ITZY Share Mental Health Tips, Reflect on Team Growth Ahead of U.S. Dates For ‘Born to Be World Tour’

From journaling and meditating to watching Wes Anderson movies and taking vitamins, ITZY ensures they prioritize their personal well-being amid the K-pop girl group’s massive 2024 Born to Be World Tour, hitting the U.S. next month.

Taking a moment to share their experiences on the road during a few (busy) non-tour days in Korea, the K-pop girl group famous for dynamic performances and self-love anthems pauses to reflect. While ITZY admits traveling across six continents so far requires vast amounts of physical and mental energy, it’s the audiences and the members themselves they can depend on to replenish them every night.

But for the times they aren’t connecting with their fans — affectionately known as MIDZY — or one another, the group finds ways to balance the demanding lifestyle with mental health as a priority for the members. As individuals, Yeji practices honesty, Ryujin enjoys her free time to the fullest, Chaeryeong journals to process her emotions, and Yuna meditates. The group’s strong bond is evident even in a makeup-free evening Zoom call from the JYP Entertainment offices in Seoul as the four members finish one another’s sentences, crack smiles over each other’s answers, and also share how they keep in touch with fellow member Lia, who has been focusing on her mental health after taking an extended hiatus from the group since last September regarding “tension and anxiety.”

As ITZY gears up for 10 North American concerts, commencing on June 6 at Seattle’s WAMU Theater, the girls look forward to bringing their latest Billboard 200 album Born to Be album to life, showing off their live band for the first in the States, and communicating on a deeper level with local fans.

As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, who better than the honest barrier-breakers of ITZY to share how they’ve matured? While mental health still faces stigma and prejudice around the world — and is not as widely discussed in Korea compared to America —Yeji, Ryujin, Chaeryeong and Yuna speak candidly about the ways they have matured, aspects they are working on and, perhaps most importantly, the bond that keeps them going together.

“The biggest source of motivation for me is our members, ITZY,” Chaeryeong says. Read for more from the quartet about this vital topic and plans for their upcoming concerts.

Billboard: Thanks for taking time in the middle of your world tour. You’re between dates before the Japan and U.S. concerts start, so how has the tour been so far?

Yuna: It was our first time in Europe and Latin America, so it was really, really like a new experience for us. There were some really beautiful cities and we really enjoyed that time. For me, I really liked Amsterdam. The weather and the people are really good — and the views were so good. Everyone should go.

You had 13 days off from your May 4th concert in Madrid to your May 17 concert in Toyko. What do you do during this time?

Yuna: We are super busy! [Laughs]

Ryujin: There are many things that we are working on, but also we’re preparing for these big shows and our Japanese comeback [with “Algorithm”]. We’re always practicing or doing something to help us achieve things, I think?

I’ve heard artists share a range of different feelings about touring. From it being too exhausting to fans being their energy. What are your experiences?

Chaeryeong: To speak honestly, it’s definitely true that we’ll expend a lot of our physical and mental energy [on tour]. But once we go on stage, I think it gets all deleted — we get that much energy from our fans. So, it’s a wonderful experience for me.

Yuna: When I visit new cities to do concerts, I try to do my best on the stage for our fans. But I also spend as much time as I can with my members. That’s kind of the healing point for me, as well as the way I heal during touring. Just their existence really helps me. When I’m onstage and see our members’ faces, that’s all the support I need.

Are there specific ways you work to stay healthy on the road — physically, mentally, or emotionally?

Yeji: There is a physician who was with us on tour for every spot we go. The physician recommended I take a vitamin powder that’s supposed to help the body with energy. She said that it’s really helpful if we keep it in our throat and swallow it all at once, and I’ve found that’s been really helpful in keeping me healthy, so I keep following that advice.

Chaeryeong: To keep my vocals strong, I carry propolis with me — it’s a gel type of medicine that you put on your throat. It can be minty and soothing; I think it’s famous in New Zealand? That’s good for your throat.

Yeji: I also try to change my vocalizations and the way I make sounds on the stage. Lots of time, I have to try to do less to not strain my throat and [save my voice for the next concert date].

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I think it’s a great opportunity to share how you support your mental and emotional health. What are some things you do individually to take care of yourself?

Chaeryeong: For me, I write in my diary. I write things that I like or very detailed happy memories so I can memorize, like, every little detail for a long time. But there are also things I write when I’m having a hard time, the sad or negative memories, to drop those feelings off from my heart.

Yuna: I always try to make time for self-focusing time — writing and meditating. I really focus on myself and that’s how I stay centered. But it’s so hard. When I meditate, I tend to always fall asleep. [Laughs] It’s also a good way to fall asleep!

