Bebe Rexha, Tems & Justin Bieber, The Rose, Reneé Rapp & Kesha, Plus More: Best Moments of Coachella 2024 Day 3

Day 3 of Coachella 2024 was all about the surprise guest. Find our highlights from J Balvin, DJ Snake, Doja Cat, Victoria Monet, 88Rising, Lil Yachty & more.

Who wants a Sunday surprise?

Day 3 of Coachella 2024 was all about the surprise guest. Honestly, an entirely new, parallel Coachella lineup could be constructed out of the unannounced artists who popped up on stages across the Empire Polo Club grounds on Sunday (April 15).

The night’s headliner alone brought out three guests, with Doja Cat enlisting A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage and Teezo Touchdown for her festival-wrapping set. Then we had Reneé Rapp inviting Kesha to duet on “Tik Tok”; Tems drawing both Wizkid and Justin Bieber out for their “Essence” remix; and J Balvin getting Will Smith back in his Men in Black suit for an otherworldly cameo (more on all three of those major moments below).

In her debut at the festival, Bebe Rexha invited Coachella vet David Guetta to join her for their dance smash “I’m Good (Blue),” DJ Snake invited out both Robin S. and Peso Pluma, and Lil Yachty called on Mac DeMarco (oh, we’ve got all those covered below too).

A few other special guests from Sunday: YG Marley brought out his mother, Lauryn Hill, to perform a series of solo and Fugees hits with her, and they teamed up on a couple of songs by his late grandfather, Bob Marley, as well. (Oh yeah, and Busta Rhymes popped up with YG too, for “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and his feature on Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now.”) And if that isn’t enough, Katy Perry was there too! She joined her best friend Mia Moretti for her DJ set on the DoLab Stage.

So much happened beyond all those well-planned surprises though. Below, find Billboard‘s best moments from the third and final day of Coachella 2024 weekend one.

5 Best Moments From Doja Cat’s Proudly Strange Coachella 2024 Headlining Set

While Sunday (April 14) was the coldest night of the first weekend of Coachella 2024 — with many attendees keeping warm by wrapping themselves in silver emergency blankets — you wouldn’t have known it by looking at Doja Cat.

Closing out the festival as its Sunday night headliner, the rapper performed a lot of her show while wearing a white fur two-piece outfit, looking hot in every sense of the word despite the fact that temperatures were in the high 50s and a biting wind was blowing across the polo field.

No matter. With the performance, Doja squashed debate about whether she was a big enough star to headline Coachella — not by pandering to the audience, but just by embracing her signature strangeness. Think playful wigs, a mud pit, a fake Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, dancing yetis and other elements presented with total dedication to the bit. This performance happened upon an industrial, multi-tiered stage rig built from scaffolding and multiple walkways jutting out into the crowd, a setup upon which Doja and her crew of dancers prowled.

Altogether, they not only filled the space — a significant task on a stage that size — but made it their own. The performance (which was very short on crowd banter) was a touch theatrical, but never felt inauthentic, ultimately functioning as either a reminder of or introduction to Doja’s charisma, talent and oddball sensibilities.

But it wasn’t a greatest-hits set, with Doja totally avoiding smashes like “Woman” and “Say So,” and instead focusing on more recent material, much of it — “Demons,” “Fuck the Girls” “Acknowledge Me,” “Gun” — from her 2023 album, Scarlet, and its deluxe edition, Scarlet 2: CLAUDE, that dropped earlier this month. With the performance, Doja became only the second Black woman to headline Coachella, following Beyoncé’s landmark Beychella set in 2018.

Below, find five of the best moments from her Coachella 2024 headlining show.

Taylor Swift Adores Ryan Gosling’s Cover of ‘All Too Well’ on ‘SNL’

Taylor Swift was watching when Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt performed her song “All Too Well” on Saturday Night Live. And she’s all for it.

Gosling hosted Saturday’s episode of SNL, and was joined by his The Fall Guy co-star Emily Blunt for a cover of her Red-era release during the monologue.

At the top, Gosling assured viewers that he “would not make any jokes” about his character Ken from the Barbie movie,“because they’re not funny.” He’s kidding; they’re hilarious. And with that, Gosling set up the musical gag.

“You know, when you play a character that hard, that long, just letting go feels like a breakup and for processing a breakup, there’s really only one thing that can help: the music of the great Taylor Swift,” Gosling remarked.

Gosling then slotted in at a grand piano and channeled his loveable-but-dimwitted Ken with a parody of “All Too Well,” complete with dark shades and a white fur coat.

Swift’s lyrics were tweaked for the occasion. “I shredded Venice Beach is true / My clothes were tight / But something about that spandex felt so right / I left my rollerblades in that big pink house / But I still got that fur coat and I’ll wear that right now,” he sings. “If I said that I was doing fine, you know I’d be lying / ‘Cause I was just Ken and now I’m just Ryan.”

