Luis Figueroa’s ‘A Escondidas’ Lands in Tropical Airplay Top 10

Luis Figueroa secures his eighth top 10 on Billboard’s Tropical Airplay chart as “A Escondidas” surges 14-7 on the March 23-dated list.

“A Escondidas” lands in the upper region on the tropical radio ranking as the Greatest Gainer of the week, thanks to a 57% gain in audience impressions, to 1.67 million, earned in the U.S. during the March 8-14 tracking week, according to Luminate.

“A Escondidas” follows Figueroa’s last top 10, the two-week No. 1 “Bandido,” which crowned the Oct. 21-28, 2023-dated charts; the only salsa to lead the list that year. All of the other No. 1s were bachatas, a merengue track and one mambo tune.

The new single, the third song on Figueroa’ EP Voy a Ti, nominated for a Grammy for best tropical Latin album in 2023, was co-written by Figueroa and Lenier.

As mentioned, with “A Escondidas,” Figueroa collects his eighth top 10 on Tropical Airplay. Here’s a recap of his top 10 collection:

Peak, Peak Date, Title, Weeks at No. 1
No. 1, July 31, 2021, “Hasta El Sol De Hoy,” one
No. 6, Oct. 30, 2021, “Si Tú Me Dices Ven”
No. 3, Aug. 13, 2022, “Todavía Te Espero”
No. 7, Sept. 10, 2022, “Vienes”
No. 4, Feb. 4, 2023, “Fiesta Contigo”
No. 7, June 3, 2023, “La Luz”
No. 1, Oct. 21, 2023, “Bandido,” two
No. 7, March 23, 2024, “A Escondidas”

Notably, Figueroa earned his first top 10 on Tropical Airplay less than three years ago, placing two or more in every year since, when the one-week champ “Hasta El Sol De Hoy” ruled the July 31, 2021-dated list.

Further, with eight top 10s on his account since 2021, the Puerto Rican breaks out of a tie with Victor Manuelle for the fourth-most top 10s on the decade of the ‘20s. He now trails Prince Royce who continues to lead the pack with 12 top 10s this decade, Romeo Santos’ with 10, and Marc Anthony with nine.

The new chart achievement arrives as Figueroa embarks on his first tour with Victor Manuelle this spring.

Watch Metallica Cover ‘Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding’ in Front of Elton John & Bernie Taupin

Elton John and Bernie Taupin were the guests of honor Wednesday night (March 20) at DAR Constitution Hall in D.C., where the Library of Congress awarded the songwriting duo with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. And to help celebrate the pair, Metallica showed out to perform one of their most beloved songs — “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.”

Taking the stage in front of a vast audience — which included the Rocket Man himself sitting front row center — the heavy metal band added their own characteristic edge to John and Taupin’s bitter Goodbye Yellow Brick Road showstopper. “Oh, it kills me to think of you with another man/ I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan,” sang frontman James Hetfield.

“But my guitar couldn’t hold you, so I split the band,” he continued as Kirk Hammett, Rob Trujillo and Lars Ulrich rocked out on the guitar, bass and drums, respectively. “Love lies bleeding in my hands.”

Trending on Billboard

Joni Mitchell, Charlie Puth, Maren Morris, Annie Lennox and Brandi Carlile also delivered covers of classic John-Taupin tracks Thursday, with Sir Elton closing out the lineup with piano renditions of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” and “Your Song.” At one point, he and the night’s other performers all posed for a photo together onstage.

Fans will be able to see the full concert at 8 p.m. ET Monday, April 8, when the showcase airs on PBS stations.

Leading up to the show, Hetfield spoke to Billboard about his favorite of the duo’s creations: “That would be ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.’” “It’s beautiful, it’s epic — and I love the lyrics as well,” he added on the red carpet. “The castle, the wonderful dust … and what does it mean after that.”

Lainey Wilson Shares 5 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Heart Like a Truck’ | Billboard’s Women in Music 2024

Lainey Wilson shares 5 things you didn’t know about her hit “Heart Like a Truck” backstage at Billboard’s Women in Music 2024.

Lainey Wilson
My name is Lainey Wilson, and here are five things that you might not have known about my song “Heart Like A Truck.”

I wrote it during the pandemic.

I wrote it with two of my best friends. We like to call ourselves the Heart Wranglers.

We initially wrote the song really sped up and kind of rockin’ and then we ended up slowing it back down.

