Maroon 5’s ‘Memories’ Joins YouTube Billion Views Club, While ‘Sugar’ Reaches Rarified Air

Maroon 5 had two huge milestones to celebrate this week as two of the Adam Levine-led band’s music videos crossed major YouTube views milestones. First up, the band’s clip for the wistful single “Memories” from their Jordi album reached the one billion views mark.

The 2019 song about lost friends — inspired by the death of the band’s longtime manager Jordan Feldstein — peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The spare visual directed by David Dobkin consists of a close-up shot of a mowhawked, bearded Levine in front of a black background singing the wistful refrain, “Here’s to the one’s that we got/ Cheers to the wish you were here but you’re not/ Cuz the dreams bring back all the memories of everything we’ve been through.”

The camera slowly pulls back to reveal Levine’s head and shoulders as the light fluctuates around him, eventually leaving the singer in the dark and ending with the phrase “For Jordi.”

In addition, the video for their 2014 single “Sugar” hit an even higher peak this week when it moved past four billion YouTube views. The song from the pop group’s fifth album, V — written by Levine along with Mike Posner, Dr. Luke, Jacob Hindlin and Henry Walter — also peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100.

The playful Wedding Crashers-inspired video directed by Dobkin was shot in Los Angeles and found the band seemingly crashing a series of weddings in a single day, tooling around in a vintage convertible and confusing bridges and grooms as they show up with their gear to play impromptu reception concerts to the delight of the gathered friends and families. The five-minute clip ends with Levine saying “this is the coolest thing ever, ever, ever, ever” while high-fiving and hugging a happy couple.

“Sugar” is the band’s first video to put up four billion views, edging ahead of their 2018 single “Girls Like You” (3.5 billion), another billion-view visual for “One More Night” and a handful of clips with 800 million-plus views (“Animals,” “Payphone,” “Moves Like Jagger”).

M5 have been in a lower-power mode since headlining the Super Bowl LIII halftime show in Atlanta in 2019, releasing the one-off singles “Memories,” “Nobody’s Love” (2020), the Megan the Stallion-featuring “Beautiful Mistakes” (2021) and last year’s “Middle Ground” while kicking off a Las Vegas residency at the Park MGM in March 2023. Though they’ve hinted at new music in the years since, M5 have not released a full-length album since 2021’s Jordi.

Their M5LV The Residency at the Dolby Live at Park MGM theater will continue this summer/fall, with 16 scheduled gigs in May, June, September and October.

Usher’s 50 Best Songs: Staff Picks

Before the pop and R&B legend takes the world’s biggest stage this weekend, a look back at the songs that have defined his generational hitmaking career up to this point.

It was always going to happen. Maybe not the Super Bowl gig necessarily — only so many folks get to do that, and things have to break just the right way for it to even be an option — but the general Usherssaince of 2024, where Mr. Raymond once again finds himself among the most vital and celebrated performers in pop and R&B.

Was he ever really gone? Not really, but also kinda — at least more than he ever should have been. From 2017 to 2022, Usher only reached the Billboard Hot 100 three times, never as a solo lead, and never higher than No. 40. For Usher’s last visit of any kind to the chart’s top 10, we have to go back over a decade, to the No. 9-peaking “Scream” in 2012. And it wasn’t just that one chart: His R&B radio success became erratic, his touring level declined from arenas to theaters and his media coverage started focusing less on his new releases and more on his scandals, lawsuits and Usher Bucks.

Some of this might have been inevitable for any superstar in his late 30s and early 40s while in the third decade of his recording career. But Usher isn’t just any superstar: He’s a singular artist who’s had a generational career. He’s had era-defining singles in at least three different top 40 eras. He’s spent a year as the greatest pop star in the world. He want Diamond on sales alone, for an album released a half-decade after Napster’s debut. He has the best friend-crush song of the ’90s, the best cheating song of the ’00s and the best breakup song of the ’10s. He has the greatest singer-playing-themselves film cameo of all time. And though he may have put his superstardom on pause, he never stopped being great: The last 10 years of his career have featured several of his finest singles and most rewarding deep cuts yet. Early-pandemic social media talk theorizing about him battling Justin Timberlake or Chris Brown in a prospective Verzuz was always misguided; when thinking Usher peers, think Beyoncé.