Swift gave the moment her seal of approval with a post on Instagram. “All Too Well (Ryan and Emily’s Version)!!! Watch me accidentally catch myself singing this version on tour. This monologue is everything,” she writes.

Gosling, even when he’s out of character, has a special connection with the song. In an interview with Fandango posted last week on YouTube, Gosling and Blunt talked TayTay while discussing their new film alongside director David Leitch and stunt doubles Ben Jenkins and Logan Holladay.

The actors shared their personal favorite tracks in the 14-time Grammy winner’s catalogue, with Gosling revealing, “‘All Too Well’ right now has a real soft spot in my heart.”

Swift is currently enjoying some downtime during her extensive The Eras Tour. She restarts her schedule with concerts May 24 and 25 at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal, followed by a run of eight mid-summer shows at London’s Wembley Stadium.

Beyoncé’s record-setting country-leaning release Cowboy Carter (Columbia/Parkwood Ent) is removed from the chart throne, down 1-2, while Earlestown, England outfit The K’s complete the podium with their debut LP, I Wonder If The World Knows? (LAB), new at No. 3.

Mariah Carey’s Vegas Residency Is a Triumphant Celebration of Mimi

Anyone who’s read Mariah Carey‘s bestselling 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” will know that the singer has often described her life as a “rollercoaster.” It’s a term that came up again Saturday (April 13) on the second night of Carey’s “The Celebration of Mimi” residency in Las Vegas, though unlike her at-times tumultuous career, this was one ride that you never wanted to end.

Taking place at Dolby Live inside the Park MGM Hotel, the 16-date residency is billed as a celebration in advance of the upcoming 20th anniversary of Carey’s critically-acclaimed album, The Emancipation of Mimi, though the festive affair felt more like a career-spanning retrospective of hits.

Trending on Billboard

Indeed, after a brief voiceover intro that referenced her “rollercoaster” life, Carey descended upon the stage to open with “Vision of Love,” her Billboard No. 1 debut single from 1990. What followed was a nostalgic journey through some of Carey’s biggest hits, each in chronological order of when they were released, and many accompanied by a story or quip about how the song came to be.

Introducing “Dreamlover,” Carey reminisced about rehearsing with Aretha Franklin at 1998’s Divas Live concert, where Franklin remarked that she “loved” the song, and playfully suggested that the two perform the track instead of their scheduled duet instead. While the Divas Live setlist went ahead as scheduled — sans “Dreamlover” — Carey said she couldn’t believe the song got the Queen of Soul’s approval. “I was like ‘Oh my god,’” Carey squeaked in mock surprise on stage. “Ms Franklin was talking to me!

Backed by a four-piece band, eight dancers and three background vocalists (including Trey Lorenz who duets with Carey on “I’ll Be There”), the songs are interspersed with old interview clips from each album cycle and motivational quotes on screen narrated by Carey herself.

Because the concert went through Carey’s catalog in chronological order, crowd-pleaser “Hero” was performed early on in the show rather than as her usual encore. But the revised setlist offered other surprises as well, like Carey’s memorable cover of Badfinger’s “Without You,” which the singer typically only performs internationally, and “Looking In,” the poignant Daydream album closer that Carey last performed in 2013.

The loudest cheers were saved for the Butterfly era, which Carey has called her “favorite” and “most personal” album. Perched on a pink and lavender couch elevated high above the stage, the singer ran through a medley of the album’s R&B cuts, including “Babydoll,” “Breakdown” and “The Roof,” which Carey recently remade for her MasterClass course. After an uptempo mashup of “Honey” and “Heartbreaker” (from the Rainbow album) it was time for the main event.

When The Emancipation of Mimi was released in 2005, critics hailed it as Carey’s “comeback album,” following muted reactions to 2002’s Charmbracelet, and her movie soundtrack Glitter, which was released on September 11 (neither of those albums were performed at the residency, though Carey’s dancers break out some moves during a Glitter/Charmbracelet interlude that serves as a set change). Mimi though, was an immediate hit with fans, spawning two number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, while sending Carey across a world tour that took her as far as Tunisia and Japan.

Here in Vegas, the album was showcased in all its glory, with Carey rising from the stage in a glamorous gold gown to the refrains of “I Wish You Knew,” an old-school soul ballad with a spoken-word bridge that’s a favorite among the singer’s lambily. That was followed by a one-two punch of “It’s Like That” and “Say Something,” which kept the already buoyant crowd on its feet.

