Chart Rewind: In 1999, Jennifer Lopez Claimed Her First Hot 100 No. 1 With ‘If You Had My Love’

It’s May 4, 1999, and Jennifer Lopez releases “If You Had My Love,” the song that marked her embarkation to a fruitful dual-track career.

The Rodney Jerkins-produced single came as a surprise to critics then, as Lopez became one of the relatively few actors to effectively crossover from the screen to a successful recording career. “I embraced all of it to be who I was and offer something really different,” Lopez told Billboard in 2020.

“When I started working in my early 20s, it was size 0 models on the cover of magazines,” Lopez mused. “Tall, blonde, white, sometimes Black. But never Latina. I didn’t shy away from being from the Bronx, I didn’t shy away from my humble beginnings.”

The single, the opening track from Lopez’s 16-track debut studio album, On the 6, her first of eight top 10s on the Billboard 200 chart, was initially intended for Michael Jackson, but the King of Pop passed as he thought it was a better fit for a female artist, and he was right.

With “If You Had My Love” — written by Rodney Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels, Fred Jerkins III and Cory Rooney — Lopez broke the surface of the mainstream as the commercial hit propelled her to a maiden entry on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, It debuted at No. 81 on the May 15, 1999, chart and hit No. 1 on the June 12-dated survey, beginning a five-week command.

The 2020 Billboard Women in Music icon joined Ricky Martin for the longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1 of 1999 to that point, as the Puerto Rican’s fellow Latin pop explosion “Livin’ La Vida Loca” ceded the top spot to “If You Had My Love.”

The song’s 25-year anniversary arrives on the heels of the star’s recently canceled This Is Me… Live Tour, which was scheduled to be her first concert run in five years, in support of her ninth studio album, This Is Me… Now, her first in a decade.

To date, “If You Had My Love” has pulled in 3.8 billion in radio audience, 122.8 million official on-demand U.S. streams and 263,000 downloads sold, according to Luminate.

Lopez, who also boasts three No. 1s among seven top 10s on the Hot Latin Songs chart over 1999-2020, subsequently led the Hot 100 with “I’m Real,” for five weeks in 2001, “Ain’t It Funny” (six, 2002) – both feature Ja Rule – and “All I Have,” featuring LL Cool J (four, 2003). She has notched 10 top 10s, through the No. 3 hit “On the Floor,” featuring Pitbull, in 2011.

The 1975’s Matty Healy Engaged to Model Gabbriette Bechtel

Matty Healy is on his way to being a married man. The 35-year-old 1975 frontman is now engaged to 26-year-old model Gabbriette Bechtel, as revealed by the bride-to-be on Instagram Stories Tuesday night (June 11).

Bechtel broke the news by sharing a photo of her ring — a black gem surrounded by smaller diamonds — taken at Charli XCX’s Brat listening party in Brooklyn, which the couple attended together. “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT,” she captioned the photo, which Healy reposted on his account. (The “Von Dutch” singer got engaged to The 1975’s George Daniel in November.)

The “Somebody Else” singer’s mother, Loose Women host Denise Welch, also confirmed the news on her talk show Wednesday morning (June 12), according to People. “I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged,” she said. “Black diamond [ring], he had it made for her. I couldn’t be more thrilled. We couldn’t be happier — she is everything I would want in a daughter-in-law.”

Trending on Billboard

Healy and Bechtel first sparked dating rumors in September. In April, the latter told Homme Girls that she and the rock star had been trying to meet in person for four years before they finally crossed paths last year. “He came to L.A. and we’ve been in love ever since,” she said at the time, revealing that they enjoy ordering takeout and playing Fortnite in bed together.

News of the couple’s engagement comes almost exactly a year after reports surfaced that Healy and Taylor Swift had broken up after about a month of dating. He was later linked to model Meredith Mickelson, while Bechtel previously dated model Levi Dylan, grandson of Bob Dylan.

Françoise Hardy, Beloved French Singer and Fashion Icon Dies at 80

French pop singer, actress and model Françoise Hardy died on Tuesday (June 11) at 80 after a long battle with cancer. Her son, musician Thomas Dutronc, announced her passing in a touching Instagram post featuring a picture of him as a baby in the arms of his mother with the message “Maman est partie (mom is gone).”

One of the most versatile and beloved French artists of her generation, Hardy went public with her lymphatic cancer diagnosis in 2004 and was briefly put in an induced coma in 2015 when her condition worsened.

