Elsewhere in the Hot 100’s top 10, Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” holds at No. 3, after reaching No. 2. It wears the chart’s top Airplay Gainer ribbon for a second consecutive week (50.5 million, up 23%).

Hozier’s “Too Sweet” rises 5-4 in its second week on the Hot 100, led by a 10% gain to 31.8 million streams, as it tops the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts for a second frame.

Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” dips 4-5 on the Hot 100, two weeks after reaching No. 1, and, below Beyoncé’s debuts, Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” descends 7-8, following six nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning last December, as it logs a 12th week atop the Radio Songs chart (66 million, down 6%).

Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” climbs 10-9, three weeks after it debuted as her ninth No. 1, and Future, Metro Boomin, Travis Scott and Playboi Carti’s “Type Shit” falls 2-10 in its second week on the survey.

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ No. 1 Debut Gets Props From Collaborators Tanner Adell, Reyna Roberts: ‘It’s Really, Really Special’

Tanner Adell is just a few years into her country career, but on Sunday night (April 8) at the 2024 CMT Music Awards she was elated to celebrate her first chart-topper on the Billboard 200. When Billboard‘s Tetris Kelly mentioned that Adell was featured on Beyoncé‘s eighth No. 1 album, Cowboy Carter, the Kentucky native could not suppress a giant smile as she said, “apparently.”

Adell — who sings alongside Bey on the interpretation of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” (which in Beyoncé’s version is titled “Blackbiird”) — said “it feels incredible. Congratulations to Bey, she’s worked so hard — especially just… Act I, now we’re Act II and I can’t wait for Act III. I’m just starting out and it feels pretty amazing to have one of my… not even one of my, my favorite artist on the planet know my name, put me on this album and now it’s debuted at No. 1. It’s very special.”

Pitching things forward a bit to the 2025 Grammy Awards, Kelly noted that if Cowboy Carter is nominated for the elusive album of the year prize that Beyoncé — the most-decorated artist in Grammy history — has never yet won, Tanner could get a major moment in the sun. Rendered speechless, Tanner smiled and said, “I guess?”

“I’m an independent artist, it’s been a grind and just to have someone of that caliber reach down and lift us up it’s really, really special and i’m just very honored,” said the singer who released her debut album, Buckle Bunny, last summer.

Cowboy Carter debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart dated April 13, debuting with 407,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending April 4 according to Luminate; the album marks the singer’s eighth No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200. Cowboy Carter also has dibs on the biggest week of 2024 to date, marking the largest opening frame since Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) bowed with 1.653 million units in November.

Another contemporary Black country act who had high praise for Bey on Sunday was Reyna Roberts, who also lends her voice to “Blackbiird,” along with Brittney Spencer, Adell and Tiera Kennedy. “Absolutely! I believe it. I’ve always believed that I was going to history, not sure in what capacity,” said “Stompin’ Grounds” singer Roberts of possibly being part of a major moment if Bey is finally fitted for the AOTY crown next year. “I’m just grateful that Beyoncé allowed us to be part of her dream and her project. This is phenomenal, I can’t even describe how excited and happy I am.”

On the CMT red carpet, tAdell also showed of the new “Blackbiird”-inspired tattoo on her arm, noting that Roberts got her own version as well to commemorate their unexpected place in the Bey universe. “We all did it in our own style kind of how we wanted to,” she said showing off the bird image ink on her right forearm. “We just felt like this is a really big moment and something to commemorate the experience of being able to work together with someone that we all look up to very much.”

The Diddler aka Diddy Seemingly Takes Defiant Tone In Latest IG Post Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

The boisterous mogul has been understandably S I L E N T following waves of sexual assault allegations, but with his latest post on IG, he could have possibly made his loudest statement yet.

Diddy’s life has been turned upside down after his ex-longtime girlfriend, singer/model Cassie Ventura, slapped him with a sexual assault lawsuit with eye-brow-raising accusations, opening the floodgates.

He did quickly settle with the “Me & U” singer, but that didn’t stop other alleged victims from coming out and accusing the music mogul of some disgusting behavior that has also swept up a lot of people in his orbit, including his son, Christian Combs who is now the target of a sexual assault.

Two days ago, the 54-year-old Bad Boy CEO shared a full-length clip from his 1998 single “Victory,” showing him ironically running from the law with the caption, “Bad Boy For Life.”

