Post Malone Is Teaming Up With Michael Bay & Brad Fuller’s Platinum Dunes to Create a New IP Universe

Post Malone is expanding his creative bandwidth.

The “Sunflower” singer is teaming up with Vault Comics as well as Michael Bay and Brad Fuller’s Platinum Dunes to create a brand new IP universe based on an original story by Malone. The story is inspired by elements of “road thrillers like Mad Max: Fury Road and demonic horror like Evil Dead,” per a press release and will take place in medieval Europe, “where the only thing standing in the way of the horde of demons infesting the continent is a mysterious armored 18-wheeler seemingly sent back from the heavens.”

“I’m so pumped to share this badass story with the world, and I couldn’t ask for better partners than Michael Bay and Vault to help bring this story to life,” Post said in a press statement.

“I love working with talented people, and Post Malone is incredibly gifted,” added Bay. “I am excited to work with him on such an intriguing idea, and when you add Vault to the mix, it raises the bar to another level. This new IP is just what the graphic world needs right now.”

Vault will launch the first story of the universe as a graphic novel, set for release in 2025. Additionally, Post Malone, Platinum Dunes and Vault will concurrently develop a feature film adaptation.

It’s been an exciting 2024 so far for Post Malone, who is fresh off collaborating with Taylor Swift on “Fortnight,” the lead single off her 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department.

Willow Shares 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Her New Song ‘Big Feelings’ | Billboard News

Willow shares five things you didn’t know about her new single, “Big Feelings,” including the inspiration and personal connection behind it.

Willow:
Hey, this is Willow, and these are five things that you didn’t know about my new single, “Big Feelings.”

No. 1: I shot the visual at the same place that I shot “Transparent Soul,” which is actually really crazy.

No. 2: I made the song with two of my really, really good friends — beautiful musicians Zach Tenorio and Chris Greatti.

No. 3: The composition of the song took it took a good amount of time before I could get the lyrics on, before we even did any, you know, thinking about lyrics. There was mathematics. It was like that meme. You know what I’m saying, where there’s the math.

And then No. 4: The idea of “Big Feelings” — the song title — “big feelings” was in my head for, like, a week and a half. And I had had opportunities to record that song. And every time I had an opportunity, I was like, “No, it’s not the time. No, it’s not the time.”

No. 5: “Big Feelings” is my favorite song that I’ve ever recorded to this date. It’s the craziest song, the vocals, the specific, you know, the pocket that I’m in, and just the composition is, to me, it’s just one of the best compositions that I’ve I’ve ever sang on or yeah. It’s just I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it. And peace and love.

A Decade After Hozier’s Breakthrough, How Did ‘Too Sweet’ Become His First Hot 100 No. 1?

In a year where the big stars of the past decade have been coming out early to lay claim to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 — Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar, the entire Vultures crew — one 2010s hitmaker few saw coming as a top-spot threat scores his first-ever No. 1 on the chart this week.

Hozier, whose lone single to approach the top of the Hot 100 came in 2014 with the No. 2-peaking megaballad “Take Me to Church,” reaches No. 1 this week with TikTok-teased new single “Too Sweet” in its fourth week on the chart. The Irish singer-songwriter had maintained a sizable fanbase since the 2014 smash, but went the next eight years without reaching the Hot 100, until scoring a handful of entries in the lower stretches and one top 40 hit (via an appearance on the remix to Noah Kahan’s “Northern Attitude”) last year.

How did Hozier make his way not only back to the top 10, but all the way to the top spot? And what does this mean for his career going forward? Billboard staffers discuss these questions and more below.

Trending on Billboard

1. So straight off the top — if you were told at the beginning of 2024 that Hozier would have his first No. 1 hit by April, how surprised would you be, on a scale from 1 to 10?

Katie Atkinson: 10! Of course, watching the Hot 100 in the months since has definitely made it much less surprising, because we’ve seen TeddySwims score his first No. 1, we’ve seen Benson Boone climb to No. 2, and we’ve seen Noah Kahan peak in the top 10, so Hozier topping the chart is completely in line with all that. But knowing what we knew on Jan. 1, it had been 10 years since he broke through with “Take Me to Church” and he was still hanging around the Hot 100, but the closest he’d returned to his No. 2 peak with “Church” was to the top 40 last year with Kahan (more on that below). Clearly, his chart-topping moves were already in the works.