Ryujin: I don’t really do anything special for my mental health, but I give free time to myself. As you know, a tour and our performances require a lot of energy, and also we have a job that we have to meet many people. So, I think when I have free time, I use that time to regain my energy again and do the things that I like — watching a movie in a theater or rewatching a series or drama again. There are so many great movies and dramas, but if I had to recommend one, I would choose The French Dispatch. It’s a Wes Anderson movie. It’s really touching, but at the same time, there’s a lot of variety in it.

Yeji: These days, I’m trying to be honest about my own feelings and what I feel. If something sad happens, even just slightly, I feel that emotion enough and then can just “let it go.” I’m trying to react fully on my feelings and laugh at the small things, too.

Yeji, it’s interesting to hear that you’re being honest with your feelings now. As ITZY’s leader, did you sometimes dismiss your feelings when leading a team?

Yeji: Since our debut and our early stages, there were some times I did try to hide [my feelings] because the team is very important. But these days, even if I try to hide everything, the members know me so well — we’re family — that even if I try, they know first how I feel and think. So, I don’t have to actually hide — and that’s why I’m trying to get more honest with expressing my feelings.

Thank you for sharing those, ITZY. She’s not here with us right now because she’s also focusing on her mental health, but how are you keeping in touch with Lia?

Yeji: Just the other day, I watched a video from the past with all five of us and I texted it to Lia. So, we talked and chatted. We are all keeping in touch with her often.

Looking wider, being an artist—in K-pop especially, but anywhere in the world—requires a strong mentality. You were all teenagers when you debuted and now you’re adults. How have you seen yourselves maturing since then?

Ryujin: We were all teenagers and it was our first experience to have a team like this where we stuck with each other 24-7. At first, when we were all together, it was a little bit hard to be with and work with people different than me. ITZY was just five, but it was really hard to understand each other — despite that it was only five. Understanding one another took time. But I think after struggling with the members and talking a lot, the biggest difference from that time and now is my understanding of others. There has been a much wider range of people I feel like I can understand now.

Yuna, as the youngest member who debuted when you were 15, what have you learned?

Yuna: It’s been quite a while since we’ve debuted, so I think I learned to become more used to circumstances and people — what’s needed in the atmosphere of our lives [as K-pop stars]. So, I got to understand these realities much more deeply. But the biggest thing I try to maintain is my passion — the passion I got and the feelings I had at my first stage [performance]. My biggest thing is trying to keep that.

Thank you for discussing an important topic. The U.S. leg of the Born to Be Tour begins in June. Have you prepared anything special or different for these shows?

Yuna: English! We are preparing 100 percent of our audience talking in English to communicate more.

Yeji: Not only are some of the venues bigger and the concerts feel bigger in scale, but we paid a lot of attention and poured a lot into the directing of the concert. So you can see a new direction in the stages as well as the VCR too. While we have taken many dancers who have been with us on past tours, I think the variety of performances has also been upgraded a little more than the last world tour, Checkmate.

Chaeryeong: We also have a live band which is a big point for the new tour.

This is the Born to Be World Tour centered around your album of the same name, including ITZY’s first-ever solo songs you all wrote, composed, and perform in concert. How was the experience, and will we see more songwriting?

Yeji: After working on my solo song [“Crown on My Head”], I came to know that it’s quite a very difficult process and not very simple. So, I got to thank the staff, composers, writers, and those people around me who always write and make songs for us. So, actually, this song became even more precious to me because I recognized how difficult this process is and that’s why I can perform on the stage with my whole passion. As for future songs, I’ll always try if I have a chance. Yeah, if I have a chance.

Anything else you want to share with fans before the U.S. tour dates?

Ryujin: First of all, we’re coming to you in June so please come to our concert. We’re always thankful for you supporting us despite the hundreds of miles of distance. We will try our best to see you guys much more often. Thank you.

Yuna: Also, it’s our second world so it will be more…more…there will be much more things to see so please come to our concert!

Robert De Niro Bashes “Clown” Donald Trump Outside Of NY Courthouse

Robert De Niro ripped Donald Trump in a speech outside of the courthouse where he is on trial in New York City, even facing off with his supporters.

As the closing arguments for Donald Trump’s election interference/“hush money” trial began in a courtroom in New York City Tuesday (May 28), renowned actor Robert De Niro held a press conference to express his disdain for the twice-impeached former president and to warn others of what would happen. “That Donald Trump is just across the street because he doesn’t belong in my city,” De Niro began. “I don’t know where he belongs, but he surely doesn’t belong here. We New Yorkers used to tolerate him when he was just another grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot, a two-bit playboy lying his way into the tabloids, pretending to be a spokesman, a spokesperson for himself. A clown.”

