Imagine Dragons, J Balvin Come Together In ‘Eyes Closed’ Remix: Watch

Imagine Dragons have released a remix of their new single “Eyes Closed” featuring an unexpected guest: Colombian reggaetón star J Balvin, rapping in Spanish and delivering some of his best lyrics in recent memory.

The pairing brings additional edge, bass and an increased touch of menace and grit to an anthemic track. The original “Eyes Closed” is vintage Imagine Dragons in its strong, can-do lyrics and rousing motto: “I can do this with my eyes closed.” It also maintains the band’s melodic essence, but goes further, adding some industrial production and even a touch of beats and raps.

J Balvin’s participation kicks things off in a higher gear with a more aggressive attitude. “Eyes Closed” is all about returning from the dead, more powerful than before (“I’ve been broken down and beat up, but I still get ahead,” sings Dan Reynolds).

For Balvin, who had a series of setbacks, the message is particularly appropriate and he takes on the challenge with gusto and bravado, rapping to Imagine Dragons’ rock beats and delivering lines like: “La tormenta no ha podido sacudir mis palmas […]Los que dieron la espalda se les vio la falda […] Si la fe es creer antes de ver, parcero, yo no nací pa perder” (The storm has shaken my palm trees; those who turned their backs on me showed their real colors […] if having faith means believing before seeing, parcero, I wasn’t born to lose.”

Morgan Wallen Brings Hits and Heart to Headlining Nissan Stadium Show in Nashville

There are stadium headliners, and then there are stadium-headlining artists capable of drawing in nearly 70,000 fans each evening, over multiple nights.

Just two years ago, Morgan Wallen sold out three concerts at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. On Thursday night (May 2), Wallen brought a cascade of hit songs to Music City’s biggest stage, Nissan Stadium, for the first of three headlining concerts (May 2-4) at the venue as part of his massive One Night at a Time tour—the same stadium where pop queen Taylor Swift held court for three nights last year.

In the process, this stadium headliner from Sneedville, Tennessee, who has six nominations heading into the Academy of Country Music Awards later this month, offered a premier display of his entertainer of the year-worthy credentials.

Following opening sets from Nate Smith, Lauren Watkins and Bailey Zimmerman, Wallen walked out to the music of “Broadway Girls,” and amid billows of smoke and fire, along with a screen lit up in bold neon red. He opened his show with “Ain’t That Some,” making his way to very front to prowl the edge of the stage, infusing his show with audience-connecting energy from the opening notes.

“It feels good to be home, man,” Wallen greeted the crowd, eliciting cheers. “Me and the boys, we’ve had this one circled on the calendar for a long time,” he said, giving praise to his crew members, before adding, “It’s an honor and privilege to be singing in Nashville, Tennessee tonight.”

He sailed through songs that have sent his albums including Dangerous: The Double Album and One Thing at a Time to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart for multiple weeks, including “I Wrote the Book,” “One Thing at a Time,” the Allman Brothers “Midnight Rider”-interpolated song “Everything I Love,” “7 Summers” and his 19-week Hot Country Songs chart leader “You Proof.”

He had bleachers set up as a backdrop for his song “’98 Braves,” as he related to the crowd the story of a high school baseball coach who kept him from being kicked off the team.

“There have been so many people in my life that have never given up on me,” Wallen said.

He often ran the length of the catwalk stage with an athlete’s stamina, offering a slate of songs such as “Whiskey Friends,” “Man Made a Bar” (sans collaborator Eric Church), “Wasted on You,” and the singalong “This Bar.”

Often his songs meshed imagery of heartbreak, alcohol-fueled partying and rural living with pop/hip-hop rhythms, coalescing into communal rallying cries that reverberated through the stadium.

Nearly midway through his set, he left he main stage, walking through the throng of fans in the stadium, shaking hands as he made his way to an intimate stage at the back of the venue.

He talked about his journey from playing bars and clubs to his current stadium-filling role, recalling how one of his favorite things about playing intimate venues was being able to look every fan in the eye.

“This is my attempt to recreate some of that,” Wallen said. From there, yearning ballads such the new “Lies, Lies, Lies,” his version of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up” or the piano ballad “Sand in My Boots,” brought his acuity as an emotional translator to the fore.

Throughout the show, wristbands worn on fans’ hands glowed in red, blue and orange hues, coordinating with the stage lights.