Stephen Daw: 10, easy. I loved Unreal Unearth and have been a big fan of Hozier’s since his self-titled debut LP in 2013 — but I genuinely thought “Take Me to Church” would be his chart ceiling. Even when “Too Sweet” began blowing up online, I figured, at best, it would float around the top 40 for a few months before dying back down. But I am delightfully shocked to see audiences really embrace Hozier again, especially on a song as undeniably good as “Too Sweet.”

Kyle Denis: About a 7. I had a feeling that whatever music Hozier came out with post-Unreal Unearth would do fairly well. That album did a lot to rejuvenate casual interest him beyond being pigeon-holed as the “Take Me to Chruch” guy.

Jason Lipshutz: A 7. Sure, Hozier hasn’t been churning out top 10 hits over the past few years, but he has accrued quite a following during that time — there’s a reason he was able to schedule an arena and amphitheater tour for later this year, before “Too Sweet” was even released. Plus, country- and folk-adjacent pop-rock has certainly invaded the upper reaches of the Hot 100 over the past six months, with artists like Noah Kahan, Zach Bryan, Teddy Swims and Benson Boone all scoring smashes with their respective versions of the guitar-based renaissance. So, yes, still surprising to see a Hozier single atop the Hot 100, but certainly far from jaw-dropping.

Andrew Unterberger: A 9 — and it would’ve been a 10 at the beginning of 2023, but after Hozier’s impressive last year and popular music generally tilting in the direction of his arena-sized alt-folk, a comeback moment of some kind certainly seemed like it could’ve been on the horizon. But a No. 1 hit, at this extremely competitive moment in Hot 100 history? No, I cannot pretend that I saw that coming in any way.

2. Hozier had not even reached the Hot 100 again for eight years following his 2014 smash “Take Me to Church,” then returned to the Hot 100 multiple times in the past year, though he had not gotten higher than No. 37 as a guest on Noah Kahan’s remixed “Northern Attitude.” Is him finally reaching No. 1 this year more of a function of overall timing or about “Too Sweet” in particular, in your opinion?

Katie Atkinson: I think timing is a piece of it, but this song is also undeniably great, so I’m going to give it to “Too Sweet.” The song has great lyrics, and you can discover a new cute phrase with every listen, and the way he lilts that chorus seems to put his not-quite-right partner’s sweetness into song. The combo of its easy-listening melody paired with lyrics we can all probably relate to makes for a hit.

Stephen Daw: It’s definitely more about “Too Sweet” itself, but the timing certainly doesn’t hurt. With the Noah Kahanaissance in full swing, contemporary folk music is having its biggest moment since the “stomp clap hey” days of the early 2010s, which is a huge opportunity for artists like Hozier who thrived in that aforementioned era. It’s abundantly clear that “Too Sweet” came in the perfect timeframe, but it’s worth noting that Hozier put out an entire album of folk songs in the middle of this sea change last year, and only “Eat Your Young” managed to crack into the lower half of the Hot 100 (debuting at No. 67 and then immediately falling off the chart two weeks later). Clearly, “Too Sweet” has that X factor that keeps people listening.

Kyle Denis: The success of “Too Sweet,” in particular, has more to do with where the sound of Top 40 is right now than anything else. Analog instrumentation with an emphasis on guitars and big, soaring vocals are in right now (see: Teddy Swims, Benson Boone, Michael Marcagi, Kahan) and Hozier happened to drop an absolute banger at just the right time. Between his incredibly successful Unreal Unearth tour and his countless appearances at festivals across the world, Hozier has enraptured a whole new audience whose ears have been primed for the pop-rock swagger of “Too Sweet” by the other guitar-centric tunes that have dominated the upper regions of the Hot 100 this year.

Jason Lipshutz: A combination of both. “Too Sweet” is pretty undeniable as a crossover hit, a smoky groove that relies on the deep timbre of Hozier’s voice to provide gravitas to its creeping hooks. Pop music trends helped push “Too Sweet” higher on the Hot 100 than it might have gone in other years, when it was darn near impossible to imagine a straight-up rock song hitting No. 1. Yet for Hozier, this single was the right one to deliver a new level of chart success, and hit the market at the right time.

