Warner Music Won’t Bid for Believe After All

Warner Music Group announced over the weekend that it has called off plans to submit a binding offer to acquire French music company Believe. The label did not elaborate on its decision, only that it was made “after careful consideration.”

Believe followed up in a statement, saying it will “review the situation with all interested parties (including the consortium) to determine next steps in relation to the possible evolution of the company’s control.”

The shift arrives less than two weeks after Believe’s board of directors gave WMG the green light — and access to financial data — to make a formal bid for the company, which owns digital distributor TuneCore, publishing administration service Sentric and a stable of record labels including Naïve, Nuclear Blast and Groove Attack.

WMG said earlier that it approached Believe in February with a non-binding offer to combine the two companies at a price of “at least” 17 euros ($18.60) per share. Believe then gave WMG until Sunday, April 7 to “submit a binding, unconditional and fully financed offer.” Warner dropped out a day before the deadline.

Trending on Billboard

Warner argued in March that its offer was more attractive than a rival takeover bid from Believe founder and CEO Denis Ladegaillerie and a consortium of shareholders, which had offered 15 euros per share and was backed by the board of directors.

Upon learning of WMG’s interest in Believe, the consortium tried to speed up the acquisition process by waiving a condition that the board’s ad hoc committee receive an independent expert report into the financial fairness of their offer. A review by the French financial regulatory body, Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), stated the group could not waive this condition.

Morgan Wallen Arrested on Felony Charges After Allegedly Throwing Chair From Roof of Nashville Bar

Morgan Wallen was arrested and jailed on Sunday night (April 7) in Nashville after the chart-topping country singer allegedly hurled a chair off the six-story roof of a popular bar on the city’s bustling Broadway street.

On Monday morning (April 8), Billboard received a statement from Wallen’s attorney, Worrick Robinson of Worrick Robinson Law, confirming the arrest. “At 10:53p Sunday evening Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He is cooperating fully with authorities,” it read; at press time a spokesperson for Wallen, 30, confirmed that the singer had been released from jail.

According to WSMV, an arrest warrant revealed that Wallen was on the sixth story roof of Eric Church’s Chief’s Bar on Sunday night around 10:45 p.m. when witnesses said he picked up a chair and threw it over the roof. Two Metro Nashville Police Department officers were reportedly standing below on Broadway when the affidavit said the chair landed just three feet from them. Officers reportedly spoke with bar staff and witnesses and reviewed security footage to confirm Wallen’s alleged action. The incident took place during the opening weekend of Church’s bar.

According to WKRN, witnesses reportedly told officers that they were standing next to Wallen and saw him “pick up the chair, throw it over him, laughing afterward.”

Wallen was arrested and booked just after midnight and charged with three felony counts of reckless endangerment and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, posting a $15,250 bond to secure his release around 3:30 a.m. The incident came just days after Wallen kicked off his 2024 One Night at a Time tour. The singer’s next court date in the incident is May 3rd; he is slated to play Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on May 2nd and 3rd.

GEMA Reports Record Results, Revenue Up 8.4%

GEMA’s revenue rose 8.4% in 2023, to €1.28 billion ($1.4 billion), the German collective management society (CMO) announced April 8, and for the second year in a row it will distribute more than a billion Euros to its members – €1.08 billion ($1.17 billion) to be exact. That income was offset by an expense ratio of 15.2%, up from 14.3% last year at a time of relatively high inflation of 5.9% in Germany.

“2023 will go down as the most successful financial year in GEMA’s history to date,” GEMA CEO Tobias Holzmüller said in a statement. “Despite the tense economic circumstances, we have worked to minimize costs and once again increased distributable funds. This sends an important message to our now 94,000 members: You can rely on your GEMA.”

