Lil Nas X Is Ready for Something New on Reflective ‘Where Do We Go Now’: Stream It Now

He came back like “J Christ” — now Lil Nas X wants to figure out what happens next.

On Friday (Jan. 26), the pop singer unveiled his latest song “Where Do We Go Now,” a poignant slow-jam that poses its titular question to remarkable effect. Stepping away from his signature tongue-in-cheek braggadocio, Lil Nas X spends the entirety of the soft-rock ballad looking for guidance as he tries to see a path forward in his life — both personal and professional.

“So where do we go now?/ We’ve seen everything we had to see/ We figured it out, my love/ So where are we goin’,” he sings on the emotive chorus. “So where do we go now?/ We did everything so endlessly/ And only to feel undone/ So where are we goin’?”

The new track first appeared in the credits sequence of the singer’s new documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero, sung over video clips of fans at the Long Live Montero tour as they enter and exit the show. The film, which originally debuted at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, is set for a wide release on HBO this Saturday (Jan. 27).

Long Live Montero follows Lil Nas X over the course of 60 days, as he embarks on his first-ever headlining tour. Amid clips of his high-production performances throughout the show’s run, the film examines the rapper’s lightspeed ascent to fame with “Old Town Road,” and examines how his new role as a chart-topping Black queer artist has fundamentally changed his life.

Megan Thee Stallion Bares Her Fangs on New Single ‘Hiss’: Stream It Now

Let the snake saga continue. Just two months after launching her new era with the rock-tinged “Cobra,” Megan Thee Stallion has returned with her first solo offering of 2024: “Hiss.”

Co-produced by LilJuMadeDaBeat and Bankroll Got It, “Hiss” addresses all of the unwarranted opinions on her life and image that have hounded her for the past few years. The Stallion first teased “Hiss” on Monday (Jan. 22) with a graphic revealing the track’s title, and by Wednesday (Jan. 24), she followed up the announcement with a fiery voiceover that set the scene for what audiences should expect from the song.

“I just wanna kick this s–t off by saying, ‘F–k y’all!” she exclaims in the clip. “I ain’t gotta clear my name on a motherf–kin’ thang. [Every time] I get mentioned, one of y’all b—h a– n—as get 24 hours of attention. I’m finna get this s–t off my chest and lay it to rest, let’s go!”

“Hiss” continues the serpentine theme of Megan’s last solo release, 2023’s “Cobra.” That track served as her first independent single since leaving 1501 Certified Entertainment. The song peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became her eighth top 10 hit on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (No. 10). In the interim between “Cobra” and “Hiss,” Megan teamed up with Reneé Rapp for “Not My Fault,” the buzzy new single from the Mean Girls movie musical soundtrack. The Regina George crossover has already reached No. 22 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and spawned a viral SNL performance.

Megan Thee Stallion has earned five top 10 titles on the Billboard 200, including 2020’s Good News (No. 2) and 2022’s Traumazine (No. 4). On the Hot 100, the Grammy winner has collected three top 10 hits from 31 career entries: “34+35” (with Ariana Grande and Doja Cat, No. 2), “WAP” (with Cardi B, No. 1) and the Beyoncé-assisted “Savage” (No. 1)

Morgan Wallen Fights Back Against Early EP Reissue by Re-Recording ‘Spin You Around’: ‘This Is Not My New Music’

Morgan Wallen is surprising fans with a re-recorded version of an older fan favorite, announcing a song called “Spin You Around (1/24 Version)” coming out Thursday night (Jan. 25). While it’s a welcome treat for fans, Wallen is also attempting to thwart what he calls “the dark side of the music business.”

Via Instagram, Wallen explained, “I’m writing y’all from a duck hunting trip because I want to fill you in on something happening tonight. Back in 2014, I went to Florida to try my hand at making original music & songwriting for the first time. This led to a recording deal with a local investor & an artist management deal that I deeply regret. Unfortunately, I signed both deals without any legal representation.”

Wallen noted that they made 13 songs, saying, “Some were ok, most were terrible as I was just learning how to write in general & figuring it all out. I was not the only collaborator, so many of these songs were not my idea nor met my standards. We deemed 5 worthy-enough to make the Stand Alone EP which includes a fan-favorite, ‘Spin You Around.’”

The five-song Stand Alone EP was released in 2015 via Panacea Records.

