How FloyyMenor & Cris MJ Made Chart History With Their Out-of-Nowhere Hit ‘Gata Only’

Two weeks ago, FloyyMenor and Cris MJ made history as the first Chileans to enter the top 10 on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart since La Ley and Ednita Nazario’s “Tu Sabes Bien” did so 25 years ago. The only other Chilean artist to have reached similar heights was Myriam Hernández with 1998’s “Huele a Peligro,” which peaked at No. 5. This week, the emerging pair catapulted to No. 1, dethroning Xavi’s months-long reign with “La Diabla.”

The song making waves is “Only Gata,” a sly reggaetón number about online flirtation. According to Luminate, the viral track registered 11.11 million official U.S. streams, a 33% gain from the previous week. That landed them a No. 34 debut on the Streaming Songs chart and gave them a second week atop the Latin Streaming Songs chart. “Gata Only” also occupies No. 48 on the Hot 100. Last week it was at No. 74.

But how did two relatively unknown Chilean artists manage to not only break through on the global music scene but also clinch the top spot on the Hot Latin Songs chart? The success story begins with some strategic planning, innovative marketing and a dash of serendipity.

Trending on Billboard

Initially, FloyyMenor was a mysterious figure circulating online who had scored a few local hits. His identity was obscured and the art on his early YouTube releases was composed of car imagery, never revealing his face. “You needed to go to the nightclubs to see him,” says Adrian Mainou, artist marketing manager of Latin/U.S. at UnitedMasters.

The Latin team at UnitedMasters had been monitoring the Chilean music scene, having signed Nicko G over two years ago and being fans of Paloma Mami and Polimá Westcast. When the company’s Latin A&R lead, Gerardo Mejía — a music veteran with 30 years of experience and a former rapper/singer originally from Ecuador — began scouting the country’s music scene in the summer of 2023, he encountered FloyyMenor performing live and was captivated by the young artist’s unique appeal and the audience’s enthusiastic response.

“This kid was packing venues [with audiences] singing lyric after lyric,” recalls Mejía. At the time, FloyyMenor’s big local hit was “pa la europa,” while “Gata Only” was just a song people knew from his live shows and online teasers. Eager to sign the promising talent, Mejía had to wait until Floyy turned 18 in December.

After the signing, UnitedMasters released “Gata Only” in December — and the song began gaining traction within the first week and a half of its release. Not long after, Cris MJ — a Chilean act who had gained recognition from Karol G’s remix of “Una Noche en Medellín” featured in Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season) — reached out to Floyy, expressing his love for the song and his desire to be part of it.

As Mejía recalls: “When I got back to Chile in January, [Floyy] called me and said, ‘Cris MJ loves the song.’ I said, ‘Cool. We’ll do the remix.’ He said, ‘No. He loves the song so much he wants to be the original.’ I was like, ‘My brother, if Cris MJ calls you, then get on it with their teams and go record.’ We pulled down the original and waited maybe two weeks before we released it [on Feb. 2] with Cris MJ, and the rest is history.”

In a conversation with Billboard, Mejía and Mainou provided an in-depth look at the strategic rise of “Gata Only” to the top of the Hot Latin Songs chart. See below for the full interview.

The accomplishment alone as the first Chilean acts to make the top 10 of the Hot Latin Songs chart in 25 years is already very impressive, then to top the chart at No. 1. How does that happen?

Adrian Mainou: It was a very interesting and entertaining build up. [After we officially released it], we saw social growth and began working with a press team in Chile. It was a no-brainer to see the movement on TikTok and that we needed to lean into this. So I activated the first phase of influencers with Kono Sur [marketing y diseño]. We pushed [the song] in Chile, Argentina, and Ecuador, and we were able to see a lot of reactions on YouTube from those countries. Once we saw that, we had Floyy go to Argentina and do some shows while pushing press and [involving] influencers. For an artist coming out of Chile, having the Argentina push is a very cool look; it’s a very important country to connect with. For Floyy, it was pretty easy. He loves Argentinian culture. He got in on a Monday, did a show that same Tuesday, and by Thursday it was No. 1 on Spotify Argentina.

[Publicist] Cris Nova then joins the team [and he] was able to paint the narrative with press across socials, streaming and [seeing] the bigger perspective. At this point, we activate a second phase of influencers in Mexico, who helped us create more noise. [Mexico is] the third country in his top demographic at the moment.

