Sabrina Carpenter Says She’s ‘So Not Chill’ About Making Her ‘Saturday Night Live’ Debut

Sabrina Carpenter is amped up after making her Saturday Night Live debut, and it’s not just because of all that “me espresso” she’s been drinking.

Following her first-ever performance on the show Saturday (May 18), the 25-year-old singer shared her excitement the next day on Instagram. “literally working late cuz I’m a singer,” she joked, captioning a clip of her performing her hit single “Espresso” on the SNL stage the night prior.

Carpenter added, “@nbcsnl thank you for having us I’m sooooo not chill about it and never will be.”

In addition to “Espresso” — which recently peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the rising pop star’s first-ever top 10 hit — Carpenter sang a medley of two of her Emails I Can’t Send standouts, “Feather” and “Nonsense.” For the latter, the Work It actress improvised one of her famous NSFW outros, singing, “He is 30 Rock-hard ’cause I said ‘hi’/ My sense of humor is but I am not dry/ SNL I just came for the first time.”

Trending on Billboard

She also appeared as Daphne alongside the night’s host, Jake Gyllenhaal, in a Scooby Doo-themed skit during the episode. In spite of what some fans predicted, the installment featured no allusions to the two stars’ mutual connection, Taylor Swift, who befriended Carpenter on the Latin America, Asia and Australian legs of her Eras Tour more than a decade after dating the Brokeback Mountain actor.

The May 18 show marked SNL‘s season 49 finale, meaning the series won’t resume until the fall. A week prior, Vampire Weekend performed on the Maya Rudolph-hosted episode, before which Dua Lipa did double duty as musical guest and host.

Saweetie Pays Homage to Grace Jones, ‘The Inspiration Behind the NANi Cover’

Saweetie saluted Grace Jones on the icon’s 76th birthday Sunday (May 19), and thanked her for inspiring the cover art of the rapper’s newest single “NANi.”

“Happy birthday to THE ICON, Grace Jones,” she wrote on X. “thank you for the massive print you’ve made in fashion, culture & cuntiness. The inspiration behind the NANi cover.”

The pose Saweetie is striking on the “NANi” single artwork is directly inspired by the artwork for Jones’ 1985 greatest hits album Island Life, which features the almost-nude singer stretching her right arm forward, with a microphone in hand, and stretching her left arm backward, touching her right foot that’s extended upward while her left leg stands strong. But the impossible arabesque pose, captured by Jean-Paul Goude, is actually a montage of images of Jones striking different poses that were cut and pasted together. It also made Billboard‘s 100 Best Album Covers of All Time list at No. 27 last year.

The “Icy Girl” MC recreated the image for her “NANi” cover, but instead of holding a mic, she’s holding a lime-green hair dryer that’s blowing her bubblegum pink locks away. “we gon’ fkkk up the Summer,” she wrote last week while officially announcing “NANi.”

Earlier this month at the 2024 Gold Gala — where Saweetie received the first-ever Billboard Gold Music Honor during the event dedicated to recognizing the 100 most impactful Asian Pacific changemakers in culture and society over the past year — she told Billboard on the red carpet, “‘NANi’ is that girl. ‘NANi’ is main character energy.”

Tetris Kelly:
Where will the new collab from Post Malone end up, while tracks like “Not Like Us” and “Million Dollar Baby” have a hold on the chart? This is the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 for the week dated May 25. Back in the top 10 is “Too Sweet,” Sabrina’s slips a spot to 9.

Taylor and Post are down to 8, while “Like That” is at 7, Teddy Swims climbs back up to 6, with “Beautiful Things” up to 5.

“A Bar Song” is at No. 4, “Million Dollar Baby” loses its No. 2 grip.

Last week’s No. 1 is at 2, debuting at No. 1 is “I Had Some Help” with Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen.

Post Malone & Morgan Wallen’s ‘I Had Some Help’ Soars In at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, launches at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. Post Malone achieves his sixth leader with the bitter breakup song and Wallen adds his second.

Notably, the track premieres with 76.4 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate, the top total for a song in a single week since YouTube song user-generated content was removed from chart calculations in 2020. It surpasses Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” – featuring Post Malone – which drew 76.2 million only three weeks earlier. Prior to the two songs, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” held the mark with 76.1 million in its first frame, as reflected on charts dated Jan. 23, 2021.

