Hot 100 First-Timers: Dylan Gossett Debuts With Breakthrough Hit ‘Coal’

Dylan Gossett’s breakout single “Coal” arrived on Billboard’s charts last August, and now, after steadily gaining over the past five months, the track reaches the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first entry.

The song debuts at No. 89 on the Jan. 20-dated chart with 5 million official U.S. streams (up 16%) in the Jan. 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate. It also climbs 27-26 on Hot Country Songs, returning to its peak.

Gossett self-released “Coal” on July 27, 2023, after acoustic initial snippets of the song went viral on TikTok — one such clip has generated more than 6 million views on the platform. After releasing the full song on streaming services, it debuted on the Country Digital Song Sales chart following its first full week of activity.

The song later appeared on Gossett’s debut six-track EP, No Better Time, which he likewise self-released on Oct. 27. In addition to recording the songs himself, he also wrote, produced and mixed the entire EP from his bedroom in Austin, Texas. The set has since reached No. 6 on Heatseekers Albums, No. 17 on Americana/Folk Albums and No. 39 on Top Country Albums.

The release drew the attention of several major labels, and in November Gossett signed with Big Loud Texas/Mercury Records in collaboration with Range Media Partners — Big Loud Texas recently launched as a venture between Miranda Lambert, Jon Randall and Big Loud Records. A month later, Gossett signed with UTA for global representation.

“Tyler [Arnold] and Jake [Levensohn] from Mercury flew down to Texas to meet with me, and we instantly clicked,” Gossett told Billboard of his signing. “After meeting with Jon, Miranda and Seth [England] from Big Loud, it was a dream scenario to be able to combine forces and do this all together as a team.”

Though he released “Coal” in July, Gossett wrote the song two years ago and at the time had no plans to make music professionally. His biggest goal was playing for family gatherings at his grandfather’s lake house.

“Whenever holidays like Thanksgiving or Easter come around, my brother, parents, cousins, we all sit around a campfire and pass guitars around,” Gossett told Billboard in November. “Mainly, me, my brother and my cousin would play songs we wrote, but everyone would sing.”

Gossett has since toured with Wyatt Flores, Brent Cobb, Kolby Cooper and Luke Grimes, and beginning Jan. 17, he’ll open for Noah Kahan at six sold-out shows in Australia. Up next, his first headlining trek, the No Better Time Tour, kicks off next month in Dublin and runs through April.

Dua Lipa Calls for ‘Humanitarian Cease-Fire’ in Gaza

Since the escalation of the Israel-Hamas war in the fall, Dua Lipa has been a fervent political advocate, and in her new Rolling Stone cover story, the “Levitating” singer opened up more about her stance.

“My existence is kind of political, the fact that I lived in London because my parents left from the war,” she explained, in reference to her Albanian parents. “I feel for people who have to leave their home. From my experience of being in Kosovo and understanding what war does, no one really wants to leave their home. They do it for protection, to save their family, to look after the people around them, that kind of thing, for a better life. So I feel close to it.”

She continued, “My feelings on displaced people [are] very real and raw, and it is a difficult subject to speak about because it’s so divisive.”

The conflict between Israel and Palestine escalated after the horrific Oct. 7 terror attack on the Supernova Music Festival at Kibbutz Re’im by Hamas militants. The assault by air and land by the militant arm of the terrorist organization that governs the more than two million Palestinians who live in the Gaza Strip included the killing of more than 260 revelers and many more kidnapped at the Paralello Universo Supernova Sukkot Gathering electronic dance music festival celebrating the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah.

That same month, Lipa joined a number of other celebrities to sign an open letter urging President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. “At the moment, what we have to look at is how many lives have been lost in Gaza, and the innocent civilians, and the lives that are just being lost. There are just not enough world leaders that are taking a stand and speaking up about the humanitarian crisis that’s happening, the humanitarian cease-fire that has to happen,” Lipa told Rolling Stone.

'Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth' Gets A New Trailer

Source: Square Enix / Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth

We already knew Final Fantasy VII Remake was not just a rehash of the original game with a fresh coat of next-gen paint but a complete reimagining of what many consider the greatest RPG ever made. When Rebirth arrives, you can expect the same and then some.

A new trailer for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is here to excite us for a game we already can’t wait to play. The two-disc JRPG is upon us, and it will remix the beats from the original game that were engrained in our brains and, at the same, add some new twists to the story.

The usual suspects like Cloud Strife, Aerith, Cid, Red XIII, Barrett, Tifa, Cait Sith, plus Yuffie and Vincent are all back and are teaming up to save the world from Sephiroth.

In the original game, Yuffie and Vincent were optional characters, but in Rebirth, they will be a part of the primary team. The new trailer teases the big showdown with the legendary soldier turned wannabe destroyer of humanity.

It also teases possible changes to the original, like possibly confirming that Zack survived the epic battle and his being essential to Rebirth’s story.