The Academy Award winner described the potential for more harm to the country if the “tyrant” were to be reelected. “I don’t mean to scare you. No, no, wait — maybe I do mean to scare you,” he continued. “If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss these freedoms goodbye that we all take for granted. And elections — forget about it. That’s over; that’s done. If he gets in, I can tell you right now, he will never leave.”

Flanked by Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone, two former Capitol Police officers who were assaulted by the January 6 rioters, DeNiro referenced what they faced. “On January 6, Republican lawmakers unspeakably tried to keep the loser, Trump the loser, Trump, in the White House. They are the true heroes. These guys are the true heroes. They stood and put their lives on the line for these low lives for Trump.”

De Niro’s powerful speech struck a chord with those present as it comes on the heels of a new advertisement for the Biden-Harris reelection campaign that the 80-year-old thespian narrates as images and videos of Trump are played, including the clip where he says, “If I don’t get in, there’s going to be a bloodbath!!” He would clash with supporters of Trump who hurled insults at him as he walked back to his car after the news conference, One protester yelled, “You’re washed up,” to which De Niro fired back “F— you!” Some fans present cheered De Niro’s words, with one shouting, “I loved you in Taxi Driver!”

Judge Rules Lawsuit Against Bad Bunny Targeting Hundreds of Reggaeton Songs Can Move Forward

A federal judge ruled Wednesday (May 29) that a sprawling copyright lawsuit can move forward with accusations that nearly 2,000 reggaeton songs — including hits by Bad Bunny, Karol G and dozens of others — all infringed a single 1989 song that allegedly spawned the so-called “dem bow” rhythm.

The huge infringement case, filed by Cleveland “Clevie” Browne and the heirs of Wycliffe “Steely” Johnson, claims that their 1989 song, “Fish Market,” was the source of dem bow — the boom-ch-boom-chick, boom-ch-boom-chick percussion featured in nearly every reggaeton song.

Demanding that the case be dismissed, Bad Bunny’s lawyers argued last year that Steely & Clevie’s massive case “seeks to monopolize practically the entire reggaetón musical genre for themselves” by claiming copyright control over “unprotectable” musical elements.

Trending on Billboard

But in the lawsuit’s first key decision, Judge André Birotte Jr. denied that motion on Wednesday, ruling that it was too early in the case to make those kinds of complex rulings and that Steely & Clevie had made a strong enough argument to move forward: “It is premature at this stage to find that the musical elements alleged are insufficiently original or indeed unprotectable.”

Notably, the judge also hinted that he might not be particularly receptive to such arguments when it’s time to rule on them. At one point, he warned that he “rejects” the idea that the massive success of a particular song could be used as a “double-edged sword” that would also void its copyrights.

“The court recognizes the practice of musical borrowing, and in doing so, cannot merely conclude that because the reggaeton genre (or artists) have purportedly borrowed significantly from attributes of plaintiffs’ work that those attributes are now in effect commonplace elements,” Judge Birotte wrote.

First filed in 2021 against just a handful of defendants, Steely & Clevie’s lawsuit has steadily grown to cover more and more artists and songs. In the latest iteration, the duo’s lawyers name more than 150 artists, also including Pitbull, Drake, Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi and Justin Bieber, plus units of all three major music companies.

Steely & Clevie’s lawyers claim that over 1,800 reggaetón songs featuring iterations of the dem bow rhythm were, at root, illegally copied from “Fish Market” — and that their clients deserve monetary compensation for them. Potentially damages are difficult to calculate, but could easily reach into the billions if the case is successful.

In Wednesday’s decision, Judge Birotte also rejected other arguments from the defendants beyond the core question of whether dem bow could be protected by copyright law.

For instance, in a June filing, attorneys for Daddy Yankee and the major labels argued that the case was so massive that it had become procedurally unfair. They called it a “shotgun pleading,” filled with so many vague accusations that it was “impossible for defendants to determine what each is alleged to have done.”

But in Wednesday’s decision, Judge Birotte said he was “unconvinced” by that argument — and that Steely & Clevie’s 228-page complaint had sufficiently laid out the case to satisfy procedural requirements.

Following Wednesday’s ruling, the case will proceed toward discovery, where both sides will exchange evidence, take depositions and seek expert testimony on complex questions relating to musicology. If the judge does not decide the case after discovery, the two sides will head to trial.

