an unwanted residue, whereas spraying too far may not get enough of the product in your strands. Gibson recommends you “Spray 4 to 6 inches away from the scalp concentrating on the scalp and not the hair.”

Don’t just leave it, though — he further adds that “After you have applied it, massage the scalp to evenly distribute [the product around] the entire scalp.”

Best Dry Shampoo Ingredients

Gibson suggests when searching for the right dry shampoo for yourself, you “Look for Vegan and cruelty-free formulas.” This usually includes plant-based ingredients like argan oil, avocado oil, castor oil, black seed oil, murumuru butter and aloe vera.

“I think spray is good, but sometimes I do prefer a powder depending on what I want to accomplish and time for application,” he adds. “I have used them for covers of magazines as well as red carpet events.”

Here’s Why Justin Timberlake Fans Think His Sixth Album Is Coming Soon

Is a new era in store for Justin Timberlake? According to fans of the former boy bander, signs are pointing to “yes.”

On Monday (Jan. 8), fans noticed that all the posts on the “SexyBack” singer’s Instagram account were wiped clean. The only thing that remained was a profile photo of Timberlake, which featured his eyes sending a piercing look to a car’s rearview mirror. The singer’s bio is also blank, though his posts on Threads remain intact as of press time.

Fans over on X, formerly known as Twitter, concluded that the removal of Timberlake’s Instagram posts — a promo technique used by fellow pop stars like Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, The Weeknd and more ahead of album releases or large projects — means that a new album is likely on the way.

“Spread the word everyone. Justin Timberlake is coming!! #JT6isComing #NewEra,” a fan tweeted. “So the next time when Justin Timberlake is changing his profile pic we get the lead single omg I am crying and screaming,” another fan speculated, while a third fan wrote that Timberlake is “watching social media with his imminent return with new music.”

Should Timberlake release an album, it would mark his sixth album and first since 2018’s Man of the Woods. The album marked his fourth consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard 200, where it charted for a total of 19 weeks. Just days after the album’s Feb. 2 release, he performed at the Super Bowl LII halftime show in Minneapolis.

“Can’t wait for ‘Can’t Get Enough’ in [two] days!!! #THISISMENOW The wait is almost over…” she captioned the video, which features her in full bridal gear engaging in classic wedding activities among different grooms, from exchanging rings and saying “I do” to sharing the first dance as a married couple and driving off to the honeymoon in a convertible getaway car. While she has a couple of different grooms in the teaser, her partner Ben Affleck is not one of them.

“Can’t Get Enough” is the first single to be released from Lopez’s forthcoming album This Is Me … Now. The “Let’s Get Loud” singer first told fans about the album, which serves as the follow-up to 2002’s This Is Me … Then, in November 2022. The album marks J.Lo’s first album since 2014’s A.K.A.

Speaking about the album in her 2022 Vogue cover story, Lopez described the album as the “culmination of who I am as a person and an artist.” She added: “People think they know things about what happened to me along the way, the men I was with — but they really have no idea, and a lot of times they get it so wrong. There’s a part of me that was hiding a side of myself from everyone. And I feel like I’m at a place in my life, finally, where I have something to say about it.”

This Is Me … Now is scheduled to release on Feb. 16, 2024.

Ariana Grande’s New Track, The Weeknd Teases New Era, Golden Globes 2024 & More | Billboard News

Odetari and 6arelyhuman are Billboard’s latest cover stars. We recap everything you missed at the 2024 Golden Globes. The 2023 Primetime Emmy Creative Arts Awards were this weekend, and musicians were among the big winners of the night. Ariana Grande took to social media to announce that her new single “Yes, And?” will be out this Friday, The Weeknd is seemingly teasing a new era of music, and Lil Nas X tweets that new music is coming. And more!

Tetris Kelly:
It was a huge award weekend with the Golden Globes and the Creative Arts Emmys going down. Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Lil Nas X tease new music. We revealed this week’s top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. And we kick off a full week of cover stars.

Happy Monday! It’s January 8th. I’m Tetris Kelly and we’ve got, wait for it, five new cover stars this week for our Future of Genres issue. And today’s Future of Electronic cover stars are Odetari and 6arelyhuman.