Activating influencers. Please explain.

Mainou: We looked at lip-synching which fueled social media content. Then we looked into dance challenges. This is where we can start connecting with other countries and going global. We moved from lip-synching to the dance challenge [because] we knew it’s an easier thing for people in other countries to tap into.

We saw a couple of fan [pages] chiming into this. It was key to leverage from this and create new [dance challenges]. We were like, “Let’s take advantage of that and work with them.” We collaborated with fan accounts on TikTok, being like, “Yo, let’s work together. Put this [song] up.” At the end of the day, it’s content that they’re pushing on an organic level.

Once we got into Mexico, it was a no-brainer to start activating DJs for the song. We did that across Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Miami, targeting different demographics. We were able to get data on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. That puts us on this new level, and the song started translating into the U.S., and it was going crazy in the U.S.

FloyyMenor is a relatively unknown artist. What is your thought process when attempting to break an unknown act into the U.S.?

Mainou: This is an independent artist, so I don’t have a lot of money. How can we take advantage of what we’re doing? I connected with the digital team to give me Mexico influencers [whose] second-biggest demographic is in the U.S. With that mindset, I can pay for the influencer Mexico fee. Then it caught U.S. growth; [Mexican influencers] have a very strong presence in U.S. Latin culture. That can cover almost every big Latin influencer in the U.S. doing the song without us having to pay. We saw the song growing to almost 20 million streams on Apple, and from that a large portion came from the U.S. That took me into this current new position where I’m starting to push specifically the U.S. The song is already here, and we know it’s [playing] in nightclubs, people doing remixes, and the DSPs are supporting. He’s gotten [on] pretty much every single cover [of official playlists on] DSPs, and social support. We’ve seen artists [using] the audio [on social media], from Kenia Os to Shadi and Malu Trevejo…as well as Trapeton, Trap House Latino, etc.

Why do you think “Gata Only” is resonating with the masses?

Mejía: The lyrics talk about TikTok, about likes, about following. I think that he hit something that resonates with the kids. To top it off, it’s such a great melody. And having Cris MJ never hurts.

Mainou: The sound is very particular. I’ve become a very big fan of the Chilean sound from “Ultra Solo” [by Polimá Westcoast and Paloma Mami] a couple years ago, and from working with Nicko G. I think the production is very Chilean, [combined] with very good vocals and great analogies.

What is UnitedMasters doing different than other management and agency companies?

Mejía: At UnitedMasters, our mission is to be a tool for the artists and get them wherever they wanna get. We work with independent artists, and that has some challenges around it. Not all of them have managers, nor friends that can make them music videos; not all of them have a studio that they can record music at. We sat down with Floyy, we were able to not only get to know him but make him look at the bigger picture. We told him, “This is what we can do with you if you trust us, if you listen to us. This is where we can take you.” It’s about sitting down with the artists, understanding their needs, and being able to make a plan around it, creating a timeline.

Lil Wayne Makes Hilarious Cameo in Chris Rock-Narrated NBA Playoffs Ad

NBA superfan Lil Wayne makes a surprise cameo in a new Chris Rock-narrated ad for the 2024 NBA playoffs. The one-minute spot that dropped a day before the play-in tournament round kicked off is premised on the notion that most A-list NBA players don’t even think the playoffs are “a thing.”

It opens with a reporter asking Jayson Tatum if “playoff Jayson” is a thing, with the Celtics forward dropping his head and saying, “nah,” as an on-screen headline reads: “Tatum denies ‘Playoff Jayson’ is a thing” in the spot titled “Playoff Mode.”

“Playoff Jayson is not a thing,” he says sternly at a fake press conference. “Okay, Tatum, we all know it’s a thing,” Rock interjects in his patented clipped delivery over a shot of Tatum throwing down a monster dunk. “Just ask Playoff Spida,” Rock says as Cavs shooting guard Donovan “Spida” Mitchell drops his head and denies it’s a thing.

Trending on Billboard

Similarly, Rock gets a “not a thing” from Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, Bucks guard Damian Lillard, Nuggets Center Nikola Jokić and Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who denies the playoffs’ existence while doing pull-ups with a ridiculously heavy weight vest. Lillard is so annoyed at Rock’s suggestion that it’s time to finally see “Playoff Giannis [Antetokounmpo] play with Playoff Dame,” that Lillard angrily rips off the “Playoff” tag slapped up over his locker.