And whether or not he was truly gone, he is now undeniably back. Not only is Usher on the cover of Billboard today, and not only is he headlining the most-watched gig in the world this weekend, but he’s releasing his first proper solo album (Coming Home) in eight years on Friday — and it already has his biggest hit in even longer than that, with the Summer Walker and 21 Savage collab “Good Good.” Plus, after a successful Vegas residency revived his live fortunes earlier this decade, he’ll be heading back out on an arena tour starting this summer — bringing one of the greatest artists of the modern pop era back to the venues where he belongs.

Before all that, though, we wanted to recap the Best of Usher so far: Our staff’s picks for the 50 best songs from the man they call Ursher, baby through his first three decades. We can’t wait for the fourth to get going.

Jack Antonoff Parties With Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, More at 2024 Grammys & Afterparty in New Photos

Jack Antonoff had much cause to celebrate after his big wins at the 2024 Grammys, and celebrate he did indeed. In newly shared photos from the producer, he parties with his close collaborators and fellow nominees Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey as well as poses with Ice Spice, Sabrina Carpenter, Jon Batiste and more at the Grammys and after.

In one of the pictures, posted Tuesday (Feb. 6), Antonoff sticks out his tongue for the camera while the “Anti-Hero” singer, “Munch” rapper and “Butterfly” musician cozy up next to him and producer RIOTUSA. Carpenter, Caroline Polachek and actress Margaret Qualley — the Bleachers frontman’s wife — make appearances throughout his batch of photos, some of which were taken during the ceremony and some of which appear to have been shot at an afterparty.

In a snap from the ceremony, Swift points dramatically at Antonoff’s camera next to a smiling Kelsea Ballerini, with Qualley beaming and Del Rey flashing a peace sign from across their shared table. Another photo finds Del Rey leaning into the frame with a Grammys camera operator; on her own Instagram Story, the “Summertime Sadness” singer explained, “He said he would catch the prettiest shots of me for the telecast.”

Antonoff took home the prestigious producer of the year, non classical golden gramophone at the Sunday (Feb. 4) awards, along with album of the year for his help on Swift’s Midnights. He was nominated in the latter category twice, thanks as well to his production of Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.

The former Fun bandmate is currently gearing up to release his next album with Bleachers, a self-titled project arriving March 8. In September, he dropped the single “Modern Girl,” followed by “Alma Mater” in November and “Tiny Moves” in January. He also shared a music video for the latter track, starring and directed by Qualley.

Usher Slams Anyone Who Told Him ‘R&B Is Dead’

Some fans have been quick to declare R&B “dead,” while Usher has continued to push back against that narrative. And with Grammy-winning stars such as SZA, Victoria Monét and Coco Jones emerging, the R&B dignitary feels the genre is in a great place moving forward.

In a new Billboard cover story by Gail Mitchell, Usher salutes the next generation of R&B artists and says that anyone who ever doubted the genre is off.

“I’m very happy that there’s a new installation of R&B artists who care to be authentic to what they are creating, inspired by artists of the past,” he said. “Everybody who has ever said to me that R&B is dead sounds crazy. Especially when I know the origins of R&B are in all other genres of music.”

“My point is, I never felt like R&B was dying,” Usher doubles down before detailing the evolution of R&B within the ever-changing landscape of the music industry in the streaming era. “I think it just needs expansion. We’re moving toward a standard where people are looking at snippets — TikTok, Instagram and other things — and when fans get it, they take it and do something with it. But if we start to think of it that way and create from that place, the standards for R&B will change. You won’t be able to compare it in an old-versus-new way. It’ll just be what it is.”

