Spotify & iHeartMedia Lead Music Stocks, SM Entertainment Shares Dip Amid Sex Scandal

Spotify’s stock price rose 3.9% this week after the company’s announcement of a U.S. price increase on Monday (June 3) sent the stock on a roller-coaster ride. Shares rose to a new 52-week high of $331.08 on Wednesday — its highest point since Feb. 25, 2021 — before closing at $308.11 on Friday (June 7).

After raising subscription prices in the United States and many other major markets in July 2023, Spotify further hiked rates in the United Kingdom and Australia in May. The additional U.S. price increase, which goes into effect in July, will raise individual rates to $11.99 per month and family plans to $19.99 per month. The higher prices will help Spotify cover the costs of bundling music with limited free streaming of audiobooks. The streamer is giving its customers plenty of options, though. A music-only tier has been introduced in the United Kingdom that costs 10.99 pounds ($13.99) per month, compared to 11.99 pounds ($15.26) per month for the music-and-audiobook option. Two-person Duo plans and student plans also offer discounts to the standard individual plan.

The Billboard Global Music Index rose 0.1% to 1,801.44 as Spotify’s gain helped overshadow losses by 13 of the index’s 20 companies. Other of the index’s largest companies posted modest declines this week: Warner Music Group fell 0.9% to $29.51, Universal Music Group fell 1.2% to 28.23 euros ($30.53) and Live Nation dropped 3.4% to $90.56. The index is 2.5% below its high of 1,847.64, set the week ended May 3, 2024.

Trending on Billboard

iHeartMedia, the index’s greatest gainer for the second consecutive week, rose 35% to $1.25 a week after gaining 6.4%. In just two weeks, iHeartMedia’s year-to-date loss has improved from 67.4% to 53.2% without any major news releases or regulatory filings. At the company’s annual general meeting on Wednesday (June 5), shareholders reelected CEO Bob Pittman and CFO/COO Rich Bressler to the board of directors and approved an advisory vote on the company’s 2023 executive compensation.

SM Entertainment dropped 8.5% to 83,500 won ($60.51) amidst controversy over an alleged sex scandal involving Johnny and Haechan of the group NCT, which SM Entertainment has denied. Such a large drop isn’t uncommon when a K-pop company’s artists are plastered across the South Korean news. In October, K-pop stocks dropped on news that SM Entertainment artist Exo was leaving for a different agency. In April, HYBE shares fell sharply after news broke that Min Hee-jin, CEO of HYBE imprint ADOR, had attempted to take over management of the subsidiary label.

Elsewhere, CTS Eventim rose 4.3% to 82.80 euros ($89.56). On Thursday (June 6), the German concert promoter and ticketing company finalized a $327 million acquisition of Vivendi’s festival and ticketing businesses. Last year, See Tickets sold 44 million tickets and had revenue of 105 million euros ($114 million). The deal does not include See Tickets France.

SiriusXM shares fell 9.5% to $2.56 this week, bringing its year-to-date loss to 53.2%. The satellite radio company, which also owns streaming platform Pandora, is betting on the success of the new streaming app it launched in December and its $9.99-per-month price. The in-car satellite product, which includes streaming access, costs “about $19” per month, CEO Jennifer Witz said at the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference Conference on May 21. The company is attempting to maintain those satellite customers while attracting new streaming customers and reducing its reliance on promotional discounts. “I do think we’ll have opportunities to both capture more demand but also maintain that full price base at those higher price points and implement rate increases over time,” said Witz.

Some U.S. stock indexes reached all-time highs this week. The S&P 500 hit a record 5,375.08 Friday, although it closed at 5,346.99, down 0.1%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite reached a new high of 17,235.73 on Thursday and ended Friday at 17,133.12, up 2.4% from the prior week. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 declined 0.4% to 8,245.37. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index rose 3.3% to 2,722.67. China’s Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.2% to 3,051.28.

Ohio to Designate June 11 as ‘Mojo Nixon Day’ in Honor of Late Rock Artist

The Ohio House of Representatives will designate June 11 as Mojo Nixon Day through a bi-partisan resolution in a general session on Tuesday (June 11), according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame website. In addition, the General Assembly of Representatives will deliver a proclamation to Nixon’s family recognizing the longtime southern Ohio resident for his contributions to the culture.

Nixon passed away Feb. 7 on the SiriusXM Outlaw Country Cruise, one day after he performed on the boat, due to a cardiac event.