Every time I sing the song, I have to prepare myself mentally for that eight-second note at the end.

And also the song continues to change meanings for me. I feel like as my journey changes, it doesn’t mean that challenges go away. And I feel like every time I get to get on stage and sing it, I’m saying it right from the heart all over again.

Cody Jinks’ New Album Marks a ‘Change’: ‘I’m Trying to Set That Precedent’

Cody Jinks knows the songs and topics on his album, Change the Game, out tomorrow (March 22), could be perceived as a bit of a departure from the hard-charging brand of country-rock his fans have come to expect. But the alternations came out of life-changing necessity.

“I was reading something somebody wrote online the other day, like, ‘This isn’t the old outlaw stuff we’ve come to know Cody for. What’s he doing?’” Jinks tells Billboard. “Well, that guy would’ve died. That guy looked in the mirror and said, ‘You need to slow down.’ I had to get into therapy to start dealing with some things.”

The rollicking “Outlaws and Mustangs,” the first release from the album, celebrates a freewheeling, creative spirit, while the title track is the Texas native’s triumphant manifesto to fulfilling his independent vision: “I’m the punk who says I did it my own way,” he sings. However, the song “Change the Game” also signifies major changes, personally and professionally, including his rigorous sobriety journey.

Trending on Billboard

Jinks launched his career as frontman for thrash metal band Unchecked Aggression before he began issuing country-leaning projects in 2008, proving equally adept at freewheeling hardcore rock and stone-cold, Haggard-esque country songs such as “I Don’t Trust My Memories Anymore,” from his 2021 album Mercy. On Change the Game, Jinks leans into a more subdued, yet deeply confessional, sound. Jinks’ longtime bass player Joshua Thompson produced the album with Ryan Hewitt, known for his work with American Aquarium and Turnpike Troubadours, as well as Jinks’ 2016 I’m Not the Devil.

The sparsely acoustic “Wasted” details waking up on a stranger’s couch in the same clothes from the night before, with bloodshot eyes and staring at the bottom of a bottle. He wrote “Sober Thing” about his slow battle to relinquish a two-decade dependence on whiskey.

“It was difficult to write some of those songs. It was difficult to sing some of them in the studio,” Jinks says. “I pushed myself hard. I pushed the band hard. They knew how personal the record was for me because of things I was going through in life, with my family, wife [Rebecca] and marriage. Every aspect of that emotion is on the record.” He says therapy has given him “a new appreciation for my wife and the beautiful kids I have. I’ve always held my wife in high regard, but God, dude, she’s supported me for almost three decades and she’s seen the ugliest sides of me.”

Elsewhere on the record, “The Working Man” praises a relentless and ingrained work ethic, regardless of how time and technology might shift specific duties. On the album closing piano-driven ballad “What You Love,” he maintains that “a life played safe is a life not lived.”

He wrote the moody “A Few More Ghosts” — in which he wishes that apparitions were responsible for his nightly awakenings rather than his own inner demons — with Brad Martin, Jake Worthington and Adam Hood, after Jinks discovered he had accidentally triple-booked a writing appointment.

“We all showed up and it was evident that I didn’t know I had booked myself for all of those guys on the same freaking day,” Jinks says with a chuckle. “I thought to myself, ‘This is either going to be a train wreck or a cool, happy accident.’ I’ve known Adam for years, but I had not met Jake and barely knew Brad. I just said, ‘If y’all are as crazy as I am, you want to write some crazy shit,’ and Adam just starts rattling off some dark stuff. I couldn’t quit singing it for two days after we wrote it.” Jinks commemorated the song by having the title, along with an image of a Zippo lighter, tattooed on his leg.

He teamed with singer-songwriter and frequent tour mate Pearl Aday (daughter of the late vocalist Meat Loaf) on a new rendition of Faith No More’s “Take This Bottle.” Initially, they planned the song for a side project but Thompson and Hewitt felt it belonged on the new album. “They were like, ‘This needs to be on the record. It’s too good.’ When we’ve performed it live, I get chills every time she sings that second verse.”

Throughout his career, Jinks has proudly found success outside of the major label system: I’m Not the Devil debuted at No. 4 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart. His song “Loud and Heavy” has been certified multi-platinum by the RIAA, while “Hippies & Cowboys” and “Must Be the Whiskey” have gone platinum.