Will There Be A Major Death In Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth?

Also, Aerith could be alive this time (spoiler alert); she died in the US version of the original game, much to players’ chagrin.

But, we still could be getting a significant death, and many believe it will be fan favorite Tifa who bites the dust this time around because of particular clips possibly showing her dying.

Again, we don’t know if this is the case, but we know producer Yoshinori Kitase is not afraid to have us clutch our pearls and be in our feels while playing his games.

By heading here, you can peep our interview with Kitase ahead of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Hit the gallery below for more screenshots from Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, which arrives exclusively on PlayStation 5 on Feb. 26.

Witness To History Podcast: D.L. Chandler & Alvin Blanco Talk 5 Decades of Hip-Hop

Witness to History D.L. & aqua

Source: Hip-Hop Wired / iOne Digital

As the Witness To History podcast chugs along, Hip-Hop Wired decided to look at 50 years of our beloved genre from a fan’s, participant’s and journalist’s perspective. For the latest episode, Senior Editor D.L. Chandler and Director of Content Alvin aqua Blanco chatted about what the culture means to them along with attempting to recap some of the best moments, artists, and more over its five-decade lifetime.

Recapping 50 years of Hip-Hop is frankly an impossible feat, but we did manage to key in on some topics and MC”s we think didn’t get enough burn during the run-up up the culture’s milestone birthday this past August. Regardless, we’ll only continue to big up the best of Hip-Hop, and with a critical eye when necessary until it hits 51 and beyond.

The convo was so fluid we decided to break up the episode into two parts. Tap in above and below. And be sure to check out past Witness To HIstory episodes right here.

Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean Make Impromptu Road Trip & Dairy Queen Stop After Cold Temps Ground Plane

What was expected to be a 30-minute flight from St. Louis, Mo., ended up being an impromptu road trip for Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan.

Bryan shared the video of their trip in a rental car via Instagram on Friday (Jan. 12), detailing how they ended up taking a rental car after cold temperatures impacted the plane’s instruments mid-flight.

As Bryan and Aldean pulled up to a Dairy Queen to place their drive-thru orders, Bryan said, “Jason and I were flying out of St. Louis when we had some issues traveling with the plane. So we rented a car to go to duck camp. We’re at a Dairy Queen.”

“Because our plane, we thought was going to fall out of the sky,” Aldean said, as Bryan started laughing.

“We duck hunted this morning, we flew to St. Louis this morning, we landed, we did the ATA show with Buck Commander.”

“We were supposed to get back on the plane,” Aldean said, “fly back and it was supposed to be a 30-minute flight. Easy, easy.”

“We took off, and it was so cold in St. Louis, it was like 16 degrees, wind was blowing 40 miles an hour. Some of the instruments on the plan were not … so we had to turn around and land and yeah, it was a little tense,” Bryan said. “So now we’re on I-55 at a Dairy Queen.”

“‘Cause it’s the only thing on the exit,” Aldean said.

“We’re getting some chicken fingers. I just peed beside the road, and Jason’s the driver,” Bryan said, bantering with Aldean.

“That’s ’cause I don’t trust you to drive, actually,” Aldean shot back.

For those curious, Aldean ordered a cheeseburger with “cheese and pickles only,” as well as a basket of chicken tenders, fries and a Coca-Cola, while Bryan ordered “a No. 1 with a Coke.” Their drive-thru meal cost $29.78 — and Bryan paid the tab.

The Luny Tunes-produced track enters the top 10 in its 10th week with 7.7 million audience impressions (up 33%) earned in the U.S. during the Jan. 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate.

“Sandunga” was released on Nov. 2 via Omar’s indie label Sugar Cream, marking his first drop after the reggaetón icon parted ways with Saban Music.

Thanks to “Sandunga,” the indie imprint nabs its first top 10 on the overall Latin Airplay tally. Previously, “Navidad Pa’ La Calle” took the company to a No. 42 high in 2020. The label, however, scored its first top 10 on any Billboard chart when “Navidad” peaked at No. 5 on Tropical Airplay in Dec. 2020

“Sandunga” is also first charting collab from Don Omar and Wisin & Yandel since 2007, when “No Se De Ella (My Space)” reached No. 20.

Further, “Sandunga” earns Don Omar his 21st top 10 on Latin Airplay. The Puerto Rican rapper was last in the top 10 with the chart-topping “Podemos Repetirlo,” with Chencho Corleone, leading for one week last September.

Wisin & Yandel, meanwhile, up their career count to 29 top 10s as a duo, the fourth-most among Latin rhythm acts since the Latin Airplay chart launched in 1994. Among Latin rhythm acts on Latin Airplay, Daddy Yankee has the most top 10s, with 49. Here’s a look at the Latin rhythm acts with the most top 10s on Latin Airplay:

  • 49, Daddy Yankee
  • 41, J Balvin
  • 38, Ozuna
  • 29, Wisin & Yandel
  • 28, Bad Bunny
  • 28, Maluma

In addition to its new top 10 on Latin Airplay, “Sandunga” holds steady at its No. 6 high on Latin Rhythm Airplay for a third week.

