Nicki Minaj Detained for Allegedly ‘Carrying Drugs’ in Amsterdam Amid Pink Friday 2 World Tour

Nicki Minaj was seemingly arrested in Amsterdam on Saturday (May 25) while on her way to perform a concert in the United Kingdom.

The “Super Bass” rapper captured the incident in an Instagram Live video that was later reposted by her fans on social media. In the clip, an Amsterdam official is heard saying he wants to take Minaj into custody for “carrying drugs,” despite her claim that she was not holding any contraband.

“I’m not going in there. I need a lawyer present,” Minaj, 41, replies to the authorities, who repeatedly ask her to step into a vehicle and stop recording.

Minaj was scheduled to perform at Manchester’s Co-Op Live on Saturday night as part of her Pink Friday 2 Tour. Another officer in the video is heard referencing the concert, saying officials would “try to get [her] there” as soon as possible.

“Oh, so I’m under arrest?” she asks as the officials, who responds with, “Yes.” He didn’t offer any further explanation.

The clip ends with Minaj voluntarily getting into the police van.

It was not clear at press time if Minaj had been booked at a police station. A spokesperson for Royal Netherlands Marechaussee military police told TMZ that an American woman had been arrested for possessing “soft drugs,” but declined to identify the individual by name or the specific type of alleged drugs.

Billboard has reached out to Minaj’s representatives for comment.

The “Super Freaky Girl” rapper shared another video on Saturday that appears to be an airport official telling her that authorities need to search her bags.

“Now they said they found weed & that another group of ppl have to come here to weigh the pre-rolls,” Minaj wrote on X (formerly Twitter), later noting that her plane was being delayed a couple hours.

“Keep in mind they took my bags without consent,” she added, pointing out that marijuana is legal in Amsterdam. “My security has already advised them those pre-rolls belong to him. Oh yea & the pilot wants me to take my ig post down.”

On Instagram, the rapper suggested that her Pink Friday 2 tour was being “sabotaged.” “They’ve been trying to stop me from coming to every show,” she wrote. “They took my bags before I could see them. Put it on the plane. Now saying they’re waiting on customs. This is what it looks like when ppl are paid big money to try to sabotage a tour after all else failed. Everything they’ve done is illegal.”

The incident prompted the Barbz to share their displeasure on social media, resulting in the hashtag “#FREENICKI” trending on X.

‘Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter’: How to Stream the Docuseries for Free Without Cable

Fallen Idols, a four-part documentary exploring the “lives and controversies” of Nick and Aaron Carter, premieres on Investigation Discovery on Monday (May 27).

The docuseries delves into the Carter’s music careers, relationships and the “tragedies and headline-making events of the past few years” including sexual assault allegations against Nick brought on by three women: Ashley Repp, Shannon “Shay” Ruth and Melissa Schuman of the girl group Dream.

Trending on Billboard

Repp, Ruth and Schuman appear in the documentary, which also chronicles the “intense backlash” they endured from speaking out and how their lives have been impacted.

Schuman first went public with rape allegations in 2017. She accuses Nick of raping her in 2003 and filed a lawsuit against him in 2023. Repp, who accuses Nick of sexually assaulting her in 2001, sued him for sexual battery in 2022. Ruth sued in 2022 accusing Nick of raping her when she was 15 years old.

The Backstreet Boys singer has denied sexual assault allegations and countersued Schuman and Ruth in 2023. According to The Wrap, Nick’s attorney’s posted documents in response to interviews featured in the docuseries via the website, FallenIdolsDocumentary.com.

The trailer features social media clips of Aaron backing his brother’s accusers, which resulted in a public feud between the brothers leading up to the 34-year-old singer’s death in 2022.

In addition to the three women, Fall Idols features interviews with an unnamed Carter family member, Nick’s ex-girlfriend Kaya Jones and Melanie Martin, Aaron’s former fiancé.

When asked about how she feels about proving haters wrong amid her success, the superstar replied, “No, maybe three years ago there would have been a sense of vindication, but now it just feels playful. I don’t know why. If you hang in long enough, it just feels easy. There’s no vindication, no nothing – I’m just kind of happy to be here.  It’s easy-going in that way.”

As for her foray into the country world, Del Rey recalled a moment she had with friend and producer Jack Antonoff before the Billboard and NMPA Songwriter Awards in February, where she initially announced the forthcoming album. “When I gave Jack Antonoff his award for Best Producer Of The Year, I said, ‘Welcome Nashville to Hollywood and Hollywood, welcome to Nashville because the music business has gone, gone country. And it went silent; 5000 people, dead silent. Then the next week, we had three major artists announce big country albums.”

She continued, “So where’s ‘Lasso’ going? I really have no idea now!”