Variety reports that the post received over 200,000 likes since he shared it and features numerous shows of support from some celebrity friends, including his son.

Per Variety:

The comments were left open, and Christian Combs, who is reportedly being sued by a woman for sexual assault in 2022 — wrote “Who you know do it better!!” with three fire emojis. Multiple mid-level artists — including Ginuwine and Lil Scrappy, also weighed in with support. The clip was posted in both his Instagram story and as a stand-alone post; as of Saturday morning it had reached 200,000 likes.

This post marks the first time in a while since the accusations hit that Diddy has left the comment section on one of his posts open.

The Saga Continues For Diddy

He has also been popping up randomly around Miami following the raid on his homes and constant trolling from his longtime nemesis, 50 Cent, who has also been indirectly involved in the mess being that his baby mama, Daphne Joy, was named as an alleged “sex worker” in a lawsuit from producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones.

Joy clapped back at the G-Unit general, accusing him of rape and being an absent father after the “Wanksta” crafter said he was going to file for full custody of the former couple’s 11-year-old son, Sire Jackson.

The rapper, born Curtis Jackson, denies Joy’s claims.

In his latest trolling of Diddy, he used the new “pause” replacement, “No P.Diddy,” during his set at the Dreamville music festival.

Never change Fif.

Russell Simmons’ Daughter Aoki Seen With Decades-Older Beau On The Beach

Aoki Lee Simmons was spotted enjoying beach time with a much older beau, and her disgraced father Russell Simmons appeared supportive in social media posts.

Last week, Aoki Lee Simmons was spotted at the beach on the island of St. Barts in the company of restauranteur Vittorio Assaf, indulging in heavy public displays of affection including sharing kisses. The 21-year-old model and Harvard University graduate is the youngest daughter of rap mogul Russell Simmons and former model and entrepreneur Kimora Lee Simmons. Assad, 65, co-founded the Serafina Restaurant Group in New York City.

In the recently released photos, Simmons and Assaf could be seen frolicking, with the restauranteur taking pictures of Simmons in various poses. Notably, it was reported that the photographs of the excursion showed up on Aoki Lee Simmons’ Instagram page – with Assaf not being shown in any of them. “Girls (possibly mermaids!) on film,” she wrote in the caption of one photo, sporting an olive green bikini.

An unnamed source did confirm that the two were seeing each other in People Magazine, saying that they were “enjoying each others’ company.” Simmons also recently was in Assaf’s hometown of Milan, Italy during their fashion week in February.

Aoki would then talk about the pair in an Instagram Live session and referred to Assaf as her “boyfriend” while seeming to be intoxicated, which garnered some brushback from fans concerned over the wide age disparity between her and Assaf. “Shes actually giving little girl energy and it’s making it extremely creepy,” one person reportedly commented. Assaf made headlines in 2021 after his now ex-wife Charlotte Bonstrom left him for the ex-husband of her twin sister.

The relationship between Russell Simmons and his daughters has been rocky with Aoki even calling her dad out for abusive behavior online but the 66-year-old Def Jam Records founder seemed to be supportive of his youngest daughter’s new relationship in photos that he shared on his Instagram Stories over the weekend. “Happy Sunday,” he wrote with one photo of Aoki and her sister, Ming when they were children that he shared. He also shared a photo of himself and Aoki in another Instagram post, writing: “Throwback from last fathers day nyc …bode bikram yoga express class .. vegan lunch cryotherapy vitamin drip … all around amazing  day ❤️ @aokileesimmons  love you always”

Ariana Grande Teases ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Album Cycle ‘Has Only Just Begun’

Ariana Grande has confirmed that fans can expect sunny skies for the indefinite future. Exactly one month after dropping her seventh studio album Eternal Sunshine, the 30-year-old pop star shared a behind-the-scenes video of her in the studio and revealed that she’s definitely not done promoting the project — in fact, she’s only just getting started.

In the clip, which the singer posted to TikTok Monday (April 8), Grande sits at her computer with a microphone in hand, recording various background vocals and counter melodies as she works on Eternal Sunshine’s title track.

“eternal sunshine bridge melody passes ?(i came back to fine tune the structure and write the lyrics the next afternoon),” she captioned the post. “happy one month of eternal sunshine.”

Trending on Billboard

“i cannot wait for everything that has yet to come within this eternal sunshine cycle (that has only just begun & may it never end),” Grande added. “thank you for your love.”

