Benny Blanco Can’t Believe He’s Dating Selena Gomez Either: ‘How Did This Happen?’

Benny Blanco knows he’s a lucky guy. While promoting his new cookbook Open Wide on TODAY With Hoda & Jenna Wednesday (May 1), the producer opened up about wooing Selena Gomez through the power of food and emphasized that he still can’t believe he was able to win over the superstar’s heart.

“I wake up every day, and I look in the mirror, and I’m like, ‘How did this happen?’” an animated Blanco told hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on the show. “But until anyone figures it out, whee!”

When asked whether cooking was the secret to romantic success, Blanco poked fun at his own looks. “Are you out of your mind?” he said. “Look at me!”

“The only way I got where I am is by cooking food,” he added, referring to his relationship with the Rare Beauty founder, whom he started dating in June. “That’s the best first date in the world.”

The interview comes the morning after Open Wide hit shelves Tuesday (April 30), which Blanco and Gomez celebrated with an intimate party that night. The Only Murders in the Building actress later shared photos from the event, showing off the “Eastside” musician’s cake and writing that she was “so proud” of him.

On the evening of his book launch, Blanco also stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he treated the late-night host to a full steak dinner. While there, he once again opened up about bribing SZA with food to record music, as well as working on Ed Sheeran’s Divide album with the “Bad Habits” singer during a days-long sailing journey to Europe.

“Me and Ed Sheeran watched Titanic in bed, cuddling, on the fourth night,” the “Eastside” singer told Fallon. “He’s the nicest guy in the world.”

Drizzy popped out for the Young Money duo’s live debut of “Needle.” The island-tinged record landed on Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 album in December, but the two were yet to hit the stage together for a performance of the track.

Draped in baggy pants and a matching camo jacket, Drake and Nicki electrified the Scotiabank Arena crowd with their seamless energy for their first performance together in years.

At one point, Drizzy gave Minaj a kiss on the cheek. “Make some noise for the king of Toronto,” Nicki told the audience as she walked backstage. “Make some noise for this icon, this legend.”

With Nicki undergoing a wardrobe change, the 6 God kept the party buzzing while performing “Rich Baby Daddy.” He then left the crowd with a message that could possibly be tied to his scintillating feud with Kendrick Lamar.

“I love you. You know what time it is — you know what I have to do,” he cryptically stated.

“Needle” served as a Pink Friday 2 standout and peaked at No. 34 in its debut on the Billboard Hot 100; the track remained on the chart for four weeks.

The trek doesn’t stop for Nicki, who is returning to her hometown on Wednesday (May 1) for a Barclays Center show in Brooklyn. She’ll then have a week off before heading back out for three dates in Texas.

The deal will include 44 acres of development over a 55-acre site in Nashville’s Whites Creek neighborhood. The Rock Nashville campus will include three buildings with more than 515,000 square feet of sound stages as well as creative offices and production facilities in various sizes with the capacity to support various production specifications for live shows, from local bands to A-list artists. The campus will include resources for performers and 13 band and production studio rehearsal spaces ranging from club/theater sizes to amphitheater, arena and stadium-scale (including one space up to 95 feet tall to replicate venues of that size), as well as set storage, backline rental, artist relation offices and a community cafe.

The campus is expected to become home to nearly 35 companies, including rehearsal studio complex SoundCheck, which had a hand in designing Rock Nashville and helped spearhead the strategic partnership between the team at Rock Lititz and Al. Neyer. SoundCheck will move from its current home on Cowan Street in Nashville, where it has been located for over three decades. Additionally, Clair Global, which provides live production spaces, systems integration and audio solutions, will be located at the new campus.

Groundbreaking for the new facility occurred in mid-April, and construction is expected to be completed in Fall of 2025. Rock Nashville is expected to be home to 400 employees, and 85 employees at support businesses.

