Artemas’ ‘I Like the Way You Kiss Me’ & Hozier’s ‘Too Sweet’ Top Billboard Global Charts

Artemas’s “I Like the Way You Kiss Me” rises to No. 1 the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and Hozier’s “Too Sweet” ascends to the top of the Billboard Global 200, marking each act’s first leader on each respective ranking.

Plus, FloyyMenor and Cris Mj’s “Gata Only” reaches the top five of both charts and Sabrina Carpenter earns her first Global 200 top 10 as “Espresso” debuts at No. 10.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which began in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Trending on Billboard

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

Artemas Seals No. 1 on Global Excl. U.S. With a ‘Kiss’

Artemas’ first Billboard Global Excl. U.S. hit, “I Like the Way You Kiss Me,” rises to No. 1, from No. 2, with 65.9 million streams (up 15%) and 3,000 sold (up 45%) outside the U.S., boosted by the April 12 premiere of its official video, in the week ending April 18.

The breakthrough hit for the English-Cypriot artist, released on Artemas/10K Projects, has been used in nearly 2 million clips on TikTok, where he teased the song prior to its March 19 release.

Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” drops to No. 2 after eight nonconsecutive weeks atop the Global Excl. U.S. chart; ILLIT’s “Magnetic” holds at No. 3, after reaching No. 2; FloyyMenor and Cris Mj’s “Gata Only” advances 6-4, becoming the first top five hit on the chart for both Chilean artists; and Hozier’s “Too Sweet” bumps 7-5, likewise marking his first top five entry since the list began.

Hozier ‘Sweet’-ens Top of Global 200

Hozier’s “Too Sweet” climbs to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Global 200, with 76.1 million streams (up 7%) and 9,000 sold (down 4%) worldwide April 12-18.

The singer-songwriter is the first Irish act to top the Global 200. “Too Sweet,” released on Rubyworks/Columbia Records, was first widely heard via a teaser snippet during his March 6 appearance on the How Long Gone podcast, ahead of its proper release March 22 on his four-track EP Unheard.

Artemas’ “I Like the Way You Kiss Me” climbs 3-2 for a new Global 200 high; Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” retreats to No. 3 following seven nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1; FloyyMenor and Cris Mj’s “Gata Only” charges 10-4, becoming the first top five hit on the tally for both acts (up 26% to 75 million streams worldwide); and Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” lifts 7-5, after hitting No. 4.

Plus, Sabrina Carpenter serves up her first Global 200 top 10 as “Espresso” debuts at No. 10. Released April 12, it drew 46.2 million streams and sold 6,000 worldwide in its first week. The bow follows the singer-songwriter and actress’s performances at both weekends of this year’s Coachella festival. She previously supported Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour for 30 dates from last August through March.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated April 27, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, April 23. For both charts, the top 100 titles are available to all readers on Billboard.com, while the complete 200-title rankings are visible on Billboard Pro, Billboard’s subscription-based service. Tems Announces ‘Love Me Jeje’ Single After Debuting It at Coachella

Tems announced her new single “Love Me Jeje” on Monday (April 22), and it’s arriving sooner than you think.

“Love Me Jeje” will be available Friday, April 26. She performed it for the first time during weekend one of Coachella, where she coached the crowd through the “Love me jeje, love me tender” chorus.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Seyi Sodimu — who released his hit “Love Me Jeje” featuring Shafy Bello in 1997 — shared a video of Tems performing her song at Coachella on Instagram last week. “This made my day. The beautiful thing about music is that it transcends generations and connects us through time. Shoutout to Tems and her team, and congrats on a wonderful Coachella performance,” he wrote.

During her weekend one Coachella set, Tems had another surprise up her sleeve: She brought out Wizkid and Justin Bieber to perform their Billboard Hot 100 No. 9 smash “Essence.”

“Love Me Jeje” is the first single to be released after the Nigerian singer-songwriter-producer announced her debut album, Born in the World, would arrive in May. She released two singles at the end of last year, “Me & U” and “Not an Angel,” which both reached No. 3 on Billboard‘s U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart. She performed “Not an Angel” for the first time at Billboard Women in Music in March. Tems also received the Breakthrough Award from Savannah James.