The R.E.M. Beauty founder released her latest record March 8, immediately topping the Billboard 200 for two weeks. Apart from music videos for the singles “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends” — both of which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 – as well as performances on Saturday Night Live the weekend of Eternal Sunshine’s release, Grande has kept her promo for the album quite minimal so far, leaving fans hungry for more.

The Wicked star also sat for two interviews about the Max Martin-produced project in March: one with Zach Sang and the other with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe. On The Zach Sang Show, she touched on a topic that weaves a common thread through Eternal Sunshine – frustration with the public scrutinizing her relationships, be it with ex-husband Dalton Gomez or boyfriend Ethan Slater.

“We don’t need to go into any specifics, but of course there’s an insatiable frustration, an inexplicable hellish feeling with watching people misunderstand the people you love, and you,” she said at the time. “It was definitely the most emotional writing process, for sure.”

Ernest Jokes About Morgan Wallen’s Nashville Arrest: Watch

“Flower Shops” singer-songwriter Ernest took to Instagram on Monday morning (April 8), good-naturedly heckling his friend, labelmate, “Flower Shops” collaborator and frequent co-writer Morgan Wallen, following the latter’s arrest on Sunday night (April 7). Wallen was arrested after allegedly throwing a chair off the roof of Eric Church’s six-story Chief’s bar that just opened in downtown Nashville.

Ernest posted a video on Instagram with the caption, “Alexa, play ‘The Chair’ by George Strait,” while the video showed him in a car, slightly shaking his head, while the video was emblazoned with the words, “When Morgan asks me if I wanna go to Broadway…” Ernest’s song “I Would If I Could” with Lainey Wilson plays, featuring the lyrics, “I would if I could, I can’t, so I won’t, but I want to…”

Trending on Billboard

“I Would If I Could” is featured on his upcoming album Nashville, Tennessee, which releases Friday (April 12).

Worrick Robinson of Worrick Robinson Law confirmed the country star’s arrest to Billboard on Monday (April 8). “At 10:53 p.m. Sunday evening, Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct,” the country star’s attorney said in a statement. “He is cooperating fully with authorities.”

Wallen’s publicist also confirmed to Billboard that Wallen had been released from jail.

Ernest has been promoting his upcoming album by launching the humorous website ernestformayor.com and posting humorous “campaign trail” videos on social media. He also responded to Country Central‘s Instagram post about Wallen’s arrest, commenting, “I’ve been needing a chairman for my mayor campaign…found my guy.”

Ernest is a co-writer on some of Wallen’s biggest hits, including “You Proof,” “Wasted on You,” “More Than My Hometown” and “This Bar.” His upcoming album also features another collab with Wallen, on the song “Hangin’ On.”

Notably, The Wallen/Church duet of “Man Made a Bar” is currently at No. 2 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart. However, the song isn’t an Ernest co-write; instead, the radio hit comes courtesy of songwriters Brett Tyler, Jordan Dozzi, Larry Fleet and Rocky Block.

Wallen just launched his One Night at a Time 2024 World Tour in Indianapolis on April 4, and is slated to perform at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on May 2-4. Wallen’s next court date is also set for May 3 in Nashville.

Why the U.S. Needs a Federal Grant Program for Individual Artists

Every passing day, a new statistic emerges that would make any aspiring artist, producer, or songwriter feel foolish for trying to fund their dreams.

Over 100,000 songs get ingested to Spotify daily, but the vast majority of them fail to surpass the 1,000-play mark. Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group reported record profits in 2023, but those numbers are largely driven by a small number of star artists. A 2017 study showed that out of 7,000 bands tracked, only 21 managed to headline a venue with a capacity exceeding 3,000. Limited opportunity and long odds face artists who don’t have significant industry backing.

Content saturation makes it harder to stand out, inspiring strategic conservatism from major labels, who, driven by data, fear financial risk and tend to invest in artists who demonstrate substantial market appeal.

Trending on Billboard

What are musicians — and, frankly, writers, visual artists, filmmakers, or any creators — in need of resources to do when corporations appear more risk-averse than ever?

Why do we need a grant system for individual artists?

While art is often considered a luxury rather than a public good, it has been shown to provide both cultural enrichment and economic stimulus.