Wallen continued: “Tonight, those colleagues I parted ways with almost 10 years ago plan to release a ’10th anniversary’ edition of Stand Alone against my wishes & include eight unreleased songs, distributing them with the assistance of my former managers. For months I’ve been exploring every avenue possible to acquire the rights to this old music & keep the quality of my catalog consistent with songs I choose to release & believe in.”

Wallen also called it “an example of how the dark side of the music business can suck the soul out of artists.”

Wallen emphasized: “I want you to know this is NOT my new music, & I don’t want to see this happen to anyone else. I cringe when I listen to these songs & I’m very concerned my fans may mistakenly believe this is a new release by me.”

To counteract the release of that 10th-anniversary project, Wallen recorded his own version of “Spin You Around” this week in Nashville, working with producer Joey Moi and instrumentalist Bryan Sutton. Moi has worked on all three of Wallen’s Big Loud label albums, including 2018’s If I Know Me, 2021’s Dangerous: The Double Album and 2023’s One Thing at a Time, while Sutton has offered his musicianship to of many of Wallen’s songs. Wallen signed with Big Loud in 2016.

Wallen also designed the artwork for the song in the woods while duck hunting.

Additionally, Wallen noted he is donating $100,000 from the Morgan Wallen Foundation to the Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) program.

“I hope young aspiring musicians read this story and know they should never have to give up their creative freedoms for an opportunity in this business,” he said, adding, “Trust me, when new music is ready, you’ll hear it directly from me.”

Wallen also told fans that he begins recording his next album at the end of February. “I’m feeling inspired creatively & super excited to make more music I’m proud of,” he said.

Justin Timberlake Is Ready to Kick Oscar the Grouch’s A** in New ‘SNL’ Promos

Can you tell Justin Timberlake how to get to Sesame Street?

In promos for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, musical guest Timberlake is joined by host Dakota Johnson and SNL‘s Sarah Sherman, and the quirky castmember is lamenting her “Oscar snub.”

“Sorry, I’m just still sad about my Oscar snub,” Sherman says after seeming down.

As Johnson comforts Sherman, Timberlake wonders: “Wait, what movie were you in?”

“No, not that kind of Oscar snub,” Sherman clarifies. “I asked Oscar the Grouch out, and he said, ‘Sorry, honey: I live in the trash, I don’t date it.’”

“You know what?” Timberlake says angrily, invoking the lyrics of the PBS kids’ show’s famous theme song. “Just tell me how to get to Sesame Street and I will beat his a–!”

Elsewhere in the promos, Sherman marvels that “three of the hottest people in the world are on television right now at the same time!” Plus, Sherman promises to bring “SexyBack” — just like Timberlake famously did on his 2006 seven-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit — with a “sketch where our heads explode.” Johnson is onboard: “That’s hot.”

Timberlake has spent a lot of time on the Saturday Night Live stage, doing double-duty as host and musical guest three times, as well as hosting twice and performing once with *NSYNC and once on his own. He’s also earned four Emmys through his SNL work, including outstanding original music and lyrics for his “Di– in a Box” music video with Lonely Island. Timberlake’s last performance on the show was in December 2013.

JT will likely perform his just-released song “Selfish” on Saturday night, the lead single from his upcoming sixth studio album Everything I Thought It Was, but it’s unclear whether he’ll live-debut a second song from the March 15 project or play something we already know.

This will be Johnson’s second time hosting, after her February 2015 debut.

Watch the new promos below, and tune in to NBC or Peacock on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT to catch Johnson and Timberlake’s episode.

Kanye Working on Music Video With North West, Mel B Teases Spice Girls Project & More | Billboard News

50 Cent denies using Ozempic after showing off 40-pound weight loss. Meek Mill says he charges $250,000 for a verse. Kanye West shared a video of his daughter, North West, showing off her ideas for a music video for their collab track off his upcoming album ‘Vultures.’ Justin Timberlake is back: The singer dropped his new track titled “Selfish” and announced a one-night-only show in NYC. Mel B is teasing the Spice Girls’ upcoming project that will feature all five members. Jennifer Lopez is set to be a musical guest on ‘SNL.’ And more!

50 Cent’s weight loss, a North West music video and Meek Mill charges what? JT’s tour, all five Spice Girls and J.Lo on a Saturday — we head over to the Tok for the top songs as we explain the massive success of Alicia Keys and spend some extra time with Julia Michaels.

