Artists With the Most BRITs Nominations in a Single Year: RAYE, Robbie Williams, Dua Lipa & More

Here’s every artist who has earned at least five BRIT Awards nominations in a single year.

Just over a year since she earned her very first U.K. No. 1 single with the 070 Shake-assisted “Escapism,” British singer-songwriter RAYE has broken the record for most BRIT Awards nominations in a single year with a whopping seven nods at the 2024 ceremony. Not only does RAYE stand as this year’s most-nominated artist, she is also the first act to earn seven nominations in a single ceremony since the BRITs’ inception in 1977.

“I am completely floored to be recognised seven times this year,” RAYE said of her historic nominations haul in a press release. “I was a BRIT school student and I remember how deeply I dreamed of one day being recognised at the BRITs. I am currently a mess of overwhelming emotions and confusion as to how this even happened to be honest.”

Despite the gravity of the moment, this is not the first time that the BRITs have recognized RAYE and her work. In 2018, “You Don’t Know Me,” her collaboration with Jax Jones reaped a bid in the British single of the year category. She appeared in the lineup for that same category twice more with “Secrets” (with Regard) and “Bed” (with Joel Corry and David Guetta) in 2021 and 2022, respectively. In 2022, she also earned her first solo BRIT Awards nomination: best dance act. Although she came up short in those four races, RAYE is well-poised to take home her first BRIT statuette come Mar. 2.

During Bring on The BRITs with Mastercard: The 2024 Nominations, the exclusive live stream revealing the 2024 nominations hosted by Yinka Bokinni, RAYE gushed, “A year and a half ago… as far as the industry was concerned, I was down and out. Never in my wildest dreams would I think like trying again would mean seven BRIT nominations… I’ve had some nominations in the past which I’ve been so grateful… This is a whole different thing. Just thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

In celebration of RAYE’s achievement, here are all of the times a musical act has earned at least five nominations in a single year at the BRIT Awards.

Taylor Swift’s Alleged Stalker Released From NYPD Custody After First Court Hearing

A man arrested and charged with stalking Taylor Swift outside her Manhattan home has been released from police custody on supervised release after an arraignment hearing on Wednesday (Jan. 24).

David Crowe, 31, was arrested both Saturday and Monday outside Swift’s TriBeCa apartment building. Manhattan prosecutors, who charged the man with one count of stalking and two counts of harassment, say Crowe has been seen at the location more than 30 times since November.

At his first court hearing on Wednesday, a judge ordered Crowe released from custody but issued a protection order barring him from trying to contact Swift and imposed supervision to ensure that he abides by the order and returns to court for his next hearing.

The charges against Crowe were not eligible for bail under New York law, but prosecutors had urged the judge to impose “supervised release at the highest possible tier and level.”

“The defendant’s continued conduct in showing up to this location despite numerous directives to leave shows a clear risk that the defendant will not abide by court orders to return to court,” Harriet Jiranek told the judge at the hearing. “Based on the conduct in this case, the defendant should be under some level of supervision to ensure he abides by the order of protection and returns to court as directed.

Crowe was first arrested on Saturday afternoon, police say, after they responded to a 911 call regarding a “disorderly person” near Swift’s apartment. Crowe had allegedly “attempted to open a door to a building at the location” and was taken into custody on a previous arrest warrant.

Then on Monday evening, witnesses reported an “emotionally disturbed male acting erratically” near the same location, police say; officers then spotted Crowe “harassing multiple complainants” and he was taken into custody.

In charging documents, prosecutors say that a security guard for an unnamed individual — presumed to be Swift — reported that Crowe has been spotted near Swift’s apartment roughly 30 times since late November and that on multiple occasions he had stated that he was there to speak to the same unnamed individual. The security guard reported that he had “asked the defendant not to approach the building or to leave the immediate area surrounding the building” on 10 separate occasions.

If convicted of the charges — all misdemeanors — Crowe faces up to three months in prison for both the stalking count and the harassment in the first degree count. If convicted of his third count, of harassment in the second degree, Crowe faces up to a year in prison.

Swift’s publicist did not immediately return a request for comment on the incident. Crowe could not immediately be located for comment.

X Clowns Article Explaing Swag Surf After Taylor Swift Butchered It

Did we lose another recipe? X users believe the Swag Surf has been gentrified after Taylor Swift and co’s flavorless attempt at the dance.

The world’s most famous Chiefs fan, Taylor Swift (insert sarcasm), has become a fixture of NFL Sunday conversations. Usually, most of the conversation is about cameras constantly cutting to Swift and her friends to see the ridiculously popular singer’s reactions to whatever her beau, Travis Kelce, does something on the field.

That continued to be the case during the Chiefs NFL Wild Card matchup with the Miami Dolphins this past weekend. Swift once again went viral for her custom Nike puffer jacket to battle the extreme cold and her flavorless attempt at doing the Swag surf.

