Metro Boomin Teases More New Music With The Weeknd on the Way: ‘We Cooking Up’

Metro Boomin has already unleashed two albums with Future and teased a third unknown project, but the grind doesn’t stop there for the St. Louis native.

While in Egypt for a concert at the Great Pyramids of Giza in April, Spotify caught up with Young Metro where he divulged his plans for the year, which include more collaborations with The Weeknd, who’s working on his Dawn FM follow up.

“The songs we did with The Weeknd, frequent collaborator of mine, ‘Low Life’ I feel like that was the beginning of our journey to now,” he said while thinking back to their first collab alongside Future that appeared on Pluto’s 2106 EVOL album (“Low Life” reached No. 16 on the Hot 100). “Which was with Future so I feel like it was just a full-circle moment.”

Trending on Billboard

He continued: “For him to appear between the two albums like four times. That’s big. You know, that’s family. Me and him working on a lot of stuff. You know, we cooking up for his new album. I know a lot of people are gonna be real pleased and even more happy.”

The Weeknd’s signature falsetto was sprinkled throughout Metro and Future’s We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You albums, both of which topped the Billboard 200.

“I really took it personally, in the past couple years, seeing different outlets and people sh—ing on hip-hop, saying ‘hip-hop is dying, hip-hop is this, it’s been this long since there was a hip-hop No. 1,’” Metro told Billboard Arabia earlier in May. “Just trying to spin that whole hip-hop is dying narrative, at the same time trying to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop. I felt they were trying to wash our genre and culture away. I’m still in the game and I take it personal. Those kind of things disturbed me, at the same time, it was the kind of fuel I needed.”

Metro Boomin headed to the Middle East to rock the Kundalini Grand Pyramids with a two-hour set for quite possibly the most unique concert he’s ever put on and it all went down in Egypt on April 30.

“I’ve always wanted to see this [the pyramids] with my own eyes, but I could never even fathom doing a show and performing in front of something as crazy and legendary and history as this,” Metro said. “I’m grateful for everyone, for the whole country.”

It’s been over two years since The Weeknd’s Dawn FM album — which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 — and it sounds like he’s back in album mode, and there could be more heat in the stash from Abel and Metro.

Kelly Rowland Speaks Out After Scuffle With Cannes Red Carpet Security Goes Viral: ‘I Stood My Ground’

Kelly Rowland is speaking out.

Two days after appearing to get into a heated argument with a female security guard on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, the Destiny’s Child alum opened up to the Associated Press on Thursday (May 23) about the viral video.

“The woman knows what happened. I know what happened,” Rowland told the outlet at the amfAR Cannes Gala. “I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries, and that is it.

“There were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me, and they didn’t get scolded or pushed off or told to get off,” she added pointedly. “I stood my ground, and she felt like she had to stand hers.”

In the video in question, Rowland — who was in attendance at Cannes for the premiere of Marcello Mio — poses for photographers before a group of ushers leads her off the carpet. When one of them seemingly tries to rush her along by holding an arm behind the “Motivation” singer’s back, she turns around and appears to scold the guard, holding up a finger to accent her point.

Trending on Billboard

As Rowland starts to walk away, the guard talks with a pair of nearby workers, which prompts the Mea Culpa star to turn around and add another remark.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the red carpet security at Cannes is famously strict in order to prevent delays in the festival’s schedule. The annual event reportedly prohibited selfies on the red carpet in 2018 for similar reasons, and the publication adds that guests who break the rules are “often met with their phones being grabbed or security covering the camera lens.”

Tucker Wetmore Talks His Double Shot of Hits & Stadium-Sized Dreams: ‘I Want to Use the Momentum to Build Something Great’

Tucker Wetmore has earned massive breakthrough success over the past few months with a pair of hits — “Wine Into Whiskey” and “Wind Up Missin’ You”— that have accelerated the 24-year-old’s status at the forefront of country music’s crop of newcomers.

