Universal Music’s Pandora Policy Change Is a Matter of $135M in Annual Artist Royalties

A year ago, Matt Najdowski, like many business managers for top artists, was routinely going over royalty statements when he discovered an unusual plunge in revenue.

For years, Pandora, the internet-radio streaming service, had paid 50% of song royalties to the artists through a collection agency called SoundExchange. But suddenly, artists signed to Universal Music Group were receiving a much lower percentage, similar to what they received from on-demand streaming services like Spotify or YouTube. And the payments were now arriving directly from UMG instead.

Najdowski researched further and learned UMG was able to change the way it reported Pandora revenue because Pandora itself had changed. In 2016, the streaming service began evolving from webcasting to a Spotify-style “search and play what you want” model. Because Pandora now offers an interactive service, rather than a non-interactive webcaster, it needed to make new deals with labels rather than relying on a government-mandated compulsory license at a standardized rate.

Trending on Billboard

As such, UMG and other labels were able to change the flow of royalties so they collected and paid them directly — rather than SoundExchange distributing to artists, as law mandates under these compulsory licenses. With UMG’s change in policy last year it became the first and only label so far, according to sources, to take advantage of this change. With that, the royalty splits for artists changed, too, from a 50% split through SoundExchange to whatever, often smaller, percentage their record deals dictated for on-demand streaming revenues. That’s significant as the world’s biggest record label contributed $135 million to SoundExchange as part of its Pandora share for artists, according to Billboard estimates based on financial reports and other public information.

“That specific royalty stream can range from a couple hundred dollars per month to a couple thousand. It can be a significant amount of money,” says Najdowski, royalty manager for Farris, Self & Moore. This change in accounting, he adds, “is more or less taking money out of [artist’s] pockets.”

Perhaps most notably, Najdowski discovered that the many UMG artists who are unrecouped – meaning they have yet to earn back the money the label spent on recording, marketing and other costs – were receiving a worrisome amount: zero. These acts were previously being paid directly by SoundExchange, so their unrecouped status with UMG was not an issue for these royalties. “A lot is being withheld, and it feels like a grab for money from the labels,” says Heather Gruber, royalty manager for Fineman West, a business-management firm that represents artists.

Although Pandora has struggled in recent years – monthly users have dropped from 81.5 million in 2014 to 46 million in 2023 – it remains a potent outlet for hitmakers such as SZA, Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Durk, as well as bubbling-under singles like contemporary-Christian singer-songwriter Lauren Daigle’s “These Are the Days.” Newer artists rely on the exposure, too, and Pandora royalties have provided crucial revenue while they absorb touring and merch expenses. “If you’re making millions of dollars, this isn’t going to have a big impact on you,” says Harold Papineau, associate lawyer for King, Holmes, Paterno and Soriano, which represents Metallica and others. “But if you’re living paycheck to paycheck, then this is a significant problem. Now you’ve lost money that you may have relied on to pay your bills.”

In a statement, a UMG representative responded by explaining the difference between interactive (like Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music) and non-interactive streaming services (like internet radio). For the former, recording royalties are “subject to direct negotiation between an individual rights owner and the service,” the rep said, adding that Pandora “has substantially changed its functionality such that it has evolved into an interactive service, where users can select tracks on demand.” In other words: The label has every right to make this change.

Still, UMG didn’t fully change the way it reported the royalties to artists until 2022, and it caught many business managers and music attorneys by surprise. “It kind of happened in the dead of night,” says Mike Merriman, a business manager for the firm PARR3 who represents DJ Alison Wonderland, singer 6lack and producer Louis Bell, among others. “It does create some ambiguity and lack of transparency.”

When the Pandora change first kicked in, business managers were confused about the streaming service’s identity. “We’re still running analysis on it,” says Erica Rosa, owner/vp of royalties and contract compliance at FBMM, a business management firm that represents top artists. “I’ve asked a lot of questions to attorneys and various industry figures: ‘How would you define Pandora? Would you consider it to be an interactive or non-interactive stream? I don’t know that anyone has given a clear definitive answer yet.”

Jelly Roll’s Wife Bunnie Xo Documents Singer’s Major Dental Surgery on TikTok: ‘I Want a Pretty Smile’

Nobody likes to feel like their grill is busted. Especially when they show off their chompers on stage and in interviews all the time. That might explain why Jelly Roll recently went in for some major dental reconstruction, which, of course, was thoroughly documented by his wife, Bunnie Xo.

In a hilarious TikTok video, Jelly, 39, lays back in the dentist’s chair while visibly sedated on the dental good stuff to undergo a series of procedures, including wisdom teeth removal, cavity filling and a replacement of his 20-year-old veneers. “I’m at the practice getting all my teeth redone,” Jelly smiles in the minute-long clip in which he leans back with a nasal cannula taped to his face to keep the oxygen flowing.

