Jon Batiste Hopes His Work on Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Helps ‘Dismantle the Genre Machine’

Jon Batiste recently reflected on not only what it meant to work on Beyoncé‘s Cowboy Carter, but also how her country album is dismantling genre barriers.

The five-time Grammy winner co-wrote and produced the album opener, “AMERIICAN REQUIEM,” and he broke down the process by sharing a photo to his Instagram on Saturday (March 30) showing him and legendary producer No I.D. (real name Ernest Dion Wilson) in the studio, as well as their text exchange with Batiste writing out the chorus, pre-chorus and part of the first verse.

“This is the moment yall, where we dismantle the genre machine. I was happy to produce and write for AMERIICAN REQUIEM, along with Beyoncé and Dion. When I catch inspiration, the words and chords pour out of me. What an honor to then see how brilliantly Beyoncé made them her own and THEN further enhanced the lyrical statement, synthesizing it into the larger body of work,” he wrote. “After the harrowing vocal prelude that happens to start Cowboy Carter, you get to hear these words that read like a proclaimation. ‘Do you hear me or do you fear me?’ or better yet in our Louisiana vernacular ‘Looka dere, Looka dere.’”

Trending on Billboard

He continued, saying that he and Dion embarked on a “creative journey” asking questions about “the state of music” today. “We’d been having these conversations for years but something about recent times has felt ripe with the power of actualization. When I picked up my guitar and notebook to write this song I put my trust in God to liberate my creative mind, as I always do when channeling inspiration.”

But Batiste shared another conversation he had with a another legendary producer, Quincy Jones, that Jones even wrote as part of the foreword to Batiste’s 2021 album We Are, which won album of the year at the 2022 Grammy Awards. “‘It’s up to you to de categorize American music!!’ which is what Duke Ellington told him,” Batiste continued. “I really believe that is our generation’s role, led by a few artists willing to take this leap.”

He also praised Cowboy Carter as a “brilliant album, a work of such unimaginable impact and artistic firepower by a once in a generation artist. So glad that we finally got to collaborate with each other at this time,” Batiste wrote. “Producing and writing for AMERIICAN REQUIEM was an example of extraordinary alignment—when many leading artists see a similar vision at the same time, that’s when you know a major shift is happening. A new era, long time coming. Let’s liberate ourselves from genre and break the barriers that marginalize who we are and the art that we create. Grateful and impressed by my brother @dixson and the other collaborators who helped make this album opening statement possible.”

YesJulz Says She Will Be Countersuing Ye FKA Kanye West After Being Fired

HipHopWired Featured Video

Namesake : Front Row - Paris Fashion Week - Menswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025

It seems Ye FKA Kanye West has yet another legal battle ahead of him. YesJulz says she is countersuing him after being terminated from his company.

As reported by XXL Magazine, the Miami, Fla. native has spoken out about her recent departure from YZY. On Friday, March 29 she took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to detail her version of the events that led to the professional split.

“I come here to speak my peace because i care only for my truth to be known amongst my personal supporters and audience- not clout or additional eyeballs” she wrote. The talent manager would go on to reveal before she took legal action she attempted to reach out to Ye to work things out but she was unsuccessful.

“By the way – i reached out to every mutual friend i could think of urging them to have @kanyewest call me so i wouldn’t have to move forward with a countersuit I assume everyone is too p**** to address him about this so this is my last attempt before i take action,” she said. YesJulz also took issue with Ye’s Chief of Staff Milo Yiannopoulos. “I gave everyone over a week to do the right thing and fire this pedo, pay me for my completed work and drop the nonsense intent to arbitrate. Even asked everyone in a text if this was real because the way Milo wrote it was so damn laughable.”

Last month, YesJulz was fired from YZY for reportedly violating the company’s nondisclosure agreement. “Fines incurred to date as a result of your NDA violations come to $7.7m. While you were a contractor, I suspended enforcement of this debt. It now falls due. Please note that any further violations will accrue more fines” an email from Milo to YesJulz read.

Ye has yet to comment on the matter.

Ludacris Talks Hosting 2024 iHeart Music Awards, Beyoncé’s Potential Appearance & His Thoughts on a Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake Battle

Ludacris is ready to tackle his next big role: hosting the iHeart Music Awards.