Tetris Kelly
Hey guys, it’s Tetris and welcome to the Thursday, January 25th, episode of Billboard News. Let’s get busy with three things you should know in hip-hop.

Fans are saying 50 Cent looks like 25 Cent after the iconic rapper is looking much slimmer than usual in an IG post. Users are quick to say he is probably using popular weight loss drug Ozempic. Well, a source told Page Six he’s not on Ozempic and has been on a rigorous training program for eight months. My thoughts are: just be honest. So many people are using it to get skinny now, so just be proud of you — no shame in the game.

Meek Mill has zero shame. The hip-hop heavyweight jumped on Twitter to say, “Every time I do a verse I charge 250k and up if you got 150k on site and I like the song we can swap it out.” 150k down payment — you’re charging them Nicki Minaj prices. Maybe he learned that when they dated, but does a Meek Mill verse help the way a Nicki feature can?

Like father, like daughter: Kanye West has jumped on Instagram to share a storyboard of what seems to be a video he’s working on with daughter North West. He captioned the video: “treatment by your bestie Miss Westie.” I love their bond. North is definitely going to be somebody we see a lot of in the future.

With New Executive Structure, BMG Is Bringing More Resources to the U.S., New Signings — And Hiring, Too

Here’s the first change Jon Loba intends to make, in his new position as BMG’s president of frontline recordings in North America: “Immediately ramping up the A&R team in L.A.”

So the Berlin-based music company is hiring? “Yes. Yes!” Loba says, by phone from the Detroit airport, near his home city north of Grand Rapids, Mich. “News at 10.”

Loba, who has spent the past seven years breaking country superstars such as Jelly Roll, Parmalee, Lainey Wilson and Blanco Brown in his role as the company’s Nashville president, will remain in Music City but broaden to other genres and U.S. cities. “BMG wanted to devote more resources to the U.S., and part of that was to focus even further on frontline, looking at the success we’ve had in Nashville,” says Loba, who plans to travel to L.A. every other week and New York sporadically. “The biggest challenge is keeping everyone patient.”

BMG announced the Loba move Thursday morning (Jan. 25) with a concurrent one for Thomas Scherer, who moves from running publishing and recordings in L.A. and New York to head of global recorded catalog. The move effectively puts Loba in charge of new music and Scherer in charge of classics (while still in charge of publishing). BMG’s CEO, Thomas Coesfeld, took over the company last July and, Loba says, has veered away from the company’s April 2023 announcement that it would combine its frontline and catalog divisions.

“[Coesfeld] is incredibly analytical and had a different take on the business,” Loba says, “and felt the catalog business could benefit from even more focus and being separated out a little bit.”

BMG, part of the Bertelsmann publishing empire, was formerly a standalone label, then merged with major label Sony Music Entertainment before a 2007 uncoupling. It has since beefed up as a music company focused on publishing, acquiring or re-signing catalogs by artists from Paul Simon to Tina Turner, and developed a recorded-music division thanks in no small part to its Nashville office. Loba joined the company in 2017 when BMG purchased BBR Music Group — whose roster included stars Jason Aldean and Dustin Lynch — for $100 million.

Bertelsmann, which recently failed to acquire Simon & Schuster, has pledged to invest billions throughout its companies, giving it considerable clout in a music industry dominated by the three major labels and smaller competitors such as Concord and HYBE. The company’s music divisions will be centered in the United States and the United Kingdom, not so much in Bertelsmann’s Berlin home base. “We are in an absolutely beautiful place,” Loba says. “The catalog allows stability and for us to take chances on frontline. We have the resources and reach of the three majors with the heart and tenacity and focus of an indie. There are few companies, if any, that have both.”

When Loba moves into his new position, effective immediately, he’ll begin expanding the label’s ability to discover and sign new artists. “Internally, for sure, there will be resources added. Our immediate focus is getting that world-class A&R team together, while removing, for the rest of the departments and staff, anything that’s not productive, getting rid of bureaucracy if there is any,” Loba says. “It’s just a real watershed moment for BMG. It’s our coming of age.”

4Batz, Singer Behind Viral Track “act ii: date @ 8,” Sparks Major Label Bidding War

Singer 4Batz, whose track “act ii: date @ 8” erupted on social media and streaming services during Christmas week, has sparked a bidding war among several major labels, sources familiar with the negotiations tell Billboard.