“I’ve had these same veneers for 20 years,” he explains, smiling wide to display his chompers. “I’m finally getting them replaced, and I’m getting some implants and I’m getting some cavities and some wisdom teeth pulled out. I’m doing a lot of s–t. Completely mouth reconstructive surgery kinda.”

When the doc asks him how he’s feeling, the singer says “sexy” as the room breaks out in laughter, adding “I’m feeling great, man. I feel like I’m finally taking care of stuff.” Loving parter Bunnie tells him, “I’m proud of you!,” as Jelly says “I want a pretty smile.” After Bunnie assures him that he’s going to have the “most beautiful” smile, Jelly Roll reveals why his dental health is so important to him.

“I had an ugly smile when I was a kid. People picked on me and made fun of me and stuff — haha, b–ch!,” he laughs. At one point the dentist informs Jelly that he’s biting his fingers, teasing that he might bite him back, before the clip concludes with a sweet shot of Bunnie’s tatted-up, long-fingernailed hand holding Jelly’s equally inked up paw. A post-surgery clip then catches the singer as he’s leaving the office, declaring, “I slept good” as he’s walked to a waiting car while flashing the metal horns two-finger salute.

On Thursday (March 14), Jelly Roll was announced as one of the first round of performers for the 2024 CMA Fest in Nashville, slated to take place from June 6-9. Other acts slated to take the stage at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium include Kelsea BalleriniBrothers OsborneLuke Bryan, Jordan Davis, HARDY, Cody Johnson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ashley McBryde, Parker McCollum, Megan Moroney, Jon Pardi, Carly Pearce, The War And Treaty, Thomas Rhett, Keith Urban, Lainey Wilson and Bailey Zimmerman, with additional performances and collaborations to be announced in coming weeks.

Zayn Makes Surprise Appearance on ‘Tonight Show’ to Tease ‘What I Am’ Single

Zayn has long been a man of few words. The former One Direction singer and solo star made a surprise appearance on The Tonight Show on Wednesday night (March 13), and in keeping with his let-the-music-do-the-talking demeanor, the 31-year-old’s mid-monologue walk-on was silent, but heady.

Carrying a coffee mug and a note card, Zayn casually sidled up to host Jimmy Fallon as the studio audience lost their collective minds. Wearing an all-black ensemble and sporting a short beard, the singer walked up behind Fallon’s desk and cued up his new ballad, “What I Am” on the host’s laptop before handing him the note.

He then shook Fallon’s hand, nodded, gave the audience a look and casually walked off amid the screams of delight. “Zayn! What’s Zayn doing here?” Fallon said in mock surprise as the singer — his knee-length leather duster flapping behind him — walked off without a word. “Jimmy, look to your right for my album,” Fallon said, reading the note from the vocalist who announced his fourth solo album, Room Under the Stairs, earlier in the day.

Fallon then held up the album’s moody cover, which features a silhouette of Zayn’s face superimposed with an image of a space below a set of stairs in a home, and announced that the single is out on Friday (March 15), with the LP following on May 17.

The follow-up to Zayn’s 2021 album Nobody Is Listening will come after the singer released the single “Love Like This” last year. In addition to the new LP, Zayn will co-star in the upcoming animated feature 10 Lives, for which he also wrote new music and performed a duet with Bridgerton star Simone Ashley; Zayn will also be the executive producer of the movie and oversee its musical creative direction.

‘Ladies & Gentlemen, We Are *NSYNC’: Inside Justin Timberlake’s Historic One-Night-Only LA Concert

It finally happened.

Following all the rumors and cryptic memes last fall that led to an MTV VMAs appearance and a red-carpet group photo thanks to *NSYNC’s new song for the Trolls Band Together soundtrack, fans were left desperate for a live performance from the boy band. After all, it was a band that made its name with performative music videos, blockbuster stadium tours and iconic choreography, so when fans think “*NSYNC,” they think performance. Fans were clamoring for a full tour, sure, but they really would have settled for the band singing live together just one more time.

Well, on Wednesday night (March 13), we got that one more time. More than a decade after they last performed together at the 2013 Video Music Awards as part of Justin Timberlake’s VMA Vanguard Award medley, they once again hit JT’s stage, this time for a one-night-only concert at The Wiltern in Los Angeles ahead of the Friday (March 15) release of his sixth solo album, Everything I Thought It Was.

It all started with a trip down memory lane, when DJ Andrew Hypes played a series of hit Timberlake features, including Timbaland’s “Give It to Me,” Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail” and 50 Cent’s “Ayo Technology.” Justin had included this segment in his other two pre-release shows as well, at his hometown concert at Memphis’ Orpheum Theatre on Jan. 19 and his show at New York’s Irving Plaza on Jan. 31. Hypes had also played a handful of *NSYNC songs at those concerts, but on Wednesday night, when he dropped the first *NSYNC song — “Gone” from 2000’s Celebrity — the curtains opened behind Timberlake to reveal his four bandmates singing harmony on the chorus.