Tonight (Apr. 1), the multi-platform star will take centerstage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 8 PM EST on Fox. Justin Timberlake, TLC, Jelly Roll, Green Day and Luda himself will all dish out action-packed performances. There might even be a Beyoncé sighting, as the venerable legend will receive the Innovator Award.

For Ludacris, this will be his first time hosting the iHeart Music Awards — but he’s no stranger to the stage. Having previously hosted the Billboard Music Awards from 2016 to 2017, he’s fully aware of the audience he’ll be catering to, and he’s ready to bring the house down again with his comedic flair.

“You always gotta know your audience. It’s always different audiences for different events and things you do,” says Luda ahead of tonight’s festivities. “To me, iHeart is all about energy, love and they wanna see their favorite artists. I’m also — humbly speaking — performing as well. So, it’s all about the energy in the building. We gotta keep that as high as possible.”

Billboard spoke to Luda about Beyoncé’s possible appearance, the current feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, wanting to reprise his role of Darius on Law & Order: SVU, and more.

Trending on Billboard

Is the preparation process with hosting similar to when you’re preparing to perform at a concert or act on set?

It’s always [me] praying beforehand and thanking the man above for allowing me to do the things that I love and actually make a living off of it. That’s pretty much the preparation, man. Of course, you have rehearsals and you got things that you do beforehand — but besides that, it’s between you and the man upstairs.

Beyoncé is getting the Innovator Award. Luda, is she going to be there?

I hope so. Are you trying to say you think she’s going to have a pre-recorded video or something?

You never know.

You never know. [Laughs]. Listen, I’m sure iHeart is doing everything within their power [to bring her to the show.] She is an innovator. Her receiving that award and being risky with cross-genres and doing what she’s doing with her evolution over the last two decades has been amazing. I love where’s she at, I loved where she was and I love where she’s going.

You and Larenz Tate were in the studio teasing music. I asked you about four years ago, when was the album coming — I’m back again posing you that same question: Where and when is it coming?

You know what’s crazy? When you put out so many projects as an artist, you gotta step back a little and live a little bit of life to give the right injection again, because artistry pulls from real life. I just think I’ve been so fortunate to be one of those artists that can make it that far, when you have that many albums — but in order to properly give the fans what they need, I gotta take a step back for a second. Now that time has passed, it’s time for more music. Absolutely.

Last time we spoke, I asked you if you’ve embraced the word “legend” when speaking on your music career. Let’s flip it. Do you feel you’ve touched those grounds yet on the acting side? If not, what more do you have to do?

Acting, man, I feel like there’s more work to be done. You can put out music a lot sooner it seems than you can put out movies. Well, Samuel Jackson has debunked that, so I take that back completely.

To answer your question, I have so much more time to go before I can be considered a legend in acting. Now, some people my disagree. I’m a Virgo and I feel like I have to overly do and over-prove in order to solidify [my status to] the majority of the people around the world. I have some more time to go before I can be considered a legend in acting. I’ve accepted it in music. Since the last time we spoke, people don’t even throw that around loosely. They’ve definitely given me the love. I’ve appreciated that and I’ve accepted that.

You know, this marks Law and Order SVU’s 25th season. As we’ve previously discussed, your role of Darius got a lot of love and acclaim. Because your character walked away free from charges, can Darius possibly make a return this season?

You know, they haven’t reached out yet — but that goes into your last question of what I was saying. Your work has to stand the test of time. With now my music — in terms of being engrained in hip-hop until this day — they’re still playing it in arenas, like “Move,” “Area Codes” and “Southern Hospitality.” Your movies after a certain amount of time have to do the same thing. Same with your acting jobs. You see Hustle & Flow, I would consider that a cult, legendary film. You got Crash. I still feel like I need a couple more under my belt. But to answer your question, they haven’t reached out. I would love for Law & Order to do that, so we can reprise that role.

Obviously, the internet has been buzzing since Kendrick came after Drake and J. Cole on “Like That.” Being that you’ve had some competitive days, sparring with rappers on the mic, why do you think this battle is good for the culture?

Man, I’m excited. I’m not gonna lie to you. I think I’m just as excited as everyone else is, just to see how it plays out [and] to see if people are going to respond accordingly. Or all of that can be subjective. Do they feel like they need to?

