How Logic1000’s ‘Transformation During Motherhood’ Influenced New Album ‘Mother’

Samantha Poulter had her first child, a daughter named Genie, in October of 2022. In a way, the Australia-born, Berlin-based electronic music producer is about to again give birth. Due March 22 through Because Music, her debut album, Mother, is 11-tracks of cerebral, underground-leaning house music that contains elements of the many facets of femininity. The music is no doubt a product of Poulter’s transition into the album’s titular role.

“Since becoming a mother, I feel this overwhelming sense of womanhood and sisterhood,” she says. It makes sense then that her album is populated by female collaborators including Rochelle Jordan, whose velvet vocals are featured on the lush “Promises” and Miami-based singer MJ Nebreda, who brings an alluring heat to “Every lil.”

“If hearing the story about my transformation during motherhood inspires someone to look deep within themselves and think about how they want to grow and transform,” Poulter says of her vision for the project, “that will make this album successful to me.”

Foundation

Samantha Poulter took piano lessons as a child but “didn’t like that formal type of training,” she says. Yet she dreamed of being a performer, taking inspiration from Michael Jackson and 1990s-era British pop star Peter Andre. She had a keen ear from a young age, too: “I’d be like, ‘I would do this differently,’ and have ideas about how music should sound without the training to communicate that or create it myself.” That changed when she started producing electronic music in her early 20s, weaving high school-era influences like Destiny’s Child and Aaliyah into her cerebral productions.

Discovery

Poulter and her husband, DJ-producer Tom McAlister, started producing electronic music together in 2016 when she “felt there was a lull” in what she was listening to. She asked him if they could “have a go at making something together that reflects what I want to hear,” and in 2019, she released her self-titled debut EP as Logic1000. It included “DJ Logic Please Forgive Me,” which Four Tet played in his 2019 Coachella set, instantly raising her profile. “That was a huge moment for me,” she recalls, “and it snowballed from there.” She was soon enlisted to officially remix Flume, Christine and the Queens, Major Lazer and Caribou, leading to her own Coachella set in 2022. Come March 22, Logic1000 will release her debut album, Mother, which was supported by a recent Boiler Room set filmed in Melbourne, Australia.

Future

Now based in Berlin, Poulter gave birth to her daughter, Genie, in 2022. The experience of pregnancy and parenting deeply influenced the lush, intimate Mother. Poulter, who has always been candid about her mental health, found the early postpartum period challenging: “I was up and down and so hormonal, but also had this insane energy to achieve things and create this album,” she says. She ended up in a period of burnout, taking 10 months off touring, but feels prepared to dive back in. “Once I realized that this is actually my dream job, it gave me the drive, energy and courage to just do it,” she says, “but with that practical advice of it being on my own terms.”

John Janick Unveils Newly Restructured Interscope Capitol Labels Group

Interscope Geffen A&M chairman/CEO John Janick unveiled the newly restructured ‘West Coast’ label operation for the Universal Music Group today (March 7), under the banner Interscope Capitol Labels Group, with himself retaining the title atop the new configuration. As part of the announcement, longtime IGA vice chairman Steve Berman retains his title atop the new company, overseeing things for Interscope, Geffen, A&M, Capitol, Blue Note, Priority, Verve and Motown; and IGA CFO and longtime finance veteran Annie Lee takes on the title of chief operating officer at the new ICLG.

Under the new configuration, Capitol Music Group chief financial officer Geoff Harris will become the CFO of the new company, which is the result of the major overhaul of the Universal Music Group label structure that UMG chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge first announced on Feb. 1. Under the new structure, UMG’s West Coast labels now fall under Janick’s purview, under the banner of ICLG, while its East Coast labels — consisting mostly of Republic, Def Jam, Island and Mercury — will be overseen by Republic co-founder and CEO Monte Lipman. News of the new East Coast structure is also expected soon.

Trending on Billboard

More details of the ICLG configuration are still to come, but Capitol Music Group’s new executive structure has come into focus this past month, with former Geffen boss Tom March as chairman/CEO and UMPG veteran Lilia Parsa as president, following the departures of prior CMG chair/CEO Michelle Jubelirer and president Arjun Pulijal. The company has been going through extensive layoffs in the past week, as IGA and Capitol formally merge together.