Four years ago, it was routine for previously unknown artists with viral singles to score big record deals in a matter of weeks. But that path slowed to a trickle in 2023, and some label executives started to worry about a stagnant climate for new artists.

That helps explain why many A&R executives are now eager to sign 4Batz. One executive calls the singer’s rapid ascent “the most exciting thing to happen in the last six months” in the music industry. Multiple major labels, including Republic Records, Atlantic Records and Warner Records, are in conversations with 4Batz’s team about a potential deal.

While he has released just two songs to date, they are already earning more than 9 million streams a week in the United States between them, according to Luminate. “act ii: date @ 8” leads the way, climbing to No. 76 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart. Due to this upward momentum, two sources familiar with the label negotiations say they are all but certain to end in a robust seven-figure deal for 4Batz. When another R&B singer, Muni Long, enjoyed a viral breakout with “Hrs and Hrs” late in 2022, her subsequent record deal came with an advance of around $5 million, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

Legal counsel for 4Batz declined to comment.

In the heady early days of TikTok, it was common for half a dozen major labels to compete over a new act with a hot single. From 2019 through at least the end of 2021, this led to big deals for artists like Lil Tecca, Arizona Zervas, Ant Saunders and more. During that period, “it felt like every single day another artist signed a deal that was a gazillion dollars,” one music attorney told Billboard last year.

But as 2022 bled into 2023, fewer unsigned acts surged into view behind singles that streamed like crazy. Executives worried that virality on short-form video platforms no longer sparked listening the way it once did; sometimes what happened on TikTok stayed on TikTok.

At the same time, many label executives became disillusioned with the viral chase. Due to the intense competition around these deals, they invariably ended up being costly. (Though two of the acts who were able to translate viral energy into noteworthy Hot 100 success in 2023, the rapper Superstar Pride and the singer Oliver Anthony, both ended up remaining independent rather than taking a fat check from a major label.) The high cost of the deal put a lot of pressure on young artists to replicate their initial success quickly — to prove they were worthy of a hefty investment in a bottom-line-focused business. Many of the signings were unable to make the leap from popular song to popular artist.

“We’ve all been burned to a certain degree,” Tab Nkhereanye, a senior vp of A&R at BMG, said last year.

As a result, labels have been more circumspect when it comes to signing artists with viral singles in the last 18 months. They’ve also been trying to connect with more acts earlier in their careers via low-cost distribution deals; that way, they have a pre-existing contractual relationship if one of those signings starts to take off. (“act ii: date @ 8” was released through Vydia, a music tech company which is now part of the Larry Jackson-helmed gamma; this marks another win for Vydia, which also brought in Sexyy Red, one of last year’s few genuine breakouts.)

But 4Batz has shown staying power in recent weeks, spending all of January to date near the top of Spotify’s Global Viral 50. “act ii: date @ 8” is hypnotic and loop-able, with feathery come-ons and a slinky bass vamp; it already cracked the top 10 on the Hot R&B Songs chart, leapfrogging established artists like Brent Faiyaz (a clear influence on 4Batz).

R&B is on the upswing at the moment, which is another factor working in 4Batz’s favor. SZA and Victoria Monet dominated the latest Grammy nominations, with Janelle Monae and Coco Jones also scoring nods in the Big Four categories. In R&B, “it’s highly unusual for an artist to come onto the scene with the numbers and interest from labels” that 4Batz has, an executive says. “Normally an artist has to drop more music to get this level of attention.”

Just like the first season — which focused on Bette Davis and Joan Crawford — the drama will delve into another very real, rocky relationship. Except this time it won’t be centered on two actresses; season 2 will be an adaptation of the nonfiction book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer.

From the first episode, you’ll be transported to 1970s high-society Manhattan when author Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) was at the height of his career after publishing In Cold Blood. At the time, he considered his closest friends to be some of New York City’s wealthiest women, whom he called “the swans.” With high society at his fingertips, he quickly becomes the swans’ confidante, but he ultimately betrays them in 1975 when he publishes a scandalous short story titled La Côte Basque, 1965, exposing some of his friends’ innermost secrets to the world. Not only will you be given a look into the lead-up to his publishing, but the aftermath and ultimately the events leading to Capote’s death in 1984.

Starring alongside Hollander is Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Treat Williams, Joe Mantello and Russell Tovey.
