Dua Lipa Plays Surprise Pop-Up Times Square Show After ‘SNL’ Gig

Dua Lipa took one more big bite of the apple before leaving New York. After playing double duty as musical guest and host on Saturday Night Live, the singer brought her Radical Optimism vibe to Times Square for a surprise pop-up gig on Sunday night (May 5).

Playing to a packed crowd from rectangular stage set up in the heart of the city, Dua took the stage with her band and busted right into her new album single “Training Season.” Wearing a long black leather duster over a black and white patterned maxi dress, the singer showcased her new collection on the rainy evening, sliding right into pop burner “Houdini” as giant images of the show were projected onto the digital screens behind her.

“Wow, you guys are amazing, thank you so much, what an unbelievable evening,” she told the crowd. “Thank you for showing up. Thank you for braving the rain and the cold. I even saw you take your top off! It’s getting hot in here, innit?” The singer gushed about her “unbelievable” week, which included the release of the album and, not for nothing, a visit that she dubbed “the most New York experience of all-time.”

She kept things Radical by playing the LP’s closing track, the bouncy “Happy for You,” followed by her final selection, the album’s current single, “Illusion.”

Just 24 hours before, Dua became the latest musician to do a double-up on SNL, explaining the meaning behind the title of her third studio album in a monologue bit and then performing “Illusion” and “Happy for You” on the show.

Julie Andrews’ ‘Loverly’ & Totally Unique Recording Legacy

Sixty-eight years ago this week, the original cast album to the Broadway smash My Fair Lady, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, vaulted from No. 30 to No. 8 in its second week on the Billboard 200. The album logged 173 weeks in the top 10, which set a record which still stands for the longest run in the top 10 since the Billboard 200 began publishing on a regular, weekly basis in March 1956.

The astoundingly good score, composed by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, includes such standards as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” “The Rain in Spain” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly.”

Brooks Atkinson, The New York Times’ influential theater critic at the time, touted My Fair Lady as “one of the best musicals of the century” – a line that, naturally, was plastered atop the show’s theatrical poster. In most cases, extravagant praise like that would reek of hyperbole. In this case, saying “one of” showed considerable restraint. Name one musical more chock-full of famous and beloved songs.

Incredibly, Andrews played a leading role on three of the eight albums with the most weeks in the top 10. The 1965 soundtrack to The Sound of Music is in fourth place on the all-time list with 109 weeks. The 1961 Broadway cast album to Camelot is tied for seventh place with 87 weeks.

Here’s the top 10 as it currently stands. Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album, which returns to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 this week, is currently in second place.

Weeks in Top 10, Artist, Title, Year First Reached Top 10
173, Original Cast, My Fair Lady, 1956
142, Morgan Wallen, Dangerous: The Double Album, 2021
109, Soundtrack, The Sound of Music, 1965
106, Soundtrack, West Side Story, 1962
105, Original Cast, The Sound of Music, 1960
90, Soundtrack, South Pacific, 1958
87, Original Cast, Camelot, 1961
87, Soundtrack, Oklahoma!, 1956
85, Peter, Paul and Mary, Peter Paul and Mary, 1962
84, Adele, 21, 2011
84, Bruce Springsteen, Born in the U.S.A., 1984

Andrews has had a very unique history on the Billboard charts. She starred in two Broadway musicals with cast albums that topped the Billboard 200, as well as two films with soundtracks that topped that chart, but her only album under her own name to make the chart is Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, the soundtrack to a 1962 TV special in which she starred with another future legend, Carol Burnett. It peaked at No. 85.

Andrews has also had only one entry on the Billboard Hot 100, “Super-cali-fragil-istic-expi-ali-docious,” a novelty song from Mary Poppins on which she teamed with Dick Van Dyke and The Pearlies. The tongue-twister single reached No. 66 in 1965.

Andrews had a glorious singing voice, but for some reason it didn’t translate to the pop music world. Still, her work in soundtracks and cast albums can’t be denied.

In 2011, Andrews received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy. She was part of a wildly diverse class that also included country queen Dolly Parton, punk band The Ramones, pop-folk trio The Kingston Trio, gospel singer George Beverly Shea, classical ensemble Juilliard String Quartet and jazz drummer Roy Haynes.

Andrews attended the Special Merit Awards ceremony in Los Angeles to receive her lifetime achievement award on Feb. 12, 2011. Making it even sweeter, the following night, she won a competitive Grammy – her second – best spoken word album for children for Julie Andrews’ Collection of Poems, Songs and Lullabies. She won the award alongside her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton.

