How This Boutique Music & Sound Design Company Scored a Touchdown With 7 Super Bowl Spots

Few events can stitch together the various webs of American culture like the Super Bowl, and the numbers this year bear that out: With 123.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, the Big Game last Sunday (Feb. 11) was the most-watched broadcast since the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. And that means a lot of eyeballs for a lot of high-profile advertisement slots, which were priced accordingly: Commercials for the event this year went for as much as $7 million for a 30-second ad, according to the Wall Street Journal.

That makes working on such ads a high-stakes game, not to mention one that’s highly coveted in the world of music supervision and production. This year, boutique music and sound design company Barking Owl Sound landed seven such spots, doing sound design, mixing and production for ads with Booking.com (with Tina Fey) and Etsy; music arrangement and production for Budweiser’s spot; sound design, mix, production and original music for Starry’s ad with Ice Spice (No. 10 on Billboard‘s list of best commercials from the event); mixing and production for Paramount+’s Champions League ad; sound design and production for Kia’s commercial; and original music and production for Homes.com’s Mascot ad. And that high-profile work for the firm earns Barking Owl Sound co-founder/executive creative director Kelly Bayett the title of Billboard’s Executive of the Week.

Here, Bayett discusses the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the sound production of a Super Bowl ad; how she helped build Barking Owl and its creative team as well as its new music library, along with the opportunities it entails for them; and what’s next for the company. “With seven spots this year, it really solidifies our position in the industry moving forward and opens us up to new opportunities,” Bayett says. “We can accept the challenge and our team can excel with a number of projects under the highest amount of pressure. Moving forward, we are strong as ever and ready for anything.”

This week, Barking Owl worked on the music for seven Super Bowl advertisements, including for Etsy, Budweiser, Kia and more. What key decisions did you make to help make that happen?

In our industry, getting Super Bowl ads is definitely relationship-dependent. An agency and client will rarely go to a vendor they don’t know and trust for a piece with millions of dollars on the line. Our key decisions are actually based on building the long term and not what feels fast and easy. [It’s about] focusing on growing relationships that last and consistently keeping the work you are doing fresh and interesting.

Can you tell me about how the company got started and your philosophy around what you do and what work you choose to get involved with, particularly as it pertains to these spots?

I was a single mom and I and my then-boyfriend, now husband, decided to start a music and sound design company in our home. Fourteen years later, we have added mix, brand partnerships, gorgeous studios in L.A. and New York as well as a global team of composers and writers. Our philosophy was to create a company that focused on creative and felt like home. We care about the craft of sound. If you look at any piece of work we have done for the Super Bowl, or anything on our reel, you will see that we don’t just grab sounds out of the library. We create them for each moment and we have been really fortunate to attract clients who value and appreciate the process.

What is the typical process for how you guys work on a commercial like these?

We will get a brief from the agency, and from there, it’s go time. We get on a call and talk about the process, creative directives, and then we start to create and build. It’s important to us to have the agency involved in the collaboration so that there are no surprises on either side. We keep it fun and light, we have amazing executive producers in New York and L.A. in Ashley Benton and KC Dossett who keep everyone on task. It’s the only time of year where every job is racing to the same finish line, so it takes incredible scheduling and organization.

Your work on these was a mix of sound design, mixing, production, arrangement and original music. How do you approach each of those roles differently?

We have different teams of specialists for each role. Original music can be the trickiest a lot of the time because we are creating themes, tones and movement with an incredibly fast timeline. You are working with personal taste, and when it comes to thoughts about music, there is no right or wrong, it’s all about feeling. Sometimes, you just don’t like something because it doesn’t move you, and that can be challenging. We have to become detectives and figure out what isn’t hitting emotionally or tonally. Sometimes the whole team is on board with the exception of one holdout, and even though majority rules, I feel like we have failed if everyone has not left happy.

Arrangements are really about timing and vision of the track. Sound design is one of the most fun pieces, and also the piece that if we do it exactly right with hours of foley recording and sound manipulation, it will feel like we have done nothing at all. Mixing is the glue that keeps all of it together, giving space for the dialogue, VO, music and sound design. A great mix is dynamic, a bad mix is overly compressed and you lose the craft of each element you have so diligently created. Having our work destroyed by lazy mixers inspired the creation of our mix department.