In a press release, Janick said that, in addition to Berman’s continued role overseeing the labels and the ICLG brand, Lee will work with Harris to “integrat[e] finance, operations and culture” and make sure that “ICLG runs efficiently and sustains a positive experience for its artists and teams.”

“Steve and Annie are both highly accomplished executives who have been critical to our company’s growth and success for more than two decades,” Janick said in a statement. “They have worked closely with me in redesigning ICLG to benefit and enhance each individual label under our umbrella and foster an entrepreneurial spirit that will set the standard for what a modern music company should be. I congratulate Steve and Annie on their well-deserved promotions, and look forward to sharing enormous success with them in the coming years.”

Berman is an Interscope legend, having joined the company in 1991 just after its founding and risen through the marketing and sales ranks to president by 2005, then vice chairman of the expanded IGA in 2010 alongside label co-founder and CEO Jimmy Iovine. Berman retained the title after Janick took over in 2014, and now takes on additional oversight of the Capitol labels under ICGL.

“Every aspect of our redesign will enable us to provide optimal support for our artists and their creativity, while securing the best and most innovative opportunities that will help expand their global brands,” Berman said in a statement. “I’ve devoted nearly my entire career to this company and its artists, and I am excited to continue working with John, Annie and the entire ICLG team on this next phase of our journey.”

Lee joined Universal in a finance role in 2005, and moved to Interscope the following year, rising through the finance ranks at the company to become CFO in 2019. In her new role, she takes on operational responsibilities for the broader label group.

“I am looking forward to working with John, Berm and our entire team as we continue to build ICLG into a modern music company that is both a powerful partner to artists and their teams and a fulfilling and creative environment in which to work,” Lee said in a statement. “We are well positioned for the future and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

On Thursday (March 7), BET and the NAACP announced that New Edition will be inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. The iconic group from Roxbury, Massachusetts who expanded the reach of R&B, attaining superstardom in the process with hits like “Can You Stand The Rain”, will receive the honor at the upcoming 55th NAACP Image Awards. The award goes to individuals whose careers have made a generational impact on their profession. The event will be hosted by Grammy Award-winning musician and actress Queen Latifah at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California on Saturday, March 16.

In addition, legendary R&B singer and songwriter Frankie Beverly will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. That award is presented to those individuals who’ve made significant contributions to the entertainment industry and to civil rights. Responsible for such timeless hits as “Joy and Pain” and the summer barbecue anthem “Before I Let Go”, Beverly will receive the award at the NAACP Image Awards Dinner which will be held on March 14. He recently received the Living Legend Award at the 2024 Urban One Honors

“It is our distinct honor to celebrate New Edition and Frankie Beverly–two musical icons that have been instrumental in shaping our cultural landscape with their remarkable talent and enduring influence,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson in a statement announcing the honors. We recognize the power of their artistry in showcasing the enduring power of Black excellence in the arts.”

“New Edition and Frankie Beverly’s influence has laid the foundation for modern R&B, shaping the genre’s sonic landscape and resonance in numerous ways. From the acclaimed ‘The New Edition Story’ on BET to our commemoration of Frankie Beverly at the 2012 BET Awards, we are thrilled to celebrate these musical luminaries, whose melodies are intricately woven into the very fabric of our culture,”  said BET Executive Vice President of Music Programming & Music Strategy Connie Orlando in a statement.

The NAACP Image Awards will air on BET and be simulcast on CBS.

“It is our distinct honor to celebrate New Edition and Frankie Beverly – two musical icons that have been instrumental in shaping our cultural landscape with their remarkable talent and enduring influence,” NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a statement. “We recognize the power of their artistry in showcasing the enduring power of Black excellence in the arts.”

Connie Orlando, EVP specials, music programming & music strategy at BET, added: “New Edition and Frankie Beverly’s influence has laid the foundation for modern R&B, shaping the genre’s sonic landscape and resonance in numerous ways. … We are thrilled to celebrate these musical luminaries, whose melodies are intricately woven into the very fabric of our culture.”

Both acts have received Lifetime Achievement Awards on the separate BET Awards. Beverly’s group, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, received the honor in 2012. New Edition was honored five years later. In addition, BET aired the miniseries The New Edition Story (produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment), which aired over three nights in January 2017.