“Not a thing,” Lillard says.

And finally, Rock goes to the man who would know the best if it is playoff season: Lil Wayne. “Playoff Tunechi knows it’s a thing,” the comedian says over a shot of glasses-wearing Weezy concentrating really hard at a claw machine game. “It’s game time!” Wayne says as he tries, and fails, to grab an NBA player plushy from the machine. The camera then swings to a front-row shot of some celebs taking in a playoff game, including chef Guy Fieri and Puerto Rican superstar Anuel AA.

But when Rock says “even Chuck’s playoff jokes are funnier,” NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal shuts that down quickly, as he scribbles a mustache and glasses on a headshot of fellow hall of famer and broadcaster Charles Barkley. “No they are not,” Shaq says pointedly.

The playoffs, a real thing, continue on Friday (April 19) with Chicago vs. Miami at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN and Sacramento vs. New Orleans at 9:30 p.m. ET on TNT, with the first round of the playoffs scheduled to kick off on Saturday (April 20).

Travis Barker Posts Adorable Pic of Baby Rocky Snuggling With Kourtney Kardashian on Her Birthday

Travis Barker celebrated wife Kourtney Kardashian Barker’s 45th birthday on Thursday (April 18) by sharing some sweet (and one pretty salty) pics of his beloved, as well as one of the first glimpses of the couple’s adorable 5-month-old son, Rocky Thirteen Barker.

The Instagram pics included a rare image of the little guy, caught snuggling nose-to-nose with Kardashian in bed while wearing a striped onesie. And while we don’t see the baby’s face, the beaming look of love on Kardashian’s face says it all.

“Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife, soulmate and best friend forever,” Barker wrote. “I love you, I love our life together. Thank you for being the most amazing wife a person could ask for. Here’s to many more years of adventures together ❤️‍?”

The passel of pics opened with a shot of the couple canoodling on a boat in the ocean, kissing before boarding a private plane (with Barker swaddling Rocky in his arms), another of Kardashian standing on her bed in front of a series of white picture frames, as well as snaps of her fully asleep mid crossword puzzle, a pantsless pic of KK opening a gift, a few throwback shots of Kourtney smiling and sticking out her tongue and a final shot of her on the toilet.

Barker and Blink-182 just finished a run of dates in Australia/New Zealand and a run of festivals in South America. After a few months off they will kick off the North American run of their tour, slated to open on June 20 at the Kia Center in Orlando. That run of gigs will keep them on the road through an August 15 show at Rogers Center in Toronto before it moves to Europe for a run of festival and arena dates.

7 Best Moments From Phish’s Las Vegas Sphere Residency Kick-Off

On Thursday night (April 18), for the first time, a band not named U2 performed at the Las Vegas Sphere. Phish shares some traits with the Irish group – both are quartets with decades-long histories of concert production experimentation who remain major live draws – but the revered Vermont jam band still had something to prove as it kicked off a four-night run at the cutting-edge Sin City venue: How would an act known for its exploratory improvisation navigate a daunting visual space that on its face might seem more suited for tightly planned productions like U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere, which remained relatively static throughout its 40-show run?

The answer was straightforward. Phish was Phish. Across three-and-a-half hours and two sets of music, singer-guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, keyboardist Page McConnell, and drummer Jon Fishman seemed relatively unphased by the eye-popping animations darting across the 160,000-square-foot Sphere screen above them – at least, other than when Anastasio remarked to the crowd halfway through Phish’s first set that they “should see it this way, it’s pretty cool!” – and instead focused on delivering quality versions of jam vehicles old (“Tweezer”) and new (“Life Saving Gun”).

Of course, fans in attendance had much more to process than at a normal Phish show. Each of the setlist’s 18 songs featured a different animation, ranging from kooky graphics to abstract patterns, and Sphere Immersive Sound rendered the band’s audio in new, novel ways. An audio recording might sound like another present-day Phish show; the sensory experience in the room was anything but.

Still, as Abigail Rosen Holmes, the co-creative director for Phish’s Sphere shows, told Billboard earlier this week, “We’re going to use all of the opportunities of this building – the audio, the visuals – and do it while supporting Phish truly playing music the way Phish plays music.” Phish’s first Sphere show largely accomplished that, pushing boundaries without letting that interfere with the music-making at hand.