Travis Barker Makes Out With Kourtney Kardashian on Emmys Red Carpet: See the Photo

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker aren’t about to let photographers, video cameras and A-list party guests stop them from packing on the PDA. At this year’s Emmys Monday (Jan. 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the couple did a bit of French kissing while walking the red carpet, their first since welcoming their 3-month-old son, Rocky Thirteen.

The pair matched in dark sunglasses and black suits, with the Lemme founder sporting leathery gloves. Kardashian and the Blink-182 drummer have earned a reputation for getting physical in public settings, so those in attendance probably weren’t all that surprised when the couple started touching tongues while posing for pictures at the event.

Later, Barker helped open the ceremony by performing Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” on the drums during host Anthony Anderson‘s opening monologue, which paid tribute to Miami Vice. “I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life….,” he tweeted afterward. “I just played the most famous drum fill of all time at The Emmy’s. I love you Phil Collins ?”

Barker and Kardashian have had a lot to celebrate recently. In November, the couple welcomed Rocky into their blended family after documenting their fertility journey on Hulu’s The Kardashians. The little boy is their first child together, with both stars having children from past relationships.

The single earns Azteca its fifth No. 1 at the format, after “La Luna de Miel” (2022) and three leaders by La Maquinaria Norteña: “50 y Cincuenta” (2022), “Eres Ese Algo” (2023) and “Te Quiero Ver” (2023).

La Fiera De Ojinaga has charted 16 songs at the Regional Mexican Airplay format. Of those, seven have reached the top 10. Here’s a recap, listed chronologically:

Former Elektra Entertainment co-president Mike Easterlin, along with former Atlantic Records GM/senior vp of A&R Steve “Stevo” Robertson, serve as co-presidents of Severance Records. The new label launches with flagship signing Dexter and The Moonrocks, who are booked by WME’s Mike Krug, and managed by Lion’s Claw Entertainment’s Chris Schoemann, and Joe Greenwald (Marketing & Promotion).

“Stevo and I could not be more excited to be joining the Big Loud family,” Easterlin said in a statement. “(Big Loud Partners) Seth (England), Joey (Moi), Craig (Wiseman), and (Big Loud Rock / Big Loud Management Partner + President) Greg (Thompson) have been so supportive from the first time we met about building this partnership together. Watching the company that Big Loud has become in the country space only drives Stevo and I to want to make Severance Records the same kind of force in the alternative space. Our goal is to be rooted in Nashville, but global in vision.”

Prior to his work as co-president of Elektra, Easterlin had worked as president and GM at two of the company’s labels – Fueled By Ramen and Roadrunner Records. His career also includes roles at Virgin Records and Island Def Jam. Along the way, he’s worked with artists including Smashing Pumpkins, Lenny Kravitz, Nickelback, Panic! At The Disco, Paramore and Bailey Zimmerman.

During his 25-year tenure at Atlantic Records, Robertson signed Shinedown, Paramore, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Knox and A Day to Remember, and helped develop artists including GAYLE, Collective Soul, Seven Mary Three, Matchbox 20 and more.

“I’m a fan of so much of the music Mike and Stevo have discovered and promoted throughout their careers,” Big Loud Partner / Producer / President of A&R Joey Moi said in a statement. “Working with them on building and establishing some incredible new rock and alternative acts is something we’re all really looking forward to.”

“Mike and Stevo have championed some of the most exciting, culture-driving music of the last two decades, so when the opportunity to work with them in this capacity came up, it was an instant ‘yes,’” Big Loud partner and CEO Seth England said in a statement. “We’re grateful to partner with them and build a legacy together with Severance.”

“When Mike (Easterlin) and I laid the groundwork for Severance Records, we were driven by a genuine love for rock music and an instinct to follow its evolving path,” Robertson said in a statement. “In an industry that seemed to have momentarily turned away from rock, we felt a strong undercurrent – a shift back towards the authentic sounds of guitars and raw attitude. Dexter and The Moonrocks struck a chord with us immediately. While being influenced by greats like Nirvana and Kings Of Leon, they’re a bridge to the future of rock, blending influences from rock legends and contemporaries like Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Colter Wall. Their sound is the DNA of Severance Records – rediscovering and redefining rock with a fresh perspective, especially with a nod to Southern roots.

“We’re shaping a unique culture. Our focus is alternative – alt-rock, alt-pop, alt-country, and indie rock. We’re drawn to authentic, unconventional sounds. Dexter and The Moonrocks are at the forefront of that. As our first signing, they represent the distinct sound of Severance Records.”