“Mojo would’ve loved the idea he was one of few things Democrats and Republicans could agree on,” Nixon’s longtime manager, Scott Ambrose Reilly (a.k.a. “Bullethead”) said in a statement. “He believed in the American Dream, the idea that anyone could reinvent themselves to be their best selves…He believed humor and music were the best tools for celebrating greatness with songs like ‘Elvis Is Everywhere’ and ‘UFOs, Big Rigs & BBQ.’”

Trending on Billboard

On Wednesday (June 12), the day after the resolution, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland will unveil a display featuring Nixon’s favorite stage attire of daisy dukes, red Hawaiian shirt and pink Loudmouth sports jacket, plus his Dean Martin embossed Guild Starfire guitar and original handwritten lyrics to “Elvis Is Everywhere.” The event, scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, is expected to be attended by his family and friends, some members of the Ohio Legislature, former bandmates and assorted indie rock royalty, according to Bullethead, who also will be in attendance.

“Mojo’s first question always was ‘Will it be fun?’” Bullethead said in a statement. “Being embraced by mainstream politics and the mainstream music business, in the state he called home for so many years, feels like he is creating subversive fun way behind enemy lines. Everyone is laying down arms and taking up the spirit of rock ‘n roll. Dead for four months and he is still figuring out how to bring out the best in everyone.”

Bullethead went on to invoke the lyrics of Nixon’s song, “You Can’t Kill Me”: “My soul raves on forever…you can put me in jail; you can kill me; you can execute me. But you can’t kill rock ’n’ roll man.”

Frank Ray, Angie K, Leah Turner, Louie TheSinger & Sammy Arriaga Discuss Country Music’s Latin Roots

As scores of artists performed on outdoor stages throughout Nashville’s Lower Broadway on Friday (June 7), some of country music’s rising Latino country artists gathered for a panel and performance inside Fan Fair X at the CMA Closeup Stage.

“Latin Roots: The ‘Equis’ Factor in Country Music” featured artists Frank Ray, Angie K, Leah Turner, LouieTheSinger and Sammy Arriaga, with the panel moderated by Rolling Stone writer Tomás Mier.

Each artist spoke of their respective backgrounds and journeys into country music, which are varied. Texas native Louie TheSinger, who signed with UMG Nashville earlier this year and released his single “Brothers,” previously performed R&B music prior to making a switch to country, and is open about sharing his story of being incarcerated for two years on a drug charge. Meanwhile, Frank Ray was a police officer in Texas prior to transitioning to performing country music. Angie K noted her El Salvador roots, but also her identity as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Trending on Billboard

Angie K spoke of migrating to Georgia from El Salvador, saying, “Moving here from El Salvador…when you’re in a country where freedom is not as easy as it is here…my dad, his grandfather was kidnapped and as soon as he got out, got cancer and passed away. My dad almost got kidnapped and that’s one of the reasons we ended up moving to the United States,” Angie K recalled. “I remember talking to my dad and he was like, ‘It doesn’t matter because you are healthy and you are ok.’ That’s the Latin community that I want people to know,” she said, drawing applause from the audience.

“We are a beautiful community and I think both Latinos and country people, there’s real trauma in both of those worlds and we are here to do the priority of taking care of each other,” Angie K added.

“I’m a border town boy, raised in Columbus, New Mexico, and in Texas,” Ray said, noting the deep ties between country music culture and Latin culture. “The Latin community and country music…the American cowboy wouldn’t exist without the Mexican vaquero. I just picture, at some point, there was a guitar being passed around a campfire. That’s why the themes are the same—love, family, heartbreak, whiskey. Growing up in a border town, country music [would be heard] as much as mariachi.”

The artists’ music was also front and center during the event. Mexican-American country singer-songwriter Turner, who fully embraced her Latin roots with her 2022 EP Lost in Translation, performed a scorching version of her sultry ballad “T Shirt.” Angie K performed her new song “Red Dirt on Mars” and Arriaga offered up the tear-jerker “The Boat.” Ray, who earned a Billboard Country Airplay top 20 hit with “Country’d Look Good on You,” performed a mashup of his breakthrough song, the bilingual “Streetlights” and his new release, “Uh-huh (Ajá).”

Each spoke of Latino and country singers who inspired them, including Luis Fonsi, the late Tejano singer Selena, Jessi & Joy, Rick Trevino (who earned a Hot Country Songs No. 1 in 1997 with “Running Out of Reasons to Run”) George Strait, Garth Brooks, Carin León and the late country music singer Freddy Fender, known for his No. 1 Hot Country Songs hits “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” and “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”

Arriaga, a Cuban-American who grew up in Miami, first garnered attention in 2011 with his stint on American Idol. In addition to releasing his own original songs, including his recent single “Dominoes,” Arriaga has long helped solidify ties between Latino music and country music with Spanish versions of country hits such as Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” and Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.”