A clip shared on the Sunday Night Football official account on X, formerly Twitter, showed the “Bad Blood” singer butchering the dance made famous by Fast Life Yungstaz for their song “Swag Surfin.”

The jokes were immediate, and so were the fears that melanin-deficient publications and websites would somehow credit Taylor Swift for the song’s popularity, and as expected, that happened.

Black Twitter, yes, we are still calling it that was up in arms after Sporting News dropped an article with the headline:

“What is Swag Surfin? Everything to know about Chiefs’ viral dance celebration as Taylor Swift, Donna Kelce participate.”

The article literally broke down the dance and eventually had to be updated with the dance originating in Atlanta.

Even Plies chimed in on the matter.

“I Luv Seeing Taylor Swift & The Kansas City Chiefs Rock Out To “Swag Surfing” On Sundays. But Media Let’s Stop Acting Like They Created It! Let’s Give Props To F.L.Y, Atlanta & The HBCU Community For Birthing The Phenomenon!!” the rapper said in a post on X.

Not one lie detected in Plies post.

We are sure Taylor Swift meant no harm, but boy, did they try it.

You can see more reactions in the gallery below.

2. He definitely tried it

1999 The Future’s Warren Hue laced up some skis for the first time to hit the “SLOPES” with Offset for their snowy visual.

The 88 Rising artist recruited Offset for the thumping “SLOPES” last week, and Hue took a ski lift to cruise down the mountain for a pair of woozy verses.

“I need a crib up in Soho, New Yorkie like Biggie/ I trеated ‘Chella like that sh– no biggiе/ Still got the pac, hella smoke in my city/ Hit from the back, now you texting you miss me/ B—h, I got bands and it’s stuck in my pants, woah/ Feel me? Hue gave fans a peek behind the curtain of the Mamesjao-directed video, which finds the use of a green screen allowing him to execute all kinds of flips and ski tricks without having to lift a foot.

The Indonesian rapper then passes his skis to Offset who doesn’t appear in the trippy visual but still delivers a pair of hard-hitting verses. The Migos rapper predicts his next album will top the Billboard charts and manifests an upcoming arena tour.

“Album going number one, I could taste it (Number one)/ I was born up a star, I’m an alien (Star)/ I’ma sell out arenas and the stadiums/ I got my gang and my family, I ain’t trading ’em,” he boasts.

While it remains to be seen about the prospects of his next LP, Offset is hitting the road for his first solo tour sans Migos running mates Quavo and the late Takeoff.

The Set It Off Tour will kick off in Philadelphia in March and make stops in New York City, Boston, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston before wrapping up in his hometown of Atlanta.

1999 Write The Future has set the stage for the collective’s debut album later this year with singles like “MiNt cHoCoLaTe” featuring BADBADNOTGOOD and Griselda’s Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine. Last week, they followed up by teaming Rick Ross a.k.a Ricky Ravioli with Rich Brian for the starry “LiGhT rAiLs.”

Mocktails & Sober Spaces: Inside the Concert Biz’s Push for Inclusivity (And More Revenue)

As alcohol consumption declines among young adults and awareness about the mental health benefits of sobriety grows, nonalcoholic cocktails could prove key to finding new food and beverage revenue for the concert business.

In 2023, CMA Fest, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Danny Wimmer Presents’ Louder Than Life and Bourbon & Beyond were among a dozen festivals to include mocktails and sober spaces at their events; Live Nation introduced the “no-jito” to its venue menus; and Oak View Group launched an elevated nonalcoholic beverage program at its Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, Calif. And while conventional wisdom held that nonalcoholic drinks beyond soda and water would diminish alcohol sales, venues are finding that’s not the case.

“Since launching the mocktail program, our alcohol sales have remained steady, and overall beverage sales have increased by a margin that we are very pleased with,” says Daniel Griffis, president of global partnerships at Oak View Group. It has gone so well that OVG plans to start rolling out the program at other venues.

After launching in October in the premium level and expanding to the entire arena in January, Acrisure has sold more than 2,000 mocktails at $14 each — including the Blackberry Smash and the Firebirds Spritz, which use Lyre’s nonalcoholic spirits — says John Page, senior vp of Acrisure Arena, AHL team Coachella Valley Firebirds and OVG360 Facilities. “There have been a lot of positive comments that we are recognizing people that want to really experience the live event and have something different in terms of the beverage space, not soda or water,” he says. “This is one way that we can continue to show that we are aware and we have something for everyone in the venue.”

These activations were all launched in partnership with the nonprofit Stand Together and its 1 Million Strong initiative founded with sober community The Phoenix. They follow an open letter published in Billboard in January 2023 that featured 50 music industry leaders pledging support to 1 Million Strong.