I feel like that everyone should respond, because we’re in a competitive world. Athletes, March Madness, the Super Bowl that I just did was about the two best teams. Everyone’s talking about who’s the best, and everyone wants to say who’s the GOAT. Right now, I think people are like, “OK. You say you’re the best. Prove that because there can only be one.” It’s exciting. I can’t wait to see what happens.

Speaking on that competitive fire, how do you personally keep that streak alive knowing the resumé you have? Does it transfer over to the different arenas you’re in like acting and hosting?

That’s a good question. I think I just want to have numerous options and choices depending on how I feel. [Laughs.] If I wake up and say, “I wanna put out some music today,” I’ll put it out. If I wake up and say, “I wanna do a movie” — it’s all art. It’s all entertainment. If I wanna do something in television that’s ingrained in inspiring people, or if I wanna do some philanthropy today or if I wanna host something and uplift people, I like to have those options moving forward in life. I love the versatility and I love diversifying the portfolio to have those options.

Joe Budden Calls Drake’s Support of Sexxy Red Suspect, Says It’s For Cash

HipHopWired Featured Video

BET Hip Hop Awards 2023 - Show

Drake has been seen giving Sexxy Red a lot of gifts and public accolades – but Joe Budden isn’t so sure it’s genuine.

Drake has been spotted giving younger artists, primarily Sexxy Red a lot of support in recent months, calling her “my muse in this short and confusing life”.

The display has Joe Budden questioning the true motive behind it, even going so far as to suggest that Drake is getting financial compensation out of it. In the episode of his namesake podcast which last Thursday (March 28), Budden laid out his theory at the 2-hour mark of the show.

“Respectfully, it sound like a n*gga that could rap at that level that gets paid off of everybody’s deal tryna rap. That’s what it sound like to me. I’m not arguing with none of you n*ggas, I’m not trying to debate,” Budden said. That prompted a question from co-host Trevor “QueenzFlip” Robinson.

“Is this confirmed? Or is this just some inside sH*t that you sayin’?” Flip asked. “Oh, you think he just like being around Sexyy Red that much? I can name some more people.”

The comments caused a stir online, and Drake made it known that he got wind of the “Pump It Up” artist’s words in a highly public way. After his most recent It’s All a Blur Tour – Big As the What? concert tour stop, which was held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. over the weekend, Drake posted a photo of Budden to his Instagram Stories with one question: “WHAT’S THE VIBES NY?!”

That same show, he also used his song “Energy” to direct some smoke toward Kendrick Lamar in response to his blistering verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That”, exclaiming “Fuck these n*ggas,” at the end [view the video here].

Sexxy Red issued her response to Budden’s claim, writing “They so dumb,” while quoting a post of the clip of Budden’s remarks.

Drake’s support of the “SkeeYee” rapper has been lavish, as she displayed in a post on X, formerly Twitter at the beginning of March where she posed with two of four Chanel bags that he apparently got her (they were in pink, purple, burgundy and black) along with $50,000 in cash. “Rich baby daddy gang, 50K n 4 Chanels fa a bad Bthc, Thank You Drake,” she wrote with heart and a kiss emojis.

Frank Ocean’s ‘Lost’ Hits 1 Billion Spotify Streams

Frank Ocean‘s 2012 track “Lost” has found a new accomplishment 12 years after its release: It recently hit 1 billion streams on Spotify.

This marks Ocean’s third song to reach this milestone, following Calvin Harris‘ “Slide,” also featuring Migos, and “Pink + White.” “Lost” was the fourth single from his debut studio album Channel Orange, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It also won the Grammy for best urban contemporary album at the 2013 awards show, where it was also nominated for album of the year when Ocean was up for best new artist.

“Lost” found new success on the Billboard charts two years ago thanks to a viral TikTok dance challenge. The song reached No. 25 on Hot R&B Songs in 2013 and didn’t appear on any all-genre charts at the time, but it debuted at No. 39 on the all-genre Streaming Songs survey in January 2022 (and later reached a No. 23 peak) and hit No. 10 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs, No. 3 on R&B Streaming Songs and No. 2 on R&B Digital Song Sales in February 2022.

Ocean, who headlined the first weekend of Coachella last year but dropped out the second weekend, hasn’t dropped an album since his 2016 magnum opus Blonde. Blonde earned the elusive artist his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. Since then, he has occasionally dropped singles like 2017’s “Chanel,” “Biking,” “Lens” and “Provider”; 2018’s “Moon River”; 2019’s “DHL” and “In My Room”; and 2020’s “Cayendo” and “Dear April.”