In 2023, Americans for the Arts found that the nonprofit arts and culture industry provided 2.6 million jobs, generated $29.1 billion in tax revenue, and provided $101 billion in personal income to U.S. residents. These numbers include the individuals who benefit from public arts funding to become working artists, who tour, show their work at museums, and fill movie theaters.

America’s nonprofit and for-profit arts sectors work together to promote cultural growth as much as they stimulate economic activity locally and nationally.

Public funding for the arts has remained relatively steady in absolute terms. However, inflation-adjusted spending on the arts by local governments has declined consistently throughout the 2000s. Local arts agencies now receive 27% less in funding than they did in 2001.

Other countries have shown a better system can exist.

For 37 years, Canada’s FACTOR grant program has supported Canadian recording artists in meaningful ways.

FACTOR covers costs that traditionally require the debt financing of a label deal: recording, music videos, and tour funding chief among them.

Notable FACTOR recipients launched into successful careers include Jessie Reyez, Grimes, Charlotte Cardin, BADBADNOTGOOD and TOBi. Drake’s vaunted company October’s Very Own has also received a variety of grants from Canadian governmental sources — including funding for the 2014 OVO Fest.

In Sweden, robust arts education in public schools combined with an internationally-minded grant system contribute to the small nation’s outsized influence on popular music abroad, particularly in the United States where Max Martin’s Swedish pop sensibilities have dominated Billboard charts since Bill Clinton was in office.

While in America, artists can gain access to grants through institutions like the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation or the Henry Luce Foundation, or via state institutions, there is no unified federal mechanism for arts funding akin to FACTOR or the Swedish Arts Grant Committee. The National Endowment for the Arts has an impressive grantmaking operation but does not give direct grants to individual artists.

Introducing the CREATE Art Act.

We need a better system.

In 2024, we are working to bring the CREATE Art Act to the American public. Created by Congressman Maxwell Frost, a drummer and musician himself and the first Gen-Z person ever elected to the United States Congress, the CREATE Art Act proposes a novel grant system for individual artists of all disciplines.

CREATE grants go beyond international models in the way they target emerging artists, those creators who may not yet have the good fortune of making a living off of their art or wish to avoid potentially injurious record and publishing deals. Recipients must show net earnings of less than $50,000 in the previous five years and not more than $400,000 in the previous 20 years from their art. The art produced must be relevant to the community and accessible to the public. The grants include:

  • Progress Grant – Up to $2,000 to support a year of artist activities.
  • Project Grant – Up to $100,000 per project that can be used over two years.
  • Live Performance Grant – Up to $35,000 for live performances.
  • Development Fund – Up to $10,000 to pay the living and working expenses of artists
  • while they research, write, or cultivate stories or projects.

The purpose of the program is twofold.

First, and simply, more artists with funding means more art. The greater the creative output of our nation, the greater the diversity of voices with the potential to gain an audience, shift perspectives, inspire future generations, and tell new American stories.

Second, more artists creating means more economic activity in a sector experiencing an algae bloom of creators and consumers.

The current media landscape cuts a more jagged figure than ever. No monoliths. No starmakers. No obvious paths to success.

In a time of such noise and fragmentation, artists find it as hard as ever to fund their dreams and more difficult than before to cut through the clutter.

The CREATE Art Act would plant a foot on the right path forward, opening up possibilities for generations of American artists to come.

The first member of Generation Z to be elected to Congress, Maxwell Alejandro Frost is proud to represent the people of Central Florida (FL-10) in the United States House of Representatives. As a young Member of Congress and Afro-Latino, Congressman Frost brings a fresh, progressive perspective to an institution formerly out of reach for young, working Black and Latino Americans.

Billie Eilish Explains the ‘Huge Responsibility’ to Make New Album ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ Her Most Eco-Friendly Yet

On Monday morning (April 8), the moment fans had been waiting for had finally arrived: Billie Eilish announced her forthcoming third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, out May 17.

After changing her Instagram icon to blue last week and plastering teaser posters of lyrics across major cities, Eilish delivered a clever promotional stunt: adding her millions of followers to her Close Friends stories on the app. According to CrowdTangle, her social media savvy led to a major win, as the superstar gained more than seven million new followers in just a two-day span.

Of course, for the sake of promoting a new album, the timing couldn’t be better. But as Eilish and her team explain, there’s a much larger goal in mind with this particular rollout. “The fact that I have a far bigger audience and platform than I’ve ever had in my life means I can reach that many more people, and that’s such a huge responsibility and privilege to have,” Eilish tells Billboard. “If I don’t use that privilege to do some good in the world, then what’s the point?”