“I Had Some Help” arrives as the 1,172nd No. 1 in the Hot 100’s history, and the 80th to debut in the top spot. It concurrently blasts to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, where it’s established pop star Post Malone’s first leader and Wallen’s eighth.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated May 25, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, May 21. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Tyla Sizzles & Stops Traffic in Twerk-Filled ‘Jump’ Video Featuring Gunna & Skillibeng

“From Jozi to Ibiza,” it’s all eyes on Tyla. The South African singer returned on Monday (May 20) to drop off the steamy “Jump” video featuring appearances from Gunna and Skillibeng.

Nabil helms the colorful clip while Tyla invites the YSL rapper and Jamaican dancehall artist to Africa for the visual.

The Grammy-winning musician twerks from the balcony and even stops traffic with her breathtaking looks. “See me now, and that’s what they prefer/ I don’t touch no wheel ’cause I got a chauffeur/ First class how I get ’round the world,” she sings.

A fight briefly interrupts the action while Tyla undergoes several vibrant wardrobe changes before settling on a Rolling Stone lips logo tank to roll to the club with Gunna.

“A perfect picture like a Polaroid/ She a trophy, no award/ Baby sweet and tender like sirloin/ Told the chauffeur take you to a Chanel store/ Ever play with you, it be a world war,” Wunna raps.

The boastful “Jump” had a run on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, where it peaked at No. 11 in April. The Sammy Soso-produced track landed on Tyla’s self-titled debut album, which landed at No. 24 on the Billboard 200 in March following its release.

The 22-year-old graced the cover of Billboard in late March alongside her debut’s arrival, where she displayed the utmost confidence in herself and declared her run has only just begun when it comes to carving out her global legacy.

“I’m really confident in what I’ve created,” she said. “Now’s a time where I can showcase a performance style where I’m not really dancing as much. Maybe I strip back a little bit more and I’m just serving vocals. But there’s no way to stop me. I’m always going to find a way.”

R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: Lila Iké & H.E.R., Elijah Blake, Your Old Droog & More

With Kendrick Lamar‘s “Not Like Us” enjoying a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 debut — alongside an ever-extending stint at the top of the zeitgeist thanks to Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott — the Compton rapper’s musical scuffle with Drake continues to cast an unmistakable shadow over R&B/hip-hop and pop culture discourse.

Nonetheless, the past week has seen the industry collectively begin to pick its jaws up from the ground and return to regularly scheduled non-Kendrick/Drake-centric programming. Both Vince Staples and Lupe Fiasco announced new albums — Dark Times and Samurai, respectively — while Lil Wayne headlined Travis Kelce‘s Kelce Jam 2024, which also featured performances from 2 Chainz and Diplo. Of course, a harrowing 2016 surveillance video appearing to show Sean “Diddy” Combs assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a hotel surfaced via CNN, effectively corroborating Ventura’s account of the 2016 assault in her now-settled lawsuit against the Bad Boy mogul.

With Fresh PicksBillboard aims to highlight some of the best and most interesting new sounds across R&B and hip-hop — from Lila Iké & H.E.R.’s sultry “Boy Is Mine”-esque duet to Elijah Blake’s nostalgic reflection on two lovers who just can’t seem to make things work. Be sure to check out this week’s Fresh Picks in our Spotify playlist below.

Freshest Find: Lila Iké & H.E.R., “He Loves Us Both”

The legacy of Brandy & Monica‘s seminal “The Boy Is Mine” is well-documented, and this seductive new duet from reggae star Lila Iké and R&B dynamo H.E.R. showcases just how far that ’90s Grammy-winning tune has traveled. “I know you probably judgin’ what I did/ I know you probably hopin’ I forgive/ He don’t make it easy to walk away/ I know because he make me feel the same,” they croon back and forth, effortlessly emulating the tug-of-war that anchors Brandy & Monica’s original. Iké’s soulful, intentional phrasing plays well against H.E.R.’s riff-laden performance. Both of their voices wrap around the plaintive guitars and steady percussion, prioritizing selective restraint over bombastic belts which drives home the tension between the position of each vocalist. This is how crossover collaborations should sound.

