Two women who have been previously involved with Jonathan Majors have now come forward publicly with allegations of abuse by the movie star.

A new report from the New York Times released on Thursday (Feb. 8) has revealed that two former girlfriends of actor Jonathan Majors have come forward to publicly accuse him of abuse. Emma Duncan, who was engaged to Majors from 2015 to 2019, and Maura Hooper who dated Majors from 2013 to 2015 are the women who made their claims to the press. The allegations come two months after the former Marvel actor was convicted in New York on charges of reckless assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari stemming from an incident last March.

The women initially gave accounts of their experiences with him in interviews and statements delivered to the court before Majors’ trial under the Molineux rule which allowed the court to determine if the prosecution could submit evidence to show a past pattern of behavior. Duncan stated that Majors was emotionally abusive during their relationship, and had also choked and bruised her at several points in addition to making disturbing threats against her. Priya Chaudhry, Majors’ defense attorney, said in a statement that Majors denied those acts but also said he was “choosing to take responsibility for his own part in that toxic relationship, focusing on himself, and addressing his lifelong depression.”

Hooper’s statement also contained allegations of emotional abuse directed towards her by Majors while they were students at the Yale School of Drama, including one instance where he told her he’d “rip you out of my heart the way they ripped our baby out of you” about an abortion she had months into their relationship. Chaudhry’s statement says that Majors remembers the “mutually intense conversations” but “regrets saying hurtful things.” Ultimately, the court didn’t allow the statements to be entered into evidence.

In separate statements to the New York Times, two women who worked on the set of HBO’s Lovecraft Country with Majors in 2019 delivered statements of their confrontational experiences with Majors which made for a “hostile work environment.” Multiple women crew members had complained to higher-ups at the network about his behavior, forcing HBO to compel him to deliver an apology to the women, which he reportedly did so gruffly, saying it was “a misunderstanding.” Chaudhry said that Majors had “never been told that anyone objected to his behavior.”

The Ultimate Playlist to Forget El Toxico: Shakira, Ivy Queen, Grupo Firme & More

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and if celebrating the romantic holiday is not your thing —especially if you just got out of a relationship — then it’s time to turn to music.

Ahead of Galentine’s Day (held traditionally on Feb. 13), Billboard compiled the ultimate Latin playlist to forget “el toxico” or “la toxica” (aka your toxic ex) because let’s face it — music heals the soul. More than 50 songs form part of our empowering and unapologetic playlist that includes all-time classics such as Paquita La Del Barrio’s “Rata de Dos Patas,” Selena Quintanilla’s “Que Creias” and Cafe Tacvba’s “La Ingrata,” as well as reggaeton anthems such as Nio Garcia & Casper’s “Te Boté,” Bad Bunny and Sech’s “Vete,” and Ivy Queen’s “La Vida es Asi,” to name a few.

But it doesn’t stop there. Kicking el toxico or la toxica to the curb comes in every genre.

Grupo Firme, for example, can make you sing at the top of your lungs with their Billboard Hot 100 hit “Ya Superame.” Another música Mexicana classic is Alicia Villareal’s “Te Quedo Grande la Yegua” “Hector Acosta’s “Me Voy” is the ultimate divorce bachata track, and El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico sings all about being freed from a bad relationship in their salsa tune “Me Libere.”

Some recent anthems? Becky G and Karol G’s first-ever collab “Mamiii” and Shakira’s “BZRP Music Session, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap, both are part of the mix.

Listen to this year’s Galentine’s playlist below to celebrate new beginnings.

Sony Music Buys Stake in Michael Jackson Catalog, Valuing Rights at Over $1.2B

In what could be the largest valuation ever of a musician’s music assets, Sony Music Group has closed an agreement to buy half of Michael Jackson‘s publishing and recorded masters catalog in a deal that sources say valued those music assets somewhere above $1.2 billion. Other sources have suggested it might be as much as $1.5 billion. At those valuations, Sony will pay at least $600 million for its stake of the legendary rights.

That means that the Jackson deal, which closed late last year, is at a bigger valuation than the $1.2 billion that Queen is currently seeking. And whereas the Queen valuation includes, sources say, royalties from income streams beyond the masters and publishing, including from the Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, and theatrical productions using Queen’s music, Sony’s deal with the Michael Jackson estate does not include royalties from the Broadway play and other theatrical productions featuring Jackson’s music.