Odetari:
So the first song that I had that went viral I think in, like, one day, I had hit 256,000 streams, which was crazy to me because I had never passed like 10k on a song. But I saw how fast it went up, got really excited, and then the next day it dropped like half so it was like a roller coaster.

6arelyhuman:
Once it started to really hit was when I would see a bunch of videos from people just creating things and coming up with their own ideas with the song. I remember specifically one of the things that helped a lot was a South Park edit. I don’t know why, but that’s something that really helped the song take off.

Odetari:
A lot of people that were making similar music to us, were not showing their faces at all.

6arelyhuman:
Yeah.

Odetari:
We made sure to also attach the image to it because a lot of songs that blow up on TikTok, most people just scroll like they’ll hear the song but they don’t really care about it or the person who made it. I feel like we really nailed it on that.

Tetris Kelly:
For the full interview, head to Billboard.com. We’ll have a new cover for you every day this week, but it’s time to get to our awards show coverage. If you didn’t catch the Golden Globes last night don’t worry, we got you covered.

Audacy Reveals Details of Bankruptcy Agreement With Lenders

Radio company Audacy has reached a deal with a supermajority of lenders for a prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy deal that will reduce its debt from $1.9 billion to $350 million, the company announced Sunday (Jan. 7). The agreement, first disclosed last week by The Wall Street Journal, will give Audacy’s debt holders equity in the reorganized company.

Chapter 11 proceedings began on Sunday in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. Audacy filed a proposed plan of reorganization that incorporates the terms of the agreement with lenders. The company expects the court to hold a confirmation hearing in February and to exit bankruptcy proceedings once it receives FCC approval.

Some of Audacy’s lenders have committed to providing $57 million in debtor-in-possession financing — $32 million from a term loan and $25 million from an increase in an existing accounts receivable financing facility. The financing, along with the company’s cash from operations, will help Audacy maintain its operations and pay its employees, vendors and partners.

Once the plan is approved by the court, the terms of the current board of directors will expire and a new board of directors will be assigned. The plan of reorganization calls for the new board of directors to adopt a management incentive plan to reward employees and directors of the reorganized company. The plan will set aside 10% of new common stock for stock options, restricted stock, appreciation rights and other equity-based awards.

A 2017 merger with CBS Radio helped Audacy — then named Entercom — expand its business but also increased its debt load. The interest payments would have been more manageable in a growing business, but “the perfect storm of sustained macroeconomic challenges over the past four years facing the traditional advertising market has led to a sharp reduction of several billion dollars in cumulative radio ad spending,” David J. Field, Audacy chairman/president/CEO, said in a statement. “These market factors have severely impacted our financial condition and necessitated our balance sheet restructuring.”

The Philadelphia-based company’s portfolio of about 230 radio stations includes WCBS in New York, KROQ in Los Angeles, WFAN Sports Radio in New York and WBBM Newsradio in Chicago. Audacy’s podcasting brands include two studios, Cadence13 and Pineapple Street Studios, and Popcorn, an online marketplace for connecting creators and brands.

Sunday’s announcement eliminated nearly half of Audacy’s remaining equity value as the company’s share price fell 47.1% to $0.1058 on Monday. Audacy has traded over the counter since it was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in May. A 30-for-1 reverse stock split increased the share price from $0.07 to $2.13 on June 30, but the stock lost nearly all its value over the next six months as financial problems mounted.

R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: Erick the Architect, ScarLip, NLE Choppa, UMI, V & More

And, we’re back! As the industry recalibrates itself from the holiday rush, the hip-hop and R&B worlds are slowly getting back to their weekly tidal waves of new music. The options are a bit sparse this week, as January is typically a slow month for new releases, but there are still some standouts. Even as Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2, Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” and Drake’s For All the Dogs continue to rule the charts, there are few new remixes and singles that could very well grow into the first smash hits of 2024.