The project is slated for release in September, and marks her 10th studio LP. The release is the followup to 2023’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Morgan Wallen’s Nashville Bar Grand Opening Has Been Postponed at the Last Minute

Morgan Wallen was slated to open his downtown Nashville bar during Memorial Day weekend, but those plans have been postponed.

Wallen’s This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen, located at 107 4th Ave. N., won’t open this weekend as planned, according to representatives for TC Restaurant Group, the organization that teamed with Wallen to open the establishment, and which is also behind other Nashville celebrity bars from Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean. No new opening date has been given.

A statement from Wallen’s This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen issued to Billboard read, “We’re proud of our team who has worked tirelessly to prepare Morgan Wallen’s This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen for opening. The ground-up construction of a six-story venue launching with hundreds of team members is a tremendous amount of work and a complex process.”

The statement continues, “When we open, we want This Bar to be an exceptional experience for guests. Unfortunately, the process requires more time, and we are not able to open and provide that experience this Memorial Day weekend. Rest assured it will be well worth the wait. We look forward to welcoming guests soon.”

Trending on Billboard

A source tells Billboard that the restaurant/bar is awaiting final inspections, but declined to address whether TC Restaurant Group had been denied a catering license (which allows an establishment to sell liquor, wine and beer), as had been reported by online site, Scoop Nashville, or had even applied yet. The source did confirm that the postponement of the grand opening is not related to the Nashville Metro Council’s decision earlier this week to deny approval for an external sign for the bar.

On Tuesday (May 21), the council rejected plans for Wallen’s 20-foot external sign–labeled an “aerial encroachment” that would have encroached on the sidewalk, which is city property– for the six-story building. Thirty members of the council voted against the sign, with only three members voting in favor of it and four abstaining. Some members of the council cited Wallen’s past controversial incidents, including his use of a racial slur in January 2021 and his arrest on felony charges last month for throwing a chair off the six-story roof off of Eric Church’s Chief’s bar, as reasons for rejecting the sign.

Wallen announced the bar’s opening on May 4 at one of his three sold-out Nissan Stadium shows in Nashville, though never specified the exact date. “It’s over off 4th Ave. just beside the Ryman [Auditorium], and it’s going to be opening Memorial Day weekend, so I hope I see y’all there,” Wallen said from the stage. The bar’s official instagram picked up the video of Wallen making the announcement, but has since taken it down, and now has only a post with a video of downtown Nashville with the name of Wallen’s bar and the words “Coming Summer 2024.”

Wallen’s representative referred inquiries to TC Restaurant Group.

Morgan Spurlock, Director of One Direction Documentary & ‘Super Size Me,’ Dies at 53

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, an Oscar nominee whose most famous works skewered America’s food industry and who notably ate only at McDonald’s for a month to illustrate the dangers of a fast-food diet, has died. He was 53.

Spurlock died Thursday in New York from complications of cancer, according to a statement issued Friday by his family.

“It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” Craig Spurlock, who worked with him on several projects, said in the statement. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

Spurlock made a splash in 2004 with his groundbreaking film Super Size Me, which was nominated for an Academy Award. The film chronicled the detrimental physical and psychological effects of Spurlock eating only McDonald’s food for 30 days. He gained about 25 pounds, saw a spike in his cholesterol and lost his sex drive.

Trending on Billboard

“Everything’s bigger in America,” he said in the film. “We’ve got the biggest cars, the biggest houses, the biggest companies, the biggest food, and finally: the biggest people.”

In one scene, Spurlock showed kids a photo of George Washington and none recognized the Founding Father. But they all instantly knew the mascots for Wendy’s and McDonald’s.

The film grossed more than $22 million on a $65,000 budget and preceded the release of Eric Schlosser’s influential Fast Food Nation, which accused the industry of being bad for the environment and rife with labor issues.

Spurlock returned in 2017 with Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! — a sobering look at an industry that processes 9 billion animals a year in America. He focused on two issues: chicken farmers stuck in a peculiar financial system and the attempt by fast-food chains to deceive customers into thinking they’re eating healthier.

“We’re at an amazing moment in history from a consumer standpoint where consumers are starting to have more and more power,” he told the Associated Press in 2019. “It’s not about return for the shareholders. It’s about return for the consumers.”

Spurlock was a gonzo-like filmmaker who leaned into the bizarre and ridiculous. His stylistic touches included zippy graphics and amusing music, blending a Michael Moore-ish camera-in-your-face style with his own sense of humor and pathos.

“I wanted to be able to lean into the serious moments. I wanted to be able to breathe in the moments of levity. We want to give you permission to laugh in the places where it’s really hard to laugh,” he told the AP.

After he exposed the fast-food and chicken industries, there was an explosion in restaurants stressing freshness, artisanal methods, farm-to-table goodness and ethically sourced ingredients. But nutritionally not much had changed.