“One thing that’s uniquely special to me is that I’m in a room full of amazing women and I’m standing with a continent behind me, I’m standing with the people behind me, and it makes me feel like I’m part of something just being in this room,” Tems said in her speech.

Nicki Minaj Deflects a Bracelet Hurled on Stage by a Fan & Throws It Right Back: Watch

There’s been an alarming trend rising in music concerts: Fans feeling bold enough to throw items on stage while artists are performing. Nicki Minaj was one of the latest victims while she was on stage during the Pink Friday 2 World Tour stop in Detroit on Saturday (April 20).

In the midst of performing her “Starships” anthem, Minaj tracked a bracelet hurling in her direction from the audience. She showcased some athletic ability like an NFL cornerback, and put her hand-eye coordination to use to swat the accessory aside.

Trending on Billboard

The object thrown at the Queens icon clearly annoyed her. She picked it up and wound up like a baseball pitcher before fiercely launching it back where it came from into the audience.

However, she didn’t let the incident take away from her fun throughout the concert. “#GagCityDetroit what was your fave part of the show last night? Your energy was so beautiful,” she wrote on X following the show. “Loud, Happy, Fly, Pretty, SEXY, etc. just GREAT energy that I’ll never forget.”

Drake is one of the many rappers that has had to deal with fans throwing things on stage. Last year, during a Detroit show while out on his It’s All A Blur Tour, women were throwing bras among other items on stage.

“This not what we wanna see, a big-a– shoe. This what I need you to do, Detroit, this what I need to you do, please, for me. I’m so grateful to be back in this building with you after all this time that we had to sit in the crib, right,” he said. “Please stop throwing bras up here, I can’t — I feel like I’m on clean-up duty tonight … T–ty clean-up duty. This is crazy.”

Minaj continues with her Pink Friday 2 World Tour this week with a pair of Chicago shows and a Minneapolis date. On the music side, she delivered the star-studded “FTCU (Sleeze Mix)” featuring Travis Scott, Chris Brown and Sexyy Red on Friday (April 19).

Hipgnosis Song Management Fires Back at Songs Fund Board: ‘Will Vigorously Protect [Our] Interests’

Hipgnosis Song Management (HSM), the investment advisor for the troubled music royalty fund Hipgnosis Songs Fund that has come under scrutiny for its handling of accounting issues, released a statement Monday (April 22) saying it has “repeatedly been blamed for many issues affecting the [Songs Fund] which were not HSM’s responsibility” and that it “will vigorously protect its interests should the [Songs Fund board] purport to terminate” it as investment advisor.

The statement comes after a wave of headlines in the past month dating back to the March 28 release of a report by Shot Tower Capital which alleged that HSM, as investment advisor for Hipgnosis Songs Fund — which owns full or partial rights to song catalogs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira and Neil Young, among others — overstated its revenues, the scope of its assets and its earnings in disclosures to investors and regulators. That followed a vote last October in which shareholders first rejected a proposed sale of some of the fund’s song catalog and a subsequent vote of no to continuation — the equivalent of a vote of no confidence — in the fund’s previous board and its investment advisor HSM, prompting the formation of a new board with a new chairman, Rob Naylor. (Merck Mercuriadis, the founder of the fund, moved from CEO of HSM to chairman in February.)

Trending on Billboard

In the past few days, two potential takeover bids have been submitted to the board of Hipgnosis Songs Fund: one from Concord at $1.4 billion and the other from Blackstone, which is the majority owner of HSM, at $1.5 billion. The initial Concord bid suggested that the publishing company would take over management of the fund’s catalog from HSM, which would require 12 months’ written notice; a fee equal to one year of services; and, at the end of that year, allowing HSM to exercise a call option to buy the portfolio’s assets by outbidding any competing offer, according to previous filings.

In the new statement, HSM indicates that it would exercise that call option if it becomes necessary.

