Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Songwriting Credits: Here’s Who Wrote Each Song

So long disco balls and platform shoes, hello square dancing and cowboy boots. Beyoncé officially ushered in a new era with the Friday, March 29 release of Cowboy Carter, her eighth album and a changing of the guard following 2022’s critically acclaimed Renaissance.

Born out of an experience Bey had “years ago where [she] did not feel welcomed,” Cowboy Carter finds the superstar embracing the musical roots of her Southern heritage while paying homage to many of the country greats who came before her — from Willie Nelson to Linda Martell, each of whom recorded voice messages introducing different genre-warping tracks on the album. The project also includes a reinvigorated, Beyoncé-fied version of Dolly Parton‘s “Jolene,” preceded by an interlude recorded by the icon herself.

The LP also sees the Houston native uplifting modern country stars, with Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts (all Black women in country) joining her for a poignant cover of The Beatles‘ “Blackbird,” while Shaboozey and Willie Jones add their own flavor to “Spaghettii” and “Just for Fun,” respectively. Plus, Miley Cyrus blends her voice with Bey’s on the heartfelt “II Most Wanted,” and Post Malone doubles the Texas representation on “Levii’s Jeans.”

The Cowboy Carter tapestry also includes by fascinating samples and interpolations. Case in point? Nancy Sinatra‘s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” and the Beach Boys‘ “Good Vibrations” are somehow both seamlessly fused into just one track, “Ya Ya.”

See which songwriters Beyoncé collaborated with on each of the 27 tracks on Cowboy Carter below, per Parkwood Entertainment/Columbia.

Taylor Swift’s Songwriting and Production Analyzed: 13 Secrets to Her Chart Success

“The ideas are my favorite part of everything I do. That moment where you’re like, ‘Oh, I know what it’s called,’ or ‘I know what the hook is now.’ ”

Taylor Swift mused about her creative process upon the release of her 2020 documentary, Miss Americana.

“I remember when I used to get an idea when I was 12 years old in my room,” Swift continued. “I used to get an idea and I’d be like, ‘Yes, idea!’ And then I’d get this fear and almost sorrow that no one was ever going to hear it. ‘I’m never going to get to make this into something. It’s just mine.’

“There’s something cute about that … ‘but I want to make something.’ ”

Swift has tallied 232 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including 138 top 40 entries and 49 top 10s (all of which she has written or co-written, and the bulk of which she has co-produced) – all the most among women in the chart’s history (through the survey dated April 6, 2024). Of those, 11 have hit No. 1.

After arriving on the Hot 100 dated Sept, 23, 2006 with her debut single, “Tim McGraw,” Swift first reached the top 10 on the chart dated Aug. 30, 2008, with “Change”; five weeks later, she returned to the region with “Love Story,” with both songs from her sophomore album, Fearless. In 2022, she became the first artist to infuse the Hot 100’s entire top 10 in a single week with 10 tracks from her most recent album of all original material, Midnights.

How has Swift’s songwriting and production evolved over the decade-and-a-half-plus since she first hit the Hot 100’s top 10? What stands out as unique in her craft? And, what techniques has she employed that have helped make her The Eras Tour groundbreaking?

Hit Songs Deconstructed, which provides compositional analytics for top 10 Hot 100 hits, recently held a masterclass, studying Swift’s top 10s from Fearless through Midnights, followed by the April 2 release of its complimentary 93-page report, “The Taylor Swift Evolution.”

Via insights from David Penn, who co-founded Hit Songs Deconstructed with Yael Penn, here is a look at 13 secrets to Swift’s historic Hot 100 success.

Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo Legally Spar Over Neptunes Name Rights

HipHopWired Featured Video

Songwriters Hall of Fame 51st Annual Induction and Awards Gala

Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, collectively known as the Neptunes, are currently in court over the rights to the group’s name. In the court claims, Chad Hugo states that Pharrell Williams is fraudulently attempting to control the Neptunes trademarks for personal gain.

Billboard reports that Hugo, 50, and Williams, also 50, are embroiled in a legal tussle over the Neptunes name rights after Hugo and his attorneys filed a claim that Williams is seeking to register trademarks for the band’s name. According to Hugo’s side, this violates an agreement the pair made to split all things related to the group name equally.