Andrew Unterberger: It’s gotta be more about timing, because I am just flummoxed as to why this song of all songs is the one to take Hozier to the penthouse. Not that it’s bad, just that it doesn’t feel in any way exceptional among Hozier’s last decade of releases — if you told me it was originally a deep cut I’d forgotten about from 2019’s Wasteland, Baby! I would have zero trouble believing you. People evidently hear more there than I do to be streaming it in the massive numbers that they are, but I still have to think that it’s more effect than cause as relates to the larger Hozier revival.

3. Do you think the success of “Too Sweet” re-establishes Hozier as a true A-list star in 2024, or is it more a one-time deal for the singer-songwriter that’s unlikely to lead to many future successes beyond his pre-established cult fandom?

Katie Atkinson: I think this definitely re-establishes Hozier’s place in music. It’s nice that this trend of growly-voiced singer/songwriters (as established in this very column back in late January) has not only created new stars, but has also given rise to artists who have been doing this for a decade. At this moment, AC and pop radio is more primed to play Hozier music than ever before, and he’s seized that moment.

Stephen Daw: I wouldn’t go as far as saying “A-list,” but I think “Too Sweet” will definitely net Hozier a lot of cultural capital that will cement his place as one of the most sought-after voices in the folk-pop space. That’s in large part because of the cult fandom that has helped spread this song across apps like TikTok for the last few months — with an established fanbase already built in, it only feels that much more natural for newcomers to join in and strengthen that core, which leads to a wider base, which leads to more recruiting, so on and so forth. Watch this space, because “Too Sweet” is just the beginning of Hozier’s mainstream return.

Kyle Denis: I don’t know if Hozier was ever truly A-list, and I don’t think “Too Sweet” puts him there either. Nonetheless, it’s a beautiful culmination of a truly underrated two years for him. He packed out arenas night after night on Unreal Unearth tour and the accompanying album had a lot of grassroots love, including two chart-toppers at AAA radio. I think, at best, “Too Sweet” will help increase the size of his cult fandom and rope more fans into the sprawling lore behind some of his most beloved songs and lyrics. That should be enough for him to continue getting major hits in his home formats while providing a cushion for a mainstream smash whenever the pop music pendulum swings in the direction of his sound.

Jason Lipshutz: My guess is that Hozier continues in the same lane he’s occupied for years, with a slighter brighter light moving forward. Maybe he hadn’t matched the single-song success of “Take Me to Church” prior to “Too Sweet,” yet all three of his studio albums scored top 3 debuts on the Billboard 200, and he’s been playing to sizable crowds for a decade now. “Too Sweet” is unlikely to yield a slew of follow-up chart hits, but Hozier was not an obscure artist prior to this No. 1 hit; the audiences streaming his songs and buying his tickets will grow because of “Too Sweet,” regardless of how his next singles perform.

Andrew Unterberger: I think he’s there, to be honest — probably even moreso than he was in 2014. It’s one thing for radio and pop culture ubiquity to elevate your big hit to smash status (as happened with “Church”), but when it’s simply some good TikTok promotion and online buzz that lifts your song above hot new releases from many of the biggest superstars of the past 15 years, that usually means you’re pretty golden for some time to come. Hozier might not top the Hot 100 again, but I’d be a little surprised at this point if he didn’t become a regular fixture on the chart for at least the next few years.

4. If you had to look back to the early-mid 2010s for another hitmaking artist from the alt and/or folk spheres who could be due for a big 2020s comeback moment like this, who would you point to?

Katie Atkinson: The first thing that came to mind was The Lumineers, who peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 back in 2012 with “Ho Hey.” They’ve stayed active in music since then but haven’t climbed back to those heights. They should be looking for a Noah Kahan feature right about now.

Stephen Daw: As much as I desperately want to see Gotye return to his solo career and score another gargantuan hit like “Somebody That I Used to Know,” the chances of that happening seem infinitesimally small. So, instead, I’ll go with Florence + The Machine — the band certainly hasn’t gone anywhere since the peak of their success in 2010 and 2011, charting three top 10 albums in the intervening years. I could easily see Florence Welch and company crafting a folksy, funky anthem that takes off on TikTok and occupies a similar space to “Too Sweet” some time in the next few months.