“Based on extensive legal advice we are confident that the [Songs Fund] has no legal grounds to terminate our relationship without being subject to HSM’s contractual rights contained in the [investment advisory agreement, or IAA],” Hipgnosis Songs Management’s statement reads. “HSM has explained this in detailed legal correspondence with the [fund]. The [fund] has not responded to HSM on the legal arguments it has presented.

“HSM will vigorously protect its interests should the [fund] purport to terminate the IAA,” the statement continues. “We will use all means necessary to defend our contractual position and interests. It is important that shareholders, songwriters and artists understand that HSM has acted appropriately and professionally in our role as Investment Advisor and fully in accordance with the IAA.

“To be clear, were the [fund] to purport to terminate the IAA and/or hand HSM’s responsibilities under the IAA to a third party, HSM and its majority shareholder are fully resolved to protect all of our rights under the IAA, including the right to exercise the call option to acquire the [fund]’s assets.”

Earlier today, the board of Hipgnosis Songs Fund said that, were Blackstone to officially file its $1.5 billion bid to take over the company, it would support that option over the Concord bid from last week. And given Blackstone’s majority ownership of HSM, it would presumably follow that HSM would then continue in its role as investment advisor, meaning HSM would not have to exercise its call option in the end. The Blackstone bid is effectively the same as the call option.

Further bids may still arise as the situation continues to unfold. The next step would be a June 10 meeting in which shareholders would vote on approval of any bid that formally comes in.

Regallily Share How Being Women Influenced Their 10-Year Career: Billboard Japan Women in Music Interview

The members of the band Regallily chatted with writer Rio Hirai for the latest installment of Billboard Japan’s Women in Music interview series featuring female players in the Japanese entertainment industry. The WIM initiative in Japan launched in 2022 to celebrate artists, producers and executives who have made significant contributions to music and inspired other women through their work.

Regallily recently released “Kirakira no Hai” (“Twinkling Ash”), the ending theme of Delicious in Dungeon Season 2. Currently a two-woman unit, the band was originally formed by frontwoman and guitarist Honoka Takahashi while in high school. Bassist Umi later joined and the band is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Regallily has just wrapped its tour of small clubs in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka as a means of returning to their roots. In this interview, the two members looked back on their career as a “girl band,” and spoke about what they’re looking forward to now after going through a period of identity moratorium as described in the lyrics of their song “17.”

Congratulations on your 10th anniversary. Honoka, you formed the band when you were in high school. Did you plan on continuing the band for a long time from the outset?

Trending on Billboard

Honoka Takahashi: When I formed the band, I wasn’t thinking that far to be honest. I didn’t even have a goal in mind. Before Regallily, I was in a band with male members, but didn’t fit in well with them. I ended up leaving because they told me they were going to play with only guys. We were only in tenth grade or thereabouts and I suppose it was normal to treat people of opposite sex like outsiders… But it pissed me off and I thought, “I’ll form a band with just girls then!” [Laughs

Umi: I’ve also played in bands since high school, in a pop music club at the time. There weren’t too many guys so I’ve always been in bands with girls. I never gave much thought about being in bands with only women before joining Regallily, but it was probably easier for me to imagine myself as a member of this band than joining one with male members.

Some of the artists we’ve spoken to in this series say they feel uncomfortable being categorized by titles such as “girls” or “female” (as English loanwords, e.g. “girl band,” “female rapper”). How do you feel about being called a “girl band”?

Takahashi: I didn’t think anything of it at first. But later, a band came along that publicly stated it didn’t want to be referred to as a girl band, which helped me see that there are people who don’t like being called that.

Umi: I mean, it’s a fact that these are bands run by women, but compared to rock or punk, the (genre) classification is a bit sloppy, don’t you think? [Laughs] There are genres within all-female bands, so when a playlist is made by categorizing them as “girl bands,” for example, I wonder if it’s possible to reach the core of those acts. I don’t have a negative impression of the term itself, and I’m sure there were events we were able to play in because of that categorization.

Takahashi: I’m accustomed to the term “girl band,” but when you think about it, “girls” means children. Since men and women have different voices, I get wanting to divide them into different groups, but I’m not sure “girls” is appropriate when all of our life stages change in the future.