“As a full-service developer, we’re thrilled to be involved in the design, construction, and development of the future of Music City and live entertainment. As we continue to invest in the growing market of Nashville, this is our first foray into the entertainment world. We couldn’t imagine a more perfect operating partner to bring a new offering to the Nashville market alongside,” said Patrick Poole, Nashville Market Leader for Al. Neyer, in a statement.

“As we approach ten years since Rock Lititz opened its doors, we’ve been eager to find the next space and partner for expanding our support for the live entertainment industry. This unique and hard-working community thrives with access to specialized training, mentoring, and resources to help create custom live experiences for audiences worldwide.  It is with great excitement that we’ve identified Nashville and Al. Neyer as the right city and partner. We are passionate about growing this network, and Nashville is the perfect location to join with other industry leaders to create something special,” added Andrea Shirk, Rock Lititz President and CEO, in a statement.

“SoundCheck has been part of the Nashville entertainment community for over 30 years, and we couldn’t be more excited to make Rock Nashville our new home,” said Soundcheck GM Kindal Jumper. “As Music City continues to grow as a premier destination for all genres of music, the campus’s state-of-the-art facilities will allow Soundcheck to meet the growing needs of today’s acts, ensuring the highest caliber production experience for artists and crews from Broadway to Bridgestone.

Rock Lititz was founded in 2000 by Troy Clair, owner of Clair Global, and Adam Davis, CEO of the TAIT Group. The Rock Lititz campus in Pennsylvania opened in 2014 and is home to more than 40 companies that support the live entertainment space.

Anne Wilson’s ‘Rebel’ Rockets In at No. 1 on Christian Albums, Top 10 on Country Albums Charts

Anne Wilson’s Rebel, which fuses Christian and country music, arrives at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart dated May 4. It also opens at No. 10 on Top Country Albums.

In its launch week (April 19-25), Rebel earned a weekly career-best 16,000 equivalent album units in the U.S., with 10,000 in album sales, according to Luminate.

The set is the first to premiere in the top 10 of both Top Christian Albums and Top Country Albums simultaneously since March 2021, when Carrie Underwood’s My Savior bowed in the penthouse on both charts.

Wilson co-authored all 16 tracks on her new LP, the Lexington, Ky., native’s second full-length.

Wilson recently told Billboard, “Writing [Rebel], producing it and releasing it in, like, five weeks was very fast, but it’s been cool to see the reaction and how my music has been able to go to both country and Christian platforms and be appreciated in both.”

Wilson’s first full project, My Jesus, entered Top Christian Albums at No. 1 in May 2022 with 13,000 equivalent album units. It followed her introductory live EP, My Jesus: Live in Nashville, which arrived at No. 17 in August 2021 and hit No. 12 that October.

The first Christian radio single from Rebel is “Strong,” which ranks at its No. 3 high on Christian Airplay with 5.7 million audience impressions. On the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Christian Songs chart, “Strong” holds at its No. 4 best, also driven by 1.7 million official U.S. streams (up 12%).

Wilson has earned one No. 1, among four top 10s, on Hot Christian Songs and two leaders on Christian Airplay. Her freshman single, “My Jesus,” dominated the former for four frames and the latter for six weeks beginning in August 2021. Her holiday track “I Still Believe in Christmas” followed, leading Christian Airplay for a week and peaking at No. 15 on Hot Christian Songs.

So far, one Rebel single has been introduced to country radio: “Rain in My Rearview,” being promoted by EMI Nashville (while Wilson’s Christian songs are being worked by Capitol Christian). Both are under the Universal Music Group Nashville umbrella.

Released seven years ago, the nearly four-minute visual isn’t a music video, but more of a visualizer with the single’s artwork displayed throughout the video. The milestone follows the Romeo Santos-assisted remix of “El Farsante,” which had previously surpassed one billion views. Currently, Ozuna takes No. 28 on YouTube’s Global Top Artists

While the trap-leaning song, a departure from Ozuna’s rhythmic reggaetón sound, didn’t have much presence on the Billboard charts, its remix with Romeo Santos did. That version peaked at No. 49 on the Hot 100 in 2018. It also landed at No. 2 on the Hot Latin Songs chart.