The hitmaker offers up another interesting take when it comes to R&B, which he believes needs a commerce makeover for fans to enjoy more tangible items associated with the genre.

“It’s about creating commerce in other spaces. Lovers & Friends is a successful R&B festival that gives you a place to go and celebrate the songs that we make,” he added. “We need things that you associate with R&B that you can buy into. Like with hip-hop — glasses, clothes, cars, jewelry, sneakers … ancillary things that people can access. R&B needs and has the potential to have those things as well.”

February is shaping up to be a banner month for the “Yeah” singer, as Usher will deliver his ninth studio album, Coming Home, on Friday (Feb. 9).

“Every album offers a bit of where I was in my life and what I felt I wanted to share. But this is the first time that I’ve ever felt so comfortable to just be where I am,” he tells Billboard of his upcoming release. “I’m 100% in my skin. And after 30 years, it shouldn’t even be a question about whether this is going to be greater than something in my past. … I’m not thinking of this album in comparison to anything other than what it is: uniquely its own.”

Two days after Coming Home arrives, Usher’s historic weekend will continue when he takes over Sin City to perform at the Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show in Las Vegas on Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium on CBS.

Kelly Rowland Gave Jay-Z Props For Grammys Shout-Out to Beyoncé’s Album of the Year Snubs: ‘Couldn’t Be More Proud of Him’

Kelly Rowland is on team Jay-Z. The Destiny’s Child member and solo star spoke to ET at the red carpet L.A. premiere of the Bob Marley biopic One Love, where she was asked about Jay’s surprise comments castigating the Recording Academy for never awarding wife Beyoncé an album of the year Grammy.

“Shawn Carter [Jay-Z’s real name] is one of the greatest men I know and his words ring so loud to me,” Rowland said. “I couldn’t be more proud of him.” While accepting his Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at Sunday’s Grammys, Jay surprise pivoted to a love/hate sidebar about Bey, who was sitting in the audience at the Crypto.com Arena.

“I’m just saying, we want y’all to get it right. We love y’all; we love y’all; we want you to get it right, or at least get it close to right, and obviously it’s subjective … because it’s music and it’s opinion-based, but some things — I don’t want to embarrass this young lady,” he said referring to Beyoncè. “But she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year, so even by your own metrics that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys and never won an album of the year. That doesn’t work.”

Rowland added, “I’m just really happy for a lot of things that he said. I think that he made a lot of artists feel very seen and very heard in those minutes that he took on stage.”

For the record, Beyoncé has a record 32 Grammy wins on her resumé, but she has never won the coveted album of the year award. “I feel like she is an icon… and that’s for a reason — it’s because she starts trends,” Rowland told ET. “She is innovative, her thoughts are big and bright and she just jumps for them and does it. I think that her albums are a reflection of that, and it should be really celebrated in that way.”

Rowland added that she wasn’t just saying that because Bey is her “sister,” but because “it’s the truth. I’ve seen the blood, sweat and tears that she puts into these projects, and her thoughts and her heart and her passion and her soul.”

Cheek Wars: X Fans Debate Jada Kingdom & Megan Thee Stallion Twerking Skills

66th GRAMMY Awards Pre-GRAMMY Gala & GRAMMY Salute To Industry Icons Honoring Jon Platt - Arrivals

Jada Kingdom continues to try and mind her business as she leans further into her relationship with Pardison Fontaine. However, given Pardi’s famous ex-girlfriend, Megan Thee Stallion, fans are pulling out all the stops to compare the two women and are currently debating their twerking skills.

All of this is very strange behavior but walk with us slowly so that we can catch the readers up. A video from the top of the year featuring Pardison Fontaine with Jada Kingdom dancing has been clipped up next to a video of Megan Thee Stallion dancing.

A clip of the two artists was posted by @YSLONIKA on X, formerly Twitter, and has since gone viral with over 2 million views. Writing “Jada ate her up and she’s fuIIy dressed too,” the post suggests that Kingdom has the superior cheek situation to Hot Girl Meg although both women are beautiful in their own right.