GEMA is the first of the major European CMOs to announce its 2023 results, and they could be a sign that the growth of the last two years is starting to slow. CMO revenue growth over the long term has been fueled by the success of streaming, as well as competition in most big markets, but it got a big boost in 2021 and especially 2022 as the concert business returned in the wake of COVID. Last year, GEMA revenue grew 13%, SACEM was up 34%, and PRS For Music 23%. (It is difficult to make meaningful comparisons between CMOs, since their results include different forms of income and are calculated using different accounting methods and in some cases different currencies.) PRS, the U.K. CMO, is expected to report its results in a month or so, while SACEM usually does so a bit later in the year.

Trending on Billboard

GEMA’s largest source of income was public performance, which rose 24% to €444 million ($480 million). After that comes radio and television, down 6.2% to €304.8 million ($329.7 million); online, up 3% to €310.3 million ($335.7 million); statutory compensation, which consists of levies on blank media, including computers and tablets and the settlement of legal disputes, up 26.2% to €73.2 million ($79.2 million); and mechanical royalties on physical media, down 18.4% to €44.7 million ($48.4 million). (These currency conversions were calculated using the average Euros-to-dollars exchange rate for 2023, which was 1.082, which happens to be the rate as of April 8 as well.)

The leader at the midweek stage, “Texas Hold ‘Em” (via Columbia/Parkwood Ent) lifts 3-1 for its fifth non-consecutive week at the summit. It’s one of three album tracks impacting the U.K. top 10 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published Friday, April 5 — a career-best result for Bey — as “Jolene” bows at No. 8 and “II Most Wanted” with Miley Cyrus opens its account at No. 9.

Previously, Beyonce managed two simultaneous top 10 entries on two separate occasions – in 2008 with “If I Were A Boy” and “Listen” and in 2009 with “If I Were A Boy” and “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” the Official Charts Company reports. Across her career, Bey has now accumulated 23 U.K. top 10 singles.

As reported earlier, Cowboy Carter is a history-making No. 1 on the national albums tally, and Bey’s fifth solo leader.

Beyoncé previously managed two simultaneous U.K. top 10 entries on two separate occasions – in 2008 with “If I Were A Boy” and “Listen,” and again in 2009 with “If I Were A Boy” and “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).”

Meanwhile, Hozier’s “Too Sweet” (Island) enjoys a sugar rush, improving 8-4 for a new high. That’s the Irish singer and songwriter’s highest-charting single since his signature song “Take Me To Church” hit No. 2 in 2015.

British singer, songwriter and producer Artemas snags his first U.K. top 10 single with “I Like The Way You Kiss Me.” The viral number improves 13-6.

And finally, Benson Boone enjoys a third U.K. top 40 appearance with “Slow It Down” (Warner Records), up 42-27. It’s the followup to the Washington singer and songwriter’s No. 1 hit “Beautiful Things.”

Beyoncé Rides to U.K. Chart Double, Sets Records

Beyoncé scores the U.K. chart double with Cowboy Carter and “Texas Hold ‘Em,” and, in doing so, carves out a slice of history.

According to the Official Charts Company, Bey becomes the first Black artist to snag a No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart with a country record, and the first artist to simultaneously top both the U.K.’s singles and albums charts with country repertoire.

The result was never in any doubt. Cowboy Carter (via Columbia/Parkwood Entertainment) debuts at No. 1 on the tally, published Friday, April 5, having dominated the midweek chart, when it outsold the rest of the top 5 combined.

By week’s end, Cowboy Carter, Bey’s eight solo album, blew away the competition with 40,000 chart units, while “Texas Hold ‘Em” rebounds to the top of the Official U.K. Singles Chart for a fifth non-consecutive week.

That’s her second chart double, and first in over 20 years. The last was back in 2003 when she simultaneously led the national charts with Dangerously In Love and “Crazy In Love” featuring Jay-Z.

Beyoncé isn’t the first female artist to land a country album at the top in the U.K., a territory not known to share a deep affection for the genre. Shania Twain was the trailblazer, when Come On Over topped the Official Albums Chart in September 1999.