Trending on Billboard

“El Farsante” is included in Ozuna’s Odisea, the artist’s debut album released in 2017. That set, which included other hit songs such as “Se Preparó” and “Dile Que Tu Me Quieres,” peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard 200. Over on Top Latin Albums, it peaked at No. 1 for a whopping 46 weeks, his longest leading album on the tally. Odisea still ties with Bad Bunny’s X100PRE for the fourth-most weeks at No. 1 among all albums since the chart launched in 1993.

In November, Ozuna released his latest album, titled Cosmo, a semi-surprise release that was announced just three days before its release date on Nov. 17. The LP secured him his seventh straight top 10 set on the Top Latin Albums chart.

Selena Gomez Shares Sweet Photos From Benny Blanco’s Cookbook Party: ‘So Proud’

Selena Gomez is a proud girlfriend. In honor of Benny Blanco‘s new cookbook Open Wide hitting shelves Tuesday (April 30), the singer-actress shared a trio of adorable photos from the producer’s launch party on Instagram.

In the first snap, the Rare Beauty founder kneels down to take a bite directly out of a realistic cake made to look like Blanco’s new book, featuring the newly minted author on the cover. In the second photo, she and her beau sit together while admiring the confection, while the third picture finds the couple posing sweetly for the camera, Blanco’s arms wrapped around Gomez.

“So proud of @itsbennyblanco – Open Wide is out now!!” the Only Murders in the Building star captioned the post.

Trending on Billboard

“life is better when i’m w u,” Blanco wrote in the comments.

The cookbook release is an extra special occasion for the pair — who started dating in June — as Blanco has been open about the fact that he and his superstar girlfriend bonded over their love of food. You could even say that cooking is their love language — earlier this week, the “Eastside” musician took followers through the process of cooking Gomez a romantic dinner, which he left at her bedside with a note reading, “I love you! Sleep well! I made you steak.”

He also said in a recent Wall Street Journal interview that he and Gomez enjoy making lavish dinners for their families. Blanco went on to tell the publication that he was “the last one to know” he had feelings for the Wizards of Waverly Place star, adding, “It’s crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes, and you don’t even notice, and then you have that Clueless moment where you’re like, ‘Wait, I’m in love.’”

Shenseea Looks Back on Career-Shifting Ye Collab: ‘It Has Led Me to a Lot of Open Doors’

Summer is quickly approaching, and dancehall princess Shenseea is here to deliver the soundtrack to the warmest months of 2024. Ahead of the release of her sophomore studio album, Never Gets Late Here (out May 24), Shenseea stopped by Billboard News to reflect on how she’s approached collaborating with other artists throughout her career.

“It helps me to get over my nerves,” she muses. “I feel like artists [are] easily intimidated by others’ success. Not to be badminded, not like that vibe, more of like, ‘Whoa, this is the pressure to have when somebody who’s this successful in the industry [is here.] What do I bring to the table?’”

Alpha, Shenseea’s debut studio LP, boasted collaborations with a slew of chart-topping artists, including 21 Savage, Beenie Man, Megan Thee Stallion, Offset, Sean Paul and Tyga. That set peaked at No. 2 on Top Reggae Albums and at No. 3 on Heatseekers Albums. Prior to Alpha, the Jamaican powerhouse began her crossover endeavors by throwing assists to American artists such as Masego, Christina Aguilera and Kanye “Ye” West.

“You will never know until you do it,” she says. “Doing it over time and taking on the challenge over and over and just trying to be myself, it helps that there’s nothing I can’t take on.”