New Edition landed five No. 1 hits on what is now Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in the 1980s and ’90s: “Candy Girl,” “Cool It Now,” “Mr. Telephone Man,” “Can You Stand the Rain” and “Hit Me Off.” In addition, group members Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant and the members of spinoff group Bell Biv DeVoe (Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe) have achieved success on their own. New Edition’s The Culture Tour was named the top R&B concert of 2022. Most recently the group has embarked on a residency at the Wynn Las Vegas.

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly had a pair of No. 1 hits on what is now Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in the ’80s – “Back in Stride” and “Can’t Get Over You.” The group had 29 hits on that chart between 1977 and 1994. Remarkably, Beverly was the sole author of every single one of them. In 2019, Beyoncé covered Beverly’s 1981 hit with Maze, “Before I Let Go,” on Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé and in her corresponding album, Homecoming: The Live Album. Beyoncé was born two weeks after Maze’s record entered what is now known as Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, a sign of the staying power of Beverly’s songs.

Both New Edition and Beverly have been under-recognized by the Grammy Awards. New Edition received just one Grammy nod — best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocal for “If It Isn’t Love” 35 years ago. Beverly has never been nominated for a Grammy – on his own or with Maze.

NAACP will recognize winners in non–televised Image Awards categories from March 11-13 on its website, during the Awards Dinner on March 14 and Fashion Show on March 15.

Word?! Jake Paul Set To Fight Mike Tyson This Summer

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson | Art

Source: Netflix / Netflix

For the past few years Jake Paul has been making quite a name for himself in the boxing arena by putting together a rather impressive record at 9-1, and now the internet celebrity turned professional fighter will be taking on one of the greatest boxers of all-time: “Iron” Mike Tyson.

Yes, you read that right. The 27-year-old celebrity/boxer/WWE wrestler will be facing off against the 57-year-old legend at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas and luckily for everyone it will be streaming live and exclusively on Netflix on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Why they decided to make this fight happen and who actually asked for this, we have no clue, but it’s going to happen (for whatever reason) and best believe everyone who has a subscription to Netflix will be tuning come July 20th.

In a press release for the event, the two men expressed their excitement over the event and promised a helluva fight.

“It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard. Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons,” said Jake Paul in a statement. “Within just two and a half years of founding MVP, we’re about to produce the biggest fight in history, a fight in the biggest NFL stadium in the US, broadcast live, on the biggest streaming platform in the world – a testament to all we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time. Whether you’re tuning in on Netflix or showing out in person, whether you’re team Paul or team Tyson, or whether you’re a lifelong boxing fan or watching your first fight, you’re not going to want to miss this event. I could not be more excited to make this amazing fight available to all Netflix subscribers alongside the hardest hitter of all time, Mike Tyson, on Saturday, July 20th. My sights are set on becoming a world champion, and now I have a chance to prove myself against the greatest heavyweight champion ever, the baddest man on the planet and the most dangerous boxer of all time. This will be the fight of a lifetime.”

Mike Tyson meanwhile seems ready to lay the smacketh down on Jake Paul and show him how the OG’s of the game used to do.

“I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas,” said Mike Tyson in a statement. “He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT.  It’s a full circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him.”

Prime Mike Tyson would’ve easily washed Jake Paul in a round or two. Weed Entrepreneur Mike Tyson at the age of 57? Yeah, we’re not sure how this one is going to end. Still, we’ll be tuning in to see how everything goes down.

No word on who will be on the undercard or who will be the “co-main event” but regardless y’all already know this fight will be trending all over social media come the night of July 20th.

Will you be watching Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson? Are you even interested in such a fight? Let us know in the comments section below.

Bon Jovi Ready to Rock With Four-Part Hulu Documentary: First Look

Woah, we’re halfway there! Bon Jovi is the subject of an upcoming deep-dive four-part docuseries that drops next month on Hulu. Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story chronicles the band’s epic, four-decade career, a journey that began in Jersey Shore Clubs and reached rock music’s zenith.

In a two-and-a-half minute trailer that dropped on Thursday (March 7), singer Jon Bon Jovi excitedly says “I’ve got a story to tell” over the strains of the band’s iconic hit “You Give Love a Bad Name,” as estranged guitarist Richie Sambora jokes, “I’m excited… are we telling the truth, are we gonna lie? What are we gonna do?”

Bon Jovi reveals that making it as a rock band was the only path forward for him. “There was no plan B in my life, ever,” he says over images from his early days grinding it out in bars. “Bon Jovi was all or nothing.”