2Rare feat. Skilla Baby & Rob49, “C4”

Nearly four decades later, Eazy-E’s classic single “Boyz N the Hood” is once again being revitalized in rap’s mainstream — but here, 2Rare flips the hardcore West Coast anthem into a raunchy club banger, with help from Skilla Baby and Rob49 looking to heat up just in time for the summer. Instead of Eazy’s ‘64 Impala, Rare plays off of the explosive C4: “She the type to blow just like C4/ Fiending for the D like I was giving her dope,” he raps on the chorus while mimicking Eazy-E’s flow. This year is slated to be another busy campaign for the Warner Records signee, and the Philly native has plenty of more energetic tunes on the way with a project also on the horizon.

Elijah Blake, “Sugarwater & Lime”

Elijah Blake has spent the better part of the last decade writing on hits for R&B heavyweights — including Usher (“Climax”) and Rihanna (“No Love Allowed”) — but, recently, he’s shifted his focus to his own output. With “Sugarwater & Lime,” the latest single from his forthcoming eponymous LP, Blake explores the frustration of trying to make something work without having all of the right ingredients. “Baby, we can’t make lemonade/ From sugarwater and lime/ But we tried/ We couldn’t make lemonade/ But maybe we can heal from heartbreak/ In due time,” he sings over a brassy arrangement accented by warbling bass, symphonic strings and ’70s-esque drum licks. Blake’s voice ranges from tender falsetto to nimble rap-sung cadences and dizzying riffs, tracing the inevitably convoluted route of an almost-there love.

Your Old Droog, “Mercury Thermometers”

Classic boom-bap rap might have taken a backseat compared to the force it was decades ago in the culture, but Your Old Droog is still doing the sub-genre justice. The New York rapper connected with Conductor Williams for “Mercury Thermometers” and Droog’s shrewd wordplay over the dusty production and cymbal drums doesn’t disappoint. “This is Bob Dylan without the harmonica/ This some iconic bars and a hard moniker,” he raps. Y.O.D. boasts about taking the hard route to fame with no handouts or stimulus packages, but still being able to persevere. Look for Droog to work with plenty of acclaimed hip-hop producers on his upcoming album, Movie, which arrives on June 21.

Deb Fan, “Lady”

With “Lady,” the first single from R&B artist-producer Deb Fan’s forthcoming sophomore EP, the Hong Kong-raised, L.A.-based singer challenges restrictive stereotypes and outdated portrayals of womanhood in Asian culture. “There’s some beauty in made-up rules/ King of my world with none to lose,” she coos in an ethereal tone over sparse, atmospheric production reminiscent of contemporary R&B stars like Kali Uchis, while still finding room for the slinky bass of ’90s R&B. With a vocal performance that simultaneously mourns the constricting nature of expectations placed on women and rings with the hope of a concerted rebirth, Deb Fan makes some real magic on “Lady.”

BIG30, “Come Save Me”

BIG30 paints his hood love story with the first verse of “Come Save Me.” This isn’t exactly Romeo and Juliet, but the Memphis native admits he’s been “looking for love in all the wrong places” recently. He realizes how toxic this love is, but he’s not trying to hide it anymore and even wants her to have his baby. “Ain’t talkin’ ’bout with no picture, baby, pop out with my child,” he raps. Adding another layer to the chaos, the wind instrument loop hilariously sounds like it recalls the Austin Powers theme song. Learn more about BIG30 as his Still King album is filled with gripping street tales from the NLess rapper.

The team at Anti Social Camp hope to offer a more inclusive approach to the concept of a writing camp, which are typically private affairs tailored to the needs of one artist or project. Anti Social, by contrast, is a front-facing event that celebrates New York’s music scene.

In recent years, many of New York’s top talents have dispersed to other creative hubs, like Los Angeles, Nashville, and Austin, and to help grow local opportunities, Anti Social Camp is part of a larger effort each June to celebrate New York Music Month.

“We want to put a spotlight on New York as a music capital of the world,” says Anti Social Camp Founder Danny Ross. “Artists are going to walk away with new hit records, access to key industry players, and new collaborators who will be influential in their careers far past the six days of Anti Social Camp. We’re making a real impact on creators and the New York music scene. What else can we ask for?”

That same month, the Big Apple will play host to a bevy of music industry events, including the Songwriters Hall of Fame, American Association of Independent Music (A2IM)’s Indie week conference, the Libera Awards, Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) Annual Meeting, the National Music Publishing Association (NMPA) annual meeting, and more.