“The Spanish language, everything just sounds more romantic,” Arriaga said. “These [songs] are too beautiful to not be experienced by my culture. I wanted to do it in a way that we weren’t changing too much of what people are used to, so we just flipped the language. We had musicians from Mexico and Miami and we added some flair. It opened up some doors for me to tap into a Latino community. I’ve noticed a lot of Texans are loving the music.”

Angie K told Arriaga, “You were one of the first people I saw…when I was trying to decide whether to release [her bilingual single] ‘Real Talk,’ and you were doing this, so I thought, ‘Why not?’ I feel like you are also one of the pioneers with Spanish and country.”

Of working to increase visibility for artists with Latin roots in country music, Ray said, “It takes a lot of work and I couldn’t be more proud to do this with this group here. We love these opportunities and there are not a lot of them. It also brings us closer together.”

“We should all do a big tour,” Ray also said, drawing agreement from his fellow artists and cheers from the audience.

Motions to Dismiss James Dolan Sex Trafficking Lawsuit Being Weighed by Judge

A California judge presiding over a sex trafficking case that was brought against Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSGE) CEO/executive chairman James Dolan, the Azoff Companies and Harvey Weinstein in January is weighing several motions to throw out the lawsuit, with a decision expected to be announced as soon as early next week.

Attorney Douglas Windor, a high-profile litigator who represented Casandra Ventura (a.k.a. singer Cassie) in her since-settled sex trafficking lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs, filed an explosive lawsuit in January on behalf of Tennessee massage therapist Kellye Croft, who alleged that Dolan and an employee of Azoff Music Management conspired to traffic her to California to have sex with Dolan — who in turn allegedly trafficked her to Weinstein.

Representing Azoff Companies is powerful New York litigator Daniel Petrocelli, partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, who has represented Donald Trump and Travis Scott. Dolan is represented by Danya Perry, a former assistant U.S. attorney and ex-chief of litigation at MacAndrews & Forbes.

Trending on Billboard

Petrocelli and Perry have each filed separate motions to dismiss the case, which is being handled by Judge Percy Anderson, while Perry has issued a blanket denial of Croft’s claims against Dolan.

Croft alleges that she was hired to work with the late Glenn Frey in October 2013 while the vocalist and Eagles frontman was touring with the band and opening act JD and the Straight Shot, which is led by Dolan. Croft alleges that Dolan befriended her during the tour, gained her trust and then sexually assaulted her before coercing her into a sexual relationship while on the road.

Two months after returning home to Nashville in the wake of the tour, Croft alleges she was contacted by an executive at Azoff Music Management and hired to work as Frey’s masseuse for the Eagles’ six-night run of concerts at Kia Forum in Los Angeles. When Croft arrived in Los Angeles, she learned that he was staying at a different hotel than the band — leading her to suspect that she was really hired by Azoff Management as a favor to Dolan.

“Ms. Croft did not perform a single massage on any member of the Eagles while working at The Forum,” Wingdor writes, alleging that “in reality, Ms. Croft was flown out to Los Angeles for the purposes of engaging in unwanted sexual acts with Dolan.”

Croft also claims that she was set up by Dolan, allegedly with the help of two Azoff employees, for an encounter with Weinstein, the disgraced film producer and convicted rapist, during her stay at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. Croft says she was confronted by Weinstein in an elevator and allegedly offered a job on the set of an upcoming film — only to later be sexually propositioned by the film producer, who then followed her to her room and sexually assaulted her, according to the complaint.

Dolan’s relationship with Weinstein dates back to 2003 when Dolan and Weinstein were part of an investment groupwhich also included financier and convicted sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein — that was hoping to purchase New York magazine. Dolan also briefly served on the board of The Weinstein Company starting in 2016.

Croft allegedly decided to file the lawsuit after Dolan sent her the lyrics to “I Should’ve Known,” a song he wrote lamenting his failure to stop Weinstein from victimizing women.

In April, Perry filed a motion to dismiss Croft’s lawsuit, arguing that even if the woman’s claims were true, she still can’t sue Dolan under the Trafficking Victims Protect Act because “the bill targets and criminalizes sex trafficking, not sexual relations (which is all that is alleged in (Croft’s complaint),” according to the motion. Wigdor responded in a separate filing that Perry’s reading of the law was “wrong.”