Extending his One Night at a Time World Tour into 2024, Wallen has already proven his status as a global artist, having previously brought his tour to New Zealand and Australia last year. The past few years of expanding his headliner-status, show by show, as well as stacking a dozen Country Airplay chart-leaders, and eight top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, have fashioned an artist with a keen sense of pacing a show and a comfortable relationship with his audience, even if that means pausing the show for a few seconds to sign posters or take photos with fans crowded against the stage.

His ace band offered crashing percussion and rock guitar-runs aplenty on hits such as “Up Down” (when he welcomed opener Zimmerman back to the stage). Later in the set, Wallen welcomed his buddy, Nashville native and fellow artist-writer ERNEST for their collaboration “Cowgirls,” before giving a shoutout to ERNEST’s new album—appropriately titled Nashville, Tennessee.

Family and friends were common ties throughout his show, as later on, the stage featured a setup that resembled Wallen’s mamaw’s house as he led into “Chasin’ You.” That modest house is also on the cover of Wallen’s One Thing at a Time album.

“Y’all know how much my family means to me…they’ve been with me through this whole weird, crazy ride we’ve been on,” Wallen said, recalling how his mamaw helped raise him, his cousins and sisters. He recalled that she got to see him play one bigger show—a fair in East Tennessee to about 7,000 people.

“Thank you for allowing me and my family to do this, it’s something I feel honored to do,” he told the audience.

Meanwhile, the massive screen wrapped around the entire stage from above, offering a theatre-style view to the audience around the stadium. Prior to the show, those screens highlighted Wallen’s growing business ventures including his upcoming Nashville bar and his Field & Stream venture with Eric Church. Earlier, fans could visit the Field & Stream pop-up booth set up just outside the stadium’s main entrance.

But during his set, Wallen was all about fitting in as much music as possible. He concluded his show with songs including “More Than My Hometown,” and his breakthrough 2019 hit “Whiskey Glasses.”

“Thank you very much Nashville!” he concluded as he left the stage, leaving the fans chanting his name as another round of fire popped into the air.

A few moments later, those fans were rewarded, as their wristbands began glowing anew, drawing a new round of cheers, as Wallen returned to the stage for “Thinkin’ Bout Me,” “Last Night” and brought things full-circle, returning to the beginning with his debut single, 2016’s “The Way I Talk.”

“God bless all of yall,” he said, shouting out each of his opening acts, his band and his crew and ending with a series of thank yous to the crowd, before promising, “See you next time.” But instead of heading for the exit, Wallen took his time making his way around the stage perimeter to sign shirts and posters and shake hands with the fans that have helped build his stadium-sized career.

Australia’s Senior Managers Present ‘Michael’s Rule’ to Help Promote Local Music

Australia’s music community has reached a “crisis” point, as myriad factors contribute to the closure of grassroots venues and popular festivals, and a generation of homegrown artists are essentially overlooked and locked out of the sales charts.

Artist managers are proposing a solution.

Announced Friday (May 3), the Association of Artist Managers (AAM) unveils “Michael’s Rule,” a policy that would ensure at least one local artist would be among the support acts on every international tour of these parts.

The campaign bears the name of Michael McMartin, the late, great artist manager who guided the career of Hoodoo Gurus for more than 40 years, and is broken down into three main tenets: every international artist must include an Australian artist among their opening acts; the Australian artist must appear on the same stage at the international artist using reasonable sound and lighting; and the Australian artist must be announced at the same time as the tour so that they benefit from all the marketing and promotion.

Trending on Billboard

The Rule came from a discussion amongst senior members of the artist management fraternity in the lead-in to the 2024 AAM Awards in Sydney, and is born out of the frustration at the limited options for the discoverability of artists in Australia.

These challenges have been recognized by governments across Australia in recent years, notes Maggie Collins, executive director of the AAM, the trade body that represents more than 300 artist managers.

“Promoters received significant public funding during the pandemic and they understandably continue to receive public support for some of their major events,” she explains in a statement. “We think it is only reasonable that, in return, they should ‘do their bit’ to help give Australian artists a leg up by the simple means of including at least one local act on every international tour.”

Collins used the platform of the 2024 AAM Awards to present “Michael’s Rule.”

“If there’s one overarching issue that managers have been flagging time and time again, it is this: we need more Australians loving more Australian music. We have a major discoverability problem and if we don’t solve this issue, which is both economical and cultural,” she explained to a full house at Sydney’s Crowbar.

Had “Michael’s Rule” existed for major international tours, such as Taylor Swift’s seven-date The Eras Tour, which visited Sydney and Melbourne in 2023, “how many more fans could we have introduced to a local artist and started creating our own megastar of the future.”