Cowboy Carter is Bey’s fifth solo leader in the U.K., following Dangerously In Love (from 2003), 4 (2011), Lemonade (2016) and Renaissance (2022). As a member of Destiny’s Child, alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, Beyoncé owns another No. 1 with 2001’s Survivor.

Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo’s former leader Guts (Geffen) lifts 3-2 following the release of deluxe “Spilled” edition, which features four tracks previously unavailable digitally, and a new number.

Oxford shoegaze favorites Ride cruise to a fourth career U.K. 10 with Interplay (Wichita Recordings), new at No. 8). Interplay joins 1992’s Going Blank Again (No. 5), 1994’s Carnival Of Light (No. 5) and 2019’s This Is Not A Safe Place (No. 7) in their tally of top tier efforts.

Also cracking the top 40 on debut is Sum 41’s eighth and final studio album, Heaven x Hell (Rise Records), at No. 26; and BTS bandmate j-hope‘s Hope On The Street Vol.1 (BigHit Entertainment) at No. 38.

The four-piece — comprised of Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook — teamed up with longtime friends and collaborators Sugarland at Sunday night’s (April 7) CMT Music Awards at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, for the world premiere performance of “Take Me Home,” a cover of the Phil Collins song released back in 1985.

Sugarland is special guest on the forthcoming tour, with support from The Castellows. Live Nation and Sandbox Live are producing the trek.

“Last night felt like a real homecoming for us and a full circle moment. When we toured with Sugarland last, we would all be backstage harmonizing different cover songs to try and surprise the audience every night,” reads a statement from Little Big Town. “There’s something about this song that feels so nostalgic of that time. It really is like coming home.”

Little Big Town and Sugarland last shared the CMT Music Awards stage 15 years ago, when they were joined by Jake Owen for a rendition of “Life in a Northern Town,” originally released by the Dream Academy in 1985.

On Sunday, Little Big Town chalked up their 13th CMT Music Awards performance.

The upcoming tour, says the band, “feels like a celebration of being a band for 25 years and we’re so excited to throw this party with our great friends Sugarland. We’ll both be playing all our biggest hits and then some. Can’t wait to see everyone.”

All the 2024 CMT Music Awards Performances, Ranked

We look at all the performances featured during Sunday night’s (April 7) CMT Music Awards in Austin, Texas.

On Sunday night (April 7), the CMT Music Awards returned for a second year to the Moody Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Kelsea Ballerini hosted the show solo, while Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Dan + Shay, Warren Zeiders and Ashley Cooke were among the evening’s winners.

Meanwhile, the performance lineup struck a balance between celebrating established and iconic artists while highlighting artists whose careers are on the rise. In addition to elevating hitmakers and newcomers, the show toggled performances from inside the venue and at the UT Tower on the University of Texas campus, combining production-splashed indoor performances with fireworks-accented outdoor sets.

With performances from Cody Johnson and Parker McCollum, this year’s CMT Music Awards nodded to its Lone Star State location. The show also further elevated rising artists such as “Austin” hitmaker Dasha and Brittney Spencer, who was recently featured on Beyoncé’s Billboard 200-topping Cowboy Carter album.

There was plenty more star power too, including performances from Wilson, Ballerini, Keith Urban and Trisha Yearwood, while Jelly Roll closed out the show and took home three awards.

The evening also offered a variety of musical offerings, with some artists performing one of their established hits, while others offered up new songs from upcoming projects. Host and performer Ballerini offered the best of both worlds, putting a fresh spin on an older catalog song.

Here, we rank each of the performances at the 2024 CMT Music Awards, in ascending order:

Garry Van Egmond, Legendary Australian Concert Promoter, Dies at 82

Garry Van Egmond, the veteran impresario behind some of the biggest tours in the history of Australia’s touring business, died Saturday morning (April 6) following complications of recent surgery. He was 82.