Hardy was born in Paris on Jan. 17, 1944 in the midst of an air raid on the Nazi-occupied city and by most accounts had a melancholy childhood whose spell was broken when her absent father gifted her a guitar after her early high school graduation at 16. The singer got her break in 1961 when the Disques Vogue label signed the then-18-year-old and released the single “Tous les garçons et les filles,” which became an instant hit and sold more than 2.5 million copies.

Trending on Billboard

Best known for her melancholy ballads, Hardy became one of the leading lights of the Yé-yé style of music, whose name was a spin on the frequent “yeah, yeah” chants in English language pop songs of the era by the likes of the Beatles. More hits followed, including “Je Suis D’Accord” and “Le Temps de L’Amour” and in 1963 Hardy came in fifth place as the entry from Monaco in that year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

With her stylish, androgynous look and a deadpan, breathy style that landed with young audiences thanks to lyrics about the heartache and angst of adolescence, films came calling and the singer was cast by director Roger Vadim in his 1963 comedy Château en Suède (Nutty, Naughty Chateau), alongside established star Monica Vitti. As a testament to her growing popularity, Hardy began translating her songs into English (as well as German and Italian), scoring her first top 20 UK hit in 1964 with “All Over the World.”

In addition to influencing (and being fawned over by) everyone from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Hardy became a muse for fashion designers Yves Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne as well, with famed photographers Richard Avedon and William Klein shooting her over the years. Dylan was so entranced by her, in fact, that in the liner notes of his 1964 Another Side of Bob Dylan album he included a poem in her honor that began, “For Françoise Hardy, at the Seine’s edge, a giant shadow of Notre Dame seeks t’ grab my foot.”

David Bowie was similarly smitten, once saying that he was “passionately in lover with her. Every male in the world, and a number of females, also were.”

After releasing a series of albums and EPs in France, Hardy’s debut full length release in the U.S. was 1965’s, The ‘Yeh-Yeh’ Girl From Paris!, a repackaging of her 1962 French debut album, Tous les garçons et les filles; her early albums were often released without titles and were frequently known by their most popular tracks. Her first English-language album, 1965’s In English, featured “All Over the World” and a number of other songs she co-wrote with collaborator Julian More, including “This Little Heart,” “The Rose” and “Another Place.” It was followed in 1968 by another English album known as The Second English Album and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. She scored her biggest English-language hit in 1968 with the Serge Gainsbourg-penned “It Hurts to Say Goodbye,” which hit No. 1 in France and the U.K.

Working with a series of collaborators throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Hardy released a dozen albums exploring Brazilian funk, rock, disco, jazz and electronic pop before taking a six-year break before 1988’s Décalages LP, which was followed in 1996 by Le danger, which she said at the time would be her final album. She continued to release albums throughout the early 2000s, though, issuing her 28th and final studio collection, Personne d’autre, in 2018.

Speaking to the Associated Press in 1996, she explained her unusual approach to songwriting, in which she emphasized the importance of melody. “I always put the words on the music. It’s always like that. I don’t write before, and then, I’m looking for music,” she said at the time of the method that gave her songs a unique quality mixing poetry-like lyrics with entrancing melodies. “First, I get the music and (then) I try to put words on it.”

In addition to collaborating with everyone from Iggy Pop to Blur, Hardy also appeared in films by such acclaimed directors Jean-Luc Godard (1966’s Masculine Feminine) and John Frankenheimer (Grand Prix). The singer also developed an interest in astrology, authoring a series of books on the subject as well as publishing fiction and her autobiography, The Despair of Monkeys and Other Trifles, in 2018. She was the only French singer to be named on Rolling Stone‘s 2023 list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time, coming in at No. 162 thanks to what the magazine said was “a breathy, deadpan also that wafted like Gauloises smoke.”

Massive Attack Cancels Georgia Show Over the Country’s ‘Attack on Basic Human Rights’

As the people of Georgia continue to rally against their government’s stringent “foreign agents” law, U.K. trip-hop collective Massive Attack is joining them in protest.

In a message shared to the band’s Instagram Stories on Wednesday morning (June 12), Massive Attack announced that it would be canceling its July 28 show in Georgia over what the group called the government’s “attack on basic human rights.”

“At this moment, performing at the state-owned Black Sea Arena could be seen as an endorsement of their violent crackdown against peaceful protests and civil society,” the message read. “Beatings, arrests, threats, and violence against peaceful protestors, activists, and opponents, along with laws smearing civil society and denying LGBTI rights, go against everything we stand for.”

Over the last few weeks, protests have broken out across Georgia in response to the government’s recently passed “foreign agents” law, which requires media and non-profit organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from outside of the country to register themselves as foreign agents acting in the interest of a foreign power. While President Salome Zourabishvili officially vetoed the bill on May 18, claiming that it contradicted the Georgia’s constitution, the Georgian Dream party overrode the veto shortly after, passing the bill into law.