Trending on Billboard

There is, of course, plenty of footage of the band’s early shaggy-haired period, with elder Garden State statesman Bruce Springsteen remembering the first time he saw that “young kid” from his backyard “makin’ some noise.” The group’s members recall the rocket ride to fame they embarked on, which got super-charged with their third studio album, 1986’s Slippery When Wet. That album marked the beginning of Jon Bon Jovi and Co. dominating sales charts around the globe, unleashing a stream of hits, including the Billboard Hot 100 leaders “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

The singer recalls the day they wrote “Prayer,” saying the group didn’t “think much of the song,” which Sambora boasts is still their best effort to date. “Jon’s choruses demand to be sung by 20,000 people in an arena,” Springsteen says.

Slippery When Wet was the first of the band’s six leaders on the Billboard 200, an album that ignited a global fanbase and ensured the New Jersey favorites would, indeed, play arenas and stadiums for as long as they remained active.

It hasn’t all been a bed of roses. The ride has been stacked with triumphs and setbacks, good times and bad, and “public moments of friction,” all of which are captured in the series. The trailer hints at the wages of success, with Bon Jovi saying the global fame and wild antics “almost killed us,” and Sambora adding that he didn’t regret leaving in 2013, but lamenting “how I did it.”

All episodes will arrive for streaming April 26, retelling the Bon Jovi story with personal videos, unreleased early demos, original lyrics, and never-before-seen photos, according to Hulu.

The series joins the band in February 2022, an uncertain moment in their odyssey, four years after their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a decade after guitarist/co-songwriter Sambora’s departure at a time when Bon Jovi was battling a vocal injury which required major reconstructive surgery.

In addition to Springsteen and the other members of the band, longtime manager Doc McGee appears in the series.

Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story is directed and executive produced by Gotham Chopra (“Kobe Bryant’s Muse,” “Man in the Arena,” “Tom vs. Time”). Executive producers are Giselle Parets and Ameeth Sankaran for ROS, and the series is produced and edited by Alex Trudeau Viriato.

Hit-Boy Reveals How ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ Became a No. 1 Hit

While a country smash from Beyoncé came as a surprise, for Grammy Award-winning producer Hit-Boy, the success of “Texas Hold ’Em” is a testament to the singularity of Beyoncé’s ear and vision. “She would be the only person that would think to bring Hit-Boy in on some country music,” he says.

Although Beyoncé released the song during Super Bowl LVIII in February, the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit has been gestating for about two years. Hit-Boy — who has worked on every solo Beyoncé studio album since her 2013 self-titled visual release — recalls first hearing a “kind of bare” demo consisting primarily of guitar and some drums, to which he added background elements like synthesizers. “It’s a texture, it’s something that you might not even be paying attention to, but it’s adding flavor to it and bringing more emotion out,” he says. “Texas Hold ’Em” remained in the vault before serving as an introduction to Beyoncé’s forthcoming Act II — though Hit-Boy wasn’t even aware the single was on its way until two days before it dropped.

Hit-Boy received an email asking him to “sign off on this joint called ‘Texas Hold ’Em.’ They was trying to tell me it was urgent without telling me it was urgent,” he quips. Less than 48 hours later, the song was rising on the charts. And in its second tracking week (Feb. 16-22), the song more than doubled its streams to 29 million (up 51%) and earned 6.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 233%), according to Luminate, all resulting in a historic No. 1. Not only has “Texas Hold ’Em” made Beyoncé the first Black woman to top the Hot 100 with a country song, but it has also spurred massive streaming gains for other Black women in country music — from Linda Martell to Tanner Adell.

Trending on Billboard

Hit-Boy credits the track’s “authenticity” for its instant success with global audiences. “My favorite part is the cadence. You can really feel her country roots when you listen to it,” he says. “It’s the melody and the movement … when you can get people to move, that’s a real thing.” Nonetheless, that sentiment wasn’t universal upon the song’s release, with an Oklahoma radio station initially refusing to play “Texas Hold ’Em” because it wasn’t aware that the track was a country song. (The station eventually started spinning it.)

While he’s reluctant to reveal specific details about Act II, Hit-Boy does confirm that, despite the genre pivot, Beyoncé’s album-making process remains unchanged. “[She] picks out what she likes and places it where she wants to,” he says. “She’s a real producer … [she] has that vision from start to finish.”

This story will appear in the March 9, 2024, issue of Billboard.