“Ear-piercing” doesn’t properly describe the volume of the fan reaction in the room. Maybe eardrum-shattering. Or “book an appointment for your ENT to investigate the possibility of shriek-induced hearing loss” levels. This was 15 songs into an already epic concert, which included three of Timberlake’s five Billboard Hot 100 solo No. 1 hits and pretty much every other song that comes to mind when you think of Justin. But there was truly a before and after point of the concert from that moment on.

“I don’t know what to do after that,” Timberlake admitted once he was alone again onstage, before saying, “But this” and giving us one final song (what more could this crowd possibly ask for?), ending the night with 2013’s “Mirrors.”

So let’s take a step back and look at all the highlights from this concert, lest it go down in history as an *NSYNC reunion and nothing more. In fact, there were two other surprise guests who popped up during the nearly two-hour show and a host of other special moments. Below, find all the best moments – yes, of course including the reunion – from Billboard’s vantage point as a lucky crowd member at the history-making show.

JT and *NSYNC made hearts race, and set charts alight, during their golden run in the 1990s and early 2000s, before going on hiatus in 2002. The boy band — or, now, man band — was back to their old ways in L.A., a full-body workout ahead of Timberlake’s Forget Tomorrow World Tour.

Tonight’s “One Night Show” will be a hard act to follow. Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass performed their smash ’90s hits “Bye Bye Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me” and debuted the new collaborative track “Paradise.”

Trending on Billboard

The surprise reunion was their first onstage since an appearance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards last September. Prior to that, the “It’s Gonna Be Me” singers last strutted their stuff as the full, five-piece unit back in 2013, for JT’s Video Vanguard Award medley.

Later, in 2019, Chasez, Kirkpatrick, Fatone and Bass joined Ariana Grande onstage during her headlining Coachella set for a performance of “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart.” On that occasion, Timberlake wasn’t in the place.

Timberlake did return to his roots — and the studio — with *NSYNC in 2023 for “Better Place,” which accompanied the JT-starring animated family film Trolls Band Together. The track bowed at No. 25, for *NSYNC’s lucky 13th appearance on the Billboard Hot 100.

All told, *NSYNC has earned six top 10 hits on the Hot 100, including “Bye Bye Bye” (No. 4), “This I Promise You” (No. 5) and “It’s Gonna Be Me” (No. 1, two weeks). On the Billboard 200, the lads have notched four top 10 titles, including the No. 1 albums No Strings Attached (eight weeks) and Celebrity (one week).

JT’s concert acts as a curtain raiser for the release Friday (March 15) of his sixth solo album Everything I Thought It Was and the kick-off of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour on April 29 at Rogers Arena, in Vancouver, Canada.

The forthcoming album, led by the single “Selfish,” marks JT’s first solo release in more than five years. EITIW is the follow-up to his 2018 solo LP Man of the Woods, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Earlier this week, Timberlake had a debut performance of the EITIW song “No Angels” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

El Fantasma’s ‘El Exitoso’ Travels to No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay Chart

“El Exitoso” climbs 5-1 on Regional Mexican Airplay with a robust 72% gain in audience impressions, to 8.3 million, earned during the March 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate.

Trending on Billboard

As “El Exitoso,” released last October via Afinarte, advances to the summit, it ejects “Por El Contrario,” by Becky G, Leonardo Aguilar, and Angela Aguilar, from the lead. The latter falls to No. 3 with a 20% drop in impressions, to 6.8 million.

With the new success, El Fantasma captures his sixth No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay, which began when “Encantadora” took over the radio ranking for four weeks in 2019. Here’s a recap of all the champs:

Peak, Title, Artist, Weeks at No. 1
June 1, 2019, “Encantadora,” four
Aug. 14, 2021, “Soy Buen Amigo,” one
Sept. 25, 2021, “Tus Desprecios,” with Pepe Aguilar, one
Oct. 1, 2022, “Soldado Caído,” one
Sept. 9, 2023, “La Vida Cara,” one
March 16, 2024, “El Exitoso”

Thanks to “El Exitoso,” Afinarte leads Regional Mexican Airplay for a second term in 2024, after the label last led through Los Dos Carnales’s “Gracias a Ti,” for one week in charge on the Feb. 24-dated list. The label picks up its 10th champ overall.

Beyond its Regional Mexican Radio reign, “El Exitoso” also conquers new territory on the overall Latin Airplay ranking, where it flies No. 18-2. With the rise, El Fantasma collects his 10th top 10 there, and achieves his best chart performance to date. Previously the singer-songwriter reached a high of No. 4 with “El Selectivo” in May 2023.