Eminem Pranks Fans With April Fools’ Day Album Announcement

It’s been four years since Eminem’s last LP, and he pranked fans with an album announcement trailer to celebrate April Fools’ Day. Slim Shady dropped a trailer on Monday (April 1) initially soundtracked by “Crack A Bottle” and filled with fan comments pleading with him to drop his next album.

Unfortunately, the Detroit legend leaned into April Fools’ Day and took it back to his overlooked Infinite debut album in 1996, which never touched the Billboard 200 charts.

“The highly-anticipated next studio album goes back to where it all started. Infinite but now it’s even more infinite,” a cinematic narrator said in the clip filled with explosive drops. “Out today.”

Trending on Billboard

However, not all hope is lost for an Eminem album, as Dr. Dre revealed that Em is planning to drop an album later this year.

“Let me tell you something, let me explain something to you right now: Eminem is working on his own album which is coming out this year,” Dre said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last month. “And I actually talked to him and he said it okay for me to make that announcement right here on this show. So he has an album coming out, I’ve got songs on it and it’s fire. I’m actually gonna hear the entire album for the first time for tomorrow.”

The West Coast legend continued: “[Eminem] holds his music close to his chest so I haven’t heard everything. I haven’t even heard everything complete that I’ve done, but I’m gonna hear it, and he’s putting out an album this year.”

Eminem’s untitled 12th studio album will serve as the follow-up to 2020’s Music to Be Murdered By, which was a surprise release in January of that year and debuted atop the Billboard 200. The LP featured guest appearances from Ed Sheeran, Juice WRLD, Q-Tip, Anderson .Paak and more.

A History of Disses at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, From ‘You’re So Vain’ to ‘Like That’

With the shots fired by Kendrick Lamar on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” helping the song debut atop the Hot 100, a rundown of all its spite-filled predecessors at the chart’s apex.

It has been a fiery start to 2024 atop the Billboard charts. Barely a month after Megan Thee Stallion’s incendiary “Hiss” rattled its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar‘s “Like That” becomes the latest missive to burn up the chart.

“Like That” debuts atop the listing this week, with the highest single-week stream mark of 2024 thus far — thanks, in large part, to the social media cyclone kicked up by Lamar’s guest verse on the track. During his appearance, the rap superstar takes thinly veiled shots at the two other icons of 2010s hip-hop most frequently mentioned in conversation as his peers (Drake and J. Cole) by dismissing any talk of a “Big Three” and proclaiming, “it’s just Big Me.” The toughest-talking bars are saved for Drake in particular, with Lamar taking aim at his pup-themed latest LP: “‘Fore all your dogs gettin’ buried/ That’s a K with all these nines, he gon’ see Pet Sematary.”

“Like That” might very well be a new standard-setter for virulence atop the Hot 100, but it’s far from the first dis track to lay claim to the chart’s apex. Going back to the ’70s, hit singles have blazed a path to No. 1 by scorching the earth below them, with their IRL lyrical targets ranging from industry rivals to dishonest politicians to (of course) scheming exes. Here is a quick history of disses — a distory, if you will — at the top of Billboard‘s signature songs chart.

Bun B’s Trill Burgers Named in New Lawsuit From Ex-Business Partners

HipHopWired Featured Video

Trill Burgers

Bun B has the hottest thing coming out of Houston since “Still Tippin’” in his wildly popular Trill Burgers. But now, it seems like Bun B’s baby is at the center of a court case with several allegations being thrown around.

According to Chron, Bun B and his ex-associates and co-founders of Trill Burgers, Patsy, and Benson Vivares, are duking it out in a court of law as both sides are accusing each other of theft.

In 2023 Bun B, Andy Nguyen, and Nick Scurfield filed a lawsuit against the Vivares brothers alleging that the two had stolen $45,000 from the company’s coffers. Turning the tables on Bun B and company, Patsy, and Benson filed a counter lawsuit in which they claim that Bun B, Nguyen, and Scurfield not only stole their smash burger idea but also the original recipe, which led to Trill Burgers being crowned the best burger in America.

Represented by Saad Aziz and Walter “Web” Beard of Aziz and Beard Trial Law, the Vivareses are claiming that they linked up with Andy Nguyen in 2021 when they were looking for a new menu item to add to their Sticky’s Chicken restaurant menu.