Though Mimi was released in 2005, the songs sounded just as fresh and relevant as they did (almost) 20 years ago. Case in point: Carey opened “Shake It Off” with an interpolation of Bryson Tiller’s “Don’t,” which samples the track in its second verse. Carey has said she wanted to create something “timeless” with The Emancipation of Mimi, and the residency proves she has more than succeeded.

Though Carey is known for sprinkling some “diva” moments into her shows, she largely eschews the antics this time around in favor of letting the music speak for itself. The singer has been known to be wheeled or carried off-stage by dancers, but this time she walks(!) in heels(!) by herself(!) in between costume changes (of which there were five on the night). Carey walking herself backstage is a small detail of course, but in a way, it perfectly incapsulates the feeling of the show.

While Carey has performed in Vegas before, she has never sounded or looked better. And while other artists of her caliber would rest on familiar songs or arrangements, Carey continues to push herself with musical director Daniel Moore, to offer deep cuts for the fans, while reinventing her hits in new and novel ways.

And then there’s the walking thing.

Closing the show in a nude mesh Swarovski gown, Carey capped the triumphant night with The Emancipation of Mimi’s signature songs, “We Belong Together” and “Fly Like a Bird,” before the curtains began to slowly close on the star-lit stage. Standing solo before the sold-out crowd, the superstar waved farewell, then picked up her dress and shuffled her stilettos offstage, unaccompanied — and unfazed.

If The Emancipation of Mimi was about freeing Carey from her past, the “Celebration of Mimi” residency is about seeing her legacy forward. No one has ever doubted the singer and songwriter’s talent, but two decades removed from her landmark album, Mariah Carey is proving that she can still do it all on her own — and on her own terms — high heels and all.

Hozier Earns ‘Sweet’ U.K. No. 1

More than a decade after his global breakthrough, Hozier finally bags a U.K. No. 1 single with “Too Sweet”.

The Irish singer and songwriter benefits from the release of an expanded deluxe edition of his third LP Unreal Unearth, which led the national albums chart last August.

“Too Sweet” (via Island) accumulates 61,000 chart units and 6.7 million streams, making it the most-streamed track of the week in the U.K., according to the Official Charts Company, as the title lifts 4-1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published Friday, April 12.

It’s Hozier’s second U.K. top 10 single, joining his signature song “Take Me To Church,” which was released back in September 2013 and peaked at No. 2 the following year.

The leader at the midweek stage, Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” (Warner Records) holds at No. 2, while Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” (Columbia/Parkway Ent) loses its crown, down 1-3.

Meanwhile British singer, songwriter and producer Artemas snags a career high with his electronic-pop number “i like the way you kiss me” (Parlophone), up 6-5. This current chart is twice as nice for Artemas, as his followup “if u think i’m pretty” lifts 52-39, for his second U.K top 40 appearance.

As country music cracks the whip in the U.K., Dasha makes her move on the singles chart with “Austin” (Warner Records). It’s up 15-8 as Dasha books her first-ever U.K. top 10 spot.

J. Cole lifts his tally of top 40 hits to 12, thanks to the surprise release of his mixtape, Might Delete Later (Interscope). Fresh cuts “H.Y.B.” featuring Bas and Central Cee (at No. 29) and the controversial, Kendrick Lamar diss track “7 Minute Drill (at No. 38), open their accounts.

Finally, EDM David Guetta star bags his 48th top 40 hit in the U.K. with “I Don’t Wanna Wait,” a collaboration with OneRepublic, new at No. 37. It’s OneRepublic 10th top 40 appearance.

Emerging from a brief hiatus since 2022, the Colombian superstar returned to the global stage with a bang, reminding everyone why he reigns as the king of Colombian reggaetón.

As the clock struck 8:30 p.m. Pacific time, Balvin took the stage amidst the eerie sight of a UFO hovering overhead, setting the tone for a night of otherworldly entertainment. Rocking cornrows and a Vetements leather jacket adorned with alien-like patches — and later changing to a sparkly stardust get-up — the Medellín native opened with his signature hit “Mi Gente,” instantly captivating the audience with his magnetic presence and electrifying energy.

Joined by collaborators Jowel & Randy and De La Ghetto, Balvin’s performance seamlessly blended old-school reggaetón vibes with futuristic EDM beats, keeping the crowd on their feet with hits recent hits like the Tainy-produced “Colmillo” and “Dientes.” But the night took a thrilling turn when Balvin surprised fans with a special appearance by none other than Will Smith, who delivered a nostalgic rendition of “Men In Black,” dressed as his iconic character from the movie.

Throughout the night, Balvin’s stage presence and visuals were nothing short of awe-inspiring, backed by extraterrestrial visuals and dancers in costums, and even a mechanical space praying mantis adding to the sci-fi atmosphere. From his breakthrough hit “Ginza” to collaborations like “Con Altura,” the superstar showcased the breadth of his catalog, leaving fans lit with every song.