Music production work like this is a competitive space, dealing with both huge companies and smaller houses. How do you guys compete within that environment, and stand out against your competitors?

It’s an incredibly competitive environment and it only gets more competitive as new companies are popping up each day. I have never really been one to look around and see what others are doing. I am solely focused on our mission, our purpose and what work we are putting out there. How are we showing up each day? Is it good enough? We are also a female-founded company with female creative leads, which is highly unusual. I came up in a space that was so insanely male, we wanted to bring a different perspective and change the landscape with female composers, mixers and sound designers. Everyone matters and everyone is supported here. When people feel supported they are free to create better and more inventive work. We created a structure where we all work as a team and there is no internal competition. That is a huge difference as well. Our employee retention is incredibly high and we all know each other so well, it’s truly like family.

You’re also building out your own music library. What will that allow you to do, and how can that allow you to grow in the future?

I am so insanely excited about this. We have this amazing library of about 15,000 original tracks from years of demos created for commercials that never sold. The quality we expect from composers and the years of crafting and scoring have resulted in an incredibly varied, diverse library of tracks that are of the highest creative level. We didn’t exactly know what to do with them or how to set up a library, but we knew that we could offer something unique to the industry, as well as broadening our reach to TV and film. Last year, we brought in a partner, Kirkland Lynch, who leads these types of strategic initiatives as CEO. Kirkland brings experience from years with Sony Music, Universal Music Group, Stevie Wonder and YouTube Music. He has been a great addition to the team bringing an understanding and knowledge we really needed.

What does success look like from your point of view for a commercial like these? And with seven spots at this year’s game, what does that allow you guys to do moving forward?

We aren’t in charge of the overall idea, so the success for us is to see if we have executed the idea in the best way possible. Sound design properly in the space, the music scored and arranged in a way that tells the story and makes you feel something, mixes where each sound element complements the other — that is success. With seven spots this year, it really solidifies our position in the industry moving forward and opens us up to new opportunities. We can accept the challenge and our team can excel with a number of projects under the highest amount of pressure. Moving forward, we are strong as ever and ready for anything.

Trending on Billboard

Subtronics, TESSERACT

The bass scene continues its headbanging, rail-riding forward momentum with the release of TESSERACT, the sophomore album from Philadelphia’s Subtronics. The 16-track LP, out via the artists’ own Cyclops Recordings, is loaded with genre regulars — Excision, Grabbitz, HOL! (of “COUNTRY RIDDIM” fame) and REZZ among them — with this latter artist joining the producer born Jesse Kardon for the dark, squelchy, spatial “Black Ice.” Altogether the album has more subdued and sometimes groovy moments, some grime influence other tracks that hit like a two-by-four to the face, demonstrating Kardon’s heavy, heady, frequently psychedelic range.

“Some songs are meant for the dancefloor, some are meant for the car, and some are meant to serenade you to sleep,” he says. “I am trying as best I can to create a fascinating alternative reality with magic and a sci-fi world of energy and feeling.” Subtronics — the only electronic artist to hit Pollstar’s 2023 Top 100 North American Tours chart, at No. 75 — launches his 16-date North American tour tonight in Minneapolis, with two shows at Red Rocks also on the calendar for May.

John Summit & Hayla, “Shiver”

The winning formula this pair forged on their hit “Where You Are” — which showed up on President Obama’s favorite songs of 2023 list — extends to “Shiver,” which features Hayla’s increasingly iconic voice over a cinematic, climax-laden progressive house production from Summit. “Last year, Hayla and I had one of the biggest dance records of the year with ‘Where You Are,”’ he says, “so we knew we had to follow it up, and it was much easier said than done. It took about nine months start to finish to get this record done, but damn it was worth it. This might be my favorite record to date — definitely the most emotion I put behind a song.”

The track is out on Summit’s Experts Only label and comes ahead of his performances at Coachella 2024, where he’ll play solo and with Dom Dolla as Under Construction, along with his sold out Madison Square Garden show in July. Both Summit and Hayla have debut albums coming later this year.

Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man, “Lovers In A Past Life”

Calvin Harris and U.K. singer-songwriter Rag n Bone Man, who scored a hit together with 2019’s “Giant” — re-link for “Lovers In a Past Life.” Recorded at the end of 2023, the song finds Harris meshing a slinky guitar, kickdrum and waves of synth with the husky voice of Rag n Bone Man, who keeps the Valentine’s Day mood alive with lyrics about “slow dancing in the midnight glow.” The track follows announcements that Harris will be a 2024 resident at LIV Las Vegas and LIV Beach inside the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, and will return to Ushauïa in Ibiza for a Friday night residency this season.

Nia Archives, “Silence Is Loud”

U.K. junglist Nia Archives extends a hot streak with “Silence Is Loud,” the title track from her debut album coming this April 12. Weaving classic jungle with rave, indie and Brit-pop, the song is a propulsive and high-impact two-and-a-half minute ode to the producer’s love for her brother, without whom, the lyrics go, “the silence is loud.” The album, out via HIJINXX/Island Records and made with David Byrne and FKA Twigs collaborator Ethan P. Flynn, is meant to function as a complete work rather than a collection of tracks — with Archives pushing the genre forward by, she says, “putting interesting sounds on jungle.”

Francis Mercier & Emmanuel Jal “Hustla”

February isn’t famous for its weather, but Haitian DJ Francis Mercier transports us to the warm beaches of our mind with his latest, “Hustla.” Out on Higher Ground, the Afro-house track has an impeccably laidback vibe, with Mercier creating a steamy, breezy groove and South Sudanese-Canadian singer Emmanuel Jal adding vocals that match the production as speaks of “the heat of Port-au-Prince, to the streets of New York, rocking in the souk of Marrakesh, headed to the hills of Nairobi, on the way to the beaches of Rio.” Even if your weekend plans don’t involve much more than hanging around the house, let this one take you away.

Four Tet, “Daydream Repeat”

It’s a big week for Four Tet, who announced his very own festival — the aptly titled Four Tet & Friends — happening this May 4-5 in Brooklyn. The event will feature producers including Ben UFO, Chloé Robinson, Daphni b2b Floating Points, Salute, Avalon Emerson and multiple sets from Four Tet himself. This news comes in tandem with the producer’s latest, “Daydream Repeat,” which takes the chime sound so essential to the Four Tet oeuvre and places it amongst a propulsive, but also delicate (and even occasionally slightly gritty) six-minute production. The song is the latest single from Four Tet’s twelfth studio album Three, coming March 15.

Gunna Reflects on the Price of Fame in Frosty ‘Bittersweet’ Video: Watch

Gunna kicked off the year on a pensive note, looking inward with his first single of 2024 titled “Bittersweet.”

After teasing the icy record, which many thought to initially be a freestyle on social media earlier this week, the YSL rapper dropped his first single of the year to streaming services on Friday (Feb. 16).

Gunna doesn’t mince words coming out of the gate, as he possibly addresses his fallout with Lil Baby as his Drip Harder partner has repeatedly criticized Gunna for taking a plea deal in the YSL RICO case in 2022.

Gunna is gearing up to drop his A Gift & A Curse follow-up album later this year, and he’s teasing more “substance” on his records and is expected to tap into some Afrobeat sonics.

The 50th anniversary reissues are combined with the original album for sales tracking and charting purposes.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Top Rock & Alternative Albums ranks the week’s most popular rock and alternative albums by equivalent album units. Vinyl Album tallies the week’s top-selling vinyl releases. Tastemaker Albums measures the top-selling titles at independent and small chain record stores.

Band on the Run sold 8,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Feb. 8 (up 14,681%) according to Luminate.

Elsewhere on Top Album Sales, Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) returns to No. 1 for a seventh nonconsecutive week, climbing two spots with 12,000 copies sold (up 18%). Swift has a clean sweep of the top three, as former No. 1 Midnights bolts 8-2 (11,000; up 91%) following its double win at the Grammy Awards (Feb. 4) for album of the year and best pop vocal album, plus Swift’s chart-topping Lover rises 4-3 with nearly 11,000 sold (up 51%).

Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits re-enters at No. 4 on Top Album Sales with nearly 11,000 sold (up 3,251%) following his death on Feb. 5 of stomach cancer.

Phish’s Round Room, originally released in 2002, re-enters at No. 6 with 6,000 sold (up 2,789%) following its release on vinyl on Feb. 2.

Stray Kids’ chart-topping ROCK-STAR is steady at No. 7 with 6,000 (down 1%).