The support act rule had once been a widely accepted industry code after lobbying by artist managers in the early 2000s. With the launch of “Michael’s Rule,” a voluntary code, senior artist managers call for its reintroduction “at this time of crisis for Australian music,” reads a statement from AAM.

If promoters are not willing to agree, the trade body insists it make formal representations for federal government to step in and make it a condition of issuing visas that international artists touring Australia must comply.

Labels body ARIA welcomes “Michael’s Rule.” “Doing whatever we can to get our local artists in front of new audiences is the most important issue facing our local industry,” says ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd in a separate media release, “and as such the Michael’s Rule is a fantastic initiative, which we are confident can be implemented in a way that doesn’t impact the viability of international touring.”

ARIA’s latest year-end charts spelled out the problem. Just four Australian albums cracked the top 100 last year, led by INXS hits collection The Very Best (at No. 58), and only three Australian-made singles impacted the top 100, none of which were released in 2023. The best-placed Australian track was The Kid Laroi’s 2021 collaboration with Justin Bieber, “Stay.”

Other initiatives, including “looking to broaden venues like sports stadiums to multi-use facilities in NSW is a really important step to increase the availability of entertainment for everyone outside of sport,” adds Herd, “and continue to increase opportunities to see local artists alongside global icons.”

The unveiling of the industry code closely follows the announcement that Brisbane’s The Zoo, one of the country’s longest-operating grassroots music venues, would close its doors due to crushing financial pressures, and a string of music festivals, including Splendour in the Grass, would skip this year – or close for good.

BOYNEXTDOOR’s ‘How?’ Makes Top 10 Debut on Album Sales Chart

BOYNEXTDOOR scores its second top 10, and highest-charting album yet, on Billboard’s Top Album Sales ranking as How? enters at No. 7 on the May 4-dated chart. The set launches with 11,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending April 25, according to Luminate – the act’s best sales week ever. The South Korean pop ensemble previously visited the top 10 with the No. 10-peaking Why in 2023.

Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart: Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department makes a smashing debut at No. 1, Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter bows at No. 2 and Anne Wilson’s Rebel starts at No. 10.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Of the 11,000 copies sold of How?, physical sales comprise essentially all of that sum – and all from the CD configuration. The album’s sales were supported by its availability across 17 different collectible CD packages, including exclusive variants for Barnes & Noble, Target and Walmart. All editions contained branded paper merchandise, including some randomized items.

At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department swoops in with a whopping 1.914 million copies sold in its first week. It’s Swift’s 14th No. 1. That volume marks Swift’s best sales week ever, and the third-largest sales week for any album since Luminate began electronically tracking sales in 1991. The set’s sales were bolstered by its availability across 19 different collectible physical editions (nine CDs, six vinyl LPs and four cassettes, some of which were exclusive to Target and Swift’s webstore) and two digital download albums. Some of the physical iterations of the album contained branded merchandise.

Swift has half of the top 10 on new Top Album Sales chart, as Poets is joined by her former No. 1s Lover (rising 8-3 with 14,000; up 79%), 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (10-4 with 13,000; up 100%), Midnights (11-5 with 12,000; up 130%) and Folklore (13-9 with 10,000; up 112%).

Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter debuts at No. 2 with 52,000 copies (with 24,000 on vinyl), marking the 18th top 10-charting effort for the band. Dark Matter’s first-week sales got a boost from its availability across 12 different color vinyl variants.

Beyoncé’s former No. 1 Cowboy Carter falls 1-6 in its fourth week on the list, selling a little over 11,000 copies (down 59%). Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon rises 35-8 with nearly 11,000 sold (up 329%), largely thanks to sales generated by the April 19 release of a collector’s edition of the album on 180-gram crystal clear double vinyl.

Anne Wilson’s new Rebel rounds out the top 10 of Top Album Sales, as the set starts at No. 10 with 10,000 copies sold. It’s the second top 10-charting effort, and best sales week, for the artist. The album’s sales were supported by its availability across four vinyl variants and five CD variants (three of which were signed by the artist).

4batz Drops Debut Mixtape ‘U Made Me a St4r’: Stream It Now

4batz has finally dropped his debut mixtape U Made Me a St4r on Friday (May 3).

