Paul McCartney Unveils Archival ‘Beatlemania’ Exhibit at Brooklyn Museum: See His Personal Photos

When Beatlemania first swept the United States in 1964, a moment pinpointed in time by the band’s first-ever televised performance on The Ed Sullivan Show that February, only four people knew exactly what it was like to be at the center of such a revolutionary cultural frenzy: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Now, almost exactly 60 years later, American fans are getting the rare chance to see behind the curtain of The Beatles’ unprecedented rise to fame, all thanks to McCartney documenting the period with his personal Pentax film camera more than half a century ago. Upon being recovered from the living legend’s archives, more than 250 of his photographs were put on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London last year – and now, they’ve made their way to the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.

Unveiled Friday (May 3), Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm takes outsiders into the Liverpool native’s surreal reality when he was just 21 years old, on the precipice of becoming one of four of the biggest music stars history has ever seen. The immersive exhibit — a sample of which you can see below — also features video footage and archival materials and traces The Beatles’ ascent from touring at small concert halls in England to dodging hordes of rabid fans and paparazzi in the States.

“Since first arriving in New York in February 1964, Paul McCartney has built a strong, everlasting connection to the city,” says Catherine Futter, the Brooklyn Museum’s director of curatorial affairs and senior curator of decorative arts, in a statement. “His vibrant photographs from The Beatles’ first visit capture the energy of the city, the excitement of the American fans, and the frenzy of the band’s status as celebrities.”

“Yet the images also record The Beatles’ fun and delight with each other,” Futter adds. “Through McCartney’s lens, we feel the intensity of being at the center of such extraordinary events.”

The collection is now available to visit at the Brooklyn Museum through August 18, 2024. Check out a selection of McCartney’s rare photographs below.

14 American Songs That Burna Boy Has Sampled or Interpolated

Many of Burna’s most celebrated songs have borrowed elements from some recognizable U.S. pop, soul and hip-hop favorites.

A common theme in Burna Boy‘s discography is his expert lifting of R&B, rap and pop records over the years — with a couple of oldies but goodies.

At the 2024 Grammy Awards in February, he performed his Grammy-nominated hit “Sittin’ on Top of the World” with 21 Savage, who’s featured on the remix, and Brandy, whose 26-year-old track “Top of the World” is famously sampled on Burna’s song. The Afro-fusion superstar also notably sampled Toni Braxton‘s hit “He Wasn’t Man Enough” on his 2022 summer smash “Last Last.” Rodney “Darkchild” Jenkins, Fred Jerkins III and LaShawn Daniels all earned credits on “Sittin’ on Top of the World” and “Last Last” since they co-wrote both “Top of the World” and “He Wasn’t Man Enough.”

Naughty by Nature‘s 1999 hit “Jamboree” plays a part in not just one Burna record, but two: The Nigerian singer-songwriter borrowed elements from “Collateral Damage” in 2019 and did it again one year later on “Naughty by Nature,” featuring the titular hip-hop trio. Speaking of doubles, the Sauti Sol-featuring “Time Flies” track from 2020 lifts from Sade‘s 1985 hit “The Sweetest Taboo” and Marc Anthony‘s 2002 track “I Need You.”

And Burna has an affinity for reworking Michael Jackson‘s old works, referencing The Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back” on his 2011 track “Ice Cream Man” and “Dirty Diana” on the Chris Martin-assisted “Monsters You Made” in 2020.

Billboard rounded up 14 American songs that Burna Boy has sampled or interpolated throughout his discography.

Jennifer Lopez is ready for the Met Gala.

The superstar and this year’s event co-chair stopped by Good Morning America on Monday morning (May 6), just hours before the prestigious red carpet at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, to preview what fans can expect from her look. “You’ll have to tune in to see,” she teased coyly. “But it’s exciting, it’s exciting. It’s a fun night for fashion.”

When asked if she’ll be “able to walk” in her outfit, the “Waiting For Tonight” singer responded, “Barely, ever. The Met Gala looks are not about comfort.”

Lopez will be co-hosting the event alongside Bad Bunny, Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth and, as usual, Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. “I was really honored to be asked to host it alongside Zendaya and Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth,” Lopez said. “Anna was gracious enough to ask me. We’re going to have a good time.”

This year’s theme, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, is set to feature 250 items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, according to an Instagram post announcing the theme back in November. “From a 17th century English Elizabethan-era bodice and Christian Dior’s famous Junon and Venus ballgowns, to 21st century acquisitions by designers including Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney, and Conner Ives, the core exhibit will span 400 years of history,” the caption reads. Tommy Lee Wins Ruling in Lawsuit Alleging 2003 Helicopter Sexual Assault

A Los Angeles judge has dismissed a lawsuit accusing Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee of sexually assaulting a woman in a helicopter in 2003, ruling that her case was filed too late.

The case against Lee, launched last year by an anonymous Jane Doe accuser, was filed under a newly enacted California law that temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for years-old sexual assaults – one of several such laws passed around the country in recent years.