Billboard was on the scene, and we’ve rounded up the best moments below.

Further down the ARIA Chart, published late Friday, is Linkin Park’s fourth compilation Papercuts (Warner), new at No. 7. The nu-metal favorites have previously led the national tally with 2000’s Hybrid Theory, 2007’s Minutes To Midnight and 2010’s A Thousand Suns.

Also new to the national survey is We Still Don’t Trust You (Universal/Sony), the second collaborative album from Future and Metro Boomin. It’s new at No. 15, and the followup to We Still Don’t Trust You, which recently bowed at No. 2.

Over on the ARIA Singles Chart, Hozier bags his first No. 1 with “Too Sweet” (Columbia/Sony), up 2-1.
“Too Sweet” is Hozier’s second top 10 appearance on the Australian chart after his signature song “Take Me To Church” reached No. 2 back in 2013. “Too Sweet” also lifted to No. 1 in the U.K. earlier this month, for Hozier’s first leader there.

According to ARIA, Hozier is the fourth solo male singer to reach the top this year on the Australian chart, following U.S. artists Jack Harlow (“Lovin On Me”), Noah Kahan (“Stick Season”) and Benson Boone (“Beautiful Things”).

“Beautiful Things” (via Warner) dips 1-2 on the latest frame, while British EDM producer Artemas holds onto third spot with “I Like The Way You Kiss Me” (10K/ADA).

The top new debut on the ARIA Singles Chart belongs to U.S. pop singer and actor Sabrina Carpenter, whose “Espresso” shoots in at No. 7. “Espresso” (Island/Universal) is the follow-up to “Feather,” which peaked at No. 22 in 2023.

Also appearing for the first time on the ARIA Chart is Dua Lipa’s “Illusion” (Warner UK), new at No. 21.
“Illusion” is the third single from the British pop star’s forthcoming third studio album Radical Optimism, following “Houdini” (No. 7 peak) and “Training Session” (No. 12).

Her Tortured Poets Spotify library installation in Los Angeles featured a peace-sign statuette, and Swift herself flashed two fingers on camera at the 2024 Grammys when she first announced her new record. The clocks at the library pop-up and in her cryptic “Fortnight” music video announcement from earlier this week have all been set to 2 o’clock, and the star tweeted Wednesday, “✌️days til THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT.”

Swift’s stamina is hard to beat. Tortured Poets is her fifth studio album in less than five years, a period that has also included four re-recorded Taylor’s Version albums. So, make that nine full length recordings since the months prior to the pandemic. Her epic The Eras Tour is currently on a break, and will restart next month for a summer stadium run across the U.K. and Europe.

TayTay announced The Tortured Poets Department at the 2024 Grammy Awards in February, where she won album of the year for a record fourth time, with Midnights, her 10th studio effort. In the same month, Swift collected the IFPI’s Global Recording Artist award for a fourth time, also a record.

Dropping at the stroke of midnight, Dark Matter (via Monkeywrench Records/Republic Records) spans 11 (mostly) burly numbers, including the previously-released midtempo cut “Wreckage” and the title track, which powered to No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay and Rock & Alternative Airplay Charts.

Grammy Award-winning producer Andrew Watt is back behind the desk on Dark Matter, built on foundations of blazing guitars and busy drumming, and which ought to be played “loud, like, really loud,” frontman Eddie Vedder told Alt 98.7.

Trending on Billboard

Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, recognition of a mighty, three-decade-plus career that has yielded 12 top 10s on the Billboard 200 chart, including five leaders, and over 85 million albums shifted worldwide, according to reps.

The members of Pearl Jam—Vedder, Jeff Ament (bass), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Matt Cameron (drums)—workshopped the album last year at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu. With Watt at the desk, the creative process found turbo-packs, and the record came together in three weeks.

Vedder, McCready, and Ament premiered the LP at a listening party in West Hollywood earlier this year, attended by a few hundred family, friends, industry professionals and media, the Associated Press reported at the time.

“You all get together as a group as we’ve been doing for 30-plus years and you say, ‘Let’s try it again,’” Vedder reportedly told guests from the stage as he introduced the record. “No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.”

In support of the new LP, Vedder and CO. will embark on a world tour. Those Dark Matter World Tour 2024 dates will see the band visit nine countries and 25 cities, kicking off at May 4 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC.

