Niecy Nash-Betts Gives Electrifying Emmy Acceptance Speech

Niecy Nash-Betts exhilarated the audience when she took to the stage to accept the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as Glenda Cleveland in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The outspoken actress was her characteristic self with a speech that was both funny and poignant.

After thanking God, her wife, Jessica Betts, Ryan Murphy, the creator of the series, and Evan Peters–her co-star, Nash added, “And you know who I want to thank? I want to thank me.”

“For believing in me and doing what they said I could not do, and I want to say to myself in front of all you beautiful people, ‘Go on girl with your bad self. You did that.’”

The statement received rousing applause from the audience and Nash-Betts added, “Finally, I accept this award on behalf of every Black and brown woman who has gone unheard yet over-policed. Like Glenda Cleveland, like Sandra Bland, like Breonna Taylor. As an artist, my job is to speak truth to power, and baby I’mma do it till the day I die. Mama, I won.”

Nash-Betts portrayed Glenda Cleveland who was Dahmer’s neighbor. It was Cleveland who repeatedly contacted police about Dahmer’s irregular behavior and she was repeatedly ignored as the killer went on to murder more than a dozen men–most of whom were Black and Brown.

According to Huffington Post, Nash-Betts expounded on her remarks in the press room following her win where she stated, “I’m the only one who knows how many nights I cried because I couldn’t be seen for a certain type of role,” she said. “I’m the one who knows what it’s like to go through a divorce on camera and you still have to pull up and show out.”

“And you still have to go home [because] you have children and a whole life. So, I’m proud of myself. I’m proud that I did something that people said I could not do because I believed in me. And sometimes people don’t believe in themselves. I hope my speech was a delicious invitation for people to do just that,” she continued. “Believe in yourself and congratulate yourself. Sometimes you’ve got to encourage – what? Yourself. And that’s why it’s not called ‘mama-esteem,’ ‘them-esteem,’ ‘us-esteem.’ It’s called ‘self-esteem’ — because don’t nobody got to believe it but you.”

13-Year-Old Jumped & Beaten With A Belt For His Sneakers In Brooklyn

HipHopWired Featured Video

Brookyn Teen Sneakers Stolen Suspects

Source: @NYPDTips / NYPD Crime Stoppers

Things in the streets of New York have been going from bad to worse over the past few years, but kids getting jumped for the sneakers on their feet (consistently) is a practice that hasn’t been seen for decades.

According to New York Daily News, that’s exactly what happened to a 13-year-old boy who was assaulted by a group of teenagers for his sneakers Friday (Jan. 12), in Brooklyn and made off with his footwear. Using a belt to beat him into submission, two boys and a girl pounced on the unsuspecting teen near 17th Street and Fourth Avenue in South Slope around 3:15 p.m.

Once they got what they wanted, they fled the scene but not before cameras around the vicinity captured their images.

The New York Daily News reports:

After grabbing the footwear, the muggers ran to the Prospect Ave. station and jumped on a Manhattan-bound R train, cops said.

The victim declined medical attention.

The NYPD on Tuesday released surveillance images of the three suspects and asked the public’s help identifying them and tracking them down.

The girl, who has red braided hair, was wearing a pink hoodie, black pants and black sneakers. The two boys were wearing blue-and-black jackets and dark-colored pants.

We hate to be those people, but as sneakerheads we have to know which pair of sneakers exactly were taken. Were they some exclusive Air Jordans? Travis Scott’s? Off-White Nikes? We can’t really tell from the picture. It’s wrong and foul regardless, but we hope these kids aren’t risking jail time for a pair of everyday Air Max’s, Skechers or something.

Best Joy-Con Alternatives

Hori Nintendo Switch Split Pad Pro

Let’s face it: The Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons aren’t really grippy to use, especially for long hours of gaming. However, the Hori Nintendo Switch Split Pad Pro attaches to the console for a more comfortable experience. It actually has a proper D-Pad on it instead of four directional dots like the Nintendo Switch.