But in a decision issued Monday, Judge Holly J. Fujie ruled that Lee’s accuser had failed to show that Lee’s alleged assault had been followed by any kind of “cover-up” – a key requirement under the provision she cited.

Trending on Billboard

“The court finds that plaintiff has not pled facts sufficient to support the theory of the necessary ‘cover up’ because plaintiff has not asserted facts evidencing defendants’ concerted effort to hide evidence relating to sexual assault,” the judge wrote. “Plaintiff instead makes vague allegations that the court finds insufficient to support the revival of a claim.”

Though the ruling is a setback for Lee’s accuser, the case is not yet over. The judge gave her and her attorneys 20 days to file an updated version of her complaint if she has additional information that would fix the flaws in her case. Her attorneys did not immediately return a request for comment.

In her December complaint, the Jane Doe plaintiff claimed she had been “lured under false pretenses” by Lee’s personal helicopter pilot into taking a ride from San Diego to Los Angeles in February 2003. Once onboard, she claimed that Lee and the pilot “consumed several alcoholic beverages, smoked marijuana, and snorted cocaine” before the rock star assaulted her.

“Tommy Lee then proceeded to sexually assault plaintiff by forcibly groping, kissing, penetrating her with his fingers, and attempting to force her to perform oral copulation,” her lawyers wrote. “As a result of Tommy Lee’s sexual assault, Plaintiff has suffered severe emotional, physical, and psychological distress.”

The case, over an incident that allegedly occurred more than two decades ago, was filed under the Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act – a California law that created a three-year window starting last year for alleged survivors to file sexual assault lawsuits that would normally be barred by the statute of limitations.

The case against Lee was one of many cases filed during the “look-back windows” created by similar statutes, including New York’s Adult Survivors Act. Just before that law expired in November, a flood of years-old abuse cases hit the courts, most notably against Sean “Diddy” Combs.

But such laws have strict requirements. In the case of the Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act, an alleged victim must show that the defendant “engaged in a cover up or attempted a cover up,” meaning a “concerted effort to hide evidence relating to a sexual assault or other inappropriate conduct” or conduct that “incentivizes individuals to remain silent.”

In her complaint, Lee’s accuser claimed that the drummer and other defendants “engaged in a concerted effort to prevent information or evidence of such sexual assaults from being made public or disclosed to anyone.” But in her ruling on Monday, Judge Fujie said that simply spelling out the statute’s requirement was not enough.

“These allegations are conclusory in nature and do not allege specific actions directed to plaintiff,” the judge wrote. “As such, plaintiff’s action as alleged is effectively time-barred.”

In a statement to Billboard, Lee’s attorney Sasha Frid said: “We applaud the court’s decision. The court got it right in finding that the plaintiff cannot assert a claim against Tommy Lee. From the outset, Mr. Lee has vehemently denied these false and bogus accusations.”

Taylor Swift & Post Malone’s ‘Fortnight’ Adds Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard Global Charts

Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, remains the biggest song in the world, as it scores a second week at No. 1 both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. The song is from her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which logs a second week at No. 1 on the U.S.-based Billboard 200.

Plus, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby” and ZICO’s “Spot!,” featuring JENNIE, of BLACKPINK, all make top 10 moves on the global surveys.

Trending on Billboard

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which began in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

“Fortnight” notches a second week atop the Global 200, with 99.8 million streams (down 44%) and 10,000 sold (down 63%) worldwide April 26-May 2.

Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” percolates 17-2 on the Global 200, two weeks after it entered the chart at No. 10, becoming her first top 10. It drew 85.8 million streams (up 35%) and sold 6,000 (up 18%) worldwide in the latest tracking week.

Artemas’ “I Like the Way You Kiss Me” jumps 10-3 on the Global 200, after previously reaching No. 2; Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” bounds 12-4, following seven weeks on top beginning in February; and Hozier’s  “Too Sweet” soars 13-5, rebounding two weeks after hitting No. 1.

Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” roars 33-6 on the Global 200 with 56.4 million streams (up 68%) and 25,000 sold (up 48%) worldwide, marking his first top 10. The single interpolates J-Kwon’s 2004 hip-hop hit “Tipsy.”

Also new in the Global 200’s top 10, Tommy Richman’s first entry on the chart, “Million Dollar Baby,” launches at No. 10 with 50.5 million streams and 4,000 sold worldwide following its April 26 release, after the signee to Brent Faiyaz’s imprint had teased it on TikTok.

On the Global Excl. U.S. chart, “Fortnight” leads for a second week, with 62.7 million streams (down 38%) and 4,000 sold (down 51%) outside the U.S.

Artemas’ “I Like the Way You Kiss Me” keeps at No. 2 on Global Excl. U.S., after a week at No. 1 two weeks earlier, and Carpenter’s “Espresso” becomes her first top 10 on the chart (14-3) with 55.6 million streams (up 40%) and 2,000 sold (up 26%) outside the U.S.