“There has been this massive shift and people say to me, ‘So has the food gotten healthier?’ And I say, ‘Well, the marketing sure has,’” he said.

Not all his work dealt with food. Spurlock made documentaries about the boy band One Direction and the geeks and fanboys at Comic-Con. One of his films looked at life behind bars at the Henrico County Jail in Virginia.

With 2008’s Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?, Spurlock went on a global search to find the al-Qaida leader, who was killed in 2011. In POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Spurlock tackled questions of product placement, marketing and advertising.

“Being aware is half the battle, I think. Literally knowing all the time when you’re being marketed to is a great thing,” Spurlock told AP at the time. “A lot of people don’t realize it. They can’t see the forest for the trees.”

Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! was to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017 but it was shelved at the height of the #MeToo movement when Spurlock came forward to detail his own history of sexual misconduct.

He confessed that he had been accused of rape while in college and had settled a sexual harassment case with a female assistant. He also admitted to cheating on numerous partners. “I am part of the problem,” he wrote.

“For me, there was a moment of kind of realization — as somebody who is a truth-teller and somebody who has made it a point of trying to do what’s right — of recognizing that I could do better in my own life. We should be able to admit we were wrong,” he told the AP.

Spurlock grew up in Beckley, West Virginia. His mother was an English teacher who he remembered would correct his work with a red pen. He graduated with a BFA in film from New York University in 1993.

He is survived by two sons — Laken and Kallen; his mother Phyllis Spurlock; father Ben; brothers Craig and Barry; and former spouses Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein, the mothers of his children.

T.I. Says Kendrick Lamar & Drake Should Go on Tour

T.I. appeared on DJ Whoo Kid’s SiriusXM Whoo’s House Podcast and naturally pulled out the thesaurus.

The Atlanta rap legend called the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake “probably one of the more exacerbated beefs” he’s seen before suggesting the pair should do a tour together. “I got respect for both of them,” he said. “I think they’re both phenomenal hitmakers and I’m just waiting on the tour. That’s the only thing. Listen, after the disagreement, the only thing that’s gon’ sell is the reunion.”

While he isn’t wrong, a tour featuring the two is probably not in the cards right now. If you recall, Drake famously brought Kendrick along during his Club Paradise Tour in 2012, something the OVO captain mentioned in his “Buried Alive Interlude” parody he posted on his Instagram.

Last week, T.I. stopped by Real 92.3 in L.A. to talk to Big Boy when he was asked about the beef. He admitted that it’s good for the game in general, however, Tip felt the battle could be holding back other artists from dropping. “They done kinda f—ed it up for some other people who were planning to drop in this period. I think some people were like, ‘Damn, I was gon’ drop, let me see this through.’”

Trending on Billboard

T.I. isn’t wrong. Taylor Swift found herself in the middle of the beef when Drake mentioned Lamar needed permission from Swift to drop a diss record on “Taylor Made Freestyle” and in turn K. Dot tapped Taylor’s producer Jack Antonoff to help out on the diss track “6:16 in LA.” Whoo Kid is slightly involved in this feud on Drake’s side as he lent his legendary DJ drop to the Toronto rapper for his diss track “Push Ups.” There were also rumors swirling about a Whoo Kid hosted disstape that never surfaced.

If you’re wondering why outlets want to know T.I.’s thoughts on this particular rap battle, it’s because the Grand Hustle boss has seen his fair share of rap ways, most notably when he pulled up to the late Shawty Lo’s house back in 2008 for the “What Up, What’s Haapnin‘” video.

We won’t hold our breath when it comes to the tour he suggested, though.

Record Store Crawl 2024: Busload of Vinyl Fans and Quarters of Change Usher in Return of Warner Music Tradition

Warner Music Group’s revived Record Store Crawl returned to New York City last weekend after a five-year absence, complete with a bus full of music and vinyl fans — including Billboard’s Retail Track — that kicked things off at Tower Records’ Tower Labs space in Brooklyn with a rocking performance from 300 Entertainment recording artists Quarters of Change.

The crawl’s bus, transporting about 40 music fans, went on to visit Academy Records in Brooklyn, Audio-Technica showroom in lower Manhattan, Generation Records in the West Village; and finally, Rough Trade Records up in Rockefeller Center, all on Saturday (May 18).

Upcoming crawls are scheduled in Seattle on June 14; Austin on July 20; Nashville on Aug. 10; Chicago on Sept. 28; and Los Angeles on Oct. 19. Tickets for each crawl costs $77.45. Just like the New York Crawl, those cities will likely feature an artist performance and so far, Joe P has been lined up for the ones in Seattle and Austin; Knox for the one in Nashville; Deux Visages for Chicago; and Alicia Creti for Los Angeles.