It may not, however, just be Jackson’s music that’s involved in the deal. Sources say the current deal includes non-Jackson-authored songs in his Mijac publishing catalog, which also includes the approximately 250-song Sly & the Family Stone publishing catalog as well as iconic songs written and/or performed by Jerry Lee Lewis, Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge and Dion.

Last February, following a story first reported by Variety that the Jackson deal was being negotiated, Billboard estimated that the iconic artist’s estate earns about $75 million annually. Those assets include ownership of master recordings, publishing for Jackson’s share of his songs, his Mijac publishing catalog and revenue from merchandise and royalties from theatrical shows featuring Jackson’s music. At the time, Billboard estimated that within the $75 million estimate, Jackson’s recording and publishing assets alone brought in $47.2 million to the estate; and that Mijac might be bringing in another $5 million to $8 million annually.

The Jackson estimate, however, did not take into account that his popularity appears to be growing as the streaming marketplace expands.

Sales and streams of Jackson’s music grew steadily from 1.07 million album equivalent units in 2020 to 1.47 million in 2023 — up 37% over those three years — according to Luminate. That outpaced the overall U.S. music market for album consumption units, which grew 22.9% during that time period. Outside the United States, Jackson is arguably even more popular. In 2023, consumption of his music grew 38.3% to 6.5 billion on-demand streams, up from 4.7 billion streams in 2021.

Next year, a Jackson biopic called Michael will be released, likely fueling even more growth to his fanbase, boosting consumption and triggering more revenue to flow to his estate and any other rights holder.

With all of the economic returns the estate is delivering, the masterminds behind it — lawyer John Branca and A&R executive John McClain — are expected to continue to stay involved as co-executors.

Sources indicate that the Sony deal also leaves in place Primary Wave’s stake, which is believed to be about 10% of Jackson’s publishing assets.

Throughout the years, Sony has paid the Jackson estate more than $2 billion in some major deals that go beyond distributing royalties for his records and songs. In 1991, the company paid $100 million to buy the first half of what became Sony/ATV; ATV Music was the catalog that Jackson bought in 1985 that contained the Beatles catalog and other popular songs. That was merged into Sony’s music publishing operation to become Sony/ATV, with Sony and Jackson each owning 50% of that company. In 2016, the company paid $750 million for the remaining 50% of Sony/ATV. It also paid $287.5 million for the Jackson estate’s share of the consortium that owned EMI Music Publishing in 2018, as well as dividends during its ownership of those assets that came out to a total of about $1.6 billion. And now, the latest deal adds another $600 million or more, driving the total amount past the $2 billion mark.

Sony has been active with acquisitions over the past year. Last year, it also acquired what has been described as a significant minority stake in the Latin label and management company Rimas Entertainment, which launched Bad Bunny‘s career. While it’s unclear what percentage Sony bought, the overall deal for the label and management was expected to have about a $300 million valuation, sources said at the time.

In May 2023, Sony also acquired the RECORDS catalog from Barry Weiss, Ron Perry and Matt Pincus, buying out the latter duo in a deal that was seeking a $100 million valuation; and then did a going forward 50/50 deal with Weiss, who retained control of the label’s recent catalog.

Reps for Sony, the Jackson estate and Primary Wave declined to comment.

It’s New Music Friday, Super Bowl weekend edition, and fans are getting a slew of new songs to enjoy as game day approaches, including a whole new album from the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner Usher.

The R&B star shared his ninth studio record Coming Home Friday (Feb. 9), just two days before he’s set to take the stage at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium between the second and third quarters of the Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers showdown. The 20-track effort features a star-studded list of collaborators, including Burna Boy, Summer Walker and 21 Savage, H.E.R. and BTS’ Jung Kook.

Both Noah Kahan and Kacey Musgraves are spinning new tunes this week, too. While the former artist’s “Forever” celebrates the closing out of his breakthrough Stick Season era, the latter star’s “Deeper Well” signifies the start of something new. On the same day she released the single, Musgraves announced that her album of the same name will arrive March 15.