Andrews’ generations-spanning appeal was seen in 2015, when Lady Gaga sang four songs from The Sound of Music score on the Oscars, to mark the film’s 50th anniversary. At the end of her performance, Andrews came out from the wings and embraced her. Gaga introduced with these warm words, “Ladies and gentlemen, the incomparable Julie Andrews.”

It was also seen when the American Film Institute unveiled its roster of 25 Greatest Movie Musicals in 2006. Andrews starred in two of the top 10 musicals – The Sound of Music at No. 4 and Mary Poppins at No. 6. Gene Kelly also starred in two of their top 10 musicals (Singin’ in the Rain and An American in Paris). Judy Garland topped them both, starring in three of the top 10 (The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born and Meet Me in St. Louis.) That’s pretty good company.

Andrews is three-quarters of the way to EGOT status. She has won two Emmys, two Grammys (plus that lifetime achievement award) and an Oscar, but has yet to win a Tony, despite three nominations. (Considering that Andrews has appeared on Broadway in only four shows, to have been Tony-nominated three times is a quite a feat.) She appeared to finally be headed for a Tony win in 1996 for her lead role in the Broadway adaptation of Victor/Victoria, but when she was the only person from the show to receive a nomination, she famously declined the nod, telling a matinee audience two days after the nominations were announced: “I have searched my conscience and my heart and find that I cannot accept this nomination, and prefer instead to stand with the egregiously overlooked.”

That rather arch phrasing was mocked, but Andrews’ principled stand was admired. Andrews remained on the ballot, but having signaled disinterest in the award, it was no surprise when she lost to Donna Murphy for The King and I.

Despite that kerfuffle, Andrews remains strongly identified with Broadway. She won a Primetime Emmy in 2005 for hosting Broadway: The American Musical on PBS, which was voted outstanding non-fiction series. She has received two Grammy nominations for best traditional pop vocal performance, both for Broadway collections – Julie Andrews Broadway/Here I’ll Stay (1997) and Julie Andrews – Broadway – the Music of Richard Rodgers (1995).

Andrews has received 11 Primetime Emmy nods, spanning a remarkable 65 years. She received her first in 1958 for actress – best single performance – lead or support for Cinderella; her most recent just last year for outstanding character voice-over performance for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Andrews has received a slew of career achievement awards, including the Kennedy Center Honors (2001), a Life Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild Awards (2006) and the American Film Institute’s life achievement award (2022).

Here’s more background on the four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 on which Andrews played a lead role. They are shown in chronological order:

The Healing Power of Music (Guest Column)

In such a stressful world where mental health challenges are on the rise, it’s comforting to know that there’s a timeless, low-to-no-cost medicine that can help soothe the soul, mend a broken heart, and increase both physical and emotional well-being. That medicine is music. As a psychologist, I’ve seen firsthand the life-changing effects music can have on the lives of my patients. In times of deep despair or moments of anxiety or depression, music and its resonance in the body has had the power to heal in ways that words alone cannot.

So what is it about music that makes it such a powerful tool for healing? From a psychological perspective, music has the ability to go beyond the rational mind and access deeper layers of consciousness. According to a study in Finland, when we listen or make music, we’re not just taking in the sound through our ears; our entire brain gets involved. The study showed that music recruits the motor areas of the brain, which gets our toes tapping and our bodies swaying; lights up the emotional center of the brain, which lifts our spirits and reduces our stress levels; and activates the part of the brain which allows the mind to wander, daydream, and be creative.

When we’re depressed, grieving, or traumatized, it can be challenging to get enthusiastic about anything. And yet, when we play some music, the sound lights up our “pleasure center,” that deep part of the brain that secretes dopamine, the “feel-good” hormone. A particularly fascinating study noted that simply anticipating or remembering a certain song can boost dopamine levels. And even after listening to the song, those levels can stay elevated as long as fifteen minutes after the music ends. That means, we get to keep feeling happy longer.

Trending on Billboard

When we suffer from anxiety, fear, or panic attacks, listening to music can help calm our nervous system and decrease levels of stress hormones, like cortisol. It’s also been found to reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, and lessen physical as well as emotional pain by triggering the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. In addition, research suggests that having music play in the background while we’re doing another activity can improve our ability to focus and problem-solve, especially those with ADHD. Think of music as a tool for ultimate self-care — moments of compassion that allow for self-reflection and reconnection.