Taking a moment to express gratitude to his fans, he acknowledged the love and support that had fueled his journey back to the stage. “Y si el pueblo pide Reggaeton!” he shouted. As the night came to a close with “Qué Calor,” Balvin left the audience buzzing with excitement, proving once again why he’s one of Latin music’s biggest stars.

Other Latino artists performing at Coachella this year included Young Miko, Bizarrap, Santa Fe Klan, Ludmilla and Hermanos Gutierrez.

Coachella 2024: Justin Bieber Reunites With Tems on ‘Essence’

For one of the biggest performances of her career, Tems called on one of the biggest stars pop stars in the business — Justin Bieber.

The Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer delivered a set at Coachella 2024 on Sunday night (April 14), and brought out the big guns in Bieber and Wizkid, who both stepped onto the stage for a performance of their hit “Essence.”

Fans had been warned. “Coachella! I’m too exciteddd I have a surprise tonight,” she wrote earlier on X.

Originally released in 2020 and recorded with Bieber and fellow Afrobeats star Wizkid, “Essence” was a true slow-burner, impacting Billboard’s charts nine months after its release. Tems would reign over Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay in September 2021 with “Essence,” making history along the way. “Essence” also cracked the Billboard Hot 100, and would enter the top 10 (peaking at No. 9), becoming the first Afrobeats song to do so.

Bieber is no stranger to smashing chart records. At 27, the Canadian pop singer became the youngest solo artist in history to notch 100 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat he reached in 2021.

The “Stay” singer has kept a relatively low profile since June 2022, when he revealed his diagnosis with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, with one side of his face experiencing “full paralysis.” On Sunday night, he showed no ill effects as he glided around the Coachella stage. Watch below.

Bieber’s performance will surely send Beliebers into a frenzy, and renew hope for more live dates in the wake of his health problems, which contributed to the cancelation of his 2022 Justice World Tour.

That excitement lifted a gear earlier in the year, when Bieber performed a surprise short set of classics and recent hits at Drake’s 2,500-capacity downtown club History and, earlier, hinted at new music to come.

Tems was Billboard’s 2024 Women in Music Breakthrough recipient, telling reporters ahead of the event: “I really want to use this opportunity to say to all the women in the room, in the world, that no matter what you’re going through, you should know you’re not alone. So even when you’re sad, even when you’re angry, there’s someone that’s angry, too. So uplift everybody around you because they need that like you and somebody’s there for you,” she concluded her speech. “It’s the women that got the women, trust me.”

She previously told Billboard, “everybody just called me Temi. Nobody really called me by my full name. It wasn’t something that was on my mind. It’s only now, as an adult, that I started realizing that it meant ‘the crown is mine.’ I think that’s really powerful. It feels manifested, based on how my life has gone.“

Tyler, the Creator, Doja Cat and Lana Del Rey are leading the pack as this year’s headliners for the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. This weekend is the first of two weekends of Coachella 2024, held in the Southern California desert.

Kesha & Reneé Rapp Update ‘Tik Tok’ Diddy Lyric in Surprise Coachella Duet

Kesha overhauled the opening lyric of her 2009 breakthrough hit, “Tik Tok,” when she joined Reneé Rapp on stage at Coachella on Sunday (April 14). The song famously name-drops Diddy, who faces sexual assault and abuse allegations and whose homes were recently raided in connection with a federal sex-trafficking investigation.

In the original recording of “Tik Tok,” off of Kesha’s Animals album, she sings: “Wake up in the mornin’ feelin’ like P. Diddy/ Grab my glasses, I’m out the door, I’m gonna hit this city.”

During Rapp’s set at the Indio, California, festival Sunday, Kesha was warmly introduced as a special guest (and also as “the hottest person on the Earth”).

Kesha arrived on stage and launched into a 2024 version of “Tik Tok,” singing: “Wake up in the mornin’ like, ‘F— P. Diddy.’” Rapp yelled this out with Kesha, with both pop stars giving the middle finger at the same time.

And just in case anyone thought they misheard that lyric, Kesha made it loud and clear with a tweet following her surprise appearance at the fest.

“WAKE UP IN THE MORNING LIKE F— P DIDDY,” Kesha wrote on X (formerly Twitter) Sunday night.

Rapp and Kesha have previously shared the stage, performing the latter’s “Your Love Is My Drug” in Brooklyn in November. “Getting to sing with one of your idols, who is unapologetically perfect, is so insane,” gushed Rapp, who at the time said Kesha was one of the artists “who shaped who I was as a kid, and made me want to be sexy, and funny, and exciting, and outrageous, and loud and, most of all, really f—ing sexy.”

“Tik Tok” was first released in 2009 and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 2010, spending nine weeks at No. 1.