Best Pro COntroller

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

Although the Nintendo Switch comes with a Joy-Con holder when gaming in dock mode, it’s not comfortable to use. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is traditional and more enjoyable to use, while it still has the same motion features as two Joy-Cons. It even has a real D-Pad on its front.

This is the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 for the week dated January 20. Slipping to 10 is Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night.” While Doja Cat moves up a spot to 9. Teddy Swims makes a top 10 entrance at No. 8.

Tetris Kelly
Tyla’s “Water” stays locked at 7 as does SZA’s “Snooze” at 6. “Paint The Town Red” drops a spot to No. 5. And “I Remember Everything” moves up to 4.

Tetris Kelly
Tate McRae holds on to her No. 3 peak. As “Cruel Summer” stays at No. 2 and at No. 1 for a third week is Jack Harlow’s “Lovin On Me.”

Jack Harlow’s ‘Lovin on Me’ & Tate McRae’s ‘Greedy’ Continue Atop Global Charts

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” logs a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, while Tate McRae’s “Greedy” tallies a third week atop the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. survey.

Plus, two songs are new to the Global 200’s top 10: Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” which leaps 22-9, and The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp’s “One of the Girls” (15-10). On Global Excl. U.S., “One of the Girls” also reaches the top 10 (12-7), as does Feid and ATL Jacob’s “Luna” (23-10).

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

‘Lovin on Me’ Leads Global 200 for Second Week

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” tops the Global 200 for a second week, with 52.7 million streams (up 1%) and 10,000 sold (down 6%) worldwide in the Jan. 5-11 tracking week. A week earlier, the song became the rapper’s second No. 1 on the chart, and his first on his own, after his and Jung Kook’s “3D” ruled in its debut week in October.

Tate McRae’s “Greedy” holds at No. 2 on the Global 200, after two weeks at No. 1 beginning in November; Xavi’s “La Diabla” lifts 4-3 for a new high; Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” slips 3-4, following a week on top in November; and Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” becomes his first top five hit, jumping 8-5 with 34 million streams (up 16%) and 3,000 sold (up 11%) worldwide.

Teddy Swims scores his first Global 200 top 10, as “Lose Control” roars 22-9 with 28.3 million streams (up 22%) and 11,000 sold (up 23%) worldwide. The song concurrently becomes the Conyers, Ga., native’s first top 10 on the U.S.-based Billboard Hot 100.

The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp’s “One of the Girls” also hits the Global 200’s top 10, rising 15-10, led by 40.6 million streams (up 11%) worldwide. The song was featured in the fourth episode of HBO’s The Idol and was released after the episode premiered June 23, 2023. Depp starred in the series as rising pop star Jocelyn; The Weeknd (credited under his real name, Abel Tesfaye) played nightclub owner and talent scout Tedros; and Jennie portrayed Dyanne, a backup dancer and friend of Jocelyn. The series aired five episodes on HBO and Max in June-July and, although the show was canceled in August after one season, the song has continued to surge thanks in part to popularity on TikTok.

The Weeknd adds his 11th Global 200 top 10; Jennie, her second; and Depp, her first. Notably, with Jennie as a member, BLACKPINK has posted four top 10s as a group, including the No. 1s “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down” in 2022. All four members of the South Korean group have hit the top 10 solo, totaling six top 10s: previously, Jennie reached No. 7 last October with “You & Me”; Lisa has also logged two solo top 10s, “Lalisa” and “Money,” which hit Nos. 2 and 10, respectively, in 2021; Rosé has earned one top 10, and the first solo leader among the four members, as “On the Ground” began at No. 1 in March 2021; and Jisoo has likewise landed one top 10, “Flower,” which reached No. 2 last April.

McRae Gets ‘Greedy’ Third Week Atop Global Excl. U.S.