Kyle Denis: Gotye or George Ezra. If we stretch to the back half of the 2000s, I’ll throw in Colbie Caillat and Kings of Leon too.

Jason Lipshutz: If a new Gotye album exists at the end of the earth, to be discovered only by the bravest and most ambitious xylophone-music enthusiast, then it looks like I am going on an expedition. After “Somebody That I Used To Know” took over the Hot 100 and Making Mirrors turned into one of the most underrated pop full-lengths of the 2010s, we are still waiting for a follow-up from Wally de Backer. And while I am a diehard fan rooting for a comeback, I do think that a Gotye return would generate considerable interest from curious pop fans! Call up Kimbra, grab the buckets of face paint, and let’s go.

Andrew Unterberger: “Riptide” singer-songwriter Vance Joy — who, like Hozier, never really went away after his one big U.S. crossover hit — feels no more than a big-ticket remix away from getting back on the Hot 100.

5. “Take Me to Church”: more timeless classic or dated mid-’10s relic?

Katie Atkinson: Wait, is anyone going to say relic? This song is still so good! I’m definitely going timeless classic and welcoming Andrew Hozier-Byrne back with open arms into the 2020s.

Stephen Daw: I can hear “Take Me to Church” today and feel it hit just as hard as it did a decade ago — this one is timeless classic, for sure.

Kyle Denis: Timeless classic. This ain’t “Party Rock Anthem!”

Jason Lipshutz: I lean towards “mid-‘10s relic” — not as a knock on the song, but because, especially in lieu of “Too Sweet” topping the Hot 100, it sure seems like Hozier has transcended what once was his defining hit and fashioned out a formidable career! “Take Me to Church” enjoyed its moment of ubiquity, but its creator has moved on to bigger and better.

Andrew Unterberger: It’s certainly got claims to being both — it’s hard to hear the song without being reminded of the dozens of trailers and pop culture moments it soundtracked in the mid-’10s, not to mention the moments of our own lives. But I lean a little more towards timeless classic, because even back in 2014 it felt elevated from the rest of what was happening on the charts, and there’s still no other song in 21st century pop music that occupies its exact space.

Rick Ross Eats Edibles & Teases New Album on Final Episode of Mike Tyson’s ‘Hotboxin” Podcast

Mike Tyson might appear on Rick Ross‘ new album. Or maybe that was just the weed talking.

The Miami rapper made an appearance on the very last episode of Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’ podcast. The former heavyweight champion announced he would be moving on from the popular podcast in March, but didn’t give any particular reasons why. Whatever the reason, Tyson seems like he’s looking forward to his next chapter in life, whatever that may be.

But back to the podcast. This episode was jokes immediately. Tyson’s business partner and co-host Fred “Frenchy” Madzimba tried to conduct a real interview, but it went off the rails from the start. Tyson makes fun of Frenchy for trying to sound like a serious journalist when he asks Rick Ross about the beautiful relationship he has with Meek Mill. Instead, Ross — impressed with the three zippers Madzimba has on his shirt — pleads with him to ask him another good question, saying, “Give me another question, give me a good one. … Come on, you got three zippers on yo’ chest.”

Frenchy’s three zippers becomes a running joke for Ross. Of course, Frenchy doesn’t get to ask a question and the convo moves on to Tyson’s line of infused edible ears. When Ross asks what they taste like, Tyson says that Evander Holyfield’s ear tastes like a—.

Trending on Billboard

The shenanigans didn’t stop there. Apparently, Mike’s Bites are strong enough to make Rick Ross’ feet tingle and, even crazier, made him high enough to make fun of an old photo of Tyson at Sammy Davis Jr.’s birthday.

“That n—a that cut your hair ain’t give you no blend,” Ross said jokingly before Iron Mike confirms that he was sporting a “soup bowl” haircut.

Things do come back to Earth for a bit, though, when Ross mentions he’s working on his third book and alludes to The Zenith being the title of his next album. The episode is wildly entertaining and is the perfect sendoff for Tyson’s foray into the competitive podcast market.