In its 18th week on the Hot 100, “FTCU” sits at No. 79 after peaking at No. 15. The Pink Friday 2 track should receive a chart boost thanks to the “Sleeze Mix.”

Minaj and Chris Brown have an extensive collaborative history as they’ve teamed up for tracks like DJ Khaled’s “Take It to the Head,” 2012’s “Right By My Side,” Breezy’s “Love More,” 2014’s “Only” with Drake and Lil Wayne as well as Meek Mill’s “All Eyes on You” and Khaled’s “Do you Mind” in 2016.

Nicki lent Sexyy Red a major co-sign when hopping on the remix to her “Pound Town” hit last year to give the St. Louis native her first Hot 100 entry.

However, this marks the first team-up for Minaj and Travis Scott. La Flame and the “Super Bass” rapper appear to have squashed their feud. Nicki put Scott and his family on blast in 2018 for selling merchandise bundles with his ASTROWORLD album to block Minaj’s Queen from taking the top spot on the Billboard 200.

Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 World Tour continues this weekend with stops in Toronto and Detroit.

Hardy Serves Up A Cover of Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre’s ‘Gin and Juice’: Stream It Now

Why take your gin straight when you can have it with a side of Hardy? In honor of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre‘s new Gin & Juice canned cocktail venture, the country-rock star released a cover of the hip-hop duo’s classic “Gin and Juice” on Friday (April 19), with a music video to follow next month.

“A while back, I got a phone call saying that Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg would like for me to record my own version of ‘Gin and Juice’ for the launch of their new drink, Gin&Juice,” Hardy revealed in a press release. “I’m still in disbelief, but I am so stoked that I’m dropping my version of ‘Gin and Juice’ with the blessing of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg themselves. Thankful for the opportunity.”

The “Give Heaven Some Hell” singer first teased the cover on Thursday (April 18) with an Instagram post featuring a flick of him posing with the two hip-hop legends. The three artists appeared to be on the set of a forthcoming “short film” tied to Gin & Juice.

Hardy’s “Gin and Juice” cover comes after a string of hits for the CMA-nominated star. In 2023, he notched his first No. 1 title on Top Country Albums with The Mockingbird & the Crow, which housed “Truck Bed,” his first unaccompanied Country Airplay chart-topper. This year, Hardy turned his attention to the rock scene with recent releases “Quit!!” and “Rockstar” peaking at No. 2 and No. 1 on Hot Hard Rock Songs, respectively. Both tracks are set to appear on his upcoming rock album.

Snoop Dogg’s original Dr. Dre-produced version of “Gin and Juice” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1994 (chart dated March 26, 1994). The track — which earned a Grammy nod for best rap solo performance — served as the second single from Snoop’s Billboard 200-topping debut studio album, Doggystyle.

As soon as the pop star’s 16-track project dropped at midnight on Friday (April 19), Swift made her very first post on Threads, Instagram’s text-only counterpart which launched last year. At the same time, a mysterious two-hour countdown went live on her Instagram page, potentially ticking down to a new announcement or surprise coming at 2 a.m. ET.

The new countdown is sure to pique the interests of Swifties, who have noticed that the musician has seemingly been teasing the number 2 for weeks.

Only time will tell what 2 a.m brings — but in the meantime, Instagram and Threads have several other new features for Swifties to enjoy. Fans can now change their direct messaging backgrounds to visuals inspired by the Tortured Poets album artwork; plus, Threads users who share the singer’s first post will receive a custom “TTPD” badge on their profile, distinguishing them as bona fide Swifties.

In the week leading up to Tortured Poets release day, Instagram launched its original secret countdown, which was only visible when fans pulled down on Swift’s profile to “refresh.” The countdown also prompted viewers to follow the 14-time Grammy winner on Threads.

As this was going on, conversations on Threads tagged #TTPD, #The Tortured Poets Department, #Tortured Poets, #TSTTPD, #Swifties or #Taylor Swift prompted a special shimmer effect to appear, while celebratory hearts appeared onscreen for those who “liked” a post stamped with any of the same tags.

Complete with 16 tracks, four bonus songs spread out across various deluxe versions and collaborations with Post Malone and Florence + The Machine, The Tortured Poets Department was one of the most anticipated releases of 2024. Swift took a break from her global Eras Tour to prepare for the album’s release but will resume the trek in May.

“It kind of reminded me of why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life,” she said of the project at a February Eras show. “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on Tortured Poets.”