As to the Weinstein allegation, Perry is arguing that Dolan and other former Weinstein Company board members were already released from any claims “to alleged sexual misconduct by Weinstein” during 2018 bankruptcy proceedings. Wigdor countered that Croft “did not consent to waive her claims” and wasn’t aware of the bankruptcy.

Petrocelli’s motion to dismiss argues that Croft’s complaint “contains no facts suggesting the Azoff Entities participated in, benefitted from, or even knew about any sex trafficking scheme” when hiring her. Petrocelli also wants Croft and her attorney sanctioned for filing the lawsuit and is asking that Croft be required to pay Azoff’s legal costs.

The motions have been taken under advisement by the judge, who late last week canceled a Monday (June 3) hearing for oral arguments on the motions, noting the “Court finds this matter appropriate for decision without oral argument.“ His ruling is expected any day.

The Kid LAROI will break the ice with a performance prior to game 1 on Saturday night (June 8), while the We the Best mogul is set to helm Monday night’s outing in Sunrise, Florida.

Both concerts will be open to the public with no game ticket required for attendees. The shows will kick off at 6 p.m. ET in Lot C2 outside Amerant Bank Arena before the 8 p.m. ET puck drop inside.

Next week will be a busy one for Khaled. In addition to performing at the Stanley Cup, he’s hosting his second annual We The Best Foundation Jordan Golf Classic on June 13, which will feature professional golfers like Bubba Watson and athletes such as Odell Beckham Jr. playing in Miami.

As for The Kid LAROI, he’s currently on the road for his The First Time Tour, which hits Atlanta on Friday (June 7) before the Aussie takes over the Stanley Cup Concert Series on Saturday. The grind doesn’t stop, as he’ll stay in Florida for a pair of shows in Tampa Bay and Miami.

Kelsea Ballerini has reached her 10-year milestone as a country artist, but that hasn’t slowed her down. 2024 is proving that her star only continues rising, including performing for the 2024 CMA Fest, preparing to make her coaching debut on The Voice as the competition show’s fifth judge (alongside a returning Adam Levine) and getting ready to release a new album, which she tells Billboard in a new interview, that it’s “close to done” (“I’m still finishing final touches on vocals, but we have half of it in mixing,” she shares).

It measures at five inches wide, making it easy to place on counters or small spaces without leaving your space feeling cluttered. The machine can also make up to 12 ounces of beverages or as little as six ounces if you prefer a smaller drink.

Below ShopBillboard also chats with Ballerini about what she hopes to teach her teammates on The Voice, her iconic duet with folk-alternative artist Noah Kahan, and her thoughts on more country artists partnering with coffee (and donut!) brands.

First off, congratulations on The Voice! You’ve also celebrated a decade in country music, so what are you hoping to pass on to your teammates? And also, where do you see your music evolving and going next?

I feel like I’m in this really beautiful crossroads of my career where I have a decade of things that I’ve learned and experienced and navigated. But, I still very much feel like I’m in the puberty stage of my career, where I still really have so much that I want to do and so much more music that I want to make, many more stages that I want to play on. Advice that I can give my future team, would just be what I’ve experienced in the last 10 years — and also being really open about the fact that I’m still learning, I’m still growing. There’s still things that I’m wanting to do and I think that’s a really cool space to be in as a coach, to be at that crossroads [where] I [have] experience enough to be able to give advice, but I’m also still experiencing so much and can walk alongside these artists with them.

You recently did a duet with Noah Kahan — what was that like and how did it come about?

I am such a fan of Noah’s and we both got honored at the [Billboard + NMPA Grammy Week Showcase] event before the Grammys, and my goal that night was to meet Noah and we just became buddies. So, when the ACMs were coming up, there was an artistic synergy that made sense between our music. It was really fun to be able to combine the world of Stick Season and Welcome Mat. He’s such an incredible songwriter and musician, but he’s also just a wonderful person. To be able to be buddies now and have that artistic synergy, I definitely think there’s more to come there.

And now you’re with The Original Donut Shop, Jelly Roll just partnered with Dunkin, and Dolly Parton has her collaboration with Krispy Kreme — is there a connection?

Well, everyone loves donuts and coffee. That’s so funny, I didn’t realize that. But I love Jelly, he’s a dear friend so I’m definitely going to start some beef with him about it. No, honestly, it’s been a really perfect synergy of a partnership because I have constantly been trying to find the consistent things in my life, whether I’m home or on the road. Wherever I am, things that can feel the same and so being able to partner with one of my love languages and then also collaborate and do this flavor together, it feels really synergetic and delicious.
