Are Games Like Roblox and Fortnite the Next Fan Frontier for Artists?

At the end of 2023, the gaming platform Roblox announced that it had more than 71.5 million average daily active users. While it still remains best known to teens and their parents, evangelists see gaming hubs like Roblox and Fortnite as the new frontier of social media — another space where musicians will need to establish a presence if they hope to remain commercially relevant with younger listeners.

“Just the way every artist has an Instagram account and a TikTok, eventually everyone’s going to have a Roblox presence,” predicts Nic Hill, co-founder of the company Sawhorse Production. Hill has worked on Roblox projects for Olivia Rodrigo and Elton John, while Spotify, iHeartMedia and Warner Music Group have all launched Roblox experiences, and Sony Music has an in-house team developing music-focused games or experiences for both Roblox and Fortnite. (The latter boasts of having more than half a billion player accounts.)

In Roblox, players create an avatar and access an ecosystem of millions of games, many of which are developed by creative teenagers rather than massive gaming companies. Roblox lovers, nearly half of whom are female, pay to acquire Robux, a currency which allows them to buy an assortment of items for their avatars, and devote an average of 2.5 hours a day to roaming Roblox’s colorful, blocky virtual byways.

“There are different ways that they spend that time,” says Karibi Dagogo-Jack, head of music partnerships at Roblox. “Sometimes it’s playing a hardcore first-person shooter game. Sometimes it’s just hanging out with people that have an affinity for a thing they have an affinity for” — like music.

Fornite, in contrast, came to prominence as a fight-to-the-death survival game — its audience skews older than Roblox’s, and it’s male-dominated — but has been trying to diversify its appeal. Most notably, in March of 2023, Epic Games launched Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN), which means creators can now develop their own worlds and experiences and make them available for the Fortnite audience, giving it some of the user-generated flair of Roblox.

Initially the music industry’s main way of engaging with Roblox and Fortnite audiences was through virtual concerts from the Lil Nas Xs and Travis Scotts of the world. But concerts, even virtual ones, are massive undertakings, often taking six months or more to develop and fine-tune, according to sources who have worked on them. That means concerts make sense primarily for a small number of big-name artists. In contrast, sources say putting together a Roblox shop may take closer to four to six weeks.

Even beyond budgetary constraints, concerts are one-time experiences in environments that prioritize constant interaction, an old-school approach to a new-school platform. “Artist events can have a lot more longevity,” says Ricardo Briceno, chief business officer of Gamefam, which built Harmony Hills, the virtual space that also serves as the home of Warner Music Group’s Roblox concerts.

Tony Barnes, founder of Karta, which worked on a popular Roblox experience for TWICE — a “fan hub” where supporters of the K-Pop group can play games, hang out virtually, and buy digital goods for their avatars — advises clients to think of the platform as “a new community channel that needs to be nurtured.” “You need to maintain your engagement,” he says. “It’s an always-on strategy.”

The music industry is now in a period that Hill describes as “a constant test and learn” with Roblox and Fortnite; some projects have generated serious revenue, while others are lucky to break even. “We’re still scratching the surface,” Briceno says.

Yet competition is already fierce. “Roblox is becoming a crowded space,” Hill notes. “Even if you’re a popular name and you show up, you can’t just expect everyone to be so excited and somehow find you. A lot of brands are marketing their experiences on the platform.”

Both Roblox and Fortnite incentivize artists and labels to treat the platforms as revenue generators. Artists can sell items on Roblox which players use to customize their avatars; the creator of the item takes home 30%, the creator of the experience — which could also be the artist — where the item is sold gets 40%, and the platform takes 30%.

Briceno sold ice antlers for Cher, for example, while TWICE has sold more than 3 million emotes, and an Elton John emote was purchased over 1.5 million times, according to a Roblox representative. Gavin Johnson, director of syncs and partnerships at the electronic music label Monstercat, oversaw the sale of a limited edition Ruby pendant necklace for 1,000,001 Robux (around $10,000) — “the highest primary sale ever on the platform.”

Over on Fortnite, if a label creates its own customized game-play environment, known as an “island,” they receive an “engagement payout.” (Roblox offers these too.) “40% of the net revenue from Fortnite’s Item Shop and related real-money purchases” is set aside for this purpose, according to Epic Games’ website, and then disbursed among island creators according to a complex calculation that takes into account the island’s ability to attract new players, re-engage dormant players, and keep both types coming back. (One gaming executive says that while the top UEFN experiences “drive a lot of gameplay and repeat visitors,” there’s a huge gap between the top few and most of the rest; a rep for Epic Games did not respond to a request for comment.)