Music improves our memory

Music has the unique ability to evoke specific thoughts, emotions and memories, serving as a bridge between past and present. Anyone who has ever suffered from a break-up or lost someone they loved will recognize its power to access these moments long forgotten. Listening to a certain song can transport us back to that time and place and allow us to feel it all over again. For individuals struggling with trauma or PTSD, certain songs can activate powerful thoughts and feelings, which can provide an opportunity for catharsis and healing.

Music connects us

What I love most about music is its profound impact and ability to foster connection and community. Playing music together, dancing, sharing a playlist with friends, or even attending a concert surrounded by complete strangers makes us feel part of something bigger than ourselves. In a world with so much isolation and loneliness, music serves as a unifying force that brings us together across generations, cultures, ideologies, and backgrounds, promoting trust and a sense of belonging.

Usher Plays Surprise Club Show After Last-Minute Lovers & Friends Cancellation

Usher deeply believes in the old “show must go on” maxim. After the singer got the disappointing news that his headlining gig at this weekend’s planned Lovers & Friends Festival 2024 in Las Vegas was canceled due to the threat of dangerous weather conditions, the “Confessions” star found another way to celebrate.

According to the Las Vegas Journal-Review, after the festival slated to draw more than 65,000 fans to the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on Saturday was scotched due to threats of high winds, Usher packed up his planned “Bad Girl: 20 Years of Confessions” celebration and moved it indoors to the more intimate 1,900-capacity Jewel at Aria Hotel club.

The paper said Ush’s first show in Vegas since his killer Super Bowl headlining show at Allegiant Stadium across town earlier this year found him playing a medley of hits to a packed club that including guest spots by his good friends Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon and Victoria Monét, who slipped into the DJ booth for a bit. The paper said other A-listers on hand included Real Housewives of Beverly Hills co-star Crystal Kung Minkoff, as well as the Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean and Howie Dorough and Kandi Burruss, among others.

TMZ reported that Usher arrived in an all-white outfit around three hours after the festival cancellation, with Lil Jon joining him for “Lovers and Friends,” the rapper’s 2004 Crunk Juice single that also featured Luda.

In addition to Usher, the Lovers show was slated to feature sets from the Backstreet Boys, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Ludacris and many more. Shortly after organizers said the one-day festival was going to be called of over weather, Usher shared a message with fans expressing his disappointment.

“Mannn… I’m just as disappointed as you are. We were getting ready to turn up and celebrate today. I have to follow the orders of city officials and the National Weather Service for everyone’s protection and stand strong in my belief that everything happens for a reason,” Usher tweeted. “I’m sorry we won’t get to see each other today, but know that I am always working on something to express my heartfelt gratitude for each and every one of you who continue to support me.”

Fans who purchased their Lovers & Friends tickets directly through Front Gate Tickets will receive a refund within 30 days, organizers said.

The show announced on Monday morning (May 6) is a one-night-only affair that comes after Lana crushed it at this year’s Coachella following a sold-out amphitheater run and a two-night run at Mexico City’s Foro Sol last summer where she played to 65,000 each night.

Tickets for the Fenway show will be available starting with an artist presale on Wednesday (May 8) starting at 10 a.m., with the general onsale kicking off on Friday (May 10) at 10 a.m. local time here.

LDR hung around the Indio Valley after Coachella to make two unannounced appearances at the Stagecoach Festival, last weekend. While there, she joined Paul Cauthen on stage for a moving rendition of “Unchained Melody,” the classic ballad that became an iconic hit for the Righteous Brothers in 1965.

Del Rey, who is prepping a country album called Lassosang “Unchained Melody” last year for NBC holiday special celebrating the legacy of Elvis Presley, Christmas at Graceland and Cauthen previously covered the song with masked country crooner Orville Peck, with the pair calling themselves The Unrighteous Brothers.

That unexpected treat came after Del Rey invited a surprise guest up during her second Coachella weekend on April 19 when Camila Cabello popped up to sing her frenetic new single, “I Luv It,” as LDR momentarily ceded the spotlight to the former Fifth Harmony star and her backup dancers. “I luv it, I luv it, I luv it, I luv it,” Del Rey sang to Cabello after she closed the song. “This is my girl. I have so much fun with her. I love this song to death. Thank you so much, angel, for coming to sing with me,” Del Rey told Cabello.

At press time no support acts had been announced for the Fenway show.

Drake Dissects Kendrick Lamar & Clears the Air With ‘The Heart Part 6’: Listen

Drake has made his own entry into Kendrick Lamar’s famed The Heart series with the defensive “The Heart Part 6” on Sunday (May 5).