In December, Wetmore teased the moody heartbreaker “Wine Into Whiskey” on TikTok and the video snippet surged, earning over 6.5 million views to date. He officially released the song in February, and by early March, the song had made its debut on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 — later reaching a peak of No. 16 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in April, and earning 63.4 million total official on-demand U.S. streams to date, according to Luminate. In late March, he followed that breakout hit with the romantic “Wind Up Missin’ You” — which eclipsed its predecessor on the Hot Country Songs chart, reaching No. 11, and has earned 47.9 million official on-demand U.S. streams to date.

“Wine Into Whiskey” had a darker feel, a more sad-ish vibe. I wanted to follow that with something that showed the other side of me,” Wetmore tells Billboard. “I go straight out of the gate with two different sides of the spectrum. From there, I’m not really in a box from here on out. It was a good roadmap.”

Trending on Billboard

Seated in an office at artist development/publishing company Back Blocks Music, Wetmore is excited about another newly achieved target — his new GMC Denali truck. “That’s been a goal of mine for years now — I wanted to treat myself to getting a truck,” he says.

That vision-setting has aided Wetmore in reaching career milestones at warp speed. He recently signed with WME for booking and has attained his enviable run of success as an independent artist — though he’s fast closing in on a label deal, which he hopes to announce in the coming weeks. In the process, he’s charging through the tally of goals he set for himself just a few years ago.

“I gave myself three years to get a publishing deal; I knocked that out in one year,” Wetmore recounts. “I gave myself five years to get a record deal. I gave myself four years to get on my first tour and knocked that out in three. I was just very goal-oriented.”

Growing up in Kalama, Washington, Wetmore says music has been a constant in his life (he began playing piano at 11 and took up guitar soon after). However, through college, he devoted himself to a variety of sports — including football, track, pole vaulting and basketball. During his senior year in high school, he earned four state championships, in football, pole vaulting, Mens 4×1 and men’s track team. He went on to play football at Montana Technological University, where he majored in business and information technology.

When a sports injury sidelined him, he shifted his laser focus to music. He moved to Nashville in the fall of 2020, as the world was still deep in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. He released cover songs on TikTok, but it was one of his original songs, “I Think It’s You,” which prompted Back Blocks founder Rakiyah Marshall to reach out.

“I only had like seven original songs by that point, and she DM’d me and asked to set up a meeting,” he recalls. “In that first meeting, she was like, ‘What are your goals?’ I said, ‘I want to sell out stadiums and I don’t want to be put in a box.’ I’m too ADHD to be like, ‘This is one sound for one person.’”

With the success of “Wine Into Whiskey” and “Wind Up Missin’ You,” he’s already taking his first steps toward both goals. Wetmore has opened shows for Kameron Marlowe’s The Strangers Tour, and will open shows for Chris Young and Jason Aldean this summer, before joining Luke Bryan’s Farm Tour later this year. Between shows, he’s writing songs and working on his debut album, which is expected later this year — while his new single, the 808s-driven “What Would You Do?,” comes out May 24.

Billboard’s Country Rookie of the Month for May, Wetmore spoke with us about songwriting, the influence of Jerry Lee Lewis, and why he’s not afraid to share his music in a raw state on social media.

You wrote “Wine into Whiskey” and “Wind Up Missin’ You” in the same week, but “Wine” became your first breakout song. What is the story behind writing “Wine into Whiskey”?

It was the day after my birthday, and I was hanging out with [‘Wine into Whiskey co-writer] Jacob Hackworth that weekend. We showed up at a writing session with [songwriter] Justin Ebach that day and were tossing ideas around, but nothing stuck. Then, Justin pipes up and says, ‘Sorry guys, I’m hungover right now.’ Me and Jacob started laughing and were like, ‘Oh, thank God, because we are, too. We do not feel good at all.’

Then a few minutes later, Ebach told us about the idea of ‘Wine into Whiskey.’ We loved it, and it just kind of poured out onto the paper. There was something special in the room that day, for sure.

You’re not shy about sharing bits of songs in their unfinished state on social media. Why has that been important to you?

It’s an art. You can show polished-off versions of everything all day long, but then people don’t connect as well because they think everything you do is perfect. Not everything we do is perfect. We have steps and we have processes for everything. Showing them the first stages is important. The vocals on the master of “Wine into Whiskey” are the day-of writing vocals. When we wrote it, I was like, “Hey, there’s magic in it. It’s special.”

I do get some comments — like, on “Wine into Whiskey,” we originally had some snaps on it. Some people liked it, but it sounded tacky to me. If someone likes that version, they can go listen to it.

Your family is musical — what are some of your memories of growing up around music?

I come from a Samoan family on my dad’s side, and they’re all very musical. If you’ve ever hung out with a bunch of Samoans, it’s lots of love and everyone singing. My grandpa was a pastor — and growing up around church, if one person starts singing ‘Amazing Grace’ in the kitchen, the next thing you know, you’ve got a 12-voice choir harmonizing. My love for music just stemmed from watching my family.

When did you discover your own musical inclinations?

My mom tells me stories all the time that she remembers me being three or four years old and harmonizing to 3 Doors Down songs with my uncle. When I took up piano, I played by ear. I would watch YouTube videos and learn Elton John and Billy Joel — or even classical, like Beethoven.

Then I found Jerry Lee Lewis. I fell in love with his boogie-woogie type of bluesy piano playing. I remember going to the music teacher in high school and showing him a video of a guy playing a Jerry Lee Lewis song. He taught me a C-blues scale. I took that and ran with it and just learned a lot by listening.

You have been out on the road opening shows for Kameron Marlowe’s Strangers Tour. What has having his support meant to you?

Kameron is one of the best people I’ve ever met my life, hands down. He’s such a solid dude, and I couldn’t think of a better intro tour than Kameron Marlowe. Back when I was learning cover songs, I learned Kameron’s “Giving You Up.” He truly believed in me before any of this — we had teased ‘Wine Into Whiskey’ when I got the call from his team asking me to come out on the road with them. Rakiyah was like, “Well, we can’t tour without any music.” So we were like, “Let’s go!”

What are your must haves on tour?

Jack Daniel’s. We take a shot of Jack before every show. We do a prayer, then we do the shot and talk about what our goals for the show are — what do we want to be better tonight than last night?

What is a song you’ve been listening to a lot lately?

“Easy on the Eyes” by Texas Hill.

Who would you love to collaborate with?

It depends on the song, truly. I think collaborating with Alan Jackson, one of my favorites, would be super cool.

What is your “Desert Island” album?

Exodus by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

How would you describe your upcoming album?

I’ve been working on songs for three or four years. The project is going to be all over the place when it comes to ideas—some cool country-type stuff, some that are more of an 808s-type of vibe. And there’s one song I’m definitely playing a little piano on, too. “Wine Into Whiskey” did what it did, and it was really cool, but I don’t want it to just be a moment; I want to use the momentum to build something great.

Brandy Is Cinderella Again in New ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’ Trailer: Watch

That’s Queen Cinderella to you.

In a new trailer for the upcoming Descendants: The Rise of Red, Brandy reprises her role as the iconic Disney princess, who now rules as a monarch nearly 30 years after the vocalist first starred in the role. But this time, her kingdom is in trouble.

That’s why it’s up to Cinderella and Prince — sorry, King — Charming’s daughter Chloe, played by Malia Baker, to save them. In the clip posted Thursday (May 23), Rita Ora’s Queen of Hearts — to the disappointment of her daughter Red, played by Kylie Cantrall — takes the royal couple prisoner while staging a coup on their kingdom.

“I will never kneel to a tyrant,” Brandy, dressed in her signature powder blue, boldly tells the Alice in Wonderland villain before reassuring her daughter. “It’s going to be OK.”

Once Cinderella is ushered away, Chloe and Red realize that they must team up to save her and undo the Queen of Hearts’ damage. How? By time traveling, of course. The frenemies go to the past with the power of a magical pocketwatch and meet the younger versions of their moms in an attempt to correct their missteps before they even happen.

Trending on Billboard

The musical film is set to arrive on Disney+ July 12, about 27 years after the “Boy Is Mine” singer first starred alongside Whitney Houston in the 1997 TV movie Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Brandy’s involvement in the new project was first announced in November 2022, followed by a teaser video last year.

Posting the trailer on Instagram on Thursday, the R&B powerhouse wrote, “A new adventure awaits!”

Another Jan. 6 Support Flag Found Flying At Justice Alito Vacation Home

A second home belonging to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was found flying a flag supporting the January 6th rioters.

According to reports, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was flying another flag that was carried by rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, at a vacation home that he owned in New Jersey. The flag, captured in photographs, was an “Appeal To Heaven” flag which is also known as the Pine Tree flag. It was on view as late as last year, when the Supreme Court weighed a decision on when to prosecute January 6 rioters, according to neighbors in the area on Long Beach Island where the home is located.

The “Appeal To Heaven” flag, which was first flown in the Revolutionary War by the forces of General George Washington, shows a green pine tree on a white background with the phrase “An Appeal To Heaven” inspired by British philosopher John Locke’s “right to revolution” – which encourages violence as a means – doctrine on it. It had fallen out of usage for many years until the last decade when it had become a symbol primarily for “a theological vision of what the United States should be and how it should be governed,” according to Institute of Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies scholar Matthew Taylor. The flag has recently been seen in the office of House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson and has been promoted by Dutch Sheets, a man who was prominent in helping to further former President Donald Trump’s false claims of the 2020 presidential election being stolen.

The news comes days after Alito’s denial that he was responsible for flying the U.S. flag in reverse at his home in Virginia after the January 6 insurrection, which was reported by the New York Times. The conservative Supreme Court Justice has been under fire for leaking the decision that would overturn Roe V. Wade, as well as selling Bud Light stock as the company dealt with right-wing backlash over working with a trans influencer. There have been calls from Democrats in Congress for Alito to be censured for his actions, and for him to recuse himself from any January 6-related cases including the question of immunity for Donald Trump concerning his involvement in the events of January 6.

Former Nike Diversity Manager Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison For Theft

A former diversity manager for both Facebook and Nike just learned that crime doesn’t pay and that freedom is indeed priceless. Barbara Furlow-Smiles was just sentenced to five years in prison for robbing both companies of millions of dollars.

According to CNBC, Furlow-Smiles pleaded guilty to wire fraud back in December of 2023 after being accused of stealing $4.9 million from Facebook by using fake invoices, fraudulent vendors and even cash kickbacks while working for the company. Interestingly enough she continued to partake in such practices when she got herself a new gig over at Nike as their DEI but only made off with a little more than $100,000. Chicken feed when compared to the millions she syphoned off of Facebook but still a lot of money.

Prosecutors in the case asked the judge to sentence her to 6 and a half years as she used the money to fund a pretty lavish lifestyle in California, Georgia and Oregon, but “luckily” for Smiles, the judge overseeing the case decided to cut the sentence down to five years for her transgressions and ordered her to repay Facebook $4.8 million and Nike $121,000.

CNBC reports:

Prosecutors in their sentencing memo said that in addition to the money Furlow-Smiles stole from the company, Meta lost more than $4.5 million “in addition to other expenses, such as attorney’s fees, which were incurred as a result of Meta having to uncover and investigate her fraud scheme.”

“As Meta notes, ‘the harm from [Furlow-Smiles’] criminal conduct cannot be measured purely in financial terms,‘” prosecutors recounted in their memo. “Her ‘crimes also resulted in anguish amongst those employees that worked closely with her.’”

Nike told prosecutors that she was “entrusted as a leader for [the] company, that she would embody the value of ‘Doing the Right Thing’ which is one of NIKE’s key maxims,” the prosecutor said in their memo. “As Nike explains, ‘[t]o say that Ms. Furlow-Smiles violated our trust would be an understatement. The fraud committed by Ms. Furlow-Smiles violated the trust of and devastated the employees who managed and worked with her.’ ”

We’re just surprised that she continued her scheme at Nike after getting fired from Facebook. Did they not call her past employers for references or anything?

What do y’all think of this multi-million dollar scheme? Let us know in the comments section below.

Safaree Reminisces About Doing the Robot in Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ Video

What if we told you one of the greatest clips on the Internet involved Safaree doing the robot? We’ll get to that in a few, but first lets talk about what Safaree recently posted on X. Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend and former collaborator took to the social network and questioned what he was doing in Nicki’s “Super Bass” video.

“Yo wat the hell was I doing in that super bass video,” he wrote. “yo I am really a crazy a&& ni%%%a I don’t give a sh*% bout nothing.”

He’s referring, of course, to the dance he randomly did at the end of the video for Nicki’s hit single. Safaree makes his legendary cameo in the Sanaa Hamri-directed clip around the three-minute mark. He appears on a platform next to his former girlfriend and starts poppin’ and lockin’ like a madman as they both glow in the dark.

Trending on Billboard

And as long as we’re in the spirit of looking back, let’s take a detour down memory lane and go back to 2010. That was when Safaree broke out the robot during a live performance on the Late Show with David Letterman alongside Nicki and will.i.am.

You’ll see him in the back standing still as a statue waiting for the right moment to slide across that stage and show them who is who and what is what. Around the two-and-a-half minute mark, Safaree brings the robot to life and pulls up just in time for Nicki’s verse. This is truly an incredible piece of content and reminds us that the 2010s were simpler times.

Thankfully, one X user did the hard work and made a clip of his cameo for everyone to enjoy whenever they see fit.

Safaree is underrated when it comes to his imprint on the Internet. He has blessed us with some great stuff over the years. Who else remembers the classic clip of him sporting Gatorade gear from head-to-toe?

And here’s another clip of him doing the robot. This time someone has to turn him on.

And then there was the time he showed Nicki some new dance moves he thought about on a plane.

Safaree Samuels content is the gift that keeps on giving.

The 15 Most Scathing Hip-Hop Diss Songs of All Time

Rappers have been going too far for a long time.

What’s beef? Ask 10 rap fans and you’ll get 10 different answers. The Drake vs Kendrick Lamar beef that resulted in a weeks-long battle that saw the two rap superstars trading barbs over seven(!) tracks excavated a bunch of conversations about how rap battles should be conducted, what’s fair, and how far is too far.

The last question seemed to dominate the discussion after Drake released the song and video for “Family Matters” and Kendrick immediately followed up with “meet the grahams.” Both songs saw the rappers working to pick apart their opponent by excoriating their interior lives. Drake claimed that Kendrick’s business partner fathered one of his kids and that he physically abuses his fiancé, while Kendrick claimed that Drake is a drug addict who employs pedophiles and has another child that he has not publicly acknowleged.

It all felt like too much for the public. Many wondered if the two had gone too far. And many acted as if Kendrick and Drake were the first rappers to send scalding hot disses at their opponents. Well, we’re here to tell you that they were not the first. Rappers have been “going too far” since the ’80s — the only difference is back then the songs didn’t go No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 like Kendrick’s “Not Like Us.”

To prove our point, we found a bunch of songs that were just as disrespectful and disparaging as anything Drake and Kendrick dropped this year. Below you’ll find the 15 songs we believe to be the most scathing rap diss tracks of all time.