Maggie Rogers is also back and better than ever with her first solo release since her sophomore album Surrender. One year after teaming up with Zach Bryan for their hit “Dawns,” the 29-year-old singer-songwriter has returned with her new single “Don’t Forget Me.”

Plus, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have released their latest husband-and-wife duet. “Purple Irises” follows the couple’s previous collaborations on 2019’s “Nobody But You,” 2021’s “Happy Anywhere,” 2023’s “Love Is Alive” and more.

Maluma, Octavio Cuadras & Marca Registrada, “BLING BLING” (Sony Music Latin)

Colombian hitmaker Maluma is back with another regional Mexican banger. It’s a formula that’s worked for the reggaetón artist who has enjoyed success collaborating with the likes of Grupo Firme (“Cada Quien”) and Carin Leon (“Según Quién”). The former landed at No. 1 on both the Billboard Latin Airplay and Regional Mexican Airplay charts, with Maluma becoming the first urban artist to lead both rankings simultaneously since their inception in 1994. Now, he’s teamed up with Grupo Marca Registrada and Octavio Cuadras for the bright “BLING BLING,” which has a big-band vibe but falls under the new subgenre corridos felices — pioneered by Cuadras. Powered by a joyous trombone beat, the artists sing about a care-free lifestyle. “Bling Bling” is the first track off DON JUAN Season 2, a new season of releases by Maluma, according to a press release. — GRISELDA FLORES

Camilo, Un (Sony Music Latin)

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo gifts his Tribu (as he calls his fans) three new romantic songs. The EP, Un, highlights the elegance of live instruments such as a saxophone, trumpets, trombones, conga and güira with charming musical arrangements. All three tracks are appropriate for different relationship statuses — among them “Gordo,” a salsa song about seeing an old love with their new partner and “No Se Vale” a bachata for “dancing tightly” (as the singer-songwriter expressed on his social media). He also joins his wife Evaluna in “PLIS” to celebrate their love to the rhythm of salsa, the couple’s first collaboration since 2022 “Índigo.”

Un was recorded live with audio and video together, according to a post Camilo shared on social media: “17 musicians got together to play at El Taller Creativo. When we counted ‘one, two, three, four’ we all did one thing. That ‘un’ (‘one’) that broke the silence aligned all the hearts that were there, recording music and video simultaneously, in the same take.” — LUISA CALLE

Angélica Garcia, “Juanita” (Partisan Records)

Pop auteur Angélica Garcia offers a flavorful taste of her upcoming first album, mostly in Spanish, with “Juanita,” a cumbia-inspired avant-pop song about a limitless woman. “Juanita, Juanita, Juani/ Why are you calling me?/ What is the force that motivates? / You made me wake up/ Your voice, the sound of stars/ Not even the gods can draw you,” the L.A.-born artist sings with an enveloping mystique over an evocative bass line.

According to a press release, the track’s roots date back to 2020, as Garcia was sitting before an altar that she constructed in her bedroom, looking into the past to inform the present with familial knowledge. “Many cumbias have lyrics about pain and longing … My intention was for the tension and confusion in the song to feel like remembering a past life. I wanted to capture what the shadow side of grief does to us,” she explains. The music video for the song, shot in black and white and directed by Puerto Rican award-winning documentary filmmaker Sonia Malfa, is as mysterious as it is captivating. — SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS

Los Ángeles Azules, Alejandro Fernández, “La Cumbia Triste” (Seitrack/UMG Recordings)

In a first collaborative effort, Los Ángeles Azules and Alejandro Fernández unleash “La Cumbia Triste.” Penned by Aureo Baqueiro and Leonel García, the track finds the Mexican ranchera superstar using his powerful vocals to dedicate a few words to the hopeless romantic. “For those who do not sleep/ Because their soul hurts/ For those who do not dream/ Since that past love that stole their peace […] This is the sad cumbia/ The one that hugs you/ The one who understands what’s happening/ This sad cumbia is for you,” he sings. Though the lyrics are melancholic, the rhythm is opposite of a “sad cumbia;” in fact, the Rodolfo Lugo and Jorge Mejía Avante-produced track is a captivating cumbia that can get anyone on their feet –whether they can relate to the lyrics or not. — JESSICA ROIZ

Caloncho, “Ánimo” (Universal Music México)

Caloncho’s music perfectly blends his lyrics and melodies, which always bring a sense of peace. This time, the Sonora-born singer-songwriter presents “Ánimo,” which translates to “cheer up” — a reminder to keep moving forward. The new song begins with a delightful drum rhythm that, along with the bass and electronic elements, supports a refreshing, spontaneous and sophisticated sound with a wave of smooth chords and a reflection between its verses. “I keep learning from my mistakes/ It hasn’t been easy/ Not everything is flowers/ If colors are missing on the road/ I’m sure better times will come,” he sings in the chorus. — INGRID FAJARDO

Mexican Institute of Sound, Algo-Ritmo: Mexican Institute of Sound Hits 2004-2024 (Soy Sauce)

Mexican Institute of Sound, the brainchild of Camilo Lara, commemorates two decades of exploratory Latin productions with Algo-Ritmo: Mexican Institute of Sound Hits 2004-2024, a compilation that encapsulates Lara’s illustrious career. This collection features 24 songs, including fresh collaborations with Ceci Bastida (the psychedelic cumbión of “Stop!”), Esteman and Foudeqush (the haunting ballad of “Bolero”), with a retrospective and vibrant narrative woven from the threads of Mexican cultural heritage, electronic beats and global rhythms.

M.I.S., a maestro of musical fusion, has consistently blurred the lines between genres, melding funk, cumbia and electronic music. From his early experiments with Méjico Máxico to the collaborative richness of Distrito Federal, his work stands as a testament to his pioneering spirit and his commitment to social justice, through the universal language of music. Algo + Ritmo 2004-2024 is an invitation to celebrate the past, present and future of a project that continues to define and transcend the boundaries of the varied Mexican sound. — ISABELA RAYGOZA

And also, these were the best new dance tracks of the week.

Anyma, “Pictures Of You”

Matteo Milleri, who is one half of Tale of Us and also makes music as Anyma, today drops “Pictures Of You,” a three-minute slice of music that very much falls in the dark, machinistic but also somehow very emotive realm that Tale Of Us has carved out and which Anyma’s work expands upon. The track is out via Tale Of Us’ Afterlife Records and comes ahead of Anyma plays at Ultra Music Festival in Miami next month and at Coachella in April.

Shygirl, Club Shy

Cool, pulsing, sophisticated and often ecstatic, Shygirl’s new Club Shy EP is of course literally music for the club, but the title also has a figurative quality, with the English artist packing this metaphorical venue with collaborators including Boys Noize (who delivers on the previously released “tell me”), along with Empress Of, SG Lewis, Kingdom, Cosha and Lola Zouaï. Each artists brings their own respective flavor, but the six-track project is ultimately lead by Shygirl’s strobe-lit vision. The project is out via Because Music.

Above & Beyond feat. Zoe Johnson, “Crazy Love”

Two years after debuting the song in front of 20,000 fans at a show in Los Angeles, Above & Beyond’s “Crazy Love” gets an official release via Anjunabeats. The song is everything there is to love about Above & Beyond compressed into four minutes, with the trio building the same type of soaring trance production that have made them favorites for nearly 25 years years and infusing it with the same depth of a emotion that’s allowed the the guys to officially title their their radio show and live sets “group therapy.” The not-so-secret weapon on “Crazy Love” is Zoë Johnston, a longtime collaborator who’s voice brings the song to another level of tearjerk impact.

Louis the Child feat. Memba, “I’m Not Giving Up”

The gentlemen of Louis The Child dip their toes into the pop punk revival with emo-evoking vocals that juxtapose against a thick synth build and breakdown that, the pair say, “feels very signature to us, it’s big and hits you like a ton of bricks.” A collab with New York City-based duo Memba — who LTC calls “some of the most talented producers we’ve ever worked with” — “I’m Not Giving Up” is out on Interscope Records.

DJ Minx, “Taking It Back”

Detroit icon DJ Minx returns to Diplo’s Higher Ground label with “Taking It Back,” a sonic and lyrical crash course on the back in the day dance underground. With deadpan delivery, Minx declares that “we’re taking it back to the old school” before going on about “techno and house under one roof, underground raves, ground rules, acid house, bold moves, no cell phones, we were just cool” over a tough, stuttering synth line. Minx will play Detroit’s Movement festival in May and other summer stops in Portugal and the U.K.