From Billboard:

“Throughout their over thirty year history, [Hugo] and Williams agreed to, and in fact, have divided all assets,” wrote Hugo’s attorney Kenneth D. Freundlich, a prominent music industry litigator. “By ignoring and excluding [Hugo] from the any and all applications filed by applicant for the mark ‘The Neptunes,’ applicant has committed fraud in securing the trademarks and acted in bad faith.”

Via a representative, Williams offered a statement to Billboard explaining that the move was not to squeeze out Hugo but instead to make certain no other parties could lay claim to the name.

“Pharrell is surprised by this. We have reached out on multiple occasions to share in the ownership and administration of the trademark and will continue to make that offer. The goal here was to make sure a third party doesn’t get a hold of the trademark and to guarantee Chad and Pharrell share in ownership and administration,” read the statement.

Freundlich countered the statement by writing, “If Pharrell’s intent was to include Chad in the filing, he should have registered it in the name of them jointly or as a partnership and not in his own name.”

The Neptunes have been responsible for a bevy of hit songs, producing smashes for the likes of The Clipse, Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Justin Timberlake, and others.

20 Musicians Who Have Appeared in ‘American Horror Story’

From Lady Gaga to Rick Springfield, here are the artists who have had roles on the creepy drama.

American Horror Story kicked off in 2011 on FX with a creepy, crawly opening sequence perfect for the horror anthology. Some viewers immediately clocked similarities between its vibe, sound and look to Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 sepia-toned music video for Billboard Hot 100 hit “Closer” — and as it turned out, there was a connection.

The Ryan Murphy- and Brad Falchuk-created show had tapped former NIN keyboardist Charlie Clouser – who had since gone on to become a producer and composer, working on TV and film scores – to rework César Dávila-Irizarry’s 1998 creation, now AHS’ iconic theme song.

But that’s not where American Horror Story’s musical connections end. While Clouser was behind the scenes, many musicians have appeared on the screen. Sure, staple stars over the show’s 12-and-counting seasons — such as Evan Peters, Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson — are actors who have appeared as various characters across multiple seasons. But the award-winning FX show has also featured music makers in everything from blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos to starring roles.

The most notable so far has been Lady Gaga, who played the undead Countess in Hotel, a starring role that earned her rave reviews and awards. And who could forget Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, who not only appeared as herself, but also performed some of the band’s hits on the show? As for the cameos, ‘80s heartthrob Rick Springfield also had a memorable role in one episode of Cult.

Then there are the AHS actors who have also either dabbled in or have a side gig in music. For example, both Connie Britton and Emma Roberts have scored entries on the Billboard charts.

Read on to learn about 20 of American Horror Story’s stars who also have musical careers both big and smaller, as well as the roles they played across the horror series’ dozen seasons.

Eric Church on New Whiskey JYPSI Release, Upcoming Nashville Residency: ‘It Was Important to Us That We Could Be Creative’

As CMA entertainer of the year winner, 10-time Grammy nominee and whiskey enthusiast Eric Church has grown his varied business empire to include being a co-owner of the Field & Stream brand, launching his own SiriusXM music channel, “Eric Church Outsiders Radio,” rolling out the drinks line Whiskey JYPSI and his upcoming six-story venue Chief’s in downtown Nashville. Infusing his personal brand into every part of these ventures has been just as critical as it has been in his music.

For some artists, putting out a whiskey might involve little more than slapping their name on a bottle—but Church has never been most artists. His name doesn’t appear on a bottle of Whiskey JYPSI, yet he’s been intimately involved in crafting its feel and flavor.

Trending on Billboard

“It’s not a celebrity whiskey,” Church says of Whiskey JYPSI to Billboard via email. “I’m a whiskey and bourbon connoisseur. It’s what I enjoy. I have my whole life and Whiskey JYPSI was built to produce a unique and high-quality product. It’s a true partnership and I happen to be a creative and that’s how I contribute the most.”

In 2020, Church joined forces with Raj Alva to launch Outsiders Spirits, an incubator for whiskey creativity. On April 2, the new Whiskey JYPSI Explorer Series launches, with the first release from the series boasting a blend of two six-year-old bourbons: a Kentucky-distilled low rye, as well as an Indiana high rye. The new offering follows the inaugural Whiskey JYPSI Legacy Batch 001, which released in 2023.