Tate McRae’s “Greedy” rules the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a third week, with 39.1 million streams (up 1%) and 1,000 sold (down 9%) outside the U.S. Jan. 5-11. The track became McRae’s first leader on the list in early December.

Xavi’s “La Diabla” holds at its No. 2 Global Excl. U.S. high; Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” ascends 5-3 for a new best; Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” slides to No. 4 from its No. 3 high; and Jung Kook’s “Seven,” featuring Latto, falls 4-5, after it ruled for nine weeks starting upon its debut last July.

The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp’s “One of the Girls” bounds 12-7 on Global Excl. U.S., with 33.6 million streams (up 10%) outside the U.S. The Weeknd achieves his ninth top 10; Jennie, her second; and Depp, her first. With Jennie as a member, BLACKPINK has banked four top 10s as a group, including the No. 1s “Lovesick Girls” in 2020 and “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down.” All four members of BLACKPINK’s have hit the top 10 as soloists, totaling six top 10s: previously, Jennie launched at No. 1 last October with “You & Me”; Lisa has claimed two top 10s, “Lalisa” and “Money,” which hit Nos. 2 and 7, respectively; Rosé has scored one top 10, the No. 1 “On the Ground”; and Jisoo has also tallied one top 10, “Flower,” which reached No. 2.

Elsewhere, Feid and ATL Jacob’s “Luna” soars 23-10 on Global Excl. U.S., with 30 million streams (up 20%) outside the U.S. Feid, from Colombia, adds his third top 10 on the chart and Atlanta’s ATL Jacob posts his first.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated Jan. 20, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Jan. 17 (a day later than usual due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday Jan. 15). For both charts, the top 100 titles are available to all readers on Billboard.com, while the complete 200-title rankings are visible on Billboard Pro, Billboard’s subscription-based service. Cast of ‘Martin’ Reuinte At The Emmys, Tisha Campbell Says The Show Deserved An Award

75th Primetime Emmy Awards - Show

The Emmys were indeed very Black this year, and if you tuned in, you got a treat when the cast of the iconic Fox sitcom Martin hit the stage.

Before hitting the stage, Martin’s cast members teased that something big was coming on television’s biggest night. Forty minutes into the show, the award show that aired on Fox, Sunday night, January 15, Martin Lawrence, Tichina Arnold, Tisha Campbell, and Carl Anthony Payne II hit the stage to present.

It wasn’t a typical awards presentation, and it had that Martin flavor we all love from the classic sitcom episodes that play every night on BET and VH1.

The trio did a bit where Payne II, in character as Cole, believes the trio is there to accept an Emmy, not give one out, leading Martin, Pam, and Gina to correct him hilariously.

In the middle of the bit, Campbell said the one thing fans of Martin have been screaming about for years, even well after the show’s final episode.

“Carl is not all the way wrong, you guys. I mean, we should have won an Emmy during our run,” Campbell said, receiving a large applause from the audience.

Immediately after, Lawrence presented the Lead Actor award in a Comedy Series that went to The Bear’s lead man, Jeremy Allen White.

The Bear as a show had itself a night, winning six Emmys, including Allen White’s Lead Actor win, Best Comedy, Comedy Supporting Actress Ayo Edebiri, Comedy Supporting Actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Directing For A Comedy Series and Writing For A Comedy Series.

HBO’s hit drama Succession also had a big night with six wins, followed by Netflix’s limited series Beef, which won 5 Emmy awards.

Ex-Girlfriend Of Late Rapper Juice WRLD Hawks Vaulted Sex Tape

Juice WRLD, unfortunately, passed away in 2019 and at that time, he was dating Ally Lotti, who operates an OnlyFans page. In an attempt to get ahead of hackers, Lotti is sharing a vaulted sex tape of her and Juice WRLD after she claims the hackers are attempting to extort her.

As reported on TMZ, Ally Lotti shared details of the reported footage featuring herself and Juice WRLD via a statement on Lott’s OnlyFans page.