Later in her conversation with Billboard News — which also traced the creation of her new LP, how she learned to harmonize and some of her earliest musical memories — Shenseea expounded on her career shifting link-up with Ye. The two artists joined forces alongside Roddy Ricch on “Pure Souls,” a track from the “All of the Lights” rapper’s Billboard 200-topping Donda album, which earned all three artists nominations for album of the year at the 2022 Grammys.

“One of the moments I knew things changed was when I did the collaboration with Kanye,” Shenseea gushes. “I felt like that opened a whole different type of doors — fashion, hip-hop, different artists just reaching out. I think that Kanye is cool, as much as how he’s artistic, he’s a cool person to look at. Always entertaining. I feel like me being associated with him, it has led me to a lot of open doors.”

Ahead of its full release later this month, Shenseea has delivered a few tastes of Never Gets Late Here. On Tuesday (April 30), she unveiled the LP’s full tracklist, revealing forthcoming collaborations with Coi Leray, Anitta and Wizkid. The set’s lead single, “Hit & Run” (with Masicka and Di Genius), has amassed nearly 40 million views on YouTube for its official music video.

SAG-AFTRA Members Ratify Sound Recordings Contract, Providing Key AI Guardrails

SAG-AFTRA members have voted to ratify the 2024 Sound Recordings Code which requires the record labels — Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Disney Music Group — to abide by its AI safety rules. Notably, these are the first-ever explicitly defined compensation requirements for the release of sound recordings containing AI voices.

With a vote of 97.69% to 2.31%, SAG-AFTRA members, which include actors as well as singers and recording artists, now will receive this protections, effective immediately, for the term of 2021-2026. Now, the term “artist,” “singer” and “royalty artist” under this agreement only can refer to human talent. “Clear and conspicuous” consent is required prior to the release of a sound recording that uses a digital replication of an artist’s voice.

Artists who are replicated are also entitled to receive specific details about the replica’s intended use and to minimum compensation. Compensation for artists must align with the royalty share the artist would earn on other sound recordings under their contract, and sessions singers must receive a minimum of three sides per project. A minimum of 28 hours notice of any recording session for the purpose of creating a digital replica is expected and that session time should be paid as work time.

Trending on Billboard

Additionally, blanket consent for digital or AI replication is prohibited. Instead, record labels must obtain consent on a per-project basis — a provision which will prevent labels from asking artists to sign away their digital likeness for lengthy terms as part of their deals.

In the year since Ghostwriter’s fake-Drake song “Heart On My Sleeve” brought conversations about AI voices to the forefront, little has been done to actually enforce the protection of artists’ identities. While the federal government is considering a few bills (like the draft NO FAKES Act and the NO AI FRAUD Act) to create a nationwide right of publicity that would create uniform protection for artists’ names, images, and voices, these protections, for now, remain a patchwork of varying state laws that were largely written before artificial intelligence presented new use cases for AI.

“Singers and recording artists have a profound impact on our culture, and I’m thrilled that they’ve achieved a contract that not only recognizes their value with significant wage increases, but also provides them essential protections around artificial intelligence,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “We celebrate our human performers! I applaud the negotiating committee and staff, the record labels, and SAG-AFTRA members for getting this contract across the finish line!”

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said, “This contract secures groundbreaking A.I. guardrails while also achieving crucial and substantial wage increases, and other key wins for singers and recording artists. Protecting human artistry will always be SAG-AFTRA’s priority, and I’m heartened that our members have a contract that provides immediate gains and recognizes the importance of human contributions to the industry. I also want to acknowledge Negotiating Committee Chair Dan Navarro and the entire committee and staff for their outstanding and dedicated work in achieving this agreement.”

Sound Recordings Code Negotiating Committee Chair Dan Navarro said, “Members’ feedback played a key role in the formation of this contract and the negotiating committee prioritized the concerns that were most crucial to the singers and recording artists impacted by these terms. We’re proud to have achieved these essential wins in A.I. protections along with substantial wage increases and gains in health and retirement funding.”

Other wins included wage increases and gains in health and retirement funding. To read the full list of provisions, see here.