This swiftly turned into the Jada Kingdom vs. Megan Thee Stallion twerking dance battle with some fans on X simply wondering why such a corny debate is kicking off and that we should just be enjoying the sights among other replies.

Kingdom was already in the crosshairs of Meg’s fanbase, The Hotties, after some connected bars from the “COBRA” single to her Jamaican counterpart while making her the target of infidelity rumors in connection to Pardi. Kingdom has since said she was not the woman Megan allegedly walked in on with Pardi and has not addressed the issue since.

On X, we’re watching the very odd debate play out. We’ve got the best reactions we could muster below.

Hipgnosis Shareholders Endorse $25M Incentive for Prospective Catalog Buyers

LONDON — Hipgnosis Songs Fund’s shareholders have voted overwhelmingly in favor of passing a special resolution that authorizes the payment of up to 20 million pounds ($25 million) to prospective bidders seeking to acquire the fund’s assets.

The special resolution was approved by 99.9% of the fund’s shareholders at an extraordinary general meeting held in London on Wednesday (Feb. 7), according to a regulatory filing.

It gives Hipgnosis Songs Fund‘s (HSF) board of directors the power to pay a fee capped at £20 million to any prospective bidder or bidders making a “bona fide” offer or offers to acquire one or more of the company’s subsidiaries which own music assets, and/or some of the fund’s music rights on favorable terms. The fee is meant to reduce the risk of making an offer for Hipgnosis Songs Fund’s music catalogs by providing “significant protection” against their due diligence and acquisition costs.

In a statement, Robert Naylor, chairman of Hipgnosis Songs Fund, thanked shareholders “for their continuing support” and said the company’s board “remains focused” on its strategic review, “under which it is looking at all options to deliver shareholder value.”

The London-listed fund, which owns full or partial rights to the song catalogs of artists ranging from Justin Bieber, Neil Young, Bruno Mars, Jimmy Iovine, 50 Cent, Shakira, Blondie, Justin Timberlake, Lindsey Buckingham and many more, hopes that the enticement of a large fee will help draw potential bidders.

In October, shareholders voted against the music royalties fund’s proposed $440 million deal to sell 29 catalogues to Hipgnosis Songs Capital – a partnership between investment giant Blackstone and the fund’s investment adviser Hipgnosis Song Management – citing the lack of an “up-to-date” valuation.

October’s annual meeting of shareholders also saw a majority of investors vote against a resolution “to continue running the fund in its current form” — a so-called “continuation vote” — commencing a six-month countdown for the board to come up with a plan “for the reconstruction, reorganisation, or winding-up of the company.”

That led to the installation of a new executive board with Naylor replacing Andrew Sutch as chairman in November.

Last year wrapped with Hipgnosis lowering the value of its music portfolio following what Naylor described to investors as a strained relationship with its investment advisor, the Merck Mercuriadis-led Hipgnosis Song Management (HSM), over the catalog’s worth.

This year has so far begun on an equally rocky footing with the fund’s board of directors calling into question HSM’s ability to field competitive bids for its assets.

A major sticking point is the investment advisor’s call option, which gives it the right to purchase the company’s portfolio if its contract with the fund is terminated with less than 12 months’ notice, among other scenarios. The fund’s board contends that Hipgnosis Song Management’s call option harms its ability to receive competitive bids.

Last week, Mercuriadis announced that he will be stepping down as chief executive officer of Hipgnosis Song Management to take up a newly created chairman role with Ben Katovsky replacing him as CEO.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund’s share price was roughly flat at 65 British pence ($0.84) following Wednesday’s extraordinary general meeting.

Ariana Grande Reveals 3 More Song Titles From ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Tracklist & Alternate Cover

Though her new album is still a month away, Ariana Grande is giving fans a small pocketful of sunshine in advance.