Chron reports:

“[The Vivareses] spent a lot of time and energy developing the recipe,” Aziz said. “They are the ones who kind of came up with the specifics of the smashburger … now called the OG Trill Burger.”

According to the counterclaims made by the Vivareses, the siblings and Nguyen in July 2021 connected and partnered with Bun B, who had known Nguyen since 2010 and was said to be a fan of Sticky’s Chicken. At the time, Bun B was approached by the Vivareses through a meeting facilitated by Nguyen and Nick Scurfield, founder of the public relations firm Scurfield Group who at the time listed Sticky’s Chicken as a client. According to court documents, the initial meeting was set up to test the rapper’s interest in “being involved with the promotion” of the burger.

A partnership over the smashburger concept was confirmed on July 22, with each partner assuming a percentage of ownership, according to court documents. An email sent to each partner outlined the partnership, indicating that the Vivareses and Nguyen together would retain a 50 percent share, Bun B would have 40 percent, and Scurfield would retain the remaining 10 percent. It is unclear how ownership was split between Nguyen and the Vivareses, though court documents claim that the Vivareses are entitled to 33.4 percent. By Jan. 4 , 2022, a limited liability company was established for Trill Burgers.

Damn! We thought this was Bun B’s secret recipe, but the Vivares are claiming that it’s theirs. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in court and who came up with the recipe that put Trill Burgers on the map.

Still, the Trill Burger made its debut in February of 2022 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and was a massive hit. The Vivares brothers ran the pop-up themselves and cooked thousands of burgers that day bringing in quite the haul.

As for the $45,000 that Bun B’s team claimed was stolen by the Vivareses, the brothers admitted in texts to “misappropriating” the money but said that all the partners were aware that they would use the profits from the pop-up to pay off Sticky’s mounting debts.

The Vivareses are seeking $1 million from Bun B, Scurfield, Nguyen, and Trill Burgers, LLC, saying they not only stole their recipe for Trill Burgers but also poached their chef, Mike Pham, in the process.

What do y’all think of the drama surrounding Trill Burgers? Let us know in the comments section below.

R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: Beyoncé & Shaboozey, Doechii & JT, Tyrese and More

When Beyoncé drops, the world stops and listens. And that’s exactly what happened with the release of her incredibly ambitious 27-track Cowboy Carter LP last weekend (March 29). While the record is framed by Queen Bey’s exploration of the Black roots of country music and her own Southern familial roots across Texas, Louisiana and Alabama, there are still healthy doses of the R&B we all know and love from her, courtesy of collaborators ranging from Pharrell Williams and Raphael Saadiq to The-Dream and Nile Rodgers.

Remarkably, a couple of artists across hip-hop and R&B were able to cut through the Cowboy Carter chokehold. Ye (fka Kanye West) predictably inserted himself in the DrakeKendrick Lamar back-and-forth, claiming that “there is only one GOAT” and that he “washed” both artists on previous collaborations. Tyla, who is currently enjoying the release of her debut studio album, covered the most recent Billboard print issue and revealed why pulling out of Coachella was “the right decision.” Of course, the Head Barb herself, Nicki Minaj, stayed in the news cycle with the announcement of her first sneaker collection, a winning performance at Madison Square Garden and an appearance at the Knicks game with her family (March 31).

With Fresh PicksBillboard aims to highlight some of the best and most interesting new sounds across R&B and hip-hop — from Beyoné and Shaboozey’s genre-obliterating shootout to Felix Ames’ soulful new single. Be sure to check out this week’s Fresh Picks in our Spotify playlist below.

Freshest Find: Tyrese, “I Would Still Say I Do”

A sweeping eight-minute tribute to the longevity of matrimony, Tyrese‘s “I Would Still Say I Do” is also a tender love letter to tasteful, old-school soul. The “Sweet Lady” singer has been teasing this track on his official Instagram account — where he’s also been subtly documenting the creation of his forthcoming seventh studio album — and it was absolutely worth the wait. Stirring strings and lush piano serve as the anchors for an arrangement that swells into a mini-orchestra, incorporating bits of jazz along the way. “How foolish would it be/ betting it all after losing everything/ And nothing here makes sense/ Love is worth whatever the consequence,” he croons in a tone that expertly balances yearning with true devotion. The subject matter is reminiscent of “I Still Do” from 2015’s Black Rose, but with even more finesse and gravitas.