“We created this – Raj, Ari and I – it was important to us that we could be creative; to have creativity not just at the start, but through the whole process,” Church says. “We’re able to look around the world and find unique ingredients – like our initial Explorer release is finished with wood from the Appalachian Forrest in North Carolina, where I am from, and Legacy 001 had Canadian Rye that was very unique to its location. By finding unique ingredients and making smaller batches, you can super serve the product and get highly creative with the flavors. That’s what makes Whiskey JYPSI different as a brand.”

Church’s imprint is also on every inch of his upcoming venue Chief’s. The 20,000-square-foot establishment at 200 Broadway in downtown Nashville celebrates its grand opening on April 5, and not only features Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ on the rooftop, but a two-story, approximately 350-capacity live music venue called The Neon Steeple.

The Neon Steeple is set to feature upcoming performances from not only the “Chief” himself, but Ray Wylie Hubbard, songwriter Casey Beathard, Jim Lauderdale, Sunny Sweeney, Suzy Bogguss and Radney Foster. Church has been very hands-on in selecting performers for the venue, with some artists in the inaugural batch of performers having ties to Church’s own music. In 2019, Church’s music video for “Desperate Man” featured the song’s co-writer Wylie Hubbard. Beathard has co-written several of Church’s hits including “The Outsiders” and “Homeboy.”

“I have a vision for it – there is a troubadour element, there is a songwriter element, and that will evolve over time like anything else but that has been the fabric of how we want to activate the first year,” Church says. “I’m excited to do my shows and we will have other artists that people will recognize. For a lot of artists, it will be an underplay, and for others it will be a perfect place to play Nashville.”

Also originating April 5, Church will launch the 19-show “To Beat the Devil” residency at Chief’s—one that promises a wellspring of creativity and intimacy with his ardent fanbase.

“Very rarely do I get to walk out with a guitar in a living room setting,” says Church, who notes that it is likely that attendees will see some surprise guests show up at various shows during the residency. “It’s very rare that you get to go out and have a conversation like that. It allows me to turn the show into a full musical piece and not just playing songs. It was conceived that way. I have most of it sketched out and I can’t wait to do it.”

In August 2023, Church performed two nights as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s artist-in-residence program, offering up a two-hour, 19-song set that included both Church’s radio hits as well as rarely-heard live renditions. The set was somewhat of a precursor to the unique nights of music he has planned for the Chief’s residency.

“It will be a lot of unique, new music that pertains to different times in my career; stuff that I wrote and maybe didn’t make an album or a story that nobody’s ever heard,” Church says. “That’s part of the reason we are going restrict cell phone use. That’s the only way people can truly be in the moment and experience the moment. As a parent, I understand the challenges of people being away from their cell phone though, so we are going to use Yondr [a pouch system that allows concertgoers to lock away their phones], which allows you access to your phone by stepping outside if you need to – which is important to me. But there will be no recording. What happens there is for the people that fought so hard to get tickets, and they get to talk about it,” Church says.

“It will be a completely unique show and one of the more challenging and special ones of my career.”

‘American Idol’ Drama: Ziggy and Mackenzie Sol Enter Sing-Off For Spot In Top 24

American Idol loves a bit of drama. Hollywood is a drama factory. Match it up, and Sunday night’s Hollywood Week episode of Idol delivered so much of the stuff you could chew on it.

Ziggy, the so-called Dutch pop prince, has gone full diva during this 22th season, sporting colorful, custom suits with matching candy-colored hair. Ziggy isn’t just testing his talents, he’s keen to make his old man proud; the rocker passed away before the season began, before getting the chance to see Ziggy shine in the U.S. singing competition.

Mackenzie Sol, a Las Vegas-based TikTok content creator known for his prank videos, has sailed through to LaLa Land, and made fans along the way.

With a spot in the final 24, the drama intensified. Ziggy (real name: Ziggy Krassenberg) went first with “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman. Sol followed up with a performance of The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends”.

The judges couldn’t separate them, so a challenge was set: a sing-off to “Jealous” by Labrinth or Harry Styles’ “Falling,” with just one hour to prepare. “Jealous” it was. Drama.

Neither singer was happy about the scenario. Nerves were shredded. “I don’t like the fact I’ve got to sing against him, he’s incredible,” remarked Sol backstage.

Trending on Billboard

A crestfallen Ziggy took his concerns to another level. “This is just insane,” he stated. Sol is “such a good singer, such a pure soul.”

At one point, Ziggy was so freaked out, he stepped into Sol’s rehearsal space and asked him to stop singing. “I am so nervous and you’re making me really nervous,” was the explanation. More drama.