The 30-year-old pop star shared the titles of three new songs on Eternal Sunshine Wednesday (Feb. 7) via Instagram Reels. After previously announcing that the first song on the tracklist is called “Intro (End of the World)” and the fifth is the album’s title track, she’s now added the following to the fray: Track 2, simply titled “Bye”; Track 6, “Supernatural”; and Track 10, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).”

Grande also shared the sixth of her seven planned Eternal Sunshine covers, this one being a grid of 12 red-tinted photos of the star. “here to deliver some Eternal Sunshine tracklist tea and album cover six of seven,” she captioned the post. “we wanted to give you a few different options that capture the emotional ups and downs of this album.”

The “Positions” singer also confirmed that each Eternal Sunshine vinyl will include one of two different lyric booklets plus a selection of exclusive photos. Her seventh LP arrives March 8, marking her first proper release since 2020’s Positions.

And while it seems Grande plans to continue unveiling new song titles leading up to Eternal Sunshine‘s release, she won’t be releasing any of them until the album itself is out. “As hard as it is to resist the urge to share another song or single with you all asap, I would really love for you to experience the album in full this time,” she announced on Instagram Stories on Monday (Feb. 5).

“There will of course be more singles off of this project once it is out (and we may have a little surprise or two up our sleeves to hold you over until then so don’t you worry) but waiting a little longer for you to be able to listen fully through first really is my ideal way for you all experience this body of work,” she added at the time.

Fans did already get a taste of the 13-track project in January, when Grande dropped lead single “Yes, And?” The house-inspired dance tune debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the Victorious alum’s eighth time reigning atop the chart.

Tracy Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’ Leads LyricFind Charts After 2024 Grammys Performance

Multiple songs performed at the 2024 Grammy Awards reach Billboard’s LyricFind U.S. and Global charts dated Feb. 10, paced by Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” which reaches No. 1 on both rankings.

The LyricFind Global and LyricFind U.S. charts rank the fastest momentum-gaining tracks in lyric-search queries and usages globally and in the U.S., respectively, provided by LyricFind. The Global chart includes queries from all countries, including the U.S. The company is the world’s leader in licensed lyrics, with data provided by more than 5,000 publishers and utilized by more than 100 services, including Amazon, Pandora, Deezer, Microsoft, SoundHound and iHeartRadio.

“Fast Car” was performed on the Grammys telecast Feb. 4 as a duet between Chapman and Luke Combs; the latter covered the song in 2023. It was the first time the pair had performed the song together.

According to LyricFind, “Fast Car” earned a 6,171% increase in lyric searches and usages in the U.S. following the ceremony, plus a similarly sizable 6,084% bump globally.

More gains on the Billboard charts are in “Fast Car”’s future – both Chapman’s original and Combs’ rendition. The Billboard charts dated Feb. 17 will cover streaming, sales and airplay activity for Feb. 2-8.

Behind “Fast Car” comes Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now,” which appears on the LyricFind U.S. survey at No. 2. Like Chapman, who rarely performs publicly, Mitchell was a unique addition to the Grammys broadcast; she had never performed during the ceremony before 2024, and has performed sparingly in recent years due to health issues.

The performance of “Both Sides Now” found Mitchell joined by a bevy of musicians on backing vocals and instrumentation, including Brandi Carlile, Lucius, Allison Russell and more.

“Both Sides Now” scored a boost of 3,465% in lyric searches and usages in the U.S., according to LyricFind. The song also appears on the Global ranking at No. 3.

A third song performed during the ceremony, Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?,” rises 25-20 on the Global chart via a 153% increase. The tune from the Barbie soundtrack was also a big winner at the Grammys, scoring the nod for song of the year (plus best song written for visual media during the pre-telecast).

Other Grammy-related appearances on the latest LyricFind rankings include Paramore’s “This Is Why” at No. 8 on U.S. (and No. 18 on Global) and Dua Lipa’s “Houdini” at No. 9 on Global. “This Is Why” won the award for best alternative music performance, while Lipa performed “Houdini” during the broadcast.