SCANDAL was certified last year as the “longest running rock band with the same musicians (female)” by the Guinness World Records after 17 years together, which links to the topic of the difficulty of female bands staying in the business for a long time. Is there anything you take care to do to keep doing what you do for a long time and in a healthy way?

Takahashi: I’ve basically never really understood what common sense is ever since I was a kid. My life has been detached from what’s considered the norm, things like, “husbands go to work and wives stay at home to do housework.” If I ever get pregnant, I’d like to sing (on stage) until the very last minute. I’ve seen (singer-songwriter) Seiko Omori standing on stage during late-stage pregnancy and wondered if I could do it too.

Umi: Pregnancy is something you can’t understand until it happens. I’m looking forward to it. I wonder how much I can take on while pregnant. I’m 25 years old now, and I’ve been thinking about how my life stage will change and that I’ll have to face various things in the future. When I discover new sides of myself, for example as a wife after I get married, or as a mother after I have a baby… I think about how I’ll be able to balance those things when my identity isn’t just as an artist anymore.

I guess our late twenties is when we begin to feel the reality of changing life stages. You released a single called “17″ in January, and that age is also a period when we sense various changes in our lives. Why did you focus on 17?

Takahashi: I turn 27 this year, so 17 was about 10 years ago. I used to listen to a lot of songs that had seventeen as a keyword in them when I was that age, and have a number of favorites. I was thinking of writing a song called “17” when I was 17, but just couldn’t do it when I was in the midst of it all. At around 26 years old, it felt like I gradually came to understand what I was like at that time and what kind of person I am. So now, ten years on, I looked back on those days and put it into words and the music was born.

Umi: I used to go to music clubs quite a bit back then. It was also a period when I was so full of myself and so self-conscious that I was embarrassed about a lot of things and couldn’t enjoy myself. The time I spent going to music clubs alone and being the person only I knew about was my anchor.

This question is one of the themes of this interview series, but how do you think being a woman affects your music career and life in general?

Takahashi: I recently realized that I’m really at the whim of hormone imbalances in life. There are times I need to take care of myself, and the more I take care of myself, the more I can take care of my work. But on the other hand, there are times when my nature makes me want to do something dangerous. Like going somewhere that’s super cold. [Laughs] Taking such risks puts a strain on my body and my hormones go out of whack as a result, so sometimes I wish I had a body that could be more reckless.

Umi: Even just to live normally and safely, you have to be tough when you’re a woman. Like choosing an apartment to live in, if you want safety and require a place on the second floor or higher that has a self-locking system, it costs more money.

Takahashi: In terms of bands, I look at the careers of the generation above us, like (Japanese rock band) Chatmonchy, and think about what we can and can’t do.

But there aren’t many precedents for all-female bands compared to male bands, so if we can set more examples, it might become easier (for the next generation). Even now, I’m sure many female bands are being born.

Umi: To be honest, there are parts (about male bands and artists) that I kind of envy, but we’ve been doing this for a long time too, and if there are people out there who think we’re cool the way we are, that’s how (our music) resonates and spreads.

Chris Brown Unleashes “Weakest Link” Diss Song At Quavo, X Dissects The Disrespect

Team Luda Vs Team Breezy Celebrity Basketball Game

Chris Brown and Quavo have a history of not being the best of friends and it appears that the pair are still on the path to war after this weekend. Chris Brown dropped a new track titled “Weakest Link” aimed at Quavo, with the late Takeoff having his name added to this feud.

From what we gathered, “Weakest Link” is a response to the track “Tender” and adds to the growing rift between the pair that has been ongoing for years according to reports.

On “Tender” Quavo rapped:

Wipin’ your nose with the tissue, not wipin’ no snot (Snot, whoo)
Tell me, lil’ bro, what’s your issue? It’s over a thot (Thot)
You said that it’s bigger than that (It’s big), but no, it is not (No, it is not)
It’s ’cause I be diggin’ in that (Ya dig?), it got ’em hot (They got ’em hot)
I’m givin’ respect (Sh*t), but I know you not (I know you not)
Your b*tch on my neck (Your b*tch), your b*tch at the spot (Spot)

The streets are saying that the Migos artist is speaking about Brown’s ex, Karrueche Tran.