If Ziggy was mortified, he had right to be. Sol, we learned, isn’t just familiar with the song, he used to sing it with his ex, to whom he assured he’d never sing it again if they broke up. “Why not use that pain and sing it for the last time ever,” Katy Perry remarked.

The youngsters took their turn to belt it out. “They both are really good,” Perry later remarked. Good, however, isn’t enough for one competitor.

Perry, speaking on behalf of the three judges, praised Sol’s energy that is “a little unbridled.” Ziggy “you should be so proud because you were so pure and honest,” she enthused. “It’s going to take you to the highest of heights.”

Not in this competition.

Sol shone bright enough to secure a spot in the top 24, and progress to filming at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa in Ko Olina in Hawaiʻi.

Taylor Swift, SZA, Peso Pluma and More Record-Setters at 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Taylor Swift won artist of the year at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards, which were presented on Monday (April 1) at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. (Here’s the full list of winners.) Swift previously won the award in 2015. In 2016 and 2018, Swift won female artist of the year, before the iHearts moved to gender-neutral categories for good last year.

Swift, who accepted her awards with a video message, won a total of six awards on the night, matching her haul from last year, when she set a new record for the most wins in one night by a female artist. Drake is the overall single-night leader. He won seven awards in 2017.

Swift’s five other awards are pop artist of the year, tour of the year for The Eras Tour and in three socially-voted categories — favorite tour style, best lyrics for “Is It Over Now?” and TikTok bop of the year for “Cruel Summer.” These six awards extend her lead as the artist with the most iHeartRadio Awards. She now has 25.

This is Swift’s fourth win for best lyrics. She had previously won for “Anti-Hero,” “All Too Well” and “Blank Space.” Many regard Swift as the premier songwriter of her generation. She has amassed seven Grammy nominations for song of the year, more than anyone else in history (though oddly she has yet to win in that category).

SZA and Peso Pluma each won four awards on the night, sweeping all available awards in their home genres, R&B and Regional Mexican, respectively. Jelly Roll, Morgan Wallen, Karol G and Jung Kook each won two awards.

Since Swift’s wins were so expected, here’s a closer look at seven other artists who set records at the 2024 iHearts.

Ye and Ty Dolla $ign Scrap ‘Vultures’ Listening Parties

Ye – formerly known as Kanye West – and Ty Dolla $ign have nixed Vultures listening parties that were slated to be staged in multiple U.S. arenas later this month, Billboard can confirm.

The listening parties were dubbed “Vultures 1 & 2 Listening Experience,” but notably, the Vultures 2 album, which was originally announced for release on March 8, about one month after the release of Vultures 1, still hasn’t materialized.

There’s still no word or sign of Vultures 2, and, now, those listening parties have gone quiet. A spokesperson for Ye tells Billboard those playbacks will no longer go ahead, but is confident new replacement dates will be announced shortly. No explanation has been given for the change of plan.

Trending on Billboard

At the time of writing, Kanye and Ty are still holding a listening party at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt on April 21, with tickets on sale here

The listening sessions were quietly announced, and largely overlooked by the mainstream media.

Evidence of those shows can spotted, however, at Ticketmaster which hosts a page for the Washington D.C. “experience,” with a broken link.

A statement from Amelie Arena in Tampa, FL reads, “We regret to report that due to the time constraints for Ye and Ty Dolla $ign to curate production and meet logistic requirements, the upcoming dates for the VULTURES 1&2 listening experience will need to be revisited at a later date.” Amelie Arena was scheduled to host the playback on April 14.

Variety’s Chris Willman was first to report the canceled U.S. playbacks, which were also penciled-in for venues in Fort Lauderdale, FL; Pittsburgh, PA; Nashville, TN; and Charlotte, NC.

The delayed Vultures 1 project enjoyed a fast start around the globe when it finally dropped, including a back-to-back stint at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in February, for Ye’s eighth consecutive No. 1 album dating all the way back to 2005’s Late Registration.

That two-week stint at the summit for Vultures 1 marked the first time West held the top spot for more than a week since 2011’s collaborative album with Jay-Z, Watch The Throne. The latest LP also topped Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart and opened at No. 2 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.

A handful of listening parties built the buzz for Vultures 1, and the hip-hop pair would appear on stage at Rolling Loud California on March 14, for a performance that divided audiences as either a spectacle of high-art or next-level trolling.