Opponents of the law point to its similarity to Russia’s own repressive foreign agents law, and argue that its implementation will impact Georgia’s chances at joining the European Union, which the vast majority of citizens support.

In closing its statement, Massive Attack said that the group’s members “stand in solidarity” with the protestors. “[We] feel that it is their voices that need to be heard and their struggle that needs to be under the international spotlight,” the collective wrote. “We’ll return and perform with you in freedom. #ProtecttheProtest”

Ariana Grande Is ‘Reprocessing’ Her Time on Nickelodeon After Hearing ‘Devastating’ ‘Quiet on the Set’ Abuse Allegations

Ariana Grande has broken her silence on her time with Nickelodeon following the claims of sexual harassment and toxic workplace conditions made by former child actors in the documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which streams on Max.

While talking with her “The Boy Is Mine” costar Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari on the trio’s Podcrushed podcast, the pop star reflected on playing Cat Valentine on the network’s Victorious and Sam & Cat when she was just a teenager. “Obviously my relationship to it has been — and is currently — changing,” she said in the Wednesday (June 12) episode. “I’ve been reprocessing a lot of what the experience was like.”

“I think that the environment needs to be made safer if kids are going to be acting, and I think there should be therapists,” continued Grande, who was cast on Victorious when she was just 14 years old. “I think there should be parents allowed to be wherever they wanna be.”

The interview comes about three months after the arrival of the docuseries, which explored multiple claims from former Nickelodeon employees about the network’s sets allegedly being rife with sexism, racism and inappropriate/predatory behavior involving underage stars and crew. The documentary also suggested that head producer Dan Schneider’s shows tended to put young women such as Grande in comedic situations with overt sexual implications. (Schneider filed a defamation lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and the other companies behind the docuseries in May, arguing that Quiet on the Set incorrectly implied that he sexually abused the child performers he worked with.)

“It’s really taken advantage of how much it means to the young performer to get a laugh,” the “Yes, And?” artist told Badgley and his co-hosts. “We were convinced [that] was the cool thing about [Victorious]: We pushed the envelope with our humor, the innuendos. It just all happened so quickly, and now looking back on some of the clips, I’m like, ‘D–n, really?’”

“You think about it, ‘If I had a daughter …,’” she added. “There’s a bottom line. The things that weren’t approved for the network were snuck onto our website. That is another discovery. Going into it, I guess I’m upset.”

Grande also revealed that the Victorious casts’ parents were, for most of her time on the show, only occasionally allowed to be on set with their children. She also pointed out that young people in all industries, not just Hollywood, deal with inappropriate bosses and sexual harassment, and she’s glad that society is starting to push for better conditions.

“The survivors who have come forward, there’s not a word for how devastating that is to hear about,” she concluded. “I think the environment just needs to be made a lot safer all around. Like I said, I’m still, in real-time, reprocessing my relationship to it.”

Merlin Renews Licensing Agreement With Meta

Merlin, the digital licensing partner for the independent music sector, announced that it renewed its licenses with Meta on Wednesday (June 12). That means the music of Merlin members — releases from labels like Domino, Secretly, Ninja Tune, Warp Records and many more — can continue to be discovered on Facebook and Instagram.

“This renewal is about more than simply licensing music – it’s about the strength of building long term relationships, seeking innovative ways to deliver music to fans and those discovering our artists for the first time, and the value of the dynamic nature of independent music,” Jeremy Sirota, CEO of Merlin, said in a statement. “Merlin, on behalf of its members and their artists, is leading the way to build an ethical, sustainable, and indie-centric world.”

“Meta is thrilled to renew our partnership with Merlin, one of the leading champions of independent music,” added Tamara Hrivnak, vice president of music & content business development at Meta. “Our continued collaboration will foster further innovation in music discovery and creative expression. We’re excited for what the future holds.”

Trending on Billboard

Merlin’s global membership accounts for around 15% of the recorded music market, and Merlin negotiates deals not only with Meta but with Apple, Spotify, TikTok, YouTube, and more than 40 other platforms.

“In an industry that has always been in flux, Merlin is the steady hand,” Sirota explained earlier this year. “Merlin doesn’t have investors looking for an exit. There is no parent company with different motives. We are a mission-driven organization that operates like a not-for-profit and is funded entirely by our members.”

As short-form video platforms have become increasingly important for driving music discovery, artists are eager to make their songs available through platforms like Reels. And Reels took on even more importance earlier this year when Universal Music Group’s licensing negotiations with TikTok fell apart.