The music sector has an outsized economic output of over $20 billion and contributes to the vibrancy that makes our city one of a kind.”

The camp is continuing last year’s traditions and adding in new ones. This year, the camp will once again put together a compilation album of music created at the event, released with the help of Amuse. LeBron James Allegedly Won’t Ditch The Los Angeles Lakers To Play With Bronny

Bronny James’ name has yet to be called during the 2024 NBA Draft, but the chatter around LeBron James’ son, where he will land, and if the Lakers superstar will join the team that takes a chance on his seed is deafening.

Word around the NBA streets was that LeBron James was very gung-ho about playing alongside his son in the league, giving many teams the impression that if they draft Bronny, they could land LBJ in free agency.

According to reports, teams shouldn’t bet on that because Bron Bron has no desire to ditch the Los Angeles Lakers to hoop with his son.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that James is telling teams not named the Lakers who believe their chances to sign him in free agency will increase if they draft Bronny “No, as of right now,” regarding leaving Los Angeles.

Yahoo! Sports reports the “as of right now” in his statement leaves enough wiggle room for teams to continue to continue working on a situation that would pique his interest.

Interest in Bronny James increased following his strong showing at the NBA Draft, and some people believe he could be drafted in the second round.

LeBron James Did Express In The Past He Wanted To Play With Bronny In His Final Season

Regardless of the chatter around Bronny James, the Los Angeles Lakers are still the front runners to resign James, who has a $51.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season, if they land a head coach LeBron James approves of and a third piece to compliment him and Anthony Davis.

LBJ’s new alleged stance on playing alongside his son starkly differs from his past comments.

He made his desire to play his final season as a teammate with Bronny, even saying he would sign with the team that drafts his son.

That changed after the Lakers were bounced out of the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets, with James telling people hooping with Bronny was no longer a priority for him.

As for Bronny James, a conversation is happening now that he doesn’t deserve the attention he is receiving. Some people believe the spotlight is on him because he is the son of arguably the greatest professional hooper not named Michael Jordan.

ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins has been very loud on the matter.

Now, Bronny knows that carrying the James torch is the main topic of discussion, but the young hooper has made it clear he doesn’t want anything handed to him because he is the son of LeBron James and wants people to judge him on his skills and what he does on the court.

“Everything that follows my dad, people just try to link me with that and all the greatness he’s achieved and I haven’t done anything yet,” Bronny told reporters. “So there needs to be that divide between Bronny and LeBron. I just want to let people know that my name is Bronny James and not being identified as LeBron James’ son.”

We hear you Bronny.

Could Jennifer Lopez be on her way to a fourth divorce in her illustrious love life? We don’t know but it seems like her marriage to Ben Affleck might be on the rocks if recent reports that the two superstars are living separate lives are to be believed.

According to People, J. Lo and Benny boy have been having marital problems for quite some time and the most recent example of the two not getting along came on Mother’s Day when apparently Jenny from the block spent the holiday away from her Oscar winning hubby. Though it seemed like the two were meant to be together when they rekindled their love a few years ago and tied the knot in 2022, it seems like it’s once again falling apart like it’s 2004.

People reports:

Lopez, 54, and Affleck, 51, have been residing apart from each other since Lopez returned to Los Angeles from New York City. She had been busy in New York City filming her movie Kiss of the Spider Woman, promoting her next movie Atlas, and co-chairing the 2024 Met Gala, which Affleck went absent from.

Affleck, meanwhile, has been filming a sequel to his 2016 movie The Accountant in Los Angeles in recent weeks and was most recently seen solo at Netflix’s May 5 live Roast of Tom Brady.

Lopez, who shares her 16-year-old twins Max and Emme with ex-husband Marc Anthony, shared two Instagram posts on Mother’s Day noting her relationship with her kids and her own mom Guadalupe “Lupe” Rodríguez.

After the two collaborated on that hilarious Dunkin Donuts commercial we really thought they were in a good place in their marriage. We guess not.

Though the two haven’t been spending much quality time together, the “D” word (Divorce) has yet to be muttered but the way things are looking, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before Jennifer Lopez is back on the market and has a gang of men sliding in her DM’s. Yes, she’s 54-years-old but still looks amazing, so y’all already know her DM’s are going to get flooded.