“What I am excited to see, a year after, are those people actually doing it,” says Colette Weintraub, head of Stand Together Music, Sports & Entertainment.

At Live Nation, the initiative has brought a new corporate focus as well. Last May, the concert giant launched its Sober Nation program focused on fostering sober-inclusivity and destigmatizing addiction at their venues and offices. On Jan. 30 the company will host a Grammy-week brunch with 1 Million Strong and DMC of Run-DMC to raise awareness among staff and connect employees to available recovery and mental health resources.

On Jan. 30 the company will host a Grammy-week brunch with 1 Million Strong and DMC to raise awareness among staff and connect employees to available recovery and mental health resources.

For an industry that places a lot of emphasis on alcohol — from beverage sales to alcohol sponsors — Weintraub says the initiative has received a warm welcome so far. “We’re not saying ‘sober music industry,’ ” she says. “We’re saying this is an opportunity to expand and open the doors to more people and let more people participate in what’s important in life and supporting more people in achieving their full potential.”

Hillary Clinton on ‘Barbie’ Oscar Snubs for Margot Robbie & Greta Gerwig: ‘It Can Sting’

Barbie director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie were famously snubbed in the 2024 Oscar nominations, which were announced on Tuesday (Jan. 23). On Wednesday, they heard from a woman who knows a thing or two about having to deal with a crushing disappointment: Hillary Clinton.

“Greta and Margot,” Clinton began her message to her 6.2 million Instagram followers. “While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You’re both so much more than Kenough.” The missive was signed “#HillaryBarbie.”

Clinton won “the box office” in the 2016 presidential election, receiving 65.9 million votes to just 63 million for her rival, Donald Trump. But presidential elections are decided in the Electoral College, where Trump received 304 votes to 227 for Clinton.

Gerwig and Robbie won “the box office” in a more literal sense. Barbie was the biggest hit of 2023 both in the U.S. and around the world. And it did pretty well overall in the Oscar nominations, with eight nods. But Gerwig was passed over for a best director nod and Robbie, who played Barbie to pink perfection, was passed over for a best actress nod.

Both women are nominated in other categories. Gerwig is nominated for best adapted screenplay in tandem with her husband and creative partner Noah Baumbach. And Robbie is nominated for best picture as one of the producers of the film. But those nominations, while welcome, don’t completely take the sting out of being passed over in these other categories.

There was no equivalent “consolation prize” for Clinton in the 2016 election. Elections are all-or-nothing affairs and Clinton got nothing – except perhaps for something she hinted at in her self-description in her Instagram profile: “doting grandmother, among other things.” Losing the White House gave her more time to dote on her three grandchildren: Charlotte, Aidan and Jasper.

Kanye West Hints at Daughter North West’s First Music Video on Instagram

Looks like Miss Westie is getting a music video!

Kanye West took to Instagram on Wednesday (Jan. 24) to tease a video for his daughter North West‘s feature on his upcoming Vultures album. “TALKING VIDEO TREATMENT BY YOUR BESTIE MS MS WESTIE,” the rapper captioned the photo, which featured a preliminary music video treatment including photos of cars, Malibu, athletes, religious imagery and, of course, vultures.

In a follow-up video, the 10-year-old — whom Ye shares with ex-wife Kim Kardashian — runs through her idea for the music video. “I’m in my Lamborghini driving over to basketball practice, driving in the front seat just by myself […] I do some basketball practice, and then it’s all my friends in Vultures merch with one vulture flying around,” North begins, as she runs through the lyrics of the song and how they correspond in various scenes dining at Nobu Malibu, fighting off paparazzi and more. In December, North dropped by her father’s listening party for his joint Vultures album with Ty Dolla $ign. At the event, she took the stage and lip-synced along to her verse on a track called “You Don’t Want (North Interlude),” according to Genius. “I love it here / We’re gonna take over another year / It’s your bestie Miss, Miss Westie. Don’t try to test me / It’s gonna get messy / Just, just bless me, bless me / It’s your bestie Miss, Miss Westie,” she proclaims on the song.

Vultures is currently slated to arrive on Feb. 9, barring any setbacks or change-of-heart from the star.

Reneé Rapp & Megan Thee Stallion Parlay ‘Mean Girls’ Success into Streaming Hit

https://youtube.com/watch?v=vSEuUelaaks&version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-US&autohide=2&wmode=transparent

It looks like Reneé Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion have made fetch happen. “Not My Fault” — a frothy pop-rap link-up between the movie musical Regina George and the self-proclaimed “Black Regina George” – is making major waves at streaming thanks to the box office success of the new Mean Girls musical and the duo’s pitch-perfect Saturday Night Live performance (Jan. 20).