The Aretha Franklin-sampling diss hit YouTube on Sunday night (May 5) with cover art featuring an Instagram comment made by Dave Free of a black heart and hand-heart on an Instagram photo posted by Kendrick’s fiancée Whitney Alford with their children.

Drake continued to double down on domestic violence allegations against the Compton rapper as well as Lamar’s manager, Dave Free, allegedly fathering an illegitimate child with Whitney. (Whitney is following Free on IG but not Lamar).

“And why isn’t Whitney denying all of the allegations/ Why is she following Dave Free and not Mr. Morale/ You haven’t seen the kids in six months, the distance is wild/ Dave leaving heart emojis underneath pics of the child,” he raps.

Trending on Billboard

The 6 God then changed focus to debunk claims of pedophilia made by Lamar in previous tracks such as “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us.”

“Speaking of anything with a child, let’s get to that now/ This Epstein angle was the shit I expected/ TikTok videos you collected and dissected/ Instead of being on some dis-direct s–t/ You rather f—ing grab your pen and misdirect s–t,” he contests.

He continued later into “The Heart Part 6” referencing his friendship with 20-year-old Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown. “Only f—–g with Whitney’s, not Millie Bobby Brown’s, I’d never look twice at no teenager,” Drizzy declares.

As far as the allegations of having a secret 11-year-old daughter he was hiding from the world that Kendrick rapped about on “Meet the Grahams,” Drake claimed that OVO actually planted the story as bait to trick the former TDE rapper, which Lamar took and ran with.

“We plotted for a week and then we fed you the information/ A daughter that’s eleven years old, I bet he takes it/ We thought about givin’ a fake name or a destination,” he recalls.

Drake finished out the five-minute marathon speaking directly to Kendrick while seemingly being disappointed in the alleged lies he’s spewing in the feud as he claims his bars have been straight facts.

“You would be a worthy competitor if I was really a predator and you weren’t f—–g lying to every blog or an editor but, it is what it is,” he raps with a sigh.

Metro Boomin isn’t backing down from dissing Drake as he reacted to “The Heart Part 6” with a Chris Paul meme essentially saying the OVO boss is still down a ton of points in the battle with K. Dot.

“The Heart Part 6” follows Drake’s “Family Matters” with his Kendrick Lamar diss track entries.

Lamar didn’t give Drizzy’s “Family Matters” even an hour of the spotlight before returning fire with the scathing “Meet the Grahams” Friday night (May 3), and he followed up with the Mustard-produced “Not Like Us” less than 24 hours later.

It’s anyone’s guess where this goes from here with both rappers digging their heels in and firing at-will to close out a historic hip-hop weekend.

Drake Hits Back With “The Heart Part 6” Track, Xitter Examines The Bars

Cleveland Cavaliers v Houston Rockets

Drake has responded to Kendrick Lamar as some expected with “The Heart Part 6,” adding new fuel to their explosive feud. In the track, the Canadian superstar addresses the accusations of being romantically involved with minors and more and fans on Xitter are wondering if it’s enough.

I want to speak as myself for a minute and express that I have never cared less about a rap beef. I find nothing exciting, interesting, or enthralling about two Black titans of the culture fighting and exposing each other. What is the end goal? It does nothing for the greater good. And, as Vince Stapes said, this is only aiding a particular segment of the industry and certainly not the creators. Anyway, let’s get into this newest salvo from Drake.

Titling the response “The Heart Part 6” is clearly taking a page out of Kendrick Lamar and his “The Heart” series, and directly addresses some of the heinous acts that K-Dot accused Drizzy of.

From “The Heart Part 6”:

The Pulitzer Prize winner is definitely spiralin’
I got your fucking lines tapped, I swear that I’m dialed in
First, I was a rat, so where’s the proof of the trial then?
Where’s the paperwork or the cabinet it’s filed in?
1090 Jake would’ve took all the walls down
The streets would’ve had me hidin’ out in a small town
My Montreal connects stand up, not fall down
The ones that you’re gettin’ your stories from, they all clowns
I am a war gеneral, seasoned in prеparation
My jacket is covered in medals, honor and decoration
You waited for this moment, overcome with the desperation
We plotted for a week and then we fed you the information
A daughter that’s eleven years old, I bet he takes it
We thought about giving a fake name or a destination
But you so thirsty, you not concerned with investigation
Instead you in Advantage Studio, it’s a celebration

Considering that Kendrick Lamar seemingly has a lot of contempt for Drake, most fans are expecting a response from that side very soon. As it stands, fans of the pair of siding with their faves while detractors are taking their positions as expected. We’ve got reactions from X, formerly Twitter, from all sides below along with the track in question.