After releasing his first six studio albums independently, Jinks linked with Rounder for 2018’s Lifers before launching his own label, Late August Records, in 2019. Change the Game marks his fourth studio album released via The Orchard-distributed Late August.

Jinks has remained committed to his DIY ethic. He parted ways with longtime management company True Grit Management, and now manages his career with a team that includes a number of Late August employees and former staffers from True Grit.

“I just told everyone, ‘I promise you that I’ll work as hard as I can to make sure that we keep moving forward,’ and I didn’t lose anybody, fortunately,” Jinks says. In taking on management duties, “I got a crash course, because there’s things artists know and then there are things that managers and label people know. I was on the road 200-plus days per year for many years, but now some of that time is spent on the phone or traveling for meetings. I needed to stop being on the road so much, but I still wanted to work.”

Jinks hopes his DIY business model can help change the game for other artists and serve as a reminder that success doesn’t necessarily require major-label backing.

“If you’re any good at this, people are going to start shoving paper in front of your face and then you’re locked in. My former manager and I had a great relationship for a long time and never signed anything,” he says. He advises artists to keep their own publishing and master recordings: “Those are the two most important things. You don’t need record labels anymore, and it’s getting to the point where you may not need managers … there’s too many people in this business that take the artists’ money.”

The WME-repped Jinks continues his steady touring schedule, mixing his own headlining shows this year with support slots on Luke Combs’ stadium tour.

“We got a brand-new setup, more lights,” Jinks says, “It’s going to be a great year and we can’t wait to get out there.”

Young Miko Opens Up About Her Creative Process, Friendship With Her Producer Mauro & More | Billboard’s Women In Music 2024

Young Miko revealed five things you may not know about her music.

Young Miko:
Hey guys, my name is Young Miko and this is five things you probably don’t know about my music

Okay, number one, I write all of my songs with my producer, Mauro. He’s an amazing songwriter, not just a producer. I love him so much.

Number two, I think my drink of choice in the studio is wine. We like to have wine every now and then just to get the vibe going and that usually works.

My new single “Curita” just dropped. We recorded it in Electric Garden Studios in New York City and it was a super blast.

Number four, I like to have my friends in the studio, but then when it’s time to record, I kick everybody out because I’ll get nervous. Only Mauro and me in the booth.

And number five, I don’t have a specific way about how I write a song. It can go any way, I can come in inspired or it can be an old song I already have and switch it up. I just see how the day goes.

And those are five things you did not know about my music.

Gavin Rossdale Calls Gwen Stefani Divorce His ‘Clearest, Simplest Shame’: ‘I Feel Bad for My Kids’

Gavin Rossdale got vulnerable about his divorce from Gwen Stefani while speaking to Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes on their Amy and T.J. podcast on Thursday (May 21).

Without naming her directly, the 58-year-old rocker spoke about Stefani while bonding with the former Good Morning America anchors — whose respective divorces from their former partners and subsequent romance turned into major headline fodder in 2023 — over going through relationship drama in the public eye.

“My clearest, simplest shame,” he began. “I never thought I’d ever get divorced. Sometimes I wish that, when you see the kids, there’s a loss. It would be nice if there was more of a connection with the person that made them with me.”

Trending on Billboard

Rossdale and the No Doubt frontwoman tied the knot in 2002 after six years of dating, but parted ways in 2015. The pair share three children — 17-year-old Kingston, 15-year-old Zuma, and 10-year-old Apollo.

Stefani has since remarried to Blake Shelton, whom she met on The Voice, and Rossdale is now dating musician Xhoana.

“I feel bad for my kids,” Rossdale continued on the podcast. “I wish I could have just figured out a way to not have that in their lives. It wasn’t fun for me to be from a broken home … It can be quite debilitating for kids. The overriding thing is you don’t want to let your kids down.”

The musician also added, “I’d never wanna overly say anything negative about their mom … It’s not right.”

The “Love Remains The Same” singer — whose band will celebrate its 30th anniversary by embarking on a 32-date North American tour in July — opened up about his parenting setup with Stefani last year. “I think you can go one of two ways,” he revealed. “You can either do everything together and really co-parent and see how that goes, or you can just parent. And I think we just parent.”

“We’re really different people,” he added at the time. “I don’t think there’s much similarity in the way we bring them up but I think that gives them an incredible perspective to then choose which pieces of those two lives they’d like to inherit and move on with and which part of themselves come out of the whole process.”

Listen to Rossdale open up about his and Stefani’s divorce below.