FloyyMenor and Cris Mj’s “Gata Only” descends to No. 4 from its No. 3 Global Excl. U.S. high and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” holds at No. 5, after eight nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 starting in February.

Plus, ZICO’s “Spot!,” featuring JENNIE, premieres at No. 8 on Global Excl. U.S. with 44.5 million streams and 4,000 sold outside the U.S. Rapper/producer ZICO earns his first entry on the chart as a recording artist — while JENNIE, also from South Korea, adds her third top 10 as a soloist, after “One of the Girls,” with The Weeknd and Lily Rose Depp, reached No. 5 in February and “You & Me” opened at No. 1 last October. BLACKPINK, with JENNIE as a member, has tallied four top 10s, including three No. 1s.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated May 11, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, May 7. For both charts, the top 100 titles are available to all readers on Billboard.com, while the complete 200-title rankings are visible on Billboard Pro, Billboard’s subscription-based service. Britney Spears Gives an Update on Injured Foot After Hotel Incident: ‘I Might Have to Get Surgery’

Britney Spears is giving fans an update on her injured foot following last week’s accident at the Chateau Marmont, revealing in a new Instagram post that she may need surgery to fix it.

Captioning a short video of clips from a recent horseback-riding session Monday (May 6), the pop star wrote, “I honestly wish my life was as wild as it has been portrayed !!! Either way, some sh– actually has happened to my foot and I might have to get surgery … fingers crossed, hopefully not.”

The post comes a few days after Spears shared videos of her bruised, swollen foot on the platform shortly after hurting herself at the Los Angeles hotel. As she explained at the time, the “Toxic” singer had attempted a risky leap in the Marmont’s living room in the early morning of May 2, resulting in what she then believed was a twisted ankle.

Trending on Billboard

The incident was reported to the local fire department at around 12:42 that morning, and an ambulance was dispatched to the hotel. Photos from the scene captured the musician exiting the building barefoot alongside rumored boyfriend Paul Richard Soliz, after which the LAFD confirmed to Billboard that paramedics had departed around 1:17 a.m. without any indication of whether they ever encountered or treated Spears.

Touching on her appearance in the photos from the night, Spears wrote in her new post, “I was in my pajamas and yes, I had been crying because I hurt my foot !!! No breakdown !!!”

She added, “I’m a grown a– woman who is actually very naive in most situations !!!”

Based on Spears’ latest update, her foot injury is more serious than she first believed it to be. In an earlier post, she’d told followers, “Paramedics came to my door and, of course, caused this huge scene, which was so unnecessary, and all I needed was ice.”

“Psss this man is wonderful !!!” the Woman in Me author had added at the time, sharing a photo of her longtime lawyer Mathew Rosengart. “He’s like a father to me and he got me through last night !!! I adore you and admire you mister Mathew !!!”

To set things off, Mach tapped 03 Greedo for the hook and fellow Haitian KAYTRANADA for the production of the album’s title track and lead single. “RICHAXXHAITIAN” features Mach spitting in a rapid-fire flow and Greedo crooning like a West Coast Max B over a bouncy beat that interpolates Afrobeats legend Odion Iruoje’s “Ikebe.”

#RICHAXXHAITIAN will arrive May 17, just before Haitian Flag Day. The Haitian flag dates back to May 18, 1803, when it was created during the Haitian Revolution. The country gained its independence from the French a year later, making it the first free Black republic in the world, the first independent state in the Caribbean, and the second oldest independent nation in the Western Hemisphere after the United States.

Trending on Billboard

This new effort from Mach will examine “the country’s rich history as the world’s first free Black republic” and imagine “the nation’s possible future as an exemplar of Black cultural and economic excellence,” according to a press release. At the moment, Haiti is dealing with intense political strife as the country’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry recently resigned.

With this album, Mach wants to focus on Haiti’s greatness and fight the public’s negative connotation associated with his homeland. Not all of Mach-Hommy’s music is available for streaming, so it’s always a big deal when he drops something through official channels.

#RICHAXXHAITIAN will feature production from Conductor Williams, KAYTRANADA, Quelle Chris and Sadhu Gold, among others, and will feature Black Thought, Roc Marciano, 03 Greedo, HEPHZIBAH, Drea D’Nur, Your Old Droog, Tha God Fahim and Big Cheeko.

You can stream the new single here, and be on the lookout May 17 when the album drops.

The former Fifth Harmony member’s new project will be the follow-up to her April 2022 LP Familia, which reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200 upon its release. “Certain things in our human realm do make me feel like I’m in outer space, and the very rare few times where I’ve had incredible chemistry with someone is one of them,” she said in a statement about the track’s inspiration. “Part of that cocktail is also the emotional drama between you and that person, and the chaos and butterflies and nerves and passion. It’s unsustainable and not peaceful and exhausting, but also, I LUV IT.”