Trending on Billboard

“My parents have always kept me well informed and hyper aware that every choice we make and every action we take has an impact somewhere or on someone, good or bad, and that has always stuck with me,” she continues. “I can’t just ignore what I know and go about my business and career and not do something. That’s just not how I was raised, or how I want to live my life.”

To coincide with the album announcement, Eilish has updated her website’s homepage to include a sustainability tab, offering a transparent breakdown of the album’s many eco-friendly innovations when it comes to physical product, from vinyl and CDs to merchandise. It’s the culmination of her yearslong efforts to change the music industry from within, as she and her mother, Maggie Baird, have been fighting for more sustainable practices across the business from day one.

Since we first met them, this [has been] the foundation of our relationship with them,” says Steve Berman, vice chairman of the newly formed Interscope Capitol Labels Group. Berman notes how it’s a team-wide effort across Interscope and Justin Lubliner’s Darkroom along with co-managers Danny Rukasin and Brandon Goodman of Best Friends Music. “We’re in this every day together,” continues Berman. “We are always looking at this through the lens of not only what we can do, but as the platform gets bigger, what are more opportunities to be focused on this and have impact and empower change?”

With Hit Me Hard and Soft, that comes down to doubling down on encouraging new physical production standards that implore the most eco-friendly practices currently feasible, with the goal of changing systemic and industry-wide practices that have been influenced by charting, retailer and consumer demands.

Hit Me Hard and Soft will have a limit of eight vinyl variants, all of which will become available on the same day and feature the exact same track-listing – and, most importantly, all of which are produced by using recycled materials. The standard black variant is made from 100% recycled black vinyl while the remaining seven colored vinyl will be made from ECO-MIX or BioVinyl. ECO-MIX is created from 100% recycled compound made of leftovers from any colors that can’t otherwise be used, resulting in a unique pressing of every LP, while BioVinyl helps reduce carbon emissions by 90% by using non-fossil fuel materials like used cooking oil or industrial waste gases.

“It’s really an important responsibility to honor the work that Billie does and how she and her family see it,” says Berman. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s something we’re really proud of to be able to bring it to her fans in the cleanest way possible…So much thought and energy have gone into making sure that we’re being respectful of the fans and making sure that we have vinyl – it’s an important part of the connection to the music and the art.”

And their efforts don’t end with the vinyl discs alone: the packaging for each variant is made 100% from post-consumer waste and recycled fiber pre-consumer waste; the ink is raw plant-based and water-based dispersion varnish; the sleeves are 100% recycled and reusable; and all goods are then packaged and shipped in recyclable shipping boxes.

And across cassette and CDs, no plastic boxes will be used. Cassette shells will be made from recycled shell pieces while CD packaging will replace jewel cases with softpaks that use 100% renewable fibers.

“We are doing everything we can to minimize waste in every aspect of my music,” says Eilish. “[My label has] listened to my concerns and helped me find the best way forward when releasing music and product into the world.”

“[Universal Music Group] has set global goals around emissions reduction and working with Billie is a great opportunity to co-create product-related solutions with her,” adds Veronica Dullack, SVP of global ESG & sustainability at UMG. “Over the last couple of years, we’ve worked together to support and enable her bold choices,” from recycled vinyl to merchandise, which is made from prior production dead stock, organic or recycled polyester or cotton and non-toxic dyes.

With the rollout and release of Hit Me Hard and Soft, Eilish and her team will continue to partner with Reverb as well – an organization she has worked with on numerous initiatives, from partially powering her mainstage set at Lollapalooza Chicago last year with solar-charged batteries to saving 8.8 million gallons of water by serving plant-based meals for artists and crew on her Happier Than Ever tour and more.

“Billie, her family and her team don’t seem afraid to shake things up and question the status quo, especially when it comes to how the music industry does business…We’re excited that her new album is integrating cutting-edge production methods and materials,” says Reverb founder Adam Gardner. “Artists like Billie have tremendous power to influence and change the entire music industry and how it operates –  and that’s exactly what she’s doing.”

Eilish has emerged as a leader when it comes to sustainability in music and she hopes “that others will adopt the same practices, and they will eventually become standard. It really is as simple as that.”