“F*cked by my famous ex. Hackers are trying to threaten me to leak my old sex tape with my ex fiance Juice WRLD. IDGAF ANYMORE I’LL LEAK IT MYSELF,” read the description of the video.

It continued, “It’s a long time since I have been f*cked rough with some big BLACK C*CK like this. I AM SO MAD THAT I AM ADDING EVERY NUDE I EVER SENT HIM. I know you will at least enjoy it. Can’t believe I am actually sending this but I can’t be threatened anymore.”

From what we can see from the screen capture shared by TMZ, it appears Lotti is selling the footage for $29.99. The move from Ally Lotti is being viewed in poor taste by fans of Juice WRLD, including past collaborators such as Florida rapper Denzel Curry.

J.I.D. Says He’s “Humbled” After ABC News Interview

J.I.D’s been on his rap grizzly for quite some time now and recently the young artist from the Big Peach made some news when, well, he made the news.

A few days ago the “Crack Sandwich” rapper took to his Instagram page to showcase an in-studio interview he did for ABC News in which he spoke about how far he’s come in his career thus far. While he was calm and collected on camera, J admitted in the caption for the post that he felt all the emotions writing “Bruh we made @abcnews 11 year old J.I.D never even dreamed of this!! We humbled and was nervous af, but thankful”

You know once you get interviewed by a news anchor on television you’ve made it.

During the interview J.I.D spoke about making the transition from sports athlete to Hip-Hop artist and not only promised more music for his day-one fans saying he’s “finishing the Metro project,” the 33-year-old also revealed that he’s currently crafting a children’s book.

“It’s called Astrid the Ostrich, an African Bird. I’m still working on it, but it’s just about emotions that a child would go through and I’m doing it my type of way. It’s going to be cool.”

Applaud that man.

When that album with Metro drops remains to be seen but J.I.D is definitely keeping busy and keeping his name hot out on these streets and for that we’re glad to see him finally getting some recognition on prime time.

SXSW 2024: The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney Are Keynotes

The Black Keys are heading to South by Southwest 2024.

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, founding members of the chart-topping blues-rock outfit, will take their positions on stage as keynote speakers, organizers announce today (Jan. 16).

Auerbach, the band’s singer and guitarist, and Carney, the Black Keys’ drummer, will lend their support to the new documentary, This is a Film About The Black Keys, which enjoys its world premiere at the SXSW Film & TV Festival. Directed by Jeff Dupre, the feature-length film is said to trace the band’s journey, which began nearly a quarter century ago as kids jamming in a basement in Akron, OH, and has seen the rockers complete the journey to the biggest stages on the planet.

Along the way, they’ve soaked up commercial and critical success, including six top 10 titles landed on the Billboard 200 chart, with a No. 1 for 2014’s Turn Blue, and six Grammy Awards.

“The impact of artists has made music the foundation of SXSW,” comments Hugh Forrest, chief programming officer and co-president. “For this reason, we’re especially excited to welcome Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, one of the most compelling rock bands around, to the Keynote Speaker lineup for a discussion on their prolific career.”

The rockers are among the big names in the fourth round of featured speakers, a list that includes legendary actress and activist Jane Fonda; three-time NBA champion and Basketball Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade; Twitch CEO Dan Clancy; and Lord of the Rings actor and co-founder of indie production company  SpectreVision, Elijah Wood.

Conference sessions include the panel, “The Transformation of Music Sync: When the Songwriter Becomes the Screenwriter,” and “Death of the Follower & the Future of Creativity on the Web.”

Additional keynote speakers and featured sessions will be unveiled in the coming weeks, reps say.

Founded in 1987 in Austin, TX, SXSW has grown to encompass tech, film and TV, music, education and culture. The entirety of the 2024 conference and festival will run from March 8-16.

In April 2021, it was announced that SXSW signed a “lifeline” deal with P-MRC, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and MRC, making P-MRC a stakeholder and long-term partner with the Austin festival. P-MRC is the parent company of Billboard.