Based in Melbourne, Van Egmond was AC/DC’s promoter of choice for touring Australia and New Zealand, and, in 1986, he helmed Dire Straits’ record-smashing Brothers In Arms tour, a juggernaut that shifted more than 900,000 tickets when Australia’s population was just 14 million. More than 250,000 tickets for that Dire Straits tour were sold in Sydney alone.

Dire Straits’ national box-office bonanza was the all-time record holder for tickets sold on a single tour, holding the mark for more than 30 years, until Ed Sheeran’s 2018 Divide tour pushed past one million ticket sales in these parts.

Trending on Billboard

With over 50 years’ experience in live events, Van Egmond sold upwards of 35 million tickets across Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan and Japan, according to a statement from TEG, which acquired the late entrepreneur’s company, Van Egmond Group, in 2020.

Van Egmond’s business also produced AC/DC’s 2010 Black Ice tour, which shifted more than 600,000 tickets across 11 Australian dates (and 760,000 tickets across Australia and New Zealand) and the rock legends’ Rock or Bust Australasia leg in 2015, which the company says sold 460,000 tickets across nine stadium dates in seven cities (five in Australia, two in New Zealand).

Across his career, Van Egmond produced the Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour, Riverdance’s The Show, plus tours by Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, INXS, Prince, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton and more.

“Today the entire TEG family expresses our sadness and mourns the loss of Garry Van Egmond,” comments TEG Group CEO Geoff Jones.

“Garry was not only a highly valued colleague but a thoroughly decent person, and a resounding talent with the highest integrity. His legacy will stand the test of time. Our thoughts are with Christo, Katie and his family through these difficult times.”

Garry is survived by his daughter Katie, son Christo and grandchildren Hugo and Saskia.

The TEG Van Egmond business will continue to be run by managing director Christo Van Egmond, who remembers his father as “a true gentleman in the business and was highly regarded and respected by artists, managers, agents, and everyone he worked with.” He says of his dad, “He was a superb mentor to me and I have enjoyed working with him for nearly 30 years. Over that time we have presented some amazing events in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. He was a fantastic father and friend to me and will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and colleagues.”

Jelly Roll Says Wife Bunnie XO Is ‘Not a Plus-One No More’ at 2024 CMT Awards

To hear Jelly Roll tell it, the three prizes he took home at Sunday’s (April 7) 2024 CMT Music Awards don’t hold a candle to his ultimate reward: seeing Bunnie XO, his wife of eight years, getting all the shine she deserves.

In an interview with Billboard News’ Tetris Kelly on the CMT red carpet Sunday, Jelly Roll beamed when asked about how amazing it was to see Bunnie doing a hosting gig backstage and her other solo endeavors.

“The coolest moment I’ve had this entire process is … when I walked out, they had a placard with my name for where my seat was and then her placard,” Jelly said proudly. “I was like, ‘You’re not a plus-one no more, baby! You’re a seat!’”

Jelly was the biggest winner at Sunday night’s CMT Awards, heading into the show with a leading three nominations and leaving with all three awards — his second year in a row to take home a trio of hardware at the CMTs. The singer/songwriter was especially honored to be facing some very friendly competition for video of the year in Cody Johnson and Kelsea Ballerini, the night’s host; Jelly Roll eventually took home the fan-voted top prize, for “Need a Favor.”

“The coolest part is, Kelsea’s my friend. Cody’s my friend,” he told Billboard News. “And I don’t mean in the way we say friends in the industry – because we’re all ‘friends’ here, right? – but in a real way, of like, I’ve spent real time with them. I’ve spent hours on the phone with Cody, multiple dinners, hung out with him multiple times. I’ve spent real time with Kelsea and Chase,” he said, referencing Ballerini’s Outer Banks star boyfriend Chase Stokes. “These are my friends. So it’s cool.”

Before setting out for his triple-win night, Tetris asked Jelly to describe his breakthrough year in one word.

“Unbelievable,” he said without hesitation. “I’m going to look back one day on all this and be like, ‘What the f— was going on in that decade?’”