Post Malone Takes Part in Taylor Swift’s ‘Fortnight’ Challenge With Tour Montage

Post Malone has entered the #FortnightChallenge!

The superstar took to YouTube Shorts to share a montage of himself on tour, meeting fans, playing onstage, having fun after the show and everything in between — all soundtracked by his contribution to Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, “Fortnight.”

Earlier in the day, Swift launched the #FortnightChallenge with her own video, in which she gave fans a glimpse into her recording process with a montage of footage featuring the singer in the studio, posing for promotional photos and overall enjoying the album-making process.

The duo released their music video for “Fortnight” on Friday (April 19), and the clip features Post’s tattoos on Taylor’s face as she appears to wipe her face clean, only to reveal a face full of ink instead. In a series of flashback scenes, both of the musicians are fresh-faced, as Swift runs into the arms of a tattoo-free Malone.

Swift took to her social media accounts after the video’s release to marvel at the finished product and the collaborators who helped her achieve it.

“When I was writing the Fortnight music video, I wanted to show you the worlds I saw in my head that served as the backdrop for making this music,” she wrote. “Pretty much everything in it is a metaphor or a reference to one corner of the album or another. For me, this video turned out to be the perfect visual representation of this record and the stories I tell in it. Post Malone blew me away on set as our tortured tragic hero and I’m so grateful to him for everything he put into this collaboration. I’m still laughing from getting to work with the coolest guys on earth, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles (tortured poets, meet your colleagues from down the hall, the dead poets). I still can’t believe I get to work with the unfathomably brilliant Rodrigo Prieto on cinematography and my team of dream collaborators: Ethan Tobman (production design), Chancler Haynes (editor), Anthony Dimino (1st AD), Jil Hardin (producer) and Dom Thomas (executive producer). Parliament aced the VFX as always. Joseph Cassell, Lorrie Turk and Jemma Muradian made these tortured looks come to life. The entire crew made this a dream to shoot. Thank you to everyone involved and everyone who has watched it!!”

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Winner Nymphia Wind Is Still ‘Dead Inside’ After Making History

After a series of solo lip syncs and one final Lip Sync for the Crown to Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam,” Nymphia Wind was officially crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar and the winner of season 16. The fashionable, yellow-loving queen triumphed over her sister Sapphira Cristál in the final lip sync, dressing herself up as a massive cup of bubble tea and delivering a series of iconic outfit reveals to earn the competition’s coveted prize.

In winning, Wind made history for the show — with her ascension, the queen became the first East Asian performer to win RuPaul’s Drag Race, and the first Asian queen to take home the crown since Raja was crowned on season three, 13 years ago.

Trending on Billboard

Accepting her scepter from RuPaul, Nymphia addressed the audience during the finale. “To those who feel like they don’t belong, just remember to live fearlessly and have the courage to live your truth,” she said, before declaring “Taiwan, this is for you!”

Below, Nymphia chats with Billboard following her victory, breaking down her excellent showing throughout the season, her love of bananas, her reaction to the President of Taiwan congratulating her, and how she created her memorable finale lip sync.

Congratulations to you, our current reigning! How are you feeling after a weekend of celebration?

Well, I have two answers. First, I feel very excited to have won this dream of mine, and it’s crazy to be able to live this out for my community and my country. It really means a lot to me to be able to live this. But second, in reality, I am dying. [Laughs.] I want to sleep! I have no feelings anymore! I am dead inside!

I can only imagine that the last 48 hours has been a lot for you.

Yes, it has been a lot, and the problem is it’s getting to be more and more of a lot. But there are worse problems to have. I am enjoying this torture, because I’m doing something I love.

You spoke before the finale about wanting to break the “Asian curse” on Drag Race, since no East Asian queen had ever won the show, and the last Asian winner was Raja in season three. What does it mean for you to be the one breaking that curse?

It’s truly amazing. That’s why that win means so much to me, because it’s a win for the entire community. Because I remember when I was younger and I would watch the show, I said “I want to be the first East Asian to win this show.” Fast forward to now, and here we are — thinking about it is really crazy. You can dream big, and it will work itself out!

Even the President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen congratulated you for your win and thanked you for “living fearlessly.” As someone who has been championing Taiwan throughout this competition, what was that like to see the president say that?

I fully gagged. I screamed so loud, that was truly so crazy. It was such a sweet message, and to be able to get that recognition was absolutely amazing. I mean, she’s the literal President of f–king Taiwan! It makes me feel like I was successful in actually making my country proud. Ugh, it’s so beautiful.

You recently explained your obsession with bananas, saying that you look good in the color yellow and you wanted to combine that with some campy, phallic imagery. How many bananas or banana-themed gifts have fans brought you so far?

Girl, too many! No, it’s really fun to see the fans bring banana things, I love it when I see it. I will say, when they bring me actual, real bananas, I have to tell them that I can’t take them. Like, I will sometimes eat them in front of them because that’s fun, but if you give me a bunch of bananas during a meet-and-greet, I’m sorry, I can’t take those. But I will sign it! Like, traveling with bananas is not happening, sorry. But it is really cute seeing fans bring all these bananas to the shows, because ultimately, Nymphia Wind is a cult! I’m going to make everyone yellow bananas!

This was a truly phenomenal season for you as a competitor, especially when it came to your runways. You have such a good eye, not only for creating haute couture, high-concept fashion, but for always giving it that little twist that made it so camp. The pussycat wig look comes to mind.

Yeah, usually, I got to read the brief on each runway theme and let my imagination run wild. The question always starts with, “What can I do to make this cool?” And then you build off of that. The inspiration really comes while I’m in the process of making the looks, so the full concept is always still in development while I am putting things together.

That pussycat outfit was originally made for Chinese New Year celebration for the Year of the Rabbit, and it was supposed to be finished in January. But I wasn’t able to finish it in time for the celebration, so I just kept working on it here and there, but didn’t end up wearing it anywhere. So then, when I got the brief for the pussycat wig look, I just knew I needed to fit something into that slot. So that’s where that look came from.

There was a running theory on the show amongst your competitors, where they were convinced that every time you complained about being stressed heading into a challenge, you were never actually concerned and were really just playing mind games with them. What’s the truth?

I, 100%, felt like I had no idea what I was doing during filming. The other girls were definitely a little annoyed at me and kept saying that I was crying wolf, but I had truly no idea where they were coming from at the time. That is my natural process — I complain, I whine, I stress out, I self-doubt, and then ultimately, I know what I need to do and manage to pull it together. Being on Drag Race is genuinely scary and daunting, because you’re living with this fear of going home or someone outshining you, and the challenge is about pulling yourself together and making it work. So, the work room really became the place for me to get all that panic out of my system.

It did give us some of the most iconic moments of the season, where you would just do and say truly unhinged things on a regular basis. Have you continued your Spanish lessons with Morphine?

Nope! “Dame más leche” is still the only thing I know how to say in Spanish!

This finale reminded me a lot of season 9, where we have a finalist who never lip synced on the show, and then absolutely demolished their first proper lip sync of the season. How did you come up with this bubble tea-inspired concept for your “Padam Padam” lip sync?

I knew that I was either going to be up against Plane or Sapphira, and with Sapphira, I knew that her looks are always these big, parade float-style looks. I knew I needed to come in with something big, too. I also knew I wanted to represent my country with this lip sync, but I didn’t just want to stick a flag onto my dress and call it a day. That, to me, is a bit too cheesy. So, I thought, “Maybe I should be a giant bubble tea,” because that’s the national drink of Taiwan. I talked with a designer, and they came up with the idea of the balloons floating up.

Then, I knew I wanted to have a second reveal, and I wanted to do it while doing a cartwheel at the same time, because I wanted to make each reveal a little more interesting. We literally built the look with the cartwheel and the stunts in mind, and the rest ended up working itself out.

Before we let you go, what can fans expect to see during Nymphia Wind’s reign as America’s Next Drag Superstar?

Honestly? Expect the unexpected. There’s nothing to expect — all you can do is sit back and watch.

‘The Tortured Poets Department’: All the Records Taylor Swift’s New Album Has Broken (So Far)

The 31-track LP sold 1.4 million copies in its first day.

Taylor Swift was gunning for a truly epic release week long before The Tortured Poets Department actually dropped, with the pop star surprising fans by unleashing 31 new songs — as opposed to the previously confirmed 16 main and four bonus tracks — in the span of two hours April 19.