The soundtrack to The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes debuts at No. 8 with 6,000 sold following its release on CD and vinyl on Feb. 2. The album was initially released via digital download and streaming services on Nov. 17, 2023.

Rounding out the top 10 is Green Day’s former leader Saviors, slipping 5-9 with nearly 6,000 (down 20%) and Swift’s chart-topping Folklore, rising 15-10 with almost 6,000 (up 48%).

In the week ending Feb. 8, there were 1.168 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 4.5% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 829,000 (up 0.2%) and digital albums comprised 339,000 (up 16.6%).

There were 391,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Feb. 8 (down 3.2% week-over-week) and 433,000 vinyl albums sold (up 3.6%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 2.499 million (down 31.7% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 2.847 million (down 46.3%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 7.082 million (down 35.8% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 5.373 million (down 40.4%) and digital album sales total 1.709 million (down 15.8%).

Here Are All of Billy Joel’s Adult Contemporary Top 10s, From ‘Piano Man’ to ‘Turn the Lights Back On’

Billy Joel is back in the top 10 of Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart (dated Feb. 24) as “Turn the Lights Back On” – his first single release in 17 years – rises to No. 10.

Joel achieves his 24th Adult Contemporary top 10 and first since his version of Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love” hit No. 9 in August 1997.

Notably, Joel logs his latest Adult Contemporary top 10 a week shy of the 50th anniversary of his first appearance on the chart: On the list dated March 2, 1974, he debuted at No. 48 with his breakthrough classic “Piano Man,” which went on to become his first top 10, peaking at No. 4 that April.

Among Joel’s 24 Adult Contemporary top 10s, he has sent eight songs to No. 1, from “Just the Way You Are” in 1978 to “The River of Dreams” in 1993.

Following its release at 7 a.m. ET Feb. 1 on Columbia Records, “Turn the Lights Back On” debuted at No. 11 on the Adult Contemporary chart (dated Feb. 10) and held at the rank in its second week on the survey. As previously reported, the piano ballad, which Joel performed on the Grammy Awards Feb. 4, returned him to the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Feb. 17) for the first time as a recording artist since 1997.

The song’s official video arrived Feb. 16.

“Turn the Lights Back On” was written by Joel, Arthur Bacon, Wayne Hector and Freddy Wexler.

“I started the song with Arthur and Wayne,” Wexler told Billboard. “Billy and I met some time later in Sag Harbor, NY. We became close friends, and we started quietly working on his unfinished material from over the years. This period was about a year and a half during which Billy, unbeknownst to nearly anyone, started to dip his toe into writing again. I travelled with him to many of his shows and, eventually, I showed him ‘Turn the Lights Back On.’ He helped me finish it at a studio and, as I suspect he does with anything, he made it much better.”

The Kid Mero, one-half of the former comedy and talk show duo Desus & Mero, has broken the silence around the pair’s split on his new podcast program. However, Desus is pushing back on Mero’s version of the split, calling cap on the whole breakdown.

Today, Mero is a co-host of 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony & The Kid Mero, with the pair taking on conversations in the pop culture space. Joe Budden, who knows a thing or two about professional public breakups, was a recent guest on the podcast and the topic of the Desus & Mero split came up.

“It’s the business, there’s no friends in the business, you know what I’m saying? We was in a situation where I got four kids, two mortgages. The taxes are crazy. I got real life situations going on,” Mero said, gesturing to Budden, and mentioning that he now lives in New Jersey.

He added, “So I’m like, ‘Yo, if we get an offer from DraftKings for 1.5, before they got logos on the NBA court, and you’re like, ‘Nah, bro this ain’t it.’ And I’m like, ‘Nah fam, I’m gambling illegally right now. This sh*t is legal in Jersey, I just moved here. This is going places, bro. We need to do this.’ And they’re like, ‘Nah?’ I’m like, ‘F*ck outta here!’ To me that’s like, the beginning of like, ‘Alright, this sh*t is corroding.’”

Desus, catching wind of the recaps made by various outlets, in this case, Complex, retweeted the article with a gif of the “cap” meme in response although he has elected so far to not say more beyond that.

At their height, Desus & Mero were an unstoppable force that crossed over into the hearts of America by way of their high-profile cable television program and appeared by all measures to become the next big thing in media and beyond.