Freshest Find: Erick the Architect & George Clinton, “Ezekiel’s Wheel”

Erick the Architect of Flatbush Zombie has a solo album on the way, and if “Ezekiel’s Wheel” is anything to go by, we’re in for a stunner of an album. Alongside the legendary George Clinton, Erick blends notes of ’90s East Coast hip-hop, reggae, funk and soul for a song that recounts his experiences growing up in Brooklyn, New York and growing into the rapper he is today. Lyrically, the track is anchored by an allusion to the Biblical story of Ezekiel’s wheel; “Everyone’s keepin’ secrets for oilin’ / Have Ezekiel’s wheels gone squeaky?” Clinton asks in trademark scraggly voice. There’s a gentleness in Clinton’s delivery that nicely offsets the chugging nature of Matt Zara’s production, a wonderful study in sonic contrast.

ScarLip feat. NLE Choppa, “Blick (Remix)”

For the remix to her latest hit, rising Bronx rapper ScarLip tapped “Slut Me Out” hitmaker NLE Choppa. “Blick” has already been gaining traction on TikTok thanks to a viral dance, and this new remix is sure to give the track an extra boost. Most of the original “Blick” track remains unchanged, ScarLip’s gruff tone anchors high-energy verses and a danceable hook alike, so NLE Choppa smartly adapts his style to her formula. “Shake a n—a down like booty and cheeks/ I’ma Summer Walk s–t down, shout out Lil Meech
Call it abuse how we beatin’ the streets/ Jumped off the porch, you was beatin’ your meat,” he raps in his signature blend of sexed-up humor.

Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine & The Alchemist, “F–k & Get High”

Over a luxurious, drum-heavy instrumental courtesy of The Alchemist, Westside Gunn & Conway the Machine trade verses that prioritize a certain kind of lustful braggadocio. In between their relatively heady proclamations of wealth and success, they use the hook (a notably sparse “All I wanna do is f–k and get high/ That’s all I wanna do”) for some breathing room. It’s a lightweight track, but the depth of Alchemist’s production provides a sturdy foundation for their ruminations on some of the finer things in life.

Sdot Go, SweepersENT, Jay Hound, Sha Gz & Jay5ive, “I Like to Party”

This song has been going viral on TikTok for months as a snippet, and now it’s finally here in all of its glory. Sdot’s opening lines — “I like to party, but I need b–tches/ Clap-clap to the beat/ Up, I’m tryna see if she wit’ it” — are something of a manifesto. His gruff semi-growl immediately signals the track as a drill anthem (as does the pounding production, courtesy of Ajellz, Nxxre, Bullo Producer and YoJelly) — but, more importantly, his tone is the track’s entire center of gravity. There are a slew of artists on “I Like to Party,” but no one’s voice is as commanding or as charismatic as Sdot’s. And that’s why he can score hits whether he’s behind bars or not.

Ama Louise, “Send Your Loving”

Rising R&B Singer Ama Louise delivers a slinking, sultry ode to the security of true love with “Send Your Loving.” A quiet storm of twinkling synths and keys soundtrack her pleas for a lover to send their “loving” so she can create some sense of safety for herself. “So send your loving to me tonight/ ‘Cause only you can save me from my mind,” she croons in her honeyed timbre. From the production to Ama’s vocal performance, “Send Your Loving” is an incredibly intimate affair; it’s warm and inviting, but the ache and longing that course through her background vocals are what truly pull the song together.

UMI & V of BTS, “Wherever U R”

As the BTS boys continue to fulfill their respective military duties and await their long-anticipated comeback, fans have found solace in each group member’s solo endeavors. Last year, Layover, V’s debut solo studio album, reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 thanks to its tight blend of pop and R&B. Now, the BTS star is kicking off 2024 by throwing an assist to UMI on the tender, guitar-backed “Wherever U R.” “Even on the days, I ain’t right by your side/ I’m keeping my promise that/ I will be wherever you are,” he sings. The duet is incredibly lush in the way UMI’s and V’s voices marry across the tasteful instrumental arrangement. Likely V’s last musical release until he completes his military service, “Wherever U R” is a heartfelt “see you later” to his fans that doubles as a heart-melting anthem of commitment for lovers.

Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ Is Being Adapted Into a Stage Play

Baby, he’s still a star! Nearly 40 years after Prince unleashed the original Purple Rain film and soundtrack album, the era-defining story is headed to the stage — and possibly The Great White Way.