She’d been crafting the sprawling, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner-produced project for about two years before it finally arrived, with the singer telling fans at a February Eras Tour show that she’d been working on it since the moment she submitted the Billboard 200-topping Midnights to her label some time in 2022. The unavoidable news cycle about her breakups from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn and The 1975’s Matty Healy, as well as her blossoming romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, only added fuel to the fire of hype leading up to Tortured Poets, which Swift further stoked by saying at another Eras concert, “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more.”

Come April 19, and her inimitable lyricism, discourse-provoking songwriting and apparent allusions to the aforementioned relationships proved to be more than enough to make millions of listeners tune in, the 14-time Grammy winner smashing records left and right in the process. Before Tortured Poets even hit the Billboard charts, it was doing unprecedented numbers in streaming, sales and vinyl — not to mention selling 1.4 million copies in its first day on the market, according to Luminate — giving Swift’s peers a run for their money in more ways than one.

Sheryl Crow, Sens. John Cornyn & Amy Klobuchar to Be Honored at 2024 Grammys on the Hill Awards

Sheryl Crow and Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) will be honored on April 30 when the Recording Academy hosts its annual Grammys on the Hill Awards. Hosted by singer/actress Candiace Dillard Bassett, the awards dinner will be held at the Hamilton Live in Washington, D.C., and feature live performances and special guests.

The event brings together congressional leaders and music makers to recognize those who have led the fight for creators’ rights.

“Protecting the rights of creators lies at the core of the Recording Academy’s mission,” Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement. “Grammys on the Hill is an opportunity to celebrate the artists and our nation’s leaders who champion this cause, and to acknowledge music’s unifying power.”

“Receiving this award from Recording Academy is a tremendous honor for me, because protecting the rights of creators is more important now than ever before,” said Crow. “In this age where technology is changing the world faster than we can adapt, we need clear eyes to see both the opportunities and the challenges ahead, so that artists are not disadvantaged any more than they already are. Music nourishes our humanity, and I am proud to be recognized as an advocate for the protection of the people who make it.”

Crow has dedicated much of her life to activism. In 2000, she co-founded the Recording Artists’ Coalition with previous Grammys on the Hill honoree Don Henley to protect creators’ rights and change unfair industry practices. In 2009, the Recording Artists’ Coalition formed an alliance with the Recording Academy to continue its mission as a program within the Academy’s Advocacy office.

Recently, Crow has been vocal about the threat that AI presents to music creators, including on her new song “Evolution,” which grapples with the future impact of artificial intelligence on humanity and the planet.

As a philanthropist, Crow is known for her support of multiple charities, including MusiCares, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, The World Food Program, Feeding America, Adopt a Classroom, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Pelotonia and the Delta Children’s Home. A nine-time Grammy winner, Crow was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.

Sens. Cornyn and Klobuchar are being recognized for their support of creators and their collaborative efforts championing policies in support of the music community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the senators provided a lifeline for music through the Save Our Stages Act, which provided $16 billion in federal assistance to shuttered venues. That represents the largest federal investment in the arts in U.S. history.

In this Congress, they are working to reform live event ticketing through the Fans First Act. Introduced in December 2023, the legislation would address flaws in the ticketing marketplace.

The following day, May 1, the Recording Academy will host the annual Grammys on the Hill Advocacy Day, which brings current and past Grammy winners and nominees, along with industry leaders, to meet with lawmakers to discuss issues facing today’s music creators. This year, music creators will convene with members of Congress to advance key issues that the Academy and its members continue to advocate for, including:

•    Protecting the image, likeness and voice of individual creators from AI fakes through legislative measures such as the No AI FRAUD Act and the No FAKES Act discussion draft.

•    Reforming the live event ticketing marketplace to better protect artists and fans through legislation including the Fans First Act and the TICKET Act.

For the first time, Grammys on the Hill is expanding beyond its long-time status as a two-day event. On May 3, the Grammys on the Hill Future Forum will be held in partnership with the Human Artistry Campaign and will explore the impact of artificial intelligence on the music community.

Pharrell Williams was the honoree at the 2023 Grammys on The Hill Awards. Last year’s event also honored U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.).