According to Luminate, “Not My Fault” earned just over three million official on-demand streams during the week of Jan. 12-18, marking a whopping 96% increase from 1.5 million streams during the week of Dec. 29-Jan. 4. “Not My Fault” arrived on DSPs on Dec. 15, about a month before the movie hit theaters on Jan. 12, so the film’s premiere accounts for a significant chunk of that streaming bump.

That bump looks poised to continue growing, based on some of the most recent streaming tallies for the soundtrack single. Last Sunday (Jan. 14), “Not My Fault” garnered just over 380,000 streams. Following that SNL performance – which featured choreography from the music video and an introduction from the OG Regina George, Rachel McAdams – that figure jumped by 33% to over 510,000 streams on Sunday, Jan. 21.

The official music video for “Not My Fault” currently boasts over 6.5 million views on YouTube, and the official TikTok sound plays in over 22,700 posts on the platform. With a box office-topping film and a viral performance in its corner, “Not My Fault” could very well be the first Billboard Hot 100 entry of Reneé Rapp’s career. — KYLE DENIS

A “Beautiful” Breakthrough for Benson Boone

Washington singer-songwriter Benson Boone has flirted with crossover success a couple times already in his career, cameoing in the lower stretches of the Hot 100 with “Ghost Town” (No. 100) in 2021 and “In the Stars” (No. 82) in 2022. But this year, Boone looks to be well on his way to the fastest-starting hit of his still-young career, thanks to the power ballad “Beautiful Things.”

The yearning ballad was one that Boone teased extensively for a month and a half on his TikTok page before its release on Friday (Jan. 19), with snippets that previewed the song’s explosive climax. It built heavy anticipation for the song, which blew up almost immediately upon its debut, as the song bounded to the top of the iTunes chart and finished towards the top of both Spotify’s and Apple Music’s daily charts for its day of release.

In all, the song has amassed over 8.6 million official on-demand U.S. streams through its first four days (Jan. 19-22) of its release, according to early reports from Luminate, as well as nearly 4,800 digital song sales. Those are both phenomenal numbers for half a debut week — particularly for an artist without extensive commercial history behind them — and they suggest a Hot 100 debut that should pretty easily outpace Boone’s first two entries on the chart, and one with the potential to grow into one of the biggest breakout hits of the new year if it can keep up its early momentum. — ANDREW UNTERBERGER

Honestav Pulls On TikTok’s Heartstrings With Fast-Rising “I’d Rather Overdose

Honestav & Z’s “I’d Rather Overdose” growing into a streaming hit by way of a TikTok trend – and there’s no dancing involved this time.

Known by many on the app for his portrayal of the “broke boyfriend” character, Honestav tapped into something a bit more serious for “I’d Rather Overdose.” Somewhere between Post Malone and Noah Kahan with a dash of The Kid LAROI, “I’d Rather Overdose” explores the complexities of being in a codependent relationship with an addict. “When you’re fucked up on them pills you can’t hear me cry/ Without them you’re sick and we both know why/ Pint after pint ‘till the well runs dry/ If only you loved me like you love gettin’ high,” Honestav sings. The song has quickly been embraced by TikTok users on their own sobriety journeys, those grieving loved ones they’ve lost to substance abuse and those who are children of parents who suffered from various addictions.

“I’d Rather Overdose” garnered 1.1 million official on-demand streams during the three-day period of Jan. 20-22, according to Luminate. That marks an eye-popping 345% increase from the period of Jan. 13-15, during which the song collected just over 248,000 streams. Honestav first previewed the song – which he wrote based on his own experiences living with his parents’ addictions — in a Jan. 9 TikTok and fans quickly launched onto the song’s raw lyrics and sound. Now, the song’s official TikTok sound boasts over 16,800 posts, and its official music video has garnered over 65,000 views in just five days. It may be early in the song’s journey, but its growth is already explosive. — KD

Legendary songwriter and Country Music Hall of Famer Dean Dillon has signed a global publishing deal with River House Artists in partnership with Sony Music Publishing.

Dillon, who was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2021, is known for his long association with George Strait. He has written more than 70 Strait hits, including “The Chair,” “I’ve Come to Expect It From You,” “Easy Come, Easy Go” and “The Best Day.” Dillon was named the BMI Country Icon in 2013, and he has amassed a combined total of 31 BMI Country and Pop Awards. In 2011, he was nominated for a Grammy for country song of the year for Strait’s “Breath You Take.” Most recently, he was named a nominee for the 2024 Songwriters Hall Of Fame induction.

Dillon moved to Nashville in 1973. In addition to his songs for Strait, he also co-wrote such hits as Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius’ “Lying Here in Love With You,” which reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart in 1979, and George Jones‘ “Tennessee Whiskey,” which has gone on to become a signature song for Chris Stapleton.