For now, artists and labels often find it easier to jump into Roblox, in part because the barrier to entry is low — “basically anyone can create anything and sell it,” as Briceno puts it. In contrast, “Fortnite doesn’t allow studios or creators to sell items in-game,” says Michael Herriger, co-founder of Atlas Creative, which built iHeartMedia’s Roblox environment. “Everything that is a Fortnite skin [an outfit to customize a player’s look in the game], for example, comes directly from the Epic Games store.”

Selling items, designing artist-themed experiences — these can help raise awareness of an act and drive what Barnes calls “fan culture,” but may not involve actual music. Artists and labels are still trying to figure out what effective music integrations might look like. “The idea of using Roblox to drive discovery of your song is really cool, and maybe untapped,” Dagogo-Jack says.

When Metallica released 72 Seasons in 2023, the band partnered with five popular Roblox games to pipe its music into their creations. (“It’s a fantastic way to promote these brands, be it Metallica or any other musical artist,” says Kohl Couture, who goes by MiniToon, and created the game Piggy, which was part of the Metallica rollout.) Earlier this year, Sony Music unveiled a Fortnite game called Nitewave, where winners of a capture-the-flag-like experience get to control the soundtrack of Sony artists, including songs by Flo Milli and Calvin Harris.

While Briceno “very much believe[s] in a future where there will be music discovery in these platforms,” he’s not sure “the right tools are available in these platforms just yet.” One potential tool is being developed by the company STYNGR: An ad-supported boombox full of pre-cleared songs — at the moment, just tracks from Universal Music Group — that players can equip their avatar with.

In early experiments, when players need to turn on the boombox themselves, 15% do so; if the boombox starts automatically, 90% choose to leave it on. Session lengths increase by as much as 10% while players have the radio blasting musical accompaniment, according to Alex Tarrand, STYNGR’s COO and co-founder, and for a small group of “power users,” session lengths are tripling.

“The reason the engagement goes up is people stay longer in games if they like what they’re listening to,” Tarrand says. “Our thesis is that recorded music makes stuff better.”

Benny Blanco Says SZA Once Ate an Entire Tray of His Banana Pudding

SOSBenny Blanco‘s banana pudding is so good, SZA couldn’t Ctrl herself around it. During an appearance on the Monday (April 29) episode of SiriusXM’s The Sporkful podcast, the producer told host Dan Pashman about the time the “Kill Bill” singer ate an entire tray of his banana pudding while they were supposed to be working on music together.

“We were at my house, and she went down to get a drink and she saw something in the fridge,” Blanco recalled. “She had one bite. It was in a big like sheet tray. And then by the end of the day, there was no more banana pudding left.”

“She would just, like, sneak down for bites,” he continued. “And then every time she came to the studio, she needed a banana pudding. Then it was like, ‘Oh, wait, what else do you make?’ Then it was like, lasagna … We wound up cooking more than making music, you know?”

The “Eastside” musician — who worked on “Nobody Gets Me” and “Special” on SZA’s 2022 Billboard 200-topping album SOS — also revealed that he and the R&B-pop star now have a “bartering system” when it comes to food and music. “There was a time when SZA said, ‘I’m not coming over unless you have spicy rigatoni cooked for me,’” Blanco said. “And she was, like, halfway joking, but halfway serious. ‘Cause I’ll bark demands at her. I’ll be like, ‘We need to get this vocal done.’ And she’s like, ‘We need to eat the spicy rigatoni!’”

The new interview comes ahead of Blanco’s new cookbook Open Wide, which hits shelves Tuesday (April 30). While promoting the project in a Wall Street Journal interview last week, the hitmaker gushed about how he and his girlfriend, singer-actress Selena Gomez, like to bond over their passion for food and enjoy making dinners for their families.

Blanco also told the publication that he was the “last one to know” he was in love with the Rare Beauty founder. “It’s crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes, and you don’t even notice,” he recalled. “Then you have that Clueless moment where you’re like, ‘Wait, I’m in love.’”

Later, he told SiriusXM that he and Gomez have not yet gone on a double date with Taylor Swift, the Only Murders in the Building star’s longtime best friend, and Travis Kelce — but he has bumped into the “Anti-Hero” singer recently. “I just saw [Swift] at [Los Angeles restaurant] Sushi Park a week ago,” he said. “I ran into her right before Coachella a week ago.”