Trending on Billboard

What’s more, vinyl and music lovers can visit the Record Store Crawl website to vote for which U.S. city will be the winner of a crawl slated for Sept. 7. All the crawls are sponsored in partnership with Audio-Technica and HeadCount. When fans vote on the WMG Record Store Crawl website for which city should receive the September crawl, the site asks if the voter is registered to vote in U.S. elections. If they aren’t, or are simply unsure, a link takes them to the headcount.org website where they can either check their status or register to vote.

The last time WMG had a Record Store Crawl was a year prior to the COVID-19 shutdown. Before the pandemic, the then-named WEA (now named WMX) held 40 Crawls in cities across the United States from 2016 through 2019, according to WMX senior director of retail & platform marketing (RPM) Gina Williams. In NYC, they were mainly held on Record Store Day. However, nowadays record stores have plenty going on that day, Williams said, so WMG’s team chose other days to bring a traffic boost to stores.

While the Record Store Day Crawl was happening in New York, WMX’s RPM team was hosting some 165 early listening events for Twenty One Pilots‘ new album, Clancy, out now on Fueled By Ramen. According to a statement issued by the company, “thousands of fans nationwide packed into their local record stores to hear the album early, connect with fellow fans and experience what independent record stores are all about: community and love of music. Moreover, in the prior year, 2023, the RPM Team hosted 972 listening party indie store activations in 2023 for 12 releases. The RPM Team and Atlantic Records were nominated for a 2024 Music Biz Bizzy for our Barbie, The Album listening events.”

In New York, Record Store Crawl fans lined up at noon outside Tower’s performance space in Williamsburg to get a bag of swag from the Warner family of labels. Retail Track’s bag contained the Keith Sweat Make It Last Forever limited-edition black ice vinyl album and a “Brother” 45 from Needtobreathe, plus stickers and other tchotchkes; as well as a raffle ticket, which would come in very handy on the bus ride between stops on the crawl.

Inside Tower, the crawlers were treated to a high-energy seven-song set from Quarters of Change, who performed tracks from its debut album, Into the Rift, and its just released follow-up, Portraits.

Quarters of Change perform at Tower Records’ Tower Labs space in Brooklyn on May 18.

After the band’s set, the tour loaded onto the bus and headed to the next stop: Academy Records Annex in Greenpoint, where Retail Track scored a few singles: O.V. Wright’s “Precious Precious” on Hi Records; Arthur Prysock’s “I Wantcha Baby,” on Hy Weiss’ Old Town Records; and Shirley Brown’s “Woman To Woman” on Truth Records.

After that, the bus headed to Manhattan via the Williamsburg Bridge and the mother of all traffic jams, moving literally an inch at a time. That led to plenty of opportunities for WMX’s RPM senior manager Ross Srodo to show off his emcee prowess, while WMX RPM creative manager Eden Mili supplied pithy embellishments in her role as ace ticket number reader as the duo raffled off plenty of Record Store Day exclusives and other limited edition and/or deluxe vinyl records — all from the Warner Music family of labels, naturally. During that ride, Han Mu, one of the crawlers, said he heard about the Record Store Crawl through an Instagram post. He also hailed the crawl’s pricing, saying, “it is totally worth it.”

In Manhattan, the first stop was at Audio-Technica House, the audio equipment brand’s collaboration space in SoHo, where crawlers were treated to Banshee Winery wines and a music trivia game with the winner taking home a turntable. The rest of the crawlers got an Audio-Technica record cleaning kit.

Up next, a quick ride to Generation Records, where crawlers had the pleasure of flipping through the stacks while dining on Williamsburg Pizza. Retail Track hit the downstairs used records bargain bin and scored 10 vinyl albums, including ones by The Association, Dakota Staton, Gene Pitney, Jimmy Ruffin, Joan Armatrading and Renaissance — the latter on Warner Bros. Records.

The Record Store Crawl itself wasn’t the only attraction, as Hannah Tebo bought a ticket especially to see the performance by Quarters of Change, as did Ellen Cainsford, who flew in from Austin because she said she wanted to “see the band in a special venue for an intimate performance.” Besides her, two others traveled in from North Carolina for the Record Store Crawl, while two more music fans came from Philadelphia, WMX RPM manager Mel Hoch reported to Retail Track.

Finally, the day culminated at Rough Trade where Retail Track scored Quarters of Change’s Portrait LP. “It was great to have a busload of eager record fans of all ages pop in and take over our store briefly,” store manager George Flanagan tells Billboard. “It was a very good day already and then the music fans from the bus provided a nice spike. We sold a lot of music.”

Much like last month’s Record Store Day, Retail Track once again heard the siren call of (this time) a cold Budweiser, which was easily scored around the corner from Rough Trade at the Pig & Whistle pub. After all, Retail Track needed something to wash down the wine taste from back at Audio-Technica House.