Historically, no short-form video platform has been able to match TikTok when it comes to causing a previously unknown song to erupt into the public consciousness overnight. When the wider music industry realized it might have to live without TikTok as a marketing tool at some point, many marketers redoubled their efforts to reach an audience through Reels and YouTube Shorts.

NBA legend Jerry West aka Mr. Clutch, has passed away. He was 86.

The Los Angeles Clippers, one of the organizations where West long was an executive, announced his passing on Wednesday morning (June 12). Famously, West was the inspiration for the NBA’s now iconic logo, which is a silhouette from the Hall of Fame guard’s playing days.

On the front office side, West was the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers during its “Showtime” dynasty that included Magic Johnson, James Worthy and other stars. It was West who secured the draft rights for the Lakers to lock in a young high school basketball star named Kobe Bryant.

Sony Music-Owned Label Accused of Disregarding Indie Rights in UK Lawsuit Over Jay Sean Remix

LONDON — A U.K. indie label is suing Sony Music-owned Ministry of Sound Recordings over a remix of a song by R&B artist Jay Sean that became a global viral hit on TikTok a decade after its original release.

According to legal papers filed in the London High Court, which have been viewed by Billboard, 2Point9 Records is suing Ministry of Sound for copyright infringement of Sean’s “Ride It” – a Top 20 single in the United Kingdom in 2008.

Attorneys for London-based 2Point9 say that a 2019 remix of “Ride It” by Kosovo-based producer DJ Regard, whose real name is Dardan Aliu, illegally sampled the master recording of Sean’s original track without clearing its use.

Trending on Billboard

First posted on TikTok, Regard’s “Ride It” quickly became a viral hit before being licensed by Sony-owned imprint Ministry of Sound Recordings and officially released in July 2019.

The track peaked at number two in the U.K. singles chart the same year. In the U.S., Regard’s “Ride It” peaked at number 62 on the Hot 100 (where it spent 10 weeks on the chart) and number three on the Billboard Top 100 Hot Dance/Electronic chart.

The song has since gone on to be streamed more than 1.3 billion times on Spotify, while the video has been viewed more than 285 million times on Regard’s official YouTube channel. 2Point9 says total YouTube views of the remix have crossed 500 million and well over 4 million videos have been created by TikTok users.

The London-based indie, which was founded by Billy Grant and Rob Stuart in 2000, alleges that Ministry of Sound Recordings was notified that the track featured an unauthorized sample of Jay Sean’s 2008 song when it first released it, but “chose not to enter into any meaningful commercial discussions” over clearing the sample.

2Point9’s legal claim is for infringement of the production master recording rights of the original version of “Ride It,” which the label says it owns on a worldwide basis.

The indie label employed producer Alan Sampson in 2007 to work with Jay Sean, real name Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, on a number of songs, including “Ride It.” Sampson is not listed among the claimants and Billboard understands that the producer assigned his share of the master recording rights to 2Point9 under the terms of his 2007 production contract.

Attorneys for 2Point9 say that when Ministry of Sound was first told in 2019 that the DJ Regard version of “Ride It” featured an unauthorized sample, the Sony-owned label rejected their claims and insisted the new song featured a re-recording of Sean’s vocal.

Several months later, Ministry of Sound acknowledged that Regard’s song did feature parts of the original recording and subsequently replaced the infringing sample with a re-recorded version.

The re-recorded “Ride It” was commercially released in late 2019 but was assigned the same ISRC code as the earlier infringing song, say 2Point9. The indie label infers this was done to prevent any distinction being drawn between the two songs when tracking global plays. The original DJ Regard track (featuring the unauthorized sample) still continued to receive regular airplay in the U.K. after the new version was released, claim 2Point9.

“Throughout the entire time we have been pursuing this claim, Ministry of Sound Recordings has treated our label with arrogance and dismissiveness,” said Billy Grant, co-founder of 2Point9 Records, in a statement.

“Why they think that this kind of behaviour against a small label is acceptable is bewildering,” said Grant, noting that prior to Ministry of Sound’s acquisition by Sony Music Entertainment in 2016 it too was an independent label.

Grant vowed to continue his legal fight “until we get justice” and said his company was “determined” to make Ministry of Sound realize “that it is not OK to ride roughshod over the commercial rights of those in the independent sector and that there are consequences for doing so.”

According to legal papers, 2Point9 Records has not yet been able to fully quantify the size of its losses and damages relating to the infringing recording but believes them to be substantial. Sony Music U.K. said it would not be commenting whilst the legal case is ongoing.