Charlie Puth Finally Responded to Taylor Swift’s ‘Tortured Poets Department’ Shout-Out

It’s about time! On Sunday (April 28) Charlie Puth finally appeared to respond to the unexpected shout-out he got on Taylor Swift‘s Billboard 200 No. 1 album The Tortured Poets Department. And while his nod to the lyrical reference on the album’s title track was low-key, the “Light Switch” singer’s Instagram Story post said it all with one simple image.

After Swift posted an image of the herself in the studio with TTPD scrawled in sharpie across the CD version of the sprawling collection, Puth put his own spin on it by grabbing one of the other studio images of a smiling Swift at work with the album’s title scrawled in black marker across the front. The Story didn’t have any sound or message from Puth, 32, but it was appeared to be Puth’s way of subtly thanking Swift for the kind words.

On the song Swift sings, “You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate/ We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,” she sings on the title track that many fans have speculated features veiled references to Taylor reported brief 2023 fling with The 1975’s Matty Healy.

Trending on Billboard

Puth’s image came from Swift’s celebration of TTPD‘s record-setting run after Taylor learned that the album marked her 14th debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, tying her with Jay-Z for the most No. 1s among solo artists in the nearly-70-year history of the chart; only the Beatles, with 19, have more No. 1s.

The Tortured Poets Department earned 2.61 million equivalent album units in the U.S. for the week week ending April 25, with traditional album sales (purchases of digital download albums, CDs, vinyl LPs and cassettes) making up 1.914 million of that sum. Vinyl comprised an astonishing 859,000 of the total, with the deluxe, 31-track deluxe version generating 891.34 million on-demand official streams.

Taylor Swift Claims Record Top 14 Spots on Billboard Hot 100, Led by ‘Fortnight’ With Post Malone

Taylor Swift achieves one of the most record-shattering weeks in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart – surpassing unprecedented heights that she previously set – as she claims the top 14 positions on the survey dated May 4. All 14 songs, led by “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, are from her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which, following the Republic Records set’s April 19 release, blasts in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Swift was already the only artist ever to dominate the Hot 100’s entire top 10 — thanks to tracks from her last album of all-new material, Midnights, in 2022, led by the collection’s “Anti-Hero.”

Among other new chart feats for Swift, “Fortnight” becomes her 12th Hot 100 No. 1, as she ties for the sixth-most leaders in the chart’s archives; she ups her career count of top 10s from 49 to 59, the most among women; and she charts 32 songs – all 31 from the deluxe version of The Tortured Poets Department plus established smash “Cruel Summer” – on the latest list overall, the most ever in a single week by a woman.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated May 4, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, April 30. Diddy Files Motion To Dismiss Parts of Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Lawyers for Diddy rebuked a woman’s lawsuit that accused him of sexual assault and filed a motion to dismiss elements of it.

Last Friday (April 26), the legal team for Diddy filed a motion in a New York court to dismiss parts of a sexual assault lawsuit filed against him, stating that  the allegations “were brought under statutes that did not exist at the time the alleged misconduct occurred.” The legal documents explicitly point to the charges of revenge porn and human trafficking that should be dismissed outright by the court as they were not in existence at the time of the allegation. The New York State Revenge Porn Law was codified in 2019, and the New York Services for Victims of Human Trafficking Law which went into effect in 2007 were among those cited by the attorneys.

Continuing on that front, the attorneys also state that the lawsuit’s claims against Bad Boy Entertainment and Combs Enterprises who are named as company defendants in the suit “fail as a matter of law” because neither entity was  “in existence at the time of the alleged conduct.” The filing also claims that the lawsuit’s allegations were “false, offensive, and salacious.” The lawsuit was filed against Diddy, aka Sean Combs, last November with the Manhattan Supreme Court. It occurred a day before the expiration of the New York State Survivors Act, within the same time frame that Diddy’s ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura also filed her lawsuit against the mogul alleging sexual abuse. That suit was settled the following day.

The victim, Joi Dickerson-Neal, first alleged that the Bad Boy Records founder sexually assaulted her when she was a student at Syracuse University in 1991. Dickerson-Neal claims that he “intentionally drugged” her after dinner at a restaurant in Harlem, then drove her to a recording studio where she stated she was “in a physical state where she could not independently stand or walk.” Diddy then took her to his place, where she says she was sexually assaulted. The lawsuit then says that he filmed the incident, and a male friend of hers “viewed the ‘sex tape’ along with other men.” Her lawyer, Jonathan Goldhirsch, said at the time of the filing that it did “severe harm to Ms. Dickerson-Neal’s reputation, career prospects, and emotional well-being,”

Dave East Stars In New ‘New York Undercover’ Skit

After decades of being off the air, everyone’s favorite ’90s Hip-Hop cop show, New York Undercover, is back! Well, not really, but kinda.