Neither side in the case immediately returned requests for comment.

Hacker Group Says It Stole Data From 560M Ticketmaster Accounts & Is Offering It for Sale

A well-known hacking group claims to have breached Ticketmaster and is attempting to sell the personal data of 560 million Ticketmaster users, including their payment details, for $500,000, according to the website Hackread.

Alleged hacking group ShinyHunters has claimed credit for the break-in, resulting in the theft of 1.3 terabytes of stolen data that includes usernames, contact information, order info and partial payment details, like the last four digits of a customer’s credit card, expiration dates and even details designed to prevent fraud (i.e. mother’s maiden name).

Officials with Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, have not responded to requests for comment from Billboard or confirmed that the breach took place, but Australian officials with the country’s Department of Home Affairs told the Australian Broadcasting Company that it was aware of a cyber incident that was part of a data leak expected to impact millions of Ticketmaster customers globally.

Trending on Billboard

A spokesperson from the Department of Home Affairs told the ABC that the department is “working with Ticketmaster to understand the incident”.

“The data breach, if confirmed, could have severe implications for the affected users, leading to potential identity theft, financial fraud, and further cyber attacks,” the Hackread site explains. “The hacker group’s bold move to put this data on sale goes on to show the growing menace of cybercrime and the increasing sophistication of these cyber adversaries.”

The hack comes as Ticketmaster and Live Nation face attempts by the federal government to break the company up on antitrust grounds. Last week, the Department of Justice’s antitrust division sued Ticketmaster in New York’s Southern District, alleging that the company acted monopolistically. Company officials have vowed to fight the lawsuit.

ShinyHunters emerged on law enforcement’s radar in 2020 and has been linked to breaches affecting more than 60 companies. The group is known to use dark web forums to threaten to leak sensitive consumer information unless the affected companies pay an online ransom. Most breaches are carried out using sophisticated phishing pages that mimic their target’s login portals, tricking employees into entering account credentials and other sensitive data. Members of ShinyHunters then use the stolen credentials to log in to company systems and steal data and customer information.

In January, a U.S. District Court in Seattle sentenced alleged ShinyHunters member Sebastien Raoult to three years in prison and restitution of $5 million after Raoult pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The 22-year-old French national was arrested in Morocco in 2022 and extradited to the United States in January 2023.

ShinyHunters is reportedly selling the Ticketmaster data on Breach Forums, an illegal marketplace that just two weeks ago had been seized by the FBI.

On May 13, FBI officials apprehended the site’s administrator and seized access to login credentials for the entire infrastructure of Breach Forums, including the backend, across its dark web and clear web sites.

“From June 2023 until May 2024, BreachForums was operating as a clearnet marketplace for cybercriminals to buy, sell, and trade contraband, including stolen access devices, means of identification, hacking tools, breached databases, and other illegal services,” FBI official said in a statement at the time.

But several days later, ShinyHunters allegedly contacted the domain registrar of Breach Forums and successfully regained access, according to Hack News, with the FBI seizure notice on the site replaced by a “Site Temporarily Unavailable” message. Earlier today, Breach Forums was updated again, this time with the alleged stolen Ticketmaster data posted on the site for sale.

Sony in Talks to Acquire Queen’s Music Catalog

Sony is the undisclosed suitor that Queen was in an exclusive period with in negotiating the sale of its catalog and other music assets, as reported by Bloomberg today. There have been multiple reports that the catalog was up for sale since Music Business Worldwide first broke the news last May.

So far, Queen is believed to have had initial conversations about the potential deal with Disney, which owns the band’s masters for North America, and Universal Music Group. According to sources, the deal is being shopped by the band’s lawyers.

Trending on Billboard

In fact, each band member was said to have their own lawyers for the deal; early this year, some sources suggested that John Deacon’s share of the band’s assets might not be included in any potential agreement. Putting a deal like this together is a very complex process and with all the personalities involved, it’s still a question of whether one will ultimately be struck. In fact, that very issue — band members with different agendas — is said to have derailed a deal for the Pink Floyd assets a while back. That deal was expected to go for $500 million before it collapsed sometime in 2022.

Sources previously told Billboard that Queen was seeking $1.2 billion for its music assets, a price tag that limited the number of prospective suitors. In order to swallow the hefty price tag, Sony is reportedly partnering with an undisclosed financial player. Previously, Sony had help in acquiring the Bruce Springsteen master recording catalog from Eldridge Industries, which at one time owned Billboard.

Queen’s lawyers and Sony Music representatives were not immediately available for comment.

The Queen catalog includes iconic hit songs such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “Somebody to Love,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “You’re My Best Friend, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.” Since 1991, the catalog has generated slightly more than 38 million album consumption units in the United States and has nearly 46 billion in global on-demand streams, according to Luminate. Go here for a full breakdown of the band’s catalog and financial performance.

If Sony completes the deal, it could very well be the biggest music asset deal ever made, even if it does not command the highest valuation for an artist’s music assets. Late last year, Sony bought half of the Michael Jackson estate for about $600 million, according to sources, though Sony never confirmed the acquisition.

Álvaro Díaz Returns to Top 10 on Latin Rhythm Albums Chart With ‘Sayonara’

“I’m happy and I hope this a new beginning in my career,” Díaz tells Billboard. “It’s always great to see oneself in lists such as Billboard, continuing the sound with which one started.”

Sayonara, which dropped on May 17, the first day of the tracking week, earned 7,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending May 23, according to Luminate. The album’s opening sum is mostly driven by streaming activity. The figure equals to 9.58 million on-demand official streams for the set’s songs during the tracking week.

Trending on Billboard

Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums [TEA] and streaming equivalent albums [SEA]. Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.

Díaz returns to Latin Rhythm Albums for the first time since Dec. 2016, when San Juan Grand Prix, his first chart entry there, debuted and peaked at No. 4, for one week in the top 10.

Elsewhere, the Puerto Rican claims his third entry on the overall Top Latin Albums, where Sayonara launches at No. 14. While San Juan Grand Prix concurrently earned Díaz his maiden chart performance in 2016, in between Felicilandia arrived at its No. 48 high in Nov. 2021.

Only one song preceded Sayonara, “1000Canciones” with San Senra, Díaz’s second top 10: No. 10 peak in April 2023, after “A Donde Van,” with Sebastián Yatra, took him to an equal No. 10 high in Oct. 2020.

Beyond “1000Canciones,” the set’s “Gatitas Sandungueras, Vol. 1,” with Feid, opens at No. 34 on the multi-metric Hot Latin Songs charts, which combines airplay, digital sales and streams. The song logged 2.3 million official U.S. streams.

Nicole Moudaber Releases Statement on Her Canceled Movement 2024 Set: ‘I Can Now See That No One Is to Blame’

This past Sunday (May 26), a severe thunderstorm moved through the Detroit area, forcing the city’s Movement festival to temporarily shut down during its second day. The festival issued an evacuation notice to attendees at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Sunday evening, then reopened later that night at 10:00p.m. after the storm had passed.

The temporary closure forced organizers to move a few of the Sunday night sets, including a scheduled 7:00p.m. performance by techno mainstay Nicole Moudaber, who ultimately did not end up playing.

After the festival, Moudaber explained the situation, writing on X this past Monday (May 27) that “After the rain stopped they called me up to come play at 10pm, I rushed over there, my table was ready to be plugged in but the dj that was supposed to play after me didn’t want to move his set up to accommodate me. As a result, I didn’t play, there was complete silence for a whole hour while people were waiting for the music to start again.

Trending on Billboard

“I have dismantled set ups in the past because of rude behaviour [sic],” Moudaber continued. “I did not do it this time because I love Movement and the people behind it Absolutely shocking to say the least. I know a lot of people came to see me and I’m sorry this has happened.”

Richie Hawtin played this 10:00 p.m. Sunday night slot, debuting his new stage show DEX EFX XOX.

Now, following her initial comments, Moudaber has today (May 29) issued a statement acknowledging that “Having talked with everyone involved, I can now see that no one is to blame for what happened — if anything, we can blame it on the weather!

“Severe storms meant that the festival was evacuated for 3.5 hours before I returned to play my 10pm set,” her statement continues. “Naturally, this threw everything into chaos. The set up for the person playing after me was complicated, and I can appreciate why they needed to keep it intact for their own set.

“Additionally, while the team at Movement did everything possible to accommodate me, they were under a lot of stress following the storm and it wasn’t easy to source the additional monitors required. I have nothing but love for this festival and for the city of Detroit, where I have made so many wonderful memories over the years, and I look forward to returning to play ASAP (ideally the sun will be shining next time)! Love, Nicole”

Movement Festival continued without issue for the rest of the weekend, closing out its third day on Monday, May 27 with performances from Fatboy Slim, Honey Dijon, Indira Paganotto, Seth Troxler and a host of other electronic artists. Festival producer Paxahau also offered free Monday festival entrance for Sunday ticket holders.