Beyoncé, Linda Martell & Shaboozey, “SPAGHETTII”

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?/ Yes, they are,” country pioneer Linda Martell chuckles at the beginning of “Spaghetti,” a high-camp Western shootout soundtrack housed on Beyoncé’s latest opus, Cowboy Carter. Here, Beyoncé acts as a bridge between country’s past (Martell) and a fearlessly innovative future that ropes in notes of Southern hip-hop, by way of herself and ascendant country star Shaboozey.

With a rap verse that bears the unmistakable dual fingerprints of both Jay-Z and The Harder They Fall‘s soundtrack, Queen Bey asserts power and dominance over everything in her path. In the context of the album, “Spaghettii” is a smart sonic juxtaposition and a thematic complement to its preceding track, which finds Bey carrying out a murder fantasy — the “I ain’t in no gang, but I got shooters and I bang-bang!” lyric is the bridge between the two — while combining the sounds of country and classical music. Oh, did we mention that she’s also doing all of this over a Brazilian funk sample?

Doechii with JT, “Alter Ego”

An Ayesha Erotica sample + a Tampa-Miami link-up + an Azealia Banks-esque flow = a bop. The equation really is that simple. Are the “Show Me Love”-esque synths a bit predictable? Yes, but that doesn’t mean they’re still not a worthy addition to the song. On “Alter Ego,” Doechii and JT join forces for yet another bad bitch anthem, but with one foot in the world of house music and the other dipping its toes in histrionic Miami Bass-laden hyperpop, the track sounds fresh, even if its subject matter is far from it. Although “Alter Ego” is less immediately accessible than “What It Is,” it’s still a winning showcase of both ladies’ verve and personality. “Fuck these n—as and these b–ches/ I come through and it be crickets/ I come through and moods be switchin’/ I’m the problem, I’m the villain,” JT spits.

Felix Ames, “Mr. Weatherman”

As the Milwaukee hip-hop scene continues to bask in its moment in the national limelight, Felix Ames is holding down the city’s soul scene. With “Mr. Weatherman” — which serves as the lead single for the forthcoming deluxe version of JENA, his 2023 debut LP — he sings of both life’s more aimless moments and the search for reassurance and comfort that there truly is a light at the end of the tunnel. “I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m going fast,” he croons before begging, “Mr. Weatherman, tell me something better.” For New Yorkers, those lyrics will feel particularly impactful given spring’s reluctance to stick around for more than two days at a time. For everyone, “Mr. Weatherman” evokes consolation the world is craving in the face of times that are as tumultuous as they are unprecedented.

Machine Gun Kelly & Trippie Redd, “Beauty”

With this new track, Machine Gun Kelly and Trippie Redd try to navigate finding “beauty” in the breakdown. The Ohio-bred duo returned to bring the emo raps for their genre : sadboy joint project and track two is an early standout from the 10-song project. Built around a pitched-up Frou Frou “Let Go” sample, MGK does most of the heavy lifting on the hook and his numbing verse, while touching on substance abuse, addiction and depression. “21 days clean that won’t break a habit/ 22 days later, I’m a f—-g addict/ Lost a real one, so I went and got him tatted/ Can’t eat, can’t sleep, life doesn’t matter,” he raps. MGK and Tripp join forces looking inward to face their demons and turn those harrowing experiences into cathartic art.

DJ Premier & Snoop Dogg, “Can U Dig That?”

Inject this into hip-hop purists’ veins. DJ Premier’s signature scratches mixed with Snoop Dogg’s West Coast style make for a laid-back boom-bap rap cocktail here. It’s a sight to behold when a pair of the genre’s dignitaries are still raising the bar three decades into their Hall of Fame careers. “We been doing this s–t, mane, ’bout 25, 26/ S–t, I don’t know, we just been doing it,” Snoop reflects on his lengthy relationship with Preemo, in what’s typically been a young person’s sport. The Doggfather ashes his joint while cruising in his low-rider, and takes a second to show love to Cali peers who also changed the game, like 2Pac, E-40, Ice Cube and Eazy-E. Unfortunately, “Can U Dig That?” appears to be a one-off rather than the lead into a collab project from Snoop and Preemo.