Over the weekend the show celebrated it’s 30th anniversary with the help of Lethal Shooter (NBA shooting coach Chris Matthews), Dave East and others. The show’s two main stars, Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo returned as Detective J.C. Williams and Detective Eddie Torres and gave us an idea of what New York Undercover could be in 2024.

Breaking out the baggy pants and leather jackets like it was 1995 again, Detective Torres and Williams run up on Dave East and his crew in search of Lethal Shooter. Remaining true to the code of the streets, East promptly denied knowing anything before the two D’s were alerted to Shooter’s whereabouts. Taking to Dyckman court to cuff up their person of interest, Torres and Williams once again break the case wide open in less than a half-hour.

This was hilarious.

We don’t know if this was just a one-off for the two actors or if they’re angling to get their show back on the airwaves or streaming, but either way it was pretty cool to see them back in action on the streets of New York.

Check out Dave East, Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo breathe new life into New York Undercover below. Let us know your thoughts on the skit in the comments section.

‘Good Times’ Showrunner Addresses Backlash To Netflix Reboot

The Netflix reboot of the iconic series Good Times has gained heavy backlash, recently addressed by its showrunner.

It has been a couple of weeks since the animated reboot of Good Times hit Netflix, and the audience reaction overall hasn’t been pretty. The responses haven’t been lost on those behind the scenes, according to its showrunner, Ranada Shepard. In a recent and extensive interview with the Hollywood Reporter, she stated that she understood the backlash due to certain factors.

“I was always rooted in [the fact that] I understand if this is jolting,” Shepard began. “Because what you needed was someone to tell everyone, ‘I know you’re used to the sweet sitcom, but this is not only a reimagination, it’s in a different genre that requires it to be loud and offensive with hard jokes and inappropriate.’ Without that type of framing, you can never blame the audience, and I never would.”

Shepard also said that the lack of a proper rollout may also be a factor. “You haven’t seen J.B. [Smoove] and Yvette [Nicole Brown] and Marsai [Martin] and Jay Pharoah and Slink Johnson on couches all across America, which typically happens when you’re rolling out a show,” she said. “There was no framing that the audience had, it was just: ‘Watch this and form an opinion.’ And, they watched and they formed an opinion.”

The trailer was released in March for the reboot of the late Norman Lear-penned series (Lear remains on as an executive producer), which premiered all 10 of its episodes on April 12. John Amos, who played the patriarch James Evans, had previously spoken about the reboot and the challenges it would present. As for BernNadette Stanis, who played Thelma Evans, she said that the show differed from her expectations of what it would be.

Look, there’s some people who it’s not going to be for,” Shepard said to the Hollywood Reporter. “But I ask those people, ‘Do you watch adult animation?’ Because I know a lot of people don’t watch adult animation, so if that’s not your genre, this genre is going to be difficult for you. But are they well-written stories that stand in social commentary, and each one has a message? Absolutely.” She also urged people to give the show a chance. “Just give it a second and look at the stories and you’ll understand.”

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Make Romantic Entrance in New Mahomies Charity Gala Highlight Reel: Watch

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were featured together for only a split-second in 15 and The Mahomies Foundation’s new Instagram reel, but of course, they still stole the show.

Posted Sunday (April 28), the video compiles clips from the organization’s Las Vegas charity gala, which the “Anti-Hero” singer attended alongside the Kansas City Chief tight end over the weekend. The snippet that has fans buzzing, though, shows Swift and Kelce elegantly walking into the venue side-by-side, holding hands and looking stunning in their evening attire.

One commenter joked that the romantic moment would have “terrorized wattpad,” a popular fan-fiction hub, in 2013. Another person echoed countless other admirers by saying that the couple is the “closest thing america has to royalty.”

Founded by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in 2019, 15 and The Mahomies is “dedicated to improving the lives of children” and supporting initiatives that “focus on health, wellness, communities in need of resources and other charitable causes,” according to its website. Though Swift is visible in only the one clip, the charity’s reel also shows Kelce laughing with friends during its weekend golf fundraiser and dutifully catching footballs from Mahomes mid-gala.

Not featured is the moment the New Heights podcaster auctioned off four tickets to an upcoming Eras Tour show for $80,000 on behalf of his girlfriend, whom he referred to as his “significant other” in the moment.

While she was in Vegas, Swift also got the news that her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, had made a historic debut atop the Billboard 200, opening with 2.61 million equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week. “I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album. 2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS??” she tweeted shortly afterward. “Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed.”