The mixtape features previously released singles “Act I: Stickerz ’99,’” “Act II: Date @ 8,” “Act III: On God (She Like),” and “Act V: There Goes Another Vase.” Drake hopped on the remix for his viral smash “Act II: Date @ 8,” catapulting the track to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also topped Hot R&B Songs (chart dated March 23), ending a historic run for SZA, who had reigned atop the chart for 53 weeks with four songs – “Kill Bill,” “Snooze,” Drake’s “Slime You Out” (which features SZA) and “Saturn.”

There are four more “acts” on the project — “Act IV: Fckin U (18+),” “Act VI: Mad Man,” “Act VII: All We Do Is Argue, Argue” and “Act VIII: I Hate to Be Alone” — as well as an intro (“Umademeast4r.mp3), “Get Out Yo Feelings Ho” and a bonus track, “Ong? (she like) remix” with Ye (formerly known as Kanye West).

4batz revealed the title of his debut project in his Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month interview in March. “I remember listening to Aaliyah. [Sings] ‘Rock the boat, rock the boat.’ And I’m throwing up gang signs. And I’m like, ‘Why am I doing that? Why does this yin-yang factor feel so good to me?’” he said at the time about shocking people online with his sound compared to his physical aesthetic. “I was always [interested in] doing something that don’t supposed to be looking like you’re supposed to be doing it. I had a feeling it was going to do something. I didn’t know it was gonna do this!”

Dua Lipa’s ‘Radical Optimism’ Is Here: Stream It Now

Dua Lipa is in a happier era, and that’s reflected on her brand new album, Radical Optimism, which arrived on Friday (May 3).

The 11-track Radical Optimism — Lipa’s first proper LP since 2020’s Future Nostalgia — features previously released singles “Houdini,” “Training Season” and “Illusion.” “[Releasing the album] feels good. It feels for lack of a better word — radically optimistic,” she previously told Billboard, before explaining the idea behind the album cover, which features the singer floating in a wide open ocean facing a shark fin. “Throughout the whole record, there’s this idea of chaos happening around and me trying to push through it in a way that feels authentic and honest to me.”

The 28-year-old singer also opened up about the newly released album to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe earlier in the week, and revealed which track resonates with her the most at the moment. “With this album, I feel like I’ve managed to put so much more honesty out there, and be really open in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever had the chance to,” she shared. “There’s this one song, which is the last song in the album called ‘Happy for You.’ And I love that song because, to me, it’s about seeing someone who you were with move on, and be really happy for them. And I probably wouldn’t have been able to write that song on my first or second record because I don’t feel like I probably would’ve grown as a person or as an artist to be able to see someone that you loved move on. Or I would’ve found it difficult.”

Dua Lipa’s ‘Radical Optimism’: All 11 Tracks Ranked

Dua Lipa is looking for love. Not some sort of toxic fling or fleeting romance — she wants real, old-school love. “We all got too many options/ Remember when we used to do anything for love?” she asks on “Anything for Love,” her mid-tempo breakdown track that appears toward the end of Radical Optimism, Lipa’s third studio album, which arrived at the stroke of midnight on Friday (May 3).

Love has always been at the core of Lipa’s being, stretching back to the conflicting feelings on heartbreak she expressed on her 2017 self-titled debut album with songs like the apologetic “Be the One,” the instructional “New Rules” and the carefree “IDGAF.” When 2020’s Future Nostalgia arrived, Lipa was 24 years old, and love was all about fun and relationships made her feel like “Levitating,” just like the enduring hit single captured.

However, it’s been four years since Future Nostalgia, and the pop superstar is older now. At 28 years old, she knows what she wants in a relationship and she’s ready to settle down. As she playfully put it on Radical Optimism‘s second single, “training season’s over.” She told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that, for her, maturity in love means that you learn your “non-negotiables” and how to healthily move on. “You have to be in the act of forgiveness and growing and learning, and being okay with the past in order to move on with what’s to come next,” she explained.

In many ways, Radical Optimism feels like the older sister to Future Nostalgia. She’s smarter and knows better than to let a relationship get the best of her, but she’s still a hopeless romantic that’s holding out for that forever love she’s looking for — all while making fans dance with an infectious disco-pop beat.

While all of Radical Optimism is worth listening to, there are some clear early standouts. Here is a ranking of all 11 tracks on Dua Lipa’s latest album.

Wake Up in the Musée d’Orsay

Take your Paris trip to the next level by booking your stay at the Musée d’Orsay, a museum of fine and applied arts. It’s a literal night at the museum. Before this making, the clock at the museum’s center used to have nothing on its other side. Now, Airbnb has transformed it into a room designed by the French architect and designer of the Olympic torch, Mathieu Lehanneur, which is placed across from your bed.