A stage adaptation of Purple Rain is under development, with a world premiere in the works, as per The Hollywood Reporter on Monday (Jan. 8). The adaptation is set to feature a score by the late Prince, with a book by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who is currently enjoying the Broadway run of his acclaimed drama Appropriate. Jacobs-Jenkins’ book will be based on the original Purple Rain screenplay, which was written by Albert Magnoli (who also directed the original film) and William Blinn. Lileana Blain-Cruz — who picked up a Tony nomination in 2022 for best direction of a play (The Skin of Our Teeth) — is set to direct, with Tony winner Orin Wolf on production duties.

The film version of Purple Rain arrived in 1984, starring Prince as The Kid, a burgeoning Minneapolis rock musician who trudges his way through rival bands, fleeting romances, and a gritty home life. To date, the film has grossed nearly $70 million worldwide, and, in 1984, it won the Academy Award for best original song score.

The accompanying soundtrack of the same name was a blockbuster success, spending 24 weeks atop the Billboard 200. The set spawned several Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “When Doves Cry” (No. 1, five weeks), “Let’s Go Crazy” (No. 1, two weeks), “Take Me With U” (No. 25), “I Would Die 4 U” (No. 8) and “Purple Rain” (No. 2). Purple Rain currently boasts a 13x platinum certification from the RIAA in recognition of over 13 million copies shipped in the U.S. alone. In addition, the soundtrack won a Grammy for bet rock performance by a duo or group with vocal and best score soundtrack for visual media.

“We can’t think of a more fitting tribute than to honor Prince and the Purple Rain legacy with this stage adaptation of the beloved story,” said L. Londell McMillan, chairman of The NorthStar Group, and Larry Mestel, founder and CEO of Primary Wave Music“We are thrilled with our Broadway partners and creative team, who are bringing a theatricality to the film’s original fictional story. We can’t wait for a new generation to discover Purple Rain and for lovers of the original film and album to experience its power once again, this time live.”

Prince has earned 20 top 10 entries on the Billboard 200, including the chart-toppers Around the World In A Day (1985, three weeks), Batman (1989, six weeks), The Very Best of Prince (2001, one week), 3121 (2006, one week), and, of course, Purple Rain. On the Hot 100, the legendary musician has collected five No. 1 singles from 19 top 10 entries, including “Cream” (two weeks), “Kiss” (two weeks) and “Batdance” (one week).

Dita Von Teese Says Teaching Taylor Swift the ‘Bejeweled’ Martini Glass Routine Was the ‘Best Experience’

Taylor Swift has earned herself a spot in the penthouse of Dita Von Teese’s heart. The famed burlesque performer shared in a new chat on the Allison Interviews podcast that the “Anti-Hero” singer was delightful to work with on the martini glass routine in the pop superstar’s “Bejeweled” music video.

“The best experience was Taylor,” Von Teese said while discussing teaching her iconic routine to others. “She’s really, like, a kind girl. She knew everything about what I do.”

The performer added that the 12-time Grammy winner didn’t just want her in the shadows, either. “She wanted to not just have me be behind the scenes teaching her to be, you know, in my glass,” Von Teese explained. “She wanted to showcase what I do.”

And that was exactly what happened in the “Bejeweled” music video. Von Teese appears alongside the pop superstar in one segment, recreating the burlesque star’s sultry dance, with both women teasingly pull off a stocking before sensually dousing themselves with liquid squeezed from giant olives while in the martini glasses.

While Swift was a model student, Von Teese said some of her experiences weren’t quite as bright, namely, when she was asked to teach the same routine to former Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel for her now-defunct eponymous talk show. “Guess what? She didn’t show up for rehearsal!” Von Teese shared. “I was like, ‘Why am I at rehearsal? I don’t need to rehearse. I can do this blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back.’ Then we did it live on camera, and I was like, ‘You’re on your own.’”

“Bejeweled” — off Swift’s 2022 Billboard 200 No. 1 album Midnights — peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 2022. The album also featured singles “Anti-Hero,” which was No. 1 for eight weeks, “Lavender Haze” and “Karma,” both of which reached No. 2 on the Hot 100.

Watch Von Teese talk about working with Swift in her podcast appearance below, and revisit the “Bejeweled” music video above:
