Kelly Rowland Talks Scolding An Usher On Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet

HipHopWired Featured Video

Cannes Film Festival 2024 Red Carpet

Kelly Rowland was the subject of Internet chatter after she was observed getting into it with an usher at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The singer and actress has since made a public statement after the incident, stating that she was standing her ground.

The image of Kelly Rowland pointing and having what appeared to be a loud discussion with the Cannes Film Festival usher went viral this week and even sparked some meme fodder. It wasn’t understood at the time what happened but Rowland, speaking with the Associated Press, explained her side of events and even alleged that women [i.e. not Black] who didn’t look like her were not treated the same.

“The woman knows what happened. I know what happened. I have a boundary and I stand by those boundaries and that is it,” Kelly Rowland said to the AP at the Cannes Film Festival. “And there were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me and they didn’t get scolded or pushed off or told to get off. I stood my ground and she felt like she had to stand hers. But I stood my ground.”

From what was seen on video footage, Rowland was instructed twice by an usher to vacate the red carpet section at the Palais des Festivals and motioned her to take the stairs into the theater. Then a group of ushers swarmed her and essentially guided her to the stairs. At that moment, Rowland gave one of the ushers a piece of her mind.

Rowland observed a difference in treatment but stopped short of calling it race-related but the suggestion rings clear in her statment.

It took a while, but Atari finally came out on top in its competition with longtime rival Intellivision.

For those who are only familiar with Sega and Nintendo, or Xbox and PlayStation going at each other, there were two video game companies vying to be in people’s homes, Atari and Intellivision.

Atari and Intellivision launched dueling consoles, the Atari 2600, and Intellivision.

Intellivision was developed by Mattel Electronics and introduced to the world in 1979. Its console sold about 5 million units by 1990.

Thursday, May 23, one of the most storied rivalries in the video game industry ended when Atari announced it had acquired Intellivision.

Atari announced that it would acquire its longtime rival and the 200 games in its library.

Atari wrote in a press release, “Atari will seek to expand digital and physical distribution of legacy Intellivision games, potentially create new games, and explore brand and licensing opportunities.”

The Intellivision Amico Is Not Part of The Acquisition

The Verge reports that the acquisition does not include the Intellivision Amico, the new console Intellivision announced in 2020 that it was working on and that led by infamous “liar” and legendary video game composer Tommy Tallarico.

The website notes that Intellivision will rebrand itself and grant licensing rights to the new company, allowing Intellivision games to be on the console.

“We look forward to our expanded collaboration and the prospect of bringing a broad array of new titles to the Amico family gaming platform,” Intellivision CEO Phil Adam said in the press release.

Atari now specializes in retrogaming, launching mini retro versions of its classic consoles and releasing its classic games on modern consoles. It also owns Digital Eclipse, a studio that specializes in retro gaming.

We are curious to see the fruits of this acquisition.

Travis Kelce Calls Harrison Butker a ‘Great Person’ Following Controversial Commencement Speech

Travis Kelce has finally weighed in on Harrison Butker’s controversial Benedictine College commencement speech, during which the Kansas City Chiefs kicker quoted a Taylor Swift song while condemning President Joe Biden, abortion, birth control, LGBTQ Pride, the “cultural emasculation of men” and more.

On the Friday (May 24) episode of his and brother Jason Kelce’s podcast New Heights, the tight end noted that while he disagrees with “a majority” of the beliefs Butker shared during the Catholic school’s graduation ceremony, he thinks his teammate is “a great person.”

“I’ve known him for seven-plus years,” Travis said. “I cherish him as a teammate. I think [Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes] said it best, where he is every bit of a great person and great teammate. He’s treated friends and family that I’ve introduced to him with nothing but respect and kindness, and that’s how he treats everyone.”

Trending on Billboard

As mentioned by Travis, the episode comes shortly after Mahomes defended Butker during a press conference at the Chiefs’ recent training complex in Kansas City. The quarterback told reporters that while he doesn’t share his teammate’s beliefs, he thinks Butker is “trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction.”

On Friday, Travis gave a similar sentiment. “When it comes down to his views and what he said … those are his,” the Ohio native said on the podcast as Jason nodded in agreement. “I can’t say I agree with the majority of it, or just about any of it outside of him loving his family and his kids. I don’t think I should judge him by his views, especially his religious views, of how to go about life. That’s just not who I am.”

During his speech on May 11, Butker also promoted antisemitic misinformation about a congressional bill as well as discouraged the female graduates in attendance from focusing on careers outside of homemaking after earning their degrees. “I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” he said at the time. “I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”

Later on, Butker quoted Swift’s Midnights single “Bejeweled” while admonishing church leaders who gain too much satisfaction “from the adulation they receive from their parishioners” and “become overly familiar.”

“This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time,” he said with a smile. “Because as my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘Familiarity breeds contempt.’”

In the weeks since Butker’s speech went viral, several stars — including Flavor Flav, Maren Morris and Eddie Vedder — have publicly denounced the kicker. On New Heights, Jason revealed that his wife, former field hockey player Kylie Kelce, was “a little bit frustrated” with his comments.

Travis, on the other hand, did not share how Swift reacted to Butker’s address — however, one could argue that the 14-time Grammy winner’s history of identifying as a feminist and advocating for LGBTQ rights speaks for itself.

Watch Travis open up about Butker’s commencement speech on New Heights below.

Mick Jagger Jokes About Stormy Daniels, Celebrates His Own ‘F–king Sandwich’ at Rolling Stones’ New Jersey Concert

When The Rolling Stones launched their latest album, Hackney Diamonds, at the intimate Manhattan rock club Racket NYC last October, it was a celebrity-studded affair (boasting a surprise Lady Gaga duet) at a venue that caps at 650 people. Thursday night (May 23) at New Jersey’s gargantuan MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., the Stones brought their Hackney Diamonds Tour to the tri-state area and performed at a stadium that seats more than 80,000. And while the star-to-civilian ratio was understandably lower than that album launch party seven months earlier, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood seemed looser, happier and more at ease performing a two-hour set for tens of thousands than a seven-song underplay for the lucky and the elite.

Jagger was at his hip-swiveling, finger flailing finest as he gave “Shattered” its tour debut, ripped through new tunes like “Angry” and wailed on the harp for “Miss You”; Richards, as usual, found his guitar groove and fixated on it, occasionally cracking a smile or sharing a laugh with his bandmates; and Wood, still the new guy after 48 years, seemed a bit awestruck as he sized up the sea of people dancing (with varying degrees of versatility) and singing along.

Trending on Billboard

While introducing the band, Jagger cheekily hailed Wood as the “Botticelli of the Bronx, the Monet of Manhattan, the Basquiat of Brooklyn” – none of which really apply to a guitarist born in Middlesex, England, but Wood did demonstrate his artistic flair during a fervent solo spotlight on “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” (a song title that probably held a deeper resonance for those tucked away in the nosebleeds).

Before trotting out the fan-voted song in the setlist, “Wild Horses,” Jagger made a point of telling the crowd, “There’s a much bigger vote happening in November.” Later on in the night, he couldn’t resist a jibe at the expense of a former president. “I was a bit worried about the weather – I thought we were going to get a bit of a Stormy Daniels,” he said slyly, referring to the adult star involved in the criminal hush money trial against Trump.

Also on the menu for stage banter: The Tick Tock Diner in Clifton, N.J. Back in 2019, Jagger was on the very same stage for the band’s No Filter Tour and shouted out the aforementioned diner, telling the crowd he snagged a “Taylor ham with disco fries – and sloppy joe to go” at the regional hot spot. On Thursday night, we got the follow-up. “Last time [we played here] I mentioned I went to this diner called the Tick Tock Diner. So on the way to the show, I stopped in there, and I found out they got a new sandwich — and it’s called the Mick Jagger. I’ve never had a f–king sandwich named after me before, so I’m very, very proud. And me and Keith and Ronnie are going to eat it after the show.”

The Glimmer Twins are still shining at 80, but who knows if and when England’s longest running hitmakers will return on a tour of this magnitude. At the very least, their Hackney Diamonds Tour (and the Tick Tock Diner) is giving fans something savory and satiating to celebrate the living legends.

Sean Kingston & His Mom Arrested On Fraud Charges

It seems like Sean Kingston has once again found himself in trouble with the law and for someone who isn’t a gangsta rapper or even an R&B thug, it’s pretty remarkable that the Jamaican singer has seen central bookings more times than your favorite hardcore artist.

According to the Huffpost, the “Beautiful Girls” singer was arrested in California this past Thursday (May 23) on fraud charges after a SWAT team raided his Florida home and made off with a van filled with all kinds of items. To make matters even worse, Kingston’s 61-year-old mother, Janice Turner who actually did a prison bid for bank fraud after pleading guilty to stealing over $160,000 back in 2006.

How she may have been involved in this latest scheme is anyone’s guess, but their attorney, Robert Rosenblatt is confident the two will be exonerated once all the facts come to light saying “We look forward to addressing these in court and are confident of a successful resolution for Shawn and his mother.”

Still, it seems like Sean may have once again skipped out on another bill and is now paying the price for his transgression.

The Huffpost reports:

An attorney who witnessed his mother’s arrest said the detentions are partly related to a lawsuit he filed against Kingston in February accusing him of defrauding a Florida company that installed in his home a 232-inch (5.8 meter) television — or approximately 17 feet by 9.5 feet (5 meters by 3 meters).

“It is amazing what you can get away with if you are a celebrity,” attorney Dennis Card told The Associated Press. “He creates this larger than life, ‘I am rich’ persona. His mother is a necessary component in this. He presents himself as a family-oriented guy, ‘I’m taking care of my mom,’ but she knows full well what is going on.”

In the lawsuit, Ver Ver Entertainment says Kingston contacted the company in September about purchasing the television, sold under the brand name Colossal TV, and having it installed. The system costs $150,000.

In November, Kingston paid the company $30,000 and the TV was installed, the lawsuit says. No commercials or further payments were ever made despite numerous promises, it contends.

Man, just get yourself a big screen TV at BJ’s or Costco for under $1,000 and live your life as a free man. SMH.

Kingston has commented. “People love negative energy! I am good and so is my mother!.. my lawyers are handling everything as we speak,” he wrote on Instagram.

Friday Music Guide: New Music From Zach Bryan, Twenty One Pilots, Sexyy Red, RM and More

This week, Zach Bryan returns with a lyrical farewell, Twenty One Pilots put a bow on a long-running story, and Sexyy Red gets an assist from Drake. Check out all of this week’s picks below:

Zach Bryan, “Pink Skies”

As he has graduated from cult audiences to stadium crowds, Zach Bryan has never betrayed his storytelling intuition: on “Pink Skies,” a somber and striking new single, the singer-songwriter forgoes any crowd-pleasing impulse to tell a tale of a funeral preparation, addressing a deceased loved one as their grown children get ready to wish them farewell. With careful guitar strums and unabashed harmonica blasts, “Pink Skies” is a full-bodied entry in Bryan’s quickly growing discography — and while its subject matter does not scream “country radio,” he has long succeeded by shrugging off conventional wisdom, and will likely do so again here.

Twenty One Pilots, Clancy

Nearly a decade ago, Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface introduced a multi-album narrative arc from the band, along with producing enormous crossover hits like “Stressed Out” and “Ride”; with Clancy, the best-selling rock duo concludes that particular story, while offering more alternative radio fodder like the contemplative “The Craving” and the quietly grooving “Backslide.” Regardless of how closely you’re monitoring the group’s world-building details, their seventh studio album continues to expand upon a proven formula.

Trending on Billboard

Sexyy Red, In Sexyy We Trust

Although the majority of the initial attention paid to Sexyy Red’s surprise new mixtape will center on Drake’s guest spot on “U My Everything,” which name-checks and flips Metro Boomin’s “BBL Drizzy” beat in a master troll move, the St. Louis rapper more than holds her own across In Sexyy We Trust, which uses the audacious single “Get It Sexyy” as a starting point for a full-blown swagger showcase. Sexyy sounds magnetic when talking trash over bruising beats, and In Sexyy We Trust will endure beyond its most eyebrow-raising guest verse.

RM, Right Place, Wrong Person

By preceding his second solo album with the heartfelt, six-minute-plus sprawl of “Come Back To Me,” RM hinted at a project that was going to showcase his emotional intelligence and creative sensibilities rather than chasing hits; indeed, Right Place, Wrong Person finds the BTS member exploring his artistry unapologetically, offering an honest, sometimes explicit, multi-lingual check-in on a superstar growing into adulthood. Plus, he’s got some great guests: Little Simz, Moses Sumney and DOMi & JD Beck stop by the project, all of whom translate their outside-the-box talents into RM’s world.

PinkPantheress, “Turn It Up”

Since breaking through last year alongside Ice Spice with “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” PinkPantheress has continued to release pillowy, subtly beautiful rhythmic hyperpop, first with her Heaven Knows album and now with her first new single of 2024. “Turn It Up” examines shared music experiences, both in public and then through a more intimate exchange: “You just make me wanna say, ‘Hey, it’s me’ / We’ve been talking twice a week / I like this beat / It just makes me wanna sing,” she sings, right before clowning on her subject for singing the wrong words in the club.

Editor’s Pick: Clairo, “Sexy to Someone”

After her sophomore album Sling leaned into Clairo’s quietest impulses, delightful new single “Sexy to Someone,” which precedes its follow-up Charm, return Claire Cottrill to the hook-friendly indie-pop that made Immunity one of the most engaging debut albums in recent memory. Waxing poetic about the lightning-bolt feeling of catching the eye of a stranger, Clairo bounces her voice off of a gorgeous collection of piano and bass, allowing the instrumentation to amplify her intimate thoughts and returning to a studio mode that suits her impeccably.

Sean Kingston Arrested on Fraud Charges in California Following Florida Home Raid

Sean Kingston was arrested on fraud charges in California on Thursday (May 23). A spokesperson for the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Billboard on Friday morning (May 24) that the “Beautiful Girls” rapper — born Kisean Anderson — was apprehended without incident on a warrant from Florida in Fort Irwin, Calif., which is about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Kingston’s arrest came mere hours after his South Florida mansion rental was raided by Davie Police SWAT team members on Thursday, with officers taking his mother, Janice Turner, into custody and hitting the 61-year-old with fraud and theft charges.

The raid allegedly came in response to a lawsuit filed by attorney Dennis Card, who claimed that Kingston demands items and doesn’t end up paying for them, says NBC Miami.

Trending on Billboard

“He’s got basically a script, he says that he works with Justin Bieber, and that he obviously puts on a big show here, this is a rental house, he doesn’t own it, and he lures people using his celebrity into having them release things without him paying for it and then he simply never pays,” Card claimed of the 34-year-old singer.

“This evening, police in Fort Irwin, CA, arrested Kisean Anderson, aka Sean Kingston (2/3/1990) without incident on a Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant for numerous fraud and theft charges,” read a statement from the Broward Sheriff’s office, which noted that, according to investigators, the singer was slated to be booked into jail in San Bernardino, Calif.

Reporters on the scene at the Southwest Ranches residence in Florida noticed officers loading vans with various items from the artist’s rental home following his mother’s arrest. Kingston attempted to calm fans’ worries in a since-deleted post to his Instagram Story on Thursday. “People love negative energy! I am good, and so is my mother! … My lawyers are handling everything as we speak,” he wrote.

Sean Kingston stormed onto the music scene as a teenager when his “Beautiful Girls” single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 2007. His most recent project arrived in 2022 with Road to Deliverance. At press time a spokesperson for Kingston had not returned Billboard‘s request for comment.

10 Top Lainey Wilson Collaborations

Lainey Wilson, who graces the cover of this year’s Billboard Country Power Players issue, has solidified her status as a top-tier performer, singer, songwriter and all-around entertainer.

She’s the reigning entertainer of the year at both the CMA Awards and the ACM Awards; in the process of winning the ACM’s entertainer of the year accolade, Wilson also won the ACM’s coveted triple crown for her career –she’s previously won the new female artist of the year honor in 2022, followed by female artist of the year last year (repeating her win in the category this year).

Over the past few years, Wilson has earned four No. 1 Country Airplay hits, including “Things a Man Oughta Know” and the three-week No. 1 “Watermelon Moonshine.”

In addition to her solo efforts, Wilson has become a coveted collaborator, who has released duets with artists including Dolly Parton, Wynonna Judd, Keith Urban, Terri Clark, Lauren Alaina, Charlie Worsham and CCM-country artist Anne Wilson. Her collaboration with Jelly Roll, “Save Me,” not only spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart, but earned a Grammy nomination for best country duo/group performance.

Wilson has steadily piled up the career wins. She’s had a recurring role on Yellowstone, picked up the Grammy for best country album (for her project Bell Bottom Country) in February, and is slated to launch her headlining Country’s Cool Again tour on May 31 in Nashville — the same day her new Nashville establishment, Bell Bottoms Up Bar, opens. She was also just invited by none other than Country Music Hall of Famer Reba McEntire to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry (she’ll be inducted June 7).

Here, we look at 10 of Wilson’s top collaborations.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Faces Another Sexual Assault Lawsuit, Claiming He Drugged College Student In 1990s

Sean “Diddy” Combs is facing yet another sexual abuse lawsuit, this time filed by a woman who claims that he drugged and sexually assaulted her 30 years ago while she was a college student in New York City.

In a complaint filed Thursday in Manhattan court, April Lampros alleges that the rapper subjected her to “an aggressive, coercive, and abusive relationship based on sex,” including four instances of sexual assault.

In one such allegation, she says Combs forced her to take ecstasy and have sex with his former girlfriend Kim Porter. Though she “vocally opposed” the idea, she said she feared that Combs “blacklist her in the industry.”

“Ms. Lampros knew that she had to comply because she had witnessed what happens when someone defies Mr. Combs,” her lawyers write. “She had also been threatened and victimized by Mr. Combs and did not want to cause a problem because she feared him.”

Thursday’s lawsuit also names Sony Music Entertainment as a defendant, claiming the company “enabled” Combs’ conduct. She claims that she worked for Sony’s Arista Records when at least one of the attacks occurred, and that Sony “knew or should have known that Combs was not fit to be in a position of authority.”

Representatives for both Combs and Sony did not immediately return requests for comment.

Lampros is the seventh alleged victim to file a lawsuit accusing Combs of sexual abuse over the past six months, including one filed just days ago by a model named Crystal McKinney who claims the hip-hop mogul forced her to perform oral sex on him following a Men’s Fashion Week event in 2003. The rapper is also reportedly facing a federal criminal investigation over abuse accusations.

In previous statements, Combs has strongly denied any wrongdoing. But after a video surfaced last week showing Combs attacking one of those accusers – then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura – he said he took “full responsibility” for that incident and was “truly sorry.”

In her complaint, Lampros claims that she met Combs in 1994 while she was a college student at New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology. After she told him about her “dreams of working in the fashion industry,” Lampros says Combs promised to mentor her and help her find work in the industry.

But she says the relationship quickly turned sexual, including “four terrifying sexual encounters” and threats of physical violence. One such incident occurred after a night out in 1995, when she claims that she began to feel unwell after taking just “a few sips of one drink.”

“Ms. Lampros pleaded with Mr. Combs to stop, and he ignored her,” her attorneys write. “Ms. Lampros could not process why this was occurring and felt a loss of control. Ms. Lampros was being raped by Mr. Combs, and she soon passed out.”

Thoughout the relationship, Lampros claims that Combs exercised power over her due to his fame and influence: “She felt that if she disobeyed him, he would take away her dreams of pursuing a career in his world.”

Lampros also claims that Combs surreptitiously filmed one of their sexual encounters and then shared the video with others. She says she learned of the tape in 2023, when an unnamed man told her boyfriend that “he should reconsider dating her because he personally saw a video of her and Sean Combs having sex.”

The lawsuit alleges that all of the defendants violated New York City’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law. The case also includes counts of civil battery, sexual assault and negligent infliction of emotional distress against Combs.

In a clip from the concert, the Jonas Brothers bandmates walk side-by-side down the stage’s catwalk, Nick playing guitar as Joe passionately sings lead vocals. The latter’s band with Jack Lawless and JinJoo Lee reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the funk-pop hit in 2015.

Moments before taking the stage with his brother, Joe enjoyed Nick’s set in the audience with Diplo. Later, the “Where Are U Now” DJ posted a video on Instagram of the moment the “Jealous” singer said, “Joe, where you at?,” prompting the elder Jonas to grab a microphone from Diplo’s hand and join in.

Both brothers looked dapper in fancy off-white suits, Joe wearing a black ribbon around his collar and Nick opting for a more traditional bowtie.

The concert comes amid their ongoing Jonas Brothers tour with oldest sibling Kevin. Earlier this month, however, the trio was forced to postpone a handful of their Mexico shows due to Nick’s health issues.

“Hi guys. I have come down with the nasty strain of influenza-A that’s been going around, and I’m not able to sing at the moment,” he wrote in a statement at the time. “We always want to be able to give you guys the best show and I’m just not able to do that for these shows in Mexico at this time.”

The global tour, which will last through mid-October, supports the Jo Bros’ latest record, The Album, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in May last year. In July, they released a single with K-pop boy band TOMORROW X TOGETHER titled “Do It Like That,” which they followed up in November with “Strong Enough” featuring Bailey Zimmerman.