Brown, digging deep into his petty bag, fired back by suggesting he got familiar with Huncho’s ex, Saweetie:

Okay, let’s get down to the facts, p*ssy, I’m dripped in red (Okay)
Don’t let this R&B sh*t fool you, n*ggas get ripped to shreds (Get back)
Quavo talkin’ like he a thug, n*gga, you a bitch with dreads (You a b*tch)
Can’t wait to see the day that you back up all of that sh*t you said (You on)
What’s all that boss sh*t you talkin’? You ain’t no huncho, n*gga (You ain’t no huncho)
You the weakest link out of your clique, let’s keep it a hundo, n*gga (One hundred)
You f*cked my ex-ho, that’s cool, I don’t give no f*ck, lil’ n*gga (Still a b*tch)
‘Cause I f*cked your ex when you were still with her, b*tch, I’m up, lil’ n*gga (I’m up)

We’ve got no opinion on who is winning this particular beef but fans observing are naturally calling out Brown’s violent past with women, while also adding that Quavo has similar stories of the same acts on his jacket.

Check out the reactions from X and the songs in question below.

Snoop Dogg Hilariously Reacts To His AI Appearance on Drake’s Kendrick Lamar Diss Track, “Taylor Made Freestyle”

Snoop Dogg Hilarious Reacts To His AI Bars On

Snoop Dogg has found his way into the current “beef” between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, and it had nothing to do with him actually interjecting himself in it but with the use of AI.

Like the rest of the Hip-Hop and music world, Snoop Dogg was stunned to hear AI voice on Drake’s latest diss track at Kendrick Lamer, “Taylor Made Freestyle.”

On Friday (April 19), Drake released his “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which features the computer-generated voices of Snoop Dogg and the late 2Pac “pressing” their West Coast counterpart to respond to Drizzy.

On the song virtual Snoop raps:

Dot, you know that the D-O-G never fucking doubted you/ But right now it seem like you posted up without a clue of what the fuck you ’bout to do.”

Not too long after the divisive record hit the internet, the Doggfather took to his Instagram account to post a hilarious reaction to AI bars.

“They did what? When? How? Are you sure? [Sigh] Y’all have a good night,” Snoop said in the Instagram clip. “Why everybody calling my phone, blowing me up? What the fuck— what happened? What’s going on? I’m going back to bed. Good night.”

Will Kendrick Lamar Finally Respond To Drake?

“Taylor Made Freestyle” comes a week after Drake’s first response record, “Push Ups.” When the song hit the internet, thanks to the rampant AI use in the music industry, the song’s validity was initially up in the air.

On the song, Drizzy accuses Lamar of taking his sweet time to respond due to Taylor Swift dropping a new album while also naming TDE’s boss,  Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith.

But now we gotta wait a fucking week ’cause Taylor Swift is your new Top/ And if you ’bout to drop, she gotta approve/ This girl really ’bout to make you act like you not in a feud/ She tailor made your schedule with Ant, you out of the loop.

While Drake continues to poke the bear, word on the podcast streets is that K.Dot has a response record ready, according to Joe Budden Podcast host Antwan “Ish” Marby, who claims the record is on the level of 2Pac’s “Hit Em Up.”

“Some people that have heard the Kendrick track, I heard that his energy is just something that’s going to be hard for Drake to match. They said he’s coming on some Pac’ Hit Em Up’ energy,” Ish claims.

We shall see if that’s the case. We just want Kendrick Lamar to take his time and deliver a worthy response, no one wants a wack a** diss record.

Bryan made a swift recovery, and with his signature quick wit, turned it into a humorous moment, asking the crowd, “Did anybody get that?” before handing the phone back to its owner and joking, “My lawyer will be calling.”

He then gave the crowd an instant replay of the fall by holding a phone from another concert attendee who had recorded video of the fall, and having the concert’s cameraperson zoom in on the video, casting it on the big screens for all to see.

Bryan also joked to the audience, “Hey, I need some viral. This is viral, all right? This is viral!’ As the video played, he said, “All right, here we go again. There I am, there we go … there it is!”
